Travelling is one of my favourite activities in life. I used these remedies while travelling through Indonesia in the ’90s and still use them with my family today. One can easily make up a grab and go kit and also have it handy for around the home too!

first word I’ve been thinking a lot about Lara Gladych’s column “Word on the Street” for this Travel Issue. In it, she asks locals “what’s your favorite vacation, ever?” For me, that’s a tough one to answer. As a child growing up in the Maritimes, we didn’t have a lot of money to spare, so we didn’t travel much – just to the U.S. and only as far as Bangor, Maine to shop when our dollar was doing well. Now and again we’d also take a road trip to Montreal to visit family. When I finished University I spent a year in Banff, Alberta and after making some good money, I backpacked across Europe for about six months. I will never forget those days of meeting fellow travellers and visiting the gorgeous and unique countrysides. Now living on the West Coast, Tofino is and will always be one of my most treasured vacation spots, especially when with my kids. It was also the place where we spread my Mom’s ashes, so it will always have mixed, and equally valuable, memories for me. A couple of years ago, I was able to do a few getaways: a short trip with a girlfriend to San Francisco, Hawaii’s Big Island for two weeks and an all-inclusive with the family

to Mexico. I was so lucky to be able to take all of these vacations in a relatively short period, and they each represent special times and relationships for me. As the children have now entered high school, many of my “travels” have simply been travelling from place to place as I chauffeur them to and from sports and jobs. Maybe not as exciting as a vacation, but valuable in their own way as I use the time to catch up with my kids. By the time this issue goes to press, the BC Summer Games will have finished and my jeep will have put on many miles travelling to Nanaimo and back for my daughter’s training. If you haven’t been to that part of the Island for a while, there is lots to discover and be sure to take your bike! There are countless trails and lakes to explore. With my son graduating next year, I hope to take both kids to Spain in August and then, depending on where my 15-year-old daughter ends up for University (she’s hoping for Stanford), I’ll likely be keeping my travels close to where they both reside. For now, I still love to run the trails and roads of the Saanich Peninsula and enjoy travels on my bike discovering new adventures in our own backyard.

Your Favourite Vacation

Seaside Magazine wants to live up to our slogan of being "the voice of the Saanich Peninsula," so, in every issue, we'll be asking people to answer a question. We're looking for responses from all ages and across the diverse neighbourhoods that form our community. Travel. It has a way of evoking so many feelings and pictures in the mind's eye. We recall the experience of our favourite travel destinations through all five senses: how the air smelled; what colours were prevalent; what tastes still linger from the food and drink; perhaps the music of the area or the sounds of nature; and then, what we touched such as the water, sand, machines, monuments and so much more. At the heart of a wonderful travel experience is how we felt, and how we can transport ourselves back to those feelings when we remember. It may have been a sense of connectedness to a place, a particularly exhilarating adventure, or possibly special people we met along the way who were unforgettable. It all comes together to create that glimmer in our eyes when we recall a vacation or destination that will always make us smile. "What was your favourite vacation?" I asked the people who lazed about the front lawn outside the Pier on a beautiful July evening. Many people had to clarify that I meant "ever," because this added a broader layer to the question. I suggested that the truest answer probably lies in whatever trip comes to mind first. "Touring the Middle East," was the first answer I got, and what a wonderful way to start! … everything. Just gorgeous," said Peter and Theresa, 62 and 65. "We went to Italy a couple of months ago. The food was amazing, and we're big history buffs so we did a lot of seeing the sights. It was a great trip." Katie, 22, and Alex, about the same age, laugh that to date it's really their only vacation. Having come up by sailboat from Oregon, Andy, 74, says: "It's probably here! It's great to sail up through the Gulf Islands on to Nanaimo, and then to Desolation Sound." He says they come almost every year. Another reminder to my kids that we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Siblings Megan, 16, and Andrew, 14, agree that their trip to Australia was their best vacation ever. "It was really warm, there was lots to do, and a lot of fun activities." Friends of their moms were part of the draw Down Under. They're on vacation from Alberta as they speak. Monique, 58, shared that visiting Spain, and Barcelona in particular, was her most memorable trip. "It was experiencing the different culture, the food and the wine." Her friend's answer is touching: "I took a vacation to Yellowstone with my family in 1976, and that probably holds some of the most wonderful family memories. Everything I saw was so unexpected but natural." That was Katherine, 55. "That's a tough one … actually, I feel like I'm on vacation every day when I'm here." Karoline, 27, is not vacationing. She moved here from Niagara-on-the-Lake, in Ontario, which is where she grew

up, and is her second favourite place to vacation now that she lives here. "I've travelled a lot, and you know, I think Canada has some incredibly beautiful places and we're incredibly lucky. As much as I love Europe and all those other places, here and [home] are still my favourites." "Here." Another someone who loves this very place! "And Vietnam. I loved the people, the food, the culture, the history, the fantastic architecture and the design of the buildings. They had a really different approach to the way they designed the city so that you get different quarters that look and feel very different depending upon where you move. That was kinda cool, I enjoyed that." This comes from Steven, 44. Accompanying him is Kevin, 26, who loved Norway best. He got on a train in Oslo, and recalls the snow in the mountains and the small houses along the way. "It was pretty great." I approached three girls enjoying the peace of the bandshell. Sophie, 14, loved Europe and the Netherlands, where she was able to meet family; Hawaii tops the list for Aynslie, 14, where the warmth was the main attraction; the British Virgin Islands were most memorable for Julia, 14, who vacationed there for a family reunion. This is a funny coincidence, but two interviewees in a row cited Turks & Caicos as their favourite destination, where the scuba diving and beaches were second to none for both. And finally, for the last couple I spoke with, husband Russell, 63, was enthralled with New York City, while his wife, Vivian, 61, will always remember Paris, "but we love coming here to Sidney."

