Look Around made my day and helped tremendously. I typically find myself donating goods or clothing but taking someone’s cart for them or even holding a door can change someone’s day or week. Paying it forward can also allow you to look at life or the world through someone else’s eyes. I am very lucky to have the luxury to buy nice things, live in a nice warm house and eat good healthy food. Some do not have those luxuries. No matter what position in life you are, take a moment and really think deeply about being in someone else’s shoes, and take a step in them. Imagine someone without something that you rely on and then picture their life and how they must have to struggle for the simple things you take for granted. Another way to see the marvel of life is experiencing things through a child’s eye. I absolutely love watching my seven month old daughter discover things for the first time, and then for a second time, and so on. Her face tells

a story of wonder and excitement of this new world around her and it’s a blessing to stop the busyness of life and experience it with her. If all else fails and you can’t seem to open up for whatever reason, close your eyes and imagine. After an exceptionally long day I often will find a space, even in the shower and close my eyes and imagine my favorite hike or beach. I will examine the rocks or the sand or the blue sky and try to smell the breeze. I will do anything to take my mind away from the running and racing that it does when I am busy. Whatever it is that helps open your eyes and see the beauty and the pain of the world, it’s important. It’s important to have an appreciate for what you have and a compassion to help others that are less fortunate or may be struggling. I hope that you have a wonderful March! Decorating WHEN YOU’RE Starting OUT OR Starting OVER

HOW TO BEGIN

your first thought was “there are so many options available and so many decisions to make, I am overwhelmed!” you are not alone. My first warning is don’t retreat into the familiar! I see this all the time and it leaves a trail of disappointment and Linen White paint in its wake. The ultimate goal is to create something you love. Keep that in mind as you

If

school and like to scour design books and magazines. Don’t be afraid to rip out or save images of things you do not like as well. After you’ve collected at least a dozen images, sit down and compare them. What do the pictures have in common? Is it the colors? How much furniture is in the room? The style of furniture?

Sketch out a floor plan. If paper and pencil are not your thing and technology is then try the room planner through Jordan’s Furniture in Boston. You can plan any room in your house. If you need to see it in real life grab some masking tape and lay it on the floor and walls.

3.

Pick a color palette. I suggest starting with the items you’re most in love with. It could be a rug, artwork or even an outfit you adore or if you are simply madly in love with the color yellow, start with that. Use neutral colors for investment pieces, like the sofa and dining table, and put the color in paint or accent pieces like pillows, lamps and art. That way you can change the color palette in the future without spending a lot of money.

1.

The easiest way to figure out what appeals to you is by looking at photos of other homes. There are many options with the internet; Houzz, Pinterest, House Beautiful and even Real Estate websites can show you some great images of homes. I am old

6

Paint. Please paint. It’s the cheapest way to personalize a space, and it will give you the most bang for your buck. Even if you prefer white, find a wonderful white that lends atmosphere. If you’re reluctant to paint the whole place, just paint an accent wall. If you’re afraid of committing to a bold hue, choose an in-between color.

5.

Look around and find styles you like.

W W W.

Layout of the furniture? Place a Post -It note on each picture reminding you why you like it or don’t like it later. Create a budget. Figure out how much you can spend. If you can’t afford to decorate your entire home at once, pick the room where you spend most of your time and make that your starting place.

2.

SEAKLIVING

Where to skimp. If you need to cut costs, do it with accessories: Look for mirrors, pillows and lamps at places like Ikea, Target, T.J.Maxx and thrift stores or garage sales. The dirty little secret of decorating is that if you mix in a few cheap things among the more expensive items, no one will notice.

7.

While you are doing that…measure everything and don’t forget to re-check your measurements. Measure your space before you go shopping (as well as the doorways and stairs leading to your domicile), and bring those measurements when you shop. Furniture will look smaller in a showroom with 20-foot ceilings than it will look in your living room. And don’t buy matching sets of furniture, unless you By Regina DiLauro-Fay want your home to look like the sales floor at Furniture Town.

proceed.

temporarily, it’ll end up moving from the living room to the family room to the basement to the college dorm. So don’t skimp.

