2009 Kendall Hockey Classic Preview
One of the premier early-season tourna-
Here’s a brief look at the 2009 field: ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES Coming off its best season under head coach Dave Shyiak in 2008-09, Alaska Anchorage returns to its own tournament looking for a sixth Classic title. UAA packs a roster full of seniors and juniors who possess the skill and experience to lead the Seawolves to victory. UAA returns to the Sullivan Arena with 71 percent of its point production from last season, suiting up seven of its top 10 scorers. Senior Kevin Clark, junior Tommy Grant and senior Josh Lunden will lead the Seawolf pack offensively. The threesome finished 2-3-4 on the team in points, registering 31, 25 and 20, respectively. The Seawolves’ defensive end will be led by senior Trevor Hunt and sophomore Curtis Leinweber, who each contributed 12 points from the blueline. Time in the crease for UAA could be split between senior Jon Olthuis and junior Bryce Christianson. ALASKA FAIRBANKS NANOOKS Alaska Fairbanks, which joined UAA in the Classic last season for the first time since 1985 and 1986, will aim to defend its first Classic title with second-year head coach Dallas Ferguson at helm. In his initial season, Ferguson led UAF to its first winning season since 2004-05 and a program-tying fourth-place finish in the CCHA, earning him the league’s Coach of the Year award. The Nanooks will hit the ice this season with senior Dion Knelsen taking the reins after leading UAF in points (10-12—22) last

year. Juniors Kevin Petovello and Brandon Knelsen could post high figures after chipping in 18 and 14 points, respectively, last season. On the defensive end, UAF will look to a pair of sophomores, Joe Sova and Aaron Gens, to keep the puck in the zone. Both blueliners tallied 10 points apiece during the 2008-09 campaign. Replacing 2008-09 Hobey Baker finalist Chad Johnson at the goaltending position will be the greatest obstacle for UAF to overcome as returnee Scott Greenham only saw action in five games last season. MICHIGAN WOLVERINES Attempting to win its second Classic tournament title is one of the CCHA’s powerhouses, Michigan. The Wolverines, who
are making their first trip to Anchorage since 2000, look to challenge for both a league title and NCAA berth in 2009-10 after making their 19th consecutive trip to the NCAAs last year—a college hockey record. The Wolverines return 19 skaters from their squad that went 29-12-0 a year ago. Longtime head coach Red Berenson (26th season) will lead seven of his top 10 scorers from last year, including 68.5 percent of the Wolverines’ point production. Among the leaders is a Hobey Baker finalist and an American Hockey Coaches Association West All-America first-team selection, junior Louie Caporusso (24-25—49), and junior Carl Hagelin (13-18—31). Shoring up the defensive side of the ice for Michigan is senior captain Chris Summers. Last season Summers registered 13 helpers and 17 points, leading all Wolverines defensemen. The Maize and Blue held opponents to 2.05 goals a game – fourth in the country. Between the pipes is junior Bryan Hogan, who was third in the country in winning percentage (.800) with a record of 24-6-0. MERCYHURST LAKERS Making its inaugural appearance at the Kendal Hockey Classic is Mercyhurst. After finishing third in the Atlantic Hockey league last season, the Lakers return with 21 letterwinners, including eight of the top 10 point producers. Mercyhurst led the conference in power-play percentage (24.3) and scoring offense (4.18 goals per game). Juniors Steve Cameron and Scott Pitt will lead a veteran squad with five incoming freshmen. Cameron topped the team with 22 goals and 50 points, while Pitt was the Lakers second-leading scorer with 15 goals and 30 assists. Sophomore Phil Ginand (1519—34) led the league for freshman scorers and tallied a team-high 10 power play goals. The Lakers’ defense will be spearheaded by the return of senior Matt Fenelle, who has put up 14-38—52 career totals in 99 games. Fenelle will be joined by senior Cullen Eddy (1-14—15) on the blueline. In net for Mercyhurst will be junior Ryan Zapolski. Zapolski suited up for the Green and Blue in 29 games, producing an 18-5-3 record and a .934 save-percentage – leading the conference.

ments in the country, the Kendall Hockey Classic once again will showcase some of the most successful programs in college hockey. The 19th edition of the tournament promises to be one of the most exciting yet, as UAA looks to dethrone in-state rival and defending champion Alaska Fairbank. Joining the field for the second time is Central College Hockey Associations powerhouse Michigan and first-time participant Mercyhurst of Atlantic Hockey. For the first four years after its rebirth in 1999, the tournament champion was based on overall win-loss record. The 2003 and 2004 Classics changed to a true tournament format, with the winners of the opening contests meeting in the championship game. The format switched back to overall winloss record in 2007, which continues this year.

