Letter from the Publisher Groups and Sports
Welcome to March! Happy 6th Birthday to us! This month marks our 72nd edition of the magazine and I couldn’t be more proud of what this publication has become. Thank you so much to our loyal supporters, advertisers and readers, we wouldn’t be where we are without you!
March also marks one of my favorite times of year. The days are longer, signs of spring are making an appearance and it’s of course one of my favorite sporting events; the Shamrock Soccer Tournament. It’s no secret that I love soccer, not just for the sport but also for the social and therapeutic aspect of it. I’ve talked about the winter blues before, but I also can find myself in a slump any time of year if I’m secluded in my home for too long or don’t get out and see the bustling community around me. Group sports or activities are beneficial in many ways both mental and physical and I wanted to share what I get out of them with you. They get you out of the house. Just the act of getting ready and stepping out the door can add life back to the dull moments, not to mention it’s a reminder that there is much going on outside your front door. When I

put on my soccer gear, I start to think about the sport, but also the people I am going to see and the information that I will share with them. Then I get in my car and I enjoy turning up the music, and inspecting my surroundings as I make my short drive to the Field House. I find comfort in seeing other people in vehicles driving to or from their destinations and I relish the idea that life is happening around me. Even if you don’t have a designated sport or group activity, stepping out of your comfort zone is usually a good thing. It isn’t always comfortable but I feel like it stimulates new parts of your body and brain and in the end, enhances your life and can lead to new exciting adventures. There are group fitness classes, sports, book groups, parent groups, hiking groups, and educational classes
.COM
around the community, some of which are free! And disclaimer, sometimes certain group activities can be too far out of your comfort zone. I’ve learned from experience that I am not good at group classes that have any type of synchronized actions, like Zumba. Love the idea of it, but after a number of classes, it’s just not for me. And that’s ok too. It took doing something new and different to discover my likes and also my dislikes. Group activities have an obvious social aspect to them. See others, sharing experiences, and communicating face to face always helps me and pulls me out of the enclosed “box” that my life becomes sometimes. I do suffer from a little bit of social anxiety from time to time, but I’ve learned that if you’re honest with yourself
and others; most people are kind, patient and understanding. And with that said, being face to face with someone that doesn’t share those qualities can also be a good experience. I’ve been in situations where group or team members aren’t getting a long or someone has a poor attitude and it’s a good life skill to know how to deal with or diffuse a situation, or if you’re not comfortable, how to excuse yourself from a situation. With the social aspect of group activities, friendships often form and this can lead to other activities and opportunities. I have gained many friendships over the years that started on a sports team, organizational board, or just getting together with a group of friends and their friends. So get out there Southeast Alaska! Find a group, a sport, a class and see how it’s benefits your life! Anna Hoke is the graphic designer and owner of Southeast Living Magazine. Brighter Days Are Almost Here
March 20, 2017 - The official First Day of Spring, and it could not come quickly enough. Having been born in and grown up in Alaska, I have often taken
pride in not b e i n g severely affected by the extended lack of daylight during the fall and winter. However, the older I get, the harder it has become to get through each of these dark, cold seasons with the same level of vitality I used to. This year, I am definitely ready for
some brighter days. Like many people, despite knowing better, I still neglected to do (or consistently do) the things I knew would offset some of the adverse impact of this time of year. I have the medical education and experience to know how best to start correcting the imbalances I allowed to grow this winter. What I’m finding, is many people do not have the tools or know how to re-shape their lives. Listening to friends and patients talk about how once

They did (or attempted to do) whatever currently popular 30 day jump-start or New Year New You program, but that is done and their old patterns are back. So now what? Why were they unable to make lasting changes? Or why did the program fail them if they didn’t get the results they wanted? For many people, the answer is both simple and not so simple.

