Creativity has been a huge component of my life since before I can remember. My art process has woven through hand drawings and paintings, to design and computer graphics, and back again. My position at Seaside allows me to explore the relationship between traditional and computer generated art media, and how they can have a symbiotic relationship. It is an honour for one of my paintings to appear on the cover of this month’s issue, and I can feel the support of the community with the many big art shows and events taking place in October on the peninsula. See more of my art at www.kelseyartonline.com and catch me in the Fall Studio Tour on October 24 – 25 at 2113 Henry Avenue, Sidney.

I grew up working in the clothing industry and I consider myself very fortunate to work with my Dad everyday, doing what we love! Our mission is to have a great selection of sportswear for men, product that you don't see everywhere, and to offer honest service helping gentleman make good investments in building a wardrobe that suits their lifestyle. From my perspective the essentials of building a wardrobe are the same for men and women, so it was my honour to provide a write up for the launch of the new fashion focus series in Seaside.

As a Naturopathic doctor, I have the pleasure of helping people navigate life's choices, so they can feel vibrant and healthy. I believe that truly great health begins with education and identifying the root cause of disease. Being able to share my passion for stress management through my clinical practice, writing articles and lecturing and watching people make positive changes in their lives is the greatest gift I can offer. My role as a Health and Physical Activity Counsellor allows me to work with individuals of all ages who are in need of extra support in their pursuit of overall health and well-being. My clients and I work together to develop a plan for an active lifestyle, which involves setting goals, getting motivated, and addressing psychological barriers such as stress. See this month's Inside Out column (pg. 61) as Marita and I share some insights into stress management.

I was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba and completed a Commercial and Industrial Sales & Marketing Program at Red River Community College. I moved to Vancouver at the age of 20 and began a career in advertising sales with Maclean Hunter, Pacific Yachting Magazine. I travelled on business once a month to Vancouver Island which led me to my husband, Kevin. I moved to Victoria to marry at the age of 27. I have two wonderful grown-up children, Alex and Graham. I have always had a love for the country and locally produced food, I think it's the prairie girl in me! I'm happy to help celebrate the spirit of business enterprise with Seaside this month, sharing the story of the Deep Cove Market in my introduction to the Small Business special feature (pg 12).

first word If there's such a thing as a 'sales gene' I was definitely born with it. From my earliest days I loved persuading people to buy what I had to sell. First it was lemonade. Then, to what was probably the chagrin of my whole neighborhood, when I was about eight it was Girl Guide cookies. My father worked for CIP (Canadian International Paper) and my mother was a traditional stay-at-home mom, raising my two sisters, brother and me. Dad's company was based out of Montreal, so I'd see him coming and going from trips, suitcase in hand, and I would dream about what kind of adventures he must be having on the road. My father worked hard, and he kept working no matter what hardships he faced. I like to think I'm similar to my Dad in certain ways – our shared passion for business, drive to succeed, and persistence. I'd like to think that if I ever faced the kind of adversity he did, I'd respond with a real dedication to overcoming it. My father truly was an inspiration to me, in many ways. I'm telling you this because these facts form the roots of
Sunday Brunch Buffet $20
whatever success I've had, in business and life. When I look back at my childhood, high school and university years, it's clear how I can trace the interests and inclinations that later shaped my professional life. Think about it: if you plan on working 40-hour weeks from age 20-65 you'll be spending about 90,000 hours of your life at your job. For that reason alone, you owe it to yourself to figure out something you really enjoy doing. Besides, if you're doing something you enjoy, I think you'll be better at it. I get asked a lot: 'Don't you ever just want to get away from the magazine business for a while? When you go on vacation, do you run past magazine stands so you don't have to think about them?" The question struck me funny, because I absolutely love magazines and I almost never go anywhere without a tote full of them! As I write this, I think about our community, the place I call home. We are surrounded by a business community that thrives to be the best of the best in their field. In this issue of Seaside Magazine we are celebrating 'Small Business' just for that reason. It's all for you. So, take a minute or two and get to know some of the people in your community, those people that aspire to give you the best. Remember, it's not about whether you can do it all, it's about whether you can be happy whatever you're doing!

Juried Art Show Returns for 13th Year at the Mary Winspear Centre A highlight of Vancouver Island's cultural calendar takes place in Sidney from Friday October 16 – 18, and promises to continue a tradition of showcasing excellence. The Sidney Fine Art Show (SFAS), now in its thirteenth year, is one of the largest and most anticipated juried art shows in British Columbia. Produced by the Community Arts Council of the Saanich Peninsula (CACSP), it showcases the best of the region's fine art, while providing a significant economic boost to the region. This year, the show features seven master artists: Noah Layne, Craig Benson, Tara Juneau, Clement Kwan, Leonard Butt, Marion Evamy and Stephanie Steele. This group of artists has been presented with a SFAS major prize at least twice, and are in the running for a prize for best master's work. The show begins Friday night with an Opening Night Gala Reception for Sponsors and Patrons, who have the first opportunity to view and purchase the artwork chosen for the show. An awards ceremony follows in the Charlie White Theatre. Prizes are awarded in categories including "Best in Show" and "Best 3-Dimensional". Art show chair and show designer Sandy Bligh said 441 artists submitted one or more works, including oil and watercolour, photography, sculpture, woodworking, fine jewelry and glass and ceramic art, which were judged over a two-day period in September. All of the pieces in the show are for sale, ranging from small prints in the $350 range to more imposing pieces from master artists. Bligh is one of the over 300 volunteers who dedicate their time
each year. As the Show Designer, Sandy creates the look and layout of the show, so that it provides a welcoming and easy-to-follow flow throughout the gallery space. "My goal in designing the show is to welcome and engage people with the art; inviting them to move through the exhibit by organizing the works in a way that allows each piece to make an individual statement while at the same time blending them within an aesthetically exciting and pleasing grouping." The daunting task of selecting and judging from more than 1,100 entries the 400 pieces of fine art to be displayed in the 2015 show, falls to three highly qualified jurists. Nick Tuele, is former Curator at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Sara Genn, New York-based artist and Anne Hudec, an award-winning watercolour artist and Senior Signature member (SFCA) of the Federation of Canadian Artists. There are two special evening events at the show from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday night is Celebrate Local Night: savour the best of local art while sipping on Saanich Peninsula wines and ciders, and sampling wonderful island-made cheeses and charcuterie. Saturday night is Meet the Artists Night with participating artists in attendance. Admission at the door is $6 per day or $10 for a three-day pass (children 12 and under are free). Hours are Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. To become a patron and experience the exclusive gala and pre-sale, see the show website: www.sidneyfineartshow.ca/patrons. For anyone interested in the best fine art of this highly artistic region of British Columbia, this art show is not to be missed! SEASIDE | OCTOBER 2015 | WWW.SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA 11

2015 Your Life. Your Passion. Take a Leap.
There's no question that owning your own business is a risky proposition. But, with risk comes reward. In our annual Focus on Small Business special issue, we look at some of the amazing entrepreneurs who have chosen the Saanich Peninsula as home for their small business. These people work tirelessly to share a product or service with their neighbours and community and Seaside Magazine is happy to share their stories on the following pages.
Starting a business is like jumping out of an airplane without a parachute. In mid-air, the entrepreneur begins building a parachute and hopes it opens before hitting the ground. Rich Dad

