Some draw or paint; others weave and sculpt. There are a multitude of talented Indigenous artists in our community. My recent interviews with some of them not only helped me learn more about their talent but revealed, perhaps more importantly, their courage and tenacity in the face of struggle.

What does business casual in 2018 look like? Maybe better yet, what can it look like? In this world where the rule seems to be there are no rules, I’ll give you a vision of casual dressing for business that can take you seamlessly from the office to a cocktail party!

JESSE HOLTH PAGE 42 Affordable housing shouldn’t be a luxury – everyone deserves to live in a decent home. The housing crisis in B.C. is reflected in Greater Victoria, and here on the Peninsula. I was grateful to discover that Stride Properties is working to solve this problem, and is committed to creating livable communities.

TRACEY JONES & STACEY KAMINSKI PAGE 79 Fall is the time to start a reno project or room refresh! Wondering how to get a space feeling complete? One that makes you want to get cozy and hunker down in? Creating rooms that not only look great but feel great takes some planning. Style with texture, colour and personality in mind!

ALYSSA MADILL PAGE 59 Let’s inspire you to navigate your health journey from the inside out. Musculoskeletal symptoms can come from dietary choices; this is bridging the gap between two health disciplines. While I have treated the external structures of the body for years, my eyes are wide open to the importance of nutrition.

CATHERINE MOFFAT COVER The choice of objects: striped fabric, a bowl with red interior in which a brilliant red billiard ball rests, is deliberate, carefully designed, and modern. Painstaking rendering exhales traditional chiaroscuro over this simple image. The palette is as limited as the subject. I paint my aspirations for order and elegance.

F I R ST WO R D They say art is in the eye of the beholder. I’ve been thinking

reactions challenged after choosing our cover for this issue, and then meeting the artist, Catherine Moffat. My perception of her piece, and then actually meeting her, were totally different. It got me thinking.

about this a lot, and wondering if perhaps this is also true in our day-to-day life. I think it can take years to see that we are all different, and therefore see things differently.

There are many ways of looking at the world. I think we have to be wise enough to make the effort to try and see things differently, to open up to other people’s ideas and perceptions. If we try to have a different interpretation of a situation, we may actually be able to have a different outcome. I’ve read a lot of Dr. Wayne Dyer’s lectures and he says “when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” Perhaps seeing life differently could heal a childhood wound, grudges against family members, fights with old friends, or problems at work. The ultimate outcome could be feeling at peace with yourself, and a beautiful purposeful life!

The same event can happen in front of two people and their perception of it can be completely different. The amazing thing is that each of these two people will be totally convinced that their way of seeing the event is the only absolute truth. It’s all about our own interpretation of all that we come across. We have our own story and we project it onto everything we see, and we are likely convinced that we are right and others are wrong, simply because they don’t see things the same way we do. Consider how often you make this kind of judgement every day. When you meet a new coworker, you immediately begin to develop an impression. When you visit the grocery store, you might draw conclusions about the cashier, even though you know very little about this person. Why all this talk about perception? I had my initial

Maybe, like art, life is all about perception.

The Finest of the Fine:

The Sidney Fine Art Show Returns What makes art "fine?" Simply put, it is art deemed to be of high quality. And because there is so much excellent art created by many talented, creative artists in our part of the world, the Sidney Fine Art Show has always received a wealth of entries. Well over 1,000 in fact, which is just too many to include in the final display at the Mary Winspear Centre. There's room in Bodine Hall for only about 400 pieces. It's a tough job to choose what will be in the Show, so the organizers invite three professionals from the art world to take on the task of adjudicating all the art. Jurors are selected based on renown, accreditation, curatorial experience, art medium and previous jurying engagements. They are confirmed at least one year in advance. This year the Jurors are Mike Svob, Ken Faulks and Cindy Gibson, all with exceptional qualifications. Adjudication is "live and in colour" for the Sidney Fine Art Show. That means all the art pieces entered must be brought to the venue for the Jurors to view. No digital image submissions are accepted. Adjudication takes place over three days in September, one month before the Show, and requires over 100 volunteers to make it happen. All the artwork, clearly identified by assigned numbers, comes in on the first day and is placed in numerical order throughout the auditorium. For the purposes of jurying, artwork is identified only by number, not by artist's name. The Jurors arrive once all the artwork is in. This allows them to have their first glimpse of the hundreds of pieces awaiting to be juried; it's definitely overwhelming to see so much art assembled in one place! Everyone takes a deep breath and gets a good night's sleep before Adjudication begins in earnest the following day. Each Juror works individually with an assistant to note the scores, and a team of volunteers present each piece of the 1,000+ pieces of art for viewing. Scoring is rated on a scale of one to five, with five being the highest score for excellence. Jurors do not consult with each other or compare notes during this process. It's a demanding task but, by the

end of the day, every piece has received a score from all three jurors. Scores for each piece are compiled for a composite total. The highest total possible is 15, receiving a score of five from each of the three Jurors. Pieces that score a composite of 10 and higher are generally included in the Show, depending on display space. The Jurors reconvene on the third day to work in consultation if there is a wide variance in some scoring, and more pieces can be selected for the Show. At this time, the Jurors confer on the winning pieces in each prize category. Adjudication is a fair process but, as with all art, there's always an element that's subjective. Come and see the results at the Sidney Fine Art Show, October 12 to 14 at Sidney's Mary Winspear Centre. Visit www.sidneyfineartshow.ca for more information about this year's Jurors. Announcing the 2018

PROFESSIONALS winners As Voted by Seaside Magazine Readers!

Customer Service - Courtney Thomas (Quince Café & Ice Cream) “Quince Café - they always serve you with a big smile and conversation. Every day.” Quince is about community and making people feel welcome. Their priority is to create a space that feels cozy and friendly and welcomes customers to come relax and be themselves. Quince values homemade food, great coffee and excellent customer service.

Innovation – Karen Morgan (Saanich Peninsula Hospital & Healthcare Foundation) “I think Karen Morgan at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation has pushed the box, way beyond its edges, on healthcare to be more inclusive as she has worked for years with others to change the way healthcare has been delivered on the Peninsula. She has worked to develop a model of care that will strengthen the viability of the hospital as well as bring doctors into the community so those without family doctors can find one. Over the last 18 years she has grown the Foundation into a vibrant organization that has changed the face of philanthropy in our community. She could also stand out in the Community Support Award category.”

Branding - Sidney BIA “I would like to suggest the Sidney BIA for this; not only have they made Sidney look amazing, they have created a destination brand for us. The new videos and brochures are great and vibrant and make our little town look like the place to be!”

Environmental - Motorize - Your EV Store From website: Motorize is your go-to place for plug in electric vehicles. We carry pure plug-in vehicles as well as extended range hybrids and other alternatives to the traditional gas guzzler internal combustion vehicles..

Community - Judy Peterson, Recreation Manager (Sidney All Care Residence) “The recreation programs go above and beyond any other care home. The prom in June was phenomenal and it included high school students and three care homes from the Sidney area. My mother was crying happy tears and couldn’t stop talking about it for weeks.”

Advice from Our 2017 Professionals Winners Who better to give advice to local businesspeople than other local businesspeople? Here, Seaside Magazine asks last year’s Professionals winners to share some thoughts on the importance of their award category to their business. Winner: Customer Service. Fran Daviss, INVIS - Canada’s Mortgage Experts. In my business it used to be all about closing the deal and moving on to the next one. It didn’t matter how you got to that point; there was always a new client. I cater to that new client. This new client expects to be treated as a person, who wants more from the experience and the experience I am sharing, and does not want to be treated just as a number. This person remembers how he or she was treated, and refers business to me because of the service I provided. I follow up during and after the closing, and return calls in a timely fashion. When I provide excellent service my clients become loyal and long-term clients. Winner: Community. Art Finlayson, Finlayson Bonet Architecture. I’d like to thank Seaside Magazine for asking me to comment on how important the Saanich Peninsula communities have been to our Architectural business. We are proud to have been involved in providing buildings throughout these communities. Our firm would not have been able to succeed without my involvement in the Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and Silvia Bonet’s involvement in Rotary. These two organizations have provided the connections that continually bring commissions to our office. The Saanich Historical Artifacts Society and the Central Saanich Community Association have also been important organizations to belong to as volunteers. We are thankful that we live and work in these most beautiful communities as the weather and the location in Canada continues to bring people to the Saanich Peninsula so that we can design housing, work places, recreation facilities and institutions. The Saanich Peninsula Hospital and the Victoria Airport have been important to us for the connections and buildings they have afforded us. We are