To me, a good trip requires a plane, train, boat or other mode of transportation I don't use on a regular basis; for me this includes a car. Ideally my destination exposes me to experiences connected to history, culture – architecture, people, museums – and nature or green space. That is the travel trifecta I am seeking. London would do. Toronto fits the bill and that other Sydney has it in spades. But you hardly need to venture that far; hop on a boat and travel out to our nearby Gulf Islands National Park Reserve. Coast Salish people have lived on and around the Gulf Islands for thousands of years. A clam garden – evidence of this cultural history – is found on Russell Island. Indigenous peoples actively tended this intertidal garden. By constructing a rock wall at low tide they altered the slope of the beach and increased the area suitable for their preferred clam species. To view this walled garden, visit during the lowest tides of the year. If you're lucky you may happen upon Parks Canada staff conducting eco-restoration of the site. Signs of other past Russell Island inhabitants are more obvious: a homestead, out buildings and an apple orchard reflect a settlement of Hawaiians in the late 1800s. During the summer months, Mahoi descendants stay onsite and detail their family history to island visitors. Russell Island is accessible by private boat or water taxi. A passenger ferry to Sidney Island departs at the end of Sidney's Beacon Avenue through Labour Day weekend. Expansive stretches of beach (see above pic) and easy forested trails expose the keen explorer to interpretive signs, an array of flora and fauna, ancient Indigenous middens and ruins and remnants of an early 1900s brick factory. Visit

on a Sunday through August 26 and take part in "Sidney Spit Snappy Chats" Parks program. Two of the larger Southern Gulf Islands – Saturna and Pender – feature parcels of park land and are reached by BC Ferries via Swartz Bay. Saturna Island's East Point swirls with ocean currents resulting in a rich soup feeding many species. Wildlife viewing at this spot is among the best in the region. Friday summer nights at East Point take in the Parks program "Sunset Wildlife Watch." Like the park land on Saturna, Pender Island has mountains, forests and seaside beaches. At Parks Canada's Roesland waterfront site, you'll find the Pender Islands Museum, a quaint museum run by the Pender Islands Historical Society. On Friday August 10 at 8 p.m., Parks Canada hosts "Bats, Boötes and Bioluminescence" at Roesland. Accommodation for a trip to the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve is inexpensive; stay at home and take day trips or book a campsite nestled in nature. One travel perk is missing: a hip café and exotic foods. Pack water and your favourite picnic foods with you when you go. With access to a private boat or water taxi, more than a dozen islands in the park can be explored (including D'Arcy Island, a former leper colony). Around the World with Sister Cities

What do Anacortes, Washington;

Cairns, Australia; and Niimi, Japan have in common? These three communities are seemingly unrelated, but their commonality is that they are all three sister cities to Sidney. The "sister cities" or "twin towns" initiative began after the second World War in 1947 as a means to foster friendships and understanding between different cultures and countries that were once at war. Sidney's first Sister City Agreement was established in May 1984 with Cairns, Australia. The second was Anacortes, WA in June 1996 followed by Niimi, Japan on July 1, 2008. The Sidney Sister Cities Association (SSCA) oversees and cultivates an ongoing relationship with each sister city. Their focus is to "enrich the cultural and economic resources of each community through the planning and implementation of programs that foster mutual understanding, respect and goodwill." In this regard, Sister Cities has coordinated some fantastic initiatives that have reached far across the ocean and the globe. For instance, in 2014 SSCA sponsored local artist Richard Wong to travel to Cairns as an artist in residence at their unique Tanks Art Centre. The Art Centre is housed in three giant, concrete fuel tanks that were built in 1944 during WWII and used to hold fuel for refuelling Australian, American and British ships up until their decommissioning in 1987. provides a venue for an annual film festival, a market, live music, plays, workshops and more. The Tanks are adjacent to the Cairns Botanic Gardens, Centenary Lakes and Red and Blue Arrow Walking Trails of Mount Whitfield making it a must-see tourist destination. Due to its close proximity and shared location on the Salish Sea, the relationship with Anacortes is particularly strong. One of their key cooperative projects is "Ferry Between Friends" which promotes the importance of the Washington State Ferry link. Sister Cities hosts an annual visit of Anacortes-area politicians, Sister City Association members and friends each spring when the ferry resumes service. Additionally, both communities send delegations to each other's parades in July and December and three years ago the two Sister Cities associations organized an Art Exchange at their respective community art centres. As might be expected, Niimi's sister city association is more formal and closely connected to their municipal government. This was highlighted in 2013 when Sidney Sister Cities sponsored an assistant language teacher to go to Niimii and work in the school system for two years. This provided the association members with a firsthand account of life in Japan. Reciprocal visits have also been hosted throughout the years, and in 2015 Sister Cities President Sharon Stoneman, along with a Sidney delegation, visited Niimi. Sharon explains: "One of our goals at SSCA is to make connections with the people of our sister cities; to share our town and our culture. It has been our experience when visiting our sister cities, whether in

an official capacity or as private citizens, that those connections mean we arrive not as tourists, but as welcome visitors, to be included in the life of the community". The visit to Niimi was an extraordinary experience where delegates met many people and were invited into their homes and businesses. They experienced the history of Niimi through their annual Samurai Parade. This 300-year-old tradition is a recreation of the Samurai who travelled to Edo (now Tokyo) which was the seat of power, to pay respect. In return, they would be allowed to continue to reign over the district. Sidney Sister Cities also undertakes initiatives to participate in the life of our community. This includes producing the annual Sidney calendar, participating in the town parades and running a booth at the Sidney Market. They work on projects with other community groups and have guest speakers from around the Peninsula at their monthly meetings to keep them up to date and connected with what is going on in the community. For the future, Sister Cities is working on a photographic exhibition with all three of their sister cities. It will be a first for the Association and will bring together the cultures and works from all four communities under one roof for the people of Sidney and the Peninsula.

chasing the golden years Increased Travel Options for Seniors Facing Mobility Challenges One lovely aspect of approaching our golden years is the opportunity, and time, we finally have for travelling. Whether your dream is to retire and tour the continent in your new motorhome, or take a luxurious cruise to a distant land, the lure for our travel bucket list is undeniable. Our hope, of course, is that by the time by Shauna Dorko we enter our senior years we still have Owner, Sidney SeniorCare our mobility intact. It can be physically challenging for any of us to walk those endless airport corridors, and/or for negotiating those historically memorable, but precarious, cobblestone streets. The joys of travel should be accessible to all, but can be a real struggle if you are wheelchair-bound, walk with a cane or experience mobility pain of any sort. Fortunately, these days, there are many options and resources available for travellers of all types. There are tour companies that not only specialize in senior travel, but those that also cater to people who have limited mobility. Some examples in both categories are Road Scholar (previously Elderhostel), ElderTreks, Sage Traveling and Accessible Journeys. The majority of "recognized" international cities have been conscientious about increasing accessibility to tourists that have a harder time getting around, offering wheelchair-friendly public transportation and better access to most attractions. Many cities in Europe are not only historically fascinating and breathtakingly beautiful, but also feature wide sidewalks and large, open squares suitable for mobility equipment. Cruising is another great travel option, with less ground to cover overall and everything in close proximity onboard. Cruise ships feature notoriously great service 24/7, with loads of entertainment, educational seminars, wine tasting and other fun activities made accessible to all of their voyagers. With a wide variety of fabulous destinations to explore, cruising may very well be the perfect trip for those less inclined to walk their way through their dream vacation. For those preferring land over sea, train travel might be the most suitable option. Journeying by train covers lots of ground, typically with spectacular scenery and service at your fingertips. Similarly, coach tours allow their passengers to relax and travel in comfort to famed attractions, often with wonderful views along the way. And for those seniors craving adventure and something a little more exotic? Well, the good news is that even remoter destinations are kicking it up a notch to provide more accessibility than ever before to those with difficulty moving around. Luxury safari tours are one great example where there is little walking involved, and where a senior with limited mobility can indulge their inner David Livingstone; adding yet another amazing experience to their bucket list. Summer is upon us! This time for many is for travelling to find relaxation and rest. Whether it's the journey to your destination or the time you are there, maintaining your health is arguably the most important part of your vacation. The following is a list of essential natural items that should be included in your first aid and travel kit for the summer. 1. Tea tree oil (melaleuca alternifolia) is probably one of my favourite essential oils. It is a native tree to Southern Australia, and its properties include: anti fungal, antibacterial, anti itch and antiviral. To be used only topically, it can be applied "neat" (undiluted) to just about any external surface for treating insect bites, scabies, skin fungal or bacterial infections and for applying to cuts and scrapes. 2. Natural sunscreen. The safest mineral sun-blocking ingredient is zinc oxide that works by reflecting the sun's rays instead of being absorbed into our bloodstreams (as chemical sunscreens are). Zinc blocks more UVA rays than titanium dioxide. Be sure to choose a minimum 30 SPF strength. 3. Probiotics. Let's face it: our digestion is never the same on holiday. We tend to eat things we shouldn't and sitting for long travel times results in regularity issues. Probiotics can help in both situations; they will help us process the foods we are eating, keep our bowels regular and improve our immune system. 4. Digestive enzymes. In addition to probiotics, digestive enzymes at meals will help minimize bloating and gas caused by foods that we (over) consume on vacation, making you feel more comfortable. 5. Natural bug spray. If you do get a bite, calamine lotion or tea tree oil will take the itch out.