The simple answer is that they do not possess the foundational education to understand how their mind and body are designed to function in order to then be able to choose success. Statistics show, that when people simply follow a template with no real understanding of how or why the program is supposed to work, they at some point simply stop following it or it stops working for them. Likewise, many weight loss programs especially (despite their popularity) do not reflect current research, are not science based at all, or have not been proven to be both effective and healthy long term. Some may actually lead to more harm over time making harder and harder to achieve the goal. People are constantly contacting me to ask many of the same basic health and wellness questions. To

“Even by Alaska standards, this place has to be seen to be believed.” This beautiful acreage in Southeast Alaska has 3 separate cabins and is accessible by boat and float plane. It is located in Ground Hog Bay in Icy Straits, just a few miles from Swanson Harbor. There are existing moorings in the bay for your boats. The property is bordered on 3 sides by Tongass National Forest and faces approximately 800 feet of waterfront on the fourth side. With no private property adjoining, this site can be subdivided. The cabins face south for the best sun exposure, and each cabin is fully self-contained for spring-summer-fall living or a summer retreat. This location would also be ideal for an Ecotourism business or for a guiding business. Each of the 3 cabins has a woodstove, propane heater, solar panel, generator, running water, septic system, on-demand hot water and full bath with a shower. There is a year-round creek running through the property. The maintenance building has all the tools and equipment you can think of, including ATVs, excavator, 17’ Whaler and an 18’ Lund boat and much more. Four Tips FOR Buying A Home THIS SPRING S
pring has come early to Southeast Alaska. Traditionally, this is the busiest time of year in the real estate industry. It’s not uncommon for rising temperatures and extended daylight to trigger the home-buying bug in folks. Cooperative weather makes moving easier, school schedules are more convenient, and homes are shown in their most tantalizing light this time of year. Spring also brings a surge of homes flooding the market, which means more buying competition and possibly an increase in prices. If you find yourself shopping for a house this spring, there are a few things you can do to improve your chances of success. Get pre-approved by a local lender for a home loan before you shop for a home. Before you do anything else, before you start shopping, do yourself and everyone else a favor and get pre-approved by a local lender for a
that you absolutely must have in a house and in a neighborhood. Focus on the location and on features that meet your basic requirements. Are you close to the school that your kids will be attending? Will you have a long commute? Does your house have enough bedrooms? Try to see past the cracking paint job and look at the potential of a home. Some things you won’t be able to change, but cosmetic issues can be addressed. Focusing on your needs and wants will help you narrow down your home search and expedite the buying process. Knowing how much you are qualified to borrow gives you power in the home buying process. If this is the case, don’t be surprised if they won’t even show you a home. Hire a Realtor
As a buyer, you need to be prepared to move fast this time of year. If you see a home come on the market that you are interested in, don’t be indecisive. Have your agent show you the home as soon as possible, and be ready to make an offer. If you decide to go ahead and make an offer, make it a good one! You are likely not the only one looking at the house, so don’t waste your time be offering too little. You can also consider offering the seller other incentives, such as an extra day to move out. Work closely with your agent to negotiate the right price so that the seller will accept it.

Auspicious Start As January and February have passed with flurries of snow and days that conversely felt like spring, my 100s list is slowly getting more check marks. Not all of them are exciting, some are actually pretty lame and rather mundane, but regardless they are things that I need to get done. So, as we flip another month in 2017, I can happily report that I have made at least some progress on my 100s list. After leaving a little New Year get together, I was surprised to be able to check #70 off my list in literally the first hour of the new year, ‘photograph the northern lights’. It was incredibly special to me to ring in the new year doing what I love most: kissing Ember and Kiska, and taking pictures. It wasn’t a particularly good show, not by any means; but it was January first, and I was out there with my tripod and camera, bundled up, while Kiska ran around with my man. After just two hours we ended up leaving, but the next day from Facebook it didn’t look like we missed much as the solar storm wasn’t very strong. But regardless, I started off 2017 already doing what is important to me. As always, my only January first tradition (aside from struggle snuggles with the pets at midnight) is to apply for my PFD (#44). I am happy to report that this year it was just as easy as always, and to check two other numbers off my list, I supported Trail Mix (#42), and I also supported other charities (#43). I love that we can Pick.Click.Give and choose the charities that speak to us personally. I always choose: people, pets, services, and my passions. I make a point of always supporting Trail Mix, because I hike and run so many trails that they maintain. I support HARK

