Part of what makes our neighbourhoods special are the businesses that thrive within them. As Saanich Peninsula entrepreneurs we strive to meet the needs of and give back to our diverse community. We ask that you please take a minute to think about the large potential of your consumer dollar. You are investing in your community by supporting its unique businesses. Appreciate what makes our neighbourhoods different. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an inherent part of the distinctive character of our neighbourhoods; that is what brought us here and will keep us here. Shop local and stay connected to the merchants in your community.

live local / give local Community involvement works both ways. Many retailers believe in being involved: giving back to their communities is the right thing to do. They cheerfully donate five times more per dollar of revenue to groups in their community. When businesses “give back,” communities appreciate the support and reciprocate.

helP the environment Local businesses reduce transportation impacts associated with global supply chains when they work with local producers, manufacturers and distributors.

If you have a favourite business in your community, please continue to support it all year round. This will ensure we are all here for the long haul! courtesy www.locobc.com

book review

Summer is Now in FULL SWING!

on and off the rails from milan to palermo, by tim parks Italian Ways is a book for people who love Italy. It is for those who have been there, because reading it will bring back happy memories. It is for those who would like to visit and wonder what to expect, and it's also for people who simply enjoy travel books by authors like Paul Theroux and Bill Bryson. reviewed by As a writer who calls Italy his adopted home, Carole Pearson Parks offers more depth in his observations than someone just passing through. Parks is a British ex-pat who has lived in Italy for more than 30 years. He proposes the idea that if one wants to understand Italy (or any country, for that matter), examine its railway system. Over the years, Parks has kept notes on his train-related experiences which support his theory. These ended up forming 120 pages of written material and became the basis of his latest book, Italian Ways. Parks combines humour to offset his flashes of petulance and irritation with a railway system that defies his sense of logic. He argues with train conductors who fail to be persuaded by his efforts to reason. Small victories impress only himself; more often he ends up chagrined by his outbursts. Tim Parks tells readers at the outset that Italian Ways "is not a history book, nor exactly a travel book though there is travel and history in it." It isn't really about trains, either, but all these things combined within Parks' own story. Parks has lived and worked in northern Italy. In the first part of the book, he describes the challenges to buying a train ticket, the peculiarities of station announcements and his difficulties in locating the "lost" Lost Property office in Milano Centrale. Despite his mock fits of pique, it is plain that Parks' critical observations are meant with affection. In the latter part of Italian Ways, Parks takes a holiday and travels along the bottom of the Italian "boot" towards Otranto. When he perseveres along a bleak, ugly walk from the station in Crotone, Parks is rewarded with the discovery of the "intriguing" old centre of town with its "honeycomb" of alleyways and ends his day with a swim in the warm sea at sunset. Parks has evidently found "la dolce vita." They keep the beat "workin" on acoustic and archtop guitars, upright bass and Resophonic steel guitars. Beats Workin, as a group, is brand new to Canada's music scene, but its members are most definitely not newcomers. Meet David K, Mark Johnson and Bob de Wolff in the Club's casual setting.