Always carry a water bottle with you and use natural electrolyte powders added to your water. A natural electrolyte recipe includes: lemon juice, baking soda, honey and calcium/ magnesium liquid. Avoid the artificial colour and flavoured formulas out there. 7. Ginger pastilles. These are excellent for nausea during a long car ride or if you've picked up a stomach bug. 8. Zinc lozenges. Consume up to three 5mg zinc lozenges on a long plane ride to boost the immune system to prevent viral infections.

9. Natural antibacterial wipes. These are great for wiping down your airplane seats and for general use in the car or at a campsite where clean running water may be scarce. 10. Arnica tablets and cream. Arnica is a homeopathic remedy used in any inflammatory condition, including bruising, swelling and injury. After any injury use 30CH or 200CH pellets under the tongue several times per day. Topically use the cream on any swelling but not directly on open skin. Creating a Better Future: Le Coteau Nursery by Doreen Marion Gee

This is part of a rotating series of articles on some of the unique shops and services available on the Saanich Peninsula. It is quite remarkable how the principles and actions of a tree and plant nursery in Saanich model the progressive agenda we should all be following to optimize our health and preserve the environment. Along with all of the other nurseries and farms on the Southern Island, Le Coteau Nursery is showing us the way to a healthy sustainable future and planet. We need to listen. Part of a larger farm in Saanich, Le Coteau Nursery is owned by Robert Harris. His large and successful operation focuses on trees, shrubs and plants that yield edible produce. Robert specializes in fruit trees, offering a dizzying variety of hundreds of different types that produce everything from apples and pears to peaches and apricots. Amongst other items, shoppers will also find quince, persimmon, citrus and nut trees; small fruit-bearing shrubs; vegetable starts; perennials; annuals; and ornamental shrubs and trees. Their "non-GMO" edible products are raised with organic fertilizers and no chemical pesticides. They offer "bareroot" fruit trees, those potted in soil, and multi-grafted varieties that yield different fruits on one tree. Enterprises such as Le Coteau Nursery are helping to solve the problem of food insecurity, where many people cannot afford healthy food. "More people are opting to put in fruit trees and plant vegetables," says Robert. "They want to grow their own produce because it is getting so expensive to buy it." Also: "People care more nowadays about what is in their food." The nutritional value and taste of home-grown food is far superior to that found in super-markets: "It definitely benefits people's health!" Preserving the environment – and the planet – are very important to the nursery owner. Robert derives a lot of satisfaction from knowing that the trees he sells are well-springs of life-giving oxygen and natural repositories of carbon dioxide. Plus, every food-producing tree and bush planted benefits our bee population who, in turn, increase our food supply through pollination. By giving back, the staff of Le Coteau are also community-builders. Last year, they did a "150 fruit-tree giveaway" to celebrate Canada's anniversary. Recently, Robert donated fruit trees to the Newman Farm Orchard, run by the District of Central Saanich and The Farmlands Trust. The harvest from the trees ended up at Our Place, nourishing people who are homeless and on low incomes in Greater Victoria. Every day we are reminded of things that imperil our future. Packing a bag does not

have to be a drag. It's actually very simple when you make your strategic plan by following my "Basic 101" steps to success. It costs money when you don't plan: the last thing you want to do when you land is realize you are without a staple item. Having to scour an unknown city for that specific piece is a drag when you already own it but simply left it at home by mistake. Whether your trip is for pleasure or work related, these rules apply. The bigger your suitcase the more you will bring and the heavier it will be – you want to avoid the extra added fees at bag check in. Random fact: Canada is second in line globally for high cost airport fees. Making your wardrobe plan starts with understanding all your daily actives including travel days. Ten items can be worn with several distinct looks by working the accessories in. Lay everything out, try everything on to make sure it fits and remember you don't have to bring something "just in case." Eliminate that from your packing vocabulary! Your blazers and outerwear should be on the outside of the ball. Vacuum-sealed bags are also a great idea for space-saving packing. I always have my toiletry bag ready to go for carry on. I put this in a clear bag that lives under my sink and is easy to access. I am big on double wrapping to prevent spillage as I move product from my home containers to my travel containers. Should your bag be pulled for a random check, this is what they are usually looking for so give it to them right away and make it easy – putting it on top can avoid a disheveled surprise later. Here is my wardrobe check list for travel: 1) White classic shirt made of wrinkle-free fabric 2) 1 pair of your favourite jeans 3) 1 black cocktail dress that is seasonally appropriate 4) 1 blazer – seasonal 5) 1 outerwear jacket or coat 6) 1 pair of flats – this could be a cool pair of sneakers 7) 1 pair of heels – nude or black 8) Workout clothes / bathing suit 9) Small selection of accessories including scarves 10) Tote and hat. Rosemary Lemonade

