I like to see people succeed in their efforts and yet, despite good intentions, so many start programs and quit or get injured. Success in fitness is about understanding, planning and dedication and I enjoy teaching fitness as an education, not just movement without meaning.
Climate change and habitat loss threaten the stability of ecosystems across the planet. The conservation of these places is essential to community resilience. Land protection safeguards ecological processes that then provide essential services like carbon sequestration and habitat provision; we must protect ecosystems so they can protect us.
As we approach the end of our first year of Beacon Brewing being open, it is exciting to be able to share our experience with Seaside readers, many of whom have contributed to our first year's success, and introduce this year's Professionals participants. Cheers to you all, and to many more years of delicious beer!

Fashion is a wonderful way for us to express our individuality and define our personal style. It can help us feel beautiful and confident! We enjoyed pairing distinctly different styles of boots and a loafer to illustrate how changing your shoes and accessories can completely change your look.
Inspiration comes in all shapes and sizes you need only slow down and open your mind and heart to find it. It may be in someone you just met or in the barista at your favourite coffee shop – do you know their name, their story? Be curious; ask questions; lean in!
Fashion … not a word I use often; however, being comfortable at work is essential. You put a lot of miles on working in a coffee house, so great footwear is a must. The rest of my wardrobe falls into place based on the time of year.

First Word
from the
Publisher
Sue Hodgson
I'm not sure what's better … producing our magazine every month or hearing from our readers and the community about how much they love what they read every month in Seaside! The magazine has been published for well over a decade now, but we can still find brilliant people, places and businesses to talk about as part of our editorial lineup. We live in such a diverse community, from agriculture and farming to entrepreneurism and industry, including various far-reaching global companies right in our backyard. All of which are doing business within a few miles of each other. It's pretty remarkable! This month we are celebrating our special issue – The Professionals (in conjunction with Small Business Week) – and it touches a small but mighty representative of our local business community. How robust that community is! It's so easy to open your laptop and shop online, but those huge international online stores are likely not the ones doing good in your community. We have a choice about the money we spend and whether it stays in our local economy or not. I think people sometimes forget, in the rush for convenience, how much small businesses are a part of their community and help in so many ways; whether it's sponsoring local sporting events, supporting the school band or helping with activities for our kids. Local businesses are owned for the most part by local people. They are our neighbours, your friends and family. So, my BIG ASK this issue is to spend time to REALLY get to know your local business community. We have three amazing municipalities, each with their own special qualities. Visit a business you haven't been to before and share a few words and smiles with them. I'm sure you will find them all inviting and anxious to share their story with you! I'd love to hear what new business you visited in October … we can share our stories!

THE PROFESSIONALS A Community Connected:
BRINGING PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL JOY by Alexa & Tristan Fetherston and Steven Hardy, owners, Beacon Brewing | photo by Nunn Other Photography
When we were asked to write the intro for Seaside Magazine's October Professionals feature, we were honoured. We don't see ourselves as "professionals" in our daily lives; we are just a family running our family business and trying to make people happy and give back to the community through our brewery. After two years of building our business, we opened our brewery and tasting room in October of 2021, at the tail end of the COVID-19 mandates. We consider ourselves to be lucky with the timeline of how everything worked out for us. Yes, it was tough to navigate a brand new business, especially a service industry related one, with constant changes from the government, but the community of Sidney and the craft beer community were both quite supportive. And seeing as it was the only way we knew of running it, we believe it was actually easier on us compared to a business that had been running pre-Covid and forced to implement changes and endure extra hardships. The town and community of Sidney welcomed us with open arms (and mouths) and even before we opened the doors in October, there was a buzz surrounding us being the first brewery in Sidney. Once open, there was a little confusion from some as to what we actually were – a brew pub? A bar? But after a quick stop in the tasting room, and a chat with one of the three owners (one of us is always around,
as any small business owner will know!), people quickly understood that instead of a place to sit and have a full meal, our atmosphere was more about being the local neighbourhood hang location, with great beer, tasty snacks, fun games and a casual environment where everyone (including kids) is welcome. People can see that Sidney is changing and evolving, and this beautiful little seaside town is no longer just a place people pass on their way to or from the ferry. Nor is it seen as a sleepy bedroom community for Victoria. It's a destination for many reasons now, and we feel privileged to hopefully be considered one of them. We are excited to see what the future holds for Sidney. We have loved meeting so many people over the past year and creating meaningful and lasting relationships with those we never would have connected with without opening this brewery. Seeing the faces of regulars walk through our door day in and day out not only brings us joy from a professional side, but from a personal side as well. We now consider so many of these people our friends, and even family. Coming from Salt Spring Island originally, the three of us understand that a community the size and as tight knit as Sidney thrives only when everyone is rooting for everyone else. We can't wait to continue our journey as entrepreneurs in this community, and to meet so many more people and friends along the way! OCTOBER 2022 | SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA 13
DON GULEVICH
Coastal Heat Pumps Don laughs as he says that he has been in the heating and cooling HVAC industry since the 1900s … 1978 to be exact! The main mission of Don and his wife Joanne, the founders of Coastal Heat Pumps, is to provide in-home energy efficient comfort to their servicing communities. Don and Joanne made a conscious decision to specialize in residential heat pumps and to be a local leader in the industry. With the help of Provincial and federal grants and financing options, there is a higher demand for heat pumps, making it easier and more affordable for homeowners to install a heat pump. Coastal Heat Pumps is making a positive difference in reducing a homeowners’ carbon footprint by switching to electric in-home heating and eliminating fossil fuels as a heat source. It has never been a better time to switch, and you can save up to 50% on your heating bill. It’s a win-win. Coastal Heat Pumps ensures that every heat pump they install is from high quality and reputable brands like Samsung, Mitsubishi, and Fujitsu. They will also help you understand the different choices of systems available by providing you with the information needed to make a comfortable decision that is right for your home and comfort. Don has a simple philosophy towards his business: “to treat others the way I want to be treated, and that includes customers, employees, and suppliers … because at Coastal Heat Pumps we are not comfortable until you are.”

ALLELES Design Studio:
Redesigning the World of Prosthetics by Jamila Douhaibi
While working on her
Master's degree in Industrial Design in Calgary, McCauley Wanner was researching options for her thesis. She found that the medical industry had overwhelmingly homogenous devices, with very little personalization for the many individuals that use them. She also found that a common thread around fashion was that people, in general, found it frivolous. But McCauley saw fashion as a great tool for identity and self-expression. She started talking to people about the idea of accessorizing their prosthetics, and the positive reaction acted as the initial building blocks for a company she would later start: ALLELES Design Studio. During her time at the University of Calgary, McCauley met Ryan Palibroda, who was working on his thesis in architecture. She says that the pair spent hours brainstorming and refining her thesis, entitled "Empowering by Revealing: A Study in the Hybridity of Fashion & Prosthetics." After finishing school, the two cofounded ALLELES in the fall of 2013. 16 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | OCTOBER 2022
ALLELES is a Canadian-based design and manufacturing studio that creates unique above and below knee prosthetic covers for amputees, clinics and prosthetists around the world. Their studio is located in Victoria, where every cover is individually made for each client. Rather than using 3D printing, the studio creates the covers out of a single piece of FDA-grade ABS plastic, so that each custom piece fits the wearer and can be modified if need be. This technique also maximizes the functionality and durability of the waterproof covers. These adjustable covers attach to a person's prosthesis with two polyurethane straps with metal hooks, and can be removed for cleaning, or if an individual wants to switch styles. McCauley and Ryan's artistic backgrounds extend beyond their time in university. McCauley grew up in remote towns, first in Alberta and then northern Saskatchewan. Both of her parents were creative, constantly doing home redecorating, and building and fixing out of any materials they had. McCauley says that this childhood was a positive enforcement for imagination and problem solving, as well as preparing herself for the tough work ethic needed when starting the company. Ryan, on the other hand, was an exhibiting painter for over 10 years, and McCauley attributes many of the studio's "little quirks" and great designs to him. McCauley says that there is a beautiful and exciting process of creating designs for a client's personality, which pulls together the client's whole aesthetic. Her favourite cover is one of Ryan's designs, called Deep Eyes. She says that the cover's blue background and red honeycomb design, with large circular cut-outs, shows Ryan's ingenuity in the field of design. His ability to create covers that she believes are ahead of their time, with cool touches and bizarre names, makes him the perfect partner for the company. McCauley says that she and Ryan ended up in this business in large part because of their personalities. Just as people can choose between so many styles and colours for eyewear, they saw a need for that in the medical world of prosthetics. She says that, for her and Ryan, design is really about "observing the world around you, seeing the potential and beauty in areas that are often overlooked and then addressing these observations through design." Their creativity led them beyond typical design industries to a place where what they do has a really positive influence. One of their main missions, of course, is in creating choice. Their website has over 60 designs in their online look book, as well as the ability to choose between 32 curated colours. There is a range of simpler, more economical covers, to the more colourful, or custom, options. ALLELES has also worked hard to ensure that their products will be reimbursed by insurance, if possible. Their website offers a range of information on prices, warranties and more, for anyone interested in purchasing covers from around the world. The hope for ALLELES, says McCauley, is to enable people to have control over their medical devices. An estimated one billion people in the world experience some kind of disability, but are still such an under-served demographic, and McCauley and Ryan are working to change that reality. McCauley says that her team is optimistic that more designers will "follow us into the medical world and add their magic to the industry." To find out more and view their creative covers, visit: www.alleles.ca.

