Letter from the Publisher Signs of Spring Hello May! It’s finally that time where we are spending more of our time outdoors. There are a couple signs of spring in our household that I’m sure are common in yours too, so please take a moment to relish with me. Window Cleaning: by the time spring rolls around, our house windows are filthy. Tron, our cat, is usually outside pawing the windows to get our attention to be let inside. Our 3 year old is usually on the other side, face pressed against the glass, wanting to get out. When the sun finally shows up and shines through our windows, boy do we see the dirt. We see the dust, finger and paw prints, forehead and nose marks and it’s a clear sign that it’s time to clean those windows! I grew up using Windex but I’ve heard of vinegar concoctions that do wonders. They are nontoxic and better for the environment, so we will be trying that this year. Driveway clean up: When we finally get
“warm” weather, I try my best to busy myself outside. Sometimes it’s not quite warm enough to wash the car, so instead I get out the broom. I sweep the dirt, dust, pine needles, and gravel that collects on our driveway every winter. This year we got a miniature broom so that our kiddo could expend some energy with us. We make sweeping into something fun with cheering, sound effects and races. Budding branches: If you need some spring inside the house, it’s fun to find some branches and “bud” them indoors. They smell great, and will give your home a spring feel. Simply find your favorite deciduous tree, preferably one that may have taken a tumble during the winter that is still clinging to life so that you’re not stripping the branches of a healthy tree, unless you must. Bring them inside and place the branches in a vase full of water. Sometimes said branches can have bugs so watch out for that. Taking down lights: I’m ashamed to
say that we are usually pretty bad about taking down our Christmas lights in a timely manner. We usually unplug them so they are unseen to someone passing by, but we don’t actually take them down and store them until spring time.

Yard work: I know I’ve talked about this before but I love yard work on a rainless day! Thatching, raking, planting, water, mowing… you name it, it’s an enjoyable spring and summer time activity. Foraging for wild edibles. I have a good friend and former roommate who’d bring home wild fiddleheads, spruce tips, mushrooms, and make a mean stir fry. I am going to try and be adventurous and forage when the timing is appropriate for said plants and fungi and see what I come up with. Whatever your spring traditions or rituals may be, happy spring to you and yours!

A New Frontier in Dentistry By Dr. Summer Beattie, ND At the beginning of the year, I said I’d be writing about controversial topics that directly impact your health and home. I encouraged you to do your own research and take ownership of your medical choices. In this new age of censorship in the name of “science”, it’s harder than ever! I started watching the Netflix documentary Root Cause. I didn’t get to finish it, because in keeping with the times Netflix caved to pressure from the ADA (American Dental Association) and other groups in the field that typically face little to no challenge on what they recommend as standard of care. Actually many dental organizations and professionals questioning the old dogma of “safe and effective” dental science, and it is time to have an open dialogue about this. We never advance healthcare by destroying access to information or letting one group decide what information is accurate. We advance by open debate of the topics. We lay out all the conflicting data and we let people decide for themselves. I am not a dentist. I do however have teeth and am responsible for caring for my children’s teeth; so I’m inviting myself to have an opinion on the state of dentistry in this country and “laysplain” a little about what I’ve learned. After all, I took my daughter to six different dentists in two states, had an on-line consult with one in a
third state who teaches at the Loma Linda School of Dentistry and reached out to another I knew for his opinion…. all in one year – every dentist had very different ideas of what was the best course of action to correct advancing tooth decay – and not one of them could offer a reasonable explanation as to why she was experiencing this. To be honest, the most frustrating visit was at the University of Washington School of Dentistry. While very kind, neither the resident nor the supervising dentist could hold a meaningful conversation about what might actually be causing her tooth decay. Nearly every consult went like this: I shouldn’t have let her drink juice, especially at night – I hadn’t. They said we should have brushed better – we brushed according to the standard recommendations given by the ADA and with the Ultreo (a toothbrush actually invented at UW and claimed by them at the time to far surpass the current industry favorite - Sonicare!). They dismissively said it must be genetics; nothing we could do about that. I happen to know just enough about that topic to know that a genetically inherited trait does not mean nothing can be done. Not to mention, your genes may “load the gun” so to speak, but your environment “pulls the trigger”. What was triggering her? It’s the bacteria in her mouth they said – you can give her antibiotics, but it’s a temporary fix because everyone in the family usually has the same and shares it back and forth constantly – kissing, drinks, etc. I also know enough about wanton use of antibiotics to never treat her that way and destroy her gut-biome. Bio-films in her mouth, I asked…. They had no idea what that was. Lead toxicity or other heavy metals I asked? Couldn’t be; not in this day in age and she didn’t have other gross symptoms of heavy metals. Phytic Acid I asked? They didn’t even know what that was. Mouth
breathing or jaw structure I asked? Maybe but they really did not think so; they thought I should just make sure she ate less candy. She had not had any candy at all until after she was two years old and even then rarely! If her teeth are not mineralizing properly, were her bones? They were confident I did not need to worry about that. What other health issues might be going on that we couldn’t see yet that her tooth decay was a warning sign of? Nothing they said – extreme tooth decay is common these days because kids eat so much sugary food and don’t brush good. Can you imagine me internally screaming in frustration? Common is certainly not normal or optimal. She did not eat a lot of sugary food or neglect brushing! Their solution? Drill, fill, root canals, caps and maybe pull one– all under general anesthesia (which is also something not to be taken lightly). She’d grow out ; her

