Shop Local

Think Local

... In Downtown Sidney

Part of what makes our neighbourhoods special are the businesses that thrive within them. As Saanich Peninsula entrepreneurs we strive to meet the needs of, and give back to, our diverse community. We ask that you please take a minute to think about the large potential of your consumer dollar.

When you shop local, more revenue remains in your community, supporting parks, schools and more! For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $46 is recirculated back into the local economy.

day throughout downtown Sidney. Sidney will have activities on all three days of the Family Day weekend and each day Sidney restaurants and businesses will be open to welcome families. The theme this year is ‘marine’ and back once again is Robin Sather, Canada’s only LEGO professional who will build a 6 foot Seaspan tugboat. Sidney’s own Star Cinema will be showing the LEGO Movie and the Victoria Film Festival is holding Jammies & Toons at 3 p.m. on February 9th at the Charlie White Theatre in the Mary Winspear Centre. On Saturday February 7th, the fun starts at 10.00 a.m. when the Sidney Museum opens its doors to hand out the LEGO Brick Festival scavenger hunt maps. The Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre will feature underwater LEGO bricks and the Sidney Pier Hotel will host a huge interactive LEGO brick display by VicLUG. The fun continues Sunday February 8th in the same locations with

all the same fun activities as well as the exciting start of a Seaspan tugboat LEGO build by Robin Sather. Robin will start constructing his masterpiece in the building on the waterfront at 9891 Seaport Place (AKA the Gracepoint Police Station). On Monday February 9th all the fun activities go on and Robin continues construction of his work of art at the Mary Winspear Centre. Visitors will also help Robin build a large LEGO mosaic, which will match the design of the tugboat. The Mary Winspear Centre will also have LEGO play areas for all ages, and a community open house where families can learn about the activities available to family and youth in the Sidney area. Explore Sidney in search of exciting LEGO displays, and enter your completed treasure map at the Sidney Museum for your chance to win a wonderful prize. Watch for draw boxes and door prize opportunities for fabulous LEGO prizes all weekend.

Sidney Literary Festival 2015 Red Brick Readings

Thanks to the 2015 Sidney and

by Derek Peach

Peninsula Literary Festival Committee, you can buy tickets to attend a series of four readings by selected local authors you also enjoyed in 2013. The first event on the New Year’s literary calendar will be Patrick Lane and Lorna Crozier at the Red Brick Café on February 13th beginning at 7 p.m. Patrick Lane was inducted as an Officer of the Order of Canada in November 2014 just weeks after the launch of his last collection of poems, Washita. Typed over a long period with one finger of his left hand, Lane was yet able to say, “It is rare to feel anything deeply. My life is a feast if I allow it to be.” This is the man of whom Jane Urquart said, “Patrick Lane is our most essential poet: tough, tender, fearless, and beautifully dangerous.” Lorna Crozier is a Governor General’s Award-winning poet and author with numerous books of poetry and anthologies of non-fiction to her credit. She continues to write and teach and give benefit readings as an expression of what she might have commented on in It Is Night: “Outside my mind, the wind is reckoning./Always there is something/to figure out.” To attend an evening with these two jewels in our crown of local authors, you can go to Tanner’s Book Store on Beacon Avenue,

Sidney or Munro’s Books in Victoria where you may have bought that volume of their work for your friend. Tickets will be $10 and they will go fast, as the rapid sell-out in 2013 attests. The year 2015 will be a wonderful feast of literary events hosted by the Sidney and Peninsula Literary Festival Committee and sponsored by Seaside Magazine, culminating in the festival October 2 - 4th. There are several opportunities to live your resolution to participate more fully in that part of your community. On behalf of the festival, the Star Cinema will show “Far From the Madding Crowd” based on Thomas Hardy’s celebrated novel. The showing will take place July 29th, 2015. Look for posters and reminders to attend this beautifully filmed classic. During the first weekend in October at least 15 to 18 authors will participate in two Gala events, readings and workshops, youth activities, and a Sunday Brunch. Look for our youth and adult writing competitions scheduled for the early fall. More details will be provided over the next few months on all these events. If you would like to contribute financially to the festival by sponsoring an author or join in organizing the festival, please get in touch with Gillian Crowley, grant writer and promotions coordinator at gillian1916@gmail.com.