LEAVING A LEGACY: STRATEGIC PHILANTHROPY CAN MAKE A MEANINGFUL DIFFERENCE For many Canadians, charitable giving is an important part of our lives. With proper planning your generosity can go a long way in creating a meaningful legacy for the future. Creating your own private foundation can be costly to set up and maintain. There are alternative strategies to consider, like naming a charity in your will or as a beneficiary on your registered investment account, or creating a Donor Advised Fund (DAF). What is a Donor Advised Fund (DAF)? A DAF is an alternative to a private foundation. It's like having your own charitable foundation, but it's less complex with significantly lower costs. A DAF is an existing registered charity, which places your donations in a separate account. Most DAFs allow you to name your account on behalf of yourself, a family member or a loved one. You then "fund" the account by making a donation in cash or securities. You receive a tax receipt upon transferring the funds (or shares) to your DAF and the assets grow tax free within the account so the designated charities may benefit from larger gifts in the future. Keep in mind the additional tax benefit of donating securities with capital gains since the capital gains tax is eliminated with an "in-kind" donation. The Benefits of a DAF: Although you receive the tax benefit immediately after transferring the funds to your DAF, you don't need to direct the entire amount immediately to a charity. The funds can grow tax-free and each year you can recommend distributions to be made out of your DAF to registered charities of your choice. You can change the charities at any time and even appoint a successor to the account, such as your children, so they can continue in the same role after you've passed. Fall for a New Routine:
WHY THE CHANGE IN SEASONS IS THE PERFECT TIME FOR A SHAKEUP There are times of the year when it seems natural to change things up. Seasonal weather changes often mean pulling out something different from the wardrobe, or a switch from indoor to outdoor activities. But there are deeper reasons why we should be thinking about shaking up our routines: sometimes repeating the same actions day after day can result in fewer and poorer results. We've asked four local experts to share their tips and tricks for switching up the routine as we move into a new season.
The benefits of changing up your hair routine shouldn't be overlooked! Sometimes our hair has absorbed all of the benefits to our current products and appears be "bored." Hair has memory! Just as we change our styles with the season, we should focus on how the environment can impact our hair. As it gets cooler outside, our hair may get drier. Now, I know what you're thinking: "with all our rain, Annilee Armstrong, Owner, Red's Chair Hair Salon how is this possible?" Yes, our environment is damp, but our hair isn't absorbing the outside moisture as conditioner. In fact, the cooler air actually takes that away from our hair – which is why you may see static, or extra flyaways. Switching from summer products to fall products will help, depending on your hair type. You may perceive that you need a smoothing product when in reality, your strands may just be dry and need a great conditioning treatment. Sometimes there is a need to reassess our hair needs based on lifestyle, or circumstances beyond our control. Things may change as we age, lose or gain weight, stress or even take medication. Moving to a different climate sends our tresses into a different state as well – moving from the prairies to the coast will send your hair for a loop. Talk to your beauty professional about your specific needs. There is never too much information; it only helps us determine a path with you. Some changes are simple, while others are a process and take time to adjust to.
Hair!
When I was studying to be an esthetician (23 years ago!) we were taught that facials should be done regularly, approximately every four to six weeks. While that still works for many, not everyone will want, or be able to have, a facial treatment that often. For me, the key times to focus on your skin are when the seasons change. This is especially true in the fall after summer. Alana Delcourt,Fresh Skincare Just as the temperature and humidity changes each season, so does & Paramedical Tattoo our skin and our skincare needs. The weather isn't the same 365 days a year; nor should our skincare routine be. My clients know that I'm fanatical about sunscreen and protecting the skin from sun damage. My hope is that the end of the summer isn't the time to assess damages, but I'm also realistic. Summer heat contributes to an increase in oil production, sweat and heavier applications of sunscreen. This means our skin can be oilier than usual, there can be breakout and texture issues, and of course, sun exposure can lead to colour issues. In fall I like to recommend a focus on exfoliation. This can be gentle, or a bit more aggressive, depending on what your skin care needs, concerns and conditions are. There's also cooler weather, wind and a drop in humidity, which can mean dry air and even drier skin. Mix this with indoor dry heat and it can be a trigger for skin issues like eczema and itchy skin. I might start layering a serum with a moisturizer in preparation for colder temperatures and drier skin. In the same way you trade in your summer flip flops for boots in the fall – and find you crave less salads and more soups and stews – so too do you need to modify your skincare routine and products, to fit the conditions.

Changing up your exercise program: Injuries happen in fitness, and the more active you are the greater the risk. To prevent injuries and get the results you desire, it's important to not overdo any one type of exercise, ie: running. Having a routine that includes a variety of training sessions is critical – twice a week for strength, stretching and cardio. Regardless of your favourite training program, it's helpful to make changes to intensity, format, frequency and duration. Ron Cain, Personal Trainer If you train the exact same way over and over again the most likely consequence will be mental stagnation, over training and injury. For example, if you are a runner, train at a different distance and pace in each of your runs such as a light, medium, and hard format in any given week. If you're doing resistance training, follow a routine for six to 12 weeks then take a week off to get a great rest. Follow this by changing your routine; for example, switching from a heavy workout doing three sets of four to eight repetitions to an endurance workout doing 15 to 20 repetitions with a lighter weight. The percentage of people that actually stick to an exercise schedule and do not drop out after a few months is not very high. You can maximize your chances for success by keeping a consistent schedule and enjoying different types of exercise to challenge your mind and body. Don't be afraid to try a new activity; it challenges your brain and maintains your motivation. Exercise adds years to your life and life to your years!
Fitness!
The foundation of good nutrition is to form simple, sustainable, healthy habits. These habits include eating slowly and mindfully when you're hungry and stopping when you're not hungry (notice, I didn't say stop when you're full?). Good habits emphasize whole and minimize processed foods while prioritizing nutrient density by getting enough quality protein and Chrystal Ladouceur, RMT, CPT, CrossFit L2 & Nutrition Coach lots of veggies in at every meal. These fundamental habits should be consistent, and need not ever change. However, shaking things up sometimes can add flavour and variety to your diet. Changing what we eat from season to season, based on what grows locally, can be beneficial to our wallets, our bodies and our environment. Now is a great time to freeze some of our locally grown fruits, veggies and berries. We can sprinkle them into winter! We can find ways to incorporate more dense winter vegetables like cabbage or squash, and root vegetables like parsnips, potatoes and yams into our diets. We can prepare them in advance and freeze them for easy slow cooker or freezer-to-oven type meals – great for lazy winter evenings! And as the days grow shorter and darker, we can eat as many foods rich in Vitamin D as possible to help fend off any winter blues. Foods that are rich in Vitamin D include salmon, sardines, swordfish or tuna fish, beef liver and egg yolk. Cereals, dairy milk and various plant milks are fortified with Vitamin D, too. Change can be simple, sustainable and healthy while tasting amazing!

Keeping You Safe and Smiling on Your Bicycle Cycling is a fun way to build strength, cardiovascular fitness, increase mobility, and help with osteoarthritis pain. Most of us learn to ride bikes when we are young and sometimes don't get the opportunity to ride again until we are older. Luckily, we don't seem to forget how to ride and yet there are a few things that are crucial to your riding experience that don't come with muscle memory. Let's explore some of these "secrets" of biking: Buying the right bike. There are many types of bicycles: e-bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes, road bikes and triathlon bikes, to name a few. You'll want to give some thought to where you plan to ride. Some factors to consider are your fitness, the terrain on which you ride, whether you plan to ride on trails, weight of the bike, and cost. Riding a bike that fits you. Bike frames are sized depending on your height and leg length. It's important to have a bike fit by a physiotherapist or a bike fitter to help position you on your bike for cycling comfort and efficiency. They will help you choose the correct seat and make adjustments to the seat position, handlebars and pedals to prevent injuries to lower back, neck and knee pain. Wearing the right clothes. Bike shorts with a chamois are encouraged because they're designed to fit next to your skin to prevent chafing and wick moisture away. Additionally, gloves can help to protect your hands and alleviate tingling and numbness. Don't forget your helmet!
Riding with friends. The camaraderie of cycling is a great way to keep in touch with friends and enjoy exercising. When riding in a group, it's important to be predictable: signal your intentions (slowing, stopping, turning), and point out hazards. This communication is key to staying "rubber side down" when you are riding in a group. Planning your route. Vancouver Island is one of the most amazing places to ride. We have access to the Galloping Goose and Lochside trails, mountain biking routes, roads with ocean vistas, quiet country roads and highland hill climbs. Some epic day trips include the Three Ferries Ride and the trip to Hurricane Ridge. A great way to discover new routes and meet new friends that ride is to join a cycling club. Training. Your goals might be to enter the Tour de Victoria, ride around the airport with your grandchildren, or travel to Europe for a bike and barge tour. It's important to train so that you will have the fitness, endurance and strength to enjoy your chosen adventure. In the off season, you could ride a stationary bike, utilize an indoor trainer, go to spin classes or cross train by swimming in the pool, doing exercise classes, or weight training. Learning to ride with proper pedal stroke and choosing the right cadence will help you ride strong and keep up with your buddies. "You never have the wind with you – either it is against you or you're having a good day." ~ D. Behrman

What's Happening eni en nin ing ng Doug and the Slugs
Friday, October 21
Unquestionably, Doug and the Slugs are one of the most distinctive and entertaining Canadian bands of the last 40 years. Their upbeat musical style, musicianship and offbeat stage antics have made them a staple of the Canadian music scene for decades. Formed in Vancouver in the fall of 1977, the band originally consisted of Doug Bennett, John Burton (guitar), Drew Neville (keyboards), Dennis Henderson (bass) and Lawrence McGillveray (drums). The rest is history – The Slugs toured relentlessly and went on to produce 7 albums (3 of them certified Gold) and proved to be a ‘national treasure’. The band also had international releases in the US, Europe and Australia. They had underground success and critical acclaim in America, and helped launch the video era with Slug videos among the first getting heavy rotation on MTV, due to their film-like quality and humour. Tragically, on October 16, 2004, Canada lost one of its greatest entertainers and songwriters when Doug Bennett passed away in a Calgary hospital. Indeed, the Slugs wondered if they could ever continue without Doug. For several years they did not even consider the idea, until Bernie Aubin suggested they call Ted Okos, a journeyman rocker for many years with the band ‘Nick Danger’. Ted and the original slugs, John Burton, Simon Kendall, Steve Bosley, Wally Watson and Richard Baker, hit it off immediately. Ted’s high energy delivery and warm, but slightly irreverent stage antics, and his keen understanding of the essence of the songs, made him the obvious choice for a rebirth of ‘Doug and the Slugs.’
Paula Cole
Friday, October 28 Paula Cole is an American singer-songwriter who first gained attention with her triple-Grammy nominated album “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?”. In 1998, Cole won the Best New Artist Grammy for her single “I Don’t Want to Wait”, which was used as the theme song on the television show Dawson’s Creek. Her most recent release titled “American Quilt” was released in May 2021. Besides recording and performing, Cole has also served on the faculty at Berklee College of Music since 2013. Paula Cole has released seven solo albums of original songs. Cole has performed with icons in many genres of music, from Peter Gabriel to Dolly Parton, Herbie Hancock to Emmylou Harris, and Amy Lee of Evanescence to Burt Bacharach. Cole’s emotionally deep performances and her poetic, intelligent writing makes her stand out from the masses of contemporary music. Her compositions have been covered by a diverse range of artists—including Hancock, Annie Lennox, Katherine McPhee, and JoJo— and she has sold approximately 3 million albums. As the first woman in history to solely produce and receive the Best Producer Grammy nomination for her album This Fire, Cole has broken boundaries with a searcher’s spirit. From her top 10 hits of the 1990s to her more recent, critically acclaimed albums, Cole continues to write, produce, record, and perform heartfelt, meaningful, lasting music that defies categorization.