L to R: Matt Peulen, Art Finlayson, Laura McLarty, Fran Daviss

most excited at this time to be able to shape the architectural facade of our communities. Winner: Innovation. Matt Peulen, Stride Properties. It's important to remember that innovation isn't always about recreating the wheel: sometimes it's just being committed to overcoming challenges. At Stride, we love to present "out there" ideas and then wow people by actually making them happen. A recent innovation we're very proud of was moving the heritagedesignated Verdier House by a few feet to make a much larger project feasible. We're completely restoring the 117-year-old building into eight rental homes and co-locating it with a 40-unit affordable rental building. Innovation was at the heart of this project's significant community support. To be a successful disruptor, you need to listen to advice (you don't always have to take it), get financial buy-in and build credibility. You can't innovate alone, so focus on building trust. Winner: Branding. Laura McLarty, Flush Bathroom & Travel Essentials. Winning last year's branding award really meant a lot to me. Since expanding my bathroom business into travel I was worried about confusing my brand. The award gave me the confidence, after redesigning my logo, that I must be on the right track! The meaning of brand is everything: perception of a business' customer service, reputation, advertising and logo. Having all of these parts working well maintains a healthy, successful brand. Building credibility and trust with our customers is most important to me. The goal of an indelible impression with them is the driving force behind my business. Having a strong brand is like turning your business logo into a flag. It represents everything your business stands for. And there is no place I'd rather fly it than Sidney. A FINANCIAL GUIDE FOR JOB HOPPERS Another company has offered you your dream job. You just completed a course and want to put this newfound learning to good use. Your buddy is involved in an by Travis Koivula exciting new software start-up and Island Savings Insurance Services there is a new opportunity for you. Gone are the days of working for one employer for three decades: employees are changing jobs more than ever before. According to a Workopolis report, more than half of employees don't remain in the same role for more than two years. From a financial standpoint, we usually think about our salary, but there are many other financial considerations when switching roles. Pension. There are numerous complexities and tax considerations regarding your pension. Typically, your former employer will send out a pension option package which contains information that can be difficult to understand. It's highly recommended that you run through this package with an advisor who can help you navigate these complexities. Severance. If your employer has decided to end your working relationship, you may be receiving a severance package. Although this

If you have group life insurance in your current role and are leaving the company, you have the option to convert the existing coverage (keep the insurance) or apply to get a new insurance policy privately. When changing jobs, it's a good time to do a review of all of your insurance needs. Benefits. If you are moving from a large organization to a small start-up, it is unlikely that the new employer will have as much coverage. Also, does your new employer offer any financial top-ups in addition to your EI benefit if you are planning on having children? Having an employer top-up for parental leave could have a major impact on your finances. Changing jobs is an exciting time and a great opportunity to reenergize yourself. By taking into consideration all of these financial pieces, you'll ensure that you begin this new challenge on the right foot. ADRIENNE PEIRCE

Saanichton Law Offices Friendly and personable – these are the two words that come to mind when describing Adrienne Peirce. With many years of experience, Adrienne began her career with a real estate company and then progressed to the legal side of things, where she has spent the majority of her employment conveying real estate (preparing legal documents and balancing the numbers), developing good contacts, amicable relationships, and a strong knowledge of the real estate industry. Now working with C.J. (Kip) Wilson at Saanichton Law, Adrienne brings with her 15 years of experience preparing documents related to mortgages, sales and purchases for the properties of clients all over Vancouver Island, inclusive of the Saanich Peninsula and into the Greater Victoria area. Adrienne has assumed the role of a Real Estate Listing Representative for C. J. (Kip) Wilson, Saanichton Law. A Real Estate Listing Representative helps guide a property seller through the listing and selling process, arranging showings and open houses. Kip has great confidence in Adrienne as she relates well with clients, has legal experience and knowledge, and goes the extra mile to ensure their clients’ properties shine with their full potential for prospective buyers. Adrienne finds it a great pleasure to work with clients, mortgage brokers and Realtors. Whether you chat with her on the phone or bump into her while out and about, she will be smiling and meeting new people. In her spare time Adrienne is running around with her fiveyear-old son and their three Bernese Mountain dogs, including the newest addition of Edgar, who is five months old. Edgar likes to spend time in the Saanichton Law Office and being introduced to clients who give him dog cookies. On special days you can find Edgar and Mac (Kip’s two-year-old Portuguese water dog) playing tug-of-war together in the office. Feel free to stop by anytime at Saanichton Law to meet Adrienne, receive information on her present listings and give Edgar a cookie. The coffee is always hot!

Do You Work to Live or Live to Work? Seaside Magazine wants to live up to our slogan of being “the voice of the Saanich Peninsula,”so, in every issue, we’ll be asking people to answer a question. We’re looking for responses from all ages by Lara Gladych and across the diverse neighbourhoods that form our community. For this issue I sent the question “Do you work to live, or live to work?” off to various people within my network here on the Peninsula. I think that most readers will hear at least some of their own feelings echoed in the responses I received this month. “I live to live,” said Colin, 52, casting new light on the question. “Work is just a minor distraction that tries to get in the way sometimes, but never succeeds, as I’m too busy living life.” Stephanie, 45, is a “live to work” person. “That’s because I love what I do. I don’t love it all of the time, but 95% of the time. I’m actually on my third career at age 45, and it’s not because I have been unsuccessful at a career, nor am I indecisive. I simply have an open 20 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | OCTOBER 2018

mind with different passions and interests, and I believe that change is good for the soul [and] allows for personal growth. Life is too short to not enjoy what you do. It should never be ‘just a job.’” Jay, 39, said: “I don’t think I do either. Or maybe [I do] both? I really enjoy my job and I’m always looking forward to going back to work after a stretch of time off. Even back-to-back days are not a chore, but I don’t feel the need to come to work every day because I am so wrapped up in the job itself. It’s a great balance. I hope others feel this way about what they do, too.” “I feel I’m one of the fortunate ones that actually loves going to work,” reflected Anette, 48. “I am thankful to have a job that truly brings me joy, and one where I feel I’m making a difference. Even if I won the lottery I’d still be working. Maybe not full time, so I could enjoy more quality family life, but I would definitely not quit. So, I guess I live to work. I can’t imagine going to work everyday and not enjoying it. We spend the majority of our lives at work, so to stay positive and inspired it should always be something you enjoy.” Lisa, 47, brought good points to both sides of the argument. “I don’t think of them as distinct [or] ‘either/or’ scenarios. When I

hear “live to work” I think it implies that work is the only priority. Conversely, when I hear “work to live” I think it implies that work is just something to get through. I don’t identify with either. For me, I live and I work, and I enjoy both … I don’t do one for the other; rather, I try to make sure that I balance both so that I can enjoy each without one being at the expense of another.” Balance was emphasized by Pete, 50, too. “Good, positive balance is definitely important to me. I think I am better at what I do if I strike a right balance between work, leisure and family. I think when I can find that balance everyone benefits: my family, my customers and me!” “Without question, I work to live!” said Ben, 46. “In my early 20s I had a series of health issues which quickly taught me that any day outside of a hospital is a great day! I am extremely fortunate to have been able to make a living in my dream career, but my family is my true priority. No amount of money or career success can buy back your health or the time you’ve missed with your loved ones.” Mary, also 46, had this to say: “Work to live. I love my work but I often, so very often, think that if I won the lottery how much I would absolutely love to not ‘work’ for a paycheque but, rather, I would spend my days volunteering in the exact same area. I would have the fun and rewarding feeling of how very important what I do is, but without the often-overwhelming feeling of pressure to be everything to all.” Stephanie is 48, and her candid thinking will surely resonate with many. “I think in a perfect world we would all like to find the worklife balance and respond that we work to live. Setting perfect worlds aside, in my business, which is 100% commission, we must always be either working or looking for work. It’s a question of survival. There are no guarantees, and you are only as good as your last sale. Although I would like to respond with ‘working to live,’ it’s truly more like ‘living to work.’” Amanda, 42, who is in the “work to live” party, loves the quote “Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.” In this month of Thanksgiving, may we all find more balance in our lives.

SEAN MCNEILL (COFOUNDER / A.K.A. THE PRINCIPAL) McTavish Academy of Art

What began as a dream many years ago became a reality when we opened our doors at 1720 McTavish Road (North Saanich) on May 9, 2016.

With the encouragement and support of family, friends and community, we have seen the 18,000-square-foot former McTavish Road School, and adjacent agricultural land, transform into a vibrant centre dedicated to the arts. Our halls are alive with passionate displays from local artists, and the exterior of the building is splashed with vivid colour. You are immediately immersed in the creative energy as you walk the halls of this incredible facility.

Over the past almost two-anda-half years, we have offered classes, workshops and events in a wide spectrum of mediums. We have worked with amazing instructors and organizations

that have enabled our community to explore and discover new ways to create. We have also celebrated our community by joining in countless events held throughout the Saanich Peninsula. McTavish Academy Of Art is a destination for art; music; dance; yoga; events; creative expression and agriculture, close to home. The Arts have been embraced as a vehicle to empower and inspire our local and Island communities, and to facilitate connections with a diverse and international community of artists. Working with local instructors, organizations and the community, we continue to grow and develop new classes, workshops and events for you to experience, at any age. We look forward to the continued support of personal and professional endeavours in a creative and collaborative atmosphere. Listed below is a sampling of upcoming activities, plus many more to discover on our website (mctavishacademy.ca) Art Studio: beginner’s acrylic painting, printmaking, guitar building, paint parties and wire crochet. This year's self-guided tour has attracted more than 25 talented artists from Brentwood Bay, Central and North Saanich, and Sidney. "We're fortunate to have the fall Studio Tour follow on the heels of the Sidney Fine Art Show," says Wendy Picken, one of the tour organizers and an artist herself. "If someone sees artwork they like at the Sidney Show, that artist may also be part of the studio tour which gives people a chance to see more of their work in a studio setting." With many new artists involved as well as long-time favourites, art lovers will be able to enjoy a wide variety of genres through paintings, metal and fabric sculptures, pottery, woodcuts, wearable art, jewelry and more. The tour also gives visitors a chance to explore the beauty of the Saanich Peninsula. A few of the artists will be grouping their work in one setting, such as the ArtSea Gallery in Sidney's Tulista Park, McTavish Academy of Art in North Saanich and Russell Nursery near Deep Cove. The others will be displaying their artworks in their home studios. A colourful brochure with self-guiding map is available

at numerous locations around the Saanich Peninsula and in Victoria. A complete list of places carrying the brochure is available at www.artsea.ca under "ArtSea Happenings." The brochure contains writeups about the artists and their type of artwork, which makes it easy to decide on a route. Picken suggests: "Give yourself plenty of time – the full two days – to be able to browse and talk to the artists about their techniques and creative inspiration." According to the tour organizers, one of the best outcomes from the tour is that artists get feedback from the visitors which can further spark their creativity. During the studio tour, visitors have the opportunity to explore the Peninsula and enjoy its rural scenery encompassing wineries, pumpkin fields, forested parks, marinas, scenic Mount Baker (on a clear day), market gardens, country stores and garden nurseries. The ArtSea Gallery at Tulista Park is right beside the waterfront pathway that takes walkers into downtown Sidney where they can enjoy its small town ambiance. ArtSea, the Saanich Peninsula community arts council, also organizes a spring studio tour, usually on the third weekend in June.

