out off the leash but stayed outside with him and then finally we let him out on his own, for the first few weeks I would stay inside glued to the window and wouldn’t take my eyes off him and when he ventured too far, I’d run outside and shake the treat bag so he’d return. I never EVER go to
sleep without making sure he is inside at night, even if that means calling him and shaking the treat bag until he comes home at 3am, yes this has happened a couple times. That being said, we’ve tried hard to establish property boundaries for Tron but he still ventures into the woods and
into other people’s driveways. Now back to winterizing the cat; my husband and I have a number of games we play with Tron and we’ve found it’s funny that pets choose the cheapest non-pet things to keep themselves entertained. Tron’s favorite thing is something we call “mint-ing him.” We take a dinner mint that’s wrapped in crinkly paper and slide it back and forth on the floor between us. Tron loves the sounds of the wrapper and chases it, we will throw in a bounce here and there and he will stop at nothing to tackle and subdue that mint. Then when that becomes monotonous we move to the laser pointer on the carpeted stairs, we race him up and down as many times as he will go, treating him at the end of the session of course. Tron also likes to play tag for very short periods of time and only likes to be the tagger. He occasionally will fetch a crumpled up piece of paper. Also, for being a cat, he sure loves certain forms of water, he hates a bath but loves snow and ice cubes. Anytime anyone puts
ice in his or her cup from the dispenser on the fridge he makes a dash for it. Once given a piece of ice, he chases it all over the house until it’s lost forever under the stove or fridge. When the holidays come around he likes to “help” wrap presents and he especially loves boxes. When we get something new that comes in a box we don’t immediately recycle it but leave it out in the living room for Tron to jump in, explore and spontaneously pop out of. And, if all else fails to keep him entertained there’s always catnip... a little catnip on his cat tree or the floor and he’s occupied and then sleepy for at least a little while. It’s important to keep pets stimulated during the short days and dark months and we enjoy spending quality time entertaining our furry one. What kind of things do you do with your pet to keep them entertained during the winter? Anna Hoke is the graphic designer and owner of Southeast Living Magazine. THE BENEFITS OF BUYING AT THE END OF THE YEAR
T
he end of the year is upon us, marked by shorter days, colder (and wetter) weather, and dropping home sales. For many Alaskans, this is a time to rest and, it would seem, the housing market appears to follow suit. It is common to assume that houses don’t sell in the winter months. However, while it can be more challenging, this is the time of year when the Real Estate market sees the serious buyers. Whether you are buying or selling, here are a few reasons to brave the cold and take the plunge into the housing market:

Brown says he has had a life-long fascination with pocket watches. When he came across a hand-engraved watch some years ago, it struck him as a perfect medium for his skills as an accomplished carver of Northwest Coast art, a subject that he has covered extensively as a museum curator, book writer, and lecturer. He found that acquiring suitable pocket watches, especially those with high quality silver and gold cases, became increasingly difficult until the advent of Ebay about 15 years ago, by which he acquired enough watches to

Lisa Lemay Doyon deserves recognition as among the most enthusiastic new vendors at the Public Market. Born on her logging family’s floating camp, she became as familiar with the beaches of Southeast Alaska as most of us were with the back yards of our families’ homes. Her signature creations are sculptures of dried seaweed and bull kelp, including baskets and rattles, adorned with glass beads, shells, glass fishing floats, and other objects she finds while beachcombing. One of Doyon’s fish prints that she makes using the traditional Japanese Gyotaku method, might be the perfect addition to a kitchen wall in need of adornment. She can be found in the Egan Room at Centennial Hall. A veteran of the Public Market, Dean Snook has presented at all but three annual events since 1998. Vendors such as Brown, Doyon, and Snook have presented at every Alaska-Juneau Public Market since 1983, when it was among the first events at the brand new Juneau Centennial Hall and Convention Center. The 31-year-old building is now undergoing extensive renovations. During Thanksgiving weekend this year, brand new restrooms will be open, but one small section off the lobby, the Davis Room, will be closed. To alleviate parking issues, the “Public Market bus” will be making rounds of downtown every 15 minutes during the busiest hours of the weekend.

they can be displayed in a number of interesting ways. Thanks to the invention of Thigomotrope Satellites (a 3-prong holder that screws into the wall) by Flora Grubb Gardens, a San Francisco-based nursery, air plants can be mounted on the wall to create a stunning, vertical garden. Tillandsia can also be displayed in a variety of vessels including terrariums, vases or hanging glass globes. Air plants require minimal care, making them ideal for homeowners who don’t possess a green thumb! Simply soak plants once a week for 20 minutes in a tub or sink full of room temperature water. Let the plants dry on a towel and then return them to their display.

