Kathryn Amisson's breathtaking acrylics of West Coast and prairie scenes caught my eye several years ago. When we talked, I was equally impressed by her courage in quitting a secure government job to become a full-time artist 40 years ago. She's an inspiration to follow one's dreams.
"The Girl with the Violin" was a concept which I had been thinking about for a while. I love creating conceptual work and digitally enhancing my photography. The goal of every session is to create beautiful art which is distinctly unique to each particular client or project.
In September while headed to Prince Rupert, I toured the bridge on the Northern Expedition ferry. The crew was so hospitable‒and what a view! In my office design story you will see how important a "view" really is. And if you decide to visit Haida Gwaii, remember your rain hat!

Nobody said that being a parent is easy, but this month I've had to face one of my toughest challenges yet as a mother. And that experience, that could have left me broken, has instead opened up a whole new, wonderful aspect to my relationship with my children. I suppose that I am a "seize the day", "if life gives you lemons" type of person. Often entrepreneurs are. But as a mom I'm also vulnerable. We devote so much love and hard work to our children; they take so much energy, and demand many sacrifices. Sometimes taking care of all that big stuff can mean we lose sight of the little things. I've been learning the value of a text message, an unexpected phone call, deep and honest conversations, and what it means to love with no strings attached. When you run your own business it is natural that work bleeds into your life, and

your personal life into work. Some people are more rigid keeping those boundaries up, but I think there can be a great synchronicity between the two. I take lessons I learn from my (sometimes complicated) life and put them to work in my business. So much of life can be wasted on worry, regret, pain and heartache. Of course, some of this is inevitable and necessary for us to learn and grow and be a better person. At the end of the day, what matters most are the people in our lives. And the reason we celebrate Small Business month each October? Well, I think everyone who takes the spark of an idea and turns it into business deserves celebrating. And those stories can be inspiring for our whole community. Not everyone will want to run their own business, but we certainly benefit from living somewhere that so many people do. Let's seize the day and make more lemonade!

How to Create an Art Show: The Sidney Fine Art Show Returns Excellent art is abundant here in our part of the world. No surprise there. Artists love to live here. Create here. Maybe it's the air; maybe it's the light; maybe it's just who we are. But sometimes artists need someone else to provide a venue for their work to be seen. That's where the Sidney Fine Art Show offers a great opportunity for artists to show their work to the public. We welcome everyone from the reticent first-timer to the established professional. It's a big job to organize an art show. It takes dedicated people, a huge amount of time and, inevitably, a healthy budget. The ArtSea Community Arts Council's mandate is to support local artists and the Sidney Fine Art Show is their biggest event of the year. It is organized and managed entirely by volunteers. The most difficult challenge is how to select the art for the show. This year we received the highest number of entries since the show began in 2003 – 480 artists with nearly 1,150 pieces. The Show organizers invite three professional jurors to adjudicate the art. They are confirmed at least a year in advance and selected based on renown, accreditation, curatorial experience and previous jurying credits. And they have only one full day to view and score every piece of art. This year the jurors are Cindy Gibson, ceramicist, Tristram Lansdowne, painter, and Heather Wheeler, owner of The Avenue Gallery. Adjudication takes place in early September, about a month before the Show, and requires over 100 volunteers to make it happen. All the artwork is identified only by number, not by artist's name. The jurors arrive when all the artwork has been physically checked in. (No digital submissions are
taken). It can be overwhelming to see so much art assembled in one place. Each juror independently views and adjudicates the art as a volunteer scribe notes the scores. Scoring is scaled from one to five, with five the highest score for excellence. Jurors do not consult with each other or compare notes during this process. It's a demanding task but, by the end of the day, every piece will have received a score from all three jurors. Scores for each piece are compiled for a composite total. The highest total possible is 15, receiving a top score of five from each of the three jurors. The highest scoring artwork is then assembled for the jurors to consult together to select the winning pieces in each of the prize categories. The following day, all the art is returned to the artists. And a few days after that, artists are notified if their work has been successfully chosen to appear in the Show. B.C. Seniors More Active in the Workplace by Sherrin Griffin
I used to joke with my friends that

"we'll be working 'til we drop." These days, it's hard enough to make ends meet, let alone put enough funds aside to
last through our retirement years. I realize now that it's no laughing matter. This has become the new normal these days, with many seniors working past age 65 and still very active in the workplace, including my own 81-year-old mother who comes into our office once every two weeks to help out. As I go through my day, I encounter many seniors in various places of business – at Tim Hortons where I get my morning coffee, in retail stores at the mall where I shop, at the local gas station where I fill up, and at the supermarket where I get my groceries. At first, I felt sorry for the seniors that I saw working, and thought how sad that they can't just enjoy their retirement with the free time and opportunities that come with it. But, the reality is that B.C. has the highest rate of seniors living in poverty across the country and that number has more than doubled since 2000. Quite simply, working helps seniors make ends meet. Many seniors just can't afford to retire, or end up coming out of retirement forced by the high cost of living these days, especially in our province. With no other pension other than the meager CPP (Canadian Pension Plan), and possibly OAS (Old Age Security) / GIS (Guaranteed Income Supplement) IF they pass the rigourous qualifications, a large group of seniors are not able to cover their basic needs, let alone any health care expenses due to illness or disability, or any unforeseen large bill that comes up. I can't even imagine how seniors fared before B.C. eliminated mandatory retirement in 2008. Now, government programs such as The Older Workers 55+ Program provided by Work BC provide skills training and employment supports that help seniors achieve sustainable employment. Support can include counselling, mentoring, transportation, disability supports, work experience, wage subsidies and equipment.
As I approach the antiquated "Freedom 55" myself, I realize that there are many reasons, other than purely financial, for seniors to hold down jobs in the workplace. • Continuing to work even part time can help ease seniors' transition into retirement, allowing them to adjust gradually to this new stage of their lives. • It establishes daily routine. We all function better with consistent routine in our lives, and breaking the work routine entirely can be overwhelming for seniors. Many find themselves lonely, depressed and at odds with what to do with their time. • It gives seniors a sense of purpose and accomplishment. They feel needed and validated. Staying in the workforce can help seniors be more active and involved in their communities. • It can improve overall health and wellness, keeping seniors' bodies moving and their minds sharper. • It improves mental and social stimulation. Interaction with colleagues, performing daily tasks, problem solving and engaging with the visitors/ clientele that come into the workplace offer invaluable benefits for seniors. Many employers as well are realizing the benefits of hiring older workers who have decades of skills and experience to share, have a strong work ethic and sense of pride in what they do. So will I be joining the ranks of the working seniors when I hit retirement? You bet I will! As a chronic workaholic, I can't even imagine slowing down, let alone not working at all. Working keeps us young, and is a tonic for the mind, body and spirit!

In 2004, when Dr. Ambrose Marsh and I realized physician retirements were going to challenge this community, neither of us could have predicted the long and winding journey to find a solution. But passion and perseverance, along with support from the great Saanich Peninsula Hospital and Healthcare Foundation Board, has made all the difference for the community. This award helped get the message out for a transformative campaign – to raise funds to support Shoreline Medical in its efforts to recruit physicians. We are so close (only $120,000 away) from our goal of $2 million! It has proved what I have long believed: communities have all (or most) of the tools to help themselves. I have loved being the cheerleader for this project. Winner: Branding. Sidney BIA - answer given by Executive Director Morgan Shaw. The Sidney BIA was so pleased to receive the branding recognition from Seaside Magazine last year because branding has been an essential ingredient of the BIA's success. It not only says who we are: it serves to remind potential shoppers, clients, customers and event attendees what they can expect when they visit Sidney, a small, friendly, service-centered seaside town. A core part of financial life planning is to start early and try to balance your personal and business objectives, both current and future, all at the same time. The first and most important step in the personal financial life planning process is setting your short and longterm financial and life goals. Striking the right balance between your business and personal goals is a key to achieving them. Prioritizing one over the other may hurt your own long-term financial success. Every small business idea requires capital to start. Sometimes, success depends on the entrepreneur’s ability to secure financing. Often, the funding comes from personal savings or the sale of property. Other times, the owner needs to look for external funding within their social circle or approach a financial institution. Even the best idea can fail if it doesn’t generate a profit. Company revenue should be higher than expenses. Many ventures fail because they cannot generate enough revenue to cover all costs. Small businesses need cash to maintain healthy growth. The capacity to produce cash from its operations will determine the company’s ability to pay its employees, creditors, and vendors. Building a disciplined system of managing receivables and payables, and maintaining a cash buffer for emergencies, are key. Filing and paying taxes is a long and painful process. Current provincial and federal tax law is very complex. To avoid missed opportunities and last-minute mistakes, you must prepare for the filing process in advance. Start early. Keep a clear record of all your expenses. Track all tax filing dates. Remember to pay all federal, provincial and municipal taxes, source deductions, and fees. Most definitely work with a professional accountant. Many small business owners will tell you that they have so many balls in the air that actual business and financial planning is a low priority. One of the reasons for this is that it is not a major focus for them. Planning is paramount: if you cannot find a way of personally getting it done, turn to a financial planner and other advisors. What's Behind the Doors at Eaglehurst?

