2010 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEASON PREVIEW
I
n two seasons under Chris Green, the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team has ascended from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference basement all the way to the penthouse. Now comes the hard part – staying there. The 2010 campaign will be the Seawolves’ first as defending GNAC champions, following on the heels of the best season in school history. Among last year’s accomplishments, UAA posted records of 23-8 overall and 14-2 in the GNAC (winning the league by three matches), the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory, and a final national rank of No. 24. With four starters among the seven total letterwinners returning from that squad, Green could have the Seawolves primed for another title run. “We certainly lost some experience with our three graduated seniors,” said Green, the 2009 GNAC Coach of the Year. “Without those three, it’s going to be tough. We lost our libero (All-GNAC honorable mention pick Stacie Meisner) and our setter (GNAC Player of the Year Calli Scott), so there are two key positions where you have your first-ball and second-ball contacts. “But I think we have plenty of talent coming in, and it will be our job as coaches to identify who gives us the best chance to succeed.” While question marks linger at setter and along the back row, Green will have the luxury of a proven set of attackers and defenders at the net, led by returning allconference players Cortney Lundberg and Jackie Matthisen. At 6-1, Lundberg – the team’s lone senior – brings both size and talent to the middle blocker position. Last year the Montana native earned second-team AVCA All-West Region and All-GNAC honors, posting a league-best 1.14 blocks per set. UAA’s all-time attack percentage leader (.298) also recorded 2.54 kills per set and hit .307 for the season. “Cortney is one of the more improved players that we’ve had over the last two years,” said Green. “We are counting on her to get some kills for us this year.” Meanwhile, Matthisen emerged in 2009 as one of the nation’s top outside hitters, finishing second in the GNAC and 15th in NCAA Division II with 4.04 kps. The former East Anchorage High School star became the first Seawolf sophomore in 20 years to earn first-team all-conference honors and also made the AVCA’s second-team all-region squad. In 16 GNAC matches,

BELOW RIGHT: Junior outside hitter Jackie Matthisen ranked No. 2 in the GNAC in points per set (4.41) while averaging 2.65 digs per set.
Matthisen improved her numbers to 4.63 kps and hit an impressive .286. Fellow local product McKenzie Moss, also a junior, rejoins Matthisen on the outside. The former Bartlett High standout made a quantum leap from her rookie season, posting numbers of 3.16 kps, 2.67 digs per set – both second-best on the team – and a .191 attack percentage. Moss took the court in every set of every match as a sophomore, leading the Seawolves with 13 double-doubles and posting double-digit kills on 21 occasions. Sophomore defensive specialist Nikkie Viotto is the Seawolves’ fourth returning starter. The Eagle River native also played in all 114 sets in 2009, averaging 1.56 dps.

She will be one of several candidates for the libero position this year. “It will be a big battle to fill the libero spot,” Green said. “Nikkie did a good job coming in and filling that right side on the back row. I think she’s got the experience, but we have a lot of talent coming in the defensive area, and it will just be a matter of who practices the best and earns that spot.” Among the three other returning letterwinners – all sophomores – Marie Borowikow accumulated the most experience last year. The team’s tallest player at 6-3, the German played in 113 of 114 sets at outside hitter, averaging 1.69 kills, 0.83

blocks and hitting .191. Oregon native Shelby Hollister is also back on the outside after playing in 112 sets as a true freshman. She ranked second on the team and 12th in the GNAC with 33 aces. Texas native Leah McWilliams saw action in eight matches last year and will be one of the candidates to replace departed senior Ashley Bates at the other middle blocker position, along with returning squad member Jamie Russell. Perhaps the strongest pound-for-pound player on the team, Lee Golden could make a major impact after sitting out 2009 as a redshirt. The former JC transfer from Hillsborough (Fla.) Community College gives UAA one of the deepest outside-hitter talent pools in Division II.