Mastering Business Casual in the Fall of 2018

d.g.bremner & co.

Along with all of you, I have ridden the wave of changing definitions for the term "business casual," and today we're on the upward sweep of yet another refinement. Just to be clear: originally, the term meant you could come to work in a sport coat, dress pants and a nice shirt, but leave the tie at home. Over the years, the definition of "business casual" has tended to shift, a bit like a wave, with the times. In the past decade or so, it's been more to the "casual" side, though now you can certainly see the momentum shifting back to a more polished version. Leading the way would be one of the most exciting things to come into the menswear business in many years: the unconstructed sport coat. This is a garment that looks like a sport coat, but feels more like a sweater, most often made of soft, modern tweeds (nothing like the old Harris Tweed!) but a beautiful fabric that any special someone will be happy to walk arm in arm with. In many cases, the absence of shoulder pads, a canvas chest piece and the tendency of many of these coats to be of a lanolin-rich wool fabric also give an additional benefit. Now the jacket can double as an outerwear piece, replacing a windbreaker, and it's a great look with a scarf (remember all those scarves forgotten in your bottom drawer? Now you have a reason to pull them out and wear them!). This look is perfect paired with a slimmer profile dress pant, particularly one of the more technical "no iron, no wrinkle,

washable" pants out there, either in a modern slash pocket or the ever popular five-pocket jean style. There are some really great pant options available today, and please don't be afraid of a little pattern! As always, pants are all about fit … a clean profile, not too tight, but not too much extra material either. Many of these wrinklefree fabrics mean you can work all day and still look great on the way home! We're almost there! Now we need a dressy sport shirt, and there are no shortage of options available today. We're seeing a shift from bolder patterns to looks we refer to as "neats:" small checks, herringbones, nailheads and birds-eyes. Cooler weather often means loftier fabrics with more texture than you'd expect in a traditional dress shirt. And that's a sophisticated look that's getting lots of attention this year. An alternative might also be a lightweight wool, long sleeve polo shirt … or even a turtleneck. The heathered textures and earthy colours available in these just sing fall, and you're well on your way to being right on trend for fall 2018. Let's not forget the accessories! Given no tie, it leaves lots of room for a great belt, and maybe take it up a notch with a nice pocket square! And shoes! It's a banner year for business casual, comfort, colour, practicality, and style.

Advice from Dr. Braun for a Cavity Free Holiday Season by Phillip Tiicham Muir

As swimsuit season comes to an end, the sweet treat season is just beginning. Halloween is approaching, and Thanksgiving, then Christmas will soon follow. With this in mind, the Sidney Centre Family Dentistry (SCFD) team and I thought it best to discuss oral care and hygiene. I've had the pleasure of interviewing the husband and wife team behind SCFD a few times now for In Good Health. Although Dr Jaci Sollid isn't practising at the moment, she graciously

answered my questions along with husband Dr. Loren Braun, who's holding down the fort. At some point or another we've all been told "don't eat that, it'll rot your teeth!" My goal with Jaci and Loren this month was to determine how much truth lies behind this statement. As parents we certainly indulge too, but my main concern is for children's teeth this time of year. I asked them how parents should manage the impending

onslaught of goodies. "Moderation is OK with these caveats: try to avoid really sticky sweets," Loren cautioned, "as the sugar will get deep into the grooves and fissures of your teeth." The harder it is for saliva and a toothbrush to reach it, the more likely sugar will do damage. What is it about the presence of sugar in your mouth that's so damaging though? Loren explained that "bacteria feed off it, creating an acidic environment that dissolves

tooth structure." It really is important then to brush away residue after consuming anything containing sugar, which let's be honest, is most things. Jaci and Loren also explained that eating meals is preferable to snacking, as this means sugar is introduced to your mouth less frequently. When it comes to the moderate consumption of sweets, remind your kids (and yourself ) to avoid eating them frequently throughout the day. “Instead, have a bit in one sitting, then rinse your mouth with water or brush your teeth to wash the remaining sugar out.” You can take Loren and Jaci’s advice to heart, as the parents of two homeschooled boys, the discipline is strong with them.Taking care of your family's teeth at home is an important factor, but Jaci and Loren's team want to see you on a regular basis too. They would prefer it to

be out of due diligence rather than urgency though. They recommend a cleaning at least every six months for persons of any age,

It's all about prevention, and although we may find it tedious at times, our future selves will thank us for taking care of our chompers. cover a visit to the dentist every nine to 12 months. The clever receptionists at SCFD have a couple workarounds for you though. Oftentimes when you have coverage to see a dentist every nine months for example, you may still be able to see a hygienist at the four- to five-month interval. SCFD will also gladly write a letter for you to the insurance company, advocating for more frequent cleanings. Finally I asked if there are any lesserknown tips for ensuring long term oral health. Surprise surprise, Loren recommends a balanced diet high in protein and vitamin C. He also suggests you try a power toothbrush, to better reach all areas with the correct pressure. So with responsibilities aside, we can now enjoy our holiday treats with our local family dentist's seal of approval.

Indigenous Art: Reaching for Reconciliation by Jo Barnes

Art can fascinate. It can inspire. It

can even tell a story. But did you realize it can also heal? In the midst of today's movement towards First Nation reconciliation, art is a powerful tool that indigenous artists are using to express their thoughts and feelings, connect with the community, and help all of us move towards this goal. "Art is a healing tool and gives you a platform. Art saves lives," shares Rose Spahan, Indigenous artist, curator and teacher. This reconciliation art is beginning to appear and inspire throughout the greater Victoria area. Rose Spahan, for example, is the curator for "Sacred," a multimedia display that opened in June 2018 at Victoria City Hall. The exhibit, created by Mohawk, Saanich, Cree, Métis, Navajo and Coast Salish artists, includes an LED light painting, exterior projection, photographic and silkscreened prints and an indoor mural. "The name 'Sacred' is about honouring the old homestead, the lands and people of the Songhees and Lekwungen territory. It's about reclaiming the space situated on Lekwungen territory. It's also about reclaiming the sacred within you when you're creating art," says Rose. Art is a way for First Nations artists not only to reflect on their history and perspective to the larger community, but to rediscover and learn that heritage. "By exposing students to the process of creating, making mistakes, accepting change, starting over, improvising or not giving up have all been great additional benefits to the lesson itself. My own sister, an emerging visual artist, is discovering her indigenous heritage, culture and language through her art work," says Jacqueline Jim, a SENĆOŦEN immersion teacher at ȽÁU, WELṈEW̱ Tribal School in Brentwood Bay. Art is also an amazing tool for these artists to process their life experiences and help others understand their reality. "It's an effective way for Indigenous people to reach their community and express themselves," comments Diane Thorp, President, ArtSea Community Arts Council. An excellent example is "Raven and the Eyes of Stolen Children," a fabric sculpture by Coast Salish artist Kathleen (Kathy) Rose Sears (above right). Awarded the Colin Graham Award for Innovative Work at the 2017 Sidney Fine Art Show, the powerful piece features a black raven perched around a large wooden cross, a rosary hanging from the raven's beak. The raven's body is detailed with blue fabric pieces bearing red ribbons and eyes. "The red ribbons represent the children who survived the school (residential schools) only to take their own lives later on. The beads are actually a rosary that is meant to represent the church." The sculpture was lauded not only for its artistic presentation,

but also its cultural significance. "This piece reflects the Church and the cost to First Nations Peoples. It's a strong piece about residential schools and we knew it needed to be moved to an appropriate location. So, ArtSea purchased the piece. Curator Nick Tuele helped foster a connection with UVic First People's House and we gifted the piece to them. It's now on display," says Diane. For its artist, the creative journey meant revisiting painful personal life experiences. "Creating art like ‘Raven’ opens a floodgate of emotions and tears," says Kathy. Hearing her tell her life story can be a deeply affecting experience. Kathy shares about the horrors of the residential school system and precarious foster care, all of which led to mental issues and abuse through many generations in her family. Art for her is a way to process her life and also to educate others. "I'm hoping that people will actually see the horrors that happened," she says. "I'm hoping that people will stop saying, 'Oh, get over it!' We wouldn't say it to a Jewish person or anyone else, would we?" Reconciliation for this woman is not just a concept or political policy; it is very personal. "It is time to start healing from the past," she says. Healing begins with the art itself. So take the time to look at these pieces yourself. You'll hear the voices of the artists. Photo by Nunn Other Photography. OCTOBER 2018 | SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA 37

The Centre of Your Experience

What’s Happening at the Mary Winspear Centre

Hotel California Back by popular demand the Mary Winspear Centre presents Hotel California, the original tribute to the Eagles on October 10 and 12. For almost three decades now Hotel California have been recreating the legendary sound of The Eagles, and thrilling audiences all over the world. The band set the bar in 1986, and they’ve remained the industry leading substitute for The Eagles ever since. Playing to huge outdoor and arena audiences, sharing bills with some of rock’s legends, and going places no tribute band has gone before. A long run by any measure, but it begs the question - what makes Hotel California so special? Well, incredible lead vocal similarity, intensely accurate instrumental work, soaring harmonies, and top flight live performances, just for starters. These are the band’s hallmarks, and the foundation on which their reputation has been built. With over a century of collective professional experience in the band today, they’re still going stronger than ever in 2018. The experience of a Hotel California show isn’t just about the band – it’s about celebrating the music and the memories,

and the band gets the audiences involved and on their feet! Close your eyes and you’re right back there… If you love The Eagles, then welcome to the Hotel California – you’ve just found the next-best thing.

