It's not just wild socks anymore, my friend: there's a whole world of choices, some traditional, some modern. Don't be afraid! It's not a race to get old. You don't have to break the envelope, but at the very least push it a little ... and with men's accessories, a little can go a long way! Have fun!

Our country is so vast, so physically expansive and culturally diverse that I was interested to find out from others which places in Canada have made a lasting impression on them; places they feel all Canadians should experience at least once. Find out what locals had to say.

A smaller footprint can lighten the financial and emotional burden of filling our spaces with so much stuff. Have less, do more! WORD

I think because another birthday of mine just rolled around the corner, and seeing my children look so grown up lately, I've been wondering how the world will look for them in another 10 to 20 years. Then I happened to come across an article about the sixth major extinction event and it really had me thinking … OK, I'm only 53, even if it's a bit late in the game, I'm going to give it all I have. Think about this: we hear so much about the extinction of tigers, the loss of rhinos, elephants and polar bears but what if, instead, one day we looked out our window to see 75% fewer birds, squirrels or deer. Earth has experienced five mass extinction events. The first was 445 to 440 million years ago, with 80% of all species lost. The second was about 359 million years ago. The third – and worst – occurred 252 million years ago, with 95% of species wiped off the planet. The fourth was 201 million years ago, and then, the most notable of all was 65

million years ago when an asteroid slammed into Earth, changing its climate dramatically wiping out the dinosaurs. The common thread in all the events is the major changes in the chemistry of the atmosphere, the chemistry of the ocean and particularly the carbon cycle (the key to making Earth capable of sustaining life). We need to get outside and do something! Anything more than merely hoping this doesn't happen again. Survival begins with action. Sweaty, grimy volunteer hours that repair salmon-spawning creeks. Riding bikes to the grocery store. Planting trees for fun. Putting out some rain barrels. Growing our own veggies. I don't really want to eat less meat, and I admit I find it a bit of a chore to recycle. But I'm going to keep trying. I'll go outside and ride and run and hike and experience this incredible natural world as best I can, so I can stay connected to what's most important: our humanity.

Sable Island:

Trip of a Lifetime

Most of my childhood dreams have been horsey in nature and a visit to Sable Island, with its famed herds of hardy wild horses, has been by Cassidy Nunn one of mine. Last fall I had the opportunity to make that dream into a reality and I jumped at the chance, booking my flight from Victoria to Halifax. I signed up with Picture Perfect Tours for a day-trip tour to the 42-kilometre-long crescent shaped Island in the North Atlantic. I packed as much of my camera gear as I could carry and plenty of empty memory cards, ready for my once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Sable Island is one of the furthest offshore islands in Canada and in

2013 it became a National Park Reserve managed by Parks Canada. The Island has been dubbed the "Graveyard of the Atlantic," as over the centuries more than 300 vessels have found their demise, wrecked off the shores as a result of the submerged sand dunes, rough seas and thick fog that often blankets the Island. In 1801 Canada's first lifesaving station was established on Sable Island, although the Island's history with humans dates back much further than that. The wild horses are descendants of domesticated horses that, over the centuries, were left behind and became feral after settlers left the Island. Geordie Mott, owner/operator of Picture Perfect Tours, began these Sable Island photography tours, citing his family connection to the Island as inspiration. During the First World War his grandfather was the super intendent on the Island. Geordie writes: "my grandfather always had Sable memorabilia around his home and [this] inspired my imagination to find a way to get there." We flew to the Island on a charter flight, the day sunny with a bit of wind. Following a safe landing on the sandy beach of Sable Island and a briefing on the rules from Parks Canada staff, our group of seven set off, cameras in tow, in search of wild horses. We spent the day trekking through the sand dunes, careful to follow only the horse paths and not step on any flora and fauna. We kept the designated 20 metres distance from the horses at all times, and it was amazing to see how they weren't afraid of our presence as they continued to graze and move about, occasionally raising their heads to look in our direction. Other wild horses, being flight animals, likely would have turned tail and run, or at least been more suspicious of us with our large lenses and monopods.

Fresh water ponds of varying sizes dotted the landscape, appearing out of the dunes and the salty grasses clinging to life in the sand. The wild horse population varies greatly depending on how harsh the winter has been, and estimates in the past have placed their numbers between 150 and 500. There were many mares with foals by their sides, their thick, almost curly coats preparing for winter already. The stallions' dense manes were tangled from the salty ocean spray – the older ones boasting manes so long they almost touched the ground. The first watering hole we came upon had several herds of horses coming in for fresh water; one stallion created some drama for us as he taunted another stallion before being chased off. I heard the commotion of the two splashing through the pond to my right and I spun my camera around and fired off as many frames as I could in quick succession. About half were out of focus, but one captured their action perfectly. As we headed back for lunch to Main Station, one of the few buildings on the Island, we came across hundreds of grey seals lounging on the shore; some would shuffle off into the water and then promptly turn around and check us out curiously while bobbing in the waves. After our quick re-fuel, we were off to explore again, this time marching in a different direction towards another herd of horses, my memory cards quickly filling up. It was an incredible pinch-me-because-this-can't-be-real kind of a day. We flew off into the sunset and I kept my face pressed against the window, watching Sable Island grow smaller and smaller, as I began scheming for my next trip back, hoping to make it a twice-ina-lifetime experience. Don't Mind the Gap: Lattitude Global Volunteering by Zahida Machan

Like most of her friends, Jane Galloway heard the message loud and clear: if she didn't go right into university after high school, she never would. But instead of heeding that advice, she did something different – what research indicates as a key to success in both university and life, and what more and more young people in Greater Victoria are choosing to do. Jane took a Gap Year right after graduating from Stelly's Secondary School in 2015. "My volunteer placement was in Newcastle, Northern Ireland. I worked as an outdoor instructor, leading activities like climbing, archery and teambuilding exercises." According to the Gap Year Association, research shows that Gap Years – traditionally a year off between high school and university – benefit students in profound ways. This breathing time allows them to figure out who they really are, what they want to do, and how to get there. Once they do go to university, they achieve higher GPAs and quicker degree completion rates. Not all Gap Years are created equal, however. The key to gaining the benefits of a "year off" is to take a "year on" – a Gap Year with intention. This involves volunteering, work, travel or a mix of all three, and doing so with a clear goal in mind and built-in reflection time. Jane did her Gap Year with Lattitude Global Volunteering, a nonprofit organization offering young adults the opportunity to make a positive difference to the lives of others through a challenging and structured international volunteering experience in a culture and community different from their own. Established in 1972, Lattitude

is the longest standing Gap Year program, having sent nearly 50,000 volunteers overseas over its 47-year history. Jane didn't know what she wanted to do with her career, but knew she wanted to attend post-secondary and see the world. "Lattitude seemed like the best possible plan for me – an opportunity to step out on my own as a young adult, experience a new job unlike anything I had done before, and travel. "It also gave me the opportunity to separate myself from everything I had grown up with, people, places and expectations. I knew that to grow into a well-rounded adult, I would have to force myself into a situation where I knew nothing and no one and build myself back up. The thought of all this terrified me but that's how I knew I made the right choice." Reflecting on her experience four years ago, Jane describes herself as being timid as a recent high school graduate, but by the end of her Gap Year experience, she thrived on uncertainty and interacting with new people. "In the span of a year I grew to not only be confident in my choices as a leader but also confident as a person. I had completely come out of my shell." "I recommend that everyone take a Gap Year. You can always learn something more about yourself or about another part of the world. It was one of the best choices I've made and has affected me in a million different ways." Lattitude provides opportunities for young people to travel, live, and volunteer overseas in 15 different countries, for three to 12 months, with departures throughout the year. For more information, please visit www.lattitudecanada.org.

W H AT ' S T H E WO R D?