I'm so excited to finally bring this new style of show to the stage. I've been releasing acoustic versions of songs for a while now and performing them on stage is a whole different than what my show for the last 20 years has been. This show feels so much more personal and intimate and lets the audience get the stories behind the songs and hear some of the songs you know in a way no one's ever got to hear before. Can't wait to get back out there and experience it with you all! With an inherent and candid ability to break down the barrier between performer and audience while “leading the vanguard of East Coast hip hop” (Chronicle Herald), Classified is one of Canada’s most respected and successful rap artists, producers, and songwriters. In 2022, Classified will offer fans a stripped-down, acoustic take on some of his biggest and most celebrated hits over the past 20 years.

This season, a great pair of boots (or two) is a must. Boots this season come in every height: short, tall and mid-calf. Another big trend we are loving this fall is loafers, especially those with a chunky sole. An easy and inexpensive way to expand your wardrobe is to change your shoes and accessories. This allows you to create completely different looks, with one outfit … especially handy when you are travelling! Our model is wearing one dress that we paired with three different handbags, accessories and shoes to show you how much it changes the look and function.

Coastal Compass Counselling This is part of a rotating series of articles about some of the Saanich Peninsula's unique shops and services. The past few years have seen more people reaching out for support through counselling. Because the pandemic kept people indoors, it also caused us all to focus internally and realize that many of us need more support than we thought we did with our busy pre-Covid lives. Counselling is a personal experience, and finding the right fit matters more than in many other interactions. Dayle McMillan – a registered clinical counsellor – uses her own experiences, alongside her training, to support individuals in a confidential and non-biased way through Coastal Compass Counselling. Helping others has always attracted Dayle, even from a young age. Aside from Coastal Compass Counselling, inspired from living most of her life on Vancouver Island, Dayle has provided counselling at non-profit organizations in Victoria and Nanaimo. With her own life experience and ties with the community, she brings an understanding and respect to those she works with. Dayle's counselling experience throughout the pandemic has shown her that people often feel more comfortable talking to someone about their struggles virtually, so has continued to offer her services primarily through phone or video sessions. She counsels individuals in a wide range of areas, including anxiety, boundaries, self-care, mindfulness, creating short and long-term goals, relationships and more. Dayle believes that supporting people is rewarding, especially with everything going on in the world right now. Dayle did her undergraduate in Psychology, and her Masters in Psychology with a focus on Counselling. Her thesis examined posttraumatic stress disorder and how it impacts interpersonal relationships. Her educational foundation is strengthened by years of working with people one-to-one. Dayle has seen positive outcomes from using both Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT). She uses CBT and DBT, along with constantly growing her skills, to help others develop their own tools. At the end of the day, Dayle believes that people are the best experts of their lives. She uses her knowledge and genuine care for people to assist others with working through what is important to them. To ensure that individuals find the best fit, Dayle offers the initial consultation – usually around 15 minutes – for free. It can be hard to start this kind of relationship, and Dayle does her best to put the emphasis on her clients, and what they need, rather than focusing on what she can offer. Dayle is available for virtual counselling sessions Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with some flexibility for evenings. Spicing it Up! Condiments are my jam. I'm a big fan of relish, mustard, mayo, ketchup, spicy spreads and yes, most definitely, chutney. I started making chutney years ago when we had a plum tree in our garden that produced millions of little yellow plums. I had to do something with those annoying plums that appeared in the multitudes each year; making and canning chutney became one of my favorite options. It's sweet, it's spicy and it's so darn tasty. I serve it alongside anything and everything: cheese, chicken, beef, pork, roasted veggies and, of course, with curry.
40 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | OCTOBER 2022
There are thousands of different chutney recipes, and I've tried out a number of them. You can adjust the flavours of your chutney with different fruits, using or not using chilis, which type of vinegar is incorporated and how much sugar is added. Chutneys are among the easiest of condiments to make, and they have the advantage of lasting for months when stored. It's always such a pleasure and so satisfying to open up the cupboard in the midst of winter and see the rich colours of chutneys made earlier that year. They're also a wonderful gift. Please don't tell anyone, but I find myself saving the best ones just for my use at home, or I dole them out sparingly. I made an amazing chutney this past spring with oranges that were on sale; I bought way too many as I couldn't resist a deal. I gave some of the jars of orange chutney to friends, but then finally tried it myself and was very pleasantly surprised. The few bottles remaining have been tucked away. We'll see when they re-appear. This month's Bengal Chutney recipe is a well-known Indian condiment with many, many variations. If you prefer, it can be made without the tomatoes; I've done this a few times when I had lots of apples to use up. Chutneys generally simmer for a long time, as the fruit absorbs the vinegar as it cooks down. When you can pull a wooden spoon through the chutney as it's cooking and there's no runny liquid left, then it's ready. And during this simmering stage, your kitchen will be filled with the most glorious aromas: sweet, spicy, tangy, rich, and very, very tantalizing. Try it; like me, you might just get hooked on making this versatile, full-flavoured condiment.
Bengal Chutney 6 apples, cored, chopped 6 tomatoes, chopped 2 onions, chopped 3 ½ cups malt vinegar 1 cup raisins 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2-3 jalapeno peppers, seeded, chopped 1 tbsp mustard seeds ½ cup grated ginger root 1 tbsp salt 1 ¼ cups sugar Combine the apples, tomatoes, onions and vinegar in a large pot. Simmer for about 15 minutes or until the onions and apples are soft. Add remaining ingredients. Simmer until thick and sticky, about 1 hour (or more, depending on how quickly it cooks down). Ladle into hot, sterilized jars, seal; process in a hot water bath for about 20 minutes. This chutney improves with ageing. Keep for a couple of months before using. Makes about 4 pints/8 cups. Recipe can be easily doubled. Preserve the chutney by home canning once the chutney is ready: Clean jars you want to use and put in pan in oven to sterilize for about 20 minutes at
250°. Put lids covered in water in small pot. Put on low on stovetop to soften seal. Keep screw tops for later. Pull hot jars out of oven. Have water bath canner on stove heating up while getting jars ready. Fill water bath canner 2/3 full of water. Fill hot jars with chutney. Leave ½ inch headspace. Use knife to run down insides of jars a couple of times to remove any air bubbles (if any). Wipe the rims with clean cloth, seal with the lids, then screw on the bands until snug. Place the jars in the boiling water bath canner for processing. Cover the jars with water by 1 inch. Bring the water to soft, rolling boil with lid on. Once at soft boil, process for 20 minutes. Turn off the heat and carefully lift out the rack and remove jars from the canner. Set jars on baking rack to cool. Lids should not bounce back if sealed correctly. Press to check once cool. Store jars in cool, dark place. Refrigerate after opening. Take a look online or at cookbooks for more resources on home canning and other chutneys.

Today we find ourselves experiencing an unusual combination of high inflation and falling equity markets. Either one of these events creates a certain amount of stress – particularly among retirees. If still employed, an individual or family can ride out a market downturn, knowing that ample time exists for the inevitable recovery. The impact of high inflation can often be dealt with through adjustments in discretionary spending such as travel and dining out. For retirees, however, the dual impact of declining markets and high inflation can be more traumatic. With shorter investment time horizons, and often dependent solely on fixed income, the impact of inflation becomes a much greater challenge. Are there strategies retirees can adopt to ease this financial stress? Firstly, they should recognize that while they may not have a decades-long investment time horizon, falling equity markets rarely take more than a year or two to return to their previous highs. In fact, over the last 60 years, the dozen “Bear Markets” experienced by the Canadian TSX Index lasted an average of only nine months; U.S. markets, at 14 months, took somewhat longer to recover. Furthermore, the year-to-date decline of North American markets falls far short of the Bear Market definition of a 20% decline. During periods of falling equity markets, the retiree can avoid drawing funds from the equity
segment of a portfolio. Necessary draws can instead be made from the more stable fixed income portion until equity markets recover – at which time sufficient equities should be sold, with the proceeds replenishing the diminished fixed income holding, thus returning to its original percentage allocation. To better cope with inflation, the retiree who owns their residence has the option of deferring Property Taxes at a very low simpleinterest cost, with neither the accumulated interest nor capital becoming payable until the home is eventually sold. The effect of this strategy is to increase disposable income, tax-free, by the full amount of annual property taxes which would otherwise have been paid. The ultimate fall-back strategy for a retired homeowner can be a HELOC (Home Equity Line of Credit) which makes funds available in whatever amount required by the homeowner, with only interest payable monthly. Principal repayments can be deferred indefinitely, until the property is sold. Every effort should be made to avoid using a Reverse Mortgage to solve financial stress. Although no payments are required until the home is sold, the very high accumulating interest rate (combined with deferred principal) results in a rapid, very substantial erosion of equity. Periods of inflation and falling markets can understandably be stressful, particularly for retirees on fixed incomes. By understanding that coping options do exist, much of that stress can be alleviated.

