2010 Kendall Hockey Classic Preview

he George M. Sullivan Arena once again plays host to one of the premier early-season collegiate tournaments in the country when the 20th edition of the Kendall Hockey Classic takes the ice on Oct. 8-9. This year’s Classic will showcase host Alaska Anchorage as the Seawolves look to overthrow in-state rival and defending champion Alaska Fairbanks. Making their second appearance since winning the inaugural tournament in 1984 is the Fighting Sioux of North Dakota, while the Air Force Falcons will round out the field with their third appearance. For the first four years after its rebirth in 1999, the tournament champion was based on overall win-loss record. The 2003 and 2004 Classics changed to a true tournament format, with the winners of the opening contests meeting in the championship game. The format switched back to overall win-loss record in 2007, which continues this year.

Schedule Friday, October 8

Saturday, October 9

North Dakota vs. Alaska Fairbanks, 4:07 p.m. Air Force vs. Alaska Anchorage, 7:07 p.m.

Here’s a brief look at the 2010 field: ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES Senior co-captains Tommy Grant and Craig Parkinson lead the host school into action as the Seawolves aim for their sixth Classic title and first since 2006. An all-tournament selection at last year’s tournament, Grant will spearhead the UAA offense in 2009-10 after posting a the second-most goals (9), points (26) and shots on goal (98) as a junior. Parkinson, who put up 6-5—11 totals last year, will look to increase his scoring opportunities to take advantage of an impressive .188 shot percentage. Fellow seniors Sean Wiles (9 goals) and Nick Haddad (5 goals) also return to give UAA an experienced front line in the rugged Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while senior Luka Vidmar and junior Curtis Leinweber will patrol the blueline. In goal, coach Dave Shyiak’s squad will look to freshmen Rob Gunderson and Chris Kamal to carry the load. ALASKA FAIRBANKS NANOOKS The two-time defending champion Nanooks bring a three-game Classic win streak into this year’s Friday showdown with North Dakota. Coming off its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, UAF must

UAA senior co-captain Tommy Grant was named to the 2009 All-Tournament Team.

replace top scorer and 2009 Classic Most Outstanding Player Dion Knelsen, but the Nanooks lost only two other seniors. Sophomore Andy Taranto is back at right wing after scoring 42 points overall and leading the team with 31 points in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action. Junior defenseman Joe Sova, an AllClassic selection last year, returns after contributing 24 points last year, along with fellow blueliner Aaron Gens (6-15—21). In goal, junior Scott Greenham – last year’s Classic Outstanding Player after allowing just one goal against Michigan and Mercyhurst – returns after posting a 2.20 goals-against average. AIR FORCE FALCONS Making their first Classic appearance since 2003, Air Force returns its top three offensive performers from a year ago, including 22-goal scorer Jacques Lamoureaux and prolific defenseman Tim Kirby (5-19—24). Derrick Burnett, coming off a 33-point campaign, joins fellow senior Lamoureaux as the Falcons try to improve on a solid 2009-10 season in which they went 16-156 overall and 14-8-6 in Atlantic Hockey, tying for third place. Like the Seawolves, the Falcons will welcome a new face between the pipes in 2010-11, with returners Stephen Caple and David Bosner combining for just five appearances in goal last season. NORTH DAKOTA FIGHTING SIOUX The Seawolves’ WCHA rivals from North Dakota begin the 2010-11 at the Classic with a top-5 national ranking and as one of the favorites in college hockey’s toughest league. UND is coming off of a 25-13-5 season in which the Fighting Sioux won the Broadmoor Trophy as WCHA Final Five champions and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the eighth straight year. The Sioux return 22 letterwinners in 201011, including fifth-year senior captain and 2009 All-American Chay Genoway, 200910 WCHA Rookie of the Year Danny Kristo (15-21—36) and two-time AllWCHA junior goalie Brad Eidsness (.910 career saves percentage, 2.34 GAA). UND is back at the Classic for the first time since winning the inaugural title in 1984 when future NHL netminder Jon Casey captured Most Outstanding Player honors. 3

Classic History

S

tarted as an eight-team tournament in January 1984, the Kendall Hockey Classic has grown into one of the premier preseason college hockey tournaments in the nation. Initially known as the First Interstate Classic, the tourney’s format would switch to the current four-team field in 1986. The Classic was discontinued in 1993 when the Seawolves joined the WCHA, but was reborn in 1999 when the WCHA reduced its league schedule to 28 games. From 1986-92 and 1999-2000, the tournament was known as the Nissan/Jeep or Johnson Nissan Classic. The tourney was named the Nye Frontier Classic from 2001-07. Kendall begins its title sponsorship in 2008. Host Alaska Anchorage has won the Classic five times, claiming its third title in four years in 2006 after claiming back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2003. The Seawolves also posted tournament championships in 1990 and 1988. Seawolf players have hoisted the Classic’s Most Outstanding Player trophy on six occasions (Josh Lunden, 2007; Shea Hamilton, 2004; Dallas Steward, 2003; Mike Scott, 2001 and Seawolf Hall-of-Famer Paul Krake,1988 and 1990). UAA has an overall record of 19-14-7 in 18 Classic tournaments and has played for the championship nine times.

UAA’s Paul Krake is the only player in the 15-year history of the Nye Frontier Classic to earn multiple Most Outstanding Player Awards, claiming the honors in 1988 and 1990. The Seawolves won the Classic title in both of those seasons.

