2009 Seawolf Corporate Partnership 2008-09 In Review The 2008-09 campaign was highlighted by NCAA finishes for more than half of UAA’s teams, plus conference titles in women’s basketball, gymnastics and men’s cross country. UAA student-athletes also continued a tradition of success in the classroom by earning a combined 3.15 grade point average in calendar year 2008.

Men's Basketball The Seawolves overcame an 0-5 start to finish with the program’s fourth straight winning record at 1514, while going a solid 9-7 (5th place) in GNAC play. UAA prevailed in several big contests, including a road win over eventual GNAC champ Western Washington, home wins over playoff-bound Seattle Pacific and CenSenior Jeremiah tral Washington, Trueman received and a Carrs/ GNAC Honorable Safeway Great Mention honors. The team got major contributions from its two seniors, as guard Kenny Barker was the only unanimous choice on the All-GNAC squad, and center Jeremiah Trueman was the lone player in NCAA Div. II to rank in the nation’s top 25 in both field-goal and freethrow percentage.

Women's Basketball The Seawolf women made more history, posting the best record (31-4) in school history and advancing to the NCAA Div. II Semifinals for the second year in a row. After tying with Seattle Pacific for the GNAC title, UAA beat the Falcons on their home court to win the West Regional title, then knocked off Clayton State in the Elite Eight round in San Antonio. The Seawolves finished No. 3 in the final WBCA top 25 poll after achieving the first-ever No. 1 ranking in program history earlier in the season. Among their many accomplishments, the women put together a 22game winning streak and won the Carrs/ Safeway Great Alaska Shootout for the third year in a row. Senior center Rebecca Kielpinski was an All-American and the GNAC Player of the Year for the third time, while senior guard Jackie Thiel was the GNAC coNewcomer of the Year.

In 1993, the University of Alaska Anchorage hockey program became a full-fledged member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Begun in 1952, the WCHA has established itself as the premier collegiate hockey conference in the country. With the addition of Minnesota State University, Mankato in 1999-2000, the league membership is now at 10 teams. The WCHA leads the nation in national champions, NCAA Championship winning percentage and NCAA Frozen Four appearances (92). The WCHA perennially leads the nation in college hockey attendance and has attracted more than one million fans each of the last ten years – becoming the first collegiate hockey conference to do so. This past season, WCHA teams attracted 1,428,028 fans. On the ice, the WCHA has produced more National Hockey League players (more than 300) and Olympians than any other conference. That list includes the likes of Chris Chelios, Ed Belfour, Tony Esposito, Brett Hull, Mike Richter, Matt Carle, Curtis Joseph, Tomas Vanek, Glenn Anderson, Jordan Leopold, Jonathan Toews, Zach Parise and UAA’s own Curtis Glencross. League teams compete in some of the finest arenas in all of college hockey, including Minnesota’s Mariucci Arena, North Dakota’s Englestad Arena, Wisconsin’s Kohl Center, Colorado College’s World Arena, Denver’s Magness Arena and UAA’s own Sullivan Arena. The annual conference playoff championship, now known as the WCHA Final Five, continues to be one of the most successful postseason college tournaments of its kind.

The local schools may also get involved with providing supplemental practice sites, as well as the Thanksgiving Dinner program.

In 2008-09 UAA Athletics supported this nonprofit program which has provided literacy instruction to adult learners and their families for 33 years.
