Shop local / think local

Part of what makes our neighbourhoods special are the businesses that thrive within them. As Saanich Peninsula entrepreneurs we strive to meet the needs of and give back to our diverse community. We ask that you please take a minute to think about the large potential of your consumer dollar. You are investing in your community by supporting its unique businesses. Appreciate what makes our neighbourhoods different. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an inherent part of the distinctive character of our neighbourhoods; that is what brought us here and will keep us here. Shop local and stay connected to the merchants in your community.

you hav ea choice where to Spend your mo ney

ur put yo ere y wh mone S ouSe i h r u yo When you shop local, three times the revenue remains in your community, supporting parks, schools and more! For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $45 goes back into the community and our tax base. For every $100 spent at a chain store, only $14 comes back.

live local / give local Community involvement works both ways. Many retailers believe in being involved: giving back to their communities is the right thing to do and they cheerfully donate to a variety of local causes, charities, fund raisers and sports teams. When businesses “give back,” communities appreciate the support and reciprocate.

help the environment Independent businesses make purchases requiring less transportation and are usually located in the heart of small communities rather than “on the fringe,” meaning less impact on the environment.

If you have a favourite business in your community, please continue to support it all year round. This will ensure we are all here for the long haul!

get better Service Local businesses often hire people who have a better understanding of the products they’re selling and take more time to get to know their customers.

Sidney Street Market Ready to Roll!

Street Market. So get your shopping bags, sunglasses and sandals ready!

by Susan Simosko by Susan Simosko June 21st may be the first day of summer, but here on the Saanich Peninsula the season begins in earnest with the opening of the Sidney

The Market begins at 5:30 p.m. on May 30th and runs through August 29th. That’s 14 Thursday evenings you can stroll, shop, chat with friends and linger over a coffee or something more substantial. Laurie McDermid, the Market Coordinator, is understandably enthusiastic. “This is a fabulous destination market,” she says, “a great place to bring friends and family. Truly, there is something for absolutely everyone.”

Laurie takes pleasure in describing the wonderful selection of artisan creations, beautiful crafts and outstanding produce the 160 or so vendors will offer. Some vendors in the craft area, she tells me, include younger, up-and-coming entrepreneurs. “We want to keep the market fresh – and what better way than to include vendors representing diverse talents and perspectives.” And what about the food and entertainment? “We’ve got a great selection of both,” says Laurie, “including a variety of tasty, affordable market foods and a great mix of street performers. Together I think we’ve got the perfect ingredients for a fun and exciting Market.”

Kristin Rose, the owner of Cameron Rose on Beacon Avenue, adds another perspective: “From what I’ve seen, the Market brings the community together culturally, artistically and commercially. We have so much creativity to celebrate here on the Peninsula. What better place to showcase it than at our summer Market!” A number of shops will be open late on Market nights too. As Doug Stuart, the owner of Stonestreet Café, sees it, the market represents a strong and happy collaborative effort between the business community, the Town of Sidney and the not-for-profit sector. “We hope,” Doug says, “that people will come to the Market to fully experience some of the best

age to find – and afford – that certain little something special.

All involved are pleased that visitors at some markets will include passengers from cruise ships.

Asked what she has most enjoyed about organizing the Sidney Street Market, Laurie offers a quick reply: “Without doubt it’s been the fabulous team effort. Everyone has been incredibly supportive and cooperative. I think we’ve all shared the same vision: to create a Market that is fun, exciting and safe – one that people of all ages can enjoy as we savour the very best of summer here on the Peninsula.”

Although the focus is on goods made, grown or baked here on the Island, according to Laurie, Market vendors will come from across the region. All price ranges be 2013 represented, encouraging people of any Pebbles SSTwill Ad May Size: 3.75” (w) x 4.925” (h) • REV1 • May 16/13