In Terms of Travel Last time we blazed the word trail in the great outdoors. Today, let's board the phrase train and explore the world of travel. We're packing light. The trip will be simple: no first class flight my friend. After all, we're operating on a shoestring budget. The phrase is thought to originate in the 1800s when early peddlars would sell minor items like small pots or shoelaces to earn a modest sum of money. We're all set, though, and we've definitely got more than shoe laces in our luggage! We could follow a carefully planned itinerary, or would you like to just fly by the seat of your pants? While it might evoke a very funny image in your head, the phrase is actually rooted in aviation history. Early pilots didn't have radios and other instruments and had to rely on their own perceptions and deductions. They had to react to the feel of the plane and often they sensed that feeling in their own backside! Like old-time pilots, let's be observant, see what unfolds and improvise as we go. Be aware of the signs and gate numbers. Don't forget to have your passport and boarding pass ready. That's the ticket! If you're slightly confused, what I meant is that there are rules to be followed. The word "ticket" in the phrase is from the French "etiquette" meaning the correct thing to do. It's based on the book outlining the rules of correct behaviour in the Court. So show your boarding pass, but you'll still need your ticket. You know, there's nothing quite like travelling. I don't know about you but I've had itchy feet lately! Don't get out the foot powder quite yet. The phrase dates back to the 1900s, to a common superstition that suggests when your feet itch it means you'll embark on a long journey soon. The captain has announced that we're landing soon. I have a few ideas of sights to see and foods to try, but having never been to this part of the world, there will undoubtedly be surprises. So what's our best approach? When in Rome, do as the Romans do! But we're not in Rome you say? It's an old saying that means when you're visiting a place, it's best to follow the conventions of the area. In the Fourth Century A.D., when St. Augustine moved to Milan, he discovered people there didn't fast on Saturdays. He followed the wise advice of the bishop of Milan to avoid criticism and followed the customs of the area. In similar fashion, how about we eat like the locals and try some authentic food? So pull up a chair, rest and refresh. Maybe next time we'll find some new words to tickle your tastebuds. by Jo Barnes

Yukon-Ho! by Krista Rossato

It was barely winter in Victoria

and already the days felt short, the air cool and the dampness permeated to our core. We complained because we were still another two months away before the first signs of spring would start to pop through the soil. As we started to think about a brief escape to cure our winter blues, we jokingly asked: "Why go south when we can go north?" After all, adventure awaits in every direction. Within a few days we booked our trip for January 31, to Whitehorse, Yukon. Packing for a trip to Northern Canada in Winter, when you've lived in Victoria all your life, is an adventure all on its own. We called upon our friends. Ski pants were replaced by thermal snow pants, Gore-Tex was changed to down parkas, rubber boots became snow boots, and gloves were swapped out for mittens. We concluded that there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. Our first adventure was a day of ice fishing and snowmobiling. At -18°C, and travelling with kids, our guides replaced any gear to ensure we would be comfortable. We set out onto Fish Lake to a warming hut. The sun sat low on the horizon and had a halo of light around it known as a "sundog." We never expected to catch any fish, but the experience of being out on a lake learning to drill holes, in the company of no one, made it all perfect. The following day was the start of the Yukon Quest. At 1,600 kilometres, it is the world's longest dogsled race which goes between Whitehorse and Fairbanks, Alaska. The crowd cheered as each team

disappeared into the wild for the next 10 to 16 days. Inspired by the race, we too went dog-sledding. With a team of only five dogs each we were acutely aware of their strength and excitement as they pulled us along the frozen river. A few days into our trip, we drove north of the city to a cabin in the woods near Lake Laberge. The stage was set, so we packed our copy of The Cremation of Sam McGee, illustrated by Ted Harrison, who is famous for his colourful paintings of the North. Our trip was planned to coincide with the new moon, so the sky would be at its darkest for the best viewing of the Aurora Borealis. Around 11 p.m., the horizon appeared illuminated and soon ribbons of light moved and danced rhythmically high up into the dark night sky. Other activities included glass blowing, Takhini Hot Springs, Wildlife Preserve, Transportation Museum, and the Beringia Interpretive Centre where we learned more about climate evolution in the North. A few things we discovered from our northern adventure: the Visitor Centre is remarkable and it is clear that the Yukon welcomes you; granola bars stored in your coat pocket are inedible until defrosted; the key to comfort is warm mittens and quality footwear (one pair of warm socks is better than several pairs worn at the same time); don't touch metal with bare hands; -43°C is really impressive; camera batteries lose their power quickly in the extreme cold; and finally, you don't need a bikini body for this type of adventure – a little extra body padding will only make this trip more enjoyable. Your Favourite Place in Canada by Lara Gladych

Seaside Magazine wants to live up to our slogan of being "the voice of the Saanich Peninsula," so, in every issue, we ask people to answer a question. We're looking for responses from all ages and across the diverse neighbourhoods that form our community. "What is one of your favourite places in Canada to visit – a place you think every Canadian should see?" What better way to celebrate our country than to tout the many interesting, beautiful and memorable places to see across this gorgeous country of ours? I have driven twice from Ontario to British Columbia via the Trans-Canada Highway, and that is something I would recommend every Canadian do in their lifetime. I have been as far east as Quebec, and I eagerly look forward to seeing Newfoundland and the Maritime provinces one day. To narrow it down, the places I would love for all my friends and loved ones to see would be the shores and waters of Georgian Bay and the North Channel, as well as Manitoulan Island and the Bruce Peninsula – an homage to my homeland in Ontario. As British Columbians, we are very proud of our province and the special places right here at home that fill our souls, and so we should be! We are gifted with a particularly beautiful and naturally wondrous

20 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | AUGUST 2019

province, and that makes it a favourite both for those of us who live here and visitors alike. Banff, Tofino, Jasper and Vancouver Island were very popular responses, and understandably so. To this list I would add Lake Louise. Bill recalled a trip with two friends to Kananaskis Country many years ago as a medical student. "Literally 40 years ago. We had the most awesome backpacking trip. It was spectacular." "For me what pops up is Long Beach," said Lynn, and her husband, Doug, adds: "The wild coast of Vancouver Island." Lynn continues: "What's actually amazing are the prairies. I just loved seeing all the different crops and how they turned into this beautiful quilt." Alicia came up with these notable favourites: "Old Quebec City, Niagara Falls (not just the falls but the quirky town!) and the Icefields Parkway." Tina chimed in on the conversation: "Gwaii Haanas National Park and Haida Gwaii. And a couple of years ago I convinced a friend to go to Winnipeg with me. Everyone should see The Canadian Museum for Human Rights; it's incredible." Meghan agreed with Winnipeg as a must-see. "I remember it as being one of the most diverse cities, with hands down the nicest people in all of the many cities that I visited across Canada."

Kerri loves Grand Beach, Manitoba, and Bridget mentioned Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, citing Al Capone's underground tunnels as a highlight. Bonita concurred with Moose Jaw. She also shared with me how much she loved Newfoundland. "[My husband] and I went there 18 years ago on our motorbike and explored so many tiny fishing villages that no one would typically explore because they were off the beaten path. The people we met were the most generous, friendly and warm to us. It felt like we were visiting another country – their Newfie accents were so hard to understand. We loved it there. I would go back in a heartbeat." Coming back to B.C., Shushwap Lake was mentioned by Alison, Pam and Kim. In addition, Kim recommended Okanagan wine country, a notable destination for Susan, too. "Not very glamorous but for B.C. folk, Barkerville, the Cariboo Gold Rush Towns and the drive up to it through B.C. is fantastic. Beautiful scenery that fills you with a sense of what 'old time B.C.' must have been like. Seeing sites like the 'blink and you miss it' settlement of Spuzzum, Hells Gate's rushing waters and driving through the Fraser Canyon is like stepping back in time. I loved it as a child and need to do it with my own children!" This was Mary. Emily, Andrea and Elissa all included P.E.I. as a favourite. While Andrea pined for the "sandstone cliffs, Elephant Rock, red sand beaches and amazing scenery," Elissa spoke of other aspects: "It's hard to imagine more shades of green than we see here on the West Coast, but flying in over the island province in the summer was a study in verdurous fields – like a patchwork quilt. The people are friendly, there is a hopping music scene, and an amazing food culture. Loved it!" Here is a rundown of some of the other Canadian destinations highlighted: Yukon, the north shores of Lake Superior, Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump, Frank Slide, the Terry Fox Memorial Lookout, Montreal, Ottawa, Yellowknife, southern Nova Scotia, Halifax, Osoyoos, the Muskokas, the Kootenays, Saskatoon, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Bay of Fundy, Gaspé and Drumheller. Tommy Douglas said: "My dream is for people around the world to look up and to see Canada like a little jewel sitting at the top of the continent." Go explore our jewel.

MICHAEL KAESHAMMER

VIP GALA & CONCERT FEATURING THE LIVE TAPING OF MICHAEL'S TV SPECIAL AUGUST 21 & 22 6:00pm gala 7:30pm Concert

2243 Beacon Avenue, Sidney

250.656.0275 marywinspear.ca With Special Guest Apperances

Boogie ‘n Blues Join Michael Kaeshammer for the live concert taping of his upcoming TV special Boogie on the Blues Highway. This full length concert will spotlight the fiery-fingered, captivating performance Michael Kaeshammer has become known for around the world. The audience will be taken on a trip of the Blues Highway making stops from Memphis to New Orleans. This two night series will include a pre-show cocktail gala for all attendees, and a full length concert filmed for TV, which will include guest appearances by some of Canada’s most iconic musicians. In his live show, Michael and his band seamlessly cross the boundaries of a more formal tribute to a classic American musical genre into a realm of a piano masterclass. By the second set the band settles into a groove somewhat reminiscent of a New Orleans Mardi Gras street party. At one point the horn section leaves the stage with Michael on tambourine to go on a “walkabout” ending in the back row entertaining a surprised and appreciative audience, while the rhythm section below never misses a beat. In another section of the second set, Michael and his guitarist are in a cutting contest duking it out between piano and Fender guitar. But the big takeway for his audience is ‘fun had and romance ignited.’ Boogie on the Blues Highway is a front row seat to this musical experience and a backstage pass to the alluring lights and cameras of a live TV taping.

