Letter from the Publisher Is it really May already? As I sit here with my little one who is snoozing while the spring showers are an actual torrential downpour pounding on my freshly power washed porch, I ponder how our impending summer will be. Will it be a good berry season? Will the bugs be bad? And most importantly, will we get some sunny days? I am really looking forward to this summer as my little one nears a year old. I cannot wait to share with her all the childhood activities I grew up doing in Southeast Alaska. Here are some of my favorites:
The beach: I was lucky enough to grow up a short walk away from Lena Beach and boy did I spend a lot of days there in the summer. We did all sorts of things at the beach from rafting and swimming, to fishing and beach combing. Beach combing was always fun because it went hand in hand with fishing. It was always exciting to find lures that were left behind by a caster fessional inwho the had Statesnagged some seaweed and cut their line.
The Outdoors!
Fishing and boating: Ah yes, my first love. I started fishing and boating at a very young age which developed into one of my favorite past times. We spent a lot of time on the boat and also a lot of time with casting rods at the beaches. Typically during our casting sessions we only caught double uglies, and seaweed, and we certainly lost more lures than fish that we caught on the beach but it was fun all the same. Wild and garden edibles: as an out the road kid who also grew up next to a Master Gardner there was always wild and garden edibles to be picked and/or eaten, or thrown at each other during an occasional
By Anna Hoke
blueberry war. We loved the typical wild edibles such as blueberries, huckleberries, and salmon berries. We also had an enormous raspberry patch full of buzzing bees and delicious fruit! When we got bored with that we had our choice of rhubarb, apples, cherries, peas, chives, and one sunny summer we even had corn! The garden wasn’t always fun and games though, we always had the option to earn a little money weeding which was a nice way to do a chore outdoors. Tree climbing and bushwhacking: not always the safest childhood activity as we all learned in our own way. There is always risk when climbing, and a number of neighborhood kids, including myself have found ourselves covered in mud after a tree
tumble. And of course when exploring in the forest there are sticks that can scratch and devils club that can poke. I spent a number of evenings soaking devils clubbed hands in hot water to be tweezed out later. I was lucky enough to grow up surrounded by acres of undeveloped land. My brother and I, along with the rest of the neighborhood kids, spent countless hours in the woods. We would create imaginary worlds while collecting rocks, moss and anything we thought was unique. We created our own landmarks for ponds or meadows we discovered and our own paths to get there. These are just some of the things I remember doing to pass the time in the great outdoors. It was a wonderful world of no cable, Internet, or smart phones. Our creativity and imaginations ran wild and I attribute those experiences to my creativeness in adulthood. So please, go out and enjoy the outdoors, because before we know it, we will be complaining about winter again. Anna Hoke is the graphic designer and owner of Southeast Living Magazine. Upcycle Furniture With Paint One of the least expensive and creative ways to help furnish a room is by upcycling pieces. You can use what you have or by searching thrift stores, garage sales, consignment shops and Craigslist for tables, chairs, dressers and bed frames. There are several paints on the market designed just for this purpose, and paint specifically formulated to make the job as simple as possible.
is suggested prior to painting for maximum adhesion. Latex paint comes in a variety of sheens, each providing a distinct look — flat (no shine), eggshell, satin, semigloss or high-gloss (very shiny) — so choose accordingly.
If you’re not ready to tackle an entire piece of furniture, start with something small like a picture frame, end table or even a mirror.
with this paint is consistent, with less flaking and chipping than milk paint. Wax can be applied as an alternative to sealer, in clear or antique, depending on the look you want to achieve.
A quick rundown of the various paints available. Sarah Greenman Latex paint: If you’re looking for a smooth, modern and durable finish similar to what might be found on a factory-finished piece, latex paint is a good option. Consider Sherwin-Williams Pro Classic, a paint for furniture and cabinets with characteristics similar to oil paint but without the mess and difficult application. A coat of primer

