I've long been interested in why people believe weird things, especially health quackery. There's a long, sad history of people dreaming up worthless therapies that soak up precious time and money, and some of those dreamers are among the most respectable thinkers of their day. Let's learn from the past!

When I was asked if I would agree to be featured for "In Fashion," I was initially going to say no! But then I realized that it was really about being in our community and the opportunity to share some fun facts. It was a cold and windy day when we did the photo shoot; thank goodness for my firm hair gel!

Wintertime here on the West Coast can be dark, wet and dreary. No better time than now to get cozy and hunker in at home. Creating warm cozy spaces to gather in with friends and family can make these long winter months a time to reset, relax and enjoy in comfort.

MEIGHAN MASSEY PAGE 11 As a police officer for the past 19 years, I have watched fraud offences grow and evolve into one of the most treacherous threats facing our communities today. Now almost everyone I speak to has a story about themselves, a friend or a family member who has been the victim of a fraudster.

BOB ORCHARD PAGE 59 I've always loved travelling and photography. Madagascar had been on my list for a while and I wanted to see the lemurs and chameleons. To date I've visited 78 countries. My goal is to visit 100, which would entitle me to join the Century Club. My next trip is to Antarctica.

JOAN SAUNDERS PAGE 36 The kitchen is the centre of our home. Writing about it is somehow both easy and difficult as there are many memories associated with this space. It's where we make and maintain connections through the food we cook and, for me, it's the site of countless cooking triumphs and tribulations.

WORD

We’re not just about to enter a new year, we’re headed into a whole new decade. The sound of 2020 feels a little surreal to me for some reason. I’ve just returned from a beautiful trip to my other favourite island, Hawaii. This trip not only gave me time to de-stress and relax, it suddenly and unexpectedly made me pause and think: "What do I want to do when I grow up?" At the same time I think to myself: What do you mean; I’m having the time of my life! For as long as I can remember, this question has emerged at the most random of times: at family reunions, in our classrooms, from complete strangers. And now this query that has never failed to elicit bouts of anxiety within all of us (and I feel for my children at their tender teenage years) has abruptly struck a chord with me. Is it the entrepreneur in me, always striving to create fresh opportunities and challenges? Or is it the need to create more fulfilling ways to help

Sue

make a difference in our community toward a better tomorrow? I think all goals, business or personal, require creativity – and not just a little but a lot – to survive. As an entrepreneur I give a lot of credit to creativity. So, am I anxious for a new idea or is my entrepreneurial creativity being tested? I guess this is the story of life. It’s incredibly complex and there’s lots going on in the environment of our lives at all times. When you think about it, a life story is written in chalk not ink and it can be changed. We are both the narrator and the main character of our story. We are in charge. What I do know is this: I’m incredibly grateful to be able to produce Seaside Magazine with my team every month, and with my children and friends by my side. But this year, I will embark on something new, something inspiring. I guess you’ll just have to wait and find out! So go and create your own life story for 2020 and live it with absolutely no regrets! SUE HODGSON

Keeping Yourself Safe from Fraudsters by Cst. Meighan Massey Sidney North Saanich RCMP

Frauds can originate

from many different areas of your life, from the stranger knocking on the door to offer cheap trades work; a grandchild borrowing your debit card; a caller offering a fabulous deal that's too good to share with anyone else; or a few new charges on your credit card that you did not incur. Here in our community we have a large demographic from what is considered the "greatest generation:" people who remember when your word was your bond and a handshake meant something. Unfortunately, this also means that this is a target-rich environment for people looking to take advantage of that integrity and trust. To reduce your risk of becoming a victim of fraud, keep the following tips in mind: • Keep your personal and banking information safe. Store it in a secure place and try to "In our community we have ensure that all a large demographic of incoming money people who remember when is done via direct deposit to reduce your word was your bond. the chances of Unfortunately, that makes this a cheque being a target-rich environment stolen from your for fraudsters." mailbox. • Do not share any information such as a credit card or Social Insurance number over the phone unless YOU initiated the call. • Never do anyone a "favour" which involves moving money in and out of your bank account. • Place a flag on your profile with Equifax and TransUnion to ensure that any new credit applications in your name result in a call being made to you directly, ensuring you are the actual applicant. • If the offer seems too good to be true, IT IS. Be suspicious; ask questions. Don't be rushed into a decision. Take the time to research the company offering you such a good deal. Check the Better Business Bureau. Google them. Talk to someone you trust. • If anything must remain secret then it is a fraud. This is an isolation technique. No business passes up free positive advertising. • All charities must be registered under the Income Tax Act; ask for their registration number.

• No legitimate business or government agency takes payment in the form of Apple iTunes cards or Google Play cards. • Do not allow manners to get in the way. It's OK to tell the person at your door "no thank you" and then close the door. It's okay to hang up the phone on a pushy person who won't stop trying to build rapport with you. There is nothing to be embarrassed about if you have fallen victim to a fraudulent scheme. Please remember that talking you out of your money is their job. If you think you have been the victim of a fraud please contact your bank and let them know so they can put safeguards in place to protect your money. Then report the incident to the Sidney North Saanich RMCP at 250-656-3931.

Were you on the Naughty List for not doing your Will?

The Peninsula’s Financial Experts There is no time like the present to get a handle on your personal finances. Regardless of your age or income, there are many ways that good financial planning can benefit you, both in the short term and the long term. Statistics show that many Canadians are living with increasing levels of debt, and without a clear financial action plan. If you don’t have all the answers at your fingertips, your first step towards a more secure future should be to take advice from an expert. Professionals will work with you to maximize the assets you have, and could reduce your debt in the long term.

Seaside Magazine is pleased to present a selection of the qualified professionals located on the Saanich Peninsula who are available to help you.

"[Canadian] household debt is around 170 percent of disposable income. In other words, the average Canadian owes about $1.70 for every dollar of income he or she earns per year, after taxes. That ratio is a Canadian record, and up from about 100 percent 20 years ago." #101 - 9830 Second Street, Sidney 250.656.3951 | www.salvador-davis.com 12 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | JANUARY 2020

A Champagne Holiday on a Beer Budget by Doreen Marion Gee

You do not have to be

rich to enjoy a fun-filled holiday. Having a tight budget doesn't exclude you from enjoying a relaxing getaway to replenish your spirit. With a dose of ingenuity and creativity, even seniors on a low income can treat themselves to a beautiful vacation and memories to treasure. In my experience, enjoying a vacation is all about the "wow factor" – a sense of thrill and wonder – not the price tag. The most blissful holiday of my life was a two-week camping fun-fest beside Sooke River with my family when I was a child. That trip even trumps expensive escapades as an adult to Las Vegas, Salt Lake City and San Francisco. At the age of 19, I rode a bicycle across Canada with my then-husband. The heart-stopping and extraordinary experiences on that one-of-a-kind adventure cost peanuts but were life changing. Sometimes it just takes a change of attitude and some good old-fashioned know-how to savour a budget escape from reality. When Paris is out of reach, think "Vancouver," an equally dazzling destination close to home. Every time I visit that city, it's a new journey of discovery. Cutting the costs of the two most expensive parts of the trip – transportation and accommodation – leaves more cash to spend on shows, attractions, cultural events and restaurants. As a foot passenger, I eliminate the exorbitant cost of taking a car on the ferry, plus, Mondays through Thursdays, I can ride BC Ferries for free as one of the 65+ crowd. There are huge savings on gas and parking without a car. Anyway, it's cheaper and far more fun to ride the Canada Line, the super-charged underground rocket, into

How do you ensure a quality Moving Experience?

Vancouver, and enjoy a very walkable city complete with stunning panoramas of mountains and ocean waves. A few years ago, I used my savings from cheaper travel and accommodation to spend one magical day on Grouse Mountain. My Christmas excitement was sealed by an exciting ride through falling snow on a gondola up the mountain, a sleigh ride through snowdrifts at the top, and a movie in the "Sky Theatre." Many Vancouver hotels are inaccessible for the budget traveller, but I have found excellent lower-cost accommodation at Bed & Breakfast establishments. My advice to cash-challenged travellers is to surf the internet for amazing cost-saving deals. On one trip to Vancouver, I found a lesserknown but exceptional charter bus service online that swept me up to Whistler at the unbelievable price of $35 for a return trip, saving me hundreds of dollars off the ticket price of a major bus company. The extra cash went to a scrumptious lunch and cider in Whistler Village, where tours, hiking and million-dollar views of the Rocky Mountains are free. An internet search will also yield great restaurant offers and discounts. Many places offer online coupons and even a free meal if you sign up for their rewards program. It is always possible to find "champagne" excursions at "beer" prices. With some footwork, I discovered a tiny ferry at Granville Island that chauffeured me around a world-class waterfront for only $10! Seniors' discounts are available everywhere, including at many hotels and attractions. So, dear seniors, treat yourselves to a fun-filled champagne holiday – minus the expensive price tag!