James Keelaghan & Jez Lowe The Deep Cove Folk Music Society proudly presents James Keelaghan and Jez Lowe on Thursday, October 18 at the Charlie White Theatre. Two songwriters emerged on to the international acoustic music touring circuit in the late 1990s who, despite their different backgrounds and places of origin, have established a musical relationship that has lasted more than twenty years. James Keelaghan comes from Alberta, Canada, and has established himself the world over as a writer and performer of considerable skill. Jez Lowe is from County Durham in North East England, and is widely acknowledged as something of a national treasure on the UK folk circuit and beyond. How these two men have come to tour together, sing together and even write together, is a remarkable testament to their shared experience and mutual admiration and empathy. James and Jez began their partnership somewhat casually, when they found themselves

on the same touring circuit of Australian folk festivals back in 1997. Their first formal tour together took place in 2001, a month-long haul across America and Canada. It is a partnership which has continued sporadically ever since.

The Mousetrap The Mousetrap, by Agatha Christie, holds a Guinness World Record for most performances in London. The classic murder mystery centers around a group of strangers stranded in a boarding house during a snow storm when they discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. The suspects include newlyweds who run the house, an aloof woman with a curious background, an architect who seems better equipped to be a chef, a retired army major, a strange little man who claims his car has overturned and a jurist who makes life miserable for everyone. One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last nerve shredding moment the identity and the motive are finally revealed. Performances of The Mousetrap will take place October 25 to 28 at 7:30 pm and October 27 & 28 at 2:00 pm.

Jimmy Rankin Jimmy Rankin brings his Moving East Tour to Sidney on Friday, November 2. Now this is big news. One of the true originals in Canadian music has moved from Nashville to Nova Scotia, and is celebrating with music only he could make. Jimmy Rankin’s new Moving East is pure East Coast, a homecoming album featuring true stories, tall tales and bittersweet ballads,

and the classic folk-rock sound that Rankin helped pioneer. Just at a time when people are searching out authentic cultural voices, strong stories and well-crafted songs, Rankin has made an unapologetically East Coast folk-rock record, with a raw, unsentimental and current edge. “I’m putting the party back in the kitchen” quips Rankin. “With Moving East, I was trying to distil the fabric of Maratime culture

to see day after day of sunshine this past summer, I, for one, am relieved to experience some cooler, wetter weather. Time to snuggle up to those we love and dig the fuzzy blankets out of the closet. by Shauna Dorko The fall is my favourite Owner, Sidney SeniorCare time of year, with the scent of rain and turning leaves in the air, coupled with the culinary smells of warm apple pies and harvest spices – I love it all! There are some of us, however, who find this often drastic change of season a tough transition. As the weather becomes more inclement, seniors may tend to retreat indoors, leading potentially to depression and loneliness which they can be prone to. The great thing about fall is that there are plenty of activities in which to include your favourite senior: Gardening. Of course, as this is the "harvest" season, the seniors in your life may need some help with their veggie gardens and/or planting the hardier versions that can survive the winter months. Other plants and flowers may need to be winterized: pulled out, cut back and otherwise prepared for the cooler weather to come. This is a golden opportunity for fresh air, light exercise and productive companionship for you and your special senior(s). Fall Fairs and Festivals. With autumn harvests come fall festivals to celebrate those harvests. Our local community features engaging harvest-themed activities for all ages. Bring a senior or two and enjoy a farm tour, a leisurely stroll through a corn maze or pumpkin patch, or a live outdoor band. Indulge in seasonal delights and local produce at our neighbourhood farms – apple picking is not only super fun, but the resulting bounty can be pretty tasty too! Pumpkin Carving. With so many local pumpkin patches, who can resist bringing one home to transform into a spooky jacko'-lantern. Most seniors have decorated more than a few in their lifetime and, chances are, they still have some pretty creative ideas. A wonderful bonding activity for children (and virtually anyone young at heart) and seniors to do together. The bonus? Toasted pumpkin seeds, or, even better, homemade pumpkin pie. Harvest Dinners. Many seniors are fantastic cooks and have old family recipes which have been handed down through the generations. Thanksgiving is a great opportunity to not only invite a senior for dinner, but offer to help them prepare their favourite fall dish to bring. Sharing the harvest and food from our table is a tradition rooted in family and community. Thanks to the seniors in our lives, we can carry those beautiful traditions forward. Stride Properties:

Tackling the Housing Crisis Greater Victoria has one of the lowest vacancy rates in the country – with a serious lack of affordable housing and a vacancy rate of just 0.7%, this is an extremely challenging market for renters. Stride Properties is working to change that. In the past year – its first year of business – Stride has been able to receive approval by Jesse Holth

for 138 new rental homes located here on the Peninsula. "That's an accomplishment I'm really proud of," says Matt Peulen, Founder and President of Stride Properties. "Stride has been able to accomplish a lot in our first year because of the collaborative approach we've taken on our projects." By partnering with the Greater Victoria Housing Society, Stride has Affordable Rental Homes West Saanich Road

spearheaded two projects on the Saanich Peninsula that will provide 138 new rental units, including 80 affordable rentals. When completed, this will be the most rentals built in the area in almost two decades. The first development, under construction at 7247 West Saanich Road, was approved in 2017. It will include a 40-unit affordable rental building, as well as restoration and conversion of the historic Verdier House (pictured at bottom left) into eight market rental homes. The ability to protect and preserve a heritage home, and gain approvals for the new project at 1909 Prosser Road, is largely due to Stride's innovative partnership with the Greater Victoria Housing Society. According to Peulen, "[if you] focus on building great relationships with neighbourhoods and other partners, you end up with projects that make communities better." At the Prosser Road development, the property will include garden plots, a walking path, a children's play area, green spaces and sitting areas, and fruit and vegetable plants in the landscaping. The space will be designed to cater to families, seniors and young people. "Stride is all about a quality build, a well-designed space and a property that complements the neighbourhood where it's located," says Peulen. The development is located on a major transit route that links to Sidney and Victoria, and will include 55 Modo car share memberships for the residents. These homes will also be located within walking and cycling distance of Saanichton village, minutes away from a variety of

employers. Peulen makes the point that "living and working in the same community results in fewer vehicle trips and greenhouse gas emissions. It's also an opportunity for local businesses [to] attract and retain talent when attainable rental housing is located nearby." The development will include a variety of studios, one- and twobedroom apartments, and two-level townhomes. Connectivity with the neighbourhood and alternative transportation are central to the design, with six electric-car charging stations available and a public bicycle repair station. "I've been very fortunate to work with great developers and business people who have helped me to gain the broad skill set that's required in real estate development," says Peulen. "We've worked closely with neighbours, council and the business community to design a project that has the potential to make a significant positive impact in Central Saanich." The Prosser and West Saanich Road developments are hopefully the first of many such projects. Stride Properties provides a housing list on their website (www. strideproperties.com), for anyone interested in updates on rental unit availability – this includes rentals in Central Saanich, as well as Stride's rental developments in other communities. For a list of subsidized and non-subsidized rental homes available from the Greater Victoria Housing Society, visit www.greatervichousing.org.

NAFLD:

by Dr. Kristen Bovee Peninsula Naturopathic Clinic Hydrate IV Wellness Centre

A New Disease Epidemic

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition that many people have but may not know they have it. It is slowly coming to the forefront in health care because of its prevalence and impact on the health of individuals who have it. It is a condition I am seeing more and more of in my practice and it's often overlooked in a patient's long-term health. What is NAFLD? NAFLD occurs when fat is deposited in the liver, which is not due to alcohol consumption. It is a chronic disease associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. It is a silent condition: unless a person has an ultrasound or biopsy on the liver to identify its presence, one may be likely unaware that they have it. To make matters more disconcerting, its prevalence has skyrocketed significantly since the 2000's. Why is it important to be aware of NAFLD? Obesity is continually on the rise around the world. We have taken to unhealthy, unnatural eating patterns that are killing us. Up to 80% of obese people have NAFLD; as a result, it is now considered more serious than viral-induced hepatitis. It is the leading cause of chronic liver disease. Causes of NAFLD. The cause of NAFLD is largely dietary and lifestyle related. People who consume large amounts of refined foods, including carbohydrates, simple sugars and high fructose corn syrup, seem to have the most impact on the disease. Lack of exercise contributes to the condition. There is a genetic link where families with type II diabetes show a higher incidence of NAFLD in family members. NASH (Non alcoholic steatohepatitis) is the most severe form of NAFLD. It is where inflammation occurs in the liver causing liver cell damage. This can lead to cancer and liver failure. Causes of NASH include gall bladder disease, rapid weight loss, the use of medications such as methotrexate, synthetic estrogens, tamoxifen and corticosteroids. What can be done? In order to reduce your risk of developing this chronic illness, there are many things you can do for prevention. 1. Maintain a healthy weight. Many of the fad diets out there these days are not considered a healthy way to get to the weight that is best for you. Instead, consider having a consultation with a licensed naturopathic doctor or nutritionist to determine the best way to lose the weight. Losing weight too quickly can trigger fatty liver. 2. Exercising will not only help you lose those extra pounds, it will also support the metabolism of the fatty deposits in the liver to dissolve. It supports circulation, which will help the liver process toxins more effectively and get the body in to a healthier state faster. 3. Consume foods that support a healthy liver function. The

following lists are foods that have shown to improve fatty liver and prevent it from becoming diseased: • High fiber foods such as oats, apples and beets • High antioxidant foods such as green tea, spinach, blueberries, grapefruit and brazil nuts • Being hydrated and consuming healthy fats such as olive oil and omega 3's from fish Our liver is an organ we can't survive without. Given the right support, however, it can work at its optimum for long-lasting health and vitality.