Chalk paint: Annie Sloan chalk paint is a popular line that requires no primer and little to no sanding before painting, depending on the condition of the surface. The finish you’ll achieve
Milk paint: This paint comes as a powder to be mixed with water, providing a whitewashed or distressed look. Milk paint has been described as stain-like in consistency, though it can be thicker depending on how much water is added. It leaves a chippy or flaking surface, particularly when applied on previously finished pieces. Waxes and water-based sealers can be applied after painting. You can mix

your own with ingredients found at the hardware store, search for the recipe on line. Alaskan Dames sells a milk paint; Fusion Mineral Paint. They have examples of upcycled furniture in their stores and you can even take a class at one of their shops. Mud paint: This option is relatively new among furniture paints and is best for antiquing and distressing, offering a flat, smooth finish with great coverage
and adhesion that typically doesn’t require a primer. Premixed, it tends to be creamier than milk paint, providing opaque coverage. To enhance the final look, use a furniture wax. A final clear-coat sealer isn’t necessary, but if additional protection is desired, choose a water-based polycrylic one. Lacquer or oil-based paint: This is not a DIY-friendly job as it involves long drying times and a strong odor that lingers for days. This option is best when painting expensive kitchen cabinetry or built-ins where a high-end look is desired. Extra Tips to consider before you begin
your project. Tip: Be careful of older furniture that has previously been painted, since the paint may contain lead. To determine if lead is present, rub a swab from a 3M LeadCheck Instant Lead Test over the surface. The swabs are available at home improvement stores. Tip: Make sure the piece of furniture is worth your effort. Look for a solidly built piece that doesn’t sway when
pressure is applied to the top surface. Ideally it should be constructed of solid wood, but if veneers are present, make sure they’re in excellent condition with no splits or warping. Auke Bay Fleet Just as living out North Douglas can be ‘so far away’, so is the Auke Bay area for people who live downtown. But let me tell you, the original people who settled here had it right! Auke Bay gets less rain than downtown does, they tend to have more sun, and generally better weather. We always joke about having to go ‘north of the border’ to see the sun. Though their snow can stick on the ground longer than the valley, for those of us that enjoy the snow it’s not always a bad thing.
bit less restless being stuck on a rock. And the stumbling distance from Squires was also a plus. As with any c o m m u n i t y, the fishing community needs a place to call theirs; a place that they can get rowdy, tell stories, network, and express both their joys and sorrows. For many local fishermen, Squires is the place. But in the summer it also fills with whale watching crews, who also share a love of the ocean. So really, Squires is a ‘we love the sea’ bar. The older fishermen who have earned their own special chairs at the bar while they all watch hunting shows and drink Vitamin R, are the consistent fixture that give Squires the beloved local feel, and it is noticed when they are gone from their post.
While I lived in the Auke Bay area, I was graced with more sunsets that took my breath away than I can count, more beers and s’mores (have you tried using an Oreo instead of graham crackers and chocolate? You’re welcome.) than I care to admit, and so many adventures I probably can’t remember them all. People always joke about being a valley person, downtown person, or Douglas person, and I have to say that I am an Auke Bay kind of girl at heart. Photos & Editorial by Courtney Wendel Having been married to a commercial fisherman, Auke Bay was the spot to live. It is no secret that a fisherman’s first love is the ocean, so being able to watch the boats dock at dusk, and head out at first light was something that made him a

For those of us who would rather get outside to enjoy our comradery, living in Auke Bay gets you most of the way to most of our cabins. Possibly due to the topography of the area as downtown has steeper mountains and there aren’t any cabins on mountain peaks, or the fact that ‘out the road’ has more sprawling and wooded area, you will find almost all of our local cabins past the Auke Bay roundabout. Again,
SEAKLIVING
.COM
only people who have never lived in large cities will complain about having to drive ‘all the way’ out Auke Bay, but the beaches and the cabins are worth the extra 15 minutes. Though there are beaches on Douglas and out Thane, I have found that generally the most popular beaches are out Auke Bay. You get a good mix of jagged rocky beaches where the waves thunder against shore, beaches with round pebbles in a smooth arc of a cove, and the giant alluvial fan that sprawls out to the ocean at such a gentle slope. On even just ‘decent’ nights you usually have at least someone with a fire, people scattered around it for warmth or light socializing and laughing. And during the summer days when the wind isn’t biting and the surf isn’t crashing, paddle boarders and kayakers take to the ocean while families barbecue and dogs keep their children busy with sticks and balls.
And even for people who don’t want to hassle with the beach, tent camping, or cabin camping, just driving out the road can give you the opportunity to see whales from the pull outs, and let you appreciate the beauty of nature even if you don’t want to get too personal with nature. Courtney Wendel has lived in Juneau since she was a year old. She has a twin brother and an older brother, and learned to enjoy the outdoors at a young age by following the boys into mischief. Graduating from JDHS in 2006, she attended UAS to receive her Literature of the Environment, BA English degree. When not at work she spends most of her time on the diverse trail system hiking, running, or camping with her spotted pooch and adventure buddies.