What do a hair salon, spin studio,
dog groomer and Airbnb have in common? They are all businesses you'll find behind the doors of an ordinary residential street. Except, it doesn't seem that ordinary. Paying a visit to Robin and Liz Richardson – one of the first couples to move into the new development of Eaglehurst – was enlightening. Late afternoon and the street had kids out riding bikes, and neighbours chatting in their driveways. The development (which was controversial and a long time in the planning) appealed to the couple, who were ready to downsize from a home in Dean Park. They've enjoyed introducing themselves to new neighbours as the other houses were filled, and witnessing a community building around them. Of concern for any new build on the Peninsula is who it's serving. Will retirees from other parts of Canada buy homes that could otherwise house local families? Where can our workforce afford to live? An informal survey of the residents has discovered a wide range of occupations, with workers greatly outnumbering the retired. Only a small number had moved from out of province, and there are already 44 children living in the community. Another surprise from the survey was the number of home-based businesses. Liz herself works as a hairstylist. Having a suitable salon space in her new home was one of the requirements before moving there. It's proved to be a great success in many ways, for the couple personally who love the friendly neighbourhood, and for Liz's work. I met with several of the other entrepreneurs who are making Eaglehurst not just home, but work too. Raina and Shaye Draper have just opened a boutique spin studio called Garage Cycle. They had originally chosen Eaglehurst because it was a "perfect fit" for their family, meeting the criteria of being
close to the city, but still surrounded by green space. They didn't plan to start a home-based business but, Raina says "a number of our neighbours had started small businesses from their homes which provided the inspiration and support." They found the process to apply for a Business License was straightforward and the couple is clearly impressed with the level of support they've received from the community. Further down the road there is an art studio, and a home that is soon to open a dog grooming service. I also met with Mel Nowak who tells me that part of her plan when looking for a home was to find somewhere with garage space that could be converted into a gym. "I had this vision of a garage gym because I wanted to show that fitness doesn't have to be fancy to be effective." She has a simple setup with barbells, free weights, benches and a rack. Soon after moving in, Empowerment Fitness was born. Mel thinks that part of her success has been the location: "I think the development of Eaglehurst has helped grow my business; I don't know that I would necessarily be able to have something like this if we lived in downtown Victoria." Of course not everyone wants to run a business from their home, but it is exciting to know that home-spun creativity and entrepreneurship can be accomodated and rewarded in our community. When I ask Mel whether it's something she would recommend to others her answer is enthusiastic: "Go for it! It's easy to talk yourself out of things that make you uncomfortable, but very satisfying watching your small idea turn into a reality." Workforce housing, affordable housing, high density developments: these have been hot topics on the Saanich Peninsula for many years. my first thought whenever I gaze at a Robert Bateman painting. The raw power of a bald eagle in flight or the cool aplomb of regal swans are so impeccably portrayed, the creatures seem brushed by a heavenly hand. The results are elegant noble creatures of excruciating beauty. Robert's paintings seem inspired by a sense of awe at the glory of the natural world, combined with an impassioned reverence for it. Though I would never assume to know what drives the gifted artist, I caught a fleeting glimpse of the person behind the masterful strokes of colour. His art seems to be rooted in a deep empathy for the wild animals and natural world he

recreates – and his zeal to understand them. Our very own Salt Spring treasure, acclaimed artist Robert McLellan Bateman is a legend in his own time. His canvases beautify the walls of homes and museums around the world. Born in Toronto, he has been an avid naturalist and artist since childhood. His early imagination was aroused by the Group of Seven. After exploring diverse artistic styles, he adopted "realism" in his 30s. The artist's singular finesse with a paintbrush earned him critical acclaim starting in the '70s and continues to this day. His art draws crowds at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. and the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Just a smattering of Robert's larger-than-life achievements include over a million copies sold of books about his art and life; multiple awards and 14 honorary doctorates; and being named an Officer of the Order of Canada and a Member of the Order of British Columbia. Many of his early works thrill audiences at The Robert Bateman Centre in Victoria, B.C. Robert Bateman's enthusiasm for all things wild and natural is poignantly expressed by the artist: "I can't conceive of anything being more varied, rich and handsome than planet earth; its crowning beauty is the natural world." This passion underlies his commitment to ecology and the preservation of nature. The last part of the quote shows Robert's deeply empathic approach to his craft. By immersing himself within the organic world that inspires his creations, he takes an insider's view of its heart and essence: "I want to soak it up, to understand it ... then put it together and express it in my painting.
This is the way I want to dedicate my life." "I want it to look as if what I do never happened" is Robert's cryptic and fascinating window into the process behind his art. "I want the final picture to look like it just occurred now. I don't want it to look staged or contrived." Perhaps the artist's skilled and precise brush-strokes transcend the mere canvas, giving his wild subjects an immediate realness to the viewer. It's almost as if Robert wants people to step into his painted scenes and feel them on a visceral level. Staring into the impossibly realistic face of Robert Bateman's bear in his mesmerizing "Grizzly Head Study," I swear that I can hear the animal panting. While talking with the artist, I learn why: "Whenever I paint a sentient being, I try to put myself into their skin, and experience what they are feeling. I did that with the grizzly bear." By becoming the grizzly, Robert gives us eyes into the soul of that magnificent beast with every brush-stroke. We see and feel its strength, its power, and perhaps its vulnerabilities as it morphs into a living, breathing creature. Robert's ability to transport us into the world of his creations reveals the genius of this innovative artist. The candid painter quickly corrects the popular misconception that he focuses on drawing every hair and feather of his beloved wild subjects. In conveying the essence and spirit of the grizzly, he is much more interested in its whole form than its parts. "I am not after every hair. If anything, I am after the air between the hairs, the feeling of the clumps of hair, and the muscles and bones beneath the hair." Maybe the great power and beauty of the massive animal in Robert's painting comes from the intense empathy and feeling directing those brush strokes. The extraordinary talents of Robert Bateman have enriched the lives of people across the globe by injecting beauty, joy and wonder into their everyday existence. His books of art and his public speaking have educated all ages on the marvels of wildlife and their habitat and the need to hold them dear. Entertaining Expressions Today, we turn our attention to the world of theatre. To help us is a special guest, the talented Grace La Stage. Thank you my darlings. I always love to be in the limelight. By the way, isn't that a fascinating little phrase? It goes back to the late 1800s, definitely before my time! While some of you might be thinking citrus fruit or the colour green, it actually relates to a scientific discovery by Sir Goldsworthy Gurney. One day he burned calcium oxide, otherwise known as quicklime; it produced an intense white light. Prior to the advent of electricity, the burning of quicklime was a way to illuminate actors on stage. Now, let's carry on my darlings and shine a light, at least, a metaphoric one, on a few more phrases. Before going on stage, actors love to hear break a leg! No, this isn't someone wishing us misfortune: the phrase is based in old theatrical superstitions. Fellow performers would say the opposite of good luck so as to ward off evil spirits and ensure a good outcome. Others believe it originates with the act of "breaking," or bending one's knees when taking a bow. Speaking of bows, I recently performed in a comedy to rave reviews although one of my fellow actors really chewed the scenery. No, there was no food involved my darlings. It simply means that he was overacting. That expression traces back to the late 1800s, when comic actors would involve the very furniture and props around them as part of their act and figuratively devour or "chew" the scenery. Now it's one thing to overact, but quite another when that actor tried to upstage me. Oh my dears, are you confused? You need to understand this: downstage is toward and upstage away from the audience. It's based on the early days of theatre when stages were built with a slope down to the audience. If an actor was away from the audience, or upstage, they were not only elevated but easier to see. As if this wasn't bad enough, it forced the other actors to turn their backs to talk to that actor, something this performer is loath to do. Before someone gives me the hook, I'll close! It's a phrase from the days of variety entertainment called vaudeville. If you were incompetent enough to receive jeers from the audience, a manager would unceremoniously drag you off the stage by the use of a long hook. Thank you for being a lovely audience. on scaffolding. A hod is a three-sided box attached to an ash pole. It held 12 six-pound bricks, so I would have to hoist this 82-pound weight onto my shoulder, support it with one hand as I ran up the ladder, unload, then repeat. Tricky even on a warm summer's day, and not much fun in the rain or on a frosty morning! I ran out of money during a motoring trip round Europe, and found a cleaning job in a French hotel. Armed with a ladder, some rags and a bucket of water and vinegar, my first task was to wash every window in the hotel, inside and out, by hand. The windows were filthy, but I took great pride in restoring them to a pristine sparkle using the old trick of rubbing them with a newspaper after washing. For some reason, paper towels leave streaks, but newspaper works like magic. My next job was to clean the inside of the stainless steel vents above the cook stove in the restaurant. The caked-on grease was over an inch thick, and most of it fell on me as I scraped it off. I felt like one of those chimney sweep boys used in London after the Great Fire of 1666. But by far the worst job I ever had was the one week I spent as a milkman. Milk in those days came in one-pint glass bottles, with either a silver top (regular) or gold top (Jersey cream). It was delivered right to your doorstep every day at around 5 a.m. Comedian Benny Hill portrayed this role in a romantic light, suggesting that scantily clad housewives would beckon the milkman inside for a quick cup of tea, or something equally warming … not my experience! My milk round started at 4 a.m., and I had three hours to deliver around 100 crates of milk to 800 households. It was pitch dark and raining heavily. Things quickly went sideways. I remember trudging up four flights of stairs in a block of flats with a broken lift, only to find a note outside room 405 requesting "One extra pint please." Reversing out, I failed to see a low brick wall, which I promptly demolished, and three crates of milk fell from the back of the truck and shattered on the ground. It took me nearly an hour to pick up the shards of glass in the darkness, and attempt to stand the wall back up. When I returned to the depot, the manager gave me some excellent career counselling by advising me that I was "not cut out to be a milkman." His words echo in my ear every April, and I pick up my next tax return with a huge smile on my face.

