2009-10 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEASON PREVIEW

A

fter two straight NCAA Division II Final Fours and the program’s first Great Northwest Athletic Conference title last year, the Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball team is unlikely to sneak up on any of its opponents in 2009-10. A slight favorite – according to the league’s preseason coaches’ poll – to retain the GNAC title that they shared last year with Seattle Pacific, the Seawolves return three starters and two major bench contributors from last season’s 31-4 club. So while three-time GNAC Player of the Year Rebecca Kielpinski is gone in the middle, there is plentiful evidence that twotime GNAC Coach of the Year Tim Moser (84-15, 3 seasons) has restocked with enough talent to garner continued national respect. Leading the way will be those two mainstays of last year’s playoff run – senior guards Tamar Gruwell and Kiki Taylor. The team’s third-leading scorer (7.0 ppg), Gruwell canned 51 three-pointers at a .383 clip as a junior. In the NCAA Tournament, the California native was at her best, averaging 8.6 points, shooting .529 from long range, and earning a spot on the West Regional All-Tournament Team. Meanwhile, Taylor was one of only two Seawolves to start all 35 games, averaging 6.2 points and team-highs of 2.6 assists and 2.0 steals per game. She also earned the team’s ‘best defensive player’ honor for a UAA crew that led the nation in opponent field-goal percentage (.318) and ranked 2nd in scoring defense (49.1 ppg). At the wing position, Moser returns a pair of players who can score from anywhere on the floor with junior Nikki Aden and senior Nicci Miller. A part-time starter as a sophomore, Aden is the only player on the 2009-10 roster to contribute to both Final Four squads. The Oregonian averaged 4.5 points and 2.3 rebounds a year ago, improving as the season progressed and making huge contributions in NCAA Tournament wins over 10th-ranked UC San Diego and Clayton State. Miller returns healthy and motivated after suffering a concussion in mid-February that cut her season short after 24 games, including 17 starts. The team’s leading scorer (10.5 ppg) and second-leading rebounder (5.5) is an explosive offensive force and an aggressive rebounder. Three more returners grace the Seawolf front court, led by sophomore Hanna Johansson, who paced the team with a .554 field-goal percentage as a rookie. The 6-2 Swede was UAA’s second-leading rebound-

er (5.0) and third-leading scorer (6.7) in NCAA Tournament play. Another European import, 6-4 German native Viki Wohlers will repeat her sophomore season after being granted a redshirt from her freshman season at Oregon State. Moser calls Wohlers a terrific post defender who could see increased minutes. Senior Brittany Collins, who plays larger than her 5-11 listing, brings leadership after appearing in 20 games as a junior. In addition, Moser will draw a wealth of experience from five returning redshirts. Mesa State transfer Kelsie Gourdin is the only ‘Lower-48er’ among the group, and the Colorado native brings strong credentials after earning First Team All-RMAC West Division honors as a sophomore in 2007-08, averaging 13.0 ppg and 6.4 rpg.

Senior Leah Stepovich (Fairbanks/ Monroe Catholic HS) and junior Sarah Herrin (Nikiski HS) are familiar names to both Alaska high school basketball fans (combining for three Class 3A Player of the Year awards) and GNAC fans alike. Stepovich played as a junior at former league rival Seattle in 2007-08, averaging 4.7 points and ranking fourth in the GNAC with a .408 three-point percentage. Herrin, meanwhile, averaged 6.0 points and 4.6 rebounds as a sophomore at rival Alaska Fairbanks two years ago. Two more lifelong Alaskans, Kodiak’s Alysa Horn and East Anchorage’s Jordan Martin, hope to make a splash as redshirt freshmen, along with JC transfers Kaitlin McBride and Torle Nenbee, and true freshman Brooke Larsen.

Head Coach

TIM MOSER

I

n just three seasons as head coach at Alaska Anchorage, Tim Moser has left a lasting impression on the UAA faithful and elevated the Seawolf program among the elite in NCAA Division II women’s basketball. After guiding UAA to its first-ever Final Four appearance in 2007-08, Moser repeated that feat in ’08-09, pushing his impressive 3-year mark at UAA to 84-15. Last year’s squad won 31 games — a record for all UAA sports for the second straight year — and captured its third consecutive Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout title. The Seawolves also made it a ‘three-peat’ for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference’s Player-of-the-Year and Newcomer-of-the-Year awards, while Moser was voted the league’s Coach of the Year for the second time in three years. Moser also received the 2009 WBCA Div. II West Region Coach-of-the-Year honor as UAA captured a share of its first conference title in 20 years. During Moser’s tenure, the Seawolves hold a 51-1 home record and are 6-0 against D-I opponents in the regular season. As a D-II rookie coach in 2006-07, Moser was voted GNAC Coach of the Year after leading the Seawolves to the then-second-best record in program history (23-6), including the team’s first NCAA Tournament victory in seven seasons. UAA recorded the 8th-biggest turnaround in D-II from 2005-06 to ’06-07. Moser’s UAA teams have developed a reputation for defense as well, leading the nation in opponent field-goal percentage (.318) and allowing the second-fewest points per game (49.1) in 2008-09. A former Seawolf player, Moser returned to UAA in April 2006 from Otero (Colo.) Junior College, where he won 74 percent of his games and captured nine conference coach-of-the-year awards, leading both the women’s and men’s teams. He coached the OJC men exclusively the final two seasons, after leading the men and women simultane-

ously the previous six years. In six seasons with the Lady Rattlers, Moser compiled a 137-41 record and won five straight conference championships from 1998-02. With the men, he registered a 172-68 mark, winning four league titles. Moser’s student-athletes at OJC compiled an even more incredible record of success in the classroom, with the men ranking among the nation’s top five teams in terms of gradepoint average for five straight years, and the women holding a top-10 academic rank for six years in a row. During Moser’s 14 combined seasons as head coach, the Rattlers produced 15 Academic All-Americans, 52 Academic All-Region performers, and all but one player graduated from the 2-year school. Moser is the eighth head coach in UAA women’s history.