The prolific Vancouver Island based singer/songwriter/ pianist/producer Michael Kaeshammer has earned a loyal international following as a triple threat. He’s an undeniable piano virtuoso with a technical mastery of many different styles, an eloquent singer/songwriter, and a seductive and engaging performer. Michael’s well-honed skills have him headlining prestigious concert halls from North America to Europe and most recently China, where he is breaking new ground for jazz. Michael is a proven inspiration for young music students as he first made his own mark as a young piano prodigy. Growing up in Offenburg, Germany, he studied classical piano prior to falling in love at age 13 with the boogie-woogie and stride piano stylings. When his parents move the family to British Columbia, Michael quickly attracted a following, becoming popular on the jazz and blues festival circuit. Building on a large following on the Saanich Peninsula, Michael jumped at the opportunity to film his TV Special in his hometown. This two part concert series is a way to involve the community and patrons of the Charlie White Theatre who have supported Michael throughout his career with numerous sold out concerts. Tickets for Michael’s TV Special Concerts are on sale now at the Mary Winspear box office. Order by phone 250-656-0275 or online at marywinspear.ca.

A Time of Celebration: The Annual Yellow Wolf Intertribal Powwow by Jesse Holth

After taking a hiatus in 2018, the Annual Yellow Wolf Intertribal Powwow

24 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | AUGUST 2019

is returning to the Saanich Peninsula. From August 2 to 4, this special celebration will mark the 25th powwow held in honour of Alice Mary Moody Sampson. "We decided to honour her by hosting this annual family event on the B.C. Day long weekend," says Alice's daughter, Angel Sampson. She explains that her mother, Nez Perce from Ahsahka, Idaho, moved here when she married their father, Francis Sampson. "Our mom gave up all of her teachings, traditions and cultural practices," she says, "and lived according to her father's cultural ways and traditions, the Coast Salish of Saanich (SÁNEĆ) territory." Alice even became fluent in the Saanich (SENĆOŦEN) language. "After my dad passed away, [my mom] would take me home to Idaho where I was introduced to powwow dancing." The family decided to hold an annual powwow over 25 years ago. "We wanted people to know some of our mom's ways that she gave up when she moved here." Originally called by their mother's traditional name, Wetanmay (pronounced Wu-tawnt-my), the Wetanmay Intertribal Powwow went on for a number of years, until Angel's brother John asked if they could change the name to Yellow Wolf. "Yellow Wolf is my son's traditional name," explains Angel. "He was given this name by my grandmother on my mother's side." Yellow Wolf was

her grandmother's brother, and cousin to Chief Joseph, who fought for the freedom and territory of the Nez Perce in Idaho in the late 1800's. "Yellow Wolf was an amazing warrior who fought against the U.S. government when they were trying to put the Nez Perce onto reserves." Now called the Yellow Wolf Intertribal Powwow, people come from all over to attend the event. "We have participants [from] B.C., Washington state, Idaho, Montana, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba," says Angel, who is the coordinator for the powwow. "We have [even] had visitors from [other parts of ] the world, places like Switzerland, Germany, England, Asia, Colorado, California, and so many other places." She says the visitor feedback is very positive, and they have received many compliments on the cultural event. Powwows are important social celebrations, where people meet together in song, dance and friendship. They are a way to honour each other. Angel says the family gathering is "a very social time," adding that "you will get to witness powwow singing, drumming and dancing." These kinds of events are especially meaningful today – there has been a long history of cultural suppression against First Nations here and elsewhere. Ceremonies and gatherings like powwows and potlatches were banned through various legislations enacted by the U.S. and Canada in the 1800s, up until at least 1951. Cultural practices like singing, dancing and other celebrations were prohibited, and many traditions were lost. The work to revitalize and preserve these practices, rituals and knowledge is ongoing. Angel says: "We are [always] open to anyone wanting to volunteer at our event." There will be many activities held at the Yellow Wolf Powwow, including a dance competition for the youth (18 and under), adult dance categories, and fun events for visitors to participate in. There will also be "vendors selling all kinds of wares," says Angel, including "First Nations art and craft vendors and nonFirst Nations too." A variety of events take place at the powwow: memorials, where pictures of people who have passed away are shown; namings, where people receive a traditional name; ceremonies and giveaways for people wanting to join the powwow circle; and there have even been weddings held. "We have our traditional foods for sale in our concession, plus some Western fare as well," says Angel. The event will take place at the Tsawout Gymnasium at 7728 Tetayut Road in Saanichton. "We are wheelchair accessible, and have camping available for those who want to stay for the whole weekend." She says there are also showers available for the guests, and their committee provides a breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings, "for those who wish to join us for a meal to start the day." For more information, or to volunteer, you can reach Angel at 250-665-7777.

"Dance itself is a prayer … the spiritual comes with you wherever you dance." Nez Perce, powwow dancer

so much more that has helped me start my business. The people I met through 4-H helped me find my passion in agriculture and taught me more than I could've imagined; with no prior knowledge before my time in the 4-H program I was able to start my farm only a year after my high school graduation." Sara Kate Smith, another 4-H alumni, from Barriere, B.C. also attributes many of the doors that have opened for her to her time in 4-H: "4-H has absolutely shaped every aspect of my life. It gave me the confidence to chase after what I am passionate about and the opportunities to explore a number of careers. I know for a fact that 4-H influenced my university experience, my job prospects, and scholarships. 4-H has taken me around the world and opened doors to the United Nations and other wonderful organizations. I will forever advocate for 4-H and the leadership opportunities it provides and I look forward to continuing to give back to my club, my community, my country, and my world." Hopefully by now you can see that the 4-H program is much more than having animals and engines at fairs, but rather it is a global community that fosters youth to be tomorrow's local, national and world leaders. Come see your local 4-H district at the Saanich Fair this Labour Day weekend to learn more about how you can be part of the 4-H community!

Authorized by Joey Vaesen, Financial Agent

Mooing cows, crowing roosters, neighing horses and revving engines create the atmosphere at the Saanich Fair as you stroll around, along with the hustle and bustle of all the visitors. Accompanying all the animals and machines are youth who are excited to share them with the public, and talk about their 4-H experience. This may be the extent that the 4-H program has been explained to you, but 4-H is much more than just the Saanich Fair and the animals and machines there! 4-H Canada is a youth organization for members from six to 21 that focuses on youth development through project work, striving to create tomorrow's leaders. With its roots in agriculture, the program has grown to encompass an array of project opportunities that appeal to more youth, hoping to bring this youth development program into the urban setting as well as rural areas. When members are not at fairs, there are numerous opportunities across the province for them to take part in. Provincial Communications Competition, Agri-Career Week, Food for Thought, and Youth Action are some of the possibilities from which members can obtain a more in-depth look at agriculture in B.C. as well as learn how to be leaders in their communities. At these events, members from across the whole province get together to learn and grow, while also building lasting friendships! From these province-wide opportunities, members are also selected to attend national and international opportunities such as the Canadian Citizenship Conference, Canadian Members Forum, and U.S. National 4-H Conference. Senior members can also apply to the Going Global Exchanges program where they can experience 4-H and cultures around the world! Along with all the opportunities 4-H itself provides, 4-H sets members up to succeed in their careers and ambitions. Makenna Cyr is a 4-H Alumni from the Port Alberni District and here is how she feels 4-H helped her start her own farm: "Being dedicated to both the program and project work in 4-H taught me record keeping, budgeting, strong work ethic, marketing and

LIVING OFF THE LAND

Sun Trio Farm:

