Letter fr om t he Publisher Last month we got some sad news. Tragically, Juneau lost three community members and dedicated members of the Guardian Flight team when their plane went missing on their way from Anchorage to Kake to pick up a patient. I happen to be friends and soccer buddies with Stacie, the Flight Nurse on board that flight. I want to pay tribute to her as she was very loved not only in her medical field, but by the wealth of friends and connections she made in Juneau during the three short years she lived here. Dear Stacie, I remember the first time we met around 3 years ago. I was getting back into soccer shape after having my first baby and you were at the field house playing soccer in Juneau for the first time. You sat down right next to me, right in my personal bubble. Now that I know you, I know that’s just who you are, personal and personable. The topic of riding in ambulances and babies
Dear Stacie.
came up, and I asked you if you ever delivered babies on the road. With a chuckle you joked “only if they got through the duck tape!”... And that’s how our friendship began. You joked sometimes, well a lot of the time but first and foremost you were very sincere and caring of people and animals.
yourself available to help on the field and off! You encouraged others to play harder, try harder and to not give up. You never wanted a sub, but did if you had to, and were always ready to get back into the game. Always a team player and an awesome soccer sister to play with.
After chatting with you that night and watching you play, I HAD to have you on my ladies team. We would text back and forth more times then I can count about game times and getting flights and the one thing I could tell from the beginning is that more than anything else, you loved to be a nurse, and you loved to FLY. I have text after text of “I’ll be there if I don’t get a flight” and minutes before game time I’d get “was in the parking lot, got a flight, good luck!”
When a couple of our team mates, (me included) came to a game with the tail end of bronchitis you joked (half serious) about wishing you knew we were sick because you would have brought your CPAP and treating us all. I unfortunately witnessed you tear everything that could be torn in your knee during a game, and 15 minutes later you were standing, smiling and taking a team photo with everyone. And through your smile, you were also devastated because you were afraid of how it would affect your job. You are one tough, badass chick.
I know you mostly from soccer, but you played the sport the way I imagine you lived your life. You were always open and ready to for every play, always played your hardest, and always made
For some reason, we were always on the same Freds/Costco shopping schedule and I ran into you there often. In fact,
I saw you at Costco three days before your plane went down. We compared baby bump sizes and discovered our due dates were less than a week apart. You joked about labor and how you’d arrive in OB prepped and ready with an IV already placed... by you of course... You have touched so many lives, saved so many lives, and will live on in our hearts forever. Your impact on this earth will continue to grow. You are so loved and so missed. I’d say rest in peace, but I know you are up there jumping from cloud to cloud, living your best afterlife with your baby girl, one adrenaline rush at a time. Love, Anna - Hug those you love, take the time to chat with them at the store. Take the photo together you think about taking. Schedule those coffee dates. Live one day at a time and cherish that day. Anna Hoke is the graphic designer and owner of Southeast Living Magazine. She can be reached at anna@seakliving.com.

QUASICRYSTALS Two time Nobel Prize laureate Linus Pauling is quoted as having said, “there is no such thing as quasicrystals, only quasi-scientists.” He was referring to Israeli Scientist Daniel Shechtman who in the early 1980’s claimed to have discovered a new form of solid material structure which he called quasicrystals. This discovery did not obey a basic and undisputed foundational principle of solid-state physics held at that time. The field of crystallography said crystals had to follow a repeating pattern of a very specific and restricted number of fold symmetry axes and followed the law of periodicity, or repetition. No exceptions. Quasicrystals form fold symmetry axes not included in that classical theory and are aperiodic – they have regular patterns that follow mathematical rules but they do not repeat, ever. Examples of this patterning was already visible in medieval Islamic mosaics. These mosaics are even more spectacular in that the golden ratio is evident throughout. However, so sure
of themselves were solid-state physicist of the time that Schechtman was viciously ridiculed for many years and dismissed from his research position over his claim. However, nearly 30 years later, Daniel Shecthman was awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this discovery. This sort of story is all too common a theme in education, policies and institutions of knowledge based fields. When supporting one’s argument for a closely held position on a controversial topic in almost anything, but especially the medical field, it has become a common expression to say “because science”. I even catch myself saying it. As if that single statement settles the possibility that any other opinion or position could be valid. We hold up the idea that if something is “accepted” science, it is in fact indisputably settled. This is not
science. Science, by definition, is a largely approved of and working theory.
This discussion may seem irrelevant to how you keep you and your home healthy. I think it’s critical. My field of work requires that I be constantly attending medical conferences, taking classes, researching, listening to and collaborating with other physicians and health experts. What I have found over the last 15 years is that while the principles of my profession hold true, the details of how I practice medicine and what I bring into or take out of my home in order to promote health is always evolving. New information is constantly becoming available. My opinions and positions on different health topics have shifted based on emerging data or information that maybe has been available for a very long time, but I had not seen it. My By Dr. Summer Beattie, ND
attention to topics has shifted w i t h becoming a parent and with taking on roles teaching. Our experiences move us in different directions. Medical school did not give me all the answers. It gave me a foundation and critical thinking skills for finding answers. Some of my best teachers have been my patients. So while I’m always turning to science for answers, I also know that sometimes the best science we have is still simply dogma or incomplete. I’ve been seeing a troubling trend of intolerance to being questioned in the medical profession. Continued on PAGE 8