n A Small Business
at the Heart of the Community by Rosemary Scott
The Deep Cove Market is
not your typical convenience store. A destination for foodies, it's a charming country market nestled in North Saanich that has become, through much hard work, a gem of a meeting place for the community. After the Deep Cove Farm on Wain Road was retired, I wanted to provide locals like myself with a place to meet over breakfast, lunch or lattes and have a place to shop that supports our local farming community. Having lived in the community for over 20 years I felt local consumers deserved to be offered something better. From spring through fall, the market supplies the community with bountiful local produce. If you want locally raised lamb, beef, poultry and eggs, it's a place worth visiting. 10 years ago, with no grocery experience whatsoever, I decided to take on the rather daunting task of breathing new life into this little rundown store. As my first real business venture it was very difficult getting started, in part because the previous owner removed all the supplier files. With the help of family members I basically had to start from scratch. We closed the market for two weeks to renovate and I remember when we re-opened, the shelves looked bare! I shed a few tears in those first few weeks and felt very overwhelmed. Through attending many food and gift shows the market has grown into a unique collection of interesting finds. With a small retail footprint to work with, the Deep Cove Market boasts an incredible selection of local, import and specialty food and gift
items. It has taken a lot of investment thanks to my husband Kevin and a tremendous amount of hard work with my sister Joanne at my side. One of the big challenges in running a small business on the Peninsula is staying competitive in pricing with so many larger stores and chains available to consumers. One way I try to counter that is by offering things that you just can't find in larger stores. I'm a shopper and foodie at heart and running this country market has certainly been rewarding. It was a dream come true to find a business that I could be very passionate about! If you are not passionate and enthusiastic about starting your new business, it will be a much harder road to success. I credit my dedicated staff who have become more like extended family than employees for making the market such a memorable place to visit. Finding staff has fortunately always been easy for me; there always seem to be numerous resumes on hand from local students. What helps me keep my staff is being flexible with their schedules to accommodate their extracurricular activities. For many this is their first experience at a job, and it has been a real pleasure watching them blossom with confidence and work ethic. Treating your staff with kindness and respect goes a long way too! Without the amazing support this community has given us, we could not have become such a success. I hope the Deep Cove Market will continue to be a focal point for the community for many years. It will be interesting to see who might come along with enough energy and passion to take it to the next level! SEASIDE | OCTOBER 2015 | WWW.SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA 13

common cents Small Business How to (Really) know your target audience It's not easy to figure out who
by Erin Brocklebank Brand Strategist
you need to talk to when it comes to your business. Think about the problem your business solves, then think about who would benefit from your solution. Sounds simple enough, but even the biggest brands in the world struggle to nail this down. One thing is certain, if you have your audience wrong, you have everything wrong.
It's never everyone A good place to start is to realize that your business's audience isn't everyone. In your quest to be everything to everyone, you'll likely end up achieving nothing memorable for your ideal prospect – especially when you're working with a limited marketing and advertising budget. That said, the people you really want to talk to are the ones who are most likely to buy your product or to influence someone else to buy your product. List every single type of customer who needs your product or service, why they want it and how they use it. If you find this difficult, think in terms of who wouldn't use it or who your customer is not. Look at your list and try to find commonalities in how and why they use your product. Be empathetic Now dig a little deeper. Be empathetic when you think of your audience – this means considering and identifying with your customers' feelings, thoughts and attitudes. How do your customers really feel about your brand? Consider any barriers that might keep them from buying and using your product. Who do they trust and what do they believe in? Remember to always think about if from your customer's point of view, not from your own. Create a Customer Persona Based on your discovery and findings, create a Customer Persona for your brand – a made-up person that represents your ideal buyer. Think of it as a way to centralize a broader target. This will help you really get to know your audience as a person, and not just as a group based on demographics and psychographics. Spend some time considering your Customer Persona – give her a name, an age, a job, outline her lifestyle, imagine her house, her family, and interests. The next time you make any decisions about your business and your product, consider how your ideal Customer Persona would feel about it. Once you really know who you need to talk to and what you want to say, get your message out there. Giving the right customer a reason to believe you're the answer is the basis of a great advertising campaign – and a successful business! For more information www.holycowcom.com

at the Mary Winspear Centre Tyler Shaw
Tyler Shaw was just 13 when he discovered an old guitar underneath his staircase; he also discovered his life’s passion. Having never taken a professional music lesson, Tyler developed his love and talent for performance on his own, and has drawn inspiration from a wide range of artists including John Mayer, Michael Bublé, and The Script. Now 22 years old, this Coquitlam, B.C. native has gone from fooling around with a set of secondhand strings to signing a major record deal with Sony Music Canada, two certified Gold records, two Top 10 radio smash singles, and the release of his first full length album this summer! Heading from one end of the country to the other, Tyler enrolled as a student at the University of PEI, and it was here where his dorm friends encouraged him to submit some of his YouTube videos to MuchMusic’s Coca-Cola’s Covers competition. His talent took him to the top and Tyler was chosen as the 2012 winner from over 13,000 submissions. His triumph was broadcast live from the MuchMusic Video Awards stage in June, 2012.
Fast forward to November of the same year and Tyler released his own original single Kiss Goodnight to radio across the country. The romantic pop jam is a co-write by Shaw, about having a night to remember. Kiss Goodnight became a gold selling single, helping Shaw to land opening slots on select Canadian shows with artists including Ke$ha and Pitbull. Additionally, his track Showtime was adopted as the official song for the 2014 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Canada. This fall Tyler Shaw will head out on a Canadian tour opening for pop powerhouse Kelly Clarkson and special guest Nick Jonas. The Mary Winspear Centre is proud to present Tyler Shaw with special guest Kate Morgan on Sunday, October 18 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the box office 250-656-0275 or online at marywinspear.ca

Finger Eleven has been creating award-winning music for 19 years, making them one of Canada’s most recognized and celebrated rock bands. Their most popular hits One Thing and Paralyzer both received platinum status and exposure on TV shows such as Gossip Girl and Smallville. With five albums to their name they have held top spots on radio charts across North America and continue to create award-winning music. Sidney will be Finger Eleven’s only Vancouver Island stop on their Fall of The Hammer Tour. Back with their first studio album since 2010, Five Crooked Lines entered the top 10 of both the Alternative and Hard Music charts. The album’s first single Wolves and Lines is currently in the top 5 of the Mainstream Rock charts. Finger Eleven is armed with their familiar, aggressive sound, reminiscent of their original vibe, eager to share their new music with their fans. As an exciting addition to this Halloween party we are holding a contest to find a local opening band. The top five video submissions will be sent to Finger Eleven, and the winner chosen by the band will open the show with a 20 minute set. island life if they don't travel regularly by ferry, they can treat the occasion as a mini-cruise, where cruise fares apply
The Attraction of Islands by Barry Mathias
With the falling dollar, more
tourists are drawn to the varied attractions of the Islands rather than to the vivid publicity of Rio de Payout or Immensa Costa; and they dream of returning home with unspent money languishing in their bank accounts. While this is, in theory, a possibility, the numerous pleasant ways to spend money on these fortunate Islands make this highly unlikely. Potential tourists look at brochures and on-line advertisements that portray dreamy coves, lush forests, the chance of outdoor pursuits and intimate bistros … and no great distances to travel. "No costly air fares!" they chant. "Think of the savings!" It is at this point that amnesia takes over, and they conveniently forget about ferry costs. After all, if they don't travel regularly by ferry, they can treat the occasion as a mini-cruise, where cruise fares apply, but without the use of a cabin. Sometimes, the Captain will obligingly announce: "Whales on the port side!" Once the excited travellers have worked out which side he means, the whales have passed, but they have enjoyed a closeup experience with the heaving bodies of other travellers that is so reminiscent of a Tokyo subway, they could be in the Orient. After an interesting drive along meandering roads that were former logging tracks, past the perspiring cyclists walking their bikes up challenging hills, they arrive at their chosen destinations and plan their vacations. Visiting local galleries is a must, where the artistry of the Islands is reflected in the unique vitality and the spontaneity of the work, and where the prices reflect the quality of the art and not the cost of the gallery's rental. They can easily forget the limited wall space in their homes as they succumb to temptation. There is also the opportunity to do those things that are not done at home. Horse riding is always fun to contemplate: those romantic rides into the sunset; the magical ability of being able to instantly regain the equestrian skills one apparently possessed as a child, and the wondrous, instant relationship with a huge almost-mythical creature that somehow knows you're a friend. The reality of torrential rain, two hours bouncing on a hard saddle and a nag that wants to bite your leg suggests that, as with all things, prior experience is useful. Kayaking is very popular, and the Islands provide a wealth of
spectacular vistas, memorable experiences and the chance to test one's long dormant physical abilities. Remembering how to get into the kayak is always advisable, and those who pretend to knowledge they don't have can create spandex-creasing hilarity among other paddlers and the barely concealed annoyance of the guide. On muddy beaches this can be particularly dramatic. However, after two hours of youthful paddling, it is amazing how ones muscles yearn for dry land … of course, there is always the getting out. Finally, there are the unique coffee bars and memorable restaurants that dot the landscape of these Islands. In these famed caffeine hideaways and revered eating houses, where the word fresh is a truism, and fishcopy.pdf are only moments out of the ocean, seaside 1 12/05/2015 8:32:39 PM one can understand the overwhelming attraction of Islands.