Just Strumming Along With the words of my wise 12-year-old in my head: "mum, don't be nervous, we're all beginners when we start, and your teacher will be nice," I set off for the Peninsula Academy of Music Arts, with a borrowed guitar in hand. Of course he would know: he's been a student at PAMA for the past four years. You might remember that for our October Arts issue last year I spent the day sculpting and painting at Cinnamon Hill Studio; this year's challenge is more daunting for me. I haven't ever really played an instrument. Though I do love music, I have a real fear of making a fool of myself! I've been scheduled with Aaron Watson, one of PAMA's longtime teachers. Nice doesn't even begin to describe Aaron – a more encouraging, non-intimidating teacher would be hard to imagine. We get started right away with the basics of the instrument, how to hold it, what happens where and yes, why don't I just try plucking and strumming some strings. Phew – the nervous energy quickly dissipates as I listen carefully to Aaron's descriptions of how the guitar's sound is created, and get a sense of his philosophy, which

really seems to be based on an absolute passion for music, and belief that everyone can enjoy and benefit from it. There wasn't time for me to be self conscious either. Taking my lead from Aaron, I copied his finger movements, plucking up and down the scale. Before I knew it I was playing a basic chord, then another and then – big leap – playing them in a sequence that I could recognize as a tune! Not bad for a 30-minute lesson. Most importantly, by the time I left I really wanted to be able to play more. Lucky for me then, that I got to go back the next night and try a group lesson in Aaron's beginner guitar class. He had informed me that learning with a group is a great way to let go of the feeling of intimidation and just relax into it. I had my reservations again: what if everyone was better than me; what if I held them back? There was nothing to be afraid of though, as I joined a group of five other beginners on their second lesson of the block. I quickly discovered that the benefit of the group is that everyone is concentrating so hard on their own fingers, there's no time to look at anyone else! If anything it's even less intimidating than a one-on-one lesson, as the learning really comes from playing along and there's more time for that. There was a little theory on the practice room whiteboard, but mainly we played. CCCC, FFCC, CCGG, CCFF – so it wasn't a symphony, but it was most definitely music. I felt wonderful, and wonderfully proud, being able to strum along, and hum along to a tune I recognized. How amazing it must feel to be able to play anything you want! We often encourage our kids to try new things with the advice that it is easier to learn new skills with a young, flexible brain. But I don't think it should put us off trying when we're older. Why should the kids get all the fun and satisfaction? For more information, visit www.peninsulaacademy.ca. Photo by www.nuttycake.com.

BEHIND THE SCENES

An A-MAZE-ing Halloween at Pendray Farm Do you remember the scene from the movie The Shining where Jack Nicholson's creepy character is chasing his small son through a giant maze with an axe? The dimly-lit, snow-covered path full of unpredictable twists and turns kept the audience on the edge of their seats as they realized the little boy could easily have gotten lost or worse, end up trapped at a dead end in the maze. Luckily, it was not the boy who got lost but rather the deranged father. Ever since The Shining and that scene hit the movie theatres back in 1980, mazes have taken on an entirely new meaning for many n people, and in particular, cornepmazes aratio have become a favourite x pr a t l a n perso ry by Paula Kully

Halloween activity. However, the world's first cornfield maze wasn't created until 1993 by Don Frantz and Adrian Fisher at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania. Here on the Saanich Peninsula, we have the Pendray Farm Corn Maze going into its fourth year of operation. It attracts over 20,000 visitors and is the largest corn maze on Vancouver Island, covering 15 acres, consisting of three separate mazes with over 10 km of trails. Once inside, each maze includes a corresponding game with one created just for children. As well, there is a one-kilometre walking trail around the perimeter for people who do not want to risk getting lost. The farm also offers a concession, a 12- by 12-foot "corn box" (think sandbox) filled with five tons of kernels, and a

barrel train pulled by a tractor for kids. The Pendray family are pioneers who have been farming in North Saanich for five generations. They raise both dairy and beef cattle as well as grow hay and corn. Sarah Pendray was first encouraged to create a corn maze in 2015 when the farm underwent a considerable downsize that resulted in an excess cornfield. At the time, a friend made the suggestion to turn the field into a corn maze. Despite some initial reservations, his enthusiasm for the project soon became contagious, and the planning began. As might be expected, creating a giant maze is no easy undertaking. It involves the work of Manager Sarah Pendray, artists, and between 10 to 15 staff when the maze is open. The process begins with seed selection, which is based on the corn variety's ability to grow a strong stalk and remain green into the fall. Following that, the design is determined. Each year, the farm creates a new theme, something they feel is representative of the community. Last year, in honour of Canada 150, the design included a hockey player and bear. This year’s theme is “we love farming.” It was chosen because the Pendrays feel farming is important and they like to share that passion with the community. Pendray Farms enlists the services of Idaho based "MazePlay" to bring their vision to life. The company takes care of everything from providing a rendering of the maze concept design to creating the maze. This year, for the first time, the maze design was planted in May rather than cut into the fully-grown cornfield. This means less seed is going to waste as the maze grew into being with the paths already in place. Once complete, the maze may look like nothing more than a big field of corn with paths cut through it, but when you see it from above, there is a clear, accurate image. So, the question remains, "how is it done?" Sarah explains: "The actual creation of the maze on the ground is somewhat of a trade secret, but it is done with a GPS and tractor." If you are planning a trip to the Pendray Farm Corn Maze this Halloween season, Sarah recommends bringing mud boots and water. Admission is $12 for 13 and older, $5 for children three to 12, and free for children under two. The maze is open to the public until Sunday, October 28 on Fridays from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Panorama Recreation:

Volunteering – Getting as Good as You Give by Jo Barnes

She is a program coordinator. She is a valuable staff member. She is a permanent employee. And she started as a volunteer. Like many on the Panorama Recreation team, Hannah Nawroth, Community Recreation Coordinator, began her career there by serving as a volunteer. Not only can it be fun and a great way to develop skills and make connections, but at Panorama, there is a diversity of opportunities for volunteering available. "Volunteer placements at the Centre vary in the departments of fitness and weights, aquatics, arena, special events, and with various youth and adult community recreation programs. New opportunities are posted seasonally," shares Hannah. So why volunteer? What are the benefits? "From gaining employability skills and professional experience through training and volunteer experiences, to meeting new people and having the opportunity to give back to your community, the benefits of volunteering are numerous," says Hannah. When you participate as a volunteer you can share your interests with others or further develop your abilities. Do you like working with children? Are you artistic and enjoy face painting? Are you passionate about health and like working with older adults? Maybe you're a student trying to decide on a career. As a volunteer, you'll experience a variety of situations and can get an idea of activities you enjoy versus ones that don't appeal. You can also fulfill the volunteer hours needed for graduation. The minimum age to serve as a volunteer at Panorama is 14 years, and there are a host of possible positions from which to choose every season. Current opportunities can be viewed on the Panorama website; just look under the Volunteer Opportunities section at https://www.crd. bc.ca/panorama/about-us/volunteer-opportunities So where and how do you begin? It's easy: application forms are available online. You'll need to provide contact information, areas of interest, background in terms of skills and experience, availability and references. Applications are reviewed and then usually a recreation coordinator will contact you regarding suitability. Once an appropriate opportunity comes available, you will be asked to submit a criminal record check and to complete an orientation, then will start your volunteering journey!

desperate when they call me in their search for a doctor. I often say: “I’m just the fundraiser!” In my job, I’ve learned so much about healthcare issues (thanks to much help from Dr. Google), and I’ve talked to many local doctors about the issues they and the Saanich Peninsula Hospital face. Unfortunately, this doesn’t give me any additional clout in helping friends and acquaintances find one. While I might be of no help in that respect, I have been watching the problem of physician shortages grow and develop for many years and have tried to figure out a way to be useful. And Foundation Board members, also seeing the problem, have long advocated for more students and residents in our community to “test the waters” before setting up a practice (I mean, who wouldn’t love it here, if only they tried it for a bit!). The South Island Division of Family Practice, which is a notfor-profit society led by and for family physicians practicing in the South Vancouver Island area, was also keenly aware of the problem of physician shortages due to retirements and their members began discussing what could be done. They very generously included me in some early deliberations where I quickly assumed the role of cheerleader (“you find the solution and I’ll fundraise for it”). These discussions led to the founding of the Saanich Peninsula Primary Health Care Society, and the recruitment of several community members who wanted to help build it.

