Shop local / think local

Part of what makes our neighbourhoods special are the businesses that thrive within them. As Saanich Peninsula entrepreneurs we strive to meet the needs of and give back to our diverse community. We ask that you please take a minute to think about the large potential of your consumer dollar. You are investing in your community by supporting its unique businesses. Appreciate what makes our neighbourhoods different. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an inherent part of the distinctive character of our neighbourhoods; that is what brought us here and will keep us here. Shop local and stay connected to the merchants in your community.

you hav ea choice where to Spend your mo ney

ur put yo ere y wh mone S ouSe i h r u yo When you shop local, three times the revenue remains in your community, supporting parks, schools and more! For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $45 goes back into the community and our tax base. For every $100 spent at a chain store, only $14 comes back.

live local / give local Community involvement works both ways. Many retailers believe in being involved: giving back to their communities is the right thing to do and they cheerfully donate to a variety of local causes, charities, fund raisers and sports teams. When businesses “give back,” communities appreciate the support and reciprocate.

help the environment Independent businesses make purchases requiring less transportation and are usually located in the heart of small communities rather than “on the fringe,” meaning less impact on the environment.

If you have a favourite business in your community, please continue to support it all year round. This will ensure we are all here for the long haul!

get better Service Local businesses often hire people who have a better understanding of the products they’re selling and take more time to get to know their customers.

Small business ow ners live locally and are therefore more invested in the future of our neig hbourhoods. Loca l entrepreneurs ar e also the largest employer nationa lly and they prov ide the most jobs to new residents.

Fifth Annual Saanich Peninsula Harvest Feast by Jim Townley

Imagine the sound of

table talk so vibrant, and laughter so plentiful, that a musician or band doesn’t stand a chance of being heard! The “Harvest Feast” (as it’s now called) is the culmination of a cluster of culinarily committed volunteers who four years ago wanted to celebrate Saanich Peninsula agriculture and encourage people to support the local farm community by choosing to buy and eat local food first. “We had musicians the first year, but people wanted to talk and catch up and nobody could hear the music,” notes Bob Thompson, lead “Feastie” of the event. Being a “Feastie” has become a badge of honour within the growing group of local residents and volunteers, and the tradition continues with the fifth annual event being held Saturday, September 21st at the Saanich Fairgrounds. Doors open at 5 p.m. and dinner starts at 6 p.m. This year the Harvest Feast is celebrating youth in agriculture and doing some fundraising for local 4-H clubs that are celebrating their 100th Anniversary this year. “The 4-H is an integral part of the Harvest

September events

Feast and they bring such a terrific group of hard-working volunteers; without them the event would be overwhelming,” notes Heather Biasio, another committed “Feastie.” The annual event seats 300 people for dinner and sells out every year. Virtually all the food will be grown here on the Saanich Peninsula, within 10 kilometres of the Saanich Fairgrounds (except cranberries from Yellow Point). This not-for-profit community event is designed to be as affordable as possible for families ($25/$22BYOP for dinner; children $10/$7 BYOP). Note: BYOP means “Bring Your Own Plate.” The event is organized by volunteers, with the support of the Southern Vancouver Island Direct Farm Marketing Association (most farms provide food at wholesale prices or better) and the North and South Saanich Agricultural Society which is generously providing both the hall and kitchen at no charge. Tickets are now on sale at: the Fresh Cup Roastery Café (Saanichton), Breadstuffs Bakery (Brentwood Bay) and the Roost Farm Centre (North Saanich). Advance tickets only. For more information, visit the event web page at www.islandfarmfresh.com or call 250-812-1312.