A Gift of Garden Goodness Many years ago living on the Saanich Peninsula required people to draw their sustenance directly from the land upon by Jo Barnes which they lived. While most of us today rely on grocery markets and at best tend to backyard gardens, there are still those in our community for whom living off the land is a way of life. This is the sixth in a Seaside series featuring local community members who

all share the same passion for the land and love of what they do. He engineered systems to preserve food – now he spends his time engineering ways to grow food and does so in harmony with the environment. Dennis O'Brien, co-owner of Sun Trio Farm in Central Saanich, used to apply his engineering background to designing refrigeration controls, but now uses his skills to operate energyefficient greenhouses and a thriving organic farm. "When we started and saw what was happening at the conventional greenhouse with the use of chemicals, we decided to start an organic greenhouse. There wasn't much like this around here, and we wanted to extend the growing season," says Dennis. Along with his brothers, Frank and Mike, Dennis purchased the four-acre property off East Saanich Road in 2008. The name Sun Trio was chosen, "trio" referring to the farm's ownership by the three siblings Dennis, Mike, and Mary, and "sun" echoing the vital source of our life and energy. "Without the sun, we're not growing!" shares Dennis. "If we grow the little seedlings in their grow rooms, under the light they'll kind of stretch out and get long and gangly. But when you put them in the sun, they just power out! It's amazing when you see the growth of things!" The farm boasts a 20,000-square-foot main greenhouse and another 12,000 square feet of greenhouse space as well as acreage for

field produce. There is also another five acres off Halden Road where Sun Trio grows additional vegetables. The energy and drive behind this highly productive farm is underpinned by a singular vision to farm organically. "I like the growing of vegetables and knowing that they're healthy vegetables. When you're doing it the organic way, you're supporting the earth, the plants that grow in the earth and the people that eat the plants," says Dennis. Sun Trio's story began in 2008 when Dennis visited his brother Frank in Australia who was doing landscaping and finding success in growing greens and sprouts. The experience of seeing conventional greenhouse operations and the use of chemicals on plants sowed the seeds of an idea. "We saw the chemical feed going into the plants, the sprays that went on them and the problems," shares Dennis. Charting a course towards organic farming, the property was purchased and work began on transforming the land and greenhouses into a productive operation. It took creativity, hard work and persistence. "When we first came here there were four derelict greenhouses. Two of them we rebuilt and the others restructured. We went through a lot of hoops and lost a lot of crops because we were experimenting," says Dennis. "Using the skills we all had, we put it all together." Solar heat was installed and the boiler in the main greenhouse updated to a much more energy-efficient version. Initially sea soil was utilized and then aqua mulch, an effective mixture of forest finds and composted fish, was introduced. Both put nitrogen and nutrients into the soil. Dennis and his staff grow food in a way that nourishes and sustains the earth. Conventional farming uses herbicides and pesticides to deal quickly with issues like weeds or pests and chemicals such as liquid nitrogen to promote larger growth in plants. These methods, however, have consequences too. "The use of pesticides and herbicides is killing the natural organisms in the soil. We've got to build the soil up to get a stronger plant. We use fertilizers which cost more like feathermeal or bloodmeal. They break down, feed the microbes in the soil, and the plants uptake the nitrogen from the soil," says Dennis. And, the farm is thriving. On any given day there's a superb selection of salad greens, sprouts, herbs, field vegetables and berries. In August strawberries, blueberries, herbs, green beans, sprouts and garlic will be highlights. As well as local walk-in traffic, Sun Trio markets their produce to a variety of retailers including Thrifty Foods, The Local General Store, Mother Nature Market, Market on Yates, Saanich Peninsula Market, Moss Street Market, and Lifestyle Market, and their reach is growing. Like a seed that sprouts and grows to maturity, the passion for organic farming is truly blooming at this farm. It's a love of plants and soil that goes way back. Regardless of where Dennis has lived, worked or spent his leisure time, gardens have always been an integral part. "I come from a family of 10 children. We lived in Ontario. Basically we had three acres, and we had a lot of vegetable gardens. So we all had our hand in the dirt pretty early on," says Dennis. A love of the land and producing fresh locally grown food starts with just that: hands in the dirt. And in this case, the hands belong to a dedicated team at Sun Trio.

THE GOLDEN YEARS

How to Navigate Living Options for Seniors – Part 2 by Sherrin Griffin

Last month, we discussed

how lifestyle needs may change as we age, leading to the re-evalution of our living situation. We talked about the option of home support or moving to a well-appointed retirement community or assisted living facility, as well as touched on private-pay vs. subsidized options, including programs such as Independent Living BC (ILBC) and Seniors' Supportive Housing. According to B.C.'s Seniors' Advocate, currently in our province almost 95% of seniors live at home, with only a small portion receiving government-subsidized home support. The remaining percentage is made up of residential care seniors with complex care issues, largely subsidized; and the last few percent living in assisted living facilities, approximately 20% of which are subsidized. If you do choose, or your health necessitates, to move to a facility offering independent and/or assisted living services, making the right choice can be overwhelming. Here are some tips to help you choose/advocate for the most suitable facility for you or your loved one: • Make a list of available facilities (including ones recommended by Island Health and others that you may be aware of). Call the facilities and get an overview of what they offer to their residents. • Tour the facilities that you're interested in and meet with the staff/representatives responsible for care and services. • Research the provider of the facility. Check out their background, experience and track record. If a non-government provider, are they a member of the BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA)? Look into unsolicited referrals and reviews. • Does the facility meet your budget requirements? Is it subsidized? Make sure you understand the fee schedule: what exactly it includes and services that may be excluded, and how often the fees may increase. • Are there safety and security measures in place such as sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, and security measures for those who have dementia or Alzheimer's. What is the staff to resident ratio? How is staff expertise/accreditation measured and is ongoing training a priority? • Do the services and amenities meet your needs and wants? Are there qualified medical personnel on staff? Is the meal schedule reasonable and flexible? Are all desired services onsite? What kinds of activities are offered – onsite and/or offsite? Last month, we touched on how seniors with care needs that can't be managed in their own homes are often given little choice in where they would be placed. Exciting new legislation from the province, effective July 15, deems that seniors and their families will now be able VP, Operations, Sidney SeniorCare

to select up to three care homes of their choice, and if they don't get their first choice, they can keep their spot on the waiting list while receiving home support or relocation to another facility temporarily. Essentially, seniors no longer have to move to the first bed that opens up. The new legislation also requires consent from an adult to move them into a care home. These changes will give seniors more of a voice in where they want to live, rather than penalizing them for turning down the next available bed or facility that they don't want to go to. In a province where seniors 65 and over make up just under one million of the population and which is projected to skyrocket to over 1.5 million in the next 20 years, these are encouraging "wins" in our mission to provide quality care and housing for our aging population.

Men's Summer Fashion Accessories by David Bremner d.g.bremner & co.

At first glance men might feel a little left out compared to ladies in the accessories market. Not true! Options for men's accessories today have probably never been better this side of the '60s! To start, let's take a well-groomed man in a great fitting pair of jeans and a nice shirt and let's take him from zero to 100 in just a few steps. I'm going to assume our guy is already on the wild sock and great belt

bandwagon that we've been on for a few years now. Turn up the cuffs on the shirt, and add a funky watch and maybe a tasty bracelet. Watches have become almost a forgotten fashion accessory, but seriously, they never go out of style, and can really make an impact. Bracelets are another great option: they're available in hundreds of styles and colours and can be an inexpensive way to turn up the voltage on a great outfit. If you choose to go that direction, watch and bracelet on the same wrist please. Sunglasses! Picture our guy in a new pair of wayfarers or aviators! Practical, timeless and fabulous. Have several pairs and take advantage of all the colours, styles and price points that are available today! Rings. You don't have to be Keith Richards to rock some great hand jewelry! Don't we all have a few pieces in the drawer we can pull out and show off? Try it … you'll be amazed at the comments, and it feels like creating something from nothing. Repurposing an heirloom is a wonderful way to pay homage to the past! Let's add a jacket. Today's wind breaker is a casual sport coat. Dress up or dress down; these are the icing on the great accessory cake! Not just for dress pants anymore, the modern sport coat harks back to when these were known as hacking jackets … and were meant to be worn outdoors in any weather. Take the sport coat to another level with a pocket handkerchief (or two! don't be afraid to mix them up!). Finally, just past the socks are the shoes. You can go at least two ways here. The sneaker has come full circle, as have dress shoes by morphing into the casual environment. Sneakers are not a running shoe – there is a difference! Sneakers are sleek and fashionable whereas running shoes are for running. Depending on the colour, today sneakers will take you from casual Friday to a fabulous dinner out! Again, have several, no … have many! Embrace the variety and all the colours available! Dress shoes are not just for dress clothes anymore: pair them with your best jeans and the whole outfit moves up a few notches. Keep 'em clean – you won't regret it and with care a good pair will last a long time. The only rule is "there are no rules" with accessorizing your outfit to match your personality. The trick for most of us is be comfortable with what you choose to wear, and to wear the accessories, not let the accessories wear you.