Rosemary is a perennial herb that is extremely prolific and will grow in very poor soil; it comes from the Mediterranean. It's such a lovely herb, and pinching off its needlelike foliage releases an intoxicating aroma. The bees love it when it is flowering; depending on the variety it can have blue or white flowers. So versatile, it can be placed in a teapot with hot water to make a tea, or inside of a roasting chicken with salt and pepper for a flavourful meal. I recently made the most incredible sauce for pasta from the garden using a blend of rosemary, thyme, sage, basil, cilantro, fennel and lemon verbena. I put them all in the blender and pulsed them – rather ugly with its dark green colour but oh-so-flavourful! The difference when using fresh herbs over dry is incredible. In the summertime a lot of farmers markets offer fresh herbs; treat yourself to a new way of cooking. I saw a new variety of rosemary in a seed catalogue this spring that is grown primarily for use as a skewer, being thicker than most rosemary, and I placed it on my list for next year. The idea is that you thread your meat and vegetables onto the rosemary skewer, imparting its flavour that way. One of my favorite cookbooks using herbs is The Herbfarm Cookbook by Jerry Traunfeld. Not only does it have the most incredible recipes, but it is a great reference for growing and using a variety of herbs. One of my favourite recipes

is for the Rosemary Lemonade: ½ cup sugar 6 cups water Six 4-inch sprigs of fresh rosemary ½-¾ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice Bring the sugar and 2 cups of water to a boil in a small saucepan. Add the rosemary, cover, and remove from the heat. Let the syrup steep for at least 30 minutes. Strain the syrup into a jug. Stir in ½ cup of lemon juice and the remaining 4 cups water. Taste and add more lemon juice if desired. Refrigerate until thoroughly chilled.

Faire de Camping Vancouver Island is paradise for camping. You can choose between simple and shady provincial campgrounds, and the by Deborah Rogers many private campgrounds ranging in size and facilities. We all have friends who have RVs or tent trailers, but I've never camped in anything other than a tent. This includes many childhood camping holidays in Europe, mainly France, and very many happy trips all over Vancouver Island, Interior B.C. and down into Washington and Oregon. Sometimes on those trips, as I try and stretch out the kinks in my back from another night on the ground, I have campervan envy. Those compact little homes on wheels – neatly equipped with bed, kitchen, table and seating – look like a wonderful upgrade to our basic family tent. For my "Day Out" for our travel issue, I wanted to try renting an RV. There are plenty of places close to home where you could pick up a camper for a week, but it just so happened that I was heading back to Europe this summer – a perfect opportunity for an adventure on four wheels! We arranged our camper rental through Indie Campers, entirely online, and so we waited at the arranged pick-up spot, on the train line outside Paris, with a little trepidation, just in case things didn't turn out to be as we expected. It was a scorching hot day and it had been hard work manoeuvring our pile of bags on and off the train, so we were amused when a camper van turned up and out tumbled a couple with an even bigger pile of luggage! "Good trip?", "Amazing" – they had travelled right across Europe from Paris all the way to Croatia, and were now heading home to Oz. 32 seasidemagazine.ca | august 2018

As with all rental vehicles, it's really important to inspect before you drive away. These vans are rented by drivers from around the world, and they had a few dings and scratches to show for it. We photographed all the marks in the paintwork, and hoped we wouldn't be adding any! Our host gave us a tour of all the gadgets and gizmos. Our van had running water, fridge and a shower, but it was when she showed us how the the front seats rotate and the table folds out that I suddenly got a real burst of excitement! This would be our home for the next three weeks, close quarters true, but with lots of nifty storage spots I knew we would be very comfortable. Here's a top tip: request a GPS navigation unit (with English setting); this takes a lot of the worry out of driving away into a strange land. Things to remember: the different speed limits across Europe, the importance of adding the correct kind of gas (diesel for us), not mixing up the gas cap with the opening to add water to the large storage tank, and, the height of the van. It's

quite a bit taller than a car, and many French supermarkets, parking lots and gas stations have height barriers. Our first destination was a four-and-a-half hour drive to the south, which gave us plenty of time to adjust to the cabin and learn how to work the stereo. The countryside changed as we rolled down the péage (a higher-speed highway where you pay a toll charge), and the temperature gauge on the dash climbed to 34! The French love to camp (faire de camping), and once the schools have finished at the start of July campsites rapidly fill up with families escaping city heat. We prebooked our sites because we knew we wanted to stay on some large family-friendly sites with a swimming pool and bar. If you're a more spontaneous type you could travel around the country with this type of van and stay almost anywhere. You'd be most comfortable with an electric hookup, but you could get by at the most basic of campsites, of which there are thousands. Hot and still a little jet-lagged, we rolled up to our first campsite at six in the evening. Unlike a tent, there's almost no set up with a camper van: just plug in to the hookup, pull out the camp chairs and table from the back, and voilà – ready for a cold drink. There were two double beds in our van, stacked on top of each other, but we had brought a small tent too which the kids were happy to set up for themselves. After dinner as it started to get dark, it was fun to make up the little bed and stash all our belongings in the lockers and compartments. It is cozy, maybe better suited to slightly cooler weather, but we were exhausted and it was no problem to get to sleep. A huge thunderstorm blew through during the night. Lightning, then thunder then torrential rain. I was very grateful for our sturdy machine. A rap at the door brought one of the tent's occupants in to join us too, so we got to try out both the beds in the end! It's wonderful when something that you plan and think about for so long turns out exactly, or even better, than you had ever imagined. If you've always wondered what it's like to camp in an RV, my advice is to give it a try. Sleeping under canvas will never have the same allure now I've tried camping on four wheels. Vive l'adventure!

A Back to School Item Not to Miss

It's that time of the year again! Summer is waning and it's the occasion to prepare your child for the upcoming school year. A typical back to school list usually includes items such as new school supplies and new clothes, but an essential item on that list often gets overlooked: a Comprehensive Eye Examination by a Doctor of Optometry. 61% of Canadian parents mistakenly feel they would know if their child was struggling with their vision. What's more, a child with a visual problem will assume that what they are seeing is normal. Only 14% of Canadian children under the age of six have had an eye exam, yet eyes may be children's most important learning tool! In fact, 25% of children have a vision-related learning difficulty. They face academic, social and athletic barriers in life. Because 80% of all learning during the first 12 years is visually based, children can have a tough time catching up after struggling with the basics of reading and writing. Often, undiagnosed vision problems can cause the reversal of words when writing or copying, skipping or re-reading of lines in a text. Innumerable children in Canada are diagnosed every day with a learning disability when a contributing factor was likely their vision. 43% of children with vision problems can pass a vision screening test. Even if your child has 20/20 vision, they may still require a comprehensive eye exam. The skills needed for successful learning encompass much more than 20/20 vision, which only refers to a child's ability to see clearly in the distance. A comprehensive eye exam looks at more than just sight: it looks at all aspects of a child's vision