GOING GREEN by Tina Kelly
The Listicle: My Top 9 Those algorithms. You follow one social media page and another, then through likes, shares, comments and other engagements, social media algorithms decide what to display on your newsfeed. So it is not surprising my feed receives a good amount of content focused on the environment and sustainable living. One common post format is the "listicle" – 10 tips to minimize waste; eight ways to green your home; nine habits to live more sustainably. Use cloth shopping bags, check! Refill a water bottle, yes! Use a reusable coffee cup, of course. There are many lists and many ideas. In the spirit of the listicle, I decided to share nine items I no longer buy: 1. Garbage bags. I strive to make thoughtful choices and consume less, the result being a small amount of garbage. Instead of buying commercial garbage bags, I repurpose bags that directly or indirectly make it into my home like toilet paper packaging or bags from Farmer's Market salad greens. 2. Compost bags. The large kitchen scrap bin in my building is lined with a compostable bag. Instead of adding another bag, I refrigerate food scraps in a mixing bowl lined with newsprint. I add this batch of kitchen scraps to the bin the night before or the day of pick up. 3. Salad dressing, hummus, etc. Using basic pantry items along with fresh ingredients, I create dressings, dips and sauces without the additional plastic packaging. 4. New bottles of shampoo, conditioner and dish soap. I'd estimate the age of my shampoo and conditioner bottles to be in the double digits. They have been refilled countless times and the same goes for
dish soap. For travel, I reuse small bottles filled with my own supplies instead of using the ones provided by the hotel. 5. Liquid hand or body soap. It's good old-fashioned bar soap for me, preferably bought without packaging or at most, a paper wrap. (Liquid soap is available at refill stores.) 6. Fruit and veggies in plastic bags or containers. Admittedly not a 100% success rate but surely more than 95%. I appreciate that one of my neighbourhood grocers sells predominantly unpackaged fruits and vegetables, making this relatively easy. 7. Commercial cleaners. I never understood the concept of having a dozen different cleaners for a dozen specialized uses. Laundry soda and (refillable) dish soap excluded, I have two store-bought cleaners: laundry stain remover and Dr. Bronner's 18-in-1 castile soap. All other cleaners can be made at home with common household ingredients including white vinegar and baking soda. For clogged drains, I own both an auger and a Zip-It. 8. Plastic wrap, wax paper, parchment paper, etc. For food storage and transport I have a good mix of reusable containers, beeswax wraps and bowl covers. When it comes to cooking, I grease pans well, wipe out grease after use, soak immediately and scour with baking soda if needed. 9. Gift wrap. Wrapping paper, gift bags and cloth ribbons can all be reused. I also enjoy being creative with comic strips or handmade wrapping. Everyone's list will be different depending on factors including access, lifestyle and living arrangements. The goal is to do what we can and do what makes sense for us individually or as a household.

Working the land and sharing the harvest with others is an experience that for the Bickford family goes back to 1911, and today in 2022, a fifth generation carries on the farming tradition at the farm site off Wallace Drive. "I'm proud we're all family and doing this together," shares Jason Bickford. "I remember riding around the hay bales with my cousins on the farm ATV. I've always been on the farm, and I don't ever want to see it go." Jason's grandfather, Barry Bickford, was an enthusiastic Saanichton farmer who grew strawberries, cauliflower and hot house tomatoes. With a smile, Jason notes: "He was a true farmer." Like any proud grandparent who hears that his grandchildren are keen to begin a new venture that has been part of the family's history, Barry could hardly contain his enthusiasm. "When the kids started clearing out the land and planting, their grandpa got excited," says Doug, Jason's uncle. "He started to buy equipment like a corn planter and a fertilizer injector." The 50-acre property has been owned by the family for almost 50 years. Previously the site was a Christmas tree farm well known in the community. "We have always been in Saanichton. People know the Bickford name," comments Doug. "Years ago, they came for the Christmas trees." In 2019, trees were cleared and the land was prepared for new crops. In the first year, corn and pumpkins were planted. By the third year, sunflowers were added to the list. The current generation
of 11 grandchildren oversee six acres of crops and share the workload at the farm. "We all pitch in doing the planting, weeding, watering, harvesting and decorating," says Jason. This generation of growers at Bickford Farms not only dedicates their energy to the farming effort, but they do so while juggling fulltime jobs. For them, though, preserving the family farm traditions and contributing to the community is important. "Our farm is family-oriented," notes Jason. "We work together, and it's rewarding." Along the way, they are supported by others in the family too. "My role is to help out with things like watering or field preparation. We're supporting these young people getting into farming," says Doug. "They're all working full time." For the summer season, two acres of sunflowers are in full bloom by the end of August. In addition to selling them at the farm stand, Bickford Farms offered an entertaining way to appreciate these flowers. "We have a Sunflower Walk," shares Jason. "When the flowers are about a foot tall, we cut an interesting path through the field and put up decorations. You can walk through a field of yellow and immerse yourself in sunflowers." This past summer, visitors not only enjoyed the Sunflower Walk but also had fun with wooden photo boards along the way where they put their faces through the cut-out holes and posed for photographs. "It's great to see people come here," adds Jason. "They comment about how well put together the decorations are along the walk." The farm also typically grows an acre of corn, but heat waves in recent years have made growing corn more difficult for local farmers. "There are challenges in farming. We're trying to make sure everything is going to grow well," relates Jason. "During the heat wave, we managed to keep up with watering." It's a daily team effort all with the goal of offering fresh, quality produce. "The corn is picked every day," says Doug. "It's fresh, local produce." Also offered is a U-Pick pumpkin service whereby visitors can stroll through the field to find that perfect pumpkin. As well as the traditional orange variety, there are white and even black pumpkin species growing. "People can visit at the beginning of October. We'll be open dawn to dusk every day," comments Jason. Whether they come to pick pumpkins or wander through the sunflower field, many people are return customers. They enjoy the taste of farm fresh corn-on-cob or the fun of picking their own Halloween pumpkins. And, it's that farm experience they remember that prompts a return visit. In years gone by, this site was a familiar place for Christmas treehunting locals to visit prior to the festive season. Now they come out for some fresh produce or to enjoy the fresh air and family time. It is new crops and a new generation at the Bickford Farms, and it's still all about making memories. ArtSea Studio Tour Returns!
October 15 & 16, 2022 In one "fall swoop," the ArtSea Studio Tour returns! Thirty Saanich Peninsula artists are busy preparing their studios in anticipation of your visit on October 15 and 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. ArtSea is thrilled to present the in-person tour this year, which features many of your past favourites and some fantastic new participants as well. While most artists are hosting from their personal studios, artists from the Piers Island Gallery will be featuring their work at Russell Nursery, with others displaying at the Nell Horth Room (at the Sidney/North Saanich Library) and the McTavish Academy of Art. Art enthusiasts will encounter a wide variety of artwork in various mediums, from watercolours to acrylics, stained glass to porcelain pottery, and much more. The Studio Tour features a kaleidoscope of artistic styles and expressions from the hearts and minds of 30 local artists, all enjoyed in the warmth and comfort of cozy Saanich Peninsula studios. To assist in planning your tour, be sure to see the ArtSea Studio Tour guide map, available as a hard-copy brochure, as well as an online interactive format. Visit www.artsea.ca to access the online map, or to see a list of locations where you can find the printed brochure. Both the hardcopy and online versions provide images and information about the artists, their medium(s) and studio locations, making it easy to plan a route ahead of time – or spontaneously during your excursion. Studio Tour Committee Lead, Wendy Picken, suggests starting early with coffee or breakfast at Alexander's Coffee, The Fickle Fig, or The Deep Cove Market and "… taking both days to browse and talk to the artists about their techniques and creative inspiration."
On the Saanich Peninsula, artwork often showcases the beauty of the local environment, which visitors can enjoy during the journey between studios. In October, wineries are open for tastings, and farms spark delight with corn mazes and pumpkin patch adventures. Along the waterfront, explore the Sidney Seaside Sculpture Walk – a magnificent outdoor art gallery that leads to the ambient vibes of Sidney with small cafés and epic views of Mt. Baker and the Gulf Islands. The ArtSea Studio Tour is presented by ArtSea Community Arts Council. ArtSea is also proud to bring you the Salish Sea Lantern Festival, the Sidney Art Walk, and weekly artist-directed shows at the ArtSea Gallery in Tulista Park. ArtSea is a charitable organization that is proud to support and promote arts and culture in our community – come and join our amazing team of volunteers! More info at www.artsea.ca. THE GOLDEN YEARS by Sherrin Griffin VP, Operations, Sidney SeniorCare
The Change of Seasons Brings Safety Risks to Seniors As the cooler weather approaches, our thoughts turn to preparing our households for the winter months ahead. Whether your senior family member(s) lives in a house on their own or a condo/apartment suite, they may need our help to prepare for the change in seasons, and thinking ahead will go a long way towards ensuring their warmth, safety and ease of mobility. To start with, many seniors feel the cold more than their younger counterparts, often due to compromised circulation. It is very important, therefore, to make sure seniors have access to appropriate winter clothing including warm socks and additional layers for comfort; waterproof outdoor apparel as well as an appropriate coat for cold weather and even snow; shoes/boots with non-slip treads; insulated gloves and a cozy scarf. Colder temperatures, wet and slippery outdoor surfaces, power outages and indoor heating devices can all affect seniors' safety. Issues caused by inclement weather can negatively impact even the simplest tasks of daily living, or worse: result in an accident. Getting around may be more difficult for the elderly due to decreased visibility, mobility challenges and other safety risks caused by fewer daylight hours, heavy rain or snowfall and high winds. Seniors that live in a home with property will need outdoor walking areas and driveways cleared and salted to avoid slipping or falling.