Of Hairspray & Hurricanes by Steve Sakiyama
While my wife
and I were flying to New York City via Toronto, our connecting flight was cancelled due to high winds and a hurricane alert at the Big Apple. This meant we were stranded overnight in Toronto along with hundreds of others who shared our predicament. Crowds of tired travellers flooded the airport bus pick-up area and waited for their hotel shuttles. And waited ... As we huddled in the cold and dark, I chatted with a financial advisor from New York City. He was in Toronto for ... trapeze lessons. Really? People do this? As we joked about the similarities between

high finance on Wall Street and high wire flying, an elderly woman tugged on my arm. In her shaking hand was a note with "Delta" scribbled on it. "Don't worry," I said as we gingerly maneuvered her through the milling crowds to the Delta Hotel shuttle. When the doors opened she had a sudden burst of energy and jumped into it like an excited child entering the gates of Disneyworld. After her shuttle faded into the night, we met a fellow from Cincinnati who looked like a dark-haired version of John Candy. "Come here often?" he asked. "Only during hurricanes," my wife replied, "by the way, what do people from Cincinnati pack for a hurricane?" "We bring a lot of hairspray," he said with an impish grin. Our hotel shuttle finally arrived but for some unknown reason my wife and I were not allowed to board. Mr. Cincinnati yelled over the din of traffic, "Didn't you get the secret password??" He squeezed past us into the shuttle, pressed his face against the window and slowly mouthed the words, "secret password … secret password!" Speaking of high winds, the intense storms we can experience here on the B.C. coast are called "mid-latitude cyclones". We live in the mid-latitude region of the globe, and it is frequented by cold air from the north and warm air from the south. When these cold and warm air masses meet the resulting horizontal temperature contrast creates the driving energy for the storm. This meteorological "meet and greet" occurs frequently during the winter. It creates a low pressure centre, different types of fronts and winds that can pack a punch. So will the late fall and winter be dark and stormy? It looks like the El Nino currently in place along the equatorial Pacific will reach out and tug on the sleeve of our weather here. As a result the long range outlook tilts the odds in favour of a warmer and drier than normal fall for the South Island. As we step into this month, write "October" on a piece of paper and show it to family, friends and even complete strangers waiting at bus stops. During this month of harvest, ask them to help you celebrate the many things we have to be thankful for. Let them take you to October, so you can step through its open doors and be carried away into a wonderland of natural beauty that surrounds us. Weatherwit. Exist-entialism - Exist Hairworx Sam Quinn and Yvonne Campbell, stylists and owners at Exist Hairworx in Sidney, want you to know that they are two women who don't take themselves too seriously. Which isn't to say that they aren't serious about their work – they are. They just have a lot of fun and many laughs in the course of business. They have the best jobs in the world, as far as they are concerned. "We get to play with hair all day, and get paid for it," says Yvonne jovially. "All of our clients turn into friends, so in essence, we're with our friends, listening to music and drinking coffee all day." The sentiment makes me smile. Their recent move to Seaport Place was an opportunity Sam and Yvonne couldn't pass up, after 15 years in the original location – seven under their co-ownership. They feel extremely fortunate to have come into the building just in time to see the revitalization of the neighborhood. Though they're still getting used to their new location, they look forward to taking advantage of all this spot has to offer. Views of the sail-past, fireworks and events they hope to plan in conjunction with their neighbours on either side: Sarah, at The Surly Mermaid, and Bill, at the Rumrunner.
"This salon is like Cheers," says Sam. I can tell that it really characterizes what goes on here, perhaps also reminiscent of a scene from Steel Magnolias. Everybody knows everybody else, and people come in to say "Hi" and chat with their 'therapists,' even if they aren't getting their hair done. "It's like a sisterhood." They see many women, of course, and Yvonne makes me laugh when she says, "We're all doing the same thing. We're in the 'grey' category. We're women in, or approaching, our 40s, wanting to cover grey but still be ontrend and current." All that said, don't be deterred, men. They love you too! If you are new to the salon in general, or haven't yet visited the new location, there are a few things to know. In the way of products, they carry Moroccan Oil (including the body line, of which they are exclusive carriers), Joico, and ColorProof. Waxing and nail services are now available in-house with Talia Sandsmark, of Blush Esthetics. Very importantly, there is the ever-constant parking question. Exist has three, free designated spots in the pay lot outside, but there is also free parking on the street and beneath the Pier Hotel. The new website is up and running, so watch for updates on styles and trends, along with some fun anecdotes. I personally love the Meet the Team page. Visit www.existhairworx.com. Exist is located at #1-C Seaport Place. To book an appointment, call 250.656.2321.

Your
Invest in yourself‌
in Downtown
by Erin Bremner
There is one great
recommendation from the 2015 Vogue trend report that really stood out to me: the importance of a great white shirt. For both men and women, it's a wardrobe staple. If you don't have one, or if yours is looking a little tired, it's time to go shopping! But let's face it, most of us in Sidney are less concerned with what's in fashion, and more interested in functionality. That doesn't mean we can't create an individual style of practical clothing that is current, ageappropriate and interesting. The most important place to start is with your wardrobe essentials, then you can add seasonal elements for fun! Wardrobe essentials are worth spending a little more on than you might usually be comfortable with. These are pieces that you'll likely keep for a long time (and therefore you should follow the washing instructions carefully). We all have enough for around the house and formal occasions, but that in-between look is what most people have a hard time shopping for. For both men and women, the smart casual must-haves include that great white shirt or blouse, a pair of dark wash dress jeans (yes, dress jeans are a thing), and a jacket (think blazer for over the white shirt, with the dark jeans). These essentials can take you almost anywhere. Fit is the other critical element. More often than not, folks need to have garments tailored. Whether it be sleeves shortened or a pant hemmed, don't be afraid to build a relationship with someone who
knows that art. Let the staff in the shops help you! We are so fortunate to have a great variety of family-run businesses in Sidney where staff members are knowledgeable about their product and willing to offer you honest help. Most of us treat our stores like we do our homes, and I don't think you would walk into someone's home without smiling and saying hello would you? It can be very rewarding getting to know the names of the staff in the stores you shop at regularly. They tend to remember your previous purchases and can suggest new products you might be interested in! Creating style is the personal part, and there are choices out there for everyone: whether you like to express yourself with lots of colour, texture and pattern or neutral and monochromatic combinations. For the gentleman, your belt and shoes are great accent pieces to reflect your personality. Ladies may prefer to liven things up with jewellery, a scarf and handbag. Building a wardrobe of versatile and interchangeable outfits is a much better investment than having a closet full of pieces. As Kim Bremner always advises, if you are picking up just one piece, think of three other things in your closet to wear with it before you make that purchase. Invest in yourself, you deserve it! At any age or phase of life, it's amazing what a few good pieces of clothing can do for your confidence.