What Role Do the Arts Play in Your Life? according to Jackson Pollock. And similarly, Thomas Merton said: "Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time." These very themes were echoed by high school performing arts students I spoke with back in September. The concepts of selfexpression and self-discovery were prominent in what they shared, as was the notion of pushing oneself beyond the bounds of comfort. The kids I spoke with were all quick to express the way in which performing arts in particular have changed them and helped them grow as unique individuals. Though I had hoped to speak with artists of all kinds that day, the sentiments expressed by these students about their own crafts – namely acting and singing – in my mind are applicable across all genres of artistic creativity. Mylana had this to say: "Singing is my passion. The story that a song can tell is really interesting and unique." When she's on stage performing, she says she feels "honestly, on top of the world. It's the greatest feeling, being on stage with all the lights, making other people smile." Her favourite characters to play are those that are least like her: "It's fun to be somebody else, even if it's just for five minutes." I spoke with Hanne. For her, the arts are "stress-relieving. Just going into that room is a weight off my shoulders because I can get away from everything else I'm doing at school: from homework, from math … just getting into my own world." "[Musical theatre] has really brought me out of my shell. I remember last semester at the beginning, it was my first class and I was shy and I wouldn't participate, and was just kind of 'there.' In this class I am participating, I am comfortable, I am willing to talk. It's social for me. They are all musical theatre kids, we all know each other and have
common interests," said Rowan. Kylie is a successful and awarded dancer. When she performs she feels confident and sees herself exceeding her own expectations, reaching new levels and consistently moving up in the rankings. "Every dancer is different, and I've learned so much from watching others." She stresses the connection you have with others through dance; the trust and the team effort. "Dancing together we grow together." I ask about her solo endeavours. "Dancing as a soloist was terrifying at first, but eventually I came to see it as my time to shine, to be unique. It's for you. If I didn't have dance I would be different than I am today." It strikes me how the same reflections continue to come up for students. Emily has been taking drama for two years. "When I first joined drama I was kind of nervous, thinking 'I don't know if I'm going to like this,' knowing it was out of my comfort zone. By the middle of the year I had met a lot of new people and we were doing so many fun and cool projects. By the end of the year I had learned so many new things, but not only with acting ‌ just, speaking up. It brought me out of my shell. If at the beginning of the year I could have seen myself at the end of the year, I never would have believed it was the same person." I asked Emily to comment on the opportunity to take drama classes at school. "Take art, take drama, take something that will take you out of your comfort zone, because it's good experience for life." The last students I interview are accomplished actors and singers from the drama and music programs. "The performing arts make you more prepared for life situations because you have to be prepared for anything. You never know what's going to be thrown at you. You have to be able to mould and adapt. There's a certain respect and responsibility, and it makes you accountable. And there's room for doing it your own way. For example, in chemistry we're all doing the same thing and there's no room for perception. Perception is everything." This is wisdom from Abby. Access to the arts is extremely important, according to Isabella. "You build a bond and find a family because you go in and let loose. You don't have to be yourself for a moment because you're stepping into someone else's shoes." Abby agrees. " You can leave it all at the door and just go for it."

ArtSea 2019 Fall Studio Tour
“IT’S FUN!”
One of Vancouver Island's longest-running studio tours will take place October 26 and 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on the Saanich Peninsula. This year's self-guided tour has attracted 29 talented artists from Brentwood Bay, North Saanich and Sidney and marks a historic 25th anniversary. "We're fortunate to have the fall Studio Tour follow on the heels of the Sidney Fine Art Show," says Wendy Picken, one of the tour organizers and an artist herself. "If someone sees art work they like at the Sidney Show, that artist may also be part of the studio tour which gives people a chance to see more of their work in a studio setting." With many new artists involved as well as long-time favourites, art lovers will be able to enjoy a wide variety of genres through paintings, metal and fabric sculptures, pottery, woodcuts, wearable art, jewelry and more. The tour also gives visitors a chance to explore the beauty of the Saanich Peninsula. The majority of artists on the tour will display and demonstrate their art in their home studios while a few will group their work in one setting, such as Russell Nursery near Deep Cove. A good starting point is the ArtSea Gallery in Tulista Park, Sidney where four artists will be demonstrating their art form. A colourful brochure with self-guiding map is available at numerous locations around the Saanich Peninsula and in Victoria. A complete list of places carrying the brochure is available at www.artsea.ca under "Events – Studio Tour." The brochure contains write-ups about the artists and their type of artwork which makes it easy to decide on a route. Wendy suggests: "Give yourself plenty of time – the full two days – to be able to browse and talk to the artists about their techniques and creative inspiration." According to the tour organizers, one of the best outcomes from the tour is that artists get feedback from the visitors which can further spark their creativity. During the studio tour, visitors have the opportunity to explore the Peninsula and enjoy its rural scenery encompassing wineries, pumpkin fields, forested parks, marinas, scenic Mount Baker (on a clear day), market gardens, country stores and garden nurseries. The ArtSea Gallery at Tulista Park is right beside the waterfront pathway that takes walkers into downtown Sidney where they can enjoy its small-town ambiance. Wendy is proud of the fact that the studio tour has been bringing the community together for 25 years, making it "a good way for new residents to be introduced to the Peninsula art community."

According to recent studies, over a third
of adults – and more than half of millennials – have what is called a "Side Hustle." Sometimes out of necessity, sometimes out of passion, these entrepreneurs are taking the reins into their own hands and becoming small business owners. Erin Young, of Young & Barrel Designs, is a schoolteacher by day – but she also creates custom farmhouse-style signs. "I've always had a passion for home décor," she says, describing how her interest was piqued about five years ago. She researched how the wooden signs were made, and used her husband's woodworking tools to help her through the initial trial-and-error. "Soon I had friends and coworkers requesting various sign styles and it just kind of turned into a side business!" She says that life gets very busy, and there are a lot of late nights filling orders and multi-tasking at home with the family. "I just love my side gig, so most often it doesn't feel like a chore or burden. It's that creative outlet that fills my bucket!" Patricia Pearson and Ashley Stelck are the brains behind Hansell & Halkett, a home décor business focusing on antiques, vintage farmhouse and French country furniture, and specialty garden items. Patricia's father was a collector of everything, she says, noting

that he could never pass up an estate sale. "He had a heart for pieces that no one else wanted and would spend hours restoring them." So, despite being a self-described minimalist, Patricia couldn't resist the draw to "save" old pieces by refinishing or repurposing them. Ashley's mom, on the other hand, owned and operated a wellknown antique shop. With Ashley's keen eye for timeless quality pieces, and Patricia's desire to refurbish old treasures, it was a match made in heaven. "It's in our blood!" They started the business four years ago, and offer everything from bathroom vanities to chipped shelves, from vases and art to rusty gas cans and wheelbarrows for the garden. While it can be difficult to manage along with their busy day jobs – Patricia is a sales advisor at Level Ground and a North Saanich municipal councillor, and Ashley is the manager of Georgia Café at Sidney Pier Hotel – you can still find them at vintage markets and pop-up shops around the Island. The most challenging part of any side gig is how to balance small business ownership with other work and commitments, as any of these entrepreneurs will tell you. "I find that my job can be pretty exhausting," says Jen Wurban, a high school art and special education teacher. "[But] it also helps that I get to teach teenagers art – it gets me excited and inspired to go home and paint, when I see them creating amazing things and getting excited about a project." Jen sells her art at JenWurbanArt on Etsy, and at markets throughout the year. She also takes commissions, and has been working on a few larger pieces for collaborative shows like the Potluck Art Show at Northern Quarter (October 2 to November 2). It all started several years ago, when she did a small market with friends. "We shared a table and it was a really fun experience. After that, and the positive feedback I got, I decided to give it a shot and started making mini paintings, illustrations, prints and cards for larger markets." She has created art since she was little, and even studied Art Education and Art History at university. It also turns out that having a side gig can actually be the thing that relaxes you – Jen says that painting can be excellent stress relief. "I'll usually come home, put on a podcast and paint to help me relax and de-stress." Madeline Benson agrees – she says you often feel burnt out, but there are some days when it doesn't feel like work at all. "I just love it so much!" she says of her side business, BabyCakes. A travel agent by day, Madeline always wondered about having a cake business. "It was one of those things that has always lived in the back of my head as a "maybe one day" kind of dream – I honestly wasn't sure I would ever see it become a reality." She baked her first cheesecake at eight years old, using a family favourite recipe from her mother. But it wasn't until a few years ago, when asked to bake a special cake for her sister's wedding, that the spark was reignited. "It finally clicked for me – that's what I wanted to be doing." She says it's a lot of work, but the happiness and fulfillment of pursuing her passion is worth it – a sentiment shared by all these hard-working entrepreneurs.