function, including how well the eyes focus up close, how well they team up and the overall health of the eyes. 29% of Canadian children aged 11 to 13 need glasses because of myopia (or nearsightedness). This condition occurs when the eyeball doesn't get enough light and elongates, causing far away objects to appear out of focus. Rates of myopia are increasing globally at an alarming rate and are predicted to affect 50% of the world population by 2050. We know that uncorrected myopia can have an impact on a child's schooling and lifestyle. What's not common knowledge is that higher prescriptions of nearsightedness are associated with eye-health related complications that can lead to future vision loss. This is due to that fact that the retina is a thin layer, like wallpaper, that covers the back of the eye and may tear if stretched too far. This is the case in a retinal detachment. The good news is that treatments to slow down the growth of the eye in those who already wear glasses are available! They can include specialized glasses, contact lenses or even medicated eyedrops. These treatments work best in childhood when the eyes are still in their growing phase. That is why the Canadian Association of Optometry recommends bringing your school-age child for a comprehensive eye exam every year. common cents insurance tips to ensure a stress-free vacation Finally, the time has come: your long-awaited summer vacation has arrived. Car filled up? Check. Hotel booked? Check. Snacks for the trip? Check. Insurance? Uhhhh. I get it: insurance isn't exactly top of mind when you're planning by Lorie Zorn your exciting summer getaway, Manager, Insurance Services but it's an important piece that Island Savings Mayfair often goes unchecked and should be included somewhere in the trip planning process. Travel Insurance. Having adequate travel insurance is important whether you're travelling internationally or staying within Canada. Unexpected injury or sickness while travelling can be an incredibly emotional time and by having adequate coverage, you are removing the financial burden should something happen. Many people assume that they are covered through their employer or credit card provider, but I strongly encourage you to find out exactly what is covered through these policies as it may cover you for some things and not others. Quick Tip: Getting travel insurance is a simple risk/reward analysis. How much are you willing to risk and what could you gain with that risk? Do you risk $35 in travel insurance to save $68,800 in medical expenses or do you risk $68,800 to save $35? Home Insurance. Make sure that you understand what is covered under your policy and if there are any requirements if the home is vacant. It is good practise to connect with your broker before you go away so they can explain your policy in detail and let you know if there are any additional steps you should take before you leave. For instance: your policy may require that somebody visit the home every five to seven days to check for potential issues such as leaks or damage. Quick tip: Make the house look "lived-in" while you're away. This could include a neighbour or friend cutting your lawn, grabbing your mail or even parking their car in your driveway. Auto Insurance. If you are driving your vehicle anywhere in Canada and the United States, your Autoplan policy will have you covered. The basic coverage does not include rental vehicles, however, there are additional coverages that can protect you while driving a rental. Quick Tip: Before you leave, make sure to print off your policy or take a photo of it, so you have it for quick reference in case of an accident. If you are unsure of the specifics of your insurance situation always connect with your broker before you go away. Not all insurance policies are the same, and you want to make sure you'll be covered in case of any mishaps. This is part of a rotating series of articles featuring people in business on the Saanich Peninsula. Curves is a fitness centre specifically designed to support and encourage women's health. Created for women of all ages and abilities, Curves is famous for its 30-minute workout. The Sidney location, owned by Carolle Batham since 2010, has members ranging from 16 to 96 years old. "We have a great community of women of all different ages who support each other,"says Batham. She explains that in 30 minutes, you do a warm up, cool down, strength training, cardio and stretching. "Our machines are double positive, which means that you are working the opposing muscles at the same time."This allows what is essentially a 90-minute workout to be boiled down to just 30 minutes. Curves was founded with the intention to create a workout short enough that even busy women could fit it into their schedules. Coaches are there to correct technique, and help the members push themselves while being aware of health or fitness restrictions. Batham also says she is excited to be one of the Curves centres chosen to introduce BioAge. "BioAge is a unique calculation of your body's health age based on a combination of physical, stress, and nutritional evaluations." According to Batham, your chronological age may be 50, for example, but your BioAge could be higher or lower depending on your lifestyle. Batham says they are looking for 20 women to be a part of their 10-week BioAge fitness study, where Curves coaches will help to create a personalized action plan to improve your BioAge. Batham's story is inspiring: she first joined Curves in 2007, after realizing she needed to start taking care of herself. Like so many women, she was overworked and too focused on others. "I was not happy, stressed, [and] obese … I had been [working at] the family daycare 24/7 [and] had been diagnosed with Connective Tissue disease." After closing the daycare and moving to Sidney, Batham joined Curves. "I knew that if I didn't take time for me, [I wouldn't] have energy to be there for my three boys, my husband, my parents and my in-laws." Batham really believes in strength training because her doctor has commented on how well she's been able to keep her Connective Tissue disease stable for the past 10 years. Victoria's Largest Little Airshow This year marks the 17th annual Victoria's Largest Little Airshow, held at Michell Airpark in Central Saanich. Hosted by the Victoria Radio Controlled Modelers Society (VRCMS), this popular summer event is a radio-controlled Airshow with 100% of proceeds being donated to charity. Over the past 16 years the Airshow has raised more than $289,000 for local charities. This much-anticipated Airshow is attended by thousands of spectators who enjoy the non-stop aerial action. Admission is free but donations are encouraged, either at the entrance or by way of raffle tickets, daily 50/50 draws and a concession. The Airshow started as a club scale contest that attracted the attention of passersby. Club members thought an Airshow would be a good way to give back to the community. Victoria's Largest Little Airshow was born and it's grown every year. The first year they raised about $500. The 2017 Airshow raised over $24,000! Corporate sponsors are now eager to donate not only money but big prizes such as trips, TV's and BBQ's to help out their local charities. This year all proceeds from the Airshow will be donated to CFAX Santas Anonymous, one of Greater Victoria's longest running children's charities. Volunteers from Santas Anonymous help out all weekend, running the concession as well as a Kids Zone. In addition to the local club members, pilots and their aircraft come from all over B.C. and from as far away as California and Utah. Aircraft of all shapes and sizes make this Airshow a treat for all ages. From scale models, 3D aerobatics, WWI and WWII demos, turbine jets, helicopters, flying lawnmowers and even the Red Baron battling Snoopy on his doghouse, the crowd is always fascinated. A huge static display is staged at one end of the field where club members get the chance to show off their projects in all stages of the build. There are also flight simulators to try! Victoria's Largest Little Airshow is an event you don't want to miss this summer. Pack up the family, bring your lawnchair and hat and head down to Michell Airpark (on Lochside Drive just south of Island View Road) Parking is free, or ride your bike! Category 12 Brewing on Keating Cross Road has secured a foothold in Central Saanich since it opened in late 2014. They'll be drawing by Phillip Tiicham Muir even more traffic now as they've partnered with Pizzeria Prima Strada to utilize their new lounge license four days a week. Community Updates It Takes a Village