Shortages: Our Future As you may know, the Society was founded in 2015 and began operations at Peninsula Medical in Sidney in 2016, after it was registered as a society in B.C., but before it achieved charitable status. Success in matching doctors and patients (particularly those most vulnerable in the community) was almost immediate, but financial success was more elusive in that first year. To my chagrin, I learned a fundamental fact about charities (one that I should have known sooner, I admit): our charity can only provide funds of any kind to another charity. So until the Society achieved charitable status, SPHF could do nothing. A number of community members loaned funds to the Society, and then the Town of Sidney provided a significant loan to ensure the doors stayed open until charitable status was achieved. Which it was, in April of 2017. To date, more than 3,000 people have found a doctor at Peninsula Medical, a fact of which everyone associated with the Society is terribly proud. However, this whole situation is a bit like the game of “whac-a-mole.” Every time you deal with one issue, two more pop up. And so it is right now, with the loss of three physicians and a walk-in clinic in Sidney. This year, the SPHF Board decided that, if the goal of its founders was to ensure the best possible health care on the Saanich Peninsula, then it should respond to the problems in the community now. We don’t pretend that we can solve the problem overnight. But we are determined to help, by talking to our wonderful donors about turning their financial power and love of community towards this current healthcare crisis.

Secret Healing Powers at Saanich Peninsula Hospital What little-known secret boosts the spirits of the patients, staff and visitors at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital (SPH)? A variety of soothing and entertaining pieces of visual art, created by members of the Saanich Peninsula Arts and Crafts Society (SPAC). In earlier days, SPAC artwork was exhibited in the "old hospital," and was reintroduced in 1978, soon after the building of the new SPH. At the time, SPAC members Mary Feesey and Pat Tregett met with the Hospital's administrator to discuss "hanging art for the patients to adorn the walls," thus continuing the connection between the community and its hospital. There are several science-based studies that have proven that visual art can reduce levels of patients' pain, stress and anxiety, and may reduce their hospital stays. Art can also be a favourable distraction for staff and visitors, offering a sense of calm and peace. The SPAC Hospital Exhibit volunteer committee ensures that the accepted artwork is of a professional standard, reflects positive and uplifting colours and themes. Only glass-covered artwork is hung in patient unit hallways, in response to infection control requirements. Acrylic and oil paintings are exhibited in public hallways and public waiting rooms. Over 100 paintings consistently decorate several hospital walls. Patients, staff and visitors greatly enjoy the wide variety of art on display.

Artwork is regularly sold, with 10 percent of the value of each painting donated to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation (SPHF). Every six months, there is a complete changeover of artwork, so highly anticipated that staff arrange tours for the residents in SPH's Extended Care wing. And during the actual changeover, it's not uncommon for patients, visitors and staff to bemoan the removal of favourite paintings! This spring marked the first joint art show with the residents of Extended Care. Their painting lessons at the McTavish Academy of Art paid off, as the SPAC / SPH show and sale was a creative success. So, the next time you find yourself wandering the halls of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital, take a moment to look at the art. You will discover its entertaining and affirming secrets, and who knows, you may enjoy it so much you will want to purchase a painting to grace your home! Celebrating its 65th anniversary this year, the Saanich Peninsula Arts and Crafts Society is a thriving, industrious and cooperative community group and welcomes new members from the Peninsula, Greater Victoria, south of the Malahat and from the Gulf islands. INSIDE OUT

Structural Pain: by Alyssa Madill Reach Health

Your recurring knee pain could be more than that old hockey injury of yours. Maybe it has to do with how much sugar you ate on the weekend, or how many microwave dinners you've had this month. When there's pain and discomfort anywhere in the body, it's important to address it locally and systemically. By systemically, I mean investigating the internal environment of the body; this is the holistic perspective, which begins by looking at what is on your plate. All foods that we consume have many descriptive properties and can affect your body in a number of ways. Food can be whole or processed, alkalizing or acidifying, anti-inflammatory or proinflammatory, nutrient-dense or lacking, local or imported. For each of these pairs, the former is generally preferred over the latter. For optimal health, we should try to consume whole foods that promote a more alkaline, anti-inflammatory internal environment; most vegetables and fruits will do this, especially the dark leafy greens. So what does it mean to be acidifying or alkalizing? Do you remember learning about acids and bases (alkaloids) in high school? It's a measurement of the concentration of hydrogen atoms; this ranges from zero to 14, with zero being the most acidic, seven being neutral and 14 being the most basic or alkaline. Each part of our body functions within a certain pH range, with our blood having the narrowest window between 7.35 to 7.45. Our body will do whatever it can to maintain the pH of our bloodstream, for our survival. This often puts strain on the rest of the system such as by

What Does Diet Have to Do With It? pulling minerals from our bones. The reason for explaining all of this is that many people have found themselves in a dietary routine that is both acidifying and inflammatory: they're eating processed foods, excessive animal products, sugar, and refined grains, and minimal fruits and vegetables. All of this will greatly disrupt their internal environment, promoting chronic inflammation and leaving them prone to pain, fatigue and disease. I have seen this firsthand in practise, with many patients' symptoms worsening in January after an overdose of treats over the holidays. Having an imbalanced and unhealthy internal environment has been shown to slow healing processes, increase pain and decrease energy as well as quality of life. So what can be done? When you have pain, it is important to address with manual therapy and individualized exercise. But you can also take control of your health by avoiding processed foods and sugar, decreasing your intake of animal products and grains (focusing on the quality of these, in smaller quantities!), increasing your fruit and vegetable intake, and staying hydrated. Eating a variety of fresh produce will provide the antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that your body requires. There are also specific anti-inflammatory foods that can be added to your diet including ginger, turmeric, beets, parsley, leafy greens and lemon. I challenge you to this: start your day with a glass of lemon water every day for the next week and see how you feel!

On August 31 Hughesman Morris CPA's raised over $3,000 at their ninth annual Pancake Breakfast to help equip students of Sidney Elementary with school supplies. The event has been in support of Sidney Elementary students for two years now. This year it took place at the school itself, where there was more than enough space, and a place for kids to play. The results were extremely positive. They had their best attendance yet, and raised enough money to ensure every student has the school supplies needed for success in the classroom.

NEW TO THE LOCATION Sidney is Rising High Despite mixed council and public opinions, The Town of Sidney has passed a development proposal for the old Sidney Fire Hall location. Plans are for a $9.9-million, six-storey development, which will contain 22,000 square feet of ground floor commercial space, 82 condos, and an additional three-storey office building. The proposal also includes 20 Modo car share memberships.

A New Home for Sally The old Brentwood Bay Pharmasave location (vacant since their September 2017 relocation), will become a new home to The Salvation Army. The "Sally Ann" was previously located next door to its new site at 7177 West Saanich Road. Although the new space is approximately the same size, it is a single-level unit. The old unit had a ramp to a lower level, which took up valuable floor space. They now have all new fixtures, flooring and improved heating and air conditioning, which make for a much nicer shopping experience. The thrift shop aims to have its new doors open by the time you read this.

Focus Hair Design The team at Focus Hair Design is very proud to announce our nomination for a Crystal Award for Green Business of the Year! Since November 2016, owners Clare Wedgwood and Mahrisa Raiska have implemented changes to reduce our salon's carbon footprint. Being a Certified Green Circle Salon means that our salon waste is diverted from landfills and waterways. Instead of creating methane gas in the landfill, the hair we collect is made into hair booms that are used to mop up oil spills. All other salon waste, from leftover colour products to used foils, vinyl gloves and more, is collected for recycling and repurposing. We have also installed an energy efficient nozzle head which reduces the amount of water used by 65%! We use green products and compost. Our weekly salon garbage has been reduced dramatically to one small bag! Working together for many years, our team is uniquely bonded, making our salon environment a bright, happy place to work and for our clients to be a part of. Blackberry Apple Vegan Crumble we've had! The bounty from the garden is abundant everywhere. Blackberries have flourished throughout the heat; they are my favorite berry. What a wonderful addition to a salad. At the recent Flavour Trails gala dinner, my salad incorporated 13 elements from the garden with a by Laura Waters splash of roasted blackberries on the side Snowdon House for flavour and colour. I also use roasted Gourmet & Gifts blackberries in salads and sorbets in the summer. Roasting the blackberries on a cookie sheet for 10 to 15 minutes at 200° cooks the seeds that are somewhat difficult for some people to digest. To think something classified as a noxious weed can give so much goodness. I have entertained the thought of hiring a herd of goats to do blackberry management on my farm – they love the whole blackberry plant, thorns and all! Goats also have an enzyme in their salvia that impedes the return of the blackberries; some municipalities are hiring them now instead of using chemicals. Many years ago I had milk goats. I loved milking them and enjoyed their incredible personalities. A project on my agenda for next spring and summer: "blackberry management."