Dressing Your Age: Who Made These Rules?

by Shai Thompson House of Lily Koi

There was a time when

age-related fashion dictated the choices we made in our wardrobe. What I now call our original influencers – mothers, grandmothers and teachers – all took a turn drilling into our heads their traditional way of what is "age-appropriate" dressing. No disrespect, but I am about to de-funk that way of thinking. Here is the deal … all day long I hear women saying what they can't wear. My question is always "why do you feel that way?" You want to know what the common response is? "It's what I was taught,'" or "I have nowhere to wear this dress." I had a client recently come into my store looking for a holiday pantsuit, saying that she looks awful in dresses. A few questions in, she finally revealed that her mother told her to never wear dresses

because they weren't becoming on her. WHAT? So, I put her in a dress, turned her around and boom, magic, tears, and guess what? She looked killer in the dress! Our influencers aren't always right and sometimes stagnate the growth of others' creative presentation. OK, so it's time to unlearn a few out-of-date guidelines, my beautiful people. Let's start by looking back at some of those influencer rules. It has been suggested that after a certain age you need to cut your hair short. Back in the day it was considered a nonverbal way of projecting that you no longer need your long hair to feel or look sexy. You're married; you have children; you need to keep your house in order … that was a traditional way of thinking. These days we are seeing more and more women growing their long gray locks and they are rocking this look of independence. Remember: sexy does not have an age cap! And the gray-haired babe that punks and funks up her 'do is celebrating the rebel that still is alive and well … love that look! Another rule was that makeup after a certain age should only be a light lipstick and a little blush. I think that too much makeup on anyone, at any age, can reflect poorly, adding age to a person if not applied with skill. There is help at the cosmetic counter; let them try a new fresh look on you. Remember we do not want to look like Sweet Baby Jane – we want to accentuate the positive! So many hot-bodied 50+ babes are hiding what they work so hard to preserve. They want to cover their arms because that is what they were taught. Meanwhile, they have guns that would put 20-somethings to shame. The beauty of who you are is a lifetime discovery and being authentic to yourself is powerful. I dare you to try yourself on for size.

Humour, Heart and Innovation by Jesse Holth

This year, Art Finlayson and Silvia

Bonet will celebrate their 20th year of providing architectural and community services to the Saanich Peninsula, Greater Victoria and Vancouver Island. Finlayson Architecture has been operating in Victoria since 1989, and became Finlayson Bonet Architecture (FBA) in 2010 after

Silvia became a partner. Art and Silvia have a balance of diverse project experience that they bring to every commission. "Our philosophy is to provide a holistic approach to the design process and to promote a healthy environment for all residences," says Silvia. She describes FBA as an enthusiastic team – they eat lunch together every day, and have fun

participating in many charity events like Sidney's annual Bed Races. "We strive to foster strong relationships between residents and their neighbourhood, promoting connections between people and place." Embracing the community is essential to their philosophy. "Giving back to the community is an important part of what we do," explains Silvia. Both Silvia and Art are involved in a number of nonprofits, including Sidney By The Sea Rotary and Saanich Historical Artifacts Society. "We live, work and play on the Peninsula and are sympathetic to the growth and challenges of this area and Greater Victoria," Silvia continues. Art has received many awards, including the Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce's Lifetime Achievement Award and Seaside Magazine's own Community Award. Finlayson Bonet Architecture has been part of many local projects on the Peninsula. In 2019, they were presented with three Commercial Building Awards from the Victoria Real Estate Board: Award of Excellence for the historic Verdier House in Brentwood Bay; Award of Excellence for the renovation of Brentwood Crossing; and Award of Merit for Island Views Condominiums. They also won Best Townhouse and Project of the Year (Multi-Family) from the CARE Awards, with McLaren Properties, for Seahaven in Sidney. The firm's success comes from their approach to each design challenge. "First, we need to understand the 'why'," says Silvia. "This allows us to fully understand the client's needs – then, we can address the 'how.' It's this stage of the process that usually reveals the 'what' – what are the guiding principles, theme and concepts?"

She explains that architecture is not just one great idea: it's the result of collaborating with clients, municipalities, the community, and the construction team. "The work is the result of a team effort – architecture is not something that happens in isolation." Two exciting projects for FBA will be coming to Sidney soon. The first is the Cameo, at 9844 Third Street, which will house the new Star Cinema, commercial spaces, and five storeys of residential units. The architectural style is described as sleek and modern, while still respecting Sidney's original flair. "The Star Cinema is, of course, the 'star' of the project," says Silvia, "with three new and improved theatres." Casman Properties, the developer for this building, will begin construction in the coming months. The second project is The Beacon on Beacon, at 2432 Beacon Avenue. This five-storey building will house 30 condominium units and two commercial units. The design is sympathetic to a small-town atmosphere by gradually stepping back from Beacon and Fourth Street, as the building increases in height. The architectural style fits in perfectly with "Sidney by the Sea" as it will be reminiscent of a ship. After 20 years of working together, Art and Silvia are looking to the future. Whether it's commercial, residential or multi-family dwellings, the FBA team puts their heart into each project, and their own unique spin. "Architecture is a fun profession," laughs Silvia. "There's always a challenge, and always something to solve."

Power Over Dementia by Doreen Marion Gee

If you told the average

senior citizen that dementia is not a part of normal ageing, they would probably question your sanity - a perfectly understandable reaction, considering the constant media barrage of blatant misinformation on the subject. The truth is, most seniors will not experience dementia in their lifetime. Not only has new scientific research completely transformed our knowledge of the brain, it has also debunked many common myths about how it ages. Long considered hapless victims of an inevitable fate, today's seniors have the knowledge and the power to be active agents in determining their own path of cognitive health. According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, dementia is not a specific disease, but an overall term for a set of symptoms that are caused by different disorders that affect the brain, such as Alzheimer's disease; strokes and cardiovascular illness; and Parkinson's disease. The Mayo Clinic states that in all of these causative conditions, dementia results from "damage to or loss of nerve cells and their connections in the brain." The symptoms of dementia, as outlined by the Alzheimer Society, "may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language, which are severe enough to reduce a person's ability to perform everyday activities."

One of the most pervasive myths about getting older is that the ageing process invariably leads to dementia. This is a particularly harmful stereotype that diminishes seniors in the eyes of society, and brain science in the new millennium has proven that assumption to be absolutely false. The World Health Organization (WHO) asserts that "dementia is not a natural or inevitable consequence of ageing." In fact, the Canadian Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) confirms that the prevalence of actual dementia in our senior population is quite small: "Dementia affects about two per cent of Canadians aged 65 to 74." There is nothing "typical" about this medical condition: "Dementia is not a normal part of ageing. It is an abnormal degeneration of the brain." New scientific revelations have revolutionized our knowledge of the ageing brain. Once thought to be a static organ, we now know that the brain is dynamic and constantly evolving. It is still capable of generating new neurons and increasing its mass as we get older. A 2018 study on ageing by Columbia University yielded mind-bending discoveries: "People grow just as many new brain cells in their old age as they do when they're younger, according to new research." In his book, The Brain That Changes Itself, Dr. Norman Doidge uses the term neuroplasticity to describe the ability of the brain to rewire and change itself.

The World Health Organization has positive news for seniors: "The existence of potentially modifiable risk factors means that prevention of dementia is possible through a public health approach." Some risk factors for dementia cannot be changed, such as genetics, but many are adjustable with lifestyle changes. According to WHO: "Several recent studies have shown a relationship between the development of cognitive impairment and dementia with lifestyle-related risk factors, such as physical inactivity, tobacco use, unhealthy diets and harmful use of alcohol. Certain medical conditions are associated with an increased risk of developing dementia, including hypertension, diabetes, and obesity." WHO recommends many lifestyle modifications, including physical activity; smoking cessation; and management of weight, hearing loss, diabetes, and hypertension. The new knowledge that our brain remains capable of changing and evolving as we age provides the basis for scientists to assess how certain risk factors for dementia can be modified, thus reducing the chances of being afflicted by it. By reducing their risk factors for dementia, seniors are powerful agents in determining their own brain health. As well as prevention, WHO states that "the proactive management of modifiable risk factors can delay or slow onset or progression of the disease." Many experts believe that getting regular exercise is a highly effective lifestyle modification in countering dementia. "Strokes and cardiovascular diseases are implicated in over 50% of dementias and their risk can be reduced by maintaining physical activity" (Alzheimer Society of Canada). The U.K.'s Alzheimer's Society concludes that "Of all the lifestyle changes that have been studied, taking regular physical exercise appears to be one of the best things that you can do to reduce your risk of getting dementia." Regular physical activity has a regenerative function: "One reason exercise leads to a happier, healthier brain is because it promotes neurogenesis, or the birth of new brain cells," says Wendy Suzuki in her book, Healthy Brain, Happy Life. To conclude, not only is dementia far from the scourge portrayed in the media, but people have more power over it than previously thought. Seniors do not have to fear the worst. But even more importantly, they can actually take an active part in reducing the odds of the worst happening.