Enjoy a Wine Cruise Close to Home with Un-Cruise Adventures by Suzanne Morphet
If you think you need
to go to Europe to enjoy a river cruise with fine wineries, spectacular vistas, and rich history, you're mistaken. You need only go to Portland, Oregon. That's where I climbed aboard the SS Legacy for a week-long cruise that takes in four rivers, nine wineries and countless moments of swirling and sipping. While the Legacy – a replica coastal steamer – waits for us near The Bridge of the Gods on day two, we discover why grapes have joined apples, pears and cherries on the fertile slopes of the

Columbia River Gorge. "What's unique about the Gorge is the variation in climate, altitude, aspect and soil," explains Carey Kienitz, the winemaker at Springhouse Cellar, as we taste a flight of his whites and reds amidst the Romanesque ruins of this former pear cannery and distillery. Further up the road, Mt. Hood Winery is making a name for itself beyond the Gorge. "Their ice wine was one of the five top wines out of 1,600 wines at the Great Northwest Wine Competition in 2015," says Steven Sinkler, a wine expert who's accompanying us on this maiden wine cruise with Un-Cruise Adventures. Later, we cross the storied Columbia River that Lewis and Clark paddled to the Pacific more than 200 years ago. At AniChe Cellars, we sit within earshot of clucking chickens and savour crisp white and complex red blends made by the all-female winemaking team. Back on board, we join Steve in the lounge to talk and taste yet more wine. "The finest wines in the world are blended wines," Steve tells us, swirling a glass of red and comparing AniChe's Seven Gables to blends from France's famed Châteauneuf-du-Pape Appellation, where one wine can have up to 13 varietals. "She has seven of these grapes," Steve enthuses. "This is a $125 bottle of wine selling for $26 … a spectacular value." And so our cruise progresses, our small group of wine enthusiasts visiting wineries by day and learning by night, as we move ever eastward. By our third day the landscape changes to arid plateaus and basalt rock formations that are blacker than the blackened scallops we enjoy for dinner one night. At Walla Walla, Steve tells us "we're basically in Bordeaux". With more than 150 wineries, the town that was once famous for sweet onions has been named one of the top ten wine regions in the world. On our return down the Columbia Valley there's time for more wineries and a visit to the Maryhill Museum of Art. By week's end we've learned to sip and swirl like a pro, but my friend Julie and I still can't pick out those flavours of black cherry and plum and cedar and everything else that oenophiles rave about. At our last wine tasting Julie throws up her hands. "Who cares anyway?" she asks peevishly. I laugh and buy a bottle to take home. I may not know a Merlot from a Malbec, but I know a good cruise when I've had one, and this one has been – as Steve would say – "spectacular". See Ameritage! When we come to buy a house, most of us have already decided where we want to live, and how much we might be able to afford. However, we quickly find out that there are many more aspects to be considered, and the same applies

when we come to sell our home: we are confronted with major decisions as to what price to charge, where to advertise and what pitfalls must be avoided. This is why we need professional realtors. With the housing market looking strong as we move into fall 2015 both buyers and sellers will have many questions. "A total of 741 properties were sold in the Victoria Real Estate Board region this August compared to 609 properties in the same month in 2014," says Guy Crozier of Remax Camosun. Guy is the current President of the Victoria Real Estate Board (VREB), founded in 1921, which represents over 1,200 realtors, and is a key player in the development of standards and innovative programs to enhance their professionalism. "We have a Government Liaison Committee that helps respond to issues that affect home owners," (an example would be the problem of underground oil tanks) "and a continuing education program that requires all realtors to take industry courses every two years." The VREB is also concerned with the constant improvement and expansion of the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) among the 100 Boards throughout Canada. "However, it is The Real Estate Council, established in 1958 by the provincial government, that is the regulatory agency for the industry," he explains. The Council is responsible for licensing individuals and brokerages, and enforcing entry qualifications and investigating complaints. Guy notes that throughout July there was an increase in sales and a decline in the VREB listings. "The market is going through its typical summer cycle, but what is exciting is seeing the overall change in the real estate market in the last twelve months," he says. "The latest August statistics show an increase from 16.9% in total sales in this area in July to 21.7% this month." Single family home sales have surged to their highest number since August 2007, while total active listings are 14.6% fewer than August
Harbour Landing new designer homes priced from the high $500,000s
2014. During the same time period there has been an increase of 6.5% in the Multiple Listing Service's Home Price Index benchmark value for a single family home on the Peninsula, raising it to $557,100 from $523,300. "Consumer confidence remains very strong and shows no sign of lessening," Guy says. "There are ongoing subtle changes to the housing market," Guy explains. He gives as an example Sidney's gradual densification over the last 20 years. "There is an acceptance of smaller dwellings close to the town centre, approximately 800 at the present time, and this goes handin-hand with improved architectural designs and modern furnishings and appliances." This also applies to many village centres that are 'walkable' areas, encouraging neighborhoods to develop with less emphasis on the car. "Many people are moving towards this concept." Guy emphasizes that Sidney is no different from other centres as regards the pressures of growth. "With increased population comes the need for more schools, extended care facilities etc. In the past, the Victoria and Saanich regions may have tended to attract mainly retirees, but now
attracts a wide variety of ages and skills." When demand for housing exceeds supply, the result is higher prices. "From 2009 to 2014, we saw a downward price correction in every segment of the Victoria market, but over the last twelve months we've seen almost all of that come back, which has really exceeded our expectations for 2015." Adding to this optimistic picture is an announcement by the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). "Starting at the end of September, buyers who have less than a 20 percent deposit will, when they apply for mortgage loan insurance from the CMHC, be allowed to include 100 percent of the projected income from secondary suites," says Guy. "A change like this may buoy the market through the fall and winter." Another realtor, also at Remax, is Georgia Wiggins who, with her husband Tim, has just received the President's Award from the VREB. This is only awarded to realtors who have achieved either a gold or silver award through the Board for 10 out of 13 years. She explained an interesting recent phenomenon: "Chinese buyers have pushed the Benchmark price for a detached home in West Vancouver to $2,653,000! Many of those who are selling are coming to the Victoria area and are purchasing our high end real estate and banking the difference. They are also ending up with nicer homes due to the price differential." Georgia was able to supply me with the 2014 details of who is buying in this region, and in the 'Out-of-Town' category, 22% came from Alberta, and 20% of B.C buyers came from Vancouver. "My prediction is that when the 2015 statistics SEASIDE HOMES | OCTOBER 2015 | WWW.SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA 43

The Real Estate Market is complex, for example: "Condo prices were down by 8% over last year while sales of condos were up, and townhome prices were 3.8% up but numbers of units sold was down by 6.2%" Georgia observes. "This reflects the upward movement of younger buyers into single family dwellings in the $450,000 – $550,000 range." She notes that large numbers of retirees are moving into the area, and that many of the young first-time buyers are relying on parents to help with the initial down payment. "One of the most difficult properties to acquire is a rancher in Sidney." I ask her what makes a good realtor. "Experience matters," she replies. "The realtor has to genuinely care about the client, and do everything possible to net them top dollars for their home. This takes time and money, but is a critical aspect of maximizing the selling price." Georgia explains that, when she feels it necessary, she will hire a 'stager'. This is an expert who will improve the look of a house by getting rid of

"A well-priced house should sell within a three month period," she says, "and real estate should be seen as an important investment." "You have to be a people person to work in real estate," BATHROOM Holly Critchison agrees. Holly is the office manager at ESSENTIALS Newport Realty. "This is our first year open here in Sidney. I understand all our sales associates have been experiencing a very good year." While acknowledging "The Sidney/Saanich Peninsula continues to be a destination for retirees, a constant over the years," she says there have been some welcome changes. "The addition of some family orientated developments, as well as changes to the OCP (Official Community Plan) relaxing the regulations for secondary suites and multi-family developments (duplexes etc.), has opened the market up for younger people a little bit." But, she makes the point: "It's still a challenge for many young folk to live in this area." One development in recent years has been the way that buyers approach searching for a new home. "The consumers are becoming more educated, having more information, and getting the information instantly. It can be a challenge when a buyer calls you wanting to see a property they heard of before you did. It used to be that a realtor was the holder of all the information in the form of our magic 'MLS catalogue', nowadays the public have nearly as much information as the realtors do." "The realtors in this office deal with the full spectrum of real estate from new construction to humble homes to palatial estates, it's ever changing." Holly smiles: "I find most realtors don't select it as a career, it sort of selects you."

