Shop local / think local

Part of what makes our neighbourhoods special are the businesses that thrive within them. As Saanich Peninsula entrepreneurs we strive to meet the needs of and give back to our diverse community. We ask that you please take a minute to think about the large potential of your consumer dollar. You are investing in your community by supporting its unique businesses. Appreciate what makes our neighbourhoods different. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an inherent part of the distinctive character of our neighbourhoods; that is what brought us here and will keep us here. Shop local and stay connected to the merchants in your community.

you hav ea choice where to Spend your mo ney

ur put yo ere y wh mone S ouSe i h r u yo When you shop local, three times the revenue remains in your community, supporting parks, schools and more! For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $45 goes back into the community and our tax base. For every $100 spent at a chain store, only $14 comes back.

live local / give local Community involvement works both ways. Many retailers believe in being involved: giving back to their communities is the right thing to do and they cheerfully donate to a variety of local causes, charities, fund raisers and sports teams. When businesses “give back,” communities appreciate the support and reciprocate.

help the environment Independent businesses make purchases requiring less transportation and are usually located in the heart of small communities rather than “on the fringe,” meaning less impact on the environment.

If you have a favourite business in your community, please continue to support it all year round. This will ensure we are all here for the long haul!

get better Service Local businesses often hire people who have a better understanding of the products they’re selling and take more time to get to know their customers.

great event. The race has been sponsored by Slegg Lumber in Sidney for the last 28 years. Wow! Canada Day is chock full of fun and celebration.

Sidney Merchants’ Co-op Sidewalk Sale Sunday, June 30th At its inception almost 30 years ago, the Sidney Sidewalk sale was an integral part of the wonderful celebration we hold in Sidney over the July 1st long weekend. Always held on the Sunday closest to July 1st, it used to incorporate all kinds of family activities as well as a wellsupported sidewalk sale, held by the Sidney merchants, on the street

between 2nd and 5th on Beacon. We had a fundraising “dunk tank” held by the Firemen, face painting, music, people making toy balloons and many other activities for children, teens, and adults. And yes, there was a beer garden at Tulista! The Sidewalk sale was run by the merchant’s organization of the day; we merchants rented tables from them and did our thing. It was a very enjoyable and highly profitable day for everyone. Over the years, this fun day of activity has dwindled, but our Merchants’ Co-op has been working hard over the last couple of years to reinstate it. This year we will celebrate between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 30th, on Beacon Avenue and some of the side streets too. We will have posters up of participating merchants and we invite everyone to come out and enjoy a wonderful day in our beautiful town!

veterinary voice "the essence is compassion. Compassion for the animals we tend, and beyond that to the people whose lives are intricately involved with those animals."

Have You Hugged Your Vet Today? by Dr. Shelley Breadner

July will see the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association holding its 65th annual medical conference in Victoria, B.C. Over 700 attendees will gather to share knowledge, experience and collegial friendships. But do you really know what veterinarians do? Yes, they tend to your cat and your dog, but their skills and knowledge extend far beyond that.

Veterinarians are known for their excellence in health care. In general medical practice, veterinarians have a vast scope of knowledge and skills, providing care in medicine, surgery, dentistry, diagnostic imaging (x-ray, ultrasound, endoscopy) and beyond. There are 22 recognized specialty Associations in North America, and 39 speciality groups. Veterinarians work on the cutting edge of genetics, public health with infectious diseases and food safety, medical research and more. One thing is for certain: being a veterinarian always brings new challenges, diversity in your work and endless opportunity for learning and growing.

To obtain a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree in Canada, a minimum of six years of university education is required: two years of pre-veterinary study at a regular university, followed by four years of courses in veterinary medicine at one of the five Canadian veterinary colleges (five years in the province of Quebec). The selection process is rigorous in order to find the most suitable candidates. The veterinary program is challenging, yet rewarding. Canadian veterinary colleges currently graduate about 400 veterinarians each year. What makes a good veterinarian? What is the essence that is sought out during student selection? It is the same one sought by all people who search for a relationship with their veterinarian. The essence is compassion. Compassion for the animals we tend, and beyond that to the people whose lives are intricately involved with those animals. It has been 30 years since I received the honour of graduating as a veterinarian. I will gather with a fair number of classmates as we celebrate our anniversary. We were all in the crucible of learning together, and we forged a lifelong connection as veterinarians. Getting together will be like a family gathering. When I look into the eyes of each of my colleagues, I know I will see compassion in their hearts. Compassion was the essence that brought us together as young, eager students, and it has only been deepened by our relationship with animals through the years. A tip of the hat to all the great veterinarians out there! If you know one, be sure to give them a hug of appreciation! For more information visit www.breadnervet.com.