Coast Dental Care:

Creating a Bright New Smile by Paula Kully

With a new year comes new hope and aspirations. Some people make New Year's resolutions like losing weight and getting fit. Or, maybe you are committed to learning something new or changing careers. Whatever the case may be, if you are considering restoring or simply enhancing your smile this new year, Dr. Mitra Hashemi has a few things you should know about cosmetic dentistry. What is restorative or cosmetic dentistry? It is any procedure that makes your smile look better but is not necessary for the health of your

Family & Implant Dentistry

teeth like regular checkups, cleaning or fillings. Cosmetic and restorative dentistry will make the teeth you have look better and in some cases, replace or repair teeth you have lost. In regards to restorative and cosmetic dentistry, what services do you offer? Our dentists offer implants, Invisalign, teeth whitening, crowns and porcelain veneers. What are the most popular procedures amongst clients you see and what do they involve? We offer a few popular options for people

to improve the look of their smile. These are porcelain or composite veneers and ortho treatments. Porcelain veneers are attached to your teeth. They are made of porcelain and are smooth, shiny and bright white. This is what gives a "Hollywood smile." Composite veneers are similar but they are made from translucent resin and are less expensive. Invisalign and braces are both used to straighten misaligned teeth. What about people who have misaligned teeth but are older? Are braces an option?

Nowadays braces and Invisalign are being used by older people as well as young. I have a patient in her early '80s who has decided she wants a new smile. I admire her and she is an example that you are never too old to straighten your teeth. When it comes to teeth straightening, how is Invisalign different than the traditional, metal braces? Classic braces are made of metal brackets that are affixed individually to each tooth. An archwire is connected to the brackets and puts pressure on your teeth. Your dentist periodically adjusts the archwire to slowly move your teeth into place over the course of 18 months to two years. There are now options for clear braces or lingual braces, which are placed behind your teeth. Invisalign is a computer-based system. The dentist creates a 3D image of your teeth and a clear aligner is produced that is worn for a minimum of 22 hours per day. Invisalign

and is covered with a crown. It is modern science and is becoming more routine. However, our first priority is always to restore the original tooth. Most people want their teeth to be bright white. How is this achieved and are there home remedies for whitening teeth between visits to the dentist? The most popular method is teeth whitening products. However, I would not recommend tooth whitening toothpaste as many of them contain an abrasive that can damage the tooth enamel. With toothpaste, you should put a bit on your finger and rub replaced every two weeks and will gently and your fingers together. If it feels rough between gradually shift your teeth into place. Invisalign your fingers it should not be used. Toothpaste has some limitations but it is the preferred should be creamy and smooth. Strips and whitening gel trays do work and option for most adults. What are dental implants and when is will not damage teeth if used properly. This means using them for a short period of time over this type of dental surgery used? Dental implants are practically a false root a few weeks rather than letting the product sit on your teeth for an extended period of time. made of titanium that screws into the bone fits over the teeth and can be removed when eating, brushing or flossing. It is worn for about 12 months depending on how misaligned your teeth are. The aligner is

F R O M T H E K I TC H E N

Back to Basics When you invite people over, where do they always end up? Of course they congregate in the by Joan Saunders kitchen; sometimes they also end up in my way, but I try to be a gracious host. I often make vaguely veiled hints (as I'm generally not subtle at all) like: "Why don't you head into the living room?" Or, "I've got an 18 pound turkey here that's going to end up on the floor if you don't move over." But I appreciate the warmth of a kitchen: the smells, the energy, the vibe that emanates from a space that's used and loved. And, contrary to my rare moments of panic when preparing food for friends and family, I enjoy having people hovering around, taste testing and asking questions about what's happening and what they could do to help. My mom probably won't offer to assist again when she comes to visit as recently I had her sitting for eons at the kitchen counter grating pounds of carrots. Nothing was said at the time but it was clear that she didn't like our grater when I unwrapped a new one on my birthday. Point taken. But our kitchen is the generally floury and sometimes vaguely sticky centre of our home. And in January, now that all the glitter and

glitz has been stored away and the big holiday meals have been consumed, it's fun to explore what's available locally and hunker down on a cold evening to enjoy hearty, simple, flavourful home cooking. What's in season on the Island? Apples, kale, carrots, leeks, onions and parsnips, to name just a few, are at our Farmer's Markets. My new go-to dessert is an Apple Galette (at right). It sounds much fancier than it is (and I do appreciate recipes that make me sound like I know what I'm doing). A galette is a rustic tart. It can be made with any type of fruit but we had in our front garden what was supposed to be a dwarf apple tree. This year it evolved into a great mutant beast packed full of fruit. The branches were loaded down with apples and so I had to deal with them. Thus, the galette. Many galettes, actually ‌ and chutney and applesauce and muffins. My other current go-to

is a Sheet Pan Meal. I didn't even know what they were when I spied the first recipe but now I'm a convert. Marinate some chicken in smoky paprika and garlic, cut up some fresh veggies and fling them onto a foil-lined pan, toss the veggies in olive oil and herbs, add the chicken and throw it in the oven. It all sounds a bit violent, but it works. Beautifully. A friend of mine who's much younger (yes, a selfdescribed millennial) says that when she does cook, this is how it's done. So this month it's back to the basics. Some chicken, some veggies from the farm stand, a simple apple dessert and we're good to go. But please, let me just ask that you try to keep out of the way when I'm hauling things out of the oven. Smoky Sheet Pan Chicken and Veggies (from Smitten Kitchen Every Day by Deb Perelman) 2 pounds skin-on, bone-in chicken thighs or drumsticks (can easily halve or double recipe) 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp white wine vinegar 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 tbsp sweet smoked paprika 1½ tsp salt Combine all ingredients, add chicken to coat and marinate while you prepare veggies (or leave in fridge up to one day). Cut up about three pounds of veggies into about ¾-inch chunks. I used a head of cauliflower, one small head of broccoli, a few potatoes and a red onion, but you can add whatever is in season and what you'd prefer. Add, if you like, ⅔ cup pitted green olives. Heat the oven to 400° and line your 13 x 18 inch sheet pan with foil. Coat pan with 1 tbsp olive oil. Spread the veggies on the pan then use your hands to toss them with 2 tbsp olive oil, 2 tsp thyme and some salt and pepper. Add the chicken in the spaces between the veggies. Cook for 30 minutes, flip veggies around a bit to ensure they're cooking evenly, and then cook for 15 more minutes (until all is cooked through). To finish, cut a few juliennes of red bell pepper and put in a bowl with 1 tbsp white wine vinegar, ½ tsp salt and a pinch of sugar. When the chicken and veggies are cooked, top with the pepper slices and if desired, 2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley. JANUARY 2020 | SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA 37

OFF THE VINE

Winter Wine Exploring in the Cowichan Valley

For many, January is hibernation and recovery. For me, it's recharging the batteries and new learnings. Visiting a winery to experience its story and terroir ticks those boxes; I highly recommend it. As a few stops in Cowichan Valley keep their doors open during this quiet month, why not explore what's becoming a distinct appellation in our Wine Islands region? Ultimately, wine is about geography. Latitude, geological history and human geography (who's making this drop and why?) matter and Cowichan Valley has its own combination of these factors. First Nation Coast Salish for "Warm Land," Cowichan is "coolclimate Mediterranean." This maritime region benefits from the warmest year-round average temperature in Canada, long dry summers and frost-free periods, mild winters, the rainshadow of nearby mountains and moderating local lakes and Salish Sea. Its unique stratified soils come from millions of years in the making: volcanic rock migrating from southern tropics, marine deposits, local tectonics and glacial moves. This is "Baja BC" and a completely different wine region from, say, the Okanagan Valley. The styles of wines you'll find here reflect this: light and crisp, bright and lively, with fresh coastal acidity (and often salinity). Sparkling, whites and rosĂŠs do particularly well, but reds are increasingly on my radar (especially pinot noir). Changing weather and climatic conditions are assisting with that trend. You don't have to trek far to taste local. Tie in a coffee and pretzel stop at True Grain Bakery in Cowichan Bay and your day is sorted.

Averill Creek Vineyard Founded in 2001, Averill Creek is built into the side of Mount Prevost and has modern "gravity flow" winemaking facilities. I like its airy Tasting Room with floor to ceiling windows which showcases its range of wines and vineyard views.

Book a guided winery tour to get a "behind the scenes" look at the crush pad and see where it all happens (and hopefully meet winemaker Brent Rowland). Burgundian in ethos, he's also producing low intervention "field blends" under their Joue label and plans to deepen the pinot noir program. Watch this space. Some recent favourites: Prosecco-style Charme de L'ile, 2018 Pinot Grigio, Joue Blanc Field Blend, 2014 Somenos Series Pinot Noir. 6552 North Road, Duncan. www.averillcreek.ca; 250-709-9986.