For those living in a condo or apartment, you'll want to check on building maintenance protocols for outdoor common areas. In the last few years, Victoria has not only had significant snow, but snow that lasted for more than a few days so it makes good sense to prepare for that same possibility this year. As the change of seasons approaches, it is the perfect time to be proactive and explore all options for seniors who may be nervous driving, and/or walking, in the dark or during less than desirable weather conditions. These options could include grocery and medication delivery, and assistance from family members or a home support agency to help with driving to appointments or running errands. Power outages can be scary at any time of year, but with winter weather and less daylight hours they can be especially dangerous for more vulnerable seniors. Ensure that seniors have easily accessible safety supplies such as several heavy-duty flashlights, extra batteries and a charged mobile phone within easy reach, as regular land lines are not dependable. Since power outages can last indefinitely, make sure that the senior has enough food and medication on hand to last for several days. Another priority would be to ensure the senior's home environment is warm, safe and checked for fire hazards. Some seniors use heating pads and/or space heaters as additional sources of heat during colder weather; these devices must be checked for safety including frayed or faulty wires/cables, old outlets, etc. Remove or repair any items in question. Ensure that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are properly installed, checked and fresh batteries inserted. In addition, many seniors may be loath to turn up the thermostat due to additional hydro costs; offering to help with those extra expenses may help to alleviate their concerns. Communication with seniors at any time is paramount to their health, safety and well-being; however, it becomes even more important during risky weather. Make sure important phone numbers for family members, supportive neighbours, healthcare providers, grocery and medication delivery, etc. are posted in a convenient, highly visible place. Mobile phones, fully charged at all times as previously mentioned, are also critical. You may even want to consider a medical alert system for emergencies. As per the saying "it takes a village to raise a child," that same communal spirit, care and attention should be applied to our seniors. Ultimately, the more we build communities with seniors in mind, the stronger our communities will be.

Angela Miranda: Joy, History and Inspiration
It's not every day I get pooped on by a goat, but it was worth it because I got to meet someone who makes the world a better place! I met Angela Miranda, who hosted us on the Flavour Trails tour at Island Lavender (formal known as Victoria Lavender). Her contagious smile, vivacious personality and impossible-to-hide joie de vivre makes you want to lean in a little closer and learn more. From her Chilean heritage in the dictatorship days, to going to university as a mature student with three kids, to bringing to life a dream that she and her husband (Damian Kruz) had imagined for years, Angela's hard working, heart-centred approach to life makes her a bright light on the Peninsula.
You've been through many personal struggles; how has that affected how you go through life and relate to people? Losing my hearing has been a lifelong process. It first started developing at age 10 and continued until I was considered as having profound hearing loss around age 33. Because it was such a long and ongoing process, I think it gave me time to grieve the loss in intervals, having had lots of time to process it.The funny thing is, now I call it a blessing in disguise. I may have missed significant pieces of information in communication but I have a strong feeling I missed lots of negative or cruel comments as well, so the outcome has been that I believe people are good, kind, and everyone has something to bring to the table. Most importantly, never assume: it's best to ask what someone means first. You said that you and Damian went through a "mid-life crisis" at the same time; luckily your dream for change was also the same. Serendipity, fate or something happened to cause you to you stop halfway through your Masters program and go all in at the Island Lavender farm. Tell us about your dream and how it came to fruition. We did but for different reasons! Damian has done many challenging, creative business ventures. I longed for a lifestyle change that balanced physical activity and production. When Damian met Alan (founder of Victoria Lavender) seven years ago, Alan shared that he planned to one day retire and would need to sell the farm. It was the first time both Damian and I had the same dream. Fast forward to January 2021 – Damian and I were looking at properties on the Gulf Islands and I mentioned I still dreamed of the lavender farm. The next morning Alan
54 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | OCTOBER 2022
posted that he was ready to retire. It took a year to come up with an agreement, even to the point where we thought it was best to bow out. But Alan returned to us two months later and said we can still figure out a way to make this work. We now operate the farm and lavender production with a three-year purchase option.
FIT YOUR LIFESTYLE • ELEVATE YOUR EVERYDAY
You taught me a new word – Mapuche: People of the earth. What does that mean to you? Working on the farm has made me think about my history. We have four generations working here because although my grandmother is not alive, I feel her presence whenever I am working on the farm. Working on the land has encouraged me to reclaim a part of myself, a core deepset identity of where I come from and who I am. I feel her in my spirit, I feel her as a presence, and working on this land has pushed me to think about all the knowledge and care she possessed for plants, the earth and human health. When my mother (who I call the lavender doctor) looks over at me and jokingly says "Señora Juana" (her mom's name) as I lug a wheelbarrow with soil, there is no greater compliment that can fill my soul. If we take care of the earth, it can continue to take care of us. During harvesting season, Ukrainian refugees came to your aide creating a win-win. What was that like? We were so fortunate and honoured to have them help us! They all brought their vibrant energy and exceptional work ethics which helped the task of harvesting completely in only three days! I like to say they saved the lavender. When it was time to bundle the lavender, conversations came easily even though they just met. Working alongside each other at a long community table, bundling and hanging the lavender to dry, I watched as tears appeared in a few eyes. There were moments of quietness and a heaviness in the air that I cannot explain. Our time together has left lasting impacts on myself and the family as my husband is Ukrainian as well. Again, we continue to feel truly honoured cherishing our shared time together. What brings me joy now is that I've heard some of these lovely people have become close friends and continue to be in each other's lives after the work was completed. Some magic happened there. One belt away from being a black belt, you seem to have mastered the art of getting comfortable with the uncomfortable. Can you share some tips, encouragement or advice for others to do the same? I am going to steal the words my husband offered me when I returned to school as a mature student: "stay focused on your goal and ride the waves." It helped me so much that it unintentionally became my mantra until the unknown became known. What should we be watching for next with Angela Miranda? I hope to learn some new skills (flower print dying on fabric, lavender wands and wreath making, soap making) to share and offer workshops at the farm for people of different ages and exceptionalities. And our vision and wish is to continue building community and respectfully honour the traditional territories of the W̱SÁNEĆ people. You can follow Angela and Damian's lavender journey on Instagram @figuring_out_the_farm.

8 Reasons Thanksgiving Gratitude is Good for Your Health Many of us may be thinking about the potential negative effects the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday may have on our health, including overeating, weight gain, and a lot of stress. However, scientific research is starting to show the health-boosting effects of gratitude that can last longer than the turkey leftovers. Better Mental Health. People who pay regular attention to what they are grateful for have lower rates of depression, anxiety, and even showed improved symptoms of PTSD. Lower Stress. Stress is one of the biggest health risks – regular gratitude practice is shown to reduce stress hormone levels by 23%. Supported Immune System. Lower stress means your immune system is able to function more optimally. A Happier Life. Those with a regular gratitude practice tend to also have better relationships and a more positive outlook, and report higher overall satisfaction with life. Closer Relationships. One study showed increased levels of relationship satisfaction and happiness after partners showed gratitude to one another. Improved Physical Health. Grateful people are more likely to take care of their bodies, showing a higher tendency to eat well and exercise regularly, and be less likely to smoke or abuse alcohol. Better Sleep. People who wrote down a few things they were grateful for before bed tended to sleep better and longer. Better Able to Cope with Life's Challenges. Grateful people have improved mental resilience in coping with traumatic events, as well as greater patience and understanding for others. People who practise gratitude also tend to be more optimistic about their lives, and futures, which is a key piece in resilience.
Creating a daily gratitude practice can have benefits year round. Here are some ideas to get you started. Keep a Gratitude Journal. A popular way to practise gratitude is to start a journal devoted to the things you're grateful for. Start and End Your Day with Gratitude. Have the very first and last thoughts of your day be of gratitude. Think of five things you're grateful for upon waking to set the tone for the rest of your day. Before you go to sleep, think back through your day and find as many things to be grateful for as you can.
Write Thank You Notes. When someone does something for you that you appreciate, spend the time to write them a thank you note and spread the gratitude! Volunteer. Offering your time and energy towards a cause that is meaningful to you is a great way to practise gratitude. Don't worry about struggling to find things to add to your practice; you'll be surprised once you start just how many things to be grateful for there are! May you and your loved ones be blessed with many things to be grateful for this season.

SENĆOŦEN's survival by making language learning and W̱SÁNEĆ worldview resources more easily accessible for learners of all ages. The W̱SÁNEĆ values project consists of the development of resource kits containing full Creation Stories in SENĆOŦEN and illustrated posters that highlight W̱SÁNEĆ values. The stories, and their corresponding W̱SÁNEĆ values, were passed down over the generations by Elders. SX̱EDŦELISIYE (Renée Sampson), the SENĆOŦEN program facilitator at the W̱SÁNEĆ School Board, explains the importance of these projects, "It is the ĆELÁṈEN our birthright, our SENĆOŦEN language. We must pass it on to our children." In addition to work on the 13 Values project, NIȽ TU,O also funded the development of www.sencoten.org, a SENĆOŦEN language learning website which launched early this fall. The website alleviates the burden on language carriers by offering teaching resources such as SENĆOŦEN posters, audio and video clips. When the 13 W̱SÁNEĆ values project is completed, it will also be included on the site. Beyond being a community resource, SENĆOŦEN.org and the W̱SÁNEĆ values project both fulfill a larger purpose shared by NIȽ TU,O and the W̱SÁNEĆ School Board: to connect the younger generations with their ancestors, and ultimately preserve the language. "Capturing origin stories and the lessons taught in them go a long way to recovering a language that has almost been lost," shares LeslieAnn Paige, Coast Salish Initiatives for NIȽ TU,O. "We are thrilled to be a part of a project that will empower Coast Salish youth to learn
the language and worldview of the ancestors." These two language revitalization projects both further SX̱EDŦELISIYE's goal: to realize the dreams of the ancestors by ensuring that teachers and learners of all ages have accessible tools to learn the language, culture, worldview, and natural laws of W̱SÁNEĆ people.