Sidney is moving toward a more progressive way of life, thanks to the Ravens Crossing Cohousing Community. Land was acquired June 29 for a project that's been discussed since early 2016. Now with an ideal site, Ravens Crossing will start work on 30 to 35 creatively designed apartments with extensive common facilities, built to foster strong relationships among neighbours. The Raven's Crossing project will save residents on energy costs and expenses like meals and childcare. A Pet Care Centre That Loves Your Pets as Much as You Do!

dad, are we there yet? As you snuggle down in your first class airplane seat with a glass of red wine in your hand, it is hard to believe the origin of the word "Travel." It actually comes from the Middle English "travailen," meaning to torment or cause pain, based on a Latin torture instrument called a "tripalium" which had three sharp stakes on its end. My by Chris Cowland travel experiences, on the other hand, tend more towards their linguistic roots. Back in England in 1979, I had met a Canadian girl in London, and she persuaded me to marry her and move to Canada. She spread some beautifully coloured postcards across the table, featuring the Rocky Mountains, Lake Louise and Banff National Park. I was blown away, and we were married the following year. I asked her what town we were moving to, and she said she was from Winnipeg, which conjured up snuggly memories of my childhood Winnie the Pooh stuffed toy. At my going away party, one of the accountant partners asked me where I was going, and after choking on his gin and tonic, he relayed to me that he had visited that Canadian office, and in his opinion: "if ever an enema had to be administered unto the world, Christopher, it would be done via Winnipeg." I didn't quite get his meaning until we arrived at Winnipeg Airport on March 8, 1980. I had not brought a coat, and my father in law warned me that it was -32° outside. "No problem, you mean 32°F above, don't you?" With my moustache defrosting in the car, I asked my new wife if we would be driving past those lovely lakes. With a languid wave of her hand towards the West, she said: "They're out that way." Within two months of arriving, the temperature was 80°F (above!). It gets hot in town, so many Winnipeggers own cabins in the nearby lake country, and in those days you could pick up something really nice for about $40,000. We ended up buying 2.5 acres and a small abandoned fishing cabin on an island about five miles from Clearwater Bay in Lake of the Woods. Over the next years, we would spend every summer there with our kids and the pets. The two-hour drive from Winnipeg to the lake was quite pleasant, except for the time when our dog found a skunk just as we were returning home. However, we then moved to Saskatoon, and Toronto two years later, and then Sidney. A 30-hour drive with four kids, two dogs and the cat in a loaded-down station wagon can be a challenge. We learned a lot over the years. You do not feed all the leftovers in the fridge to the dog the night before you leave. Barely off the ferry, the dog began whining, and it practically exploded when I stopped by a patch of grass. Then he ran off to get a drink in a ditch, which had two inches of water on top of a foot of putrid mud. Two hours of skunk scent paled in comparison. And never bring a cat along unless you have a cage with a litter box (don't ask). It has been a long and somewhat tortuous series of travel adventures over the years, but at least I finally got to see Lake Louise!

A few years ago we put a

book on display at the Sidney/ NorthSaanich Library called Islands in the Salish Sea: A Community Atlas compiled by Sheila Harrington and edited by Judi Stevenson. A customer picked it up, and she enjoyed it so much that she went to Tanner's Books and bought herself a copy. She started visiting each island, seeking out the people who created the beautiful community maps she discovered in the book. She met people, got their autographs and sometimes their stories. Not every book you pick up is going to set in motion an epic adventure like this but, you never know; it just might. Lately, I have been eyeing books like The Secret Beaches of Vancouver Island by Theo Dombrowski, Hot Springs of Western Canada by G. J. Woodsworth, the new edition of Hiking the Gulf Islands of British Columbia by Charles Kahn and Ghost Towns of the Pacific Northwest by Philip Varney. There is so much waiting to be explored in our own beautiful backyard! If that still sounds like too much hustle and bustle, why not find a comfy spot and read your way around the world this summer? It's way less expensive, you won't need any special immunizations, no jet lag and you can come home anytime you want (just put down the book). This summer the Vancouver Island Regional Library is encouraging adults to travel and explore through reading. To join the fun you just come into the library and ask about the Adult Summer Reading Challenge. Complete tasks like "read a book by an international author" or "read a book about a place you have never visited" or "attend a local author event." Come back to the library, tell us what you've done and you will be entered into our weekly prize draws. If you need ideas about what to read, we can help with that too. Western medicine is not the only thing; there are other ways to look at what it means to be ill and get better." Mikiala's degree program, Anthropology, is a field of study requiring much research and detailed observations about human beings. "As an anthropologist, you are an observer noting trends, comparing cultures, and what it means to be human. I was interested in the broader more holistic perspective," she shares.

In the world of anthropological study, Mikiala was immersed in objective evaluation and analytical thinking. "When studying, I pictured myself researching, not practising," she says. A post-degree trip to Australia, where she met people involved in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), helped crystallize that first idea about alternative health approaches into a practical career decision. "I was interested in what they were studying. I wanted to work with people and felt the impetus to heal," she says. Mikiala returned to Victoria with renewed clarity and enthusiasm and enrolled at

the Canadian College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (CCAOM). In 2003 she became licensed in acupuncture, and finally completed her studies in 2004. It was also at CCAOM where she met her husband and business partner Jeff Jones. An Exciting Night With Saw-whet Owl Banders

When our family discovered

that Rocky Point Bird Observatory (RPBO) bird banding site at Pedder Bay was open to the public for observation and educational purposes, we could hardly wait to see the night banding of Northern Saw-whet Owls. We weren't disappointed. Arriving in the late afternoon on October 1, 2017, we planned to find the owls in the daytime. I knew spotting the eight-inch-long owls would be difficult, as they are notoriously hard to find. They tend to roost in the thickest part of a tree, and here on the West Coast, where trees are often taller than 100 feet, our chances were slim. Nevertheless, we had done our research and hoped to beat the odds. We were wrong. The sun set fast as we explored another path after a picnic supper. The evening was soon ruled by a nearly full moon that had risen over the treetops. By 8 p.m. we could hear the taped owl call being played at the banding site. Backtracking to the booth area where the data was collected, we arrived in time to see the volunteer's headlamps bob along the trail from the net with the first catches of the night. Although we were warned ahead of time to remain quiet, (an owl's sensitivity to noise is 10 times that of humans), we found it difficult to restrain our enthusiasm at seeing these remarkable birds up close for the first time. The bander-in-charge deftly measured wing length, noted the age, and recorded other characteristics of the bird, while it blinked and winked at us. If undue stress was displayed, the owl was immediately released.