(Haines Animal Rescue Kennel) because that’s where Kiska came from, also AWARE to support people in our community, and SAIL to support local services. And throughout the year I allocate other money to donate to worthy causes as they come up. Such as our beloved Out Door Studies instructor that got mauled by the bear, and the Special Olympics. The digital age of GoFundMe has made donating to charities so much easier, and there are so many worthy causes out there.
that one off my list. And interestingly enough, it has turned into a book club! The Facebook group #BooksAndBeer was born, and now I am on my way to accomplishing #13, ‘read at least 10 books’.
When talking to my siblings about Christmas presents, my twin said something about wanting a tattoo – the Pulsar Map. I have a good number of tattoos (over 10), so I was happy to give him my input and any bits of advice from my years of body modification. I told him that I would be very happy to gift him his first tattoo, and that brought Number 11 on my list is to ‘start a book up my comment of wanting ‘sibling series’. I have had pretty grand ideas of tattoos’, #28. Now, bless my mother, all the books I will read each year, but but she is not much of a fan of her own I usually only squeak by a reasonable daughter getting tattoos. She *says* number of books for my ‘empty shelf she likes other people’s tattoos, but she challenge’ (empty a book shelf, and fill always has some money comment or it up during the year with books you something else to say about mine. So of finish reading). So this year I am taking course she thought my twin getting a a different approach and steeping back tattoo was just following his ridiculous from the specifics and making more younger sister. Lord bless her when she general goals. This finds out there is a year, I am starting plot for all three of The Dark Tower her children to be series by Stephen tattooed! (Insert evil King. My mom laugh) I guess we has always ranted will have to make about how good sure she is sitting it is, so this year I down when we show am finally checking Photos & Editorial by Courtney Wendel her.

Several on my list are things that take some time to complete, like #5 ‘volunteer 20 hours’, #6 ‘Sunday is a never rush day’, and #38 ‘save 4 months of bills’. These are things that I keep working towards, and though they aren’t as simple as doing them once and checking them off, they have a more lasting sense of accomplishment for me. Yeah actually, not rushing one day of the week is a legit goal of mine. So is working on #7, ‘bed is a phone free zone’. I hope that instead of viewing these things as goals, they are more habits I want to encourage and be more mindful of. And until the last week of December 2017 I won’t really know if I completed them or not. I hope that with these on my list, I can make lasting changes for me as a person, that these are traits more than tasks. Because who wants to be the same person they were last year? Courtney Wendel has lived in Juneau since she was a year old. She has a twin brother and an older brother, and learned to enjoy the outdoors at a young age by following the boys into mischief. Graduating from JDHS in 2006, she attended UAS to receive her Literature of the Environment, BA English degree. When not at work she spends most of her time on the diverse trail system hiking, running, or camping with her spotted pooch and adventure buddies.