itchens and bathrooms are usually the first items on a homeowners list to remodel. Kitchen updates add value, comfort, efficiency, and productivity to the home. Bathroom remodels also add the same type of value and comfort to the home. New spa like bathrooms are very popular right now. Kitchens that are built for chefs and entertaining are all fantastic but when these house guests are coming over, what is the first thing they see? Have you ever thought about an exterior remodel? What does an exterior remodel add to a home? What items can be easily updated and what are the extra upgrades and their values? Windows and Trim Windows alone usually do not create a different look for a home unless they are re-sized or more windows are added. Adding windows can require a little extra work to the structure, especially when they are added to load bearing walls. Replacing

wood doors and solid wood doors, although more expensive, can really bring the front of the home or entryway to life. The options for exterior doors are endless and can bring any look to your home that is desired. New composite frames and thresholds give the new front doors an added durability. Also remember the addition of trim as mentioned with windows can change the look of an entryway door and tie the windows and doors together. Entryway Approach The approach to the entryway of a home have a similar impact to replacing the front door. If the entryway is covered adding details such as tongue and groove cedar or a painted beadboard to the ceiling can sharpen the look of an existing entryway. Wrapping posts and beams with the same pvc, vinyl, or cedar can drastically upgrade a covered entrance.
What if there is not a covered entrance? Adding a covered entrance is a great way to update a home, especially in rainy Southeast Alaska where it makes a tremendous difference. When adding a cover it’s a great opportunity to add details that tie into the rest of the exterior finish or accent the entryway even further. Adding a c o v e r e d entrance that is timber framed or post and beam can compliment a home’s exterior appeal greatly. Updating and matching lighting fixtures, h o u s e numbers and other exterior details can add to the charm of a home. I have added chandelier fixtures to a couple of covered entries which adds a dramatic effect. Adding an open but covered entryway to the front of a home not only updates and upgrades the home, it also adds some comfort by getting a homeowner and guests out of the rain and snow quicker. In a covered entryway, it’s just as important to fix or update the materials below your feet. Concrete is an old solid standby and adding some color and a stamp pattern to new concrete is a very good way to create a durable, long lasting, and attractive entryway. Tile and decking can also be added on the floor of a covered entryway to enhance the space. Siding, Soffits, Fascia On the market today are more options for siding than ever. Each material brings its own look and mixing materials can make an ordinary house look fantastic or a dreary house look dreamy. When replacing the siding of a home keep in mind a couple of weatherization items that will add efficiency, comfort, and durability to a home. First, when replacing siding, since the old siding will be taken off, see if the air barrier and weatherization barrier needs to be upgraded or added. Next, how about adding some rigid insulation or a spray insulation to the
exterior of your home before applying the new siding. Furthermore, most siding materials and especially for this climate, applying the siding with a rain screen to allow for drying and water drainage from behind. Juneau only gets a couple of days a year that a structure can dry and over the last year I’m not so sure we even had that. Rain screen siding allows moisture to drain from the siding, thus, helping in keeping a structure dry and more durable. Trim at the outside and inside of corners can really finish off a good looking siding job. Also remember the trim around windows and doors and all the options there but don’t forget about the soffit, facia, and gutters. The greatest siding in the world will still look unfinished if the soffits and fascia are not addressed as well. It’s important to remember that exterior details of the home can give the home warmth and character. Windows and doors with the trim that accompanies, the entry into the home, and the siding all tie in together to create a good looking home from the exterior. Addressing these items in an exterior remodel can add comfort, durability, as well as curb appeal. I will follow up next month with even more items for the exterior of the home including accents, columns, decks, roofs, and additions. The company was established in 2015 as a residential-only real estate firm with a licensing agreement to use the name of and operate with input from Juneau real estate broker Carlton Smith, a 25-year veteran of the commercial real estate industry. “I have learned so much from Carlton [Smith],” says owner Robyn Long, “but I have always dreamed of becoming more active in commercial real estate. I am extremely proud to make the leap to building something new.” Platinum Real Estate Group will continue to serve its residential clientele, with the plan to serve commercial clients in the future as well. Long began her career in real estate in 2011 after several years in the Juneau banking industry. In 2014 she was voted as the ‘Best Realtor’ in the Juneau Empire Reader’s Poll. In addition to her Realtor® certification as a Broker, Long is also an Accredited Buyer’s Representative (ABR) and Certified Residential Specialist (CRS), which requires additional hours of continuing education and is held by less than 3% of Realtors ® nationwide. Long says “I chose the name Platinum Real Estate Group because I want people to know we offer something that is rare, and valuable. I’m always pushing myself and the REALTOR®s in my office to learn more, to succeed, so we can provide the best service to our clients.” Long is also very pleased to announce that Vickie Gartley is an owner in the new venture. Gartley is celebrating her 10-year anniversary in real estate, and also hails from a banking background. Vickie and Robyn have worked together in real estate since 2011 and have a forged a strong bond, which has proven to benefit their

