Welcome to September! I cannot believe we are at the tail end of summer and beginning of fall. As I try to enjoy the last few days of summer I can’t help but notice the leaves turning and the sky mourning the end of the season. As the weather starts to turn, I start making a mental list of indoor activities to do with the family. Dimond Park Field House: The field house has a lot to offer from various sports,
the indoor track and turf for tots. There seems to always be something going on at the field house and it’s a great place to burn some energy, even if it’s walking the track for a few minutes. Pool: I just found a new love for swimming. I have a friend who swam competitively and also taught swimming and now she’s teaching me! I’ve had a great time learning new drills with her, and of course using the floaty kick board while having a chat when our heads are not underwater. Lucky for us there are two pools in town so no matter where you live they aren’t too far away. Gym: We have a number of gyms and workout facilities in Southeast. I am guilty of not visiting the gym and I have been a member for quite a long

time. My “excuse” is that it was summer and I was doing a lot of outdoor activities but deep down that excuse is mixed with laziness and the fact that I have a little one. Some of our local gyms even offer childcare which is great and takes that excuse out of my book. Library/SLAM: We have two beautiful state of the art educational buildings both in the valley and downtown. They are great places to go check out on a rainy day. Read a book or explore and check out the various sections and exhibits!
Mall Walking: As a parent of a toddler we often “mall walk” while the other parent is eating or shopping. One of our favorite restaurants is Little Hong Kong in the valley. Our little one will eat two bites of wonton soup and is fully fueled and ready to explore. We meander down the hallway, waving to other mall walkers and discover “exciting” things like the gumball machine or the fish tank in Bauer and Associates office.
Who doesn’t love Costco any day of the week but especially on a rainy day. We love to go down every isle, check out what’s new and exciting, have a sample or three, and usually run into friends or family and have a chat. We always find something we “need” to have that we didn’t anticipate buying when we first entered and that is all part of the excitement and experience. And of course when you exhaust all your resources indoors, throw on a coat, hat and some boots and hit the pavement or trails. I cannot express enough how getting outside for even twenty minutes, even if the weather is terrible, changes my mood. It’s easy to be gloom and doom while looking out the window but when you are out in it, it’s easier to gain an appreciation and see the beauty in it. Happy Fall everyone, stay warm! LICE I know. You saw the title of this article and immediately your head started itching… just a little. The unfortunate fact is that many of us have kids in our homes who have spent time away at camps or have been rotating through sleepovers at friend’s homes. This increases the risk that at some point your child will have come in contact with that dread head bug – Pediculus humanus capitis or LICE! Head lice are not known to be carriers of disease and typically not considered a medical concern – simply a nuisance. Many schools have even stopped requiring children found to have lice to remain home. Schools may not even notify parents there has been an outbreak, and most do not offer the infamous head checks most of us probably remember from our school days. So as our families return to school it is important to be ready to both prevent and treat head lice by checking your child’s head and being prepared, should you find an infestation, to do your best to get rid of it! In order
to do that, you have to know a little bit about the bug and it’s life cycle. You also need to know what works, and what does not. Female lice lay about 3-4 eggs a day attached with a strong glue like secretion at the base of a hair, near the scalp, where newly hatched nymphs will have easy access to blood. While lice infestations are most common in young children, adults who live with those children are also at higher risk. Luckily, humans are the only known carrier of this exact species of parasite, so the pets in your home are safe. It’s also reassuring to know that these creatures are not capable of flying or jumping. Surprisingly, many people with lice are symptom free – meaning the most common symptom – itching- may not even occur until weeks or even months after infestation started! This is why head checks are important. Lice are typically spread by head to head contact or sharing things like hats and brushes. Luckily, lice have to have a blood source to live, so once off the body they are estimated to have
as few as 6 hours before they die. Eggs need body heat to hatch. This means that cleaning your environment isn’t as tedious as previously thought. It may be sufficient to simply vacuum your furniture and wash your bedding.

If you want to try a natural route of treatment, here is a recipe I adapted from a fellow Naturopathic Doctor. LICE TX:

Castor oil (2 oz) and Coconut oil (2 oz)
You can make more or less, as long as you have equal parts of castor oil and coconut oil

Essential Olis to Add ( if age appropriate for your child and no known sensitivities – may want to do a test patch before applying to entire scalp) Tea Tree Oil 15-20 drops Eucalyptus 15-20 drops Lavender 15-20 drops Rosemary 15-20 drops Clove 15-20 drops

Work generously into the scalp and hair. Depending on the age of the chlld, try to leave it 30 minutes to 1 hour. Putting a shower cap over it the oiled head will help prevent oil staining of furniture and bedding.

Comb through looking for lice and bits while the oil is still on their head and remove them by wiping onto a paper towel to discard in the trash. Repeat daily until you don’t comb anything out and then repeat in a week to check again….. this is because there’s a 6-10 day incubation period for eggs to hatch and they are easy to miss. If you leave even one male and one female, you’ll have to start all over.

Use your favorite shampoo and baking soda when washing out the oil. It can be a bit difficult to remove all the oil and

you may have to repeat. Use a similar formula for prevention, but without the castor oil. Some coconut oil and a couple of drops of the essential oils should be plenty to deter future outbreaks. While no one ever wants to admit that their child has lice and certainly doesn’t want to have been the person who started the infestation in their circle of friends, I would encourage you to set all shame aside. Contracting lice does not mean you, your child or your home is dirty. Make sure you inform those your child may have come in contact with and help educate them on the prevention and treatment of lice. This is the best way to break the cycle.