weather is actually quite mild, it's still cold and wet enough to damage your lawn if it's not being properly cared for and prepared for the winter weather. Here are few suggestions for winterizing your lawn on the Saanich Peninsula. Mow Your Lawn by Cam McLennan For the final cut of the year choose a Island Pro Mowing & Landscaping Inc. dry day in September or October and mow the lawn about an inch shorter than you normally would in the summer. Cutting it slightly shorter will help improve air flow and encourage root growth. Ideally you want to complete your final mow on a dry day so if you mulch instead of bagging your clippings they can be left on the lawn and won't be all clumped up. Large, wet clumps of grass and organic material will suffocate the grass below it causing ugly, brown patchy sections. Raking Up Leaves and Debris While leaves and other organic material can usually be mulched with your lawn mower, if there are a lot of leaves you'll want to rake them up and remove them from the lawn. Too much organic material on top of your lawn will create an environment for disease and other harmful organisms that can attack your healthy lawn. A lawn that has been raked of all debris looks much cleaner and improves your curb appeal too. Lawn Fertilization Autumn is generally the best time to fertilize your lawn as the grass will be slowing its upward growth and instead focusing on its root system and the storing of nutrients and sugars for the cold months ahead. Keeping your grass well fertilized with a mixture rich in Nitrogen and Potassium will go a long way to ensuring you have a lush, green healthy lawn next spring. Lawn Aeration Healthy grass can grow very thick and without aeration of the soil, the roots below won't be able to get the oxygen and nutrients they need to thrive. Aerating your lawn involves the use of special equipment that pokes circular holes into your lawn a few inches deep. The "plugs" of lawn that are removed can either be raked up or left on the lawn as a type of mulch. By reducing the soil compaction and removing any excess thatch from your lawn you'll ensure your lawn can get the nutrients it needs. Don't neglect your lawn this winter. If you want beautiful, lush green grass next spring then give your lawn a great chance by ensuring it's winterized and ready for the cold, wet months coming up. For more information www.islandpro.ca
on design Prepping a House For Sale With an Eye For Design How does design matter when preparing your house for sale? Well, if the preparation of your home is done with skill and an eye for design you should sell faster and for more money. It's that simple. After 25 years experience one thing we know for sure is that if we can get a buyers emotions going and they can picture themselves in your home then we are that much closer to a sale. This combined with targeted marketing and experienced negotiation should result in a successful sale, a happy seller and buyer. Following are a few pointers on how to prep a house and turn it into an irresistible and marketable home. When perspective buyers walk through your home, you want them to imagine it as if it were their own. You can help this by presenting a clean, clutter-free environment. The old adage LESS IS MORE couldn't be more relevant! Pack up your personal photographs and family heirlooms. We want buyers to visualize living in the house. Buyers will be looking for clues that your house is well cared for. Replace cracked floor or counter tiles. Touch up paint in doorways. A coat of paint transforms a space making it look clean and up to date. Fix leaky faucets. Replace burnt out light bulbs. Have windows cleaned inside and out. Replace old worn out shower curtains and bath mats. Ensure all plumbing fixtures are clean and in good working order. First impressions are everything. Many buyers drive by the home before
making an appointment to view it. Create an inviting tidy entrance. Does the front door need painting? Polish the door handle. Hire a professional gardener to edge and top up the beds and trim trees. 90 percent of today's buyers are shopping online. The pictures need to be captivating. by Georgia The home's best feature should be the first & Tim Wiggins picture on MLS, you have about 6 seconds to engage the buyer so that they go to the listing for more details. An example of this is a home we listed that had previously been on the market. The buyer, who lived in Vancouver, by-passed the listing originally but when we listed it she flagged it, caller her realtor, came over and bought it. Our first picture clearly grabbed her; it was of the sandy beach with a Muskoka chair looking out over the water. Who wouldn't want to wake up to that every morning? The previous realtor's first picture was of the front of the house which was rather small and old looking! Remember real estate should be a good investment, you deserve the most you can get out of it. For more info www.timwiggins.com

ON THIS MONTH did you know that Victoria, the oldest city in the Pacific Northwest, is also the most haunted city in British Columbia?
On This October Month in History by Valerie Green
Two significant things happen in October – Thanksgiving and Halloween. Thanksgiving Day in Canada has been a national public holiday since 1957 held on the second Monday of October and is a chance for people to give thanks for a good harvest. However, First Nations people held ceremonies and festivals to celebrate the completion and bounty of the harvest long before European explorers and settlers came to Canada. During the 18th century many "thanksgivings" were celebrated. For example, refugees fleeing the US Civil War brought the custom of annual thanksgiving festivals to Canada to celebrate their freedom. From 1879 onwards Thanksgiving Day was held every year but the actual date always varied. From the end of WW1 until 1930, both Armistice Day and Thanksgiving Day were celebrated on the Monday closest to November 11. Then in 1931, Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day and Thanksgiving Day was always held on the second Monday in October. US Thanksgiving, however, remains in November. Thanksgiving Day in Canada is also linked to the European tradition of harvest festivals with the symbol of the "Horn of Plenty" (a cornucopia) filled with fruit and vegetables. Halloween, by contrast, is held on October 31 and is the night when children go "trick or treating" dressed in weird costumes. It is a night of witches, goblins and ghosts. And did you know that Victoria, the oldest city in the Pacific Northwest, is also the most haunted city in British Columbia? Spirits are said to roam free in Beacon Hill Park, St. Ann's Academy and Bastion Square, especially at Halloween. There is yet another date in October (the 29th) which caught my attention and it concerns earthquakes. In 1727 there was apparently a severe earthquake in New England and on exactly the same date in 1990 thirty people died in an earthquake in Algeria. Martha Cheney, the niece of settlers in this area, the Blinkhorns, also wrote about an earthquake in her Journal on this same date: She wrote: "We felt a shock of an earthquake which shook the whole house and nearly took us off our feet. It was about 5 o'clock." Are these three earthquake references, although hundreds of years apart and in different parts of the world, just an interesting coincidence. Although it is true that many happenings throughout
history have a habit of occurring at the same time on the same date, I'm hoping that the earthquake connection is not one of them. October 29th is also an important date in history for other reasons. Vancouver's Stanley Park was dedicated in 1889, and in 1929 disaster struck the New York stock market and came to be known as "Black Tuesday." Finally, a fascinating piece of trivia – on October 29th, 1945, the first ball point pen went on sale. Valerie Green is an author and historian and can be reached at valgee@shaw.ca

salish sea news Who are these wonderful waterfowl that will grace Shoal Harbour with their presence?
Feathered Winter Residents by Tina Kelly
In the coming months, the
Salish Sea will gain a few species. Lured by our mild coastal climate and plentiful foraging grounds free of ice, many Northern and Central Canadian aquatic birds will arrive here to hunker down and spend the winter. Across the country, 11.5 million hectares have been set aside as Migratory Bird Sanctuaries and three of those 92 sanctuaries are located in Greater Victoria – Victoria Harbour Migratory Bird Sanctuary, Esquimalt Lagoon Migratory Bird Sanctuary and right here on the Saanich Peninsula, Shoal Harbour Migratory Bird Sanctuary. Freshwater creeks running into Shoal Harbour create a healthy estuarine and tidal mudflat region rich with biological diversity. The salty-freshwater mix allows algae to bloom in the billions – from microscopic diatoms to large seaweeds. The algae feed the invertebrates that feed the fish, creating a veritable smorgasbord of prey for a variety of waterfowl and shorebirds. An estimated, 2,400 birds of fifty-one species depend on this 143 hectare sanctuary that stretches through Sidney and North Saanich. Who are these wonderful waterfowl that will grace Shoal Harbour with their presence? Look for American Wigeons, Horned Grebes, Canvasbacks, Ruddy Ducks, Scoters, and Scaups. But one species in particular stands out above the rest: the Bufflehead. The Bufflehead has one of the best sounding common names of any local species and may be the smallest diving duck in the harbour, but it is considered a big local celebrity because of its prominence on Sidney's Coat of Arms. In 1996, the Town redesigned the crest to include this migratory duck as a way to highlight the Town's coastal location and its importance as an overwintering ground for the species, as well as for the Bufflehead's "vivacity and boundless energy." But wait! Now this dapper little duck doesn't just have a crest; it has its own day. So punctual with its exodus from its forest nesting grounds in the Caribou and arrival in Shoal Harbour – on the 298th day of the solar cycle – that October 15 has been declared All Buffleheads Day. From waterfowl to wanderers, the harbour also welcomes several shorebird species. Look for Black Turnstones, Dunlins, Surfbirds and
Sanderlings poking about the shoreline for food. So while your snowbird friends of the human variety are packing up their spring clothes and escaping the coming cold, make like a duck, embrace the weather and explore your local sanctuary to welcome your new dabbling, diving and shoreline feathered winter neighbours. Note: There are many access points for exploring Shoal Harbour by foot – Lillian Hoffar Park, Resthaven Park, Lochside Trail, and beach accesses off many residential streets. Celebrate All Buffleheads Day October 15, 16 and 17 with community events listed on distinclysidney.ca.