Classic History
S
2009 Kendall Hockey Classic
tarted as an eight-team tournament in January 1984, the Kendall Hockey Classic has grown into one of the premier preseason college hockey tournaments in the nation. Initially known as the First Interstate Classic, the tourney’s format would switch to the current four-team field in 1986. The Classic was discontinued in 1993 when the Seawolves joined the WCHA, but was reborn in 1999 when the WCHA reduced its league schedule to 28 games. From 1986-92 and 1999-2000, the tournament was known as the Nissan/Jeep or Johnson Nissan Classic. The tourney was named the Nye Frontier Classic from 2001-07. Kendall begins its title sponsorship in 2008. Host Alaska Anchorage has won the Classic five times, claiming its third title in four years in 2006 after claiming back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2003. The Seawolves also posted tournament championships in 1990 and 1988. Seawolf players have hoisted the Classic’s Most Outstanding Player trophy on six occasions (Josh Lunden, 2007; Shea Hamilton, 2004; Dallas Steward, 2003; Mike Scott, 2001 and Seawolf Hall-of-Famer Paul Krake,1988 and 1990). UAA has an overall record of 18-13-7 in 18 Classic tournaments and has played for the championship nine times.
UAA’s Paul Krake is the only player in the 15-year history of the Nye Frontier Classic to earn multiple Most Outstanding Player Awards, claiming the honors in 1988 and 1990. The Seawolves won the Classic title in both of those seasons.
UAA’s Mike Scott (1999-02) earned Most Outstanding Player honors in 2001, marking the first time in tournament history the MOP was awarded to a player on a nonchampionship team.
North Dakota goalie Jon Casey earned the very first Classic Most Outstanding Player Award after leading the Fighting Sioux to the inaugural tournament title over UAA in 1984. Casey would go on to have a successful NHL career, including helping lead the Minnesota North Stars to the 1991 Stanley Cup Finals. Former Colorado College standout Peter Sejna was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2002 Classic after leading the Tigers to the tournament title. Sejna went on to claim the Hobey Baker Memorial Award that same season.

Classic History
CLASSIC ALL-TIME
The Classic and the Frozen Four
In 17 previous tournaments, seven teams that have played in the Classic have advanced to the Frozen Four that same season. The 2000-01 Classic field featured two teams that went on to the Frozen Four (Michigan and Michigan State). On two occasions the defending NCAA Champion participated in the Classic (Northern Michigan, 1991-92; Boston College, 2001-02).
Determining a Champion
All tied games will have a shootout immediately following the end of the overtime period. The games will be officially recorded as a tie. The shootout result will only count toward breaking potential ties to determine the Classic champion. Regular shootout rules apply, with each team getting five shots from five different players on the goaltender. If still tied, then a sudden-death shootout with take place. FORMULA FOR DETERMINING NYE FRONTIER CLASSIC CHAMPION
1. Win-Loss-Tie record If still tied, the following tie-breakers, in order, will be used: A. Win-Loss record inclusive of shootout results B. Head-to-head results C. Goal differential (GS-GA=GD) D. Fewest goals allowed E. Shootout differential (GS-GA=GD) If still tied, co-champions will be declared.
Alaska Anchorage’s Josh Lunden was selected to the All-Tournament team in 2008 after claiming the Classic’s Most Outstanding Player award in 2007.