Solving the Fibromyalgia Puzzle

Fibromyalgia (FM) is not a new syndrome; most people have heard of the condition or know someone who has been diagnosed with the disease. A Scottish physician noted the disease in the 1820's where patients had muscle and joint stiffness, pain, fatigue and disrupted sleep patterns. Standard tender points were also described. It wasn't, however, until 1981 that the disease was scientifically confirmed and officially noted as a condition by The American College of Rheumatology in 1990. Today we still have no official cause of fibromyalgia, but the theory is that the nervous system becomes heightened to pain as a result of injury, infection, or trauma (physical/emotional). Whatever the cause, this disease can be most debilitating as patients look for ways of managing the symptoms. As a naturopathic physician who focuses on seeking the cause of disease, it can be somewhat tricky to decide how to approach patients with fibromyalgia and determine an effective treatment plan. From what we know about FM there are certain patterns noted: Muscle and joint pain. Pain sensation involves the nervous system. As a result, it is important to work to calm the nervous system to achieve improvement. Conventional medications commonly prescribed include antidepressants and gabapentin; natural medicines can include magnesium, GABA, and botanical anti-inflammatories such as turmeric. Inflammation. Infections (viral or other), diet and toxins can all be contributors to inflammation. High sensitivity CRP is a non-specific marker of inflammation that can be done easily through blood work. Certain infections such as Epstein Barr, parvovirus or Lyme infection has been shown to be associated with the disease. Food sensitivities can also be a contributor to low-grade inflammation that makes the

Elizabeth May, OC, MP Saanich - Gulf Islands

joints and muscles more sensitive to pain. These can be tested with simple blood work. Fatigue is a classic symptom of fibromyalgia. Even though chronic pain can be exhausting, other causes of FM fatigue include poor sleep quality, thyroid deficiency, nutritional deficiencies and chronic immune reactivity due to infection or sensitivity. It is important to test for thyroid imbalances, consider B12 or iron testing and eat a hypoallergenic, alkaline diet to reduce inflammation. Poor sleep quality. In dealing with FM, pain can be a common disruptor of sleep. Although certain pharmaceuticals can help with sleep, I always recommend doing a trial test with melatonin, magnesium or passionflower to aid and assist with quality sleep. Good sleep hygiene and a mattress that is both soft and supportive seem to help as well. Brain fog. Most patients with FM suffer with some sort of cognitive impairment, whether that be short-term memory difficulties, slowed thinking or general decline in sharpness and clarity or "brain fog." Causes include pain overtaking the memory pathways, lack of sleep and the possibility of the brain not receiving adequate oxygen as a result of reduced blood flow from FM. It is important that FM patients exercise gently regularly to improve circulation, have iron and B12 levels checked. Screening for sleep apnea is also a good idea. Even though the direct cause of fibromyalgia has yet to be discovered, patients can find support for the challenges they face. With individualized health care and proper testing of presenting health issues, FM can be managed so one can function in a more normal, pain-free way.

Connecting Our Farm toYour Table … Infused Vinegars: Endless Options for Flavour! Our vinegars impart a great deal of flavour to so many things! I have worked extremely hard to develop the flavours. Have you tried our vinegars? You can add heat to a dish by using the Peppered Nasturtium, Blueberry Blast or Douglas Fir Chilli. They are a welcome addition to cocktails, or brighten your water by adding a splash … you will drink more water! Instead of reaching for oil next time you cook, try using a flavoured vinegar; the versatility is amazing. Here are some suggestions: 1. Roast vegetables – just drizzle some on top of your vegetables for extra flavour or to add heat 2. Sautée 3. Risotto 4. Sorbet – Place a bottle of fruit infused vinegar into an icecream maker and turn it on; 20 minutes later you have a fruit flavoured sorbet with only vinegar! 5.Crème Brûlée topping 6. Cocktails 7. Laura Invites You to Visit Snowdon House Crème Brûlée with Pear & Anise Course: Dessert. Serves 6 people Prep time: 10 min Cook time: 30 min Total time: 40 min

Snowdon House’s dedicated founder Laura Waters has been creating, cooking and gardening her way through life for as long as she can remember.

6 egg yolks

6 tbsp white sugar

2.5 cups heavy cream

½ tsp vanilla extract

2 tbsp brown sugar

½ bottle Pear & Anise Vinegar

Preheat oven to 300° Place Pear & Anise Vinegar in a pot and reduce to half the volume. Beat in egg yolks, 4 tablespoons white sugar and vanilla extract until thick. Pour cream into a pot and stir over low heat until it almost comes to a boil. Remove the cream from the heat and stir into egg mixture; beat until combined. Pour mixture into a double boiler and stir over simmering water until the cream coats the back of a spoon, for about three minutes. Pour into shallow heatproof bowls. Place bowls in a shallow pan full of water. Bake in oven for 30 minutes. Remove and cool to room temperature. Refrigerate for at least an hour or overnight. Preheat over to broil. Sprinkle the remaining sugar between bowls and place dish under the broiler for sugar to melt about 2 minutes. Watch very closely so it does not burn. Remove from heat. Top with Pear & Anise Vinegar.

Snowdon House Gourmet & Gifts, named after Laura’s grandmother, is tucked away in a peaceful little glade just off Mills Road in North Saanich. Surrounded by grassy fields and lush, woodsy landscape, it features a gift shop, which boasts unique food products made on the farm.

Horse Wisdom Farm:

S TA B L E & FIELD

Healing With Horses by Cassidy Nunn

Emily May has been a true

"horse girl" from a young age, and began taking riding lessons at seven. When she moved out west to Victoria for university, she was eager to keep horses a part of her life and applied for a part-time job with Victoria Carriage Tours (VCT). In this way, horses continued to be present throughout her undergrad degree at the University of Victoria and while completing her masters in Counselling Psychology. Emily dreamed of pairing her talents with horses along with her passion for psychology, and after some time spent researching a variety of certification programs, she found her calling with Equine Assisted Therapy and went on to complete her Facilitated Equine Experiential Learning Certificate (FEEL) in May 2018. These days she still works a few shifts at VCT, but focuses her energy on her blossoming Equine Assisted Therapy practice at Horse Wisdom Farm in Saanichton. Her business partner, Katarina Sjoblom is the owner of VCT and the beautiful 20-acre farm that 33 horses, some riding, many working carriage and a few retired, call home. To set the farm up for her practice, Emily converted the laundry room in the horse barn into her discussion room and throughout her FEEL practicum she worked with a few of the retired carriage horses, training them to use in her practice. Percherons Zeke, Sassy and Grey Mollie are her main go-to equine

facilitators for the program. No riding is involved in this type of counselling and most of the activities happen on the ground in the large round pen on the farm. To horse people, these face-to-face activities resemble natural horsemanship techniques, but come from a different perspective. Typically, Emily's clients are not horse people, although she says she has had some of this type of client come to her and they generally leave the sessions having learned to interact with their favourite animals in a different way. Sessions begin with an approximately 40-minute discussion, then an activity with the horse, followed by a debrief. Most sessions are two hours and Emily says she will often see progression after three sessions – something that could have taken closer to 10 sessions in private practice without the interaction with the horses. Animals are increasingly used in therapy. With horses, Emily says: "the idea is that they are mirrors, so they tend to lend a hand with introspection." She focuses on promoting better wellness and health through mindfulness-based techniques. When the sessions in the round pen begin, Emily teaches her clients how to approach the horses and ask for their consent: "we only touch the horses after the horse consents to be touched," she says. At Horse Wisdom Farm private, group or corporate sessions are all offered and those who would benefit from this type of therapy is anyone experiencing anxiety, depression or PTSD, among other issues. Emily adds that she finds this type of therapy is a great option for those who don't want to talk that much about themselves. If you feel that Equine Assisted Therapy might be a good fit for you, you can find out more information and contact Emily through her website: www. horsewisdomfarm. com.

Women's Health Concerns: Uncovering Root Causes

So, you've been told your hormones are out of balance. Perhaps you suffer with PMS, are going through menopause, or recently came off hormonal birth control? Yes, these conditions involve fluctuations in hormones, and there are imbalances present. But I want you to think of your hormones as markers of your state of health, not the reason for it. Your hormones tell the story of your physiology, and there are many reasons for them to be imbalanced. Let's start with your brain (specifically, the hypothalamus) as a root cause for hormone imbalance. To keep it simple, this part of the brain is in control of which hormones are released, and when. It is at the top of the chain, and sends signals to other endocrine glands to release and/or produce certain hormones as it sees fit. For example, what has long been called "Adrenal Fatigue" has been shown to be an issue not with the adrenal glands themselves, but a mechanism in the brain in response to chronic stress. The brain sees the risk in continuously releasing stress hormones, so it tells the adrenal glands to stop producing, and we crash. Stress levels and mental health affect not only the adrenals, but all endocrine glands. Chronic stress is even powerful enough to halt menstruation, as is the case with Hypothalamic Amenorrhea. Therefore, stress management should certainly be considered in any case of hormone imbalance. This could look like lifestyle changes such as freeing up your calendar a little, learning to meditate, walking by the ocean; whatever resonates with you. More root causes include gut health, liver function, digestion and

excretion. Hormones require the liver to "recycle" hormones, then it releases the hormone waste into the small intestine for eventual excretion. Three situations must be present for this to work: a well functioning liver not overburdened by toxins, balanced gut bacteria, and a digestive tract with good motility. Good motility means having daily bowel movements, give or take. If the liver isn't running well, these hormones won't be recycled properly and can re-enter the bloodstream, causing an excess of certain hormones, as with Estrogen Dominance. Regarding gut health: if harmful gut bacteria are present, they may convert the hormone waste back into active forms, and again they would be recirculated. The same goes for lack of motility, or constipation. Excess transit time in the bowel can lead to hormone reabsorption, as well as other toxins being reabsorbed too. Another root cause for hormone imbalance is blood sugar imbalance. This can often be improved by shifting dietary habits. Better blood sugar balance can be achieved by consuming fat and protein with each meal, by choosing complex carbs over simple ones, and by avoiding refined sugars. Whew – that was a lot! A few things you can put into practice immediately are increasing hydration and physical activity to improve bowel movements, and getting out for some fresh air for stress management. Seek out your local Holistic Nutritionist for individualized guidance!