Unsworth Vineyards Unsworth Vineyards (pictured above) has been a leader in showing what this region can produce in terms of high quality coastal wines. I like how both "mainstream" grapes and lesser-known hardy, hybrid varieties which thrive on the Island have been strongly introduced through the portfolio. Inspired by the potential, Tim Turyk (with wife Colleen) bought the winery in 2009 and named it after his late mum Marjorie Unsworth (a long-time Shawnigan Lake summer local). Sustainable farming practices and artisanal winemaking are at the heart of this family business. In addition to the cozy Tasting Room, Unsworth Restaurant (located in a restored 1900's farmhouse) welcomes you to taste their drops with a "farm to table" menu packed with local ingredients. I can't think of a better way to embrace a sense of place than to eat it and sip it, while looking out across it. Some recent favourites: 2018 Sauvignette, 2018 RosĂŠ, 2017 Pinot Noir. 2915 Cameron Taggart Road #1, Mill Bay. www. unsworthvineyards.com; 250-929-2292. Note: As early winter months see reduced hours, it's a good idea to call wineries ahead and confirm opening times. For more info: www.ttwineexplorer or on Instagram @ttwineexplorer. The Centre of Your Experience

What’s Happening at the Mary Winspear Centre

Valdy Canadian folk icon Valdy returns to the Charlie White Theatre for his annual solo performance on Friday, January 10. Paul “Valdy” Horsdal has been part of the fabric of Canadian pop, country and folk music for over 40 years. Combining the art of storytelling and music, Valdy captures life’s most special moments with warmth and magic. Playing around 200 shows a year for 4 decades, performing live is still enjoyable to the long-time Salt Spring Island resident. Valdy is an energetic performer, famous for jigging and dancing on stage, and establishing rapport with young and adult audiences alike. To date he has 14 albums, 22 singles, and four gold records, and has sold nearly half a million units worldwide. Famous for the hit ‘Play Me a Rock ‘n’ Roll Song’, Valdy toured the world several times over. He also has won two Juno Awards for Folk Singer of the Year and Folk Entertainer of the Year, along with seven additional Juno nominations. He was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005, and the Victoria Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in ‘08, something he says is an honour, if not somewhat perplexing. “As a folksinger, I play it all. I was inducted into the Victoria R’n’R Hall of Fame, but I’m still a folk-singer, thus cover ALL styles of

music,” he commented. In June 2012, he received the Order of Canada for his lifelong dedication and achievements in the world of music, as well as his humanitarian, philanthropic, and social work. Playing crowd favourites, even a few surprises, an evening with folk icon Valdy will entertain those both young and young at heart.

Local Heroes Deep Cove Folk is delighted to present “Local Heroes” in the lovely Charlie White Theatre on Friday, January 17. This show will present three sets of music: one each from locally based bands Beats Workin, Daniel Cook and The Radiators and culminating with West My Friend. Each group has fine musicianship and a great selection of material including originals. The evening will be full of fun and fine, locally based music. Beats Workin is an acoustic Swing, Roots and Jump Blues trio, based in Victoria, BC. Playing and singing material ranging from their own energetic original songs and instrumentals, right down through music of the 1940s and beyond, they keep the beat workin on Acoustic and Archtop Guitars, Upright Bass and 6 & 8 string Lap Steel Guitars. Daniel Cook & The Radiators is an original West Coast roots group from Victoria.

They’ll have you stomping your feet and singing a long. With Robert Cromwell’s solid grooves, Ryan Rock’s funk-driven bass, Norm MacPherson’s magical lead guitar, the multiinstrument juggling of Sam Torrance, and Daniel Cook’s well-crafted song writing, these contagious melodies and timeless stories are blended with vocal harmonies into a tasty mix of indie-folk, funk and country. In the modern musical landscape, it’s rare to hear something as put-together as three-piece Cascadian folk outfit West My Friend - something so layered, deeply symphonic, baroque, and mysterious in its own winking way while still courting an edge of disaster. Simple is safe, but complex is fiery, intricate, and ultimately more rewarding. Mingling grassroots guitar, mandolin, accordion, orchestral instruments, and interweaving harmonies, In Constellation features longtime members Eden Oliver, Alex Rempel, and Jeff Poynter conceiving a new box, then thinking outside of it. Punctuating by musings on anxiety and belonging, song structures vary and dynamics change from moment to moment, painting powerful lyrical portraits over backgrounds of violins and trumpets that swell, collapse, and tumble between bold harmonies. With over 650 performances and several tours under their collective belt, West My Friend is bringing forth a new sound you’ve never known you’ve wanted and new meaning to the things you’ve never known you needed.

The Original Wailers Mary Winspear Centre is proud to present The Original Wailers on Thursday, January 30. Prepare yourself for one of the hottest and freshest concert experiences in reggae music today. The Original Wailers will bring you one of the most genuine and energetic shows in the industry, with a perfect mix of musical talent and showmanship. Whether you love the groovy melodies or the stout beats of the Original Wailers, their concert experience will be one that you will remember for the rest of your days.

In 1974 when Bob Marley went solo, on the brink of international stardom, he surprised the music community by choosing an American born lead guitarist, Al Anderson. It was Anderson’s stunning lead work on such classics as No Woman, No Cry, & Three O’clock Road Block, that first alerted rock fans to the Wailer’s music. Andersons’ musical achievements with Bob Marley & The Wailers include the platinum award winning albums, ‘Live at the Lyceum’, ‘Babylon by Bus’ and ten times platinum album ‘Legend’.

INSIDE OUT

Dr. Perkins' Cure Here's news of an exciting medical breakthrough. Some time by Kirsten Emmott ago, Dr. Elisha Perkins, Family Doctor a Yale-trained surgeon who co-founded the Connecticut Medical Society, announced that his studies of muscle contractions had led him to the discovery of subtle electrical fields in the human body. Dr. Perkins used metal rods – one brass and one iron – to influence these fields by drawing the rods down the body of a sick person. Pain, he said, is thereby drawn out. Thousands of grateful patients sent him testimonials, and the "metallic tractors" flooded the market; meanwhile, Perkins became very rich. Care to give it a try? Oops – Perkins announced his sensational ideas in 1797! Even then, his ideas sounded weird. Perkins was thrown out of the medical society he helped start, which branded him "a patentee and user of nostrums." Perkins hastened to New York City (says my source, The Great American Medicine Show by David and Elizabeth Armstrong) during one of the frequent epidemics of yellow fever. The Metallic Tractors failed, however, to protect Perkins or anyone else, and the doctor died of yellow fever in 1799. His son carried on for a while, salting away $50,000, which was a heap of money in the 1790s, and eventually stating that tractors could be made of any old material, including wood. Clearly, they had more to do with suggestion and the placebo effect than electricity.

Now, faith has its place in organizing and supporting the body's innate power to heal. But it's no way to assess a theory, a drug or a course of treatment. History is full of examples of healers who came up with a great idea, only to find that, after all, it was mistaken. All too often people who have serious illness, or chronic illness – especially seniors – fall into the hands of quacks, who may be sincere but poorly informed fringe practitioners, or even respectable physicians. Any treatment that is both effective and safe will quickly lead to plenty of studies in peer-reviewed journals; treatments that don't work will have only testimonials, but when properly studied, are shown to be worthless. Seek out evidence-based medicine, not the latest fads. In 1842 Oliver Wendell Holmes, the poet and obstetrician, wrote a truly hilarious essay on homeopathy (you can find it on the internet) and Holmes has this to say: "I think, after what we have seen of medical facts, as they are represented by incompetent persons, we are disposed to attribute little value to all statements of wonderful cures. Coming from those who have never been accustomed to watch the caprices of disease, and have not cooled down their young enthusiasm by the habit of tranquil observation. … I need not waste time in showing that medical accuracy is not to be looked for in the florid reports of benevolent associations, the assertions of illustrious patrons, the lax effusions of daily journals, or the effervescent gossip of the tea table." Gee, I wish I'd said that.

"big" horse that got shrunk in the wash. They are smaller than ponies, the result of centuries of selective breeding and in general stand between 34 to 38 inches at the wither (the bony structure at the base of the horse's mane). I've seen many dogs that are taller than these tiny equines! They are too small to be ridden, but share the same characteristics and instincts of horses, and can pull a cart, be trained as a service animal, compete in equine agility and many other horse show events. Often they provide companionship for other horses or become family pets, but Lena McMurtry's 11 miniature horses all have a job, whether it's as a show horse, brood mare, driving horse or breeding stud. She has big plans for all her minis, who call Karlena Farms home. Lena grew up on her family's picturesque farm in Central Saanich and began riding around the age five, having inherited her mum's love for horses. By the age of eight she was competing in the sport of reining and when a miniature horse was given to her around the same time, she dove in to the world of miniature horses. Two

years later she purchased another mini, this time with her own money, and she hasn't looked back since. She began by showing her minis in 4H, then branched off into Open shows, attending the Saanich, Cowichan and Nanaimo Fairs, which led to her purchasing her first "show quality" miniature horse from Oregon. That horse "opened the door to show at big sanctioned shows," she says, which are overseen by the American Miniature Horse Association (there's no Canadian version of this association). Competitions include classes in different styles of driving such as Classic or Country, and then several "in hand" classes – where the horse is led by a handler – such as jumping, obstacles, showmanship (which is judged 80% on the handler and 20% on the horse) and halter (where the horse's confirmation is judged). Purchasing a show quality mini can cost anywhere between $2,000 to $5,000 and Lena is no stranger to the world of horse sales. She's been breeding, training and selling her own minis for years now, having purchased her first "stud" mini in 2013. Most of the foals at Karlena Farms are born between March and May and they get to "hang out all summer here on the farm," she says. The foals are then weaned from their mothers over the winter and in the spring she begins their training, usually keeping a few to show and selling any others. In 2015 Lena travelled to compete at the Calgary Stampede, which is the highest level for miniature horse competing in Canada, for the first time. She describes the adventure as being "quite nerve wracking," but she did incredibly well, coming home with seven Championship buckles to add to her collection of ribbons, trophies and buckles.

