PHOTOGRAPHY: ALESSANDRO FABBRINI Tell us about yourself?Being a dual Iranian and German citizen, I was exposed to two very different cultures at a very young age. Throughout my childhood, I have lived in a multitude of different countries having to adapt to local customs. I believe that has made me a more open minded and adaptable person. Tell us about your business journey? Once I visited the old empty industry production of my grandpa. He showed me around. And we stumbled upon some tools from the sixties, amongst some other things we found remains of very thick industrial leather. The smell and the feeling of the leather fascinated my senses. I then saw my iPhone and produced the first case out of the old leather that was far too thick. That’s when I really started to try and find suitable leather for my idea. In the beginning I actually produced the first systematic cases in our cellar at home. When I started to realize that some of my family friends were very interested and asked to buy cases, I understood that it could become something potentially big in the near future Because the cases are made out of vegetable tanned leather, they slide into the highest ecological standard of leather manufacturing. After I sold the first cases the demand grew rapidly making me have to outsource the production, which was a big step. I began with a local leather manufacturer in Berlin, and now I have my production in Kanpur, India. Overcoming this step meant meeting lots of different standards and administrative issues. In 2012 I was then able to fully register K-Leather as my firm. And which was more rewarding: making your startup a success, or being able to continue keeping it successful? Starting it up and making it a success right from the beginning on was more rewarding for me. Everything was new and had to be set in place. At my young age, being in contact with lawyers, international producers and clients was challenging, but of course also rewarding. However, right now it is most important to grow the business in order to remain competitive. 11

How did you distinguish yourself from your competitors? Besides selling the core product, I offer a great service. Most of my products are mainly sold to companies and institutions. They have the different choices to individualize their cases, which range from a logo, to special colors of the leather or threat. Being flexible is key to distinguish myself from other competitors.

I used the approach of “learning by doing”, I think the next time I’ll use the same approach and combine that with a bit more analysis. How do you conquer those moments of doubt what pushes you through? A beer with friends always helps. You will then talk about the difficulties and get external inputs.

What has your greatest success been so far? If you could have given yourself a piece of knowledge or advice when you started what I am satisfied with what I have achieved in would that be? my life. Tell us about yourself Normality bores me so I suppose you could say I have a crazy kooky personality. I’m really interested and passionate about things that are different and unique, the sort of things that are so powerful that they inspire you to think or feel a certain way which is what I relate to my everyday life and probably why at 20 I still think everyday should be costume day. How did you create your business? I started my first venture when I was 18, which was running solely off of eBay and it was for vintage fur items. When I was 19 I started up my second venture, which was also running through eBay,gumtree and Facebook, but it was no longer to do solely with vintage fur items, instead I expanded to selling bandage dresses. Now at 20, I want to take it all a step further and open my first formal fashion and accessories vintage shop in Segovia, which is very exciting but also intimidating. How did you become interested in vintage? I fell in love with vintage whilst at boarding school and my frequent rummage through the local second hand charity shops for things that are unique and different. But I always found that there was a struggle to find an affordable price for the vintage clothes that I fell in love with, especially on a student allowance. I loved the experience of a good find and often my friends would borrow a piece of mine that I thought was a good steal but rarely would they be willing to do the hard labour of actually searching for a steal simply because there is a common perception of vintage stores being moldy and sweaty ( which unfortunately, many do have that feel to them). So with my store I really want to change the face of vintage, make the shopping a whimsical experience. It should be that you can buy an item that is unique and beautifully packaged at Chanel/Prada standard but for the price of something from Zara/Pull and Bear. Opening my first shop in Segovia is to a certain extent a leap of faith, but I think you need to try things out in order to know whether you fail at it or not. I think I have certainly failed more times, than I have succeeded, but personally I think that’s what makes success so much better when it happens. My format of the shop will be a combination of a shop and a lounge where everyone can shop but also exchange creative and artistic ideas about fashion and vintage clothes whilst having a tea or cupcake. In a sense my concept for my shop is centered around my personality, so there will be a mixture of everything a bit wacky to find in the shop. 22

Why the fashion industry? For me personally, fashion has always been a way of bringing out my different characters. I say this because I think most people are multi faceted but they tend to dress in solely one style because they think that is necessary to conform. Often we are left without the opportunity to truly express ourselves and in turn are left having trouble to properly show who we are unless we create our own opportunity. In my opinion, if people were presented with a platform to dress the way they felt the happiest, I doubt most people would dress the way they do now. I think that most of the time we try to conform to an ideal and dress in the most standard way to impress people, if everyone were to wear their core personalities outwardly, I think our visual environments would be a far more interesting place. What are your future plans? In the near future I would say my plans are to successfully open a store in Segovia. If I am successful I would like to expand it to Madrid and other major cities. I want to create a different perspective/approach towards vintage fashion, to have my shops next to big brand name shops on the high streets of the worlds fashion capitals. 25