Sidney Initiative to Help Dementia Sufferers Consider this great story: an elderly woman ended up in a bank, thinking she was in her pharmacy. The bank called the woman's doctor, who looked up her file to find out what pharmacy she went to. They instructed the bank that the pharmacy was in the same plaza and they helped direct her to the pharmacy. The doctor's office also phoned the pharmacy to let them know that she was coming in. What a great example of the business community working together to help this woman. Last fall, the Alzheimer Society of B.C. formally launched the Dementia-Friendly Communities initiative to develop a heightened awareness of dementia and reduce stigma in local communities throughout B.C. Over the last year the Society has worked with municipalities, Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), professional groups and the general public on this exciting initiative. Now Bayshore Home Health and Sidney All Care Residences are spearheading a drive to help make our community a safer and friendlier place for those living with dementia. Recently at a Sidney town council meeting the Alzheimer society presented data that showed there are over 1,400 people on the Saanich Peninsula who have been diagnosed with dementia and up to 60 percent of these people live in their own homes. of Bayshore Home Health and Terra Munro, of Sidney All Care Residences decided to team up and help support those with dementia and their families by co-hosting two events this fall. On Thursday, November 5 they will be showing the Documentary Alive Inside, an inspiring film about Alzheimer disease for the general public. There will be a silent auction, refreshments and a brief presentation about the dementia friendly community initiative for Sidney. All money raised will go to the Alzheimer Society, ensuring that the many programs and resources that they offer will continue to be available to those who have been touched by this disease. On Wednesday, November 18 they are inviting the businesses of Sidney, First Responders, volunteers and concerned citizens to attend a workshop on Dementia. Participants will learn about dementia, how to recognize it and how to support and connect with someone who suffers from it. Very importantly they will learn how to make their place of business dementia friendly; those in attendance will receive a certificate that they can proudly display in their workplace. Both events take place at Sidney All Care Residence, 2269 Mills Rd. If you would like to learn more about this initiative please call Terra Munro at 778.351.2505 or email Stasia Hartley at sidney@bayshore.ca.
inside out Stress Less, Live More Well, it's official: summer is over, and fall is here to stay. The days are getting shorter and grayer, kids are back in school, and there are no more vacation by Dr. Marita Schauch plans in sight. Back to reality, as BSc ND they say. & Laura McKenzie This time of year can be MHK particularly stressful for some of us, what with the return to a more rigid schedule, more pressure at work, and lack of that relaxing dose of Vitamin D we got so used to over the summer. Stress, as we know, can wreak havoc on our overall health and well-being. I could go on and on about all of the negative effects of stress, but, honestly, that's what the internet's for. I think our time is better spent examining the root of the problem, and taking a more preventative approach. Here are a few stress busting strategies to help you stay healthy this fall, into the Christmas season, and right through until our days start getting longer again. Build your self-awareness: The better you know yourself; the better you will be at predicting your reaction to stress. When you know what triggers your stress, you can better equip yourself to combat it before it even presents itself. Manage your time: Much of our stress comes from fear of the unknown. When we're unsure of how our day or week is going to shape up, we worry about all the variables involved. A good agenda can be your best friend. Make a "to-do" list and check off items as you complete them. Research has shown that stress is highly
associated with feelings of control; the more control we take over our schedules, the more confident and at-ease we feel. Watch what you eat: Refined sugars, excess caffeine, alcohol and processed foods can exacerbate the stress response. Eat plenty of colourful fruits and veggies, whole grains, good fats and free-range and organic lean proteins. Consider Supplementation: Stress can cause your body to use up nutrients more rapidly, so therefore extra anti-stress vitamins and minerals are needed to support the body. Vitamin C, zinc, B vitamins, and magnesium can help increase your resistance to stress. Get active: Exercise is proven to be one of the best stress-relievers out there. Exercise provides the body with an opportunity to burn off accumulated stress hormones, and serves as one of the most powerful relaxation tools. Give yourself a break: When we are rested we are better able to face the day and overcome challenges. Don't stress about what you didn't accomplish but rather, focus on what you DID get done. Change your perception: Stress isn't always bad. In fact, the concept of "positive stress" or "Eustress" is the idea that small amounts of stress actually increase motivation, efficiency, and help you accomplish goals. As long as it doesn't happen with every task you do, experiencing a little bit of stress can actually be a good thing. Further to the above suggestions, you can find extra support from services such as massage therapy, naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, physical therapy, therapeutic yoga and qi gong classes, which might just do the trick. Empathy is part of their practice: "It is a service to patients plus we also realize that many people simply would not be able to get anything done if they had to pay the full costs upfront." Another barrier is removed, increasing accessibility. Loren proudly explains their considerable efforts in accommodating patients who are fearful of the dental chair: "We deliberately set up our office to offer intravenous sedation to patients who need it, so they do not have to go to a hospital to get it done." Their vast array of options to help patients relax is quite impressive, with efforts to accommodate all levels of discomfort and varying degrees of anxiety: "We have different levels of sedation." This runs the gamut from a prescription for anxiety-reducing medication to drugs producing deeper levels of sedation for people going through difficult procedures. Letters, Names, Places, and Animals? by Julian Sale
Every year when carmakers assign new names to their vehicles, I have to wonder if they got carried away with a bowl of alpha bits! For example, we have the Subaru BRZ (whose twin is the Scion FR-S), the Lincoln MKX and MKZ, the Acura ILX, RDX, MDX, and we can't forget the Subaru with the awesome WRX STI. The Europeans love letters and numbers. Mercedes names the class, followed by an engine choice, for example E350, meaning an E class vehicle with a 3.5L engine. ML550 – that's an ML sporting 5.5L V8. Ferrari has always been clever with their digits … 348 = 3.4L V8, a 512 is a 5.0L V12, but many of their models deviate from this numbering system. Volkswagen went a different route altogether starting in the late 1970s, naming their cars after winds and currents and people. The Passat name means "trade wind" in German, Sirocco is a Mediterranean wind. Touareg? Those are Saharan nomads. Let's rewind a bit. I once loved a 1966 Mercury Comet Caliente, reminding me of the stellar names of the period. Ford / Mercury had the Meteor, the Galaxie, and said Comet. Chrysler suits had their heads in the stars too, with the Satellite, and the Polara (Polaris star). Nova came from Chevrolet who also liked animals and places, with Parisienne (not from Paris) and their Impala (African Antelope) and BelAir. Ford's Montego trim shared a name with a Jamaican town, their Monterey named after a busy American trade port. Lamborghini, whose logo is a raging bull, named cars after fighting bulls. Ferruccio Lamborghini visited a cattle ranch in 1962 and was inspired. Names, such as Murcielago, Gallardo, Veneno, Huracan were of bovine significance and relation.
How about Toyota and Kia? Toyota is using places and geography, like Sequoia, Tacoma, Tundra, Highlander, Kia / Hyundai referenced place names like Sedona, Rio, Tucson, Sorento, Santa Fe among others. Enough said … I'm going home in my Nissan LEAF. Nothing to do with trees BTW, that's Leading Environmentally-friendly Affordable Family Vehicle!

