Shop local / think local

Part of what makes our neighbourhoods special are the businesses that thrive within them. As Saanich Peninsula entrepreneurs we strive to meet the needs of and give back to our diverse community. We ask that you please take a minute to think about the large potential of your consumer dollar. You are investing in your community by supporting its unique businesses. Appreciate what makes our neighbourhoods different. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an inherent part of the distinctive character of our neighbourhoods; that is what brought us here and will keep us here. Shop local and stay connected to the merchants in your community.

you hav ea choice where to Spend your mo ney

ur put yo ere y wh mone uSe iS o h r you When you shop local, three times the revenue remains in your community, supporting parks, schools and more! For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $45 goes back into the community and our tax base. For every $100 spent at a chain store, only $14 comes back.

live local / give local Community involvement works both ways. Many retailers believe in being involved: giving back to their communities is the right thing to do and they cheerfully donate to a variety of local causes, charities, fund raisers and sports teams. When businesses “give back,” communities appreciate the support and reciprocate.

help the environment Independent businesses make purchases requiring less transportation and are usually located in the heart of small communities rather than “on the fringe,” meaning less impact on the environment.

If you have a favourite business in your community, please continue to support it all year round. This will ensure we are all here for the long haul!

get better Service Local businesses often hire people who have a better understanding of the products they’re selling and take more time to get to know their customers.

Sidney Museum renovates to Connect Generations by Susan Simosko If before-and-after pictures excite you, grab your camera and head to the Sidney Museum on Beacon Avenue. This local gem, which attracts about 15,000 visitors annually, is about to undergo a major transformation. Peter Garnham, museum director, is excited about the proposed changes. “We’ve been working on the concept for almost five years,” Peter says. “We have such wonderful artifacts, but we don’t tell the story of Sidney and North Saanich chronologically or completely, so it’s often difficult for visitors to put the pieces together to fully understand our history.” The proposed plan calls for a thorough depiction of the area, from its geological beginnings right up until the 1990s. “We need to bring our history to life and include historical periods not currently well represented at the Museum,” says Board member Peter Wainwright. By way of example, he cites the early pioneers, pirates and the depression era. “We want to highlight unique aspects of our history too. For example, did you know that local farmers grew some of the finest hops in North America and supplied breweries

in Victoria, Seattle and beyond?” While Board members have wanted to expand the Museum for years, space limitations were inevitably an issue. All that changed when Clive Tanner announced that he wasn’t going to renew his Military Bookshop lease. “Suddenly we had an exceptional opportunity,” says Graham Debling, president of the Sidney Museum and Archives Society. “We approached the current owners about purchasing the space and they were very receptive. Happily, we negotiated a positive outcome. With 20% more space, we can not only update the Museum, we can build a whole new experience for residents and visitors alike.” Liz Savage, another Board member who works with the schools, concurs. “With the added space, we can create a highly interactive, fun and educational experience for all. Imagine children’s astonishment,” she tells me, “when they learn that at one time the Peninsula had three railroad lines. Now imagine an interactive display in which the children can actually see and touch those trains. That’s the sort of thing we’re working

towards!” She smiles and adds: “It’s so important for us all to remember how the generations connect.” Current plans call for a two-staged approach. The first will focus on constructing the needed infrastructure: knocking down walls, creating new display areas and introducing the latest technology and lighting. “During the second phase,” Peter Garnham says, “we’ll use artifacts – current and newly acquired – to imaginatively present the area’s rich and colourful story.” For the past few years, the Museum has been quietly acquiring funds for the project. We have about 20% of what’s required,” says Peter Wainright. “Individuals and businesses can support the Museum by sponsoring an actual exhibit or by making a cash or in-kind charitable donation. Everyone’s contribution, however large or small, will be valued and publicly recognized.” To learn more or become a supporter, pick up a leaflet at the Museum in the Old Post Office building or visit www.sidneymuseum.ca.