Sing Out for Joy! Eyes light up when choir members talk about the joy of harmonizing with other singers, the mental challenge of learning their part and the social aspect of meeting others with similar interests. Research has found that choral singing can also boost the immune system (University of Frankfurt), improve mood and lower stress levels. With the variety of choirs in the area, there's no need to hide your singing voice in the shower. Few community choirs require an audition, just a love of singing. No matter your favourite music, there's a choir to fit – from classical to show tunes, world music, pop and indie. "I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't sing," says Daphne Hughes, whose family owns an organic farm on the Peninsula. Not satisfied belonging to one choir, Hughes sings in the Victoria Philharmonic Choir, Via Choralis and the Peninsula Singers. Hughes says: "I find it a good mental challenge to learn and memorize the different songs and I love to harmonize my voice with others." Via Choralis, led by Artistic Director Nicholas Fairbank, is a Peninsula mixed-voice auditioned chamber choir that sings classical and new Canadian compositions. Some pieces are by Fairbank himself, a renowned composer and arranger. The choir performs four concerts a year at St. Elizabeth Church in Sidney, including the Messiah every third year. For a change of pace, Hughes sings alto in the Peninsula Singers, led by Artistic Director Lena Palermo. This popular non-auditioned group performs show tunes complete with choreography and costume changes. Started in 1980, the Peninsula Singers has grown to more than 60 singers, both men and women, whose shows regularly sell out at the Mary Winspear Centre. Sight reading ability is not required as the singers learn their songs "off book" by listening to a recording of their part (soprano, alto, tenor or bass). Most choirs expect a commitment of two hours a week at rehearsals and additional time at home to practice the pieces. Some, like Via Choralis, also rehearse with local orchestras or instrumentalists. A new non-auditioned community choir has started this fall on the Peninsula. Wavelengths is a spin off from the Monday night rehearsal group of Victoria's Gettin' Higher Choir. Wavelengths' artistic director is Denis Donnelly, who with Siobhan Robinsong, had by Gillian Crowley

previously co-directed the GHC for many years. He appreciates that choral singing can be spiritually uplifting and makes sure everyone feels welcome and comfortable. Merrie Houghton, a long-time member of the Getting' Higher choir, and now part of Wavelengths, says "I find Denis to be very open and inclusive. He creates such a welcoming atmosphere and I've learned so much about music from him." During his music career, Donnelly has been a singer, instrumentalist, arranger, composer, conductor and a past director of the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Another Wavelength's member, Ted Woynillowicz, says he also enjoys the social side of belonging to a choir. "My wife and I have made new friendships, and several of us cycle and go on trips together." In fact several choir singers mention they have met their life partners through choirs they've joined. Woynillowicz, a tenor, says he initially lacked confidence about his voice but being placed with small groups of other more experienced singers helped him get over this concern. "It's like dolphins learning to swim, they are supported by the other dolphins." Houghton adds, "The sound of the human voice in harmony is exquisite…and as a tenor I love to hear that deep resonance in my chest when we sing the low notes together." She sings tenor instead of alto as there's usually a three-to-one ratio of women to men in local choirs. "Unfortunately, our culture tends to stomp on people's natural interest in singing, especially the men," Donnelly says. To overcome this he conducts male voice workshops to help men build confidence and a sense of community. Wavelength's repertoire will include folk, pop and songs from other cultures. The rehearsals take place in the Unitarian Church on West Saanich Road, convenient for residents of the Peninsula. These choirs are just the tip of the iceberg. SEASIDE HOMES

Art, Hygge, and Great Bones

70 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | OCTOBER 2018

STORY BY JANICE HENSHAW PHOTOS BY NUNN OTHER PHOTOGRAPHY AND MARION EVAMY

A gorgeous home filled with light, intriguing art, a courtyard for shade, no grass to mow and a fantastic ocean view. Was it the luck of the draw to buy this place or a manifestation of the owners’ desires? Marion Evamy and Bobb Hamilton own the Red Art Gallery, formerly located on Oak Bay Avenue. Now, their beautiful home on Surfside Place in Sidney doubles as their new gallery space. Friends from Oak Bay asked them “Have you lost your minds, moving to Sidney?” But after seeing the newly-renovated waterfront home, they now appreciate “the gem we have uncovered,” said Marion. And as far as Sidney goes, Marion and Bobb love the town and appreciate the warm welcome shown by their neighbours and community. Original hardwood floors, richly coloured rugs from Nepal, sculptures and artwork are all a feast for the eyes. Marion’s paintings and their personal collection of over 35 other artists are displayed throughout the home. 65 paintings hang on the walls of the main floor alone. Marion notes that number doesn’t even include the sculptures and 3-D pieces! “Hygge” is a Danish term and is often associated with one’s physical surroundings – to create a harmonious atmosphere, a feeling of warmth, a mood of contentment (from The Book of Hygge: The Danish Art of Living Well by Louisa Thomsen Brits). Bobb describes the “hygge” in this home as palpable – from a gathering place for family and friends to the natural materials, rock and cedar, used in the structure of the house, to the generous space that shows off the extensive art collection. Instead of a “great room,” there are numerous sitting areas comfortably arranged with eclectic furniture throughout the home, outside on the decks, and in the tree-shaded courtyard. When you are looking for a new home, it’s funny how, every so often, not getting the house you first wanted ends up being a gift. Marion and Bobb started house hunting in 2016 after their interior renovation plans were turned down by the planning department in Oak Bay. They decided to change their parameters and looked at property for sale on the water in Cordova Bay, the Lochside area, Sidney, North Saanich and Deep Cove. At that time, Bobb said it was a heated real estate market: “We found ourselves in competing offer situations,” and they did not meet with success. While on holiday in Mexico, Marion and Bobb thought more about the type of home they wanted. As a fun exercise, Marion suggested they independently draw up

a floor plan showing what they would like to see in their “dream” home. Their two sketches turned out to be very similar. Three days before they were due to come home, they saw the Surfside home listed as an estate sale. There were no photos of the interior, no furniture, and they found it hard to gauge what was really there. They flew home and viewed the house as soon as they landed. As the daughter of an architect, and a former realtor herself, Marion instantly recognized that the house had good bones. “There are a lot of architectural components that make a striking difference to the house. It has a generous entrance, wide hallways and stairwells, an amazing quality of light from the skylights, and the public and private areas of the house are well separated. The gorgeous ocean view is taken advantage of from every angle.” Local architect John Bell (whose projects included Sidney’s iconic fishing pier, the Arts Centre, and the Sidney Lawn Bowling Club House) had designed the 3,000-square-foot 1.5-storey home. It sits on a pie-shaped lot and has an expansive 112 feet of oceanfront. Bobb said that, as soon as he stood on the threshold and saw the ocean through the windows, he knew it was the house for them. They made an offer that day. Patience was required though, because there was an open house scheduled for the weekend. But, serendipitously, Saturday brought lots of snow, Sunday, the Super Bowl, and by Monday, the house was theirs.

“Sooner or later, Karma works for you – and the ideal home crosses your path,” said Bobb. “The floor plans we had drawn up while in Mexico are eerily similar to our new home … we manifested our desires!” After the heady excitement of buying their home, Marion and Bobb had only a 45-day window to have the renovations completed before they moved in. No structural changes were made as they wanted to keep the integrity of the 1970s West Coast design, but they wanted to freshen it all up. Outside work included fencing, painting and landscaping. The major work took place inside – hardwood floors were refinished, new wool carpets laid down, and new windows installed. Electrical fixtures, plugs and switches, and the three bathrooms were updated. In the lower level, a bathtub was replaced by a steam shower. The house is heated by a new gas forced-air furnace and a stunning wood burning fireplace. Their signature Edgy Red wall (Behr) which was featured in their art gallery in Oak Bay is a highlight in the family room. Other walls in the house are painted in four different whites: Bone White, Evening White, Cloud White or White Down (Benjamin Moore). Marion and Bobb laughed as they said it was a pretty busy time for 76 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | OCTOBER 2018

When it came time to move in though, they packed and moved their treasures, all their paintings and sculptures, by themselves. “Once we put up a few works of art, the house immediately transformed from a project to a home.” The galley kitchen is next on the renovation block, as Marion and Bobb wanted to live in the house for a year so that they could get comfortable and think about how they wanted their kitchen to function. Friends suggested they open up the relatively small space and create a great room, but Marion finds the compact galley kitchen to be super-efficient, and, as a benefit, she doesn’t have to worry about the kitchen being “on show.” And it already has an incredible asset: a lovely view of the ocean. Bobb has retired from a 40-year career in real estate and now works as director of their art gallery. Marion is a multiple award-winning fine art painter who creates acrylic and mixed media paintings with figurative and abstract themes. She produces about 100 pieces a year. “I express the joy of creating as accurately as I see it – with confidence and no fear of what may appear! I use my initials (M.E.!) as my signature. The exclamation mark is my philosophy that life should be lived as an exclamation, not an explanation.” Marion is opening her studio/gallery for the ArtSea Saanich Peninsula Studio Tour, a self-guided tour of artist’s studios in Sidney, and North and Central Saanich. It takes place Saturday and Sunday, October 20 and 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet Marion and Bobb, see their beachfront home, and enjoy all her paintings! ON DESIGN

by Tracey Jones and Stacey Kaminski

Our number one question from clients when we first meet is “Why can’t I get my space to look finished?” Our answer is always the same. A home requires not only furniture that fits in terms of scale, colour and style, but more importantly it requires the detailed layers of accessories, art and décor to pull it all together and “feel” right (and done!). The styling can be the most important piece of the puzzle! It’s not about styling “secrets” … we aren’t magic, after all! But there are some definite styling constants that always work, so keep them in mind when finishing a space or changing it up. Create YOUR story. It’s your home. Find what inspires you and sprinkle the story of the people who live there throughout. We think a space should fit like a favourite pair of shoes; it looks like a million dollars and tells us who you are! If it’s forced and “not you,” that comes across in a space. Scale. Group objects you love; typically place larger items at the back and smaller at the front. Group in odd numbers – but don’t stress on that! Even is lovely and clean looking too! Fill space gently; don’t block it. Scale pieces to the surface size. Reflection. We don’t mean deep inner reflection … reflect the light everywhere! Mirrors open up a space, reflecting light and beauty. Use them often! Texture. Use lovely texture on walls, floors and surfaces! Layer neutral textures everywhere. This is again why sometimes places feel so good: texture gives a sense of cozy and warm. Books are a great way to add texture – old and weathered with a story to tell. Organics. Greenery floral and organics

Layers & Layers: A Styling Story (alive or faux) in a space = LIFE. Many times this is the element missing. Faux is fab for black thumbs (or travellers or just plain busy people) Tuck greenery into pots on a bookshelf, coffee table, kitchen counter or bedside table. Every space you live in needs a hit of fresh! Soft Décor. Pillows and throws are a great way to add the final layers on your seating areas and of course on the bed (cue groan from the men). Carry your colour scheme into the pillows and add another

one for some fun and interest! We always suggest feather inserts in throw pillows; they don’t flatten like poly inserts and can be fluffed easily! It’s amazing how changing up the pillows can change the look of a room instantly! Small investment; big reward. Go rearrange or showcase your special things! Thinking of one (or all!) of these aspects above will guide you. For more information, visit www.emarkableinteriors.ca or Interiorstylesbystacey.com

Meet Brian’s Team!