5 fun ways to decorate for spring (BPT) - Spring is the perfect time to shake things up with your home decor. As Mother Nature transforms her landscape with fresh buds and blooms, you’re probably longing to refresh your home, too. These five easy craft projects are perfect family activities and the results will add touches of springtime throughout the house.
Rain boot wreath
Do you have a pair of rain boots your kids have grown out of? Use these as an adorable way to display silk flowers in the entryway. Simply select your favorite long-stem flowers from your local craft store (hint: tulips are perfect for spring). Have kids help arrange flowers inside boots and then hang with a large decorative ribbon on your door.
Thumbprint f lower pots
Jazz up boring terracotta pots with
acrylic paint and the tiny fingerprints from your mini helpers. Have kids wear a smock (acrylic paint can stain), then carefully dip fingertips into paint and press onto the pot. For example, red fingerprints can be turned into cute ladybugs with a few black details when dry. You can also use fingerprints to create flowers, butterflies and more.
PEEPS is the quintessential springtime candy, but is also great when used in crafts like this colorful centerpiece. Just follow these easy DIY directions and you’ll create a centerpiece that will be a real conversation starter for kids and adults alike.
Flip-f lop welcome sign
4-inch cube vase 6-inch cube vase Jelly beans 30 Gerbera Daisies or silk flowers of choice 20 PEEPS Bunnies
Favorite warm-weather foot gear can be used to create a cute sign welcoming guests to your home. Buy four pairs of colorful flip flops from any dollar store. Line up and then adhere each side together with hot glue (eight flip-flops total glued together). On the heel of each sandal paint a letter from “Welcome!” When done, let kids adorn with colorful gems, stickers, and other fun spring details.
P EEP S spring centerpiece
Supplies:
Directions:
1. Center one vase inside the other and insert jelly beans (in any colors you like) between the walls of the two cubes. 2. Place PEEPS on top of jelly beans, making sure to save a few for the corners of the vase. Don’t be afraid
to squeeze them into the space. You should have enough to fill in any gaps. 3. Gerberas are usually sold with plastic tubes on the stems for support. Keeping the plastic in place, cut the flowers to desired length and arrange them in the smaller vase. 4. Cutting shorter stems for the outside flowers and longer stems for the inner ones will give you a nice rounded top. And don’t skimp on flowers: If you don’t want to use that many gerberas, find a pair of smaller vases. Pastel painted pine cones Take kids on a nature walk and collect pine cones. Brush off dirt and allow to dry if moist. Then, lay out paper and have kids paint pine cones in festive pastel colors. Mint green, soft pink and sky blue are classic spring hues. Once dry, display in a decorative bowl and hang from strings in front of a window.

GMO March Madness
Recipe
• Broth is typically made with meat and can contain a small amount of bones (think of the bones in a fresh whole chicken). Broth is typically simmered for a short period (45 minutes to 2 hours). It is very light in flavor, thin in texture and rich in protein. Contributed by Amber King
• Stock is typically made with bones and can contain a small amount of meat (think of the meat that adheres to a beef neck bone). Often the bones are roasted before simmering them as this simple technique greatly improves the flavor. Beef stocks, for example, can present a faint acrid flavor if the bones aren’t first roasted. Stock is typically simmered for a moderate amount of time (3 to 4 hours). Stock is a good source of gelatin.
I wanted to share with you all a new book that came out a few weeks ago; GMO Free Child by April Scott, “the Clean Food Advocate.” It’s a parent’s guide to dietary clean-up of genetically modified organisms. I mention this book not only because a friend wrote it, but I’m also in it, and it’s full of very needed information for parenting and life in today’s world. If you don’t think it takes a village to raise children, it absolutely does and the better you get to know your neighbors, communities and get involved in the lives of children, the better off you and they will be. If you even want to consider having children or grandchildren you need to understand what’s changing within our genome, with our soil, our plants, our food, our health and our fertility.
is health and right now our health is in serious peril. I see one major culprit which will not leave my conscience and heart from wanting to share the warning that our processed, pasteurized and heavily pesticide sprayed food supply. A toxic stream of chemicals from seed to fruit, in processing, denaturing, milled and mixed the toxic chemical glyphosate is everywhere. It is the “active” ingredient in Monsanto’s famed Round Up, you probably have some of this carcinogenic chemical in your garage. So please do me a favor and the bees a favor, let those dandelions live this spring. I know they are invasive, and everywhere but the deadly side effects and genomic damage of glyphosate is becoming much more understood than ever before.
From the opening poem by Ghandi
Johnathan Latham spells it out pretty quickly how our regulatory agencies have failed to protect us from toxic chemicals and how certain bans only produce more toxic replacements, or if you’ve had a chance to listen to Stephanie Seneff and Michael Antonio describe how glyphosate is mimicking glycine (one of the basic cell building blocks. It’s very clear to me that we need to start with all our worries, concerns and cares in America should be 100% focused on our food supply, it’s the 1 solution for climate change, by regenerating and returning carbon to our soil via small permaculture based organic farming would be the fastest and most worthy endeavor we could take on. Eating less meat, putting less toxins in our bodies, our children and our dinner tables is key more than ever. This Month of Child Nutrition the
Seven Deadly Sins are: Wealth Without Work Pleasure without conscience Knowledge without character Business without morality Science without humanity Worship without sacrifice Politics without principle This is the key to where we are right now, at a crossroads, or as some have said we’ve crossed that path of humanity, health and science. While I deeply feel that our wants and needs of humanity are very similar we seem to have some very extreme ideas of how to accomplish that goal of human happiness. For me the ultimate wealth