Home sweet home? 6 safety tips when moving with kids (BPT) - Moving to a new home can be an exciting undertaking, a fresh start that brings with it the potential for new friends, opportunities and experiences. For parents of young children, though, the process of adapting to a new home can be stressful. While you may have been proactive about averting safety hazards in your old house, a move to a new one calls for renewed awareness of anything that could potentially harm your kids. Unfortunately, the National Safety Council advises that more than a third of child injuries and deaths happen at home, with household injuries the No. 1 reason children younger than 3 visit emergency rooms. Fortunately, conscientious parents can do much to avoid such injuries. Consider these tips for keeping your children safe through the moving process and beyond. Be proactive about precautions. Don’t wait until all your belongings are moved in and you’re adding the finishing touches. Instead, evaluate potential safety hazards before the move even begins, buying important tools and fixtures so you can
make adjustments early rather than retrofitting. Then, once everything is in place, reevaluate results one more time. “The first step to a safe home ... is to look at the world through your baby’s eyes,” writes Laura McHolm in the Huffington Post. “See what looks interesting and what can be reached. And I mean it literally get down on your hands and knees in your new home and check for small things your baby can choke on.” Switch all your blinds to the cordless variety. Kids and cords don’t mix, and the string-like attachments that adjust old-style blinds and other window coverings are strangulation hazards. If the windows of your new home have corded window coverings, replace them
immediately with the cordless varieties available at major U.S. retailers. Look for the Best for Kids(TM) label that certifies window coverings that are best suited for young children, finding more info at Windowcoverings.org. Separate and secure household chemicals. The moving process can be chaotic, and it’s all too easy to lose track of where movers are placing potentially harmful substances such as cleaning products, medicines, vitamins, alcohol, pet food, paint, gasoline and poisonous plants. That’s why you should deliberately pack anything that could hurt your kids into marked boxes that travel with you in your car, separate from the belongings handled by your movers. Upon arrival, keep those boxes apart and
sealed until you’re ready to unpack them into locked cabinets. Secure furniture and TVs against tip-overs. As your furniture and heavy electronics are arranged, install safety latches to ensure they can’t inadvertently fall onto young children. Installation will be faster and easier if you label the latches ahead of time. Update locks inside and out. When shopping for locks and deadbolts for your new home, seek the BHMA Certified Secure Home(TM) label that ensures your new products have been tested in all the areas of most importance to you and your family: security, durability and finish. Install baby gates at staircases. Don’t wait; do this as soon as you arrive on moving day. Children will be curious about their new surroundings, but at the same time unfamiliar with potential hazards. A move to your new home should be a happy time. Make sure you’re keeping it that way by fully protecting your children as you make the transition.

Baked Figs Flambe
Serves 6
1/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons organic sugar
3 1/2 oz scotch whiskey of your choice 1/4 pint organic whole milk or half and half 1/2 pint organic heavy cream
12 fresh organic figs
1/2 cup water 1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon Grand Marnier
6 organic egg yolks zest of one orange
Preheat oven to 300°F.
2 oz local honey
Prick bottom of each fig several times and stand figs in a buttered 9- to 10-inch flameproof gratin dish or ovenproof skillet. Sprinkle figs with 1/3 cup sugar, then add water to dish.
Heat a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Add 3/4 oz of the whiskey and flame to burn off the alcohol. Once the flames have died down, stir in the milk and cream. While this is coming to a boil, whisk the egg yolks and honey together with a standing or handheld mixer until they have doubled in size and become fluffy.
Put the remainder of the milk and cream back onto the heat and, when it is boiling, add the egg mixture, turn down the heat and whisk constantly for approximately 1 minute.
Bake figs in middle of oven, basting twice with pan juices, until tender, about 30 minutes. If pan juices are thin, transfer figs to a shallow serving bowl, then boil juices until syrupy and slightly thickened, 3 to 5 minutes, Transfer dish to stovetop saute pan, (this is the fun part so if you have friends over they’ll want to watch the fun) add 1/4 cup Grand Marnier and bring to a boil over moderately high heat. Remove from heat and carefully ignite pan juices. After flames subside, juices should be syrupy.
Pour into a large bowl to lower the mixture’s temperature and stir in the last 3/4 oz whiskey, add the orange zest. Cover and chill.
Place the warm figs in 6 shallow bowls or on 6 plates, pour the syrup over them and add a scoop of ice-cream.
Take the milk and cream off the heat and pour half onto the egg yolks. Whisk until combined, then put to one side. Contributed by Amber King
Ficus carica L., commonly known as the fig, originated in northern Asia Minor and spread with the Greeks and the Romans throughout the Mediterranean region. Spanish Franciscan missionaries brought the fig to southern California in 1520, and is why you find mission figs to be the most common in the US. This Mediterranean treat is high in potassium, iron, fiber and plant calcium, figs are also used for medicinal purposes as a diuretic and laxative. They are one of the oldest cultivated crops on planet earth prized and revered fruits, from Pliny the elder praising its restorative powers to many religious references, the fig stood for fertility peace & prosperity. As many of you know I am a passionate food activist and we recently had a huge win in California courts with a jury awarding a local groundskeeper a record 289 million dollar judgment against Monsanto for punitive damages that they have withheld the safety and risks associated with the chemical glyphosate. In honor of this historic win, and my belief in the future of food I wanted to celebrate with a flambe fig dessert, for its significance and a little scotch whiskey ice cream for Hugh Grant (no not that Hugh Grant) the former CEO of Monsanto, whom Moms Across America begged to change directions at their shareholder meetings over the past few years. He’s from Scotland so while he’s enjoying his millions of profits from selling to Bayer, we will be celebrating with real food, organic food and watching and waiting for the end of the chemical era of food and forest production on the planet.