Still Looking Forward

As we sat over coffee in the quaint
Switchboard CafĂŠ on Salt Spring Island, Elsy Perks spoke of the time when that coffee bar used to be the telephone switchboard she operated almost seven decades before. This modest 96 year old mused about her times growing up on Salt Spring. Our conversation revealed the characteristics and attitudes that have led to her living a long life. Elsy grew up on a farm which provided a livelihood to her family and a rich foundation for a girl's future. Within this fertile setting, young Elsy discovered her innate love of nature. She nurtured the chicks, milked the cows and built gardens. To this day, she recalls her exhilaration seeing flowers blossom from the bulbs she planted in the fall. She loves springtime when all of nature comes to life including "the chorus of frogs in the fields. Such lovely, gentle music." Those first 18 blissful years ended abruptly with the declaration of World War II. The local boys went to war and even girlfriends enlisted. Elsy's loyalty to her parents and the working farm kept her from joining the war effort, but left her disappointed and rather lost. Eventually, she married and operated a florist business with her husband. As a florist, Elsy was self-taught. She recalled being asked to make a blanket of flowers for a casket. Without a clue where to begin, it was trial and error, asking associates for advice. After much stress, the blanket was a success! Farm life taught Elsy to be self-sufficient, practical and independent, qualities that served her well during challenging times. Faced with being a single parent of young boys, she used her skills and smarts to carry on. "When I was on my own, without much money, I had to fend for myself, to think about what I was going to do. I just took the bull by the horns and carried on as best I could to keep things together for the boys." Being resourceful and creative has helped. To generate income over the years, Elsy has made feather "fascinators" for a hat shop, worked in a bank, rented part of her house, taken in ESL students and established a garden boutique to showcase and sell her art and crafts, including her paintings. "I always feel I can make do with what I have." I first met Elsy when she was ready to leave one project and take on a new one. She was selling her home of 15 years, a home she established on bare land when she was 72. She had purchased an oceanview lot, had a well drilled, a foundation built and a house barged in from Victoria. Over the years, she created an enchanting
flower garden and welcomed garden tours. She also had an addition built onto the house and operated a Bed & Breakfast. At 87, Elsy was ready for another change, "a new project," she said, so she sold her home and moved to a smaller one. I asked Elsy what she's learned along her journey. She told me that there are going to be potholes along the way but that's life. She said one must be prepared for them and "really appreciate what one has." She thinks of her two wonderful boys, who are doing well. "I'm very lucky to have them." Elsy is a forward thinker. When contemplating her future, she clearly doesn't want to sit back in a chair waiting for life to end. In fact, she feels that's probably why she has such a hard time with old age. "I just don't want to give up!" In fact, with eagerness, she anticipates another chapter of her life encompassing her family, her art and her garden, albeit in a gentler way. "Ah, to think one still has a future; that's exhilarating!"

What an amazing summer. It
has flown by like a whirlwind! I am so thankful for where I live and the amazing people that cross my path every day. For the first time I registered with WWOOF – World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms and we have had three amazing people throughout the summer from Germany and Argentina. Two of them stayed for five weeks each. They loved mingling with the bed and breakfast people, meeting some of the campers, and working with the staff in the fields or in the kitchen. They helped with so many of the daily farm chores and are missed every day. One morning there were people, including the "woofer," from five different countries! What an experience. I could take a break. Well, that's not so easy when all the prime fruits and vegetables need processing. What a bounty we have access to! September saw the kitchen process 500 pounds of peaches and 500 pounds of pears. Then there was another crop of rhubarb ready, ripe apples, and lemon verbena and roses to pick, to name just a few of the projects we undertook. A big thank you goes to the woofers, staff and all the people that attended and made these fun summer events special. With the bounty of the Okanagan pears I created the following vegan pear crisp for your enjoyment. Preheat oven to 350° 4 cups pears (about 6) 20 grams fresh lemon verbena (optional but adds a lovely lemon flavour) 5 grams fresh ginger lemon juice (to stop the pears from browning) ¼ cup pear juice 1 cup gluten free oats ¼ cup walnuts 2 tbsp unscented organic coconut oil 1 tbsp brown sugar Spray an 8" x 8" glass baking dish with a non-stick spray. Core the pears and cut into one-inch pieces and place in baking dish. Add a dash of lemon juice to the pears to stop them from browning. Place the lemon verbena, pear juice and fresh ginger in a blender and puree. This is green and rather scary looking but is delightful and totally natural. The colour changes while cooking. Place this mixture on top of the pears and stir together. Assemble the topping. Place the coconut oil, oats, walnuts and brown sugar in a bowl and mix together. Spread evenly on top of the pears. Place in oven and bake for one hour until brown. Serve with homemade pear sorbet (recipe online at www. snowdonhouse.ca) or vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
Happy One Year Anniversary I wanted to reach out to the community and say THANK YOU, from the bottom of my heart. This past year has been more than I could have ever imagined. What a successful year it has been and all thanks to the continued support from such a loving community. Sidney is such a unique little town that has grown ten-fold since I was a child; just a little piece of heaven. Above all else, even with the large growth in population, Sidney has remained the charming, friendly and truly special community I have always known it to be. I am so honored to have such an amazing support system from all of my clients. So many of you have become so much more to me. The Fine Art of Buying a Good Suit by David Bremner d.g.bremner & co.
Thinking back to the day I
bought my first suit, I realize it was 50 years ago! My Dad had worn a suit to work for as long as I could remember, so buying a suit was kind of a big deal for me. Although I was already working in the clothing business, Dad was instrumental in teaching me how to appreciate the details. I doubt I appreciated it then as much as I do now … but that's another story for another day. This morning, I was talking to a customer in our downtown store about his son, and how he was teaching him exactly the same thing. So: an about face, first draft of my article out the window, completely new direction taken … off to a quiet table in the Bard & Banker to compose. I could talk about how suits are made, or about fabric and how both of these affect the price, I think. These things are certainly important; however, they sometimes run into the realm of "too much information" for a suit buyer. So, I change the dialogue slightly, to: "The Fine Art of Buying a Good Suit." Honestly, it's simple. Find someone in the industry who is in your age bracket who really understands the "clothing" business and develop a relationship with that person. It's their job to understand all the intricacies of garment construction, and it's their job to find the right combination of the "Big 5" components

to meet your needs: style, fabric, fit, construction and price. New buyers will learn the differences over time as they move up the clothing ladder to better quality construction and better fabrics, the two things that influence price the most. Oh, other than the label … which opens up another can of worms, and yet another reason to develop a relationship with your preferred suit seller. There was a time, not long ago, when purchases were often "label driven." While this was initially based on the quality of the garment, in many cases it quickly became a way for the most popular brands to sell garments of lower quality and construction at higher prices than the quality or construction would normally demand, simply because owning that label implied you were "cool." Today, of course, many of those brands still exist, but have moved their lesser quality garments to their outlet stores. Same M.O:, still often more expensive than other comparable garments. Today there is more emphasis on quality and construction than there is on brand alone. As menswear buyers, we look for the best combination of quality and value for suits that "tick all the boxes" a buyer expects when making his purchase, rather than what the label says. Really, that's a good thing. I understand that it's a new world today: you can measure yourself, pick a fabric and order a suit online. At first glance, that seems to have some potential – an intriguing way to buy a suit without having to leave the house! Of course, in the interests of full disclosure, as a career menswear guy with lots of experience in made to measure and custom made suits, I can't help but think: OK, I like the pattern. But how does the fabric feel? How does the price compare with similarly constructed garments? What model do I order? What if it doesn't fit when it arrives? All good questions. The best company in that end of the industry has more or less recently opened up brick and mortar retail shops, so I think that pretty much answers the question. Having people order suits from the comfort of their couch at home sounds great, but in reality, relying on customers to measure themselves poses too many problems to be sustainable. When it comes to buying a suit, nothing compares to seeing the fabric and colour, trying something on, and having a tailor come out to make any alterations to custom fit the suit to you. Finding that individual to connect with may be a challenge, but once you find the person that you identify with, really, buying a suit becomes enjoyable, quick and easy.

