Shop local / think local
Part of what makes our neighbourhoods special are the businesses that thrive within them. As Saanich Peninsula entrepreneurs we strive to meet the needs of and give back to our diverse community. We ask that you please take a minute to think about the large potential of your consumer dollar. You are investing in your community by supporting its unique businesses. Appreciate what makes our neighbourhoods different. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an inherent part of the distinctive character of our neighbourhoods; that is what brought us here and will keep us here. Shop local and stay connected to the merchants in your community.

ur put yo ere y wh mone S ouSe i h r u yo When you shop local, three times the revenue remains in your community, supporting parks, schools and more! For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $45 goes back into the community and our tax base. For every $100 spent at a chain store, only $14 comes back.
live local / give local Community involvement works both ways. Many retailers believe in being involved: giving back to their communities is the right thing to do and they cheerfully donate to a variety of local causes, charities, fund raisers and sports teams. When businesses “give back,” communities appreciate the support and reciprocate.
help the environment Independent businesses make purchases requiring less transportation and are usually located in the heart of small communities rather than “on the fringe,” meaning less impact on the environment.
If you have a favourite business in your community, please continue to support it all year round. This will ensure we are all here for the long haul!
get better Service Local businesses often hire people who have a better understanding of the products they’re selling and take more time to get to know their customers.

Sidney’s Summer Sounds Series A perfect example of summer on the Saanich Peninsula is the Summer Sounds Concert Series, put on by the Peninsula Celebrations Society (PCS). The series takes place every Sunday in July and August from 2 to 4 p.m. at Sidney’s Beacon Park. It showcases some of the best talent Vancouver Island has to offer, with musical acts ranging from Rhythm & Blues to Jazz to Classic Rock, and these are big name performers! The Midnights, Shaky Ground and the Timebenders are some of the acts performing this summer. “We’re proud that our organization can provide these types of high calibre concerts to the public for free,” says PCS President Sheilah Fea. “It really brings entertainment to everyone in the community, and it’s so much fun to see people of all ages out in the park, enjoying great music.”
Peninsula Celebrations Society
The PCS is comprised of a group of hard working volunteers that can be seen at every event, making it all happen, but there is one man who puts a great deal of time and effort into making the Summer Concert Series the amazing success it is. Tom Watson has spent the past several
years cultivating the lineup for the series and ensuring a high quality of performances that everyone can enjoy. Tom also emcees the events, and no one can deny that his engaging personality, fabulous sense of humour and silky smooth voice sets the tone for an engaging afternoon. A singer, performer and musician himself, Tom knows what it means to entertain. The purpose of the Peninsula Celebrations Society is to promote and attract local, regional and national attention to the Saanich Peninsula and to provide citizens with events they can participate and take pride in. PCS offers individuals and organizations opportunities to display their talents, abilities and wares through festival, cultural and family related events. The PCS would like to take this opportunity to thank Tom for contributing to this mandate and for his commitment to bringing music to the community. This year’s Summer Sounds kicks off on July 8th with The Midnights. Please visit www.peninsulacelebrations. ca for a full listing of the concerts. There will be loads of surprises this year, with giveaways and promotions from Epicure and other participating sponsors. Join your fellow Island residents at the Beacon Pavilion for Sunday afternoons filled with sunshine, toe tapping and dancing. Life on the Peninsula doesn’t get much better! Submitted by Lisa Makar.

Capturing the Light “Capturing the light” – that’s like saying paint the air. You can’t put it in a container, and you can’t see it. So how do painters do it? Artists re-created the world as colours that suggest light and form. Paintings may appear unfinished, as did the paintings of Monet (pictured), Pissarro and others. Painting from life challenges artists’ every sensory nerve by absorbing the information in front of them, from sight to atmospheric temperature, and channeling feelings from head to hand – recreating their impression in paints on paper or canvas. The eye physically registers light on forms, therefore form is subject to lighting conditions. And where better to capture “real” light than in the outdoors? Sidney Plein Air Paintout celebrates its 10-year anniversary this August. This is a call to artists and art lovers to come down to Beacon Park (at the end of Beacon Avenue) on August 4th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All levels of artists are invited to participate in the muchanticipated painting event while the public cheers them

on. Most of the artists have been coming to Sidney to paint for the past nine years from all over the Island and at times from as far away as Calgary and San Diego. Mark your calendar, whether you are an artist or a spectator who loves art. Artists will be painting from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. along Beacon and the waterfront. There will be an awards ceremony at 2:30 p.m. and a fine art exhibition/sale in the bandstand till 4 p.m. Art exhibition and sale will continue in the Mary Winspear Centre (2243 Beacon Avenue) until August 22nd. Visit the Odette Laroche Gallery at #203 - 2527 Beacon Avenue and view the new paintings, see art in progress or take lessons. Artists: For paint out information and entry forms, call Odette Laroche at 250-6558278 or visit www.odettelarochegallery.com. Sponsors of the Sidney Plein Air Paint Out 2012: Odette LaRoche, gallery organizer and host; Community Arts Council Saanich Peninsula; Island Blue Art Store; Salvador Davis and Co; and the Sidney Pier Hotel & Spa. Juror is Grant Fuller, an artist and teacher from Comox. Submitted by Odette Laroche.