Brentwood Bay Rotarians Help to Fight Polio October 24 is World Polio Day. Thanks to immunization, Canada has been polio free for the last 20 years. However before the polio vaccine was introduced in 1955, thousands of Canadians were affected. There is no cure for polio so prevention is imperative. The polio vaccine is a safe and effective way to prevent polio. It is free and available to all Canadians. Rotarian Joan Toone knows all too well the ways that polio can affect one's entire life. Having been diagnosed at age seven, Joan is one of many polio survivors who experience Post-Polio Syndrome. She is currently President of the Post Polio Awareness and Support Society of BC. Today, there are only three countries that have never stopped transmission of the wild poliovirus: Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. Less than 370 polio cases were confirmed worldwide in 2014 - a reduction of more than 99 percent since the 1980s. August 11 marked one full year with no new cases in Africa. In 1985, Rotary launched its PolioPlus program, the first initiative to tackle the mass vaccination of children. Since then, Rotary has contributed more than $1.3 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. Joan's husband Terry Toone serves as the PolioPlus Chair for Rotary District 5020. Along with Joan he estimates they have raised funds to provide over 40,000 polio immunizations. The Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation matches all funds raised by Rotarians. Brentwood Bay Rotary has contributed over $29,358 dollars to this effort to date. But until polio is eradicated, all countries remain at risk of outbreaks. Says Joan "We are so close. My dream is during my lifetime to see polio gone like smallpox." grey matters Along with cardiovascular disease and injury, psychiatric emergency is one of the most common medical reasons for air evacuation
Travel Light by Trysh Ashby-Rolls
October 4 to 10 is
Mental Illness Awareness Week. October 10 is World Mental Health Awareness Day. Some of us know all too well the impact of mental illness. Others may say, "Doesn't affect me or my family." This may sound irrelevant, but many of us are starting or building our bucket list of top ten must-see places before it's too late. And travel can be extremely stressful. Stress likely triggered a stroke suffered by a 70 year-old Toronto man the day before he was scheduled to visit his son in the Gulf Islands. For 20 years a rift existed between them. Then, slowly, things changed. Packed and ready to go, the father — always a highly-strung nervous sort — collapsed. An ambulance took him to hospital. It is well-documented that high levels of stress can contribute to physical, social and/or mental health issues. Moreover, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), "mental health issues are the leading cause of ill health among travellers." Along with cardiovascular disease and injury, psychiatric emergency is one of the most common medical reasons for air evacuation. Aside from anyone with a predisposition to a psychological issue, plain old stress can cause big trouble. A traveller is away from all that is familiar, WHO reminds us, especially when going overseas. Seems like a no-brainer, the whole point of travelling. But separated from all that is familiar, far from the usual social support systems, in the midst of foreign peoples, languages and cultures things can feel out of control and bewildering. Normal feelings of safety and good health are threatened. The food is strange, I daren't eat it. Traffic speeds along at twice the rate of sound, how in heck am I to get across the street to my hotel? Omg, are there really snakes and scorpions here? The world tips. If you get really sick the world turns upside down. You try to find a doctor. He doesn't speak a language you both understand. Or services may be non-existent. Medications may be of inferior quality or unavailable. When a monkey bit me in Laos people advised me to get a series of rabies shots. While the journalist in me found the three different hospitals where I had each jab fascinating, the rest of me was revolted and upset by the experience. Since I was in Laos to research, my concentration went into the details of my surroundings to remember for my story. Arm yourself with travel insurance and information before you start packing. Speak to your physician about taking extra medications if you normally need them. Tourists caught in the Nepal earthquake
ran out of vital meds before they could get out of the country. If you take antidepressants or other psychotropic drugs, they should be in properly packaged and labelled containers, stating their name and the reason you take them. If you've recently had a depression, generalized anxiety, psychotic break or seizure, it's important to tell the travel clinic doctor. You may need an alternative to the usual prescription against malaria if you're going to a country where that disease is prevalent. If you're terrified of flying get help developing coping skills. Many airlines run specialized courses. If not, look for a community class to increase your confidence and self-esteem. Then imagine the steps: Arriving at the airport, lining up at the reservation desk, showing your passport and ticket, getting your bag weighed, walking down to your gate number ... Relax. Pack light. Take a book. Bon voyage and see you on the road.

veterinary voice Chickens are easily trainable and can become pets as well as egg producers
Chatting 'bout Chickens by Dr. Shelley Breadner
Did you get chickens
because you love eggs? Or do you have eggs because you love tending chickens? It doesn't matter which came first, but now you are living closer to the land, with hens, eggs, garden scraps and natural fertilizer. Backyard chickens are natural educators by helping families learn about where our food comes from, and how to provide respectful care for animals. Chickens are easily trainable and can become pets as well as egg producers. There are many resources for natural back yard chicken care. By using good husbandry, you can have healthy hens and organic eggs. Let's make a quick checklist to review: Hen House: Secure well to keep out night time predators. Automatic closing doors can benefit, if hens reliably enter at dusk. Houses should be cleaned with lots of soap, water, elbow grease and dilute bleach on all surfaces. Be sure to allow drying and airing out before letting birds back in. Roosts: Lowest roosts should be no more than 18 inches off the ground, and between levels. Perches with flat surfaces are best; 1" x 2" for smaller birds, and 2" x 4" for larger hens. Perches should be removable for cleaning as above. Dust Baths: Essential for healthy birds. Provide a sheltered area where the dust can remain dry. Add Diatomaceous earth to help combat feather mites. Layers: Be sure to provide crushed oyster shell for your hens at all times, as this will help support healthy eggshells. Food: Secure in rat proof storage containers, and keep dry and free from mould. Feeder pails should also be covered to keep rats out.
Food should be provided inside and outside the hen house. Water: Water should be available inside and out and changed daily. Water containers should be washed thoroughly at least every 3 days to prevent biofilm and bacteria from growing. Healthy intestines: Monitor your birds to ensure droppings are consistent and formed. Soft droppings can be supported by adding Apple Cider Vinegar to drinking water at 1 tablespoon per 4 litres daily for 10 to 14 days. Diseases: Sick birds should be isolated and kept warm until they can be seen by a chicken-knowledgeable veterinarian. Many medications cannot be used in chickens and ducks, due to human health risks. Drug use and withdrawal times are critical if your birds are laying or meat birds. Veterinarians should be accredited by the College of Veterinarians of BC to tend poultry. They should be experienced and educated to provide medical care for poultry. It is okay to ask your veterinarian about this, and have them refer you to a vet who can provide care. Eggs: Keep the nest boxes clean and fresh to prevent eggshell contamination. Place diatomaceous earth in the corners to keep mites away. Eggs should be collected daily. Washing of eggs is not recommended. Eggs have a protective coating called the cuticle that prevents bacteria from getting inside. Washing removes this layer and contaminates the contents. If lightly soiled, eggs can be washed with slightly warmer water just before using. If eggs are consistently dirty, improved nest box management is needed. Prepare the frying pan and all your favourite fixings to make the best tasting egg breakfasts! And give thanks to the humble, adorable hens in your back yard!

