Shop local / think local
Part of what makes our neighbourhoods special are the businesses that thrive within them. As Saanich Peninsula entrepreneurs we strive to meet the needs of and give back to our diverse community. We ask that you please take a minute to think about the large potential of your consumer dollar. You are investing in your community by supporting its unique businesses. Appreciate what makes our neighbourhoods different. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an inherent part of the distinctive character of our neighbourhoods; that is what brought us here and will keep us here. Shop local and stay connected to the merchants in your community.

ur put yo ere y wh mone S ouSe i h r u yo When you shop local, three times the revenue remains in your community, supporting parks, schools and more! For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $45 goes back into the community and our tax base. For every $100 spent at a chain store, only $14 comes back.
live local / give local Community involvement works both ways. Many retailers believe in being involved: giving back to their communities is the right thing to do and they cheerfully donate to a variety of local causes, charities, fund raisers and sports teams. When businesses “give back,” communities appreciate the support and reciprocate.
help the environment Independent businesses make purchases requiring less transportation and are usually located in the heart of small communities rather than “on the fringe,” meaning less impact on the environment.
If you have a favourite business in your community, please continue to support it all year round. This will ensure we are all here for the long haul!
get better Service Local businesses often hire people who have a better understanding of the products they’re selling and take more time to get to know their customers.

Peninsula Country Market Joins Brentwood Days for Season Opener! by Helen Safar The Peninsula’s favourite outdoor market is pleased to announce its new partnership with the Brentwood Bay Festival event on Saturday, June 1st in celebration of the start of the Market Season, and to show support for this long-standing community tradition in Brentwood. By amalgamating the season opening market day with the “Brentwood Bay Festival,” June
1st, residents will no longer have to make a choice as to which of these important community events to attend. In past years, many residents on the Saanich Peninsula divided their first Saturday of June trying to attend both the opening day of the Peninsula Country Market and the annual Brentwood Bay Festival. Local residents now get the benefit of one amazing event. “We look forward to bringing more vendors to this fun local event,”

notes Peninsula Country Market President Jim Townley. “For the past five years we’ve started our season the first Saturday of June at the request of the vendors. The challenge was … we were crowd splitting, so neither event could realize its full potential.” The Peninsula Country Market is starting its 22nd consecutive year, and in fact it’s the longest running open-air market on South Vancouver Island. This weekly gathering event for many residents of the Saanich Peninsula is not only a prime place to buy locally grown produce, specialty foods and crafts: it’s become a community gathering experience. Bringing the additional vendor and selection to the Festival will uplift what has become a Central Saanich tradition. The Brentwood Bay Festival hosts a parade, wide selection of local entertainment, a pancake

breakfast, comedy acts, face painting and many more reasons to celebrate Brentwood Bay as an amazing place to live and visit. For more information on the Brentwood Bay Festival event visit www.brentwoodbay.info or www.peninsulacountrymarket.ca. About the Peninsula Country Market: What started out as a small group of local famers rolling into the parking lot of the old Saanich Fairgrounds (originally in Saanichton) on Saturday mornings to sell their food (farmer direct) from the tailgates of their trucks has evolved into one of the best places to shop for local produce on the Saanich Peninsula. What has not changed over the past 22 years is the social aspect of what the Country Market brings to the residents of the Peninsula.

You Can Go Home Again! Peninsula Dry Grad Society Brings After-Grad Back to Sidney by Linda Hunter “The best part about having an After-Grad was having all the graduates together in one place. So much was happening; there was always something for everyone to enjoy. The After-Grad left me and my friends with tons of memories and great photos!” For grade 12 students and their families, high school graduation is a time filled with pride and celebration. This very special year culminates in June, often with a graduation ceremony, a school sponsored dinner and dance, and then for many, the all-important "all night grad party." Since 2006, Parkland Secondary's graduates have been enjoying an exciting and memorable graduation day at the University of Victoria, including an afternoon graduation ceremony, a dinner dance, and finally, an unforgettable all-night dry, safe After-Grad. In 2005, when a group of parent volunteers, supported by the Parkland administration, wanted to introduce an all-night, dry grad event, it required a marketing plan; for many the all-night grad party had always included alcohol. The plan was to create an all-inclusive, unforgettable "dry" event that would provide non-stop entertainment, provide lifelong memories and be the party that no one wanted to miss; it required a

shift in the collective thinking around how graduation is celebrated. While the dry grad concept is not a new one, when first introduced, it can be a difficult sell. For many it takes years for a culture to shift, to come around to the idea that it is less about the alcohol, and more about an inclusive event – one final night for the entire class to celebrate together, without barriers, in a safe and secure environment. Seven years later, for Parkland Secondary students, the all-night dry, safe After-Grad has become a tradition and one that graduates are excited about in September and grateful for in June. While it made sense in the beginning to host the After-Grad event at UVic, where the students were already enjoying much of their grad day celebrations, it now makes even more sense to return to Sidney. This June, the Peninsula Dry Grad Society, supported by local business, a community that cares, and Parkland's 40th graduating class, will host the 2013 After-Grad event at the Mary Winspear Centre, where students will enjoy an all-night safe, dry After-Grad that they have come to know and love, right here at home. June 26th in Sidney will be unforgettable: an After-Grad celebration filled with dining, dancing, games, karaoke, photos, live entertainers and much more. The 2013 graduating class will enjoy one final night, surrounded by friends, and they will do it all in a safe, secure, dry environment; a night to remember! For more information, contact Eleanor Jones, the President of the Peninsula Dry Grad Society (eleanorjones@shaw.ca).