Invest in the right furniture pieces. A sofa is going to stay with you for a long time, so get a good one. Even if you think you’ll have it just

6.

Consider “temporary” furniture. Lots of experts advise against buying “temporary” furniture. Well, I’m here to tell you that I don’t necessarily subscribe to that theory. It can take a long time to find and afford just the right pieces for your home.

8.

Hire a pro. If you’re still unsure about all of this, you can always seek the services of a professional. If you can’t afford a soup-to-nuts decorating job, then just ask for an hourly consultation. The designer will help you clarify your style, steer you toward the right furnishings and assist in the development of a long-term plan.

9.

Relax & Enjoy. Your first home probably will not be your last home. So don’t feel like you’ll be living with every decision for the rest of your life. Sure, it makes sense financially and environmentally to acquire foundation pieces that will transition from your first home to your second, third and fourth. But that throw pillow is going to be around for only a few years. So have fun.

The Backloop Group I was very fortunate to live on Backloop for a few years. Yes, they tend to have snow the longest, tend to be colder than other areas of town thanks to the giant ice cube just a few miles north, and thanks to the impressive mountain views, tend to get a little less sunlight. Though, I have to say, it was all worth it for me. I enjoy being a little further away from town and people, and enjoyed being so close to the glacier.

and the whole Juneau Icefield as your general backyard, most people never even batted an eye. And why would they? It took simple forethought to forego a lot of ‘problems’ that some people faced. Secure your trash. Don’t leave food out in the backyard and get mad when a bear or the birds come to give it a loving home. These two things could have saved some people a lot of problems.

One thing I never really heard was sirens. For some reason, and it wasn’t because the house was well insulated, we just didn’t get street noise, even though our street branched off the main drag. It was convenient to be close to the main road, without really suffering any of the drawbacks. My yard was situated close to the Dredge Lake area, so in the summer when I wanted to make blueberry muffins or a blueberry pie for my housemate, I just had to put on my shoes, walk out my back door, and across the yard to the berry bushes and walk as far back into the woods as I needed to until I picked 4 cups of berries. Talk about a lazy bakers dream!

But the bears also have an impact on Backloop and glacier area adventuring. From the Mendenhall River entrance to Dredge Lake, you have access to a huge trail system that you can spend hours on if you want. I also allows you to go from one trail system, head towards the glacier, cross the road, and hop onto the Under Thunder trail and head south towards town and go several miles without hitting pavement. From the Under Thunder trail, you can even head up and over Thunder Mountain and drop down into the Fred Meyer area if you wanted to. Well, some people do on accident actually. So, if you hike Thunder, pay attention to the trail signs.

Though, there were times when the forest came out to us too. I found that there was a lot more bear activity on the Backloop than in other areas of the valley. But having the glacier area

But aside from the Dredge area, out Montana Creek road you can hop onto the Montana Creek trail and hike northwest for approximately 13 miles until you come to the beautiful

Windfall Cabin out the road. Hiking that trail was a wonderful experience, and though the trail needed a bit of work in a few sections, I highly recommend the day trip from town to Windfall. We parked a car at each end, and spent a warm summer day hiking from dense trees, to meadows, to follow along the river and end at Montana. I will warn you, we had to cross the river once, so be aware that you may be getting wet and Barkie may be going for a swim. But, if instead of hiking away from town, you want to go towards the Brotherhood Bridge area, there is a wonderfully paved path that goes from Backloop through the woods and empties out in the beautiful meadow at Brotherhood. This trail is awesome for runners who want their not-running buddies to join on bikes or skates, or with strollers and kiddos. But keep in mind, there are several black bears that live back there, and I have occasionally run up on deer on the trail before we saw each other and they bounded off. There is fishing in the river, a horse trail for more rugged off-roading, and of course plenty of squirrels for the chasing. There is also a trail that parallels the main path, and

makes trail running easier for people who don’t want to be too far away from other people should they need assistance. * This is not to replace being safe in the woods and letting someone know where you are and when you expect to be back. And as we welcome March but look forward to summer, we can’t forget the snow sports at the glacier! The Juneau Ski Club is amazing and maintains a wonderful cross country ski track out at the Mendenhall campgrounds. Everyone I have met out there is just wonderful and so respectful. Dogs are little LED balls bouncing through the trees at night, and most people offer a friendly greeting, but some are obviously in the middle of a serious workout. It is nice to see all skill levels together along with their furry friends.

