This week’s issue is about photography. Let’s face it: it’s ambitious of us to try and encapsulate the essence of this great art in just 30 pages. Every SEAS issue is about photography. Most of the pages we create are permeated in photos, whether they depict beautiful sceneries or inspiring people. Have you ever noticed how you can try to remember a written sentence hundreds of times, but unless you connect the writing to an image in your head, you will never remember it quite as easily. That’s what photography is. It’s a way us humans capture memories, in a couple million pixels on a screen or a picture on a wall, in order to have physical proof that yes, we have been there and have done that. Because a picture is worth a thousand words. Photography is something that transcends our own lives and lingers on in the memories of those still to come. And that is what we’re aiming to do here at SEAS.

Jaspes artsy way of life influences how others see her, embracing what she loves and giving this message to everyone she meets. For Jaspe it is about accepting who you are, whether it is through your clothes or personality. Her awareness of fashion has made her more adventurous to new styles, experiencing new worlds, but also being aware of other individuals that through their charm and attitude embrace the clothes they are wearing, rather than having the clothes over throw the personality that lies beneath them.

What is your passion? Why do you like photography? Since I was little I had a fascination for people who knew how to express themselves making people understand their emotions. Photography and fashion in that sense are my way of expressing myself. Nowadays I prefer digital photography over analog because it gives you more room to create and manipulate the image. What inspires you most in your photography? The people themselves, because I tend to see people a certain way, the whole process is basically to capture that, and hopefully show an unexpected side. Sometimes it’s an emotion or a certain attitude. Who is your favourite photographer? Tell us about her? I’m generally fascinated by photographers who manage to elevate their work to a form of art. I like Annie Leibovitz, because she has a way of adding a certain epicness to photographs that are expressive and emotional, all while celebrating fashion in her own way. JASPE AZABE HABARUREMA 16

The Art Of Selfies

We are a world obsessed with selfies, or should we say a university obsessed with self-IEs. Find out what truly makes a good selfie?Explore what your fellow students have to say about the art of their selfie skills. We all know that whether you are a gentleman or a lady, striking a pose or looking fierce in a selfie will always get you’re selfie game started. Be it those selfies with a signature frown, pierced lips, duck face or open laugh. Though as stylish as selfies can be, as miserable they might turn out. We all know that one selfie will never make the cut, its the 20 other pictures that serve as a selection. And if the perfect angle, light and selfie face wont work for you that day, then let’s be honest the black and white filter will always bring your selfie game back on point. But, why all the judgement towards selfies? We all take them and love them. Since they pretty much are based on self-obsession and roam the fields of every Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr page nowadays, you might as well embrace the culture?! So don’t be modest your already taking a picture of yourself.

Tell me about yourself? I think I really depends on who is looking at my personality, but if it were up to me I would say I am a maniac and freakishly OCD and in order about everything, but then on the other hand I’m also oddly enough calm and less worried about many things. So I am very relaxed person, I like anything that involves a creative process, and still see a lot of interest in the less creative things. What passions do you follow? I’d say I follow a lot of passions and at the same time I don’t. I have to be fare to the fact that I would pick up a lot of things and then stop them for a year, maybe two, but then pick them up later and then they become my passions. But I would say photography, film and cinematography have been the passions I have cultivated the most in the past years. I used to be really passionate about skateboarding and other extreme sports, like snow sports, but over the years I have had less time to practice them, but I am still interested in them. And then on the other side, on the more book, intellectual and brainy level, I like design, listening to music and have a passion for reading in general. When did you get interested in filming? I got interested in filming around middle school. I went to a middle school in front of this skate park, and I had been skating for a long time, but it gave me the chance to really go there everyday. I made a lot of friends in the process and no one really had a camera or was filming us. I had a camera before and I used to take pictures, but I remember really wanting to film us. I ended up taking a 100 dollar camcorder they used to sell, attached a fisheye lens, and added a few other things and in the end I created the sketchiest camera that kept falling apart, but I think that was when I really started to get into filming. So I basically didn’t really create my passion out of movies, but rather the video montage part. 23

PHOTOGRAPHY: ALESSANDRO FABBRINI What inspires you? The thing that inspires me most is driving alone on the freeway listening to music and getting lost. I’d say most of the time when I’m alone, especially in the presence of music, I always think of visuals that could relate to things and get really good ideas that are very scattered but have nothing to do with each other. In that respect it’s a very frustrating way to be inspired, because there is a lot of inspiration, but none of it makes sense a lot of the time and it’s hard to act on it. So sometimes I feel more inspired then what I transform it into reality, but its part of it. What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on? Until now I think I’ve worked on a lot of project, between summer jobs and things I’ve done on my own or for university, I think one of the coolest projects, in terms of all the aspects that it had that were interesting to me, was this remake from the ‘Thriller’ Music Video from Michael Jackson, that we did two summers ago. And then a couple of months ago I was allowed to film with a Drone for a university project with a friend of mine, which was also interesting. Who would you like to work with? I admire a lot of people in the film industry- The people that I most admire are the ones that have done a lot of projects all over the base such as commercial, noncommercial, independent, music, film, photography and in that sense I would say Tom Ford, and James Franco, but aesthetically Wes Anderson. 24

What’s your next project? Right now we are working on a kitchen show ‘Kitchin’ichin’ which is a project for University. We are basically looking at people’s personalities through food, and at the same time we are relating that to a new media platform that we have presented, which integrates recipes and all sort of other applications, but my main concern is filming both people and food at the same time. What’s your ideal goal in life? In the respect of filming I don’t know what my goal is, but I think the best way I can be specific is, that when I wanted to go to film school before I came to study communications I had a very different idea of what I wanted to do with film in my life. It was something more about wanting to make it into a career. Now I have shifted my perspective on it and I think of it more as a tool that can be implemented as away of exploration in a lot more fields than film per say such as for entertainment purposes. In that sense I am excited to leave options open and see where it goes. STEFAN FIOR AGE 19

John P. Barbac

What lifestyle do you pursue? Today my main focus is on finishing up university, however, much of my time is spent on music related things. DJing is a great part of my current life but at the end of the day it’s only a hobby to me. What I really want to do is continue growing my family business in Mexico. I will be part of the sixth generation in my family to take part in it, and I plan to do everything in my power to keep it on the trajectory that it has been going. I don’t think I will ever stop mixing, but it will always be treated as a hobby. 30

chano https://soundcloud.com/jpbp

What is your artist name? For now its just ‘JP’, but I’m still working on finding a better one. I would use just my actual name, but I think its a bit too complicated for an artistic name. People already have trouble pronouncing my last name on a regular basis. What is your style/genre of music? I like all types of electronic music, but what I really like is Tech House and Techno; some Deep House as well. 31

What does it mean to be a DJ nowadays? I’ve been mixing since 2010, so you could say that amongst people my age, I was one of the first ones to start. Today, there are so many DJs, all you really need is a laptop and a cheap controller - anyone can do the basics with a little practice. Because of this reason it has become quite popular, and even though the cheaply priced equipment is a good way for people to start mixing, there are many people who just do it to attract attention and want to be called DJs. A more advanced example of this is a ‘professional club DJ’ that mixes whatever the club tells them to mix, and really has no originality - they just play the hits. I could never be like that, I will always stick to my style. The moment someone starts to control the music that I have to play I will no longer do it; I would rather mix by myself in my room. I think that every real DJ is like this, all of the other ones aren’t really artists; they’re more like puppets. So, to answer your question being just a DJ isn’t really that great nowadays, you have to prove to the people that you produce something special to really be noticed. JOHN P. BARBACHANO AGE 19 32
