shoP local. think local.
Part of what makes our neighbourhoods special are the businesses that thrive within them. As Saanich Peninsula entrepreneurs we strive to meet the needs of and give back to our diverse community. We ask that you please take a minute to think about the large potential of your consumer dollar. You are investing in your community by supporting its unique businesses. Appreciate what makes our neighbourhoods different. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an inherent part of the distinctive character of our neighbourhoods; that is what brought us here and will keep us here. Shop local and stay connected to the merchants in your community.

ur Put yo ere y wh mone s ouse i h r u yo When you shop local, three times the revenue remains in your community, supporting parks, schools and more! For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $45 goes back into the community and our tax base. For every $100 spent at a chain store, only $14 comes back.
live local / give local Community involvement works both ways. Many retailers believe in being involved: giving back to their communities is the right thing to do and they cheerfully donate to a variety of local causes, charities, fund raisers and sports teams. When businesses “give back,” communities appreciate the support and reciprocate.
helP the environment Independent businesses make purchases requiring less transportation and are usually located in the heart of small communities rather than “on the fringe,” meaning less impact on the environment.
If you have a favourite business in your community, please continue to support it all year round. This will ensure we are all here for the long haul!
get better service Local businesses often hire people who have a better understanding of the products they’re selling and take more time to get to know their customers.

The Sidney Saturday Market by Adrienne Dyer
In Sidney, the shopping is
always varied and interesting, especially on Saturdays, when vendors transform the space above Odyssia Restaurant into a lively little indoor market. Open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the free weekly market offers jewelry, works by local artists, live music and a café. Fancy a little glimpse into your future? There’s a Tarot card reader on hand to lend sage advice about your life’s direction. Hungry? There are fresh muffins and scones available in the café, or you can sample a savoury empanada pastry from Peru. An exciting evolution of the market is two new boutique-style shops, now open three days a week within the market space. Awardwinning artist Sherry Williams stocks Sacred Crystal Journey with her
own artwork, along with a stunning collection of silver, gemstone, and bead jewelry. Meanwhile, Norma Jeans’ Closet stocks designer shoes and clothing, handmade hats, jewelry and vintage dresses. “Clothing makes the woman, and accessories makes the clothes,” says Cheryl Holmes Young, who co-founded Norma Jeans’ Closet with a handful of dynamic Sidney businesswomen to bring something entirely fresh and new to the local fashion scene. Marilyn Monroe would have approved. Norma Jeans’ Closet and Sacred Crystal Journey are open Thursday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and by appointment. Find Norma Jeans’ Closet and the Sidney Saturday Market on Facebook for more details!

A new movement is afoot on Vancouver Island, and it is a force to be reckoned with: Argentine tango! Dedicated dancers wishing to promote the many benefits this dance has to offer can be found in Victoria, Crofton, Nanaimo, the Comox Valley and now in Sidney. Cordelia McIntosh of Runway Tango in Sidney shares some reasons for Argentine tango’s growing popularity: “The music and dance is rich in traditions, transcending both cultural differences and age-related stereotypes. It has both physical and emotional benefits … and has even recently been used as therapy for soldiers coming back from war. It allows people to connect emotionally in a non-threatening and enjoyable manner. People are longing for connectedness in these times where personal or human interactions seem at best fleeting and the exception rather than the norm. It is not a rigid dance, but allows for creativity and personal interpretation – once the basic steps are learned. If you can walk, you can dance tango.” Last summer McIntosh organized weekly dances (known as milongas) at the Sidney Bandshell to see if there was interest in the area. Diane Tolomeo of Tango Pacifico in Victoria provided added support. The reception they received was overwhelming. In February Dalie Green of Sidney joined forces. Runway Tango got its name as a result of its location beside the airport, and took off in style with instructors Luciano Brigante and Alejandra Orozco from Buenos Aires stopping in to provide lessons on their North American tour! Local and visiting DJ’s from as far away as Vancouver, Seattle and Olympia, Washington provide music that has attracted dancers from all corners of the globe: Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, Greater Vancouver, Washington, California, Australia, Europe and South America. What can newcomers expect? Although each tango community has its own distinct characteristics, making it as unique as the location and members who attend, they all share the same traditions. The communities tend to be very welcoming. Each milonga usually starts with a lesson or practice session (practica). Once you take your first steps, you can expect to be welcomed at milongas all over the world! Regular milongas in Sidney take place from 2:30 to 7 p.m. at Catalina Grill House beside the airport at #202 - 9800 McDonald Park Road on the fourth Sunday of every month. Free lessons are available for the first half hour. The $10 cover charge includes a $5 food credit voucher. For updated information visit www.runwaytango.com. Plans are in place for returning to the bandshell this summer on the fourth Sunday in July and August, immediately following the Celebration Society events. Come and enjoy both! Better yet: bring leather-soled shoes and give tango a try … newcomers are welcomed with open arms!
Fake or Fortune in Sidney? Rembrandt or Caravaggio? What will it be? The line-up is at Odette Laroche Gallery on Beacon by Fairway Market, the upstairs gallery overlooking the ocean. Yes, there are fabulous fakes of Rembrandt’s and Caravaggio’s originals. They are wonderfully painted in the style of the old masters called Grisaille. This is a method of painting used exclusively by the old masters up until the turn of the century when Impressionism became popular. The Grisaille method is still used today and calls for a perfect image in charcoal on canvas, which is then sprayed with a fixative. The process of layering paint with only five colours and white begins and ends with glazes that that enhance the glow in skin transparencies. Blue had not yet been invented when this method was used. The rest of the work to be exhibited at the show are remarkable and expertly-painted works ranging from still life, landscapes and seascapes to other subject matters such as old cars, bison and polar bears. The show is an impressive mix of originals done in several styles