a poster child for the Saanich practice and philosophy of trying to provide our students with a "value added grad." Though high school graduation occured at the end of June, Sene had already successfully graduated from the year-long Hairstylist training program offered out of our own Studio 63 teaching salon. "This program was absolutely amazing! It prepared me to have a career before I even left high school," offered Sene. She entered the program part-way through grade 11 and finished up by the midway mark of her grade 12 year. During the second semester of grade 12 she wrapped up a couple of academic courses at Saanichton Individual Learning Centre, participated in a Recreation Management course at Stelly's Secondary, and held down a part-time position at Studio A where she is currently logging hours for her Hairstylist Apprenticeship. Salon owner Abby Lopez is no stranger to the Saanich Hairstylist program. Sene is the fourth student she has hired from the program. Abby is thrilled with Sene: "Sene is amazing! She is very precise and clearly cares about her clients." She went on to say: "She is a fast learner and is really showing huge gains in her confidence and people skills." Abby was not the only one to notice Sene's boost in confidence and abilities. Her mother, Lillian, was thoroughly impressed with the maturity and focus Sene started to display once she started the program. "Sene had perfect attendance for the entire program. She took total ownership and even set time aside for studying out of class. We are very proud of her accomplishments and so happy she found something she loves," said Lillian. "We are also very grateful for the mentorship from the program instructor, Anastasia Antoiadis as well as support from the ILC career teacher Heidi Hackman." Heidi was instrumental in helping to set up the work experience placement at Salon A. A big highlight for Sene was when Abby Lopez offered Sene her own chair in Salon A. This is like a right of passage for fledgling stylists and affords them the opportunity to really start building their clientele. Sene has a few regulars now and helps service the walk-in clients. She admitted it wasn't easy in the beginning and even recounted how it took her over three hours to do her first big hair cut! "Now I can pump out that same hair cut, including shampooing, styling, and blow drying, in under an hour." Never has the saying "practice makes perfect" been truer! Sene is overjoyed knowing she is leaving high school with "… a career I can choose for ever, or leave for a while to explore something else. I have a way to support myself. Even if I pursue some other training or education, I will always have these skills." Contact Stu Rhodes at 250-415-9211 for more information on how to get involved as a student apprentice, or as an employer sponsor in this, or any other career program in Saanich School District.

Ready to Shuck Some Corn?

The season's first corn is upon us, so get your shucking hands ready! If you have not experienced it, fresh corn on the cob, picked the day of, is one of the true pleasures of the Saanich Peninsula. Corn is synonymous with sunshine, the smell of barbecue season, and summertime bliss. Whether you boil or grill your cobs, there are so many ways to enjoy it. It's simply delicious right off the cob, perhaps with herb butter or a rub. It makes an excellent addition to salads, salsas and let's not forget corn gazpacho: oh so refreshing on a warm summer day. Take a visit to the Peninsula Country Market and you will find fresh picked corn from Sluggett Farms. The Sluggett family have a long agricultural history on the Saanich Peninsula. Their 70-acre farm has been in operation since 1876. Originally cattle farmers, they began growing corn in the mid 1990's when a four-acre water dugout was made on their property. A tender annual and member of the grass family, producing corn requires a large amount of water. This dugout allows for continuous irrigation throughout the growing season. There are about six types of corn including sweet corn, most commonly found this time of year fresh for enjoyment. After by Leah Bickford

Director of Marketing, Peninsula Country Market

experimenting with over a dozen sub-varieties over the years, the Sluggetts have narrowed their choices down to nine, including yellow and peaches and cream. Varied maturation times allow for harvest from July through to sometimes-late October, weather dependant. None of the seeds used to grow the Sluggett corn are genetically modified. For best enjoyment, Larry Sluggett suggests boiling your corn about three minutes. Or, grill it for five and remember to soak your husks in water prior. The Saanich Peninsula is fortunate to have received the contributions of the Sluggett family for over 140 years, both agriculturally and within the community at large. Sluggett Farms corn will be available at the Peninsula Country throughout the rest of the season as available. The Peninsula Country Market is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. at the Historic Saanich Fairgrounds until October 12. For a list of weekly vendors and information, visit the website: http://peninsulacountrymarket.ca or follow @peninsulacountrymarket. Sluggett Farms is located at 6881 West Saanich Road. 250-652-6396; www.facebook.com/sluggett.farms. You can purchase their products seven days a week from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at their stand while in season.

Alexandra Yates: Encore Please! by Anne Miller

Her career path was inevitable. Alexandra (Lexa) Yates was born into a creative family and has music in her blood. From a tender age, Lexa could be found humming in her stroller before she could even talk. By the time she was three and a half, she was enrolled in Suzuki violin lessons and even spent her lunch hours away from elementary school attending lessons. "I'd have to wolf down my lunch in the car," she said, all because she loved music that much. It was no surprise, then, to learn that the famed Hoagy Carmichael was her great-great uncle. Music was, and still is, an essential element of her life. At 10 years old, she began six years of training at the renowned Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan. The program was rigorous and enriching but after three years of instruction and performing violin, she went on strike. She was tired and lacked a social life. The next phase of her young life was a mission to find her "own sound," to explore her unique musical gifts. She chose voice, training as an opera singer, and therein she created a distinct sound that was her own. As high school was ending, Lexa contemplated plans for her future. Prestigious music schools accepted her but she deeply missed home. Thus, she enrolled at UVic, where she was offered free tuition. She didn't finish the three-year degree program but she learned a valuable lesson. To succeed, a student needs a good match with a coach. Lexa explains that, while you can learn to master techniques, if you are to excel and feel joy, there must be harmony with your coach. She moved again to Michigan and studied with an amazing vocal coach. She discovered that the degree wasn't key. "It was my sound and being inspired that mattered." While there, her path was to take a different direction again. Encouraged by a teacher, she gradually ventured into teaching music, beginning with Suzuki violin lessons. She loved it. After 10 years in Michigan, she continued as a teacher back at home, discovering she's a better teacher than a singer. She now

makes her living teaching violin, voice and music writing. Lexa's approach to teaching was honed by years of personal experience. Contrary to the way she was taught as a child, her style is not "my way or the highway." Rather, her teaching is very much client-centred. From the get-go, she asks the student: "How do you learn? What triggers discomfort? What do you love about music?" Proceeding, she says, "OK. Let's unpack it and find your own voice." Her rewards are many. Students achieve excellence elsewhere and continue to keep in touch. A young violin student casually plays a piece she composed and moves from violin into music writing. A 55-year-old vocal student is making an album as a legacy to her family. Lexa feels honoured to be a teacher. In that role, she allows someone to excel beyond her and she is not threatened. Rather, she relishes being able to release something special in them. Lexa lives and works in Sidney, nurturing students and her talented daughter, Helen, within the sensational world of music. As she takes on new students, she says: "I'm not looking for the best ones. I'm looking for the ones that are doing their best to sound the way they love." Photo by Nunn Other Photography.