Meanwhile, a pair of transfers and one true freshman will battle for playing time at the setter position. Northern Michigan transfer Maddie Ogden brings the most experience, having played the last two seasons in one of the nation’s toughest regions. As a freshman in 2008, Ogden led the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with 10.39 assists per set. After sitting out a year from the sport, Anchorage native Adriana Aukusitino returns to the court with the Seawolves. The former Service High standout was a JC allstar as a freshman setter at Highline (Wash.) Community College in 2008. Meanwhile, Palmer native Siobhan Johansen joins the fray after helping Colony High to a Class 4A State Tournament run-

ner-up finish in 2009, capturing the tourney’s Most Outstanding Setter award. Johansen is one of six true freshmen, including four Alaskans, to come aboard in 2010. Traveling the shortest distance but expected to make a big splash is Chugiak High product Robyn Burton. After helping the Mustangs to the state tournament the past two seasons, Green thinks the 5-11 middle blocker will push the returners for playing time. On the back row, Quincy Haught (Gilbert, Ariz.), Jordan Bush (Graham, Wash.) and Shana Powell (Sterling/Soldotna HS) will be among the candidates at libero after outstanding prep careers. Middle blocker and Haines native Carlee Heinmiller will join the squad in a walk-on role as well.

SEAWOLF COACHING STAFF
CHRIS GREEN Head Coach • 3rd Season
I
n just two seasons at the helm of the Alaska Anchorage volleyball program, head coach Chris Green has led the Seawolves to one of the most remarkable turnarounds in collegiate volleyball, culminating with the program’s first-ever Great Northwest Athletic Conference title and NCAA Tournament win last year. After being picked to finish seventh in the GNAC’s preseason coaches’ poll, Green’s 2009 squad wound up winning the league by three full matches, boosted by a school-record 13-match win streak. The Nebraska native earned both the GNAC and NCAA Div. II West Region coach-of-the-year awards as the Seawolves tied for the best winning percentage (.742) and posted the second-most victories in program history. In addition to Green’s individual honors, UAA also garnered the GNAC’s Player of the Year award from senior setter Calli Scott, plus first-team all-league accolades by sophomore outside hitter Jackie Matthisen under his leadership. In 2008, Green took over a UAA club that had won just five matches the previous campaign, producing a solid 15-14 mark. The Seawolves captured the title of their own Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational and recorded their first win over a ranked team in almost a decade when they beat then-No. 8 Augustana. Under Green’s tutelage, outside hitter Rhea Cardwell became UAA’s first volleyball All-American, and Scott became the first Seawolf to earn GNAC Newcomer of the Year accolades. Coming off four straight national semifinals appearances and the 2007 national title, Green made the jump from junior college to the NCAA Division II level in the spring of 2008. Before becoming the sixth coach UAA history, he spent the previous nine seasons (1999-07) as the head coach at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff, Neb. Green built a powerhouse program at WNCC, compiling a 453-55 record that culminated in the 2007 NJCAA Div. I national championship. The Cougars finished in the top 10 at the national tournament in all of Green’s seasons, including a current string of four straight ‘Final 4’ appearances. In the last three seasons, WNCC went 163-7 and finished national runner-up in 2006. Under Green’s tutelage, the Cougars earned a total of 10 first-team and six second-team All-America certificates and regularly placed players at NCAA Div. I and II programs. WNCC’s players also found success in the classroom, with the team maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average in all nine of his seasons. The Gering, Neb., native also coached seven years at the prep level, including a 4-year stint at Kauai High School in Lihue, Hawaii. Green earned a bachelor of science in mathematics from the University of Nebraska in 1991, and received his master’s degree from the University of Wyoming in 1995.

Rose was a four-year letterwinner at Southwest Texas State, where she earned second team All-Southland Conference honors three times. She was the Southland Conference Tournament MVP as a senior, and was named to the all-tournament team as a junior. The career record-holder for digs at SWT, Rose also received the school’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in 1998. THE GNAC / SEAWOLF FACILITIES
S
tretching from Alaska to Oregon to Montana – and now to Canada – the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has quickly established itself as one of the most successful leagues in the NCAA Division II ranks. Founded in 2001 as a 10-team league, the GNAC this year returns to its original membership number with the addition of Simon Fraser of Burnaby, British Columbia. Along with Montana State Billings, which joined the league in 2007, Simon Fraser joins original GNAC members Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Fairbanks, Central Washington, Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin’s, Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and Western Washington in 2010-11. In the last three years alone, the GNAC has produced one national team title (2009 SPU women’s soccer), three national runner-up finishes, three NCAA Final 4 basketball appearances (all by UAA’s men and women), and top-5 NCAA women’s cross country placings by both SPU and UAA in 2009. UAA sponsors seven of the GNAC’s 14 sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

SEAWOLF FACILITIES
T
he Seawolves host their home matches on campus in the 1,000-seat Wells Fargo Sports Complex. The gym, which has housed Seawolf volleyball, basketball and gymnastics since 1978, provides a comfortable atmosphere for both competitors and fans. Along with a refurbished playing surface in 2010, the gym recently received a facelift with the addition of new plastic bleachers to replace the former wooden seats. Seawolf volleyball players also make use of the WFSC’s other facilities — weight room, fitness center, 25-meter pool, jogging track and sauna — for training and recreation.
The home of Seawolf volleyball for three decades, the Wells Fargo Sports Complex has earned the reputation as perhaps the loudest venue in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, providing an intimidating atmosphere for opponents.