This is what they have to say about that often feared visit to the dentist. In your professional opinion, why do some

people have a fear of going to the dentist? Many people have had previous negative experiences, which makes them afraid to seek treatment. They may not have had procedures explained well, so they didn't know what to expect and felt rushed through treatment. They may not have been properly frozen, and treatment proceeded despite their discomfort. Dental work takes place in our personal space, and you really need to trust that the person treating you knows what they are doing and has your best interests at heart.
What do you do in your practice to alleviate these fears? We have a wide range of options to help make your appointment more comfortable. To begin with, we proceed slowly, explain what will happen as we go along and ensure complete, profound freezing before we start any treatment. Other than daily brushing and flossing, what are some tips you would give people to keep their smiles bright and healthy? Staying away from sugary food and drink,
as bacteria in your mouth uses that as fuel to make acids that break down the enamel on your teeth. If you do have to have sweets, try not to eat or drink them over a long period of time; eat or drink, then brush or rinse your mouth with water, to reduce the exposure of your teeth to acids. Also, avoid sticky foods like caramels that are not easily removed by brushing or rinsing after consumption. On a personal level, what attracted the two of you to begin a practice in Sidney? We did our undergraduate degrees at UVic, and when Jaci started dental school at UBC a year before Loren, we spent a lot of time before and after ferry travel hanging out in Sidney. We loved the small-town feel, and the slower pace of the Peninsula in general, and felt it would be a wonderful place to settle down and raise our family. So after graduation in 2000, when the opportunity came to set up a practice in Sidney, we both jumped at it!

What’s Happening at the Mary Winspear Centre
Mamma Mia! Want to go to a party? Well, have we got a party for you! Mamma Mia!, opening October 18th at the Charlie White Theatre, is just that. A glitzy, glamourous, rollicking, joyful party! Mamma Mia! features twenty-two of Abba’s greatest hits, tied together with a story that is full of fun, pathos, passion and lots of laughs. Audiences throughout the world have shown their enthusiasm for Mamma Mia! with wild, excited applause and instant standing ovations. You can’t help but clap along and tap your feet to dynamic versions of Dancing Queen, Super Trouper, Waterloo and, of course, Mamma Mia. It’s Abba! The true test of a successful musical is when you leave the theatre humming one of the songs you’ve just heard. With Mamma Mia!, audiences are humming the songs even before the show starts. When Mamma Mia! first opened in London’s West End it was an immediate hit. It became the seventh longest running show in London and continues to delight audiences to this day. It ran for fourteen years on Broadway making it one of the top ten longest running musicals ever. There was the successful film, and its sequel, but neither can hold a candle to seeing Mamma Mia! live onstage. And now the Mary Winspear Centre, in collaboration with the Peninsula Players, is presenting Mamma Mia! live on the stage of the Charlie White Theatre.
Directed by Steve Ivings, with choreography and music direction by Lena Palermo, this production of Mamma Mia! is a true musical party from the opening bars of the overture to the closing bows. You’ll be instantly drawn into the delightful story. On a small Greek island we meet Sophie, raised by her single mom, Donna. Sophie is about to be married. Donna has never revealed who Sophie’s father is but Sophie has discovered it is one of three men. So she invites them all to her wedding! She doesn’t tell Donna, whose reaction, when she first encounters her three former beaus, is priceless. (The fact that she’s wielding a live power tool at the time makes for a scarily hilarious moment). While the story is very funny, there are moments of great tenderness too. Donna trying to hide her heartache when she realizes her little girl has grown up and will soon leave the island. We see Donna fighting to control her anger and frustration when she finally has the chance to tell off one of the Dads for leaving her those twenty years ago. And there’s the fun, goofy, good feelings when Donna’s former bandmates, Rosie and Tanya, arrive to help her handle all the craziness (or add to it) along with the island’s population of delightfully ditzy Greek characters. The story has many layers, all brilliantly backed by Abba’s wonderful songs. Mamma Mia! is a sparkling, joyful celebration. Two hours of fabulous music and a great story overflowing with fun, laughter and love. You don’t want to miss this party!
Steve Hofstetter The Mary Winspear Centre and Balfour’s Friends Foundation present stand-up comedian Steve Hofstetter for two nights of laughs November 1 & 2. Author, columnist, and comedian Steve Hofstetter is often called the hardest working man in show-business. One of the top booked acts on the college circuit, the original writer for collegehumor.com has also released six albums. Hofstetter has written humor columns for the New York Times, SportsIllustrated.com, and NHL.com. While Hofstetter’s live shows are routinely sold out, he is best known for his writing, he co-founded “Sports Jerk of the Week”, an irreverent website featured by press like USA Today’s Baseball Weekly, Sports Illustrated and CNN. And at 20, Hofstetter took a year off of school to head up web content for the New York Yankees. The Yankees won the World Series that year, which would have been wonderful if they hadn’t beaten Hofstetter’s Mets. Yes, he’s also a Mets fan. Poor kid. Show procceds will support local charity Balfour’s Friends Foundation which aims to assist people in need by receiving and maintaining funds in order to provide supplementary aid to pet owners in need to ensure proper veterinary care can be supplied to their pet.

Understanding Probiotics and How They Help Us
Our "microbiome" (aka Probiotics) is a much-guarded mystery of the human body that has only recently been paid attention to. Probiotics are live microorganisms that offer many health benefits and naturally occur in our food and environment. In the past few decades, probiotics have also been prepared in supplement form. This way we can easily recolonize our gut more effectively. These microorganisms have adapted over time to live naturally in our bodies and provide a symbiotic relationship, essential for survival. The two most common forms of probiotics (or "good bacteria") that have been identified and investigated are lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. Lactobacilli are found primarily in our upper intestine and bifidobacteria is normally located in the lower bowel. A form of yeast called saccaromyces boulardii has also been extensively studied because of its ability to stay active when people need to take antibiotics. Prebiotics are the "food" that these desirable organisms feed off of in our gut and naturally stimulate their growth and activity. It has been estimated that a healthy gut contains more bacteria than cells in our bodies by 3:1 and that we have more than 500 to 1,000 strains in and on our bodies at one time. Not all probiotics are the same and many have been specifically tested to determine their role in the human body. The following are a few important areas where probiotics have been studied in regards to the types of bacteria and how they benefitted humans in disease prevention and treatment. Colitis and GI health. It has been established that our gut flora has an important role in prevention of chronic disease by way of supporting the maintenance of gut barrier function and modulation of the immune system. In people with forms of colitis such as IBD, Crohn's and ulcerative colitis, the bacteria bifidobacterium longum 536, L. reuteri ATCC 55730, L. rhamnosus strain GG, have all shown to down-regulate the inflammatory response to benefit outcomes in therapy. Weight Loss. A study that was published in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2014 found that Lactobacillus Rhamnosus CGMCC1.3724 (LPR) supported weight loss and maintenance in obese men and women. In addition to its effect on weight and fat mass loss, the LPR bacteria reduced by about 25% circulating leptin concentrations (the hormone that makes you hungry) and reduced the levels of a different bacterium that is suspected to encourage weight gain. Mental Health. Another interesting area that microbiota research is being done is in mental health. In 2017, The Annals of General
Psychiatry provided a study on the "gut-brain" axis and showed that certain bacteria can support neurotransmitter production in the brain. One example was with with Lactobacillus Brevis NCL912 strain of probiotic that showed to increase GABA levels in the brain, a neurotransmitter responsible for helping the mind focus and remain calm, especially in stressful situations. The research on human probiotics is in its infant stages but the potential is immense. In 2012, the Human Microbiome Project published its initial results of sequencing the genome of the human microbiota, focusing particularly on the bacteria that normally inhabit the skin, mouth, nose, digestive tract, and vagina. We are finding out every day how good bacteria help us thrive and survive and will see much more information come out in the future.

Dragonfly Hobby Farm: A Landscape of Living
Many years ago living on the Saanich Peninsula required people to draw their sustenance directly from the land upon by Jo Barnes which they lived. While most of us today rely on grocery markets and at best tend to backyard gardens, there are still those in our community for whom living off the land is a way of life. This is the eighth in a Seaside series featuring local community members who all share the same passion for the land and love of what they do. Living off the land and in harmony with it involves labour.