AGING in PLACE I try not to look in the mirror, it’s not a heart and still getting around just fine and pretty sight. I remember in my high school my hair is still mostly brown although soon years, the time when hair product was the the grey will be taking the majority. I am thing, to look good for the girls, I used a not old enough to be a baby boomer but a little gel or a little Aqua Net in my hair. The new term I learned at a three day education Aqua Net wasn’t mine, probably session with NAHB (National Asmy mother’s but I would use sociation of Home Builders) was it once in awhile to slick back the “Silver Tsunami.” my hair and try and impress The Silver Tsunami is the tide of the girls. I remember looking boomers that are starting to hit the closely in the mirror while in retirement and senior years. high school and noticing a grey In the class, (which I earned a hair. What? A grey hair at the age of 15, 16, or 17. At that By Greg Stopher Certified Aging in Place Specialist moment, I realized that I was Stopher Construction (CAPS) designation from the National Association of Home aging. Obviously there were a Builders) I learned that people born in the lot of good years left but I knew that my years immediately after WWII, from 1946 kid years were behind me. I am still a kid at

to 1964 represents 25% of the world’s population and 28% of the population of the United States. Many of my current remodeling clients that were born in this time era were asking about items that would make their homes safer, more accessible, and want to know how they can stay in their homes comfortably. I took the courses to further educate myself in the area of aging in place and help these clients stay in their homes for many years to come. Aging in Place means that people don’t need to move from their homes in order to accommodate their changing needs. Another interesting fact is the rising cost of a retirement home or assisted living facility. These retirement homes and facilities are not cheap to begin with and cost upwards of $90,000 a year, not to mention the fact that in Juneau that means leaving town to live in one of these retirement communities. For that price an aging in place specialist and health care professional can come to your home, determine a plan and keep you comfortably in your home for many more years. After taking the classes, I’d like to believe, I am a planner. I am planning on remodeling my home and now plan to make i t comfortable and safe to live in as I age. I am coming up with a plan for 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, and hopefully retirement years, to stay in my home. Even if I move, my home would be ready for someone who wanted easy access, universal design, and a comfortable home to move into. At this point in my life I am pretty healthy so I don’t have any progressive needs that require home modification so that I can comfortably and safely live in my home. I do work construction, and that can sometimes wear and tear on my body so at some point I may develop arthritis, a bad back, or a disease. In that case I would work with a healthcare professional in my home to develop a plan so that

I could stay in my home comfortably. Also, working construction, or doing anything for that matter, there is always a chance for a traumatic health-related injury which is hard to predict or to make a plan to address. Planning for an aging in place remodel can be done in phases as the homeowner needs the home modifications to maintain a comfortable home. Aging in place is based on a Universal design which is pleasing to the eye and addresses comfort, accessibility, energy efficiency, easy of use, heating systems, safety, home controls, electrical, lighting, maneuverability, doorways, entrance to the home, kitchens, bathrooms, and sleeping areas. Energy conservation for the homeowner is also a factor in designing and remodeling a home for aging in place. According to Center for Universal Design, NC State University publication (Copyright © 1997) Universal Design is based on Seven Principles 1. Equitable Use or useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities. 2. Flexibility in Use or design accommodates a wide range of individual preferences and abilities.