When Lena is not competing her minis, she's also an original member of the Coastal Cowgirls Drill Team, a sponsored group of six gutsy riders who ride in a set pattern, at speed, to music, similar in some ways to the musical ride. You can see them every year at the Saanich Fair or the Mane Event on the mainland as well as at a handful of other fairs and rodeos. Lena is currently a student at Camosun College and works part time for an equine vet. In her spare time, of

which I can only imagine there's not much of, she looks after her 60 heritage breed chickens. Every year she hatches out close to 400 chicks and raises them to three months when she then sells them. Lena is looking forward to working with her new stud horse Neil (the stallion in the photo) and competing him next show season. "I like where I'm at in the horse department," she says, smiling, "I don't think I could not be in the horse world."

I’m often asked whether investment in Greater Victoria’s rental market is a prudent diversification strategy. Given the current combination of a low vacancy-factor and exceptionally high rents, one might think this is a “sure bet” strategy. However, despite the reliably high rental income and minimal vacancy risk, there is a major issue to consider. The very high capital cost of purchasing rental-only property makes it virtually impossible to obtain a return on capital for many years. Unless the investor can fund a down payment approaching 50% of the purchase price, the odds are high that a major monthly subsidy will be required to cover all expenses. Over the very long term, as rents contribute toward paying down the mortgage and real estate values rise, the investment should prove to have been worthwhile. In the shorter term however, there may be better options. The best and quickest return on capital invested in today’s real estate market is the conversion of unused space in a primary residence to a legal secondary suite. Even should one need to borrow $25,000 on a Line of Credit to effect the necessary renovation, once completed and

rented, the investment is likely to be fully recovered within two years, with the incremental cash flow not only continuing for many years, but also adding significantly to the home’s resale value. Many municipalities now encourage the addition of rental units in single-family dwellings, sometimes even the construction of small stand-alone structures. Of course, the latter will involve a greater capital investment, but the cost will still be recovered more quickly than would be the case with an all-rental property purchase. Before jumping at either approach, one must first confirm zoning and applicable regulations, as well as the tax consequences of turning a personal residence into a partially revenue- generating property. If it is impractical to modify an existing home for partial rental, and you still wish to diversify into real estate, consider investing in a REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT TRUST (REIT) Exchange-Traded fund (ETF). This can provide you with a broad financial stake in shopping centres, apartment and office buildings, and even seniors’ residences. Today, REITs pay dividends of 4 to 5% – an excellent rate in today’s lowinterest environment. Although diversification into real estate may be an excellent strategy, every investor must choose the “best” option for their circumstances, considering all implications before proceeding.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Innovating Out of a Healthcare Crisis There's been a quiet revolution in healthcare on the Saanich Peninsula. It's been needed for many years, and now residents are really starting to feel the benefits. This month I'm heading behind the scenes at Shoreline Medical to see what's been done, and why it matters so much. I've read the dramatic headlines, driven down Bevan Avenue at 8 a.m. on a weekday and seen the Walk-In lineup: I wasn't sure if I'd be arriving to find chaos. In fact, mid-morning, the Sidney Shoreline Medical centre was a scene of calm efficiency. I was taken for a tour of the under-construction, but already much expanded clinic, by Christina Talbot, HR Manager and Liz Beatty, Medical Office Administrator. The first, really unique, fact about Shoreline Medical is that they are operating a completely different model. It's a not-for-profit society that owns and operates the clinics. A volunteer board made up of community members and physicians oversees decision making, ensuring that they strive towards their vision of a network of primary health centres across the Saanich Peninsula. They are collaborative, multidisciplinary centres where family doctors work as part of a team to provide community health care. That vision got a significant boost thanks to funds raised by the Saanich Peninsula Hospital & Healthcare Foundation. They championed the idea that everyone on the Saanich Peninsula should have access to a family doctor. Those donated dollars mean appealing infrastructure for new doctors; a centre that is managed, so doctors do not have to run a business at the same time as treating patients; by Deborah Rogers

Electronic Medical Records; and, most importantly perhaps, the support of a team of other professionals. What does this mean for Peninsula residents? Well, if you have a family doctor, maybe it doesn't mean too much. But if you are one of the estimated 15,000 people here who are not currently registered with a doctor it means help is on its way! Liz and Christina detailed the rapid expansion at Shoreline Medical. In February this year their second Primary Care Centre opened in Brentwood Bay. Renovations in Sidney are continuing but already the expanded space has allowed new doctors to join. There are now 21 family physicians across the two centres. Since opening they've attached over 4,000 patients to a physician, and that process is ongoing as more doctors are recruited. Walk in clinics at the two centres see 27,500 patient visits per year – that will inevitably mean less people waiting at Saan Pen's Emergency Room. What I see as I tour around are bright, clean, newly-equipped rooms, purpose built for the doctors who use them, and the patients that need them. Centralized lab space designed for maximum efficiency. And what I'm hearing is enthusiasm and passion for this vision of how things can be done. Christina stresses that finding the right people, who are on board with Shoreline's different way of operating, is really key for recruitment and retention of staff: "seeing how much these people care is wonderful – I'm proud to be part of the organization for that reason." And even when the phone is ringing off the hook, when there are 15 people waiting for a walk-in appointment, the staff are happy because they know that the whole team is there to support the load, and serve the community. Cascadia:

Sipping in Style by Deborah Rogers

It's an unusual experience packing for a trip that you just can't imagine. I've never been on a cruise, or any sort of boat other than a small sailing dingy (and the BC Ferry of course). I've never really done a holiday with a group, where I'm not the one planning each day's activities. The provided packing list helped as I gathered tidy but cozy clothes, and a whole pile of books, ready for an adventure at sea with a group of strangers. Meeting the Cascadia at Nanaimo was the first in a series of magical moments during my week with Maple Leaf Adventures. She's a 138ft Catamaran, built for tourism on the New Zealand coast and refurbished and put to work on the wild-west coast last year by the Victoria-based ecotourism company. And what a beautiful job they did – even at the end of the season Cascadia looked ship-shape and gleaming in Nanaimo Harbour. With a wide partially-covered sun deck and decks wrapped around the main floor, we could immediately see that our views would be 360° for this trip. Inside, the large state room was all shiny wood and comfortable sofas. Larger than I had guessed for a boat that only has 12 guest cabins. And on

48 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | JANUARY 2020

closer inspection those cabins were comfortable and cozy too. I had plenty of room in mine and a good-sized en suite bathroom too. In contrast to the more remote and rugged trips that Maple Leaf Adventures offers through the season, the trip I was on had a local flavour. It was the inaugural Wines & Islands Cruise, the last week of October, and with glorious blue skies. The sun was streaming onto the decks as we headed out through Dodd Narrows between Gabriola and Mudge Islands. The first sip of "Wine Islands" wine came within the hour: a welcoming toast with some Zanatta bubbles. On board we were fortunate to have a wine expert, Tania, to accompany us on a journey of discovery. Over the course of five days we would learn about and sample wines from 24 different wineries, all based either on Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands or mainland B.C. If that sounds daunting, don't worry: these could just be swirls and sniffs, or tiny sips! Clearly there had been meticulous planning beforehand. The trip was a pleasant balance between time onboard Cascadia relaxing (did I mention the hot tub on the upper deck?), eating (more of that later) and learning about the area we were cruising through; and trips off the boat on the tenders to hike deserted coastlines, explore trails and forests and visit vineyards. Each day saw us explore a different wine region including Salt Spring and Pender Islands, North Saanich and the Cowichan Valley, the Fraser Valley and the Okanagan. Our wine exploration included the stories behind the sips. We learned about the history of the wineries and the story of the land itself - always the starting point for the grape.

Touring wineries, sampling direct from the cask, chatting with the winemakers and seeing the land where the grapes grow all added to the depth of the experience. Every evening we were treated to dinner menus built to pair with the wines. True to their ecotourism remit, the chef on Cascadia presented us with food that was locally sourced, in season and truly, honestly, to die for. Food brings the wine to life, and the meals – shared with the other guests and Tania and Kevin, the Expedition leader – were a chance to celebrate the winemaker's craft. To be honest, for me, it was a bit too much wine. That's no fault of the tour, just a testament to the embarrassment of riches we have in the wine country on our doorstep. But the experience of being on the boat, drifting off to sleep with the gentle slap of waves to the hull, seeing the sun rise over the ocean each morning; that was just priceless. The highlight of the trip? Taking the tender right out to the north of Saturna Island and stepping off on Cabbage Island. Mount Baker was luminous on the horizon, the beach was marked only by seaweed, shells and bird prints. Also, the whales we saw on our last day cruising back. Oh, and also the (sold out) Blanc de Noir Rosé from Sea Star Winery, personally delivered to dinner onboard by proprietor David Goudge. Our new store is tiny but full of all the lovely things we sell. We start the year with our annual sale from December 28 to January 12. Following that, our most important news for you is that we will be closed every Monday. If that is the only day that you can visit us, we will make appointments but as most of our neighbours in the courtyard are closed that day, we hoped you would not mind if we took a day too. We will be open our normal hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays and holidays Once again, this year, thank you everyone for supporting us so wonderfully in all our endeavors, and we wish you all peace, health and happiness in 2020.

