Ready for A Touch of Saltspring? by Barry Mathias

For many people,

the Christmas Art and Craft Show, A Touch of Saltspring, is a shopping highlight of the year. Situated in the Panorama Recreation Centre, it is the largest arts and crafts show on Vancouver Island. It runs from December 6th to the 8th with a threeday pass for only $5 and children go free. The idea for the fair began at a small Christmas market on Salt Spring Island, when Ed and Joan Price and a group of artisan friends realized they needed a bigger venue for their merchandise. “We began in 1991 at the Pro Patria Legion in Burnside,” Ed says. “We moved to the Saanich Fairgrounds in 1992 and expanded to the tennis building at the Panorama site eight years ago.” The original fair attracted 60 vendors, and this year there will be 254, including 10 charities. “I’m already working on the 2014 show,” notes Ed. Originally a candy maker, Ed and his wife became the organizational “masterminds” behind the phenomenal growth of this fair. “It’s a family enterprise,” he says proudly, “even involving in-laws and my 10 grandchildren!” His wife, and daughters Liz and Karol, run the on-site catering; his son, Tony, leads a team of 10 responsible for the huge set-up operation, which “is completed in one day and a night. Takedown begins immediately the show closes at 5 p.m. on Sunday, and by Monday morning the tennis players are back on the courts.” He recalls that one year a huge rainstorm caused serious logistical problems: “In spite of this, we had three of the four courts ready on time.” Ed works “hand-in-glove” with the management of the Centre. “We have our own management team of five, and we provide everything that is needed, including carpets, tables and staff. We employ 25 people over the weekend, and organize parking and ticket sales.” He emphasizes the friendship and professionalism of the vendors. “They only sell what they produce themselves, which means the gifts you buy are unusual

and of high quality.” For the last 10 years the Girl Guides have received a complimentary table, as have some other worthy causes. Last year, Ed and his family became a limited company, and in his 72nd year, he and his wife are preparing to gradually hand over the reins to the younger members. Their success is measured not only in the way A Touch of Salt Spring has expanded, but also in the creation of employment opportunities for family and friends, and in the benefits to the community.