QUASICRYSTALS
It started years ago with memes and waiting room posters that said things like “Don’t confuse your Google search with my Medical Degree”. I’m guilty of having sometimes wanted a sign like this in my office on more than one occasion. Recently, I saw an article harshly criticizing patients or anyone not a science trained professional for “laysplaining” to them. The article simply degraded anyone who was in the general population and might question medical authority or policy as a reflection of that person’s ignorance and gullibility. The author was adamant that only another physician or scientist was allowed an opinion – never the patient. Pro-tip: Physicians are not God. Many seem to think they are – all knowing, all powerful, and the final authority. This attitude breaks down the very foundation of the patient– doctor relationship: communication. There have been several very pivotal health care times in my own life and that of my family where I have been dismissed, placated, ignored or bullied while seeking healthcare – until the

provider realized I was a doctor and knew better, could demand better, could argue with just as much “science” as they for what I needed. That’s just wrong. Every patient deserves and equal voice. Even drug commercials say “Talk to your Doctor about…[x,y,z drug].” How does a patient have a meaningful visit if they worry their concerns will be dismissed, they will be shamed or treated harshly. For a long time, surveys have been telling us the two complaints patients have most about their doctor is the fear of questioning them and the lack of time available in a visit. In another article, nurse, Becky McKeown said, “In nursing school, they literally tell you never to question a doctor”. The fear is enough that many patients simply do not have open and honest conversations with their doctors. This is no way to ensure quality healthcare. I’ll be the first to admit some patient-doctor relationships are simply not a good fit and the patient is best served by seeing someone else. Still, every patients deserves respect and partnership in medical decision

making. There is hope. Pediatrician Dr. Lambajian-Drummond said that her mentor during residency told her that the two most important things she needed to know were how to pick the sick child out of a crowd and to always be humble and listen to parents. There are many good physicians and health-care providers who value their patient’s questions and input. The truth is, that while you may find a lot of questionable information on a Google search, lay people today also have nearly instant access via the internet to high quality resources once available only to physicians. Today’s patients are often some of the most well-researched and motivated. They are invested in their health. So know that my goal in writing these articles is always to offer the best that I know now. I want to be a resource to empower you to take ownership of your home, your heath, your life. Know that I think everyone absolutely should be questioning and re-searching and confronting the concerns you have.
Some of the topics I’ll cover this year might seem really “out of the box”; but as I’m learning I can’t pretend the information isn’t out there. As my friend and colleague Dr. Christine Schaffner, ND posted on her Instagram page, “There should be no secrets on how to be healthy”. Dr. Summer Beattie,ND was born and grew up in Southeawst Alaska - it will always be home. A 2004 graduate of Bastyr University, she served two terms on the board of directors for the Washington Association of Naturopathic Physicians, and has worked in a variety of primary and specialty care settings. This has given her a broad wealth of experience that she now uses in a unique clinical practice with a focus on rejuvenative physical and aesthetic medicine. Dr. Beattie,ND offers comprehensive care as it relates to physical rehabilitation from a Naturopathic Orthopedic perspective. You can find her and on-line patient programs at www. oneliving.center or email: connect@ oneliving.center or follow me on facebook at: @DrSummerBeattie

“Winter Blues” OR SAD? Editorial By: Meg Frances-Grunow Hartley
Ah,
winter. The glistening white snowflakes, northern lights, hot cocoa, sledding...shoveling, dirty yellow snow, slipping on ice, and the darkness, ohhh the darkness. Come late winter in Southeast Alaska, most of us have a common funk that’s not likely to let up until Folk Fest. Signs include: grumbling under your breath, kicking mounds of snow, taking photos of the sun when it does briefly appear, and daydreaming about days suitable for shoes other than Xtratufs.