3. Simple and Intuitive use or uses of the design is easy to understand, regardless of user’s experience, knowledge, language skills, or concentration levels. 4. Perceptible Information or design that communicates necessary information effectively to the user regardless of ambient

conditions or sensory abilities. 5. Tolerance for Error or design that minimizes hazards. 6. Low Physical Effort or design can be used efficiently and comfortably with minimal fatigue. 7. Size and Space for Approach and Use. (Design/Build for Aging and Accessibility (CAPSII) National Association of Home Builders 2009) There are some general considerations when determining whether to age in place. Is it economically feasible to remain in your home? My answer to that question is yes! Let us say at $50,000 (more for Juneau) a year for an assisted living home, which is an estimated cost per year by AARP, it is worthwhile to be able to stay in you home. After remodeling your home it will have a higher value and just because it was remodeled to age in place doesn’t mean that it won’t be attractive to a new buyer. The aging in place and universal design is appealing to everyone and is the current trend in design. Universal design will attract millennials as well. Oh yes, a new term, millennials. What is a millennial? Millen-

nials are children born from the 1980’s to 2000, who are looking for that design in a home. Number one because it’s aesthetically pleasing and number two it’s a good home to raise a family in. That is right! After a home has been updated to age in place it is also safer for little children. Tripping hazards have been eliminated, items throughout the home are within reach, lighting is optimal for chores and homework, these are just a few of the benefits of a home that has been remodeled for aging in place homeowners. With the demand for senior housing in Juneau, most homeowners look elsewhere, either out of town or other housing options within the community. While the homeowner or parent wants nothing more than to stay right where they are, home. With a Certified Aging in Place Specialist partnered with a Healthcare Professional a

homeowner has other options available to them, instead of looking outside their own home. I still have a lot of good years left in me, as for as mobility, but as I am getting older and the construction industry wears on my body day in and day out I can see that while I remodel my home I will be remodeling to a home that I can age in place comfortably until I finally do buy the farm.

Greg Stopher has over 16 years of experience in the construction field and earned a degree in Construction Technologies from the University of Alaska – Southeast. His company, Stopher Construction, LLC, is a general contracting company specializing in remodeling, custom finishes, additions and new home construction projects. He can be reached at 907-321-2350.

Let there be light!

For those of us born and raised in the great North, there is probably no sweeter words than that…. LIGHT! March 20, 2016 marks the Northern Hemisphere Spring Equinox. The temperatures are becoming warmer and the natural earth begins to birth and bloom, because a subtle yet significant shift is happening to the position of the planet. Even as it moves farther in distance from the sun, the earth’s axis is gradually tilting the northern hemisphere toward the sun, resulting in longer daylight hours. Only on the Spring and Autumn Equinox does every place on earth spend exactly the same amount of time in both light and darkness – 12 hours each. After the Spring Equinox, the sun in the northern hemisphere continues to stretch into longer days until reaching peak with the longest daylight day on Summer Solstice. I’ll have to write more about the health benefits of sunlight as we move into a warmer season. It is likely you have spent a great deal of time over the fall and winter months reliant on artificial light. The artificial light fixtures and bulbs in your home and work place also impact your health and wellness, though for many, the effects are subtle or rarely

attributed to these light sources.

The push for energy efficiency, while often founded in noble intention, can actually create other issues that might make the new technology actually not the wisest environmental or health choice. Such is the case with the newer energy efficient light bulbs or compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL bulbs). In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency issued an emergency clean up protocol consumers are supposed to follow in case of accidental breakage and for proper disposal once the light bulb is no longer working. It is the toxic gas mercury that is released when broken which poses the most talked about danger. Mercury is most strongly vaporized when the light is on, so if broken while illuminated, the initial exposure is greater than if an unlit bulb breaks. The rest of the mercury coats the lining of the glass tube, and due to variances in brands, etc. it will continue to vaporize, contaminating the air, for anywhere from

about 10 days to as great as 85 days or more. Broken bulbs should be cleaned up and disposed of properly and quickly to limit exposure. It is also notable that as the bulb is used, the mercury oxidizes and oxidized mercury will not volatilize. This means that a new bulb is of greater environmental threat than a bulb reaching the end of its lifespan. Some experts argue that there is no need for real concern; they speculate the exposure is likely minimal in case of breakage and that use of these mercury containing bulbs actually reduces overall mercury exposure and environmental contamination because the decrease in electricity use lowers coal consumption – which is a significant source of environmental contamination from mercury.

ranging from 0.1 to 3.6 mg – despite industry reports of a standard content of 0.5 mg of mercury. Dr. Magda Havas, PhD is an Associate Professor of Environmental & Resource Studies at Trent University. She teaches and does research on the biological effects of environmental contaminants.