For this local hobby farmer, it's a labour of love and respect for life. Dorrien Thompson, of Central Saanich's Dragonfly Hobby Farm, not only tends his land, homestead, produce and animals, but does so with a very apparent deep regard for life and living. "We take our farm name from the dragonfly; there are tons of them here," says Dorrien. "Every life matters whether it's a chicken, goat or dragonfly. This is important to me." Set amongst tall cedar, fir and arbutus trees, the 10-acre property is an extremely private piece of the Pacific Northwest. And while a home, greenhouse, animal pen, outbuildings and produce beds have all been built here, the wild beauty is still intact. The plant beds alongside the road that runs through the property feature an arrangement of greenery and split log pieces that tie in beautifully with the wildwood all around. Even Dorrien's favourite quiet place to reflect is a comfy old Muskoka-style chair that sits amongst the trees. For 17 years now, Dorrien and his wife Ada have enjoyed making their home here. "We moved here from Calgary. My son wanted to go to UVic," shares Dorrien. "We were so lucky to find this place." As well as growing flowers, herbs, vegetables and fruit, Dorrien raises chickens and goats. And again, they reflect how he values living creatures.
"This is Pistol," Dorrien indicates, gesturing at a bright-eyed goat near the fence. "He and these others are local rescues. You see, people buy them as pets then realize they don't want them anymore. There have been cats dumped off on our road that we've raised too." Goats feed, play and wander about in their enclosure. Several young kids suckle from their mother whose coat is smooth and shiny. Alert and active, the chickens cluck about with beautiful white feathers. It's a healthy, happy scene. The farm's greenhouse, fruit trees and numerous raised beds brings in a harvest that satisfies daily dietary needs as well as local customers. "Am I living off the land? Yes pretty much," shares Dorrien. "We grow what we like to eat. I can grab fresh herbs any time of the year. We buy little meat, and when we do, it's local." Here care of environment and sustainability are foundational from construction of buildings to farming methods like the choice to raise only organic chickens. "I have built everything from mostly recycled materials or damaged materials. The fertilizer we use is from our compost, and the manure we get from our animals," states Dorrien. And of course, it is hard work with daily challenges, but this selftaught farmer is philosophical about these tasks. "There are always problems in life," says Dorrien, "but every problem has a solution." It's a vibrant scene with a dizzying diversity of nutritional produce grown including herbs, leafy greens, numerous vegetables and a variety of fruit. "We have two plum trees, two apple, two peach, two pear and 18 fig trees," states Dorrien. "We got about 2,000 to 3,000 figs this past season. A lot of Europeans love them." And as well as cultivating all of this, Dorrien also has flowers in the mix. "We sell flowers. We grow them by the season, daffodils first, then tulips, lilies, then dahlias," he says. Life here is an intimate relationship with nature where awareness of season and timing is central to activity and lifestyle. "As soon as the apple tree blossoms, I start to plant. I listen to the trees and follow their activity," shares Dorrien. His sensitivity to natural cycles and intuitiveness are not that surprising because while he is an enthusiastic hobby farmer, Dorrien is also an artist and author. Known as "Lailo" in the art world, he creates works of abstract art, using liquid acrylic as well as other mediums. His art is on display and for sale at the Village Gallery in Sidney and also at the McTavish Academy of Art. "I've been doing art for six years now," says Dorrien. "It's my therapy. It comes from within; it's a form of self expression." He has built an onsite art shed where he explores colours and ideas that reflect his affinity for nature and life. But it's a creativity that seems to spill out all over the landscape from the splash of colours on the kitchen cabinets to the flowering garden plots in front of the home. "I like playing," shares Dorrien. "You discover new things." And maybe he's right: it's all about discovering, listening, learning. Life is about living. OCTOBER 2019 | SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA 59

On Sunday, August 25, more than 800 hundred people came out to the Second Annual Canamera Cruise car show at 2205 Keating X Road in Central Saanich. Organized by "Mr. Pontiac," John Buck, the show featured 276 classic cars from Vancouver Island, Pender Island and Vancouver. The event raised over $15,000 for BC Children's Hospital to continue its efforts to look after our kids, including John's seven-year-old grandson Ryerson.

Donor Support Brings More Doctors to the Peninsula When the 2018-19 Saanich Peninsula Hospital & Healthcare Foundation fundraising campaign was launched last October we didn't know how donors would respond to our change of focus. For the first time we were taking our fundraising goal outside the hospital and into the wider Peninsula community, looking to support the recruitment and retention of family doctors. This change of perspective required us to provide a lot of information about why we were the right people to tackle the doctor shortage crisis, and how we knew we'd be able to help. Now, at the end of the campaign, we are incredibly proud to see the results of it being put into immediate practice here in our community. Thanks to our donors the campaign is at $1,880,840.54 (less than $120,000 to go!). A wonderful offer of a donation match, thanks to the $650,000 offered by the James Family Foundation, really inspired our donors. The match was achieved in February 2019 and has had a big impact. What we heard from the community was that access to a family physician matters, and that the community was willing to place their trust in us, as well as the Shoreline Medical Society, to make changes to the way Primary Care is delivered, to improve access to doctors for everyone. What the fundraising campaign has achieved is: • Shoreline Medical Brentwood – a new clinic space renovated and opened in February • Shoreline Medical Sidney – renovations began in April and are now almost complete, greatly expanding the clinic space to accommodate new physicians and retain the walk-in clinic (now the only one in Sidney) H N s TC R N I ail WA OU ATIO r det om R c . o C FO LO R! • Four new doctors are coming to Sidney over the next four months • In addition two doctors who are planning to retire (sometime in the next three years) have joined Shoreline Sidney, ensuring that their patients will be cared for when replacements are recruited • The search continues for a third clinic site, near the hospital in Saanichton. The Foundation's mandate is to provide up-to-date facilities, innovative programs, and proactive solutions, to support the health, wellness, and sustainability of the Saanich Peninsula and the Southern Gulf Island communities. Each year we assess where the needs are greatest, and where fundraising dollars will make the most difference. For the 2019-2020 campaign we will be turning our attention back to the hospital, specifically our Long-term Care unit. We'll be hoping to raise another $2 million to make important upgrades and improvements to infrastructure and equipment, as well as bringing more therapy tools to enhance our residents' experiences. Finding Support Through Cancer
Cancer touches nearly everyone. Whether it is a spouse, family member, coworker, friend, or even you, most people will be closely affected at some point in their lives. The Canadian Cancer Society now estimates that nearly one in two individuals will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. While rates of new diagnoses are increasing, so is the five-year cancer survival rate. Since more people are living with their cancers for longer, many cancer diagnoses are now considered chronic illnesses. There is a vast body of research emphasizing the importance of lifestyle factors in the management of chronic illness, and in this regard, cancer is no different from diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Despite the known benefit of lifestyle support for people living with cancer, there are few programs available that offer practical support in areas such as nutrition, exercise, and stress management. InspireHealth is a B.C.-based not-for-profit organization offering supportive care to individuals living with cancer as well as their loved ones. With locations in Victoria, Vancouver and Kelowna, over 16,000 individuals seek support annually. The mission is to inspire people affected by cancer to enhance their quality of life and well-being by integrating wisdom and evidence-informed practices that support mind, body and spirit. This is facilitated by a team of medical doctors, exercise therapists, clinical counsellors, dietitians and nutritionists who provide individuals with both one-on-one consultations, as well as group programming. Thanks to funding from the BC Ministry of Health, The Victoria Foundation, The Lotte and John Hecht Memorial Foundation, as well as
many local corporate and individual donors, InspireHealth's services are all offered free of charge. There is no referral needed for individuals to access services. Simply visit www.inspirehealth.ca to register, or call a local centre. The first in-person step is to attend a Fireside Information Session. Here, individuals will meet in a group setting with a member of InspireHealth's clinical team. Information will be provided about programs and services, and next steps to connect. From there, patients can move into scheduling individualized consultations with a medical doctor, dietitian, exercise therapist and/or clinical counsellor. These sessions provide an opportunity to explore particular questions, key areas of focus and formulate a plan to move forward. The aim is for each patient to feel empowered in their healthcare choices. They may choose to register for weekly classes and programs such as exercise, yoga, meditation, support groups, cooking classes and art therapy. The signature LIFE Program is an introduction to supportive cancer care, a two-day program which explores InspireHealth's foundations of health and healing. Participants are encouraged to bring family members or support people with them. There is no minimal level of participation at InspireHealth. It is based on the individual's preference and areas of focus. InspireHealth aims to provide more than medical appointments. It is a community, and a safe space. "InspireHealth was somewhere to go, somewhere to call – it gave me what was missing when I was going through treatment. I was won over by their quality of care – I was blown away." Another Salish Sea Lantern Festival Success by Gillian Crowley
Magical, entertaining and
participatory are all words that describe the Fifth Annual Salish Sea Festival held this year in late August. Smiles and wide-eyed amazement from all ages added to an evening filled with music and hundreds of LED-lit lanterns on Sidney's waterfront. Organized by Artistic Director Jennifer Witvliet and the ArtSea Community Arts Council, with help from other community groups, this festival was the largest yet with 800 to 1,000 people attending. Many of the lanterns were built in workshops offered throughout the summer and this year there were many more costumed characters in outfits inspired by the Salish Sea. Wayne McNiven, ArtSea director, says: "As the word spreads about the exciting festival experience, the numbers of those participating and attending are increasing." The festival celebrates First Nations culture and highlighted the W̱SÁNEĆ people and the SENĆOŦEN language. The event kicked off with a collaborative presentation of new music from Renee Samson and The Wilds, mixing First Nation traditional styles with folk music sung in both English and SENĆOŦEN. Renee and The Wilds will also play at the Mary Winspear Centre in November. With the beautiful backdrop of Sidney's waterfront and Mount Baker in the distance, the evening was further enhanced by life-sized Orcas from the Canadian Orca Rescue Society and the festival's new Spirit Orca Calf lantern. The Sidney Pier was lit with decorative paper bags containing LED lights and at dusk illuminated lanterns were placed along the pier. Following 45 minutes of music and entertainment, the procession of the lanterns began, led by Renee and the children from ȽÁU, WELṈEW̱ Tribal School in Brentwood Bay. Everyone proceeded along the sea walk, ending with songs at the foot of Sidney Pier. This year community engagement and partnership increased as St. Andrews Anglican Church provided space in August for ongoing lantern workshops and studio space. Our group brought energy and enthusiasm to our September meeting, to discuss Kate Morton's The Clockmaker's Daughter. Despite being nearly 500 pages long, everyone had read the Austrailian writer's latest novel, or at least some part of it. Morton is an extremely popular author and many of the group had previously read her other titles, and there was definitely a divide between those who were new to her, and those who approached this book with high expectations based on The Lake House, The House at Riverton, The Secret Keeper or other titles. The Clockmaker's Daughter has a mystery at its heart, and a twisting storyline told by multiple voices across hundreds of years. In the present day there's a sensible young archivist, Elodie, who discovers a photo and journal that have been lost for years. Her curiosity is sparked when she realises that a sketch in the journal is of a house described to her by her mother, who died tragically and young. Entwined with Elodie's search for the location of the picture and its meaning to her mother, is the story of Birdie, featured in the photo and also deeply connected to the house. The reader soon discovers that the house – Birchwood – plays a starring role in the story, and gradually we meet all its inhabitants through the years. The multiple character storylines and jumping around through history was something that our readers both loved and disliked. For some, the complexity is what made the book so enjoyable, for others it was too much detail and too many characters. It certainly was hard to get more than a character sketch with so many people involved and some readers wondered if they were all really necessary. Generally though it felt like wonderful summer reading. Light, mysterious, a little bit romantic, and certainly the setting was idyllic and beautifully rendered, capturing the English countryside and big old house very evocatively. There were themes like star-crossed lovers, and dead siblings that echoed through the ages, as well as an interesting and ongoing discussion of the interplay between science and magic. Many of our group were interested to find other books by Morton, though one member suggested that her books are like comfort food: "you wouldn't want to have too much!" For our next meeting we'll be reading a non-fiction selection, Ben MacIntyre's The Spy & The Traitor. Please join us at the Sidney/North Saanich library on Wednesday October 16 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Capturing Light and Mood: Kathryn Amisson