But some Alaskans deal with a serious version of these “winter blues.”
How to Recognize Seasonal Affectiveness Disorder (SAD) SAD is a very real type of depression that hits people during specific seasons. There is a rarer summer version of SAD with quite different symptoms, but we’re talking about the kind related to the long, dark winters those in northern latitudes endure. To be diagnosed with SAD, people must meet full criteria for major depression coinciding with
specific seasons for at least two years. Symptoms of major depression include: Feeling hopeless or worthless, having low energy, losing interest in activities you once enjoyed, sleep problems, difficulty concentrating, and having frequent thoughts of death or suicide. Symptoms of the Winter Pattern of SAD include: Hypersomnia, overeating (especially carbohydrates), and social withdrawal. Since winter is hard for many, it can
“Seasonal Affective Disorder tends to get as the season progresses, and depression can be a sneaky insidious beast.” be tempting to ignore symptoms – but it is important to address them. Seasonal Affective Disorder tends to get worse as the season progresses, and depression can be a sneaky insidious beast. What starts out as a mild depression can turn into serious problems; like occasional “hibernation” jokes while canceling plans transforming into full-on social withdrawal and relationship woes. Other serious complications include: Work or school problems, substance abuse, other mental health disorders (such as anxiety or eating disorders), and suicidal thoughts or behavior. It’s Dangerous at the Ends of the World The complications of general depression in Alaska are a big problem, and seasonal depression is no different. While 6% of the US population is estimated to have SAD, it’s been found that 9.2% of Alaskans suffer from it. That’s over 30% more, ouch – living far from the equator, where it gets cold and dark, is definitely a risk factor. Other risk factors include: Being female, a family history of depression, having depression or bipolar disorder yourself, and being younger in age.
What You Can Do About SAD The reasons behind Seasonal Affective Disorder aren’t agreed upon, but biological clues revolve around serotonin, melatonin, and vitamin D production. However, we don’t need a reason behind a
problem in order to try and solve it.
Treatment for SAD includes: Light therapy - Sitting in front of a light box (20 times brighter than ordinary indoor light) for 20-60 minutes every morning has been a mainstay of SAD treatment since the 1980s. A newer form of light therapy is dawn simulators, which slowly light your bedroom during the last portion of sleep. Vitamin D - This vitamin naturally comes from sun exposure, which Alaskans are starved of. Vitamin D deficiency contributes to many cases of SAD. (Toxicity is possible with too much vitamin D, so it’s wise to monitor levels.)
real difference between one of those and a case of SAD; and that Seasonal Affective Disorder can have very real complications. It’s interesting to note that while Alaska’s statistics for diagnosed general depression actually aren’t bad, our suicide rates are the highest in the nation. If you have access to help, please seek it. Here is a listing of Alaska mental health resources. If your need is urgent, please call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255. Meg

Seeing a mental health professional - Traditional therapy has been shown to be very helpful in the treatment of SAD. Medications - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are prescribed to treat SAD. The FDA has also approved the use of bupropion, another type of antidepressant, for its treatment. (As with other medications, there are side effects to SSRIs.) There’s also several other self-care methods to try, like: exercise, sticking to a sleeping schedule, keeping a journal, aromatherapy, and spending time with loved ones when you’re able to...even if it’s not the most appealing of ideas. These last ones are probably worth a try for the plain ol’ winter blues too! But while you’ll be fine sans treatment with a seasonal funk, remember that there’s a

What about Chan’s? Shrimp Pad Thai
Recipe
Contributed by Amber King
Ingredients 8oz Pad Thai Noodles 2 Tbs Fish Sauce 3 Tbs brown sugar ¼ c fresh lime juice 1 serrano chilli, diced or thai chillies ½ c sunflower or coconut oil 3 large shallots, thin sliced 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 lb shrimp deveined, shell off except the tail 2 eggs, beaten
Garnish: Green onions sliced Roasted peanuts Cilantro, bean sprouts Wedge of lime and sriracha for garnish Secrets to good Pad Thai… hot and fast… have all your ingredients ready, and go for it, forceful, fast and fresh! Soak rice noodles in cold water 30 to 50 minutes, or until soft. Drain, and set aside.
We are mourning the loss of a Southeast institution known for the best Thai food, and only in many towns, the beloved Chan’s Thai Kitchen. You would have to make a trip to Juneau, stand outside waiting for a coveted table to sample some great Thai cuisine. While we have had some fusion contenders of recent years, it wasn’t the same to have dinner at Chan’s, my favorites were the Tom Ka Gai soup, Chicken Pad Thai and Yellow Curry... my go to comfort foods. But adding that Alaskan twist of fresh prawns that you can’t get anywhere in the lower 48 (it’s all dirty Tiger Shrimp) on the menu, so this month I thought I would share a great basic pad thai recipe for our local spotlight of Spot Prawns. It’s a great time of year to set your shrimp pots out, they freeze amazingly well in a bit of sea water in a quart bag. Make sure to keep a small stream of water over them when defrosting to avoid turning brown and spoiling. Growing up in the cannery I spent many hours sorting and flicking these sea bugs by grade, shape and size for processing, nothing will destroy a pair of good gloves faster! They are delicious raw and if you get a female ripe in eggs you’ve hit the jackpot!.

Heat butter in a wok or large heavy skillet. Saute prawns until just past translucent, not a minute more (like two minutes max) Remove, and set aside. Heat oil in wok over medium-high heat. Crack eggs into hot oil, and cook until firm. Add softened noodles, and vinegar, fish sauce, sugar and peppers. Adjust seasonings to taste. Mix in prawns, while cooking, do not overcook the prawns, this is critical! Add bean sprouts, and mix for 2 minutes. Reserve a little bean sprouts, fresh cilantro, roasted peanuts and lime wedge for garnish. Plate and serve. From my Auke Bay memories to yours, Amber