Dr. Steve Cobb
Director of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage
In nine seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic
department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways. The 2007-08 and 2008-09 campaigns were two of the most memorable in school history, highlighted by three Final Four appearances for Seawolf basketball teams (women twice, men once), and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s skiing, and men’s track & field. With UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, a planning phase is also under way for the construction of a new on-campus sports facility at UAA. He has also recently overseen several upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of the new gym floor and the construction of the new All-American/Academic All-American honors wall. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Classic hockey and Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State. Dr. Cobb and his wife Sandra reside in East Anchorage.

2009 INDUCTEES
PAUL CREWS & JIM HAJDUKOVICH Paul Crews, the bedrock of UAA’s ski pro-
A
t 6-2 and 190 pounds, Jim Hajdukovich [1995-99] didn’t play every position on the basketball court, but to look at his collegiate statistics, it certainly seems that he did. Following a standout prep career at Fairbanks’ Monroe Catholic High School and a redshirt season at Division I Fresno State, the gritty guard quickly earned a reputation as a fan favorite at UAA, scoring a freshman-record 288 points in 199596. Four years later, he would leave with a school-record 1,472 points as well as the top career marks in assists (371), steals (192) and three-pointers made (238). Hajdukovich went on to become the first 4-year letterwinner at UAA to score double digits in all of his seasons, and 10 years later he still holds top-10 career ranks in steals (1st), assists (2nd), three-pointers made (2nd, 238), points (4th), blocks (4th, 78) and rebounds (7th, 526). As a sophomore in 1996-97, he entered the starting lineup early in the year and helped the Seawolves to an outright Pacific West Conference title and the first of back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. Averaging better than 15 points his last two years, Hajdukovich regularly put up monster stat nights - a triple-double (25 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists) against Seattle Pacific; 21 points, 10 rebounds and four steals in a Shootout overtime win against Notre Dame; 30 points in a postseason-clinching victory over Western New Mexico - and earned all-league, all-region and team MVP awards. After graduating with a degree in economics, he was honored permanently by the men’s basketball program when the team’s ‘Iron Man’ award was renamed the Jim Hajdukovich Trophy, presented to the player who best displays physical toughness, endurance and court awareness. Today Hajdukovich is the president of Frontier Flying and a vice president for Era Aviation as well as an active member of several community organizations, including the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce and the non-profit Challenge Life. He and his wife, former Seawolf player Michelle Titus Hajdukovich, are the parents of three children Jahnna, James and Marek.

gram for two decades, and Jim Hajdukovich, one of the most prolific men’s basketball players in school history, will comprise the Seawolf Hall of Fame’s Class of 2009. The induction ceremony will take place Sunday, Oct. 11, at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. For two decades, Paul Crews [19822001] was the bedrock of an Alaska Anchorage program that has been one of the most consistent winners in collegiate skiing. Following a collegiate career at Western State, he earned a spot on the World Cup downhill tour in 1971-72, becoming the first Alaskan to qualify for the U.S. Ski Team. Crews rejoined the national team as a coach in 1980, and two years later he returned home to join the Seawolves as an Alpine assistant to fellow Seawolf Hall-of-Famer Tom Besh. The 1990 season would be the first of Crews’ 11 seasons as head coach, with the team never placing worse than 10th at NCAAs. In 1991, the Seawolves produced the first of five national champions under his watch when Stig Matsson claimed the 20K classical title. Izidor Jerman became the first UAA Alpiner to earn a national title with a slalom win in 1997 - one of three Seawolves to win individual crowns that year. Crews’ team skied to a school-record fifth-place finish at the 1993 NCAA Championships and equaled that feat in 1997 and 1998. Individually, 48 Seawolves claimed All-America honors under his tutelage. Before retiring from the program in 2001, he was instrumental in landing the 2002 NCAA Skiing Championships that UAA hosted at Kincaid Park and Alyeska Ski Resort. It was the second time Crews helped UAA earn an NCAA host role (1987), and it ended in triumph as his former recruit, Aurore de Maulmont. Outside of UAA, Crews also worked with former Olympic gold medalist Tommy Moe during his heyday in the early 1990s. Currently the director of the Alyeska Ski Club, he has helped host the U.S. National Alpine Championships in 2005, 2007 and 2009. He and his wife Barbara live in Girdwood and are the parents of three children, Abigail, Laura and Nicholas.