Under Moser’s leadership, the Seawolves have won three straight Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootouts and posted a 9-3 record in NCAA Tournament play.

THE GREAT NORTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE/SEAWOLF FACILITIES

S

tretching from Alaska to Oregon to Montana – and soon Canada – the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has quickly established itself as one of the most successful league in the NCAA Division II ranks. Founded in 2001 as a 10-team league, the GNAC currently features nine institutions – Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Fairbanks, Central Washington, Montana State Billings, Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin’s, Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and Western Washington. And the 2010-11 campaign will begin a new era as the league

goes back to 10 teams with the addition of Simon Fraser University of Burnaby, British Columbia. In the last two years alone, the GNAC has produced one national team title (SPU women’s soccer, 2009), three national runner-up finishes, and three NCAA Final 4 placings (all by the Seawolf basketball teams). UAA sponsors seven of the GNAC’s 14 sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

Seawolf basketball players also make use

of the WFSC’s other facilities — weight room, fitness center, 25-meter pool, jogging track and sauna — for training and recreation. At Thanksgiving, the Seawolves move their home Photo by Klas Stolpe to the 8,700-seat Sullivan Arena in Midtown Anchorage, where they host the annual Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout.

CARRS/SAFEWAY GREAT ALASKA SHOOTOUT & DIV. I VICTORIES

UAA hosts one of college basketball’s most prestigious tournaments every Thanksgiving week when it brings Division I squads north for the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. SEAWOLF GIANT KILLERS

Beginning with a 74-52 victory over Nevada in 1980, the Seawolves have a strong tradition of success against the giants of NCAA Division I basketball. UAA has a total of 31 wins over 28 programs, including such powers as Clemson, Wake Forest and Santa Clara. After beating Syracuse to win their third straight Shootout title, the Seawolves have a current six-game win streak against D-I foes, matching their largest margin of victory in a 72-44 win over Cal State Northridge in 2008.

UAA’s Kiki Taylor prepares to make a critical steal from Syracuse’s Chandrea Jones late in UAA’s 58-57 victory in 2008.

DR. STEVE COBB

Director of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage

In nine seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways. The 2007-08 and 2008-09 campaigns were two of the most memorable in school history, highlighted by three Final Four appearances for Seawolf basketball teams (women twice, men once), and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s skiing, and men’s track & field. With UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, a planning phase is also under way for the construction of a new on-campus sports facility at UAA. He has also recently overseen several upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of the new gym floor and the construction of the new All-American/Academic All-American honors wall. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Classic hockey and Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State. Dr. Cobb and his wife Sandra reside in East Anchorage.

ACADEMICS The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 students through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the University’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addic tion Studies, the Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a minimum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.

SEAWOLF ATHLETICS

Nicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as members of NCAA Division I in men’s ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, and women’s cross country. UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic and the Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournament. Since joining the NCAA ranks in 1977, UAA has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 137 Seawolves have earned All-America honors, and UAA has produced 14 individual national champions since 1991. The Seawolves are coming off perhaps the most successful year in program history in 2008-09, boasting a second straight NCAA Semifinals appearances for women’s basketball, plus the top NCAA finishes ever for skiing, men’s track & field, and both women’s and men’s cross country. UAA also captured league titles in women’s basketball and men’s cross country as well as its first-ever Mountain Pacific Sports Federation gymnastics crown. Seawolves student-athletes have enjoyed unprecedented success in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 12 of the last 15 years.

ith city boudaries that stretch to nearly the size of the state of Delaware, more than 275,000 people are lucky to call Anchorage home. On a global scale, Anchorage is located as far north as Helsinki, Finland, and as far west as Honolulu, Hawaii. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city (more than four times larger than the second-largest town), an international air crossroads, and the business and cultural center of the state. Almost 300 flights arrive daily at Anchorage International Airport. Anchorage is a recreational paradise as well, boasting more than 14,000 acres of parkland and nearly 300 miles of paved and wilderness biking, skiing and hiking trails. In addition, the city sports dozens of

lakes, softball, baseball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, and six scenic golf courses. Chugach State Park is located 15 minutes from downtown Anchorage. With 495,000 acres, Chugach is the third-largest state park in the United States and offers a variety of year-round recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, camping, cross country skiing and wildlife viewing. Due to the warming effects of the Pacific Ocean currents and protection from the Chugach Mountains, Anchorage is located in Alaska’s so-called banana belt. Anchorage’s climate resembles that of San Francisco in the summer (highs of 75 degrees) and a Rocky Mountain ski resort in the winter (lows of 20

laska is the largest state in the union — one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second largest state, Texas. Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes,, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than three million lakes. Alaska has 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage. The 49th State celerated is home to Mt. McKinley, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Mt. degrees). Low humidity also contributes to Anchorage’s comfortable climate. The residents of the city share the Anchorage bowl with more than 1,000 Moose, which are often seen on UAA’s campus throughout the year. In addition, black bears, grizzliess, foxes, wolves, lynx, wolverines, Dall sheep and bald eagles are just some of the animals that make their homes here. Salmon fishing is more than a pastime to Anchorage residents. Red and King Salmon can be caught from the many rivers and creeks that run through the city.