Sidney Casuals: A Peninsula Legacy by Doreen Marion Gee

IslandBlue’s Sidney Art Store

There is a reason why

Sidney Casuals has been a local fixture for over three decades. It comes down to the basics. The clothing store practices good core business values - great product, excellent service and integrity. Sidney Casuals is a template for retail success, an example for new entrepreneurs.

Wayne Whitlock founded the business 32 years ago, calling it “Sidney Men’s

to their present location at 2513 Beacon Avenue as Sidney Casuals with an

expanded selection of women’s wear. The present owner, Sue Taylor, enjoyed her part in the business legacy with her late husband, Wayne. It is one of the largest

clothing stores in Sidney with over 5,000 square feet of retail space on two levels.

K

Sidney Casuals has a wide selection of both male and female apparel for adults. Sue describes her product as “quality casual clothing”; they carry reputable, premium quality brands. Her clothes for both sexes are ‘wearable’ and classy. To serve Sidney globetrotters, Sidney Casuals sells lightweight durable clothing perfect for the smart traveller who wants less to pack and ‘wash ‘n wear’ convenience. Certain core wardrobe basics never go out of style; Sue is proud that her store offers those classic elegant slacks and sweaters that women always love to wear. Many men still enjoy showing off their attractive cardigans, always fashionable and distinctly sexy. Sue Taylor and her staff put a high priority on kind, respectful customer service. If they are out of a product or a size, they make a special order for a customer. The art of spending time with people is alive and well: Sue considers it an honour to help a senior find the perfect outfit. Staff treat customers with honesty. If Sue makes a promise to a patron, she keeps it. The affable owner is very excited about their new Spring line being featured at the end of January and into March. The new fashions for Spring will dazzle the eye with fresh bright colours and beautiful fabrics. Plus there will be ongoing sales for their Winter stock. A long-standing retail legacy in downtown, Sidney Casuals continues to radiate the overall experience of our small seaside town: a class act served up with a smile and a lot of heart. This is part of a rotating series of articles on members of Sidney Meet Up Women’s Networking Group, featuring women in business on the Saanich Peninsula. Stepping into the Peninsula U-Brew Winery is like entering a gleaming, glistening fairy land. Glass bottles are arrayed in rows and racks, filled with happy golden and ruby red liquid. Staff and customers smile and chat while filling, corking and labelling bottles. It’s an impressive operation, and at the centre of this web of activity is Maureen Bifford, a slim, fit lady with dark hair and a ready smile. “My hubby, Stan Roberts, and I were customers here for 15 years and we liked the wine so much that seven years ago we decided to buy the place,” she told me. “We’ve worked hard since then and the winery is thriving.” In fact, the facility expanded to 5,400 sq.ft. and in 2014 the business grew by 15 percent. It’s certainly a well-established business in Sidney, and has been operating continuously for 27 years. Although southern Vancouver Island has many excellent vineyards and wineries, Maureen was insistent that her wine-making kits also produce high-class wines of comparable quality. Peninsula U-Brew Winery uses wine-making kits from Winexpert, who “source highquality grape juice and concentrate from the world’s best wine regions” (www.winexpert.com) including Italy, France, Chile, Argentina, California and Australia. According to Maureen, Winexpert is constantly researching methods to improve U-brew wine. “They now add grape skins to some wine kits that during the fermentation process enhances the body, tannin and aroma of the wine.” We’ve also introduced aging in oak barrels. Although it takes more time, the barrel adds a moderate oak flavour as well as a very mild tannin. Peninsula offers about 100 different wines. Maureen prefers red wines and her favourites are the Argentinian Malbec and Old Vine Zinfandel from California. The most popular white wine they sell is the Italian Pinot Grigio while the reds are split among several types. More than 150,000 bottles of wine are made each year. The business should expand since the provincial government has recently allowed the serving of U-brew wines at private and special events. “Stan and I are quite knowledgeable about all our wines and, in addition, one of our staff is a second-level sommelier,” said Maureen, “so we can help our customers with wine selection.” Maureen and her husband were both born in British Columbia. They’re locals, having lived in Sidney for 27 years. Their home is in Deep Cove where they live with two sons ages 18 and 23. Maureen loves horses and volunteers one day a week at a nearby stable. “I muck the stalls so I can ride,” she says with a grin. “I love our wine business,” said Maureen. “My favourite part is interacting with the people, both the staff and customers.” Learn more at www.peninsulaubrewwinery.com.