Kathryn Amisson's journey
as an artist is a story of natural talent buoyed by self-confidence and sheer gutsiness. Mainly self-taught, Kathryn says: "Today I marvel at where I started and where I've ended up." This Brentwood Bay artist's impressionist paintings of coastal scenes, luminous clouds and prairie landscapes can now be found on the walls of major art collectors, at galleries in B.C. and Alberta and in corporate collections. Many of her recent acrylic paintings are in large format and triptychs to meet customers' requests. Born in Manitoba, Kathryn moved with her family to the West Coast as a youngster. She showed artistic talent early on and in grade one was creating full figures when most six year olds were drawing stick people. She jokes: "I became the go-to artist at every school I attended." After high school graduation in Victoria, Kathryn attended the Alberta School of Art for a short time but found the faculty's emphasis on abstract painting didn't resonate with her. A marriage and a government job followed and for the next seven years she worked for the federal government, advancing to a supervisory position. During that time she sustained her love of art by creating works in chalk pastels. Following divorce in her late 20s, Kathryn had an epiphany. Single again, with no children, she decided this would be the perfect time to put all her energies into her art. After quitting her well-paying job, she paid the bills by getting a part-time job matting and framing paintings for well-known artist Peter Shostak and his wife. From this opportunity she not only developed artistically but also learned the business side of the art world. Over the next decade she focused mainly on chalk pastels of children and pets which proved to be a saleable endeavour. In 1988, though, a visit to the Tofino area reignited her creativity and she began to paint the dramatic West Coast scenery.
Kathryn observes that at first she was a representational artist who worked from photographs. Today, she says: "At this stage I'm confident enough to start with a photo and then put it away and paint from an image in my mind." She has gradually moved towards a "looser," more abstract style, although the subject matter is still evident. Her acrylic paintings are full of light and movement. In one, a cloud kisses the horizon where the sun peeks through and is reflected on water. In another, a wall of foaming waves appears about to engulf the viewer. As one technique, Kathryn uses drywall compound as a base where she plans to paint the focal point. The shape of that "goop" often helps her decide where to take the painting. She also likes to add layers of tissue paper to build texture into the scene. Thinking about her painting style she says: "I like colour and use it to convey happiness through my paintings." A special memory is her 21 years as one of the Artists in Residence at "Painters at Painter's" in Campbell River at Painter's Lodge. There she met renowned Canadian artists like Ted Harrison, Toni Onley, Pat Martin Bates and Arthur Vickers. "It was an enriching experience to work alongside such well-known artists," she recalls. Kathryn gives credit to her second husband, Graeme Roberts, whose marketing expertise was invaluable on the business side. Happily, he also persuaded her to try acrylics when she tired of chalk pastels and oil. Her paintings can now be found at five galleries: Peninsula Gallery, Sidney; Gallery 8, Salt Spring Island; The Gallery in Oak Bay Village; Adele Campbell Fine Art Gallery, Whistler; and the Stephen Lowe Art Gallery, Calgary. Kathryn frequently gives back to the community by contributing paintings to auctions at her chosen charities. Sidney Rotary Club Marks Historic Progress The Rotary Club of Sidney by the Sea will mark historic progress toward a polio-free world on October 23 starting at 6:30 p.m. with a Polio Plus Light Up to be illuminated on the new Sidney Community Safety Building at 2245 Oakville Avenue. The event is among thousands to be held by Rotary Clubs around the world to mark World Polio Day. When Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative more than three decades ago, polio paralyzed 1,000 children every day. We've made great progress against the disease since then. Polio Cases have dropped by 99.9%, from 350,000 cases in 1988 in 125 countries to 33 cases of wild poliovirus in 2018 in just two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. Rotary has contributed more then $1.9 billion to ending polio since 1985. With it nearly eradicated, Rotary and its partners must sustain the progress and continue to reach every child with the polio vaccine. Without full funding and political commitment, this paralyzing disease could return to polio-free countries, putting children everywhere at risk. Rotary has committed to raising US$50 million each year to support global polio eradication efforts. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged to match that 2-to-1, for a total yearly contribution of $150 million.

Flexibility in Modern Office Design and, Hey, Sometimes It's Really All About the View!

When you think of modern office design, do you think of smart acoustics, living walls of green plants, control over your own level of lighting and heating, hammocks for hanging out, used gondolas for meeting rooms? Or do you think of people fixated on their computer screens in rooms with no windows, sound problems, and an aesthetic that largely resembles a large closet? Or how about rows of fluorescent-lit, beige cubicles with people filed anonymously away until they depart for the day? Flexible work arrangements, technological advances, the smart phone, laptop computer and video conferencing have given us the freedom to work almost anywhere, at any time. On a warm fall day, you can click on a laptop set on a picnic table to buy ETFs or bitcoin, or respond to important emails in between bites of kale salad and blackberry muffins. In winter, a skier riding up a steep mountainside chair lift can respond to questions from staff and clients, without missing a run. And your office doesn't even have to be on land. A little later in this article, I will let you in on a secret – the location of one of the most beautiful offices in the world. For those of us who do work in an office, the desk space is all-important! Just think about how many hours a day us 21st-century worker bees sit, rounding our shoulders and jutting our chins forward to read the small print on phones, notebooks and monitors. If it's 10 hours a day, five days a week, then that's 50 hours a week! Can you imagine how hard that is on the human body, sitting motionless, as stressors stream in through the monitor? Such a sustained position can lead to future (or current) neck and back pain, headaches, and ever-worsening posture as the neck muscles shorten in front and lengthen in the back. Checking in with a health professional to learn posture exercises is a great investment in longterm health. Why wait until your spine has incurred permanent damage? Thoughtful office design includes space for a stand-up desk, height-adjustable desk, or sit-stand desk. Moving back and forth from sitting to standing throughout the workday only makes sense. Not too much of either one! The monitor has to be at the