Hey kids … are you bored at school? Unhappy with yourself? Feeling left out? Well, don't make any plans just yet to run away and join the circus! For some by Anne Miller of you, the circus has come to you! Middle school students on Salt Spring Island have the privilege of joining the circus right in their own school, if they choose, thanks to the dedicated and enthusiastic leadership of Tiffany Wightman. Putting herself into her job is an understatement for describing this esteemed school counsellor. Tiffany is devoted to understanding and serving her students. While she loves what counselling offers – in fact, she encourages it – she's found a way to gain some of the same positive results without the stigma of counselling: Circus. This idea gestated for some years in Tiffany's mind. Several years ago, she witnessed an aerial act of performers, suspended from high ceilings, doing aerobics. She was viscerally affected. She said: "I could feel my muscles engaging as I watched. I needed to do it!" She began to train, and Tiffany discovered it is a good place to put her excess energy and challenge some caged fears. When climbing the fabric, she is intensively focused on her body because she literally has to hold on for her life. She has learned when to let go and to trust herself and her coaches. Tiffany saw how meaningful this could be to children going through a vulnerable stage of puberty. She witnesses them naturally starting to test family values, trying on different personae and exploring options for independence. Watching them dive into the larger world, she noted they face a lot of competition and pressure to conform, sometimes leading to shaken confidence and unfair comparisons. Serendipity intervened with a visit from members of an Australian secondary school who teach circus with their students. Armed with inspiration from that school, courage, her own research and peer

support, Tiffany approached school administration with the idea of applying this concept with their students. She planned a program around a number of circus skills, some being trapeze, aerial hoop, clowning, juggling, silks and unicycling. She counts her blessings that she was given permission and support in building this unique program with a team of volunteer coaches. Tiffany tells me that admission into the circus program is not based on skill, as that comes with practice, but on a criterion of kindness. Explaining, she noted the tendency during early adolescence for some kids to act superior to another, to bully and to be intolerant. She thinks their power should be in kindness, accepting and celebrating their peers. Kindness has to do with valuing everyone: "no one is better than another." When applied, students naturally embrace this philosophy. There is a parallel between circus and counselling, says Tiffany. She knows that not only does circus offer great

"Tiffany thinks kids' power should be in kindness, accepting and celebrating their peers." exercise, it can be therapeutic. In some ways, it can help the students push past personal barriers. Youth learn to love and accept their bodies, to achieve great feats, to face fears and to work well with peers. The circus program is framed around the 6 P's of circus: 1. Positivity: "You can't do this? Perhaps you can't do it YET." 2. Practice: "You still can't do it? Maybe 10 minutes isn't enough." 3. Persevere: "Keep working through it." 4. Patience: "Be patient with yourself, knowing you can achieve." 5. Pass it on: "We work as a team. When you succeed, pass on what you learned to your peers." 6. Pain: "You'll experience pain, like the burning when you exercise. Tolerate it. You'll get to the other side and feel the euphoria." Tiffany witnesses how taking risks in this way has made these young participants more confident, allowed them to build their skills and characters and has nurtured respect for one another. That's pretty significant. Tiffany is committed. The work is "exhilarating, exhausting and inspiring – and worth every moment to me." JANUARY 2020 | SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA 55

A New Decade, a New Start to Health Time seems to slip by so quickly these days and it becomes more difficult to fit in the hours it takes for self-care. For 2020, by Dr. Kristen Bovee here are my top four things to Peninsula Naturopathic Clinic "commit" to this coming year to Hydrate IV Wellness Centre ensure a healthier decade. Exercise. Not only is exercise the best way to keep your body in shape, it is also important for multiple systems in our body. Exercise ensures cardiovascular health by reducing blood pressure and sending oxygen and nutrients to our cells. It is also one of the most significant ways of reducing stress – people who exercise sleep better and have a more positive attitude. It is arguably nature's best antidepressant. Moving your body encourages lymphatic flow which stimulates the immune system and helps remove waste and toxins from our organs and tissues. You can start with simply walking. One of the best times to walk is shortly after meals as it encourages digestion and metabolism. Take your vitamins. Taking vitamins and supplements may not necessarily change your health by leaps and bounds, but it is important to help fill in our nutritional gaps. Our food these days is generally lower in overall nutrients levels than what we may have seen in our diet decades back. With over-farming, the use of pesticides and herbicides and genetic modification (GMO's), our food is less nutritious and potentially more toxic to our bodies. Taking a comprehensive multivitamin, fish oil, probiotics and vitamin D (especially in the winter) will ensure that the food you enjoy is also balanced with supplements that can fill in these gaps. Practice regular self-care. Self-care has different meanings for different people. Simply put: take time for yourself. Whether that be a regular monthly massage, scheduling a class you always wanted to take or get back into or take time on your own to read a book, it is important to put yourself first on a regular basis to avoid "nurturing burn-out." This will allow you to approach your days with new focus and positivity and is also something you can look forward to each week. Start scheduling an activity each week so that it actually happens. Keep in contact with your friends and family. This one may sound a bit curious but, in our lifestyles, today, we spend too much time using technology and become disconnected from our real world. No, waving hello to your mom on messenger does not count. It is

important to pick up the phone, make that drive or plan a meeting place with friends and family to physically be close and connect. With rising levels of anxiety and depression, it is necessary as social beings that we maintain our traditions and community to gain support of those who love and care for us. I was born in the decade of leaded gasoline; no cell phones or computers (!); McDonald's was considered "eating well" and our parents smoked in the cars as we played unbuckled in the back seats. Our society today is so much different and better in many ways, but we still need to be cognisant of our health and well-being given new dangers and concerns. With a little commitment to the new decade we can certainly go forward and keep improving.

Madagascar! What comes to your mind? Many of us we think of Disney's Madagascar films; I just rewatched the first one and it was hilarious and yes there's lots of lemurs in the movie. My main reason for going to Madagascar was to see the lemurs and chameleons before all the by Bob Orchard forest cover is gone – 90% of it has already disappeared. Madagascar is located about 400 kilometres off the southeast coast of Africa. It is the fourth largest island in the world, measuring approximately 1,114 km long by 444 km wide. It became a separate island about 88 million years ago so the animals evolved in isolation. Lemurs are native only to the island of Madagascar. We started our tour of Madagascar in the Capital city, Antananarivo, called Tana for short. The next day we drove to Marozevo and visited an exotic animal breeding centre. This is where we saw most of the chameleon species of Madagascar. Next stop was the Analamazaotra Reserve to see the largest species of lemur, the indri or babakoto, that can weight up to 9.5 kilograms. Their calls can be heard up to four kilometres away. The park also has 10 other species of lemurs. I soon discovered that walking there was not easy: the paths are covered with roots and there are many uneven steps. What I wasn't expecting on this trip were the very scenic rice

paddies and terracing. In the late afternoon the light reflecting off the rice paddies made for some lovely photos. They plow their fields using Zebu cattle. Unfortunately the roads in Madagascar are in terrible shape, with huge potholes the locals call elephant nests, and numerous smaller ones too. This made for very slow travelling. In addition the airline service is not reliable. Two of our flights were delayed and one of these was cancelled. Because of these logistical nightmares we ended up having to cancel some of our planned excursions. Down south we visited Ranomafana National Park and Isalo National Park to see ring-tailed lemurs and the golden bamboo lemur. We also saw large baobab trees. They can be hundreds of years old and for most of the year, their branches have no leaves so they look like roots, giving them the name upside-down trees. They can grow as high as 25 metres and have a girth up to 44 metres. They also produce a gourd-like fruit that is very high in calcium, vitamin C, iron and potassium. After touring most of the southern part of the Island we flew to the north. Our last two days were spent on the Island of Nosy Be. Here we did some snorkeling. A green sea turtle was spotted by two of the members as well as numerous other colouful varieties of fish. Madagascar is a great place to visit, but don't be expecting four- and five-star hotels except for maybe in the Capital. I'm glad I went now before all the trees are gone. That would most likely be the end of the Lemurs and the other unique species that call Madagascar home.

Questions? Queries?