Loving Spoonfuls The Charles Dickens Pub by Lara Gladych
This is the last in a six-part series of profiles on some of the Saanich Peninsula's wonderful restaurants and pubs. I'm having an early lunch with my husband and two of my kids at the Charles Dickens Pub, and am still taking in the new reality of kid-friendly pubs in our neighbourhood. My boys relish the moment they walked into the Charles Dickens for the first time, plunking themselves down at a table on the upper

level to take in some sports television. I reel them in from the dart boards and pool tables, which remain part of the adult-only realm, but they're content to let that be. Children are now welcome at the Charles Dickens Pub, accompanied by an adult, any day until 10 p.m. I rattle-off menu items that I'm sure will excite them: Mac n' Cheese with Bacon and Butter Chicken, in particular. I've already settled on the day's special, Chef Dena's homemade cabbage rolls with perogies and salad.
Before lunch, I met with Sean Kelly, Pub Manager, Travelodge General Manager Nick Coates and Chef Dena Bystedt. Much of our conversation centered on two big changes: first, that they are now welcoming families, and second, that they are launching a revamped menu, all aiming towards luring more of a dining crowd. Dena has just recently joined the Charles Dickens family. She's been busy putting her own twist on existing menu favourites while

rolls were a meaty variety, tender and hearty. Dena added perogies with bacon, onion and sour cream, and a salad as well, to make it a completely comforting meal. Two orders of homemade mac n' cheese with bacon came to our table, and I was pleased to see (and taste) that it wasn't a heavy version of the pasta that it sometimes can be. Light and smooth, which made way for the flavour-punch of the bacon. Butter chicken is my eldest son's favourite dish, and Dena's version got the thumbs up. Served with naan bread and rice, it was exactly what you'd hope it would be. My visit to the Charles Dickens Pub was a real treat for me. I so enjoyed meeting the staff, and can't say enough about the lengths they all went to to ensure that our visit was a great one. Sean said goodbye with an invitation to come back soon for a drink with my husband. I think I just might take him up on it. The Charles Dickens Pub, 2250 Beacon Ave. Sidney, 250.656.5042.

Sweet
New Event in Sidney This October, SHOAL Activity Centre is launching a new feature – Cookbook Lunches! On Tuesday, October 27, 12 noon – 2 p.m. with Chef Angelo Prosperi-Porta, award-winning Chef from Sooke, appearing as guest speaker at a buffet lunch that features not only a recipe from his newest book, HONEY – Everyday Recipes for Cooking and Baking with Nature's Sweetest Secret Ingredient, but a wonderful overview of this great cookbook. Inspired by his profound respect and admiration for bees, Chef Angelo pays tribute in the cookbook to "those first few brave souls who gathered honey from hives in the wild and to those who began
and continue to work in what we know now as the honey industry… and to the honeybees themselves – without which we would be missing not only a delicious and nutritious source of natural sugar but also approximately 30 to 35 percent of the fruits, nuts and vegetables we consume." Published by TouchWood Editions, the book begins with a Forward by Bob Liptrot, Master beekeeper at Tugwell Creek Meadery, and continues with an extensive Introduction that includes a look at the world of bees, honey varieties, non-culinary/medical uses of honey; challenges, and tips for substituting honey for sugar, as well as a wealth of delicious recipes. Cost for this event is only $10. A cookbook will be given away as a door prize. Books can be purchased at Tanner's Books in Sidney – come prepared to have yours autographed! Samples and other door prizes will be available too! Call 250.656.5537 for tickets (must be purchased in advance).

Honey Bee Good To Me … by Jennifer Bowles
There is an art to creating a salad that doesn't taste like rabbit food. On the other hand, that doesn't mean fried chicken and a half block of cheese on a bed of head lettuce qualifies as salad. Focusing on taste, texture and wellness; my girlfriend 'Angie Pangie' is the master of creating spectacular and healthful creations in an effortless combination of Mother Natures' bounty. Growing all types of berries and lettuce varieties on her modest home plot, she inspires me to do the same. I crave the days when she whips up one of her salads and we get to feast guilt free! One of her favourite ingredients that she loves to include is that liquid gold ... honey. Its versatility in both sweet and savoury dishes is a small fraction of its charm, not to mention the subtle kiss it can add to your cup of tea or coffee (in lieu of processed sugar). The other fun and unique element in this dish is the addition of popcorn – trust me, it's a fantastic addition. This month, I give full credit to Angie for this incredible salad recipe that she whipped up for us. Its full body and heartiness is a perfect option for any fall lunch or easy light dinner.
Body of Salad 1 bunch kale leaves 2 handfuls Spring Mix lettuce 1/4 cup sliced almonds 6 B.C. Strawberries sliced Goat cheese (crumbled)
Topping 1/2 bag of popped popcorn (warm is best) season with salt and pepper in the bag drizzle 2 tsp of local honey into the bag and shake, shake, shake! Toss all salad ingredients together except the popcorn. Plate the salad and top with the crunchy popped corn. Fresh, healthy and packed full of local goodness. Amazing!

smell the coffee it's like Christmas decorations going up in October … DON'T even get me started!
Mr. Autumn Coffee Man & PSL Victoria B.C. – The leaves crunch pleasurably beneath my Birkenstocks (no socks on of course) and there's a certain comfort I feel sipping my hot, chocolaty tasting Americano with my favourite sweater on as fall approaches like a freight-train leaving summertown. Nothing beats autumn on Vancouver Island, it's like the sun has worked overtime through the summer and it needs a little more sleep. I don't care what others say … fall 'has' a distinct smell that's unique and I believe coffee pairs beautifully with that crisp, cold overtone with every breath. Unfortunately, this is the time of the year where I go into my favourite coffee spot(s) and have to wait much longer for my coffee, because a number of trendy coffee-cats have discovered the seasonal 'Pumpkin Spice Latte' … blech! I consider myself an Autumnal Ambassador. In fact, call me Mr. Autumn Sheppard instead of Steve from this point on until next spring. I love mid-October for all the reasons to do with coffee drinking. One of my favourite foods is pumpkin pie and I traditionally eat an entire large one on Thanksgiving day, and wash it down with some dark turkey meat and stuffing. However, I am 'NOT' a fan of the PSL which is the new hipster acronym for the, you know what I'm talking about drink. I cannot for the life of me figure out how people make the connection of pumpkins with coffee, in its traditional sense that is,

and the chemical version of the latte that coffee houses serve? This year has been particularly bad as cafes started to promote the PSL in early September; it's like Christmas decorations going up in October … DON'T even get me started! OK, let's get positive here … there are other Fall-ish drinks out there and I've had a couple of interesting ones over the past weeks. The dark chocolate raspberry mocha with cinnamon and nutmeg sprinkled on top and the mulled hot apple cider with a cinnamon stick. The mocha was made with real raspberry puree and the dark chocolate not overly sweet, very tasty overall. The mulled cider was made with locally grown apples, and perfectly spiced with a stick of cinnamon, which I enjoyed playing with long after I was done my drink. I really look forward to the essence of the Northern Hemisphere's tilt away from the sun and the cold weather it brings. last word It's my last Last Word; my swansong if you will! Allison Smith will be returning to the editor's chair next month after her year of maternity leave, and I will be … well, that's the question isn't it? This year has been a stretch for me. I wasn't sure when I took the job quite how I was going to make it work, just that I wanted it so much that I had to make it work. As I heard someone say this week "if you want something done ask a busy person," that's been me this year! Juggling two jobs, two kids, volunteer commitments and the desire to still have some sort of social life has been challenging, but also invigorating. I can't pretend that the balance has always been right but what I've got out of the opportunity has more than made up for some of the stress, anxiety and the invitations I've had to turn down! I have loved getting to know my community through Seaside, crossing paths with all sorts of people I would never have otherwise met. I constantly find myself passing on snippets of information – things I've learned from our expert columnists. The many talented writers who've tolerated me messing with their words have taught me all sorts and I think
(I hope) my writing has benefitted from their great examples. Is there a lesson in here somewhere? Just that even a few years earlier I wouldn't have had the courage to try and take it all on, so maybe there is something to be said for getting older. Or perhaps the message is that it's okay to take a chance, with the knowledge that things might not work out. I know I'm not winning an Oscar here, but I would like to thank a few people without whom it wouldn't have been possible … There's my family of course who have tolerated and supported in equal measure the late nights and weekends at the computer. Also Julie, Ken and the rest of the epic team at Holy Cow who have been so flexible allowing me to meet all Seaside's deadlines. Many friends have bucked me up when I felt I couldn't do it (and I have to give an extra thanks to my friend Erin for her insight, opinions and wine). And you readers, thanks for coming up and chatting when you see me in Sidney: I've loved hearing what you think of the magazine, and I've appreciated all the feedback (even when it's a photo taken especially to show me a mistake.) Now I'll return you to Allison's steady hands, but I'm not going too far. As of October I'll be happily taking on the role of Seaside's Editorial Director, and will continue to welcome all your ideas.