best thing you can do is learn about how toxic glyphosate is in the body, the gut, our soil and what’s happening to our seeds. We need to learn how to avoid it, grow our own, eat organic and constantly detox. Until we change the tides of our genetically modified corporate parasitic organism we will be too ill, to depressed, too anxious to do anything about our state of affairs. As we await the verdict of the Monsanto Tribunal for crimes against humanity, as we listen worldwide to the brave countries who have kicked these corporations and foundations out for misbehaving and corruption, we need all hands-on deck to protect our health, our children, our soil, the bees and our future. Talk to your neighbors, your children, your parents, we all know someone with a chronic illness now, or infertility. Know what you are eating, buying and ordering always! We are running out of time and the consequences of our poor processed system have really started catching up with us. • Bone Broth is typically made with bones and can contain a small amount of meat adhering to the bones. As with stock, bones are typically roasted first to improve the flavor of the bone broth. Bone broths are typically simmered for a very long period (often for 8 hours, and sometimes more than 24 hours), with the purpose being not only to produce gelatin from collagen-rich joints but also to release a small amount of trace minerals from bones. At the end of cooking, the bones should crumble when pressed lightly between your thumb and forefinger. One of my favorite memories of working in the canaries as a kid was watching the elder ladies cutting halibut cheeks or pulling halibut heads for soup and stocks before they were disposed of. They always had the best recipes and in most traditional native cultures there is a whole fish head recipe somewhere. Why are bone broths so healing? Well we head back to the glyphosate, mimicking glycine in the body, which is depleting our natural production of it. Glyphosate is also a chelator pulling minerals out of the body and soil making them unavailable as well as an antibiotic disrupting the delicate balance of flora and fauna in the gut and allowing for proliferation of unwanted and harmful bacteria and essentially killing all the good bacteria. Bone broths are rich in protein, minerals, glycine, Glycine supports the body’s detoxification process, and synthesis of hemoglobin, bile salts, Proline also supports digestion and secretion of gastric acids, vitamin c. Having a rich amount of gelatin, which support good digestion and healthy skin.
Halibut Head Bone Broth 1 halibut head and bones (remove gills and scrub gill cavity, remove cheeks) 1 medium leek washed and diced 1 Bay leaf 1 whole Lemon ⅓ cup fennel chopped ⅔ cup of celery 2 tsp dill ½ cup dry white wine 1” piece of kombu seaweed 2 tsp coconut oil In a heavy large bottomed pot fill halfway full with water and put on high. When boiling submerse (blanch) the halibut head in the hot water for 2 minutes. Remove the head with tongs into a bowl nearby and rinse under cold water, look for any blood or grit to remove and wash thoroughly with clean water. Rinse out the large pot and return to
burner, add the halibut head, celery, fennel, half lemon squeezed, bay leaf and coconut oil on medium heat for three minutes to release the aromatics. Cover with quality filtered or spring water bring to a slow simmer. Add wine and remaining ingredients, make sure to skim off any film or grey sludge that may appear on the top. Simmer on low heat for an additional hour. Strain the stock in a colander into a pitcher, then filter thru a coffee filter or
triple layers of cheesecloth. I put into large mason jars for storage, then make ice cubes of the stock. Frozen it will last for six months and is great to have on hand to add to sauces, dishes and as a drinking broth. My new favorite pantry addition is a gluten free, non-gmo, organic ramen noodles found at Costco, add noodles to halibut bone broth, green onions, smashed ginger and garlic, sliced carrots, baby bok choy and a beaten
egg and in 12 minutes you’ve got a hearty meal to heal your gut and begin the journey to restore balance and health to the body. From my table to yours, Enjoy