FRAN ULMER
UAA ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT STAFF
Chancellor – University of Alaska Anchorage
As chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage, Fran Ulmer brings to the position 30 years of experience of public policy in Alaska. Previously, Ulmer was a fellow at the Institute of Politics at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Public Policy at the Institute of Social and Economic Research. In the early 1980s, Ulmer served as the Mayor of Juneau, then a member of the Alaska House of Representatives (1986-1994) and in 1994, she became the first female Lieutenant Governor of Alaska. In that year, she was appointed to the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission by President Bill Clinton and served on this international board for 11 years. She has participated in numerous panels, task forces, commissions and forums as a speaker, moderator and panelist to address the intersection of science, economics, politics and policy. Ulmer currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the National Parks Conservation Association, the Advisory Board of the Union of Concerned Scientists and the Alaska Nature Conservancy Board. She has a BA in political science and economics and a Law Degree from the University of Wisconsin.
DR. STEVE COBB
Director of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage
In 10 seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways. The 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 campaigns were three of the most memorable in school history, highlighted by three Final Four appearances for Seawolf basketball teams (women twice, men once), and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country, skiing (three times), and men’s track & field (twice). With UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, a planning phase is also under way for the construction of a new on-campus sports facility at UAA. He has also recently overseen several upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of a new gym floor and bleachers and the construction of the All-American/Academic All-American honors wall. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Hockey Classic and Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State. Dr. Cobb and his wife Sandra reside in East Anchorage.

ith city boudaries that stretch to nearly the size of the state of Delaware, more than 275,000 people are lucky to call Anchorage home. On a global scale, Anchorage is located as far north as Helsinki, Finland, and as far west as Honolulu, Hawaii. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city (more than four times larger than the second-largest town), an international air crossroads, and the business and cultural center of the state. Almost 300 flights arrive daily at Anchorage International Airport. Anchorage is a recreational paradise as well, boasting more than 14,000 acres of parkland and nearly 300 miles of paved and wilderness biking, skiing and hiking trails. In addition, the city sports dozens of
lakes, softball, baseball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, and six scenic golf courses. Chugach State Park is located 15 minutes from downtown Anchorage. With 495,000 acres, Chugach is the third-largest state park in the United States and offers a variety of year-round recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, camping, cross country skiing and wildlife viewing. Due to the warming effects of the Pacific Ocean currents and protection from the Chugach Mountains, Anchorage is located in Alaska’s so-called banana belt. Anchorage’s climate resembles that of San Francisco in the summer (highs of 75 degrees) and a Rocky Mountain ski resort in the winter (lows of 20

The residents of the city share the Anchorage bowl with more than 1,000 Moose, which are often seen on UAA’s campus throughout the year. In addition, black bears, grizzliess, foxes, wolves, lynx, wolverines, Dall sheep and bald eagles are just some of the animals that make their homes here. Salmon fishing is more than a pastime to Anchorage residents. Red and King Salmon can be caught from the many rivers and creeks that run through the city.

SEAWOLF ATHLETICS
Nicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as members of NCAA Division I in men’s ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, and women’s cross country. UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic and the Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournament. Since joining the NCAA ranks in 1977, UAA has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 150 Seawolves have earned All-America honors, and UAA has produced 15 individual national champions since 1991. The Seawolves are coming off perhaps the most successful year in program history in 2009-10, including a fourth straight NCAA appearance for women’s basketball. The women’s cross country team recorded its first-ever GNAC and West Region titles before finishing a program-best 5th place at the NCAAs, while the volleyball team completed the best season in school history with a 23-8 overall record and its first GNAC title and first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. Seawolves student-athletes have enjoyed unprecedented success in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 13 of the last 16 years.