The Hospital At The Heart Of Our Community
by Adrienne Dyer
As a longtime magazine journalist
and marketing writer, I'm lucky enough to tell fascinating stories for a living. But every once in a while, I get to work on a project with special meaning close to home. This summer, I had the chance to spend a day at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital, interviewing five doctors, one OR nurse and a local resident who is alive today because of the care she received in Emergency. Their stories are woven into the campaign materials for the Saanich Peninsula Hospital & Healthcare Foundation's annual fundraiser, which you'll likely come across in your mailbox, on social media and in local publications throughout this fall. That day at the Hospital changed me. The opportunity to speak on a personal level, with doctors and nurses and the person whose life they saved, was a special one for me. I am moved by hearing their stories first hand. I've never experienced such steadfast and selfless commitment to helping others. The medical team at SPF is extraordinary. Knowledgeable, extensively trained and experienced, yes. But it is their deep, personal attachment to our community that strikes me the most. There's so much I didn't know about our Hospital. For one thing, the Emergency is staffed, in part, by community physicians – one of the only hospitals on the Island that operates this way. The system provides exciting career opportunities for local physicians, and also allows them to follow their patients through primary and hospital care. But what I also realized is that a shortage of family doctors directly impacts the Hospital, which is why the Foundation's support is so vital. Their Doctor of the Day program
provides incentives to local doctors who also work in the hospital, which helps to recruit and retain new physicians to our community. I also had no idea how sophisticated our Hospital is. The new CT scanner, purchased by the Foundation thanks to generous donor support, is one of the best in the Province. The Emergency and Operating Rooms are impeccably organized, and, in the words of the doctors I interviewed, staffed with the best and most diversely skilled nurses you will find anywhere. The media is full of stories of burnout and stress within the healthcare system. I'm sure that staff at SPF have experienced their fair share of that too throughout the pandemic, especially since our hospital has treated record numbers of patients and conducted more surgeries than ever before, taking pressure off the bigger hospitals. And yet, by their own account, staff at SPF enjoy a high morale and camaraderie. Doctors and nurses feel supported; there's a feeling of closeness at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital that you never hear about on the news. At the heart of this, I learned, is the Foundation. Without it, our Hospital would have very likely closed decades ago. Instead, SPH is one of the most desirable hospitals in which to work. This is a place where doctors and nurses know they are backed by a community that gives generously to ensure they are equipped with everything they need to save lives and provide the best possible care. I'm so proud of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital and the Foundation, and grateful to live in a community where we take care of our medical professionals, who in turn, take such good care of us. effort to enhance ecological resilience and connectivity around the Salish Sea. Stretching from the southeast of Vancouver Island, across most of the Gulf Islands, and along a small sliver of the southern coast of mainland British Columbia, the CDF is a unique assemblage of some of the most biodiverse forests and associated habitats in the province, covering less than 1% of BC's land area. Unfortunately, due to ongoing development, limited protection policy and high proportions of private land ownership (roughly 80%), nearly every ecological community associated with the CDF is listed as threatened or endangered. KELÁ_EKE Kingfisher Forest is a rare opportunity to protect a large contiguous tract of CDF forests and associated habitats. Further, the Kingfisher Forest is home to animals such as otters, mink, Pacific tree frogs and over 100 bird species, including various sparrow, warbler and owl species. The distinctive rattling call of the forest's namesake, the belted kingfisher, echos throughout the forest as they forage for fish, amphibians and aquatic invertebrates along the

marine shoreline as well as in the freshwater aquatic habitat of neighbouring wetlands. That shoreline borders Plumper Sound, critical habitat for the remaining 75 Southern Resident killer whales that are federally listed as endangered. At this marineterrestrial interface, nutrients from the forest enrich the marine waters, while marine-derived nutrients are delivered to the forest by raven, kingfisher and otter, supporting the shallow soils in a cycle of reciprocity. Since launching this campaign, Raincoast and the Conservancy have made huge strides toward the permanent protection of KELÁ_EKE Kingfisher Forest with over $1.3 million raised so far. They have until the end of this year to raise the remaining $795,000. To help raise awareness about the campaign, the two organizations are hosting an EcoFair on Pender Islands from October 22 to 23, 2022 alongside grassroots groups PenderPOD and Pender Earth. WHY EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE A TAX-FREE SAVINGS ACCOUNT – THEY MAY EVEN BE BETTER THAN AN RRSP What is a Tax-Free Savings Account? The Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) is a powerful tool to help Canadians save, tax-free. Often times, the name of this account can be misleading as it is not simply a ‘savings’ account as you can also hold investments like stocks in a TFSA. Why hold investments in a TFSA? Your investments can grow tax-free and you will not pay any tax on capital gains, dividends, interest income or withdrawals (so long as the TFSA rules are followed). A TFSA can be an integral part of your financial plan regardless of your stage of investing. Whether you are saving for an upcoming expense or considering estate planning, a TFSA can be beneficial. Should you invest in a TFSA or an RRSP? TFSA contributions are not tax deductible, so they will not lead to a refund like you might receive with a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) contribution. On the other hand, you pay no tax when you withdraw funds from your TFSA. For personal advice, please contact: Jessica O’Brien Cameron, CIM, PFP Wealth Advisor, Portfolio Manager Wood Gundy 250 361-2272 jessica.obriencameron@cibc.com
The best case scenario is that you can afford to maximize savings in both an RRSP and a TFSA. However, the reality is that many Canadians simply don’t have enough cash available. So which account should take priority? The answer to this question is unique to every investor however, generally speaking, a TFSA will provide more after-tax income if your tax rate is lower when you make the contribution versus at the time of withdrawal. As always, it’s important for you to speak with your tax advisor about your particular situation.

Woodinville, Washington:
DISCOVERING NEW WINES& SOME CANADIAN ROOTS
The autumn is my favourite time for wine tasting: the summer tourists are gone, the harvest is in, the air is fresh, and the vineyards are starting to go golden. All the winemakers can take a deep breath, and that means when you visit in the autumn everyone has just a bit more time to hang out in the tasting room. Last month, we featured the ultra-local hands-on harvest. If you're hankering for a getaway a little further afield, but still here in "Cascadia," this month's highlight is Woodinville, in Washington State. Like British Columbia, Washington has hundreds of wineries, scattered over a large geographical area. But in Woodinville, uniquely, more than 130 wineries from all over the state have set up satellite tasting rooms just a half-hour north of Seattle. It's a wine lover's bonanza. And, for Vancouver Island wine and history aficionados, there are some great 68 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | OCTOBER 2022
Canadian connections – and Canadian winemakers – to explore. The wine industry in the Puget Sound, like the wine industry along the Salish Sea, has its roots in the trading posts set up by the Hudson Bay Company in the 1850s. The earliest cuttings here for Vitus Vinifera – the "noble" grape varietals native to Europe and used around the world in fine winemaking – came from the post at Fort Vancouver. You know, that "other" Vancouver, the one in Washington State, at the mouth of the Columbia River. But did you know that the founding "grandfather" of the Washington wine industry was a Canadian expat named William Bridgeman? Bridgeman, an Ontarian, came to see the Pacific and stayed to plant some of the region's earliest vineyards in Yakima, south of the Okanagan. He led the way in the varietal selections that
a century later have helped to make Washington State a world-class wine growing region, and he established one of the earliest wineries, opening Upland Winery in 1934, just after Prohibition. Upland no longer makes wines, but Bridgeman's vineyards continue to bear ultra-premium fruit, and the grapes from Upland Vineyard can be found in the wines of more than 20 different small wineries, many of which feature tasting rooms in Woodinville. To taste a bit of history and raise a glass to Bridgeman's legacy, stop by the Woodinville tasting rooms of DeLille Cellar, Brian Carter Cellars, Smasne Cellars, or Pomum Cellars. While most of these places are small, artisanal wineries, where the tasting room is an industrial hangar in the area's working-wineries zone, the Warehouse District, there are of course some grand estate vineyards that you won't want to miss. The oldest operating winery in the state is Chateau Ste. Michelle, and the estate built in 1912 by a Seattle lumber baron is Woodinville's answer to Victoria's iconic Craigdarroch Castle. Guide tours of the historical estate (wine tasting included) are offered daily. Or, if that sounds too sedate, check out their CRUSH Harvest Festival in mid-October, which includes a spirited (and wine-fueled) grape-stomping competition. The other "grand lady," of course, is Columbia Winery, established in 1962. Here, the acclaimed wines reflect the vision of two talented Canadian winemakers. The legendary late David Lake MW, a pioneer in Washington State winemaking, spent 27 years as the head winemaker and mentored a generation. In 2012 the torch passed to a second Canadian winemaker, Sean Hails, who got his start making wines in Ontario's Niagara region. For an in-depth exploration of Hail's wines try Columbia's excellent wine-education seminars, which naturally include tasting. Can't get away for a jaunt this autumn? Never fear. Wine is terroir in a bottle. You can always sample some of these wines at home on Vancouver Island. Washington State wines can be a bit tricky to source because of the arcane liquor laws in our province, but a number of local independent wine stores have great lists and knowledgeable staff. DeLille Cellars wines are among those stocked by Vintage Spirits in Victoria (www.hotelrialto. ca/retail/vintage-spirits), and the folks at Metro Liquor in Brentwood Bay (www.metroliquor.com/locations/brentwood-bay), a Peninsula hidden gem for wine lovers who haven't discovered it yet, are happy to special order any Washington State wines currently available in Canada. Gail Hazlehurst:
INSPIRED BY THE SEA & SHORE
Waves. The gentle surge of the surf against the shore. Putting a sea shell to your ear, you can hear the sound of the ocean. One local sculptor, who once made the islands of Hawaii her home, creates pieces which, like that seashell, are powerfully evocative of the sea. "I lived on Oahu for 50 years," shares Gail Hazlehurst. "My art is inspired by a lifetime of beautiful ocean images." Gail was born in San Francisco and moved to the Hawaiian Islands when she was a teenager. She attended the University of Hawaii where she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis on pottery, an activity for which she immediately developed an affinity. "In drawing classes, I learned about perspective. But drawing is only two dimensional," she says. "I discovered I really enjoyed working with clay. It's three dimensional. It's more tangible and has more mass and space. I really liked that!" While in Hawaii, Gail began to create art that reflected the tropical sea and shore around her, a theme she still enthusiastically pursues today. She exhibited and sold her art and served as Gallery Director at the gallery for Hawaii Pacific University. As well, Gail began to share her skills and knowledge with others, both adult and children. She taught at 72 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | OCTOBER 2022
the Contemporary Museum in Honolulu, at private and public schools in Oahu, as well as with home schoolers. "Through clay hand building, children experience the joy of relaxation and learn problem solving from creative thinking," remarks Gail. Gail's creations are diverse, including sculptures designed to hang on walls, shaped coral head formations, and tall cylindrical pieces. She uses the slab, pinch and coil methods of clay hand building to create clay sculptures which showcase the colours, tones and textures of the tropical ocean and seashore. "I love coral formations," enthuses Gail. "Each sculpture is based on an image that is not scientifically exact. It's an abstraction of the image in my mind, reminiscent of the coral reef." Her sculptures are all incredibly intricate and this requires detailed planning in each piece's creation. First, she rolls the clay out and cuts shapes from it. Gail then textures these shapes using stamps. Everything is hand assembled and always with a specific plan in mind. "I usually form the base and the sides, then cut out abstract forms and attach them to the rim," says Gail. "I have a basic architectural formula that is strong enough to hold the top portion." The length of time to complete each piece can greatly vary. "It's the drying time that is long. It's important to take time so as not to crack or warp the clay," adds Gail. "It can take two weeks for some, and up to one month for a large piece."
Sculpting clay is an art form that not only takes patience and skill, but also requires strength. "I roll out large slabs of clay. It is a weighty material. It takes upper body strength," shares Gail. "You must keep it moist or it cracks or crumbles. I have a water bottle and continually spray the material, then cover it in plastic." Since moving to Sidney in 2015, Gail has been involved with the Saanich Peninsula Arts Council, ArtSea, and South Vancouver Island Potters Guild. She has also taught parent-child and children's clay hand building classes at Greenglade Communty Centre. After over 30 years of teaching the craft, however, Gail is now spending some solo time creating in the studio. "Now I am retired, and I focus on the joy of sculpting," she says. "I spend two afternoons a week at Greenglade pottery studio. I do an art exhibit once a year at the ArtSea Gallery; it is a year's work that I show and sell." Whether it has been teaching others or working on her own, Gail recognizes that art provides challenge and reward. "Creative expression is very joyful and has given me life balance; creative thinking in art is very important and very rewarding." For those of you who would like to try your hand at clay sculpting, Gail has some useful advice. "Find a pottery studio and take a beginner's class!" she says, warmly adding: "Don't be too hard on yourself; enjoy the joy of the process and where it leads you!"
For Gail, while the end result is rewarding, it's the process of getting there that provides the greatest satisfaction. "I love touching the clay. The feel of clay is cool to the touch," Gail says. "Working with clay is a meditative flow. It is joyful." Reflecting the beauty of the ocean has been the artistic current surging through this artist's life. Even now, as she continues to mould the clay in her hands, the creative horizon, like an ocean, is limitless.