2010 KENDALL HOCKEY CLASSIC

UAA’s Mike Scott (1999-02) earned Most Outstanding Player honors in 2001, marking the first time in tournament history the MOP was awarded to a player on a nonchampionship team.

North Dakota goalie Jon Casey earned the very first Classic Most Outstanding Player Award after leading the Fighting Sioux to the inaugural tournament title over UAA in 1984. Casey would go on to have a successful NHL career, including helping lead the Minnesota North Stars to the 1991 Stanley Cup Finals. Former Colorado College standout Peter Sejna was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2002 Classic after leading the Tigers to the tournament title. Sejna went on to claim the Hobey Baker Memorial Award that same season.

CLASSIC ALL-TIME

The Classic and the Frozen Four

In 18 previous tournaments, seven teams that have played in the Classic have advanced to the Frozen Four that same season. The 2000-01 Classic field featured two teams that went on to the Frozen Four (Michigan and Michigan State). On two occasions the defending NCAA Champion participated in the Classic (Northern Michigan, 1991-92; Boston College, 2001-02). Year Team Classic Finish NCAA Finish 2004-05 Minnesota Runner-up Semifinals 2000-01 Michigan First Semifinals 2000-01 Michigan State Runner-up Semifinals 1988-89 Minnesota Fourth Runner-up 1987-88 Maine First Semifinals 1986-87 Minnesota First Semifinals 1983-84 North Dakota First Semifinals Seventeen Classic teams all-time have qualified for the ensuing NCAA Tournament. On four occasions (1987-88, 1991-92, 2000-01 and 2002-03) half of the four-team field participated in the national tournament. Twelve of 16 Classic tournaments have featured at least one NCAA qualifier.

Determining a Champion

All tied games will have a shootout immediately following the end of the overtime period. The games will be officially recorded as a tie. The shootout result will only count toward breaking potential ties to determine the Classic champion. Regular shootout rules apply, with each team getting five shots from five different players on the goaltender. If still tied, then a sudden-death shootout with take place. FORMULA FOR DETERMINING NYE FRONTIER CLASSIC CHAMPION

1. Win-Loss-Tie record If still tied, the following tie-breakers, in order, will be used: A. Win-Loss record inclusive of shootout results B. Head-to-head results C. Goal differential (GS-GA=GD) D. Fewest goals allowed E. Shootout differential (GS-GA=GD) If still tied, co-champions will be declared.

Alaska Anchorage’s Josh Lunden was selected to the All-Tournament team in 2008 and 2009 after claiming the Classic’s Most Outstanding Player award in 2007.

Dr. Steve Cobb

Director of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage

In 10 seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic

department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways. The 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 campaigns were three of the most memorable in school history, highlighted by three Final Four appearances for Seawolf basketball teams (women twice, men once), and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country, skiing (three times), and men’s track & field (twice). With UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, a planning phase is also under way for the construction of a new on-campus sports facility at UAA. He has also recently overseen several upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of a new gym floor and bleachers and the construction of the All-American/Academic All-American honors wall. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Hockey Classic and Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State. Dr. Cobb and his wife Sandra reside in East Anchorage.

Seawolf Hall of Fame

2010 INDUCTEE

F

LINDA BRUNS

ormer coach Linda Bruns, who brought the Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball program to prominence in the NCAA Division II ranks, will be the lone inductee in the Seawolf Hall of Fame’s Class of 2010. When Bruns took over a fledgling UAA women’s basketball program in 1979, the Seawolves had experienced little success and faced a daunting schedule loaded with Division I teams. By the time she left 11 years later, Bruns had turned the Seawolves into perennial winners, leaving a legacy that included 176 victories, three NCAA Tournament appearances, three conference titles, two conference coach-ofthe-year awards (1986 & ’88) and the establishment of the Northern Lights Invitational. Without an NCAA or conference affiliation in the early years, the Seawolves were relegated to playing major schools such as Oregon, Washington and Montana on a regular basis, resulting in losing records in her first three campaigns. But in 1982-83, with the move to NCAA Division II status, the Seawolves earned the first of eight consecutive winning records under her leadership, followed by the first 20-win season in 1983-84. The 1984-85 campaign was UAA’s first in the Continental Divide Conference, and the Seawolves were quick to establish themselves as contenders, tying for second in the eight-team league. Led by national freshman-of-the-year Robin Graul and fellow future Seawolf Hall-of-Famer Cheryl Bishop, Bruns’ squad made more history in 1985-86 with its first CDC title and NCAA Tournament berth. In 1987-88, the Seawolves posted program-bests of 24 victories and an NCAA ‘Sweet 16’ postseason advancement – marks that would stand for 20 years – while going undefeated in their 14-game league schedule. Another 20-win season and NCAA berth ensued in 1988-89 and, despite falling short of the postseason in her final season, Bruns’ 1989-90 team pulled one of the most memorable accomplishments in Seawolf and NCAA Div. II history when it defeated Division I squads Boise State, Wake Forest and South Alabama on consecutive nights to capture the Northern Lights Invitational title. That summer, Bruns moved on to become the head coach at Northern Arizona University for three years, eventually staying in Flagstaff and entering the restaurant business there. Born in Nebraska and raised in Montana, the former schoolteacher and coach died on Oct. 16, 2008 after a battle with cancer. The Seawolf women honored Bruns by wearing her initials, “LB,” on their uniforms during their run to the 2009 NCAA Div. II Final Four.