Environmental Engineering Science published long awaited research on CFLs in 2011 bu Li,y. and L.Jin. This study measured a variety of mercury concentrations in bulbs,

fatigue, mood disorders such as depression, ringing in the ears, shortness of breath, and even tooth pain, blood sugar spikes and more.

Let there be light! In her literature, she raises several concerns, with the first being that when comparing this to water quality standards which allow only 0.001 mg mercury per liter, a CFL at the 0.5 mg level contains 500 x the concentration of drinking water. That is significant. In addition, she reminds consumers that there is no official oversight on manufacture of CFL bulbs including mercury concentrations. The U.S. allows importation of compact florescent bulbs from countries like China with a proven history of ignoring global environmental concerns and standards as well as health and safety

issues for their factory workers. In addition to the health consequences of mercury exposure, discussion surrounds other factors that may play a role in negative health impacts of CFL use. Because these ill effects are showing up in a limited and sensitive population, often people who experience the adverse effects of CFL exposure are simply not believed. However, when physicians like Neurologist, Dr. Lawrence Newman, MD who is the director of the Headache Institute at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City attribute not only his own migraines but multiple neurological effects of CFL exposure to his patients, people start listening a little more closely. What are some of the proposed side effects? Here is a limited list: headaches, migraines, joint pain, difficulty sleeping,

These bulbs emit a radio wave frequency that is biologically active and some scientist believe their impact could be dangerous. There is growing concern about what is called “dirty electricity” (a phenomena not well understood or widely accepted by all scientists or doctors) as to whether or not it is making people sick. The World Health Organization believes the evidence is suggestive enough that they have issued warnings to limit exposure, as have some European countries. It is also known that CFL bulbs emit UV light and are not required to have a filter to shield UV exposure. This small amount of UV exposure can greatly affect people with skin sensitivities or known diseases (such as Lupus) or possibly medications that make their skin more sensitive to UV exposure. There have been reports of blistering and rashes. There is no research answering the question – can exposure to the UV in CFLs cause skin cancer? Experts suggest limiting both close contact and exposure, especially for children, until those questions can be answered. The once mandated CFL may be going the way of the incandescent bulb and become a topic of history. Lightbulb manufacturing

giant General Electric just announced that they will no longer be manufacturing CFL bulbs. They will only be offering LED. Big box retailer Ikea phased out all CFLs over a year ago. While there are obviously economic reasons behind the switch as well, it makes one wonder if the growing number of reported negative health impacts of CFL exposure are becoming more common. The take home message is that no one really knows what the full effects might be, and experts suggest you limit your CFL exposure, especially if you are experiencing any symptoms that might be related. Be willing to talk to your healthcare provider about concerns related to exposure and prepare to start switching to LED! Dr. Summer Beattie, ND is a graduate of Bastyzr University. She has over 8 years experience as a Naturopathic Doctor specializing in women’s health with an emphasis on environmental medicine. Having served two terms on the board of directors for the Washington Association of Naturopathic Physicians, she has also worked in the medical aesthetics field since 2008. one of the great additions is sumac, the main ingredient in za’tar spice mixture. Sumac is a small deep red berry of the sumac bush that grows in the Middle East, it is usually found ground and is an amazing versatile spice with a tangy tart lemony flavor and was long used in Europe for tartness until the Romans brought lemons to the area. Try and purchase fresh, or whole berries and grind yourself to get the best flavor, and remember it’s taken a long journey to get to us in the Pacific. It also makes an amazing addition to salad dressings over grains and greens or specialty cocktails.

Poppy, sesame and fennel seed mixture to sprinkle or lightly coat the meat before cooking, taking a few pulses in a high speed blender or stone grinder to lightly crush and release aromatics. Combine all ingredients and make burger patty, cook or grill on medium high heat until desired temperature, and serve with a fresh bun of your choosing, lettuce, pickled onions, feta cheese and a spiced mustard or mayo… Drinks nicely with a great IPA or pale ale or glass of pinot noir… From my table to yours Happy Spring