September Book Club
Check out some of our new and best selling titles!
by Deborah Rogers
Book Club
A world of extreme wealth and inflexible social rules was the setting of our September read. In her historical fiction The Social Graces, Renée Rosen explores the "Gilded Age" in a New York awash with money, and the developing conflict between the "Knickerbockers" with their family wealth, and the new money of the railroad and business tycoons. The social conflict was demonstrated through two central characters, Caroline Astor and Alva Vanderbilt. The publisher helpfully included a large family tree for both the Astors and the Vanderbilts helping the reader navigate the family dynamics presented in the story. It was a time period and setting that few of our members had much knowledge of and we appreciated the depth of research that the author clearly undertook. The descriptions of exquisite dresses, extravagant balls and elaborate architecture sent many of us off on our own research missions looking up photos of the people and places described. It truly was a world of excess, and Rosen's detailed descriptions created a very strong backdrop for the story. Over the three decades that the book spans, starting in 1876, we see a changing world. Our discussion focused on the restrictive roles that women were limited to, and how inegalitarian New York society was. While the men were Empire-building, their wives and daughters were entirely excluded from the decision making. Despite all the glamour and glitz the lives of the women in the book were tedious. We discussed whether the author's very detailed and repetitive descriptions were a way of demonstrating that tedium to the reader. The flaw we found with this book was that the characters were so unlikable. They all exhibited behaviour that was petty and childish, and their preoccupation with social status and excluding others from entering their world, made them entirely unsympathetic. We were disappointed that the big social movements of the time were largely absent from the narrative, presenting a curiously flat version of the past. However, reading the book created an opportunity for reflection on the way we continue to equate money and success, and our own modern versions of this desire for exclusivity such as the Hollywood "A-list" with their Met Balls, private jets and bejewelled outfits. For our meeting next month we are reading Iona Iverson's Rules for Commuting by Clare Pooley. Join us on October 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sidney/North Saanich Library. Grateful for Community When it comes to emotional health and well-being, it is impossible to overstate the importance of community and having a good support network – it can make all the difference in the world. Dr. Loren Braun and Dr. Jacalyn Sollid, the husband and wife owners of Sidney Centre Family Dentistry, experience this firsthand in their dental office every day. "Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and with almost every industry experiencing a staff shortage, I want to thank my staff for all the hard work they do for both me and my patients," says Jaci. "My name may be on the door, but our dental office is truly a team effort, and without them, doing my job would be impossible." Jaci says most of the staff have been with them for 10 to 15 years, and they are an amazing group of people. "We love our team and try to create a work environment that they love and enjoy, so they never want to leave – we want them to come to work, and be a little office family!" Studies show that a positive and encouraging work environment can make you more engaged, more supportive, and better at working together. This is the kind of workplace that Jaci and Loren strive to create for their office family. Here, Loren explains how each of the wonderful staff members have their own role in making the office a positive place to work.
Receptionists: Liz and Tina These two wonderful women have been running our front end together for over 11 years. They work so well together, and do an amazing job of keeping my days full. They also work their magic with the schedule, always able to accommodate emergencies that call in, and squeezing in appointments for people in pain. Patients love to see their familiar faces at the desk, and rarely a day goes by that people do not comment on how great they are. I know they are fantastic, and I am extremely fortunate to have them on my team.

will step in, and I am able to keep working without skipping a beat. I appreciate that their primary concern is always patient comfort and well-being. They will routinely get an extra pillow to support someone's neck, take the extra time to answer questions and explain the steps of procedures so that people are aware of what to expect, or stay with a patient after a procedure until they are comfortable and ready to leave. Karen and Ashley have been working together for over 13 years. Meagan joined our team four years ago, and Amanda W. just recently started to cover Meagan's upcoming maternity leave. However, I hope to keep her on our team even after Meagan returns, as she is one of the best new graduates I have seen, and she gets along fabulously with the rest of the staff.

Hygienists: Amanda, Katja, Dallas, Teresa, and Trina We are very lucky to have such a great group of hygienists. Although they have joined us at different times over the years, with Amanda starting in 2006 and Trina joining us last year, they all are fabulous at what they do. Never have I seen a group of hygienists who are as thorough as they are, but who also genuinely care deeply about patient comfort and well-being. Patients have nothing but great things to say about their cleanings, and almost always ask to rebook with the same hygienist as they have enjoyed the care they have received. I am so thankful for the wonderful staff I have been blessed with. They all get along well with each other, and make the office an enjoyable place to work. More importantly, they make it a comfortable and relaxing environment for our patients. Each of our staff are vital to our office, and I am thankful for their presence in it!

A Thoroughly Modern Wheelchair Accessible Cottage If you fall off a rain-slicked roof while putting up your Christmas lights or crash during that last glorious powder run on the slopes you may be laid up for awhile … . Daily living while you rehab will be just that much easier if you already live in a wheelchair-adapted home. Along the quiet treed roads of North Saanich, there can be found the newly built Ravenwood Cottage, a modern, industrial-themed cottage that is wheelchair accessible. Although only 990 square feet, the one-level cottage feels very bright and spacious due to the 12-foot-high vaulted ceilings, skylights and huge south-facing windows. The cottage is nestled amongst towering trees and clad in vertical black metal siding. It features a large, covered entry and a bright sunshine-yellow door. Emma, who meticulously designed the cottage, and her husband Hans, a retired ice-hockey coach, are currently renting Ravenwood for a minimum of 30-day stays via Airbnb. But one day, they may move in themselves. Why did they build their cottage this way? "We wanted to prove that it is, in fact, possible to create a wheelchair accessible home that doesn't look any different than any other home," said Emma. "Accessibility is something that people should really think about when building new or renovating."
This cottage is for all seasons – you can sit outside and enjoy the sunny southfacing patio for most of the year, or relax in front of the fireplace. It has a spacious ground-level entry, wide doorways and coat hooks and storage at varying heights that can be easily reached from a wheelchair. The concrete floor makes movement effortless, doesn't scratch, is resistant to water and stains, and easy to clean. Because the floor is heated, there is no need for any other heat source besides the fireplace. All the windows are triple glazed. Original art accents the industrial vibe, and bright colours in the living room area add to the super fun look, especially the bright orange couch, green high-backed chair and contrasting throw pillows. The area rug is also alive with warm colours. Floating white storage cabinets make the room more spacious by providing extra turning space for wheelchair footrests.

The funky electric fireplace wall is made of reclaimed tongue-and-groove fir boards from the attic walls in their main house. Hans was throwing the painted boards out the window onto the lawn, and Emma decided to keep them for the fireplace. For the corner trim, she stored rebar outside in the elements to create a rusty look and then finished the rods with clear varathane. The teal walls and tall, white-trimmed windows to either side of the fireplace add to its attractive look. Emma refinished the round pine dining room table and mounted it on a pedestal so there are no legs to get in the way of a wheelchair. Around the table are three framed black chairs (each one is different) that Emma bought from various places, painted and reupholstered. Above the table and in the kitchen, lighting is provided by pot lights and industrial-looking glass pendant lights with Edison bulbs hanging from the high vaulted ceiling. "Lighting is such a great way to put in a little bit of extra bling or accent whatever theme or vision you have," said Emma. "Pot lights are great, but they're kind of boring."

