ISSUE 163 – 5th December 2014 Yahoo Benefiting from Mozilla Deal A few weeks ago, Search Lately reported on Mozilla’s decision to switch their default search engine to Yahoo. This is now available in the US for users of the new Firefox 34. As it is early days for this latest version of Firefox, the impact has initially been low in terms of volumes but from the base of Firefox users, StatCounter has reported that Yahoo is used three times more on Firefox 34 as opposed to Firefox 33.

In the context of Firefox usage, in the US, Firefox has 15% penetration but this is over 16% globally and as high as 25% in France and 41% in Germany. This means that Yahoo could gain significant market share in high Firefox penetration markets.

Google developing child-friendly products Google announced this week that it is developing versions of its products aimed at kids. While the search giant did not release any specifics, a USA Today interview claims search, Chrome and YouTube are likely candidates, and will receive revamps designed for the under 12s.

Pavni Diwanji, VP of engineering at Google, told USA today "The big motivator inside the company is everyone is having kids, so there's a push to change our products to be fun and safe for children."

The emphasis will be on online safety and could see different search results generated depending on the age of the user. The example Diwanji gave suggests that if a child searches for 'Trains', they would get information on Thomas the Tank Engine, rather than ticket booking sites and timetables.

US Mobile Search Spend Expected to Overtake Desktop in 2015 According to a report from the digital research firm eMarketer, US mobile search spend is expected to overtake desktop next year. Only last year, the firm estimated that less than 25% of search spend went to mobile and in the most recent report it claims that mobile will account for 76.7%.

The report includes both tablets and smartphones, however it is suggested that the dramatic increase will be caused mainly by smartphones.