Let Us Find the Answers for You! Who do you turn to when you have a question? Is it Google or Siri, maybe Alexa? At Seaside Magazine we are fortunate to know local experts in all the fields (or we'll know someone who knows someone), so next time you have a question, Ask Seaside! Each month I'll take your quandaries and queries and do the research for you. Send your questions to news@seasidemagazine.ca. Q: My mother-in-law bought me (yet another) ugly sweater for Christmas. Help! I don't want to hurt her feelings, but I will never wear it, and it seems such a waste. What's the etiquette? Can I ask if she has the receipt and return it? Is there a way to signal that I'd rather she didn't get me anything than another piece of clothing that's just not my style? A: "My mother bought me clothes for years that I would never wear, so I simply stated that if she chose to buy me a gift of any kind, please make it an experience or a perishable. I told her I have more that enough stuff." ~ Shai, House of Lily Koi A: "This year, keep the sweater and find a home for it – surely you know someone who might like it – but gently let your mother-inlaw know that you really like to buy your own clothes. Perhaps you could go shopping together, or suggest that you would love a gift certificate to your favourite shop where you could choose something from her that you would appreciate and wear a lot. I am sure that she goes through all kinds of stress choosing your sweater and would be relieved to be able to leave the choice to you. As long as you continue to accept the ugly sweaters, you will continue to receive them!" ~ Muffet, Muffet & Louisa Q: Lately I see a lot of social media posts from people selling eggs from their farms. These eggs seem to come in a beautiful array of colours – everything from the palest green to rich brown to beige! This is way different than what I buy in the grocery store – where do all the colours come from? A: My good friend Ashley raises her own chickens and ducks. To begin with, she told me that the colour of a bird's eggs is, coincidentally, the same colour as that of their inner ear (or earlobe). White eggs tend to be produced by chickens that have light earlobes, whereas coloured eggs tend to be produced by those with similarly coloured earlobes. The colour and speckling (or lack thereof ) of a bird's eggs come down to genetics. All eggs start off white in the reproductive system, and are then coated in one of two pigments (for either blue/green or red/brown) as they pass through the reproductive tract. Incidentally, coloured eggs are no healthier than white eggs! Q: My favourite pair of tall leather boots have a crack in the sole.

by Lara Gladych

They weren't really expensive but I love them and there's nothing wrong with the leather uppers. Can I get them resoled? Where? And will it end up costing nearly as much as buying a new pair?! A: "The ability and cost to resole your boots will depend upon what the current sole is made of, and you're looking at a minimum of $100. Only about eight out of 10 shoes made these days can be resoled. In order to properly resole them, both boots would have to be done. Whether to have them resoled will be up to you; since you said they weren't an expensive pair, you will have to decide if the cost is worth it. As for where, any quality shoe repair can do that for you. We recommend the shoe repair place in Hillside Mall, and we now have a local shoe repair in Sidney on Third street." ~ Christina, Waterlily Shoes ** Email news@seasidemagazine.ca with a question for Lara and Seaside Magazine and be entered to win the Kuraidori Precision Cooker found on page 9, courtesy of Sidney Home Hardware!

Celebrating Four Years! by Virginia MacLeod

As we roll into 2020, it's

hard to believe the Seaside Magazine Book Club has been going for three years now! Some things change: This year meetings shift to Tuesday evenings and we will meet in the Nell Horth Room (at the library). There will be comfortable seating and plenty of space for all – so feel free to come and join us. Some things stay the same: Deborah's passion for books and reading, delicious refreshments (thanks to the Quince Café), and discovering interesting new books (usually democratically selected by the group through a vote at the end of each meeting). We're still a low commitment book club. Come to meetings when you can, and follow along in the magazine if you are away. What else is new and exciting for 2020? Have you visited the Sidney/ North Saanich Library recently? Do you have a library card? If it's been awhile, there have been some exciting changes: a beautiful renovated space, an amazing array of digital services, a new video game collection, no more fines on children's materials, and board games to use in the library – if you are looking for people to play with, there is a regular Scrabble meet-up on the first and third Monday of each month. We have a vibrant writers group that brings in speakers and runs a monthly support group to help authors develop their writing. We host a monthly afternoon Book Chat. There is storytime on Thursday mornings. Film Fridays will be back for our documentary film lovers. We're getting ready to launch a new program called the "Death Café." The Vancouver Island Immigrant and Refugee Centre Society has been coming to the library to help connect newcomers with services. We have an inspiring Teen Advisory Group of youth, ages 13 to 18, who work on library and community projects. We are also grateful to have the support of Friends of the Library, a volunteer group that raises funds for special projects and makes the library a great place to be. If one of your goals for 2020 is connecting with others and getting involved in our amazing Peninsula community, the library is a great place to start! We're already looking forward to another year of Seaside Magazine Book Club and we hope to see you there. To find out more about what's happening at your library, a great resource is our online event calendar, available online at www.virl. bc.ca. See you in 2020! The January meeting takes place on January 7 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Sidney North Saanich Library. We will be discussing Isabelle Allende's In the Midst of Winter. comfort, warmth, and relaxation." It's a New Year. New goals and fresh starts. But it's still winter. by Tracey Jones Despite any intentions to leave Remarkable Interiors the house, many of our days will inevitably be spent indoors. With that in mind, it's imperative to have plenty of spots to curl up with a cup of tea or hot chocolate and a good book (or let's face it, some good Netflix) With all of this inside time, it's more important than ever to create cozy spaces in our homes. Here are some simple low-cost ways to connect with the art of cozy. The easiest way to make every space in your home better for lounging? Add some pillows and throws. Heavier textiles not only add warmth but snug you in. Weighted blankets and wintery fabrics such as flannel fleece faux fur and textured wools and knits are a musthave, so keep them close by! Having a basket that will hold enough for the whole family instantly says cozy and brings people together. On this note, after the holiday hustle and bright colours it's nice to create a calmer and more neutral space come January. Winter whites,

creams and soft neutrals added in layers with texture help to declutter and calm a space . Lighting is key in any home design but in winter it's even more important. Installing dimmers in all main gathering areas is an instant mood creator. Table and floor lamps on timers set for dark afternoons warm up a space and beckon you into a room. Candles and firelight are what I call comfort light. Who doesn't feel better sitting by a cozy fire or a group of flickering candles (so many battery options now make it safe!) Diffusers offer natural aromatherapy and help humidify the space. Try one with soothing lavender, spicy cinnamon or sweet vanilla to keep the space feeling cozy and warm. Rearranging your furniture layout is a great trick to add in a warmth and coziness to winter gathering. While you may need better walkways to the outside for summertime, winter is a great time to group your seating in tighter (away from the walls), and focus them on conversation and soft focal points (a fireplace or TV/ movie-time). Add in warmth underfoot. This may mean a soft area rug in your reading nook or a runner in a drafty hallway. While summertime is a barefoot world, keeping cozy slippers at the front door in winter ensures you will have comfy warm feet as soon as you come in from outside. Just because everything outside is brown (or wet here on the coast) doesn't mean your house has to look drab inside, too. Bringing home a few easy-to-care-for plants, like succulents, can instantly add vibrancy to your space. Plants (live and faux) are a dĂŠcor staple once again. Danish people have it right with their practice of "Hygge" (pronounced hoo-gah) that is becoming a way of living all over the world. This is definied as "a quality of coziness and comfort that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (a defining characteristic of Danish culture)." Getting through these grey months doesn't have to be so hard (and feel so long!) Why not follow the Danish example and bring more hygge or cozy into your daily life this winter? Sidney & the Peninsula Have Been Discovered: 13 New Multi-Family Developments! by Janice Henshaw

No one can have missed the multi-family housing developments under construction in Sidney and the Peninsula; it seems that the pop of air guns, the ring of hammers and movement of heavy equipment can be heard from almost everywhere. And as with all developments, there are residents who are not happy about it; they would prefer that the lovely small-town feel of Sidney and rural lands of the Peninsula remain undiscovered. They can do just fine without the disruption of construction, view obstructions, road congestion, and all that entails, thank you very much. Long-time Peninsula resident Ingrid Jarisz (Newport Realty SidneyChristie's International) is excited about the changes. "Sidney is changing but for the better in my opinion. We are seeing the Town realize that it needs to diversify and keep pace with how Victoria Core

is growing and changing, but I don't feel it will ever lose its Sidney by the Sea charm and attraction." Ingrid adds that the buyers coming into the market are bringing new energy to the town and the shops. "With prices inching up in the Core, new homeowners are discovering the benefits of Peninsula living and the lifestyle it can offer." Doug Walker, Secretary of the Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, reports that 3,000 people commute for work to Sidney and North Saanich from the western communities and over the Malahat. "There is a lack of local affordable housing in this area and business groups have been working to arrange new developments for several years. We have employers and business opportunities, but we desperately need more housing for workers." Well, it's happening –there are 13 new multi-housing developments!

