Shop local / think local

Part of what makes our neighbourhoods special are the businesses that thrive within them. As Saanich Peninsula entrepreneurs we strive to meet the needs of and give back to our diverse community. We ask that you please take a minute to think about the large potential of your consumer dollar. You are investing in your community by supporting its unique businesses. Appreciate what makes our neighbourhoods different. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an inherent part of the distinctive character of our neighbourhoods; that is what brought us here and will keep us here. Shop local and stay connected to the merchants in your community.

you hav ea choice where to Spend your mo ney

ur put yo ere y wh mone S ouSe i h r u yo When you shop local, three times the revenue remains in your community, supporting parks, schools and more! For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $45 goes back into the community and our tax base. For every $100 spent at a chain store, only $14 comes back.

live local / give local Community involvement works both ways. Many retailers believe in being involved: giving back to their communities is the right thing to do and they cheerfully donate to a variety of local causes, charities, fund raisers and sports teams. When businesses “give back,” communities appreciate the support and reciprocate.

help the environment Independent businesses make purchases requiring less transportation and are usually located in the heart of small communities rather than “on the fringe,” meaning less impact on the environment.

If you have a favourite business in your community, please continue to support it all year round. This will ensure we are all here for the long haul!

get better Service Local businesses often hire people who have a better understanding of the products they’re selling and take more time to get to know their customers.

Tivoli Gallery: A Model For Women in Business by Doreen Marion Gee

Inga Michel sets the bar for female success in business. On August 1st, Inga will celebrate 28 years of a thriving Sidney enterprise – Tivoli Gallery. Inga is a shining example to female entrepreneurs wishing to make their mark in this community. She has sage advice on how to keep a business alive and well through good times and bad. An independent-thinking, creative free spirit, Inga is the kind of strong woman who puts a definite sparkle in our seaside community. At 75, Inga Michel is funny, full of energy and refreshingly honest. Inga elegantly dispels all those preconceptions about inevitable decline with age. A self-proclaimed “late bloomer,” the owner of Tivoli Gallery was almost 50 when she started her gallery business in 1985. A widow, Inga built up a successful business along with raising her son. In 1987 Inga turned her love for birds into a lifelong passion – her Inga Birds, quirky little creatures beautifully splashed in watercolour, just waiting to fly off the canvas. Those lovable tiny birds have gone to 3,000 owners worldwide – as far as the Galapagos Islands. Inga’s Tivoli Gallery has stood the test of time. She has amassed a stunning selection of high quality handmade crafts and gifts by local artists that will take your breath away: sterling silver eagles to hang

on eager ears; hand puppets with golden aboriginal motifs; cheeky necklaces with bold designs; sculptured rings that glow and sizzle. Inga loves to promote artists and savours her relationships with First Nations’ clients. What are the secrets behind her success? Inga is from the “old school,” raised by immigrant parents who taught her the meaning and value of a hard day’s work. “I have a real work ethic,” Inga confides. She refers to her “selfdiscipline:” getting up every morning, going to work, giving it her best. “You have to be serious about wanting to constantly improve yourself and your business.” Inga deeply values her customers and knows how important they are to her survival. She “spoils them” and greets them when they come in the door. “You have to like people.” Inga has weathered tough times with “a lot of crying and praying” but she just keeps putting one foot in front of the other. A 28-year veteran of main street Sidney, Inga has reason to celebrate. On her 28th anniversary, Inga thanks all of her customers who have supported her over the years. And she holds a special place in her heart for the ones who have passed on. How do I know that Inga Michel is a good business role model? A little bird told me!