clients as they are able to come together as a team. In addition to being an Associate Broker, Gartley is also an Accredited Buyer’s Representative (ABR), a Certified Residential Specialist (CRS), holds a Short Sales Foreclosures Resource Certification (SFR), and the Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES) designations. While the name has changed, the team at Platinum Real Estate Group remains the same group of dedicated, committed, well-known and successful professionals in the local real estate market, collectively bringing numerous years of experience in real estate, including: • Vickie Gartley, Associate Broker, CRS®, ABR®, SFR®, SRES®, REALTOR® • Marsha Smith, REALTOR® • Heidi McDaniel, REALTOR® • Mara Jennings, REALTOR® We are very excited about our new image, the colors of which will provide greater visibility and visual connection than our previous name and logo. A native of Oklahoma, Long has lived in Juneau, Anchorage and Dutch Harbor for over a decade. Her husband, former CBJ Fire Chief Brian Long, is a fire chief on the North Slope. She is a founder and has remained active in the local Capital City Fire Auxiliary, providing support to firefighters and their families and organizing the Pancakes with Santa event each year. She is also active in organizing the local St. Baldrick’s fundraisers, and is an active member of the Juneau Rotary Club. Clients can visit them at PlatinumRealEstateAK.com or call (907) 523-2774. Home Gym In the articles I write for Southeast Living, I often talk a lot about what NOT to have in your home but there is a list of things I either have made a priority to have in my home or are on my grand wish list because they are important to creating a healthier living environment and supportive of healthier lifestyle choices. One of those that recently skyrocketed to the top of the list is a home gym. Some of you may know that my first professional certification was that of a personal trainer and I briefly managed a community fitness center before going back to college to finish my bachelor degree in Exercise Science. I loved being in the gym! I had an all clubs membership to 24 Hour Fitness from 1995 – 2005 despite moving 3 different states over the years, and only gave it up (with extreme distress) when we moved to Bellingham, where there was no affiliated gym. I thrived on the ability to literally be at the gym any time of day or night. I also worked out at my school gyms, participated in other group fitness classes and used a few personal trainers to train me. Despite that, I would never have considered myself an extreme fitness enthusiast and my physical results were only fair. I followed some very basic theories I had been taught about fitness and exercise that have over the years proven to be not very accurate. Despite choosing to attend Naturopathic Medical School – largely because of the focus on diet and exercise as key to health, I found I really still got caught up in a standard attention to labs, and tests, and medications (both prescription and natural) while forgetting to major on some of the foundations of health like nutrition, movement, mind-set and sleep. My understanding of exercise and physical medicine has evolved significantly even in just the last year. I still love being in a gym, but I’m finding that creating space and having a few tools at home are critical to my renewed commitment to intelligent exercise. I’m going to share with you just a couple powerful quotes that I’ve been re-learning to apply myself and a couple of my favorite pieces of exercise equipment to have at home that do not require an entire room, but can be used in a small shared space. Hopefully they will help you have more success at incorporating exercise into your home.