Marigold Lands is a three-phase condo and townhouse development under construction on eight acres at 7874 Lochside Drive – the previous site of Marigold Nurseries. The master-planned neighbourhood will ultimately consist of 220 to 250 residential units and 4,000 square feet of commercial space. Scott Marchant (Crozier & Marchant/Remax Camosun) reports that Phase One is 95% complete and consists of 38 one- and two-bedroom condominiums including six penthouses in the five-storey building, nine townhouses and eight duplex-style townhomes. 23 condos and two townhomes have been sold. Builders: Campbell Construction and G.T. Mann/ Developer: Tim Hackett & Steve Mann/ Design: KPL James Architects/ Interiors: Kimberly Williams Interior Designs. $425,900 to $809,900. Focus Hair Design: Your Eco-Friendly Salon by Jesse Holth

This is part of a rotating series of articles about some of the Saanich Peninsula's unique shops and services. Clare Wedgwood, owner of Focus Hair Design in Sidney, believes everyone can reduce their environmental impact. When Clare purchased the salon in 2016 with fellow stylist Mahrisa, they renovated the space and became a certified Green Circle Salon. "It is possible to make a difference!" says Clare. Any plastics that are no longer useable are either recycled or repurposed, and any leftover product goes into specific receptacles. What can't be recycled or reused gets disposed of with "clean" incineration, creating steam and ash – amazingly, the steam is used to create power for grids while the ash is used for building materials. Focus Hair Design is practically zero-waste – one of the main by-products at a salon, hair, is also repurposed. "Hair in the landfill creates methane gas," explains Clare. This is why it's so important to keep hair out of the trash bin. So what happens to it? "Hair is one of the best things to mop up oil in oil spills," Clare says. Focus Hair Design also sends leftover hair to a female penitentiary on the mainland, where women are paid to create hair booms. "In our first year, we diverted the equivalent of a dump truck of waste from the landfill – responsibly," adds Clare. They also compost, and have been nominated for the Grant Thornton Green Business of the Year and received the Crystal Award for Green Business of the Year. Clare has been a stylist at Focus Hair Design for sixteen years, and describes it as a fun, friendly atmosphere. "We all love our work and workplace. [We] care about each other and truly feel like a family," says Clare. She has worked with stylist Mark for 16 years, and salon manager Bailey for five years – team members also include Annabelle, Shiori and receptionist Joanne. "We have a passion for teaching as well," Clare says. "A passion that has been passed on to us from Christopher Wootton." She explains that one of her goals is to set up a scholarship or bursary for a student of hairdressing, in honour of Chris Wootton. The services they offer include balayage, highlights and lowlights, updos and braids for special occasions, women's and men's haircuts, perms, wedding hairstyles and more. You can visit this talented, happy and eco-friendly team at #102 - 2527 Beacon Ave in Sidney, Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or call 250-656-8122 to make an appointment.

Panorama Recreation: Engage Them Early On by Jo Barnes

When you look at your preschooler,

do you catch yourself wondering what they'll be when they grow up? Will they be a great musician, athlete, chef or scientist? Whatever tomorrow has in store for your little one, Panorama Recreation's upcoming Early Years Programs can introduce your youngster to a delightful taste of what the future might bring their way. The Early Years Programs have been developed from community feedback, collaborative brainstorming sessions and proposals from staff and contractors all in an effort to reflect community trends, demographics and interests. For details, visit panoramarecreation.ca, phone 250-656-7271, or stop by Panorama Recreation Centre or Greenglade Community Centre in person. Do you have little ones who just can't keep still when the music begins? Little Shakers Music (age three to five) starting January 11 and hosted by Brentwood School of Music, is a wonderful introduction to music and offers a chance for singing, playing musical games and even playing instruments like drums, bells, glockenspiels and shakers. Beginning January 10, Synchro Kids (age four to six), offered by coaches from Victoria Synchro, introduces little ones to basic

swimming and synchro skills in a fun and supportive way. They'll learn how to propel themselves through the water and go upside down. This new exciting program includes 15 minutes on land and 30 minutes in the water. It's hands-on scientific fun all around in Exploratorium: What's the Matter (age three to five) starting February 7. Little ones will have the opportunity to learn about the states of matter and explore cause and effect. They'll be fascinated by fizzy sidewalk chalk and delighted by dancing spaghetti. Come February 25, Sensory Playtime (age two to three) offers a wonderful chance for tiny tots to develop thinking, language, socio-emotional and physical skills. Each session will introduce new sounds and unique materials with which they can discover and have a whole lot of fun in the process. Looking for a "wheel-y" great way to start the week? Mini Movers Mondays (age three to five), starting in May, offers lots of indoor fun on the floor. Kids can bring their scooters, tricycles, bikes or anything on wheels and also have fun with ride on toys, tumbling mats, multi sports equipment and Slider's Tiny Traffic Town. Parents and guardians are welcome to stay and join in the fun or drop off their youngsters and go.

Peninsula Panthers

Wishing all a Happy New Year !

The Peninsula Panthers had an outstanding first half of the season and are looking for more starting January 3rd when they return from their Christmas break with a bang welcoming in their biggest rival, the Victoria Cougars. The two Clubs are in a battle for Regular Season supremacy in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League and fans will not have to wait long to get the pot stirred once again. The Panthers have the League’s most potent line - three players who all played together with the Peninsula Minor Hockey Association and all went on to join the Panthers three seasons past. Josh Lingard plays in the middle for the trio with Tanner Wort and Riley Braun book-ending the most dynamic trio that the Club has ever seen. At the time Seaside went to press, the line ranked one, two and three in overall VIJHL scoring! General Manager Pete Zubersky opined on the three.

“Lingard, Wort and Braun know each other like most people know the back of their own hand and they complement and fit together like a glove,” said the GM. “Lingard can wheel with the best in the League while Wort and Braun know how to put the puck in the net. All three work their tails off every single time out and I have said it many times, they are worth the price of admission. I expect that as we move deeper in the season and into what is hopefully a protracted run in the playoffs, the trio will perform at an even higher level. The three are the stick that stirs the drink for our Hockey Club.” Most players who reach the level of Junior Hockey in the Province have left their own Minor Hockey Association to play Major Midget or with an Academy however the three families decided that playing in their own barn would suffice. It is seldom in the League that three players from one Association play together but it is absolutely unheard of that three from one Association could be the top

scoring trio in the League. Fans on the Peninsula who are not aware of the three might consider venturing out to watch a game. A trio of local kids playing at such a high level and together is an opportunity for fans to attend a game just down the road at the Panorama Recreation Centre. The Cats have played 33 of their 48-game Regular Season and now the real hockey is about to begin. Head Coach Brad Tippett would like nothing more than to go on a winning streak in January and then keep the momentum rolling into February and then the playoffs.

“Coach has done a real nice job with this Club,” said Zubersky. “We have built a group that should be good for not only this current year but also in moving forward. These guys have grown together and have taken a lot of lumps along the way, but we did not waver in our plan to have the best local kids available and to have kids that want to play for the Peninsula Panthers. In addition to the Lingard line, Connor Cheyne, Stefan Grunert, Denver Maloney, Jonah Ragsdale and Logan Speirs all played their Minor Hockey right here on the Peninsula. And a young kid on the Club in Lucas Thomson-Fiddes also lives here after coming in from Toronto a couple of years ago. Having this many kids from our community is unheard of in Junior and we are proud of what we have built. We believe in Community and we walk the walk.” The local squad looks to continue to put up the wins and most likely will be doing just a bit of scoreboard watching as well. But it is safe to say that the games will be more significant from here on in. Pete & Coreen Zubersky, John Wilson and the Panthers Organization wish sponsors, fans, billets and volunteers all the very best in 2020. GORDON LEE PHOTOS

(Left to right) Peninsula Panthers #9 left winger Tanner Wort, #8 centreman Josh Lingard and #10 right winger Riley Braun held down the top three spots in VIJHL scoring midway through December. The three all played their Minor Hockey with the Peninsula Minor Hockey Association and are three-year veterans on the Panthers. They are tearing up the VIJHL and are considered by most to be the best trio in Junior B Hockey on Vancouver Island. They are the most dynamic line to have ever played on the Club and will look to do some damage in the playoffs.

WORD

L AST WO R D

A new year, a new decade no less, gives pause to think about where I'm headed. For children, milestones are recorded as first steps, birthdays, eventually graduation. As adults, career goals or finance-related goals are natural to work towards. And after that? Self improvement perhaps, learning new skills, or visiting new places. Opportunities are everywhere, but the time we have left to take them diminishes. How do you pick your goals? I get more reflective as I get older: thinking about what I've achieved, trying, often failing, not to measure myself against other people. I certainly recognize that it's up to me to effect change in my life. I set myself a goal in November. Totally arbitrary, but I signed up for a running challenge. 30 minutes a day, every day of the month. The incentive was a $50 gift certificate, but of course the reward was in the completion. There were a couple (alright, many) days when I didn't think I'd be able to do it. I got tired. I had early morning or evening commitments that had to be planned around. I had work, family, and a million reasons why I should just give it up. Reader, I completed that challenge! Who cares? I don't need any reward or recognition, I got it all from achieving that (really quite minor) goal. I learned a lot about my resilience: supported wholeheartedly by my family, and by friends who came out in the dark and rain to run with me, telling me over and over that I could do it. What does this mean for you? Keep trying things! Set a new goal every month of the year if you want. Make them big and scary or small and simple. Relish the feeling of working towards something, and of doing it for the simple reward of knowing that you did. For the magazine, our goal is keeping things fresh and always striving to produce content that really matters to you. This January issue is full of changes: we've lost some columns, but only so that we have space for all our new ideas! There are new writers too. Make sure you look closely and then send us your feedback – that's how we know we're doing our job.
