Preservation In the Age of development

he history of Victoria can be heard, seen and smelled all through the downtown area. The aroma of freshly brewed tea and coffee flows down Government Street from Murchies, which was built in 1894. At the Empress Hotel, built in 1908, see servers bustle about with trays filled with cucumber sandwiches and hear the clanging of tea cups being cleared. While the culture of Victoria has changed over time, the relics of an age of wealth, opulence and women in long dresses still exist today. Regardless of the idea of making a separate image for Victoria, not one of British rule, the buildings and images from the days of British dominance are imperative for the survival of Victoria as a tourist destination and thriving city. As Victoria must embrace its past, so too must the Saanich Peninsula. In the past 10 years, the number of hotels, condominiums and tourist attractions Sidney offers has grown. Alongside this growth, the volunteers at the Sidney Museum and Archives have

Society, Heritage Acres and the Saanich Pioneer Society have helped preserve the identity of a community whose condominiums and other developments make it vulnerable to change.
worked hard to preserve the history and culture of both Sidney and the Saanich Peninsula. Sidney was an industrial town that consisted of canneries, sawmills and marine-based industries. Sidney still has a small industrial sector, but the size has dropped drastically.
The Agricultural Society holds the Saanich Fair every September so that everyone can enjoy the rich agricultural history of the Saanich Peninsula. The documents, families, societies and events are all part of a collaborative effort to protect the agricultural identity of the Saanich Peninsula.
Even though the town of Sidney is changing from industrial to a modern, middle class environment, the Sidney Museum and Archives and their associates are consistently preserving the images of Sidney: for example, the historic photographs on the side of Shoppers Drug Mart that depict the town in the 1910s and 1920s.
Today’s world is fast-paced and technologically driven, but with the help of everyone in Sidney and on the Saanich Peninsula, we can keep the history of these areas alive and well.
The Saanich Peninsula is an agricultural-based society, and has been since the mid 1800s. From the founding families like the Thomsons, Michells, Sluggetts and Johns, agriculture has dominated this area for more than a century. Documentation of land purchases, photographs of pioneer families, and organizations such as the Sidney Museum and Archives, Saanich Agricultural