The shiny clean, minimalist-looking, light-filled kitchen has custom-made walnut-grained laminate cabinets that add more wood warmth to the space because texture was added to them. "D" shape handles were chosen because they are easier to open than knobs. Lots of drawers and two lazy Susan cabinets help with accessibility. Under the cooktop, the bottom cabinet can be removed so wheelchair 82 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | OCTOBER 2022
footrests can go right underneath, allowing the user to move in close. The backsplash features beautiful Italian tiles of varying ocean shades of green, blue, grey and beige. Appliances include a ceramic cooktop, Bosch dishwasher, bottom-freezer refrigerator, and microwave. The wall oven opens to the side rather than down in front, making removing hot food much easier and safer. Another point in its favour is that the oven can be mounted at whatever height suits you best. The kitchen sink is shallow, so it is easier to reach items on the bottom. Shiny white quartz counters, a large peninsula with counter stools and expansive, nature-filled windows complete this very functional and attractive kitchen. The larger bedroom has a queen bed, while the second has a single daybed and desk. Storage areas have been planned to the maximum in every room throughout the cottage. Steps away are the two bathrooms. The sleek-looking main bathroom includes a tub, separate roll-in shower, washer and dryer. The toilet is wall-mounted with the tank encased in the wall. This setup helps to make water cleanups a snap in the bathroom. For added convenience, there is a second powder room with a toilet and space-saving sink and cabinet.

There are several things to consider in making a wheelchair accessible bathroom, such as the placement and height of shelves, the sink, mirror and grab bars. Door swing, space and width, wheelchair turning space and toilet seat height all have minimum requirements. There must be sufficient clearance under the wash basin and all exposed lower plumbing pipes need to be insulated to prevent leg burns. Emma's passion for this topic has led her to create a helpful website to provide information on designing a wheelchair accessible home. (www.missmdesign.ca). She has prepared articles on many topics, such as Top Design Tips for an Accessible Bathroom and Basic Rules on Building an Accessible Home. She writes: "By incorporating accessible design, you will create a FABulous home: Flexible to accommodate all your current and future needs/ Accessible to you, your friends and your family, no matter what their ages or abilities/Beautiful and very enjoyable to live in." If you are interested in making your home and community wheelchair accessible, a great resource is the illustrated Building Accessibility Handbook 2020 published by the BC Building and Safety Standards Branch. In it can be found building code requirements, explanatory text, and suggestions on how many of the requirements can be implemented. The handbook says: "These requirements should be considered as the floor, not the ceiling, for accessibility efforts."

SCREEN SCENE by Tabatha Golat
THE SANDMAN: AN ENTERTAINING RIDE The constant deluge of superhero comics turned action films can get a bit tiresome, so when The Sandman popped up on my Netflix queue I was hesitant to delve into "just another comic book show." Thankfully, I gave the show a chance and was pleasantly surprised by the 10-episode production. I recommend watching with an open mind as it's quite a stunning comic book adaptation. The Sandman is a fantasy-drama based on the DC comics written by Neil Gaiman. The series came to fruition after years of failed development attempts, beginning in 1991 when it was originally pitched as a feature film, and went through many iterations until its final development in 2021 via DC Films and Warner Brother Television. The show stays true to its comic book roots without oversimplifying the characters or plot. For those familiar with Greco-Roman mythology, you will be delighted by the reference to Morpheus – the God of Sleep and Dreams – on whom the series is based. The show begins with narration from Morpheus who speaks of his realm, the Dreaming, and his duties to humans as the Lord of the Dreaming. Morpheus is captured when a wealthy aristocrat is performing an occult ritual in 1916, an event that wreaks havoc on the human world and their ability to sleep. Many are left in dream-like comas, while others cannot fall asleep at all. Morpheus is held captive for over 100 years until he finally escapes and sets out to restore the damage done to his realm. Subsequent episodes follow Morpheus as he struggles to regain his power and rebuild his world. Each episode of The Sandman is fairly distinct, yet flows seamlessly through the fictional universe. With references to famous historical figures, fairytales, biblical entities, mythological creatures and the human world, it was no easy feat to adapt the comic to screen; however, the creators have done a fantastic job of building the magical world. Tom Sturridge stars as Morpheus – an intriguing portrayal of the ethereal dream king. I must warn viewers: the first episode moves quite slowly as it builds the plot, but hang in there as the story moves forward quickly after episode two and is worth your patience. There are moments where the CGI can be jarring but if you're willing to look past these faults you are in for an entertaining ride. Looking for other fantasy series to watch? Check out my recommendations below. 1) Lord of The Rings, The Rings of Power 2) House of the Dragon 3) Wheel of Time 4) Sweet Tooth

Peninsula Panthers CHAMPIONS!
The Peninsula Panthers Organization kicked the 2022/23 Regular Season door wide open on September 9th with a convincing 6-3 win over the Westshore Wolves in front of a large crowd and a post-season atmosphere. And the following evening the Team travelled to Campbell River - always a tough barn to get a road win - and squeaked out a 3-2 victory on the strength of a last-minute marker on the power play from the stick of last year’s VIJHL Rookie of the Year Payton Braun. With the tag of returning League Champions after the dramatic overtime win last April 1 against the Oceanside Generals, the team will get the best version of the opponent every single night. Matthew Seale will take over as the Captain this season from Riley Braun who has aged out. Seale was the VIJHL Top Defenceman last season and has all the leadership traits any Club would cherish. Joining him in the leadership group and wearing a letter for the Cats are Tanner Banks, Payton Braun and Evan Crawford. The Club shipped out goaltender Ashton Lukan back to finish his Junior Career in his hometown of Edmonton, Alberta and have brought in a familiar face to join returning stopper Brady Kelly to help out between the pipes. There is no exaggeration in the term “Familiar face.” The other half of the Panthers goaltending tandem is identical twin brother Mason who played last season in Junior A in Michigan. The two have both had sizzling starts to the Defence - 2002 Forward - 2005 season and Management feel they might have the top pair in the VIJHL. The Club is also thrilled with the group of youngsters they have recruited, three of which are home grown right here on the Peninsula with the Peninsula Minor Hockey Association. Malcolm Fletcher played last season with PMHA U-18, Luka Jansen van Rensburg and Cameron Sneek with the South Island Royals Organization. Evan Birks is another skillful kid out of the same program and Seth Fryer is a young skater with huge potential who joins his brother Reid in his 3rd year with the Club. Spencer Cotie is flash and dash coming out of the Victoria Admirals U-18 Tier 1 program and Ethan Warnes and Zach Warren played on the Kelowna Provincial Championship U-18 Tier 1 Team. Warren and Warnes are both attending the University of Victoria and the Panthers were fortunate to land the pair of forwards early in the Spring. The Organization feels as though they Forward - 2005 Forward - 2006 are in a position to repeat another run to the title and a berth in April in the Provincials in Revelstoke.

Deborah Rogers Moving to Canada brought a few new traditions into my life, including Thanksgiving. Over the years I've asked many colleagues, acquaintances and friends about their traditions, trying to understand what was at the heart of this October holiday, and how my family could start to create our own ways of celebrating. Some of the customs were easy to pick up – yes please, pumpkin and pecan pie; some needed tweaking – let's substitute Tofurkey for that traditional bird; and some were very hard to enact – how to have a tableful of extended family when they are all 7,000 kilometres away? What we have been very happy, and yes, grateful, to adopt is the way that this holiday doesn't rely on purchasing power or frantic preparations. We love to share a meal together, enjoy the seasonal produce, and remind each other of all the many things we have to be thankful for, not least of which is making Canada, and its traditions, our home. Thanksgiving this year will be particularly special. At the end of September I became a Canadian! Yes, I’m official now, having completed the citizenship process with an online ceremony and oath swearing. It’s been 15 years since we emigrated here and fall always makes me think about our first months of adjustment. We couldn’t quite believe the scale of everything: the trees and mountains; the dark night skies; the first big storm that blew through, throwing driftwood up onto the beaches. Everything seemed super-sized! It’s an especially beautiful time of year on the Saanich Peninsula and this year’s late summer is an added bonus. There’s still time to enjoy the outdoors and all the bounty from our local farms. We also get to anticipate crisp fall mornings, dew on the grass and pulling out our favourite boots and sweaters. It’s a great time of year to be grateful! I hope you all enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday, however you chose to spend it.

After growing up in a small farming town, I recently moved to the area to be closer to my family, and I’m looking forward to being able to call such a wonderful community my home. I am happy to join the team at Seaside, and eagerly anticipate getting to know the people and businesses of the Saanich Peninsula through the magazine. In my spare time I love hiking with my dachsund Chili, and I’m excited to explore some of the local beaches and trails!

SIDNEY All Care Residence Our Family Taking Care of Your Family
Meet One of Our Residents: MJ Hall When MJ graduated from the University of Toronto, she decided to take a passenger freighter to England. It took eight days to cross the Atlantic, and when she arrived, she knew she wanted to work in Journalism. MJ held court with Sir Roy Thompson on Fleet Street, who was then a Chancellor in Canada and living in England. She worked various freelance jobs for three years, some due to her bilingual French. She then moved back to Canada and got a research job in Canada’s largest firm: Maclaren Publishing/Coca Cola. MJ shares that she kept asking questions, learning, meeting more people and putting herself out there, which got her noticed: she made her way from Manager of Marketing Research to Director to VP and then Senior VP. At the time, the company had no real branding but MJ had heard of it when she was in England. She suggested that the company needed to brand itself and was called upon to attend conferences and talks. There she kept seeing a very goodlooking man named Robin, who was at that time the President of Bristol Meyers. It was a very large account and her company was trying to land the marketing acquisition. There came a time when a recruiter called her and asked if she would meet with the President for VP of Marketing position at Bristol Meyers. She met Robin and got the job within five minutes! The rest, MJ says, was not “history” but what ensued were Friday lunches, dinners and eventually love and marriage; 40 wonderful years of marriage to the love of her life. She shares that when Robin got sick and passed away, she carried on as one would, and freelanced until she was 70. Last year, as her health declined, she and her good friend found us, and she shares that it was the best move at the right time.
