Think Local
... In Downtown Sidney
Part of what makes our neighbourhoods special are the businesses that thrive within them. As Saanich Peninsula entrepreneurs we strive to meet the needs of, and give back to, our diverse community. We ask that you please take a minute to think about the large potential of your consumer dollar.
When you shop local, more revenue remains in your community, supporting parks, schools and more! For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $46 is recirculated back into the local economy.

The 62nd Annual Spring Show & Sale Saanich Peninsula Arts & Crafts Society As the incomparable Fran Willis once wrote, “… original art is very important in our lives, touching a deeper level of awareness … where the direct creative energy of the artist can be felt.” For a rich experience of original art produced by dedicated and talented local artists, visit The 62nd Annual Spring Show & Sale of works produced by members of SPAC - the Saanich Peninsula Arts & Crafts Society. This exhibition will be open April 25 & 26, from 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. on Saturday, and from 10.00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, at the Mary Winspear Community Centre in Sidney. All art, from greeting cards to large masterpieces, is for sale - with a wide range of price points. In addition to over 500 works by painters, sculptors, jewelers, calligraphers, as well as ceramic, fabric, glass, and metal artists, you will see the stunning work of special guest artist, Rande Cook (www.randecook/about.html). Chief Rande Cook was born in culture-rich Alert Bay and now resides in Victoria. He has worked with many great mentors such as John Livingston and also Calvin Hunt for his mastery in wood sculpting, Robert Davidson in metal work, and most recently he studied with Repousee and Chasing master, Valentin Yotkov. Rande produces works in wood, metal (gold and
aprilevents
silver), as well as paintings, rugs, and other custom artworks. This exhibition will also showcase the arts with fascinating artist demonstrations in various mediums, beautiful floral displays, and a gift shop for smaller original artwork such as greeting cards, pottery, jewellery, and paintings. We encourage you to vote for your favourite piece in the main gallery exhibit. Your ballot will be entered in the draw for unique artist-crafted door prizes. For those art lovers who want a sneak preview of the show, sign up to be a Patron by contacting Donna Jean: djbl@shaw.ca or call her at 250.655.1855. As a Patron, you will be supporting the artists by pledging $125, $100 of which will be applied towards your purchase of art. Then spend the Friday evening before the show opens along with other Patrons and have this early opportunity to purchase your favourite piece. There will also be fine wine and delectable hors d’oeuvres for you to enjoy, as well as the opportunity to meet and talk with the artists. Join us the last weekend in April for this delightful celebration of the Visual Arts!

Oral Care for All One day a few years ago, two women discovered they both had the same dream. Mitra Hashemi and Heather Burkett’s dream was to provide a place where children and adolescents from lower income families could access oral care. They decided to form a not-for-profit organization that would help them realize this dream. It was called ORCCA (Oral Care for Children and Adolescents.) Last month these two passionate and determined ladies, along with the other members of the ORCCA board, realized this dream. The opening of the ORRCA Dental Clinic Society in the annex of Sidney elementary school was a celebration extraordinaire. It seemed that
everyone from the peninsula community was involved in the success of this event ... from Marie Cooper’s opening prayer, Kenny Podmore’s cry, the Sidney school choir, the Murray Pettinger Band, Marigold Nurseries, Starbucks and Thrifty Foods, to local children providing artwork. They all volunteered their time or donated something! Tours of the clinic were skillfully handled by Sidney Elementary, North Saanich Middle School students and Telus Ambassadors. The event was well attended by several local dignitaries, Sannich School Board representatives, teachers, administrators, local families, members of the dental association, the Camosun College dental school students and staff, sponsors, donors and interested members of the community. They all came out to celebrate the opening of the new not-for-profit dental clinic.

The old annex was transformed into a welcoming place for families where one could see the two dental chairs and equipment which had already been used for patients. On the walls were children’s art works, highlighted by a pink tooth fairy quilt made by Karen Hilder (an ever generous Telus ambassador). In the waiting area of the clinic was the blue, 8 ft long Donor’s Wall with the ORCCA logo in the centre. It provided everyone with a glimpse of the many generous supporters of ORCCA over the years. The second part of the celebration took place in the Sidney school gym. Balloons, flowers and more children’s artwork was on display as guests helped themselves to cake and a beverage. As sponsors, donors and guests gathered in front of the stage Heather reiterated the fact that everyone

deserved access to oral care. She told the story of children and adolescents whose behavior problems at school were defined by their poor oral health. She told of dentists whose young patients needed to have their teeth pulled out because they could not afford to have crowns or fillings. Heather and Mitra presented Certificates of Appreciation as Keray Wing, former administrator of North Sannich School, introduced the many recipients. The event concluded with Heather thanking every single person that had been involved with ORCCA over the years, making the clinic grand opening a reality. As the crowd applauded, the two determined, compassionate woman hugged each other. Luckily, someone had the forethought to have a box of Kleenex placed discreetly in the lower shelf of the podium.