Bird banding is an important means for gathering data for several reasons. Noting the overall health of a bird may reflect the availability of food and the quality of breeding or wintering grounds. When recaptured or found, the banding ID can provide data on longevity and range. In many cases, the age and sex of a bird can only be determined during handling. Also, this species can be under-represented by visual counts alone. Rarely seen on the coast, it was once thought their numbers were low. We saw seven owls between 7:45 and 9 p.m. The volunteer banders remained until 1:30 a.m. In all a record breaking 1,848 owls were banded last fall. During a lull, we learned that southern Vancouver Island is important in the owl's migratory route. Although wintering and breeding grounds are known, the banded owls' range is unclear. In 2014, an owl banded at Pedder Bay was captured and released 18 days later in Boise, Idaho, an astounding 633 miles away. Public viewing of banding at Pedder Bay starts in mid July for the perched birds, and runs daily for 90 days until mid-October, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., weather permitting. The Northern Saw-whet Owl banding runs from mid September until the end of October, from 8 p.m. to midnight. Please gauge the suitability of young children for this opportunity. notable event in the history of any organization, especially if during that period steady progress from a small beginning has been continuous, with every prospect of still further achievements. This can be aptly applied to the North and South Saanich Agricultural Society, which this year celebrates their 150th year of community effort and the oldest continuous agricultural fair west of the Great Lakes. It is a far cry to 1868, which takes us back to the early pioneer days of the Saanich Peninsula. As farming naturally was the chief business on this fertile countryside, it is understandable that some of the pioneer farmers discussed the desirability of having an annual gathering of farmers, residents, and in fact all those interested in the country life of the Peninsula. Ten farmers met, and the foundations of this Society was duly laid, the primary objective being to encourage all the activities of the farm, garden, home and social life. It was at this meeting that the name, under which the Society has been known since its inception, was given, and which is oftentimes shortened to the "Saanich Fair." Today the Society continues to honour our past founders and members by encouraging the community to participate in the 150th Saanich Fair. Our mission for many years has been to promote agriculture into the future. The Fair encourages the community to continue the spirit of friendly competition between neighbours and friends alike by entering your wares, be that jams and jellies, vegetables, fruit, knitting, sewing, livestock, art, photography or treasured relics from the past. These exhibits make for wonderful viewing for all fairgoers young and old. Our focus is a family "a-fair;" every year the fair encourages families to come and enjoy the fairgrounds. Over 3,000 people volunteer their time to put on the three-day exhibition of sights and sounds. This year the headliners are: The Chris Buck Band on Saturday night followed by 54-40 Sunday night. Shoreacres is a quiet little road in Sidney that is easy to miss unless you’re looking for it. But oh what a treasure if you live on it! The oceanside, newly renovated 2,188-square-foot home of Deborah and Philip Dodge has a glorious view of the blue ocean, the glacier-clad Mt. Baker, and an entertaining and close-up view of boats cruising in and out of Sidney Marina. This is what retirement looks like for Philip, a military engineer originally from Hamilton, and his wife Deborah, who hails from Nova Scotia. After living in various cities, Deborah was planning to retire in England, but Philip persuaded her to visit Sidney in February for a look around and luckily it was a lovely enough day to change her mind. Sidney has its exciting winter storms, but they don’t compare to the Dodges’ former residence near Porthleven, Cornwall, which is known as the “most storm-battered town in Britain.” Over the years, four additions had been made to the low-bank waterfront house. Deborah and Philip wanted to achieve a cohesive, casual cottage feel with an open-plan living room, and they shared their ideas with interior designer Andi Hook and her contractor husband, Larry, of Hook and Hook Renovations & Design Inc., who created 2D plans and 3D renderings. Andi said: “I envisioned what the space could look like as soon as I saw the property.” Due to the age of the house, the renovation included an electrical and plumbing upgrade. Perimeter drains were installed to improve the site drainage. All of these changes cut into the budget and Philip describes them as the “unsexy” bits of the renovation. But as TV contractor Mike Holmes often reminds the audience on his show, you can’t have a quality home without looking after these basic issues, or they morph into an ever-expanding “can of worms.” Hook and Hook added 250 square feet of new space to create a laundry room and guest bedroom. They replaced most of the interior and exterior doors and restructured the window wall so that the patio doors would line up with the upper windows. The closets were reconfigured, and, throughout the house, they added funky new lighting and fresh

paint in neutral tones of grey and white. Light floods in from the new windows. Deborah and Philip downsized from a large house before their move to Sidney, so one of their priorities was a new kitchen with a pantry and lots of drawer and cabinet space. Larry built cabinets that have lacquered Frosty White (Benjamin Moore) Shaker-style doors and Corian countertops. He finished the island doors in “Iron Mountain,” a darker contrast colour. The new island provides a convenient extra working space and a seating area that faces the sea. Touches of whimsy from their travels are evident in every room. Adding to it are the kitchen shelves and fireplace mantel, hand carved by Larry out of driftwood found on the beach. Nine mirrors collected from their stay in the U.K. are artfully arranged on the living room end wall. There is a new gas fireplace insert; the red brick chimney has been whitewashed, and the cedar strip ceiling painted white to contrast with the black beams. All the carpeting was removed and replaced throughout the house with greywhite ceramic tiles or engineered wide plank flooring – Kootenay Saw Cut Wire Brushed Oak from Timeless Wood Floors. The media room is backed by a curving wall of windows. White and grey ceramic tiles, a white couch and other accessories offset the dark cabinet and TV. Sliding glass doors at the end of the room open into the master bedroom. The back wall is painted in teal with white trim. The brass-topped white bed, white linens and dresser add to the charm of the room’s beach-inspired theme. Two antique six-paned window/mirrors from France stand up against the wall between the new walk-in closets. The ceiling light is special – Deborah says it was the first purchase they made together as a couple. A sliding barn door opens into the master bathroom which has been expanded by five feet. Space was created by taking out the original laundry room and a built-in bookcase from the family room. Fresh air and light come in through a new remote-controlled skylight. The old bathtub was replaced by a walk-in tiled shower with a rain shower head and body jets. Both the master bathroom and media room have luxurious in-floor heating. One room that wasn’t renovated is the cozy office. It was used as an art studio by the former homeowner, designed by his architect

daughter. Filled with light, it has a lovely angled cedar ceiling, and dabs of paint remain on the orange tiles as a memento to him. There may not be enough room to hang all the couples’ artwork due to the house’s many lovely view windows, but there is a story to tell about each piece they have brought with them, usually purchased on one of their “crazy adventures,” says Deborah. One, in particular, was purchased over lunch at a caravan park in France. The artist showed up during lunch, so Deborah and Philip invited him to have a glass of wine with them. “Three hours later we were all pretty happy, having consumed more than a glass or two and us having purchased one of his pieces. We didn’t really want to buy a painting, but we had such a great time with the artist we did. We speak of that lunch often and always with a smile.” The outside of the house complements the serene cottage beach theme with its combination of Evening Blue HardiePlank lap siding, shake siding and white trimmed windows. The entry and garage door are stained in Sikkens Cetol cedar door finish, adding a rich, warm wood colour. visitor to rest and enjoy the view,” says Katie. Existing heirloom roses and a Japanese maple were integrated into the new landscape and a cutting garden added along the side of the house. Patios are surrounded by lush, low maintenance plantings, and attractive cedar pergolas define the dining and grilling spaces. Katie said they opened up the ocean view “not just for the homeowners, but their neighbours on both sides, giving everyone a wider vista than previously enjoyed.” Sitting around the sunken natural gas fire pit is the perfect place to end the day. “When you plan a renovation and then are left waiting for it to happen, you sometimes lose sight of it, and wonder, is it the right plan?” says Deborah. But now that they are living in their dream space, they are very pleased with the results and feel grateful to their creative and hard-working contractors. “It’s one level living; it’s on the sea, and only a 10-minute walk to town – it’s everything we wanted.” A sign on the entry wall has two lines from a 1907 British music hall song by John A. A Trip Around the World Via Your Garden