I'm continually amazed at the abundance of local farms, wineries, cideries, distilleries, restaurants and by Cassidy Nunn caterers we are blessed with here on Vancouver Island, who make farming, producing and eating local a priority and a way of life. Featuring many of these amazing local businesses is the annual Feast of Fields – B.C.'s largest local food and beverage festival – a delicious event put on by the charitable organization Farm Folk City Folk, which strives to bring more awareness to sustainable food production in B.C. Every year they put on three Feasts across the province, one in the Okanagan, one in metro Vancouver and one on southern Vancouver Island. Sarah Hughes, one of the event planners for the Vancouver Island event, recently took me behind the scenes to see how this incredible event comes to fruition each year. Sarah has a background in event planning and has been a part of many charity events and this is her second year, along with Crystal Chabot, as planners of the southern Vancouver Island Feast of Fields. On Sunday, August 25, the 22nd Vancouver Island Feast will be held at Snowdon House Gourmet & Gifts on Mills Road in North Saanich. Planning for the feast begins every year in February, with Sarah handling the logistics and Crystal organizing participants. Every participant has to have an emphasis on local, sustainable and zero waste – they are encouraged to get creative with how they serve their food and drinks, using everything from clam shells to lettuce leaves to bamboo to present their items on. "We don't do that typical food festival where everyone goes and the

garbage bins are overflowing," says Sarah. Those attending the Feast of Fields can purchase a wood platter for $10 either ahead of time or once at the Feast to place their food and drinks on while touring the event. "People are often very disconnected from where their food comes from," says Sarah, which is why it's important, she emphasizes, for the Feast to be hosted at a local farm venue and to bring the public to where the food is actually grown. The importance of good ingredients and moving away from highly processed food is highlighted in the many delectable options produced by each year's participants. There are usually around 40 participants involved each year, approximately 20 food and 20 alcohol + non-alcohol, including Q at the Empress, Toque Catering, Church & State Wines, Wildfire Organic Bakery and many, many more. Many local sponsors such as Whole Foods and Shady Spaces (which donate all the tents for the event) come together along with around 40 volunteers who are relied on to keep the day running smoothly with set up, tear down, running ice, helping with parking etc. A silent auction fundraiser is another highlight, as well as musical performances throughout the afternoon. This year, parking will be in the Thrifty's warehouse parking lot and the airport loop is conveniently located for those looking to bike to Snowdon House (there will be bike parking available too). Round-trip buses are organized each year as well with several pick-up and drop off locations in the Victoria area and these tickets must be purchased ahead of time. The 600 available Feast tickets (and there are youth tickets available for those under 19) usually do tend to sell out so be sure to get yours soon if you haven't already! Time to Downsize – and Move Into a Tiny Home?

60 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | AUGUST 2019

story by JANICE HENSHAW photos by Nunn Other Photography

Can you imagine living in a space that is 30 feet long and 8.5 feet wide – approximately 350 square feet? Try measuring it out somewhere in your home or outside on the lawn to get a good idea of what a tiny home of that size feels like. Add in some cabinets, a bathroom and a kitchen, all of which take up floor space. Start deciding what possessions you would have to give up to fit into that space. Perhaps the big screen TV(s)? The treadmill? Your walls of books? Your favourite kitchen appliances? And how about … your shoes? Are you starting to feel free – and excited – about losing the weight of "things" and possessions? Or are you shaking your head with relief that it's just a thought experiment and repeating, "No way, no way!" Are you wondering why on earth anyone would want to make those choices? Well, for Amy and Craig, the situation was like this: they are recent university graduates and fully employed; Amy works for the Department of Defence and Craig works as a two-way radio technician, you may see him climbing 200foot high communications towers for repairs. As enthusiastic soccer players, they love running, hiking and green spaces, but living in a 500-square-foot rental apartment in downtown Victoria meant they were surrounded by buildings, city noise, couldn't have pets, and they had to drive anytime they wanted to go hiking. Amy and Craig started to explore alternative housing options and fell in love with the idea of building a tiny house. They could afford it if they built the home on their family's rural property. Did they have the experience to build a home? "No," says Craig. "My grandpa was a shipwright and he taught me a lot, but I had only built some tables." Amy and Craig went ahead with the project, adhering to provincial building requirements while knowing that current bylaws in most areas prohibit the occupancy of tiny homes. With soaring house prices and scarce rental availability, however, they are hoping that perhaps bylaws will one day be changed to allow the use of tiny homes as a reasonable and creative option for built-out cities and rural areas. And its not just tiny home residents who could benefit: for homeowners struggling with mortgage payments, renting out space on their property to tiny home dwellers could help alleviate their financial stress. Amy and Craig spent a lot of time in the design phase, incorporating what they liked in other tiny homes in their own design. They walked through a 24-foot tiny home which was a fortunate experience because they knew right away that it wasn't big enough for them. "You can't do too much

research," says Amy. "There are tons of tiny homes online, which is very convenient. We watched videos and checked out how to do things every step of the way. It's great to hear about mistakes instead of making them yourselves." To provide a base for their home, Amy and Craig purchased a

new $10,000, 30-foot triple axle trailer and began construction. The most challenging part of the building process for them was finding time to do all the work. They worked weekends and evenings starting in February and, nearly finished, they moved in nine months later. The total cost for their tiny home, including the trailer, was $57,000. The outside of the home is very attractive, finished in blue vertical board-and-batten siding, cedar window trim and stained cedar shakes. The roof is a combination of metal and torch on asphalt. The central living area has a vaulted ceiling with two skylights that rises to almost 11 feet, creating an interesting roof profile and a more spacious feeling inside. Adding to that feeling of lightness are white walls and multiple windows, which look attractive trimmed in stained cedar. Small fir beams and live edge shelving add darker accents. At each end, there is a loft, one for storage, and one for the bedroom. The loft ceiling height is 3.5 feet, which sounds low, but windows and two large skylights over the bed dispel that feeling as they open up to the sky. A queen mattress has storage room all around. Luckily they have friends in all the trades; Angus Hayman (Oak and Arrow Construction) led them through the framing and structural portion and Josh Menzies (Menzies Plumbing & Heating) took on the plumbing and heating components. Amy says they splurged on the white farmhouse sink for the kitchen and it

On the other side of the kitchen the living space has a built-in couch with storage underneath and a side storage cubby. An electric fireplace in the living room adds to the ambience in winter. The large window by the main door swings open from the top so that its surface can be used as a food and beverage bar. Flooring is Russet Meadow Hickory Laminate. Now that their tiny home is almost finished, Amy and Craig look back and realize that at the start they really didn't know how this project was going to turn out, but both agree that it has exceeded their expectations. Amy says she found the work rewarding and she is very proud of their "comfy nest." Craig says: "It was a really fun project and we have learned a lot." With green space all around them, they now have more time to enjoy running and playing with their energetic new Vizsla puppy named Murphy, and to dream about their next project. Note: If you are contemplating building a tiny home visit the building codes department in your area to determine the legal requirements. In many areas, tiny homes are not yet permitted. Living Small:

ON DESIGN

Design Tricks for Today's Small Space Living Downsize ‌ it's what we are doing. Less financial burden with a smaller eco footprint. Living with less and doing more. Condo and micro loft living, tiny homes ‌ the list goes on. Making the most of your by Tracey Jones small space is easy with some and Stacey Kaminski clever design tricks. One of the easiest ways to make a small space feel larger is to keep the palette neutral, and light. This creates flow from room to room and appears less choppy. Another visual trick to create "higher ceilings" is to hang drapery rods at the ceiling line and extend the rods a few inches past the window. This allows for more light and makes the window appear larger. To avoid a corridor effect in a small narrow living room, swap out a large sofa for an L-shaped piece. This creates a cozy seating area. Think up! Create visual interest and storage space up the walls! A sneaky built-in shelf cheat is to use standard kitchen wall cabinets along the wall ( they typically run 12 " deep and 12 to 15" wide) Doors off = instant open shelving! Floating shelves are perfect for small rooms as they can hold so many things up and out of the way while still giving an airy feel. Install them stacked to the ceiling and you have the illusion of built in. This is perfect for small awkward alcoves as well. Adding wall hooks underneath a shelf creates an instant entry catchall for coats, hats, grocery bags and pet leashes. Going high and narrow in an entryway keeps the space from feeling cluttered. Search for shallow storage solutions ( about 6" deep) with surfaces that won't jut out into the thoroughfare of the hall. Narrow wall-mounted foldaway drawer units are specifically made to hold shoes and a myriad of other household goods. No room for surface-stealing night table lamps? Wall mount sconces instead. These can be hard wired in or there are lots of great plug-in options. Swap kitchen chairs for built-in bench seating along a wall or corner nook. This not only saves space but creates a great opportunity for bench storage (and a pretty seat cushion!) Consider the lost area under the stairs. We are seeing lots of built-in cubbies, deep drawers and even dog " houses" and kids' play areas in this under-used hidden spaces. Make your furniture do more. There are lots of under-bed storage systems out there now. We are also seeing built in convertible sleeper sofas with under storage in really small spaces paired with multifunction built in side tables. The tiny home

mantra is to have every piece of furniture have multiple purposes. A wall-mounted, flip-down desk can also serve as a great bar in the kitchen or dining area or add a mirror and it becomes a slim vanity in a bedroom Traditional swing doors are space stealers too! A sliding or track door allows for privacy but also saves precious square footage. Lots of track systems are sold in retail stores nowadays, ranging from ultra modern to rustic barn door styles. This is great for bedrooms, ensuites and multiuse office and guest spaces. There are so many great options! We preach Edit! Edit! Edit! to our downsizing clients. Living with less generally equals less stress. It is a very practised approach and practise can make perfect! ISLAND DISH