L to R: Deb, Brian and Pam

Brian has many reasons for choosing Bayshore as his home support company. He enjoys staying independent in his home due to personalized care and regular nursing visits, when required.

Pam is one of Brian’s primary caregivers, and has been seeing him now for over 10 years. If a medical concern arises, Brian knows that Pam will contact Bayshore’s RN, Debbie, who is only a phone call away. Appointments and personal meetings can sometimes interfere with regular caregiver scheduling but with the expertise of Lucia (Client Service Coordinator, at left), these are all incorporated into Brian’s daily calendar. In this month of “Giving Thanks,” Bayshore Home Health gives thanks to the privilege of being Brian’s care provider of choice and to the care team that makes it all happen.

W E ST COAST GARDENER

Your Natural Resource ... Quality Hardwood | Live-Edge Slabs | Wood Countertops

THE ART OF GROWING GARLIC Even though the growing season is drawing to a close, there is always plenty of gardening work to be done in the fall. Having gardened through the spring and summer, I find that most of these jobs have become chores to me. That said, by Matt Hall there is one task that never fails to excite and that is planting my Red Feather Horticulture favorite crop: garlic. Here are some tips to help you grow armfuls of garlic in 2019. Choosing. If you're starting from scratch, you'll probably need to buy a few heads from a garden centre unless you can mooch some off another gardener. When it comes down to picking, choose large heads with many, large cloves that are firm and have no sign of rot or mold. Each clove will become a head next year and the larger the clove, the larger the head it will become. Planting. The planting window for garlic is late September to the end of November. The perfect spot should be in a sunny location and needs to be in rich, well-draining soil. Stir in lots of well-degraded compost or manure before planting. Sow garlic by breaking the cloves apart (don't skin them) and discard any of the undersized cloves and plant them (pointy end up) two inches deep and four to six inches apart. Growing. Ideally, your soil should be rich enough from the compost added in the fall that the plants won't need too Featuring much fertilization. I usually do several foliar feeds of kelp or fish fertilizer (3-1-1) just to give them a boost from sprouting to flowering. When the garlic begins to flower, I trim off the flower (or scape) just after it loops over itself. Don't discard them as these scapes are great in a stir-fry and they also make a mean pesto. In late June, when the plants are starting to yellow and look tired, stop watering to help the bulbs mature for harvest. Harvesting. Once the garlic plants are almost entirely yellowed or fallen over (if soft-necked), you can harvest your garlic. The space that your garlic occupied is now perfect for starting some winter veggies in as you don't want to grow garlic (or onions) in the same space year after year. Storing. Freshly harvested garlic has to be cured for two to three weeks. This can be done by hanging or laying the bulbs out. Both methods work well as long the spot is dark, cool and dry. Once cured the garlic can be cut off the stem and is ready to eat. If stored well, your garlic will be perfectly edible well into next summer. Don't forget to hold back some of your heads for next year! If you need any advice for your garden, don't hesitate to drop me a line at matt@redfeatherhorticulture.com.

There was a real energy in the room for our September meeting, as we met to discuss Lori Lansens' The Mountain Story. It was a rare book club experience where all 18 people in the room had read, and on the whole thoroughly enjoyed, the chosen book. There's a pretty gripping tagline to this novel: "Five Days, Four Lost Hikers, Three Survivors." I won't be spoiling it for anyone then to mention that this is a thriller, and all along you know someone isn't going to survive the mountain. Lansens has had a successful career as a screenwriter, and her pacing is fantastic as she sets the scene and strings out the tale of Wolf Truly and his life-changing mountain experience. Of course there are twists and turns, and some red herrings as the drama proceeds. If there were any complaints from our readers it was that it maybe read too much like a movie script, with the drama foremost and little internal voice from the characters. We had to do a lot of the work of understanding motivations, emotional states and reasoning for the characters' behaviour. Wolf opens the book with a letter to his son. He's reflecting on the events that took place on the mountain and ready to tell the story that he's kept to himself for many years. He is a very likeable character, and vividly drawn. Many of our readers commented on the strong, delightfully-named characters, noting that the mountain itself appears as a character, as does the ever-present wind. Wolf's dysfunctional childhood got a little better when he moved to Palm Springs and met Byrd. Kindred spirits, Byrd helped Wolf to connect with his Cree heritage, to learn about plants and wildlife, and introduced him to hiking. Taking the creaking cable-car up the mountain on the morning of his 18th birthday, Wolf is determined to end his life. Fate intervenes in the form of three women who need Wolf's help. The page-turning story had many of our readers rushing through to learn the conclusion, and one repeat-reader even enjoyed it more the second time than the first. Lansens did a fantastic job of showing us how we all need to be needed, or have a purpose in life. Thank you to everyone who came along to share their views or listen to the discussion. Our next meeting will take place on October 17 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Shoal Centre in Sidney. We will be discussing Born A Crime by Trevor Noah. Visit www.seasidemagazine.ca/ book-club for more information and to sign up!

Renovated Library for Sidney/North Saanich Exciting renovations are coming to the Sidney/North Saanich branch of Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL). Once complete, the current branch will be transformed into a state-ofthe-art facility that will cater to the evolving library needs on the Saanich Peninsula. “The renovated Sidney/North Saanich library will fast become a treasured community resource for families, students, seniors, newcomers, and everyone in between,” says VIRL’s Executive Director, Rosemary Bonanno. “We may be renovating the existing space, but it will feel like a brand-new library for everyone who walks through the doors. This is an exciting time to be a library user south of the Malahat.” Once complete, the building’s infrastructure will have updated electrical, lighting, HVAC, windows, and more. The library’s interior will also be refreshed, made more accessible, and modernized. Upgrades include: • Remodeled youth and adult sections • Fireplace lounge area • Additional computers and a new laptop bar • Additional study and lounge seating • New flooring, lighting, and paint • New furniture and shelving • Improved layout to accommodate wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers • Enclosed book-drop • Assistive computer station • Accessible customer service desk • New air conditioning system

The project’s budget of $2 million includes all aspects of the renovation. The Town of Sidney will finance the cost of accessible washrooms and other upgrades to the building’s common area. VIRL is currently accepting bids for a contractor, with construction anticipated to start in September. The projected completion timeline is slated for June 2019. During the renovation, a temporary library at Unit 1A – 2353 Bevan Avenue (Bevan Square) will offer holds pick up, public computers, WiFi and a small collection. Sidney/North Saanich cardholders will also have access to VIRL’s entire floating collection and digital resources for the duration of the renovation.

KEEP YOUR BRAIN HEALTHY The Alzheimer's Association recommends doing puzzles like Sudoku to strengthen brain cells and the connections between them. Each Sudoku has a unique solution that can be reached logically without guessing. Enter digits from 1 to 9 into the blank spaces. Every row must contain one of each digit. So must every column, as must every 3x3 square. *Sudoku Solutions may be found on page 93. OCTOBER 2018 | SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA 91

L AST WO R D It’s the start of another long awards season! The Emmys have already taken place, and we can expect red-carpet reports and tearful acceptance speeches all the way until the Oscars in February. We don’t like to be left out here on the Saanich Peninsula – October sees our own kind of awards season. At Seaside we like to get the readers involved, asking for your nominations for our Professionals Awards (p. 12). With winners in five categories it’s a chance for readers to tell us who is really excelling in their field. We had a great response this year, and it was exciting sifting through the replies, reading examples of superb customer service, innovation and excellence. Clearly we have a thriving business community here, and I wonder how much that has to do with people following a passion. When Lara asked “Live to work, or work to live?” in her Word on the Street column (p. 20), the majority of

You’re in good company. Each day 124,000 Victorians read the Times Colonist. More than 214,000 of us read one or more editions of the newspaper each week.

the replies were that people didn’t feel they had to choose either. When you find a career that you love, the elusive work/life balance seems more manageable. Not everyone has the opportunity for fulfilling work, but it surely follows that if you’re happy in your role that shows through in all your business dealings. Following a passion to start your own business takes a lot of courage, but hopefully leads to empowerment, fulfilment and happier work days! Congratulations to everyone nominated for a Professionals award, and especially those who won this year. We’ll see winners at the Sidney Fine Art Show too. I was astonished to read about the adjudication process (p. 11) and learn that there are over 1,000 pieces of art submitted to the show, with each one scored by three judges. What a wealth of creative talent there is in our local area. It takes courage to put yourself out there in a creative field (as I learned this month in my Day Out – p. 46) and I’m always grateful that so many people are willing to do it. You’ll certainly find me at the Art Show enjoying the fruits of many others’ creative labours. Congratulations to everyone who submitted a piece to the show, and the winners of each category. Awards season coincides with the start of holiday season … Happy Thanksgiving to you all. You know at Seaside we’re most thankful for our supportive readers and advertisers; we’d give you all an award if we could!