right height though – it should be adjusted so that your neck and head stay in alignment and your eyes should look slightly downward when viewing the middle of the screen. If you have questions or specific physical constraints, an ergonomist or occupational therapist can support you in finding the right setup. Anti-fatigue mats can be added to help alleviate foot or leg pain. A wireless headset offers an opportunity to raise energy levels by walking around and stretching while talking on the phone. Moving along from the all-important desk space, let's check in with architect Silvia Bonet (partner, Finlayson Bonet Architecture) who says that current workspaces are moving away from a defined and personalized work area to flexible spaces with "hot desks" that are shared by workers on different shifts. "The concept of flexibility," says Silvia, "translates to the absence of conventional partitions delineating each person's work area." This includes movable walls or space configuration that change according to the needs and personal wishes of the staff. "A central work area is conducive to the concept of collaboration, but on the downside, it can be noisy and disruptive at times," which can cause additional stress when trying to communicate with clients and contractors. "In summary," says Silvia, "we can work remotely but we need to share space where ideas are discussed, education takes place, and 86 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | OCTOBER 2019
there is an interaction between workers. This space is a combination of open areas, private work pods and meeting rooms, not to mention the lunchroom where the casual lunch hour is another opportunity for communication and interaction. Appreciating each person's contribution to the growth and reputation of a business is reflected in a workplace where people are not secluded but openly sharing and communicating." Silvia adds: "An office should be a luminous place, connected to the outside, or to a quiet interior courtyard with large windows that makes a visual transition from the interior to the exterior space." Moving from structural office design to interior design, I asked two designers to describe what their perfect office would look and feel like. Trudi Jones (Trudi Jones Interior Design) says that her office would feature an open plan with work stations that promote collaborative interaction. "The furnishing would be sleek and comfortable with a very organic feel, including plants, wood and windows overlooking a view. I would also like a library for sourcing products and ideas. The walls would be a calm gray colour (Benjamin Moore AF-690) with off-white trim and wood accents, and the floor would be polished concrete." Andi Hook (Hook & Hook Renovations & Design Inc.) says her ideal office space would overlook the ocean and have a ton of natural
light. "It would be crisp and clean with white oak floating shelves. I would have a u-shaped desktop, paired with matte white drawers and storage with splashes of blush pink and brushed gold." And finally, as promised, where is the location of one of the most beautiful offices in the world? It is the spacious glass-walled bridge located high above the bow on the Northern Expedition, the BC Ferry that takes passengers and freight on a 15-hour trip from Port Hardy through the Inside Passage to Prince Rupert: the departure point for Haida Gwaii. During my tour of the bridge, Second Officer Graham McKechnie says the incredible view is the best part about his office. "I've worked on the ferries for 30 years, and still there is something different every day; just when you think you have seen it all, something new comes your way. Sunsets off Port Hardy and Prince Rupert in the summertime are amazing." Even with all the sophisticated satellite technology in the bridge, deckhand/helmsman Jeremiah Knechtel searches the rippled sea ahead with binoculars for logs, boats or sea life that may necessitate a course change. As salmon splash and a humpback whale breaches off the starboard bow, Third Officer/Navigator Larry Lohnes says he has seen spirit bears and mountain goats on land and bears and deer swimming across Grenville Channel. Now that's my kind of office!

Art is defined as the expression of creative skill and imagination in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, appreciated for beauty or for the emotional power evoked from it. In the home, generally considered our "haven," it's especially important to consider how works of art, whether it be painting, sculpture or even furnishings, are used. As designers, Trudi Jones and I often look to special pieces for clues about the client to use as design inspiration or as a "taking-off" point for our designs. An entire room or home design can start with the initial influence coming from a piece of artwork that is important to the client, and in our designs we express something that signifies the client. Art choices are often very personal, especially when used in the home. As an example, a client of ours possessed a number of interesting Asian pieces, most of them passed down through the years. One particular piece caught our eye – the Asian black lacquered and jade screen – but it was not featured well in the existing furniture arrangement. After our renovation was complete, in which we drew inspiration from the Asian screen as well as the beautiful ocean views, friends of the client asked if the screen was new although they had walked past it many times! It was the catalyst for our design, pulling jewel tones and restful seaside colours from it for the paintwork, furniture, draperies and accessories. Artwork may simply hold special meaning for the owner, for example, an object acquired while travelling, a painting or sculpture by Wendy White

passed down through family generations, an antique or handwoven carpet, or perhaps a piece created by a family member. As an example, my sister's bold and colourful paintings grace the walls of all of my family members. Personal values as well as family ideals can be expressed in artwork, as illustrated with this portrait of the Holy Family (above), commissioned by one of our clients for their new home, installed above the master bed. The clients' deep Christian faith is reflected in the icon. Artwork can be used to enhance the atmosphere of the space and to add to the overall experience of the user in it. The colours in an art piece may be used to complement and emphasize different design elements in the room, adjacent rooms, or outdoor living spaces, tying the rooms together to create a seamless flow from one to another. Additionally, the colours used in artwork can be useful in creating warmth or coolness, excitement or restfulness, within a space. Colour in general can be used to warm a north-facing room or to cool a south-facing exposure, and this includes not only paint colours but all accessories including art. The nice thing about pieces of art is that they are most often easily moved and can be tried in multiple spaces and locations – or they can be changed out with the seasons along with other design objects to reflect a special time of year as suits the owner or client. Why is it that, of several hundred Client Investment portfolios I have encountered, the greatest majority were initially heavily-skewed toward Canadian Equities? Many favour this home-country concentration for the often-substantial tax advantages of dividends received from Canadian corporations. In British Columbia for example, an individual with no income other than Canadian dividend income in a Non-Registered account, could receive up to $52,000 annually in such dividends, with zero tax consequence. Aside from our natural inclination to invest heavily in our own country, these tax advantages reinforce our bias toward Canadian holdings. While this bias can indeed save us some taxes, it may, unfortunately, also create a substantial drag on our portfolio’s total returns. At the end of July, 2019, the historical 10-year annual total return of key Equity Markets stood at: - Canadian S&P/TSX Composite Index: 7.8% - U.S. S&P 500 Index: 16.1% - Global MSCI World Index: 12.0% These results reinforce the substantial benefits of balancing holdings across geographic areas. A balanced geographic distribution of Equity investments over the past 10 years would have produced superior returns for the investor – far outweighing any
foregone tax benefits in Non-Registered portfolios. The tax benefits of CDN dividends in NonRegistered accounts do not apply to RRSP, RRIF, LIRA, LIF, or RESP accounts – none of which attract taxes until withdrawals are made. And TFSAs, perpetually tax-exempt, also reap zero tax advantage from Canada-heavy investments. In these accounts, the homecountry bias becomes even less logical. Over-concentration of Canadian Equity holdings in Non-Registered accounts carries another risk – the potential claw-back of OAS benefits when individual taxable income exceeds approximately $78,000 annually. Notwithstanding the tax benefits received, OAS claw-back risk is accentuated by the fact that in recording CDN dividend income, the actual dividend is grossed-up by 38% before inclusion in taxable income; each $1,000 of CDN dividend income is recorded as $1,380 in income – adding to the risk of encroaching on the clawback threshold. While no investor can predict with any degree of certainty which geographic sector will outperform over the next decade, geographic diversification offers significant benefits. With Canada representing only about 3% of the world’s capital markets, it is reasonable to balance investments across multiple geographic areas. In doing so, we not only reduce geographic concentration risk, but also, in all likelihood, enhance total returns over the long term.

Last Christmas, I bought a Cricut. For those who don't know what that is, picture all those rustic farmhouse signs that are so trendy, the mugs with clever sayings popping up in the lunchroom at your office, and the colourful bows and headbands your granddaughter is now sporting. Chances are a Cricut made these, and this is just a small sampling of what this DIY powerhouse can do. For several years now I've been a crafter, enjoying creating gifts for friends and family and little pieces of dÊcor for my home, and I saw the Cricut as a natural next step in my hobby. I didn't really have a plan, beyond doing a deeper dive into the world of crafts, but somehow, three months ago, my Cricut inspired me to start my own business. In this issue writer Jesse Holth explores the growing trend of the "side hustle," whereby over a third of adults, either through necessity or passion, are becoming small business owners while still maintaining a more traditional day job. I've now joined the ranks of these entrepreneurs, and a love of a particular pair of earrings led to a series which led to a business name (Left Shore
Creative), more styles, some home dÊcor, and, most importantly, sales! A local business, Spruce Clothing in Brentwood Bay, has even recently started carrying my earrings. A side hustle doesn't have to be about money. These extra entrepreneurial "gigs" are often called passion projects for good reason – they may not make a lot of profit, but they give the people behind them an outlet for their creativity, a stress reliever, or simply something to look forward to at the end of a long day. Our day job no longer needs to be the only way we define ourselves, which is important in a job market where people tend to change careers more frequently and job security is more tenuous. Having something else that we love to do, whether a side business, hobby or sport we play, can be the thing that helps keep us feel fulfilled and inspired. Maybe now is the perfect time for you to try a little business on the side!