Succulents are sculptural by nature and with over 600 varieties available, offer a wide array of growing options. They are also readily available and can be found in most grocery store floral departments and home improvement stores. Succulents are easy to care for, requiring water every two weeks or so. Plants should also be fertilized once a month during the summer, from May to September. Unlike Tillandsia, succulents require growing medium and a vessel. However, don’t limit yourself to pots. Any waterproof container will do. Get creative! Many types of succulents are small and can be grown in unlikely objects like china tea cups, egg cellars or sea urchin shells. Some florists are starting to carry the plants in store, but if you can’t find any in your area, they can be ordered online from a number of established growers. This means that they like lots of humidity and bright, filtered light. Staghorn ferns are a member of the air plant family and grow without soil. depth and value, looking at colors and making sure the focal point stood out. For example, for the blueberry picking illustration, I thought the most important thing about the chapter was how ecstatic Mary was to be outside, picking berries with her family. For this reason, I made her the focal point and then placed Clarissa’s collage around her in small pieces to create a sense of movement and excitement throughout the illustration.
HL: Can you explain how you did the illustrations for Mary’s Wild Winter Feast? NK: First the text went to Tlingit artist, Clarissa Rizal, and she created a collage to represent the chapter. Then I worked to incorporate this into an illustration. I started off with thumbnails first, small quick sketches where I would flesh out ideas. I wanted to get feedback so I didn’t go too far in the wrong direction. Then, once the concept got approval, I would start thinking in layers of

collage and not obscure the greater meaning behind it. Working with a really well known fine artist, like Clarissa, was intimidating, and it was nerve-racking to make any changes to her artwork to meld the scenes together, but she was extremely generous with her praise and enthusiastic about every result. She was such a fun person to work with; she really feels a connection to her work and often said the illustrations gave her shivers.
interesting to draw. This was also an illustration that included Mary and her father together, which was great, and it reminded me of being little here in Juneau and going to the beach, and playing in the tide-pools. I started to remember popping seaweed, the smell of the ocean, and as I drew it reminded me of home.
HL: What was your favorite illustration and why? NK: The seaweed gathering illustration was my favorite. I was working from a photo of the location and I was struck by how beautiful it was; it made me want to have that adventure, too. I liked that the landscape had many layers: the rocks, the water, the distant mountains, which made it

snow is gone, white Christmas became a green Christmas, etc. But as I did the illustrations, drawing the scenes the dad uses to convince Mary that this is a good place to live, I started to think too about all the things I love about Juneau: the mountains, the fog, the food. The story made me want to be outside harvesting local foods or at least inside eating them. HL: What does it feel like to see your work in a print, in the store, to see kids holding the book? NK: It’s surreal. I’m pretty sure when I was a kid I told people I would be an artist or illustrator when I grew up. But as I actually grew, it seemed like an unrealistic goal; to see it come true has really been amazing. To also work on a book that is such a heartfelt celebration of Alaska and the place where I grew up, well, that’s twice as amazing. Mary’s Wild Winter Feast can be found locally at Hearthside Books or through online retailers.

FOR PREPARING A
T
hanksgiving is about many things - gratefulness, family, travel, shopping or time off work; but I think the first thing that comes to most people’s mind is food! We all have traditional favorites and many of us might just be adventurous enough to try new dishes or forgo customary plates altogether. Whatever the course, I’d like to encourage you to get a jump start on the commitment to a more healthy you that the New Year is likely to bring and try to incorporate some clean culinary practices into your Thanksgiving feast. All of these suggestions are based on either a commonly accepted or growing belief in the scientific community that a health risk exists or the product creates an undue negative environmental impact. Choose Organic. Avoid just “natural” or pre-packaged products that may have some organic ingredients but are not certified organic. Brands want to convince you to purchase their product, maybe by trying to take advantage of the growing market for healthy options but at the lowest possible cost to produce. Meaning you have to learn to read labels, ignore misleading packaging and discover alternatives to your favorite items because many of these grocery selections likely still contain any number of chemicals and GMO (genetically modified

Another concern is food. I personally avoid water in
plastic bottles as well. It’s truly tragic to see how not only the manufacture but lack of proper disposal of plastic is polluting our oceans and land. There is a great blog and shopping center called “Life Without Plastic” worth reading through. So now you’re asking what can I use! Invest in quality cast iron or enamel coated cookware. Stainless steel or glass are other great choices. Not only can you be sure you food is being prepared, stored and shared in the safest way possible, but you can relax at the Thanksgiving table knowing you are sharing in a meal that is as healthy and environmentally friendly as possible. You are actively choosing consciousness over convenience; that is worth being thankful for.