Museum. This year we are presenting a spectacular exhibit produced by some of the finest quilters in the area, the Loose Threads quilting group. Quilts made by Loose Threads members range from traditional, contemporary to modern art and the display is peppered with a few antique quilts collected over the years. Wall hangings, lap and bed quilts are represented. Included are quilts made by former member, the late Moira Cannata, whose miniature pieced quilts were juried into the Houston International Quilt Festival 10 times. Formed in 1998, Loose Threads meets weekly on Monday nights in members’ homes. All 10 members are present only four to five times a year as some are snowbirds and all love to travel. Included in the membership is Daphne Greig who is a pattern designer, international teacher and co-author of five quilting books. Daphne states that her “contemporary art celebrates elements and growth in nature, most particularly the growth of trees and plants and my personal growth as an artist. I focus on visual texture of fabrics and surface texture created with stitching and embellishments. I often work spontaneously in response to an idea or feeling. All types of textiles have a place in my work, as do many surface design techniques. My goal is to communicate awareness of the world around us with my work.” The group works together to make and donate quilts to The Victoria Quilters’ Guild project for the neo natal unit at Victoria General Hospital and for disasters such as the High River flood. In addition members donate quilts to Victoria’s Quilts Canada supporting Cancer patients and baby quilts and Quilts of Valour to Canadian forces members. The quilt exhibit is on display at Sidney Museum during the month of April. The museum is open 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily, admission is by donation.

This is part of a rotating series of articles on members of Sidney Meet Up Women’s Networking Group, featuring women in business on the Saanich Peninsula. On Fran Daviss’ business cards, a photo of an elderly hand held by a younger one reflects the core of what she does: lending a helping hand to very vulnerable members of our community. When people are in the last stages of their lives or have disabling conditions, they become more vulnerable to people who may take advantage of their fragility. More than ever before, they may need someone to look out for them and their interests. By providing this service in her new business, Fran Daviss is making an important contribution to our community. As a Certified Financial Planner, a Certified Senior Advisor and a Personal Financial Planner, Fran has extensive knowledge of financial, investment, tax, will and estate planning. She is proud to offer “Consulting by Fran” to adults of all ages. Within “Consulting by Fran”, she can act as someone’s Power of Attorney. “There comes a time in many people’s lives when they are either not comfortable looking after their own finances or are simply no longer capable of doing it.” With one client, the woman wanted to sell some properties. As Power of Attorney, Fran discovered that her client had paid out money years before to a company for renovations that were never done. Fran took control of the situation, hired another company who did the renovations and the two condos were successfully sold. “I protect my clients’ best interests” asserts Fran. When the same client’s children wanted her to move back East, Fran asked her, Do you want to move? No, she said. The woman chose to live in a local retirement home; she loves it there and is active and “having a ball.” Fran involves the family in her work with their mother and reports to them constantly. Putting her client’s well-being above everything else, Fran keeps a trained expert eye on the woman’s finances and investments. She does everything possible to safeguard her interests. “The clients become my friends. I really like to help them and be their advocate.” In her consulting business, Fran also acts as an Executor / Trustee for clients, and does Will and Estate Planning. “I bring a personal approach to the job.” Fran works very hard on the fine details of end-of-life decisions and arrangements. “I really try to dive down into what their wishes are.” Fran’s genuine caring nature shows: “Some people do not have anyone to advocate for them. That is where I come in – to protect them in the long run and do what’s right.” We are all vulnerable sometimes and need an ally to look out for us. Fran Daviss has found her niche. Should you incorporate? When starting a business, most people have three major objectives: limiting their personal liability, advantageous tax planning and control over decisions. There are a number of business structures available but unfortunately no form of business organization achieves all three main objectives. Sole proprietorship, partnership, limited partnership, limited liability partnership and corporations are the most commonly known vehicles of business organization. Each has its own specific advantages and disadvantages and more than one vehice may be suitable in any given situation. A popular option for business owners is a corporation. A corporation is a separate legal entity which has the right to enter into contracts, hold property in its name and sue or be sued. Some of the advantages of using a corporation are: its potential immortality, limited liability of shareholders, ease of transfer of shares, separate legal entity status apart from its shareholders and possible tax advantages.