adult teeth would probably be just fine. This should give you an idea of the extreme amount of frustration I have had with the dental community; I was not being listened to or taken seriously. I want to know why - in order to make choices about how to treat and prevent further issue – seen and unseen. Please don’t think I’m “anti-dentist.” On the contrary – I’m even more convinced than ever that dental health is possibly one of the most important areas of healthcare. It’s our standardized system of dental education and care I find archaic. However, there actually are multiple professional dental associations and practicing dentists world-wide doing it different. Some of them have become close friends and colleagues.

CONTINUED: CONTINUED: We finally found a dentist who was a member of a couple of organizations I had not heard of before – the International Academy of Biological Dentistry & Medicine (IABDM) and The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT). This began our journey to finding the answers and type of care we needed. He spaced out all of her work so that we did not have to do general anesthesia. He used bio-compatible non-toxic fillings and treated her with ozone after pulling her tooth. No root canals and no caps. We are now working with Dr. Rebecca Taylor at Green City Dental in Edmonds, WA. She specializes in neuromuscular dentistry, something else I’ve been learning is critical to not just good tooth health but many other health issues. This is

not the same as orthodontics. The International College of Cranio-Mandibular Orthopedics (ICCMO) is a good resource for learning about this field and finding a dentist trained to provide this type of care.
One of the things I love about attending medical conferences, is that they often bring together seekers from all walks of healthcare. At a conference, I met Dr. Oksana Paly, DDS who has spent her entire career working in veteran and military dental care and is bringing a wealth of personal and professional experience to the conversation around how to take the practice of dentistry in America into a modern and expansive paradigm of healthcare. work and its evolution in the field of dentistry. I’ve since found the work of Dr. Karl Volz, DDS at Swiss Biohealth in Switzerland and Dr. Sam Paulos, DDS at Enlighten Dental in Vancouver, BC, Canada. All of these people are not just practicing but leading a revolution world wide in how dentistry is taught and provided. I have found a renewed trust, hope and even excitement for what is possible in dental care and can not wait to see the field merge into more collaboration with primary care medicine. Most dentists are excellent providers who want to deliver high quality and effective care to their patients, so encourage yours to look at some of the organizations mentioned above. Lets have a more expansive conversation about the reality of oral medicine and how it’s impacting our wellness. Your mouth might hold the key to a lot of other health concerns.

RUBY TUESDAY 2 beets with greens 1 apple 3 stalks celery 2 carrots My kids call me smoother...It’s a joke they don’t like all the healthy things I put in smoothies and low sugar in general. Let’s see what they call me now that I have a powerful juicer. Bargain shopper me. Since I’ve become acquainted with Gearson therapy many years ago and with the recent passing of Charlotte Gearson, I was so lucky to come upon a very good (and retail $$$ juicer) on a second-hand site for a price I could afford. So I bit the bullet and am loving it. Being healthy can be a full-time job, making counter space for all my health gadgets is another thing. But we make due, make new routines and hopefully keep our health close to our moral compass with water and food. Bringing this into everyday living is very important to me. My 13-year-old exclaimed that juicing the fruits and vegetables was a very satisfying job, little one, wanted a little less pulp before being transformed, and definitely less ginger for her.