I’m a better gardener than globetrotter, which means that I’m not the best person to take travel tips from. Forgoing “Fodor’s,” I’ve instead spent years poring over gardening books and magazines. One of my favourite topics is the early days of botanical exploration and the cultural history of plant species. So instead of travel tips, I’d like to take a quick trip around the world to the birthplaces of some of our most commonly used garden plants. Dahlias (Mexico). Dahlia, the quintessential summer bulb, was hybridized from plants found in the high plains of Mexico over 200 years ago. Due to their popularity with gardeners, they now top in at over 57,000 cultivars. Unfortunately, we’re still missing a truly frost-hardy variety. Hardy Fuchsia (Chile). Almost all species of fuchsia originate from South America and the “parent” species of our most popular hardy hybrids came from Chile and Argentina. A French monk first found fuschia on Haiti and named it after the German herbalist Leonhart Fuchs. Over the years we have changed our pronunciation from what was once “fewk-sia: to the more sonorous version we use today. Heuchera (Ontario). Coral-bells, the perennial whose foliage has long been brightening up our shade gardens, are usually hybridized with the native species found on much of the east coast. From this, we now have a rainbow of heuchera to choose from. I like using a contrasting dark burgundy and a bright, lemony chartreuse together. Calla Lilies (South Africa). Calla lilies are a common water plant that can be found between Malawi and the eastern end of South Africa. Although given the Greek word for beautiful (Calla), they are technically not a lily. It’s not known when they were imported to Europe but there are paintings of them from the 1600s. They are

great in wet areas of the garden but have to be treated with care as they are poisonous. Cistus (Spain). These drought-tolerant shrubs are a common sight on both sides of the Western Mediterranean. They’re rapidly gaining popularity in our area due to their deer resistance, as well as their continual blooming during the summer. The rock roses are a fantastic group of plants and one not to miss. Rhododendron (Nepal). This one would require a bit of a hike into the Himalayas as the national flower of Nepal only grows at elevations over 3,000 feet. In some areas, one can see dozens of species all flowering at the same time. It’s no wonder they

caught a botanist’s eye in the 1660s when they were first imported to Britain. Bottlebrush (Australia). The bottlebrush (or Callistemon) are another group of plants that are rapidly growing in popularity in our area. Their bright fibre-optic like flowers and drought tolerance make them a striking addition to a Mediterranean garden. Grevillia is a similar Australian native that I’d also recommend. One specific event that concludes a member's project is the 4-H auction. It has provided members with an opportunity to sell their project for the past 70 years, helping support the next year's project or post-secondary aspirations. Beacon Avenue and side streets will be closed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and you'll see cars and trucks of all makes, models and vintages – over 300 vehicles in all! The Auto Extravaganza is a classic and special interest Car Show and Shine where every vehicle has a story to tell, most certainly a love story. The time and labour that goes in to showing these cars at their finest is what makes the show so astounding. This car show is also special because it is such a takeover of the town. With the side streets closed off, you have the freedom to walk, wander and explore (and take photos). The atmosphere comes from the music and entertainment and the enthusiasm – owners love to share their treasured vehicles with you so make sure you chat to an owner or two about the story behind their machine. Something you might not expect to see at a car show is a soupedup, street-ready … hospital bed! Yes, you read that right: keep an eye out at the show for an unusual exhibit from the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation, in promotion of the Bed Races on Beacon! Yes, they're back! The 100.3 The Q's Bed Races on Beacon are back on Sunday, August 26! This is sure to be a high-octane, funpacked family event. Watch 14 local teams race hospital beds down Beacon Avenue. There will be costumes, prizes, music, food and fun guaranteed! Come along to watch the races and cheer on your favourite team from 1 to 3 p.m. on Beacon Ave. between Fifth and Third Streets. This is a fundraiser for Sidney's newly-opened Peninsula Youth Clinic. Before the event you'll be able to make an online pledge to your favourite team and on the day there'll be more opportunities for donations. Come and be part of the crowd and cheer on the racers! Beacon Avenue will be closed between Fifth and Third Streets to allow spectators, the judging table and room for a Family Fun Zone and the pit-crew, provided by, who else? the Torque Masters to keep the racing machines in good repair. last word Maybe I was born restless, but I have always loved to travel, taking every opportunity to visit a new city, country or continent. The holidays I took as a child certainly gave me a taste for adventure, though my brother took the same trips and doesn’t care to travel. A lifetime of reading has allowed me to travel to very many places, sometimes stoking a desire to go myself (Jenny Diski’s Skating to Antarctica) and sometimes removing all need (any book set in the Amazon). Travelling is a way to take a break from reality, from routine and from the known. You can step from the plane (or train or bus) into a different world. You might not speak the language, the climate could be completely different, maybe the food is strange. And in those differences is the point of travel for me. Every mundane transaction or interaction becomes a mini adventure. I want to sit and listen to a conversation I can’t

understand, or try a faltering version of a new language myself. I love an endless road trip and the mental space it opens up, just to observe and think and daydream. To me travel doesn’t have to be about exotic or far-flung places; it can be a day trip or weekend. I think the idea of being a tourist in your own backyard is great – why not adopt a traveller’s perspective and examine your home with fresh and curious eyes? Of course travel is also having your bag snatched in Barcelona; ending up with so much rain in your tent you have to buy a new one; feeling scared and alone in a train station at night. Travelling can force you to draw on your deepest resources of bravery, perseverance or patience. It’s where you create your story. It might be a cliché to talk about finding yourself when on a journey, but the places I have been and people I have travelled with and met have definitely shaped me. The list of places I’ll never get to will always be longer than the list of places I’ve been, but hopefully I have at least another 40 years of travel adventures in me. Enough time to get to India and Africa, Italy, Costa Rica and Brazil. Let’s not forget the other important function of travelling: while seeing how things are done in other parts of the world we can reflect on home. And sometimes the sweetest travel feeling of all is stepping in your own front door, dropping your bags, feeling totally secure in familiar surroundings, thankful to live exactly where you do.