PHOTOGRAPHY: ALESSANDRO FABBRINI In the very first edition of the PANGEA conference in Madrid two weeks ago, SEAS magazine managed to get a sneak peek of some of the inspirational stories behind the speakers present at the global networking event. PANGEA It makes us proud to say that the entire event was organized by IE students and now has started on its road to future success. PANGEA in essence is a meeting point of talented youths from all around the world. Among brilliant hackers, survivors of the 2004 tsunami, the youngest CEO in the world, one of the speakers caught our eye. Alyssa Carson, 13 years old from Baton Rouge (Louisiana), seemed a little out of place in a space full of people at least 5 years older than her. In no time at all, we discovered that she is one of the few people that will probably go to Mars in 2033. At that point, we just couldn’t stop asking questions to what was one of the sweetest and brightest little girls we’ve ever met. How was your experience in the NASA Camps? I went to all three NASA space camps in the world. The one in Huntsville (Alabama) was the biggest one. You can learn a lot in there: space history, commercial space flight, there’s a bunch of realistic simulators, and I even got to build and launch rockets and play the role of an astronaut in deep space. The age requirement for the camp is 9 to 99. 100 is the limit, but 99 is still ok. The one in Canada was smaller, but still really cool. The one in Izmir (Turkey) is more about creating friendships with kids from all over the world. Were you recruited? Was it your choice? When I was younger I would watch a lot fo TV, and if there were characters that would explore space or, say, go to Mars, I thought “maybe there are people can go there too!” At 3, I asked my dad about space and he told me everything he knew about it, which wasn’t a whole lot but it was something. So that’s how my passion started. 26

Do you know what Mars is like? I’m working on a 1000 piece map of Mars and right now we joined the color pieces but the pace is slowing down because all that’s left is the black of space so it’s really tough now. Anyway, when I was 5 I used to study the map of Mars all the time. At that time the Pathfinder rover landed on the planet, so I thought that maybe if a robot can do it, humans could too. How would you communicate with your family and friends from Mars? You can communicate for sure, but the only problem is that there is a 10 to 15 minute delay because of the distance. If I say hi, 15 minutes later they’ll receive the message. It would be a very delayed conversation. You’d have to get it all out in one video message, record it and then send it. How many people are they planning to send to the red planet? 6 to 12. You have to have replacements, so everyone must be good at doing everything in the spaceship. How long will the NASA mission be? 2 to 3 years in total.

Would you still go if it was a non-return trip? Yes. It’s a good idea to start colonizing mars and moving on to a new planet.

What do your parents think about it? My dad is a single parent and he’s very supportive. We do everything together. There’s a chance that I will go and never come back, so that’s the reason we do everything together. It’s In a sense, we can compare this to only been 13 years but it feels like 40 what Christopher Columbus did back because I’ve always been with him. in 1492 when he discovered America, right? PHOTOGRAPHY: ALESSANDRO FABBRINI Where are you from? Hopefully this won´t confuse anyone! I was born and raised in the United States and then later moved to Egypt, but my origins are Belgian and Egyptian. What is your style/genre of music? I am very mixed in my music preferences! I love Opera and classical music, but I also enjoy listening to Hip hop and R&B music. My friends often call it ratchet music, I blame my upbringing in the US. What was your most amazing experience in terms of performing in front of an audience? I have 2 experiences that come to mind. The first experience was when I was 14 and still living in the States. I was in a very competitive choir called the Fairfax Choral Society in Virginia. We had been among those chosen to do a special performance in Carnegie Hall, which was one of my dream venues in New York City. The catch, was that they were only going to accept 7 people out of the 150 people in my choir. Thankfully I was one of those accepted to attend. The experience of performing in such a grandiose hall will forever be engraved in my mind. Imagine singing in front of over 2,800 people on one of the most prestigious stages in the world, let´s just say I was extremely nervous. The second experience that comes to mind is from when I was 17. In December of 2012 I had my first solo debut at the Cairo Opera House. It wasn´t the first time for me to perform at the Cairo Opera House, but it was the first time for me to have my own concert, for which I had to prepare a full 2 hour repertoire. To make matters even more stressful, the director of the Opera House was going to attend as well as 3 Egyptian reporters and TV stations. The preparation for this concert took me 6 months, and on the day of this performance I was so nervous that I had to meditate for 3 hours prior to opening the curtain. However, all those fears dissolved the minute I went out on stage and started singing. When I am on stage I feel free to be who I really am, the adrenaline rush that goes through my body makes me feel invincible, as corny as it sounds, which is why this particular performance felt like the debut of me, being me. 32

What does it mean to be an opera/singer nowadays? There is often a misconception about famous opera singers being fat and old, but that is so not true. In this day and age some of the most famous opera singers are elegant, gorgeous women with built in amplifiers, which make their voices seem unreal. To be an opera singer in this generation it is even more important to practice as much as possible, because it is an extremely competitive field of work. In order to perform an opera aria you need to be able to adopt the persona of the character who is singing. One could think of it as a louder and more intense version of a Broadway musical. 34