One of the most important pieces of adopting a fitness protocol is your mind-set. Something my friend from medical school and a leader in the fat-loss world, Dr. Jade Teta, ND, says: “Easy is Earned”. Truth. Let that sink in. We look at people who seem to have “it” all together and think, “Not Fair! They make it look so easy when it is soooooo hard!”…. and sometimes (most times) it is hard – very hard. I’ll let you in on a secret -nothing is too difficult if you want it bad enough. Nothing is impossible when you have the right mind-set, knowledge, tools and support. The key to success (IMO) is laying a foundation for success. Health and fitness are far easier to maintain than to achieve. It will get easier. It will become your lifestyle, your character. So every morning commit to making choices that serve your goals. Those choices made consistently become habits that cultivate results. Seek out experts. Recruit friends and family or bring in new like-minded people to your tribe. Then get started. Repeat. You will find this process is like a dance – one step forward, two steps back, then maybe leap ahead only to shuffle back. The important thing is that you keep learning and moving. Which brings me to the second quote by Dr. Teta, ND: “You are building a body, not trying to win a race.” The greatest creations take time and attention and refinement. So will your path to health, wellness, and fitness. Let go of the antiquated reliance on counting calories, numbers on a scale, pounds lost, how long your cardio workout was or if you set a new PR (personal record) with your weight training. Please do not fall victim to the quick fix or latest miracle cure fad. None of that leads to lasting change and often does more damage to your health and long term success. Instead focus on steady results. There is a

long list of quality markers that are of far more value to consider. A few are: How is your vitality improving? Have your labs changed? How is your body shape different? Do you sleep better? This is where someone with extensive training and experience in the fields of Exercise Physiology and Nutrition can be your greatest asset. They will guide you to smart programs based in science and proven to be both effective and lasting. You want programs that are about lifestyle changes, not temporary protocols.
can’t squat because they have a bad back, or bad knees or bad hips – I would argue those joints often hurt and don’t function the way they should or could because we are deconditioned. Squatting (properly) will restore both strength and function while alleviating pain. Find a healthcare professional to help guide you into starting safely. The other thing I highly recommend doing as often as possible is simply walking. A stress reducing, leisurely walk has profound effects on the endocrine and nervous system.
It’s not always possible to get to the gym. So for those days, you need a way to keep moving at home. We currently live in a little condo on the top floor of the building. No yard to utilize and no extra rooms. I keep a yoga mat, a foam roller, a set of kettle bells, and a set of dumb bells all tucked into a dedicated place. They hardly take up any room at all and are easy to take out and use and put right back. Of course I have more on my wish list! The other thing I have is a couple of good short workouts on my laptop that I purchased from Dr. Jade Teta, ND at www.metaboliceffect. com. He is an expert on rest based training and smart training. These are great for when I have limited time and need “someone else” to keep me motivated and moving. Otherwise, I have written out a few series of workouts that I can do right in my little home that predominately combines cardio and weights. No, I don’t have room for heavy weights here – I do use those at my gym. What I do have is a my own body weight. No excuses – you only need yourself to get a great workout! A book to get you started that I recommend is You Are Your Own Gym by Mark Lauren. My current favorite body weight exercises involve squats. They are a primal and essential movement that we have abandoned in our daily lives; it’s just not part of our culture. People think they
The take home message is this: your body is your
h o m e . You are building that body everyday with the choices you make to keep moving with intelligent exercise. You are capable of great physical health and it does take work. You may need a coach or a trainer, or other healthcare provider to guide you – but you can do it. It is the best investment you’ll ever make.