A Summer Breakfast

by Chris Compton

I'll admit it: I hate making

breakfast. I would rather drink a cup of coffee and begin my day than spend the time to make breakfast. Unfortunately, that is not a healthy choice and it leads to snacking later in the day. I don't know if it really is the most important meal of the day, but I feel better when I start with something delicious. This granola recipe takes a bit of time, but most of it is hands off and can be done with pretty minimal supervision. You can mix and match the type of fruit and nuts you are using to suit how you feel. I enjoy this with some yogurt and sliced fruit. This will keep around three weeks in an airtight container, but I have never had any last that long. Makes approximately 10 cups Granola 3 cups rolled oats ½ cup wheat germ ¼ cup chia seeds 1 cup buttermilk 8 tbsp butter 1 cup sugar 1 tsp salt Mix-ins ½ cup chopped pecans ½ cup chopped almonds ¼ cup puffed rice ½ cup dried tart cherries 2 tbsp butter

¼ cup pumpkin seeds ¼ cup hemp seeds ½ cup dried apricots ½ cup dried blueberries 3 tbsp honey

Preheat the oven to 350ºF Add the oats, wheat germ and chia seeds to a large bowl. Melt butter completely and combine with buttermilk, pour over oat mixture and let sit for 30 minutes. When the oats have absorbed the

milk add sugar and salt and allow to sit for another 30 minutes or until the sugar appears to have completely dissolved. While you are letting the oats sit, toast the nuts and pumpkin seeds in the oven for about 12 to 15 minutes. Be sure to keep an eye on them as they are toasting; you want a golden brown colour and they can easily burn. Chop your dried fruit into pieces about the same size as your nuts and pumpkin seeds. Mix the remaining ingredients into a large bowl. Heat the honey and the butter together until melted and the butter stops foaming, pour over nut mixture and stir until thoroughly combined. Reduce the oven to 300°F Spread the oat mixture on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Make sure to spread into an even layer. Bake for about one hour and 40 minutes. Every 20 minutes, check for colour and mix granola around the sheet ensuring rotation and that the outer edges aren't getting too dark. When the oats are golden brown and dry turn off the oven. Mix the oats and fruit together until thoroughly combined and then transfer back into the pan and put back into the oven and allow to sit for about 15 minutes. Take out and let cool for about an hour and then transfer to an airtight container. Enjoy! Watermelon Mimosa 1/3 medium watermelon (remove the hard black seeds) 1 bottle prosecco, cava, or champagne Cut the watermelon and blend thoroughly, pass the watermelon juice through a fine mesh sieve. Reserve the juice and chill. Make sure the sparkling wine is very cold and put your glasses in the fridge for 10 to 15 minutes before serving. Fill champagne flutes halfway with the wine and then top with the watermelon juice, leaving some room at the top. Cheers! AUGUST 2019 | SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA 71

Samantha Whitney:

Medicine Woman of the Salish Sea by Paula Kully how long have you been operating in Sidney? That's a big question and a long story! The short answer is, I've been operating in Sidney for 12 years. I began at the SHOAL Centre but things grew too big and there was a lack of room to keep up. I moved into the space I'm in now, at #333 - 2453 Beacon Avenue, three years ago. I have always had a passion for massage. In fact, it really started when I was only two years old. At family gatherings, I greeted people at the door, brought them in, and

Yet, she creates balance and calm in her own world as well as her clients' through her love, passion and belief that massage can prevent and cure illness and help us live longer happier lives. This is what I discovered about Stem to Stern and the superwoman who runs it. What prompted you to get into massage and

seated them. Then, it seemed the most natural thing in the world to walk behind them and start massaging their shoulders. What sort of training do you and your staff have? My parents saw that I had a gift for massage and enrolled me in massage college when I was 15. From there I went on to get my BA in massage therapy and have been practising now for over 30 years. When I was five, I fell and broke my back. However, it wasn't diagnosed until I had a

child. Then, the old injury manifested and I couldn't walk for a period of time. I was told I wouldn't be able to massage anymore – I was devastated. That is when I discovered whole-body chair massage. I wrote a manual and taught for six years all over Victoria and Vancouver. Whole-body chair massage is designed for seniors and considers issues specific to them. I provide both table and chair massage and have other accredited modalities while continuously updating my training. Hilary Davidson-Sparks is the Massage Specialist at Stem to Stern. She is a certified registered member of the Natural Health Practitioners of Canada and specializes in aromatherapy, craniosacral therapy and shiatsu. What is the difference between a Massage Specialist and a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT)?

Massage Specialists practise many different modalities of massage. For example lymphatic, hot stones, reflexology etc. An RMT is trained to fix medical issues that are a result of

deep massage. We see people who want to balance their wellness and most come weekly. Our rooms are designed to calm. They are heated, scent-free and mobility friendly. What keeps you motivated in your work? I believe in it so much; I believe massage can keep disease out of the body as it removes stress which is one of the biggest killers. My mother died unexpectedly last year on the Power Paddle to Puyallup. She went on all the canoe journies, and Elder Chief Eugene Harry (XIQuelem) from the Cowichan Tribe officially gave her the name Medicine Woman of the Salish during her celebration Journey; Tribal Canoe Journey for the search for medical plants. Traditionally, this name is passed down four generations which means it passed to me. I have officially taken on my mom's history and power and intend to honour her through my work. dysfunctional family struggling through a truly dysfunctional week. Billed as a black comedy, the novel's cast is the Westfall family: mother and father, plus three disaffected adult kids. Despite the blurb on the back cover though, of the large group at our July meeting not many admitted to finding much humour in the book. In fact there were pretty mixed reviews from all of those who had read it. The first part of the book, where we meet each of the family members in turn and learn how they've each got to their own point of breakdown, established the themes well. Set against a backdrop of an apocalyptic storm heading towards New York, there is lots of drama. As dad nears death, each of the other family members is spinning out of control, and we reach a point of complete chaos. The storm makes a great setting and the descriptions of the weather worsening and the brothers striking out in it to reach home (or get away from it) were some of the strongest scenes. There's a financial crisis, a marriage breakdown, a child expelled from preschool, death, unrequited love and some pretty deep family wounds to deal with. Not to mention the family dog seems to be sick. Our readers thought the way the characters interacted with each other was pretty accurate, displaying authentic husband/wife, brother/brother-in-law, and sibling connections that we could all relate to. The trouble was that all the characters were so unlikeable. D'Agnostino especially seemed to have a hard time with women. His descriptions of the female characters were reductive and suggested either a young author, or an immature one. One member suggested that it was like a "made-for-Netflix movie, with lots of contemporary scenes played for drama and/or laughs," and we agreed that we could see this as a movie. In fact we felt that perhaps we already had seen this as a movie – it felt like a tired plot with nothing new to deliver. Even though many didn't really enjoy the book we certainly had a good time discussing it! Thanks to everyone who came along and shared their opinions. Next month we are heading into mystery territory with Thomas King's Cold Skies. We'll meet on Wednesday, August 14 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Sidney/North Saanich Library. WORD

Sometimes when you're travelling, the route you take and the sights you see along the way come second to the actual journey you are on. That is about the connections you make, the people you visit, the time you take for family and yourself and to just breathe. You learn things about your travelling companions and rekindle affection for distant relatives … it's so much more than just a holiday. I took one such "holiday" recently with my family – a trip that was a simple "hello again" in many instances but scarily felt like it might be goodbye in another. It was planned quite last minute – with summer in full swing and nothing on the calendar yet for time spent seeing our Alberta relatives, we carved out a few days and planned a whirlwind adventure that would encompass both Calgary and Red Deer. My partner, daughter, stepdaughter and I piled into our truck and began the 13-hour drive to Alberta late one night. We worried that putting a preschooler and a teenager side by side in a back seat – and then together almost 24/7 for the remainder of the trip – may not have been our brightest idea, but other than a few bumps along the way (both

literally and figuratively) things worked out OK and the two girls grew closer in a way they never have the chance to at home. After an all-night drive we spent a bleary-eyed day in Calgary visiting various loved ones, one more night on spare beds and then we were off to Red Deer. When we arrived, we found out that a family member was very ill, and all plans went out the window. We called home, made arrangements to extend our time away and deleted from our "Must Do" list, instead adding to it things like talk, laugh, reminisce and just be together. Things became slower and simpler over the next several days, and our visit simply became about spending precious time together. We left Red Deer with many tears and tight hugs, our time together over. It's unclear how the journey will end, but our time spent on it has resulted in more memories than a holiday ever could.