of painting ranging from impasto and impressionism to photorealism. There are 12 artists showing their accomplished works and the variety is astounding. The group has painted together for several years, and everyone has developed a unique style of their own while building their skills. The paintings become more complex with each canvas, which are mostly done in oils and some in acrylics. The show is diversified, interesting and addresses everyone’s taste. It is a “must-see.” Who knows: you may end up owning a masterpiece by the next upcoming Rembrandt … or perhaps you prefer one of the impressionist masters at affordable prices? If you have dreamed of owning a Rembrandt or Caravaggio, here is your chance! Two artists will be demonstrating painting process in different styles of painting daily. The artists will show you how it is done and you may even want to place a brush in your hand. The Fake or Fortune Art Show is lovely to look at and very educational too. It runs July 1st to 13th. There will be a Meet the Artists Reception and Open House on Saturday, July 5th from 1 to 4 p.m. For inquiries and appointments call 250-655-8278.

Sidney Firefighters Celebrate 100 years! The Sidney Volunteer Firefighter’s Association will turn 100 years old this August, but how well do you know your local Firefighters? Then … On August 4th, 1914, a small group of men in Sidney had their first firefighting drill. The first equipment purchased was a hand-drawn hose reel and 600 feet of two-and-a-half inch hose, nozzle and an axe. The first motor vehicle was a 1912 Cadillac donated by G. Clark. It was converted by volunteer effort and placed in service in 1935. In 1941, a 1934 Ford 1.5-ton truck was declared surplus by the Provincial Public Works and acquired by the department the next year. Fitted with a 300-gallon tank, hose and equipment, compartments and ladder racks, she is known as “Old Betsy.” Now … Today the Sidney Fire Department continues to maintain the outstanding relationship with the community that was forged so many years ago. The department now consists of five full-time paid members and 35 volunteers. Equipment and apparatus changes, advancements in technology and training practices all help to ensure that our firefighters maintain the highest quality of skillsets, including: firefighting, first responder for medical aid, auto extrication, rope rescue and other requirements as needed to support the community during emergencies. These highly-dedicated individuals spend an enormous amount of time training, attending charity events and responding 24 hours a day when the pager sounds!

Your volunteer firefighters participate in numerous charity events year round that help to raise funds for worthy causes that impact Sidney and surrounding communities. 4. Volunteer applications are accepted throughout the year. Stop by the fire hall or visit the website for more information: http://www. sidney.ca/Municipal_Hall/Departments/Emergency_Services/ Fire_Department/Volunteer_Recruitment.htm. 5. Lego Professional Robin Sather built a replica of Sidney’s “Ladder 903” which was on display in the Sidney Museum in February and March. Join Us! We will be celebrating our 100th anniversary on Saturday, August 2nd. Please come out and join us for the Fire Apparatus parade through the streets of Sidney. Vintage Trucks, Engines, Ladders and more will be on display from various Departments and collectors. This invitation provides an opportunity to meet Firefighters, family and friends, tell a story or two and share in this historic occasion. We hope to see you there!