Banana Bread
Recipe
WET INGREDIENTS 7 T organic butter (or Irish grass fed, Amish or Pulegra high fat European style) 2/3 c organic sugar 2T organic brown sugar 2 large organic eggs (room temp) 2-3 ea. organic bananas ¾ t sea salt ¼ t cinnamon 1/8 t nutmeg DRY INGREDIENTS 1 1/3 c flour ½ t baking soda ¼ t baking powder (aluminum-free) Origins of Banana & Bread: Theophrastus (a Greek naturalist philosopher) around the 4th century B.C., in what is probably the first scientific book on botany, describes the banana plant. We know that the Greeks made bread with honey, spices and fruits around the time of Pliny (23-79 A.D.), and we also know that Pliny had knowledge of the banana (he also described them in 77 A.D.) far from its origins in Southeast Asia most likely Malaysia and subsequent spread to the Indian continent, New Guinea, Philippines and across the ocean to the Americas. In the fertile Indus valley, Alexander the Great discovered all manner of bananas and plantainswhich are technically the berry of an herb, and not the fruit of a tree- from the genus Musa. The two are not considered botanically distinct, and their spread has been intertwined. They are different cultivars of the same plant. One has more moisture and natural sugar, the other is waxy and has a higher starch content. The banana was cultivated by about 2,000 B.C. They arrived in southern China by 200 A.D. and Africa by the 6th century. Arab traders had already brought the fruit to the Middle East by the time Muhammad was preaching, and they spread through the growing Islamic empire that his religion inspired. In the 15th century Portuguese explorers found bananas in western Africa and planted some

back home. From there the fruit was taken to the Canary Islands by Spanish Missionary Friar Tomas de Berlanga, and they were soon growing in Haiti, Mexico, and the rest of South America. The rest is history as they say, for the banana was here to stay. Quick breads (chemically leavened) which most banana bread recipes are, were not developed until the end of the 18th century. This took place in America, where pearlash was discovered. Pearlash is a refined form of potash, and it produces carbon dioxide gas in dough. In American Cookery (the first American cook book) Amelia Simmons published recipes using pearlash, and we exported some 8,000 tons to Europe in 1792. (But she has no specific recipe for banana bread) Baking powder was not developed commercially until 1857 (phosphate baking powder). So the banana bread as we know it (a quick bread) could have been first made in America in the 18th century when housewives discovered pearlash as a chemical leavening agent. Bananas were first sold in the U.S. in 1870. By the turn of the century, they had become hugely popular. Instituting bad trade agreements and civil unrest in the South, they were here to stay. Because bananas are sold in bunches and ripen all at once, one can only wonder what Americans did with the fruit they failed to eat out-of-hand

before it spoiled in those days. They couldn’t have frozen them. Modern production of the refrigerator did not begin until after World War II. The U.S. began to import from England in 1846. The first American factory to produce bicarbonate of soda here was located in New York. The new company adopted the arm and hammer logo in honor of Vulcan, the Roman god of forge and fire. Baking powder, which contains baking soda, was also discovered in England. A British chemist, Alfred Bird, created it because he wanted to make a yeast-free bread for his wife who was allergic to eggs and wheat. Chemists around the world began to experiment with phosphoric acid and phosphates for use in food production. In 1855, Rumsford Baking Powder, the first calcium phosphate baking powder, was patented. Two years later, it was available for sale in U.S. markets. Today I prefer my Rumsford Baking Powder to be of the aluminum-free variety, definitely take a look for it in your natural foods section we’ve got more than enough aluminum bio-accumulating in our bodies. The first recipe for banana bread was published by Pillsbury in 1933 at the height of the Great Depression in a cookbook called, “Balanced Recipes” was put together by Mary Ellis Ames, Director of the Pillsbury Cooking Service.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and have a greased prepped pan awaiting. I’m sure your grandmother has a version that is near and dear to your hearts and there really is no wrong way to make it (unless it’s tasteless or dry) Adding enough fat and flavor are essential to avoiding this. Creaming a high fat content full bodied organic butter or quality oil (gone are the days of Crisco bread!!) along with your flavor additions is key, this is the perfect time for you add your salt, vanilla or a nice dash of barrel-aged rum (my personal favorite) then add in your eggs, mashed banana and slowly incorporate your dry ingredients until just mixed, but not lumpy (unless your bananas were not ripe enough and not mashed finely). Pour into prepared pan and bake for about 50 minutes, (19 minutes if you do cupcakes) Don’t forget to dress her up occasionally, banana bread just like your mom or grandmother loves our accessories, whether it’s pearls or walnuts or any other kind of nut, a different mix of flour or my favorite coconut, flax, hemp meal almond flour addition, citrus zest, almond extract and dried fruits, a little frosting, or just a dab of butter, dress your banana bread up once in a while, and bake a loaf for your freezer and for your mom. From my grandmother’s table to yours, Happy Mother’s Day!
