2011 Kendall Hockey Classic Preview

he 21st edition of one of the best early-season collegiate tournaments in the country, the Kendall Hockey Classic, returns to the George M. Sullivan Arena on Oct. 7-8. This year’s Classic will showcase host Alaska Anchorage as the Seawolves look to claim their first title since 2006 and sixth overall. Making their sixth appearance in the tournament is in-state rival Alaska Fairbanks, while Clarkson University and St. Cloud State will be dressing for the Classic for the first time. For the first four years after its rebirth in 1999, the tournament champion was based on overall win-loss record. The 2003 and 2004 Classics changed to a true tournament format, with the winners of the opening contests meeting in the championship game. The format switched back to overall win-loss record in 2007, which continues this year.

Kendall Hockey Classic

Schedule Friday, October 7

St. Cloud State vs. Alaska fairbanks, 5:07 pm Clarkson vs. Alaska Anchorage, 8:07 pm

Saturday, October 8

Clarkson vs. Alaska Fairbanks, 4:07 pm St. Cloud State vs. Alaska Anchorage, 7:07 pm

CLARKSON GOLDEN KNIGHTS The Clarkson Golden Knights will not only enter the Kendall Hockey Classic for the first time ever, but will be led by first-time head coach Casey Jones and his newly appointed staff. Jones takes the Golden Knight reins after spending the last three seasons as associate coach at Cornell University. Jones will look to lead his team to prominence with 20 lettermen returning, which made up 70 percent of the point scoring from last season. The Golden Knights will likely see offensive production from sophomore forward Allan McPherson, who tallied 8-15– 23 totals in 2010-11, and senior forwards Jake Morley (7-15–22) and Nick Tremblay (9-12–21). Defensively, David Pratt and Alex Boak return for their sophomore season after registering nine points apiece last year, while senior Paul Karpowich (.912sv%, 3.05 gaa, 15-18-2) will dress between the pipes.

Here’s a brief look at the 2011 field: ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES Coming off a historic season in 201011 that included the most victories since joining the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and the program’s second-ever berth to the WCHA Red Baron Final Five, UAA has the momentum rolling as it aims for the title of its own tournament. The 2011-12 Seawolf roster commences the season as one of the youngest in the country, sporting eight sophomores and nine freshmen. The rookies will look to the leadership of the upperclassmen, who feature three seniors and eight juniors. Leading the Seawolf pack offensively will be a pair of sophomores in Matt Bailey and Jordan Kwas. The Canadian duo combined for just under 20 percent of the point production from last season. Two Anchorage locals – senior Brad Gorham and junior Scott Warner – will hold the defensive line, while sophomore goaltenders Rob Gunderson and Chris Kamal could split time again in the crease. ALASKA FAIRBANKS NANOOKS Backstopping the Nanooks as Alaska Fairbanks looks for its third title in four years will be the Classic’s 2009 Most Outstanding Player, senior goaltender Scott Greenham. Since suiting up between the pipes fulltime in 2009, Greenham has led UAF to the NCAA Tournament in 2009-10 and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association

Championships last season. The Nanooks will look for goal scoring from sophomore Cody Kunyk, a member of the Classic’s all-tournament team in 2010, who led UAF last season with 30 points, and junior Andy Taranto. From the blueline, senior Aaron Gens returns after contributing 2-19–21 totals a year ago.

Alaska Anchorage sophomore forward Matt Bailey added a goal and an assist against North Dakota in the Classic last season.

Alaska Fairbanks sophomore forward Cody Kunyk was named to the Kendall Hockey Classic All-Tournament team last year.

ST. CLOUD STATE HUSKIES Also making their inaugural appearance in the Classic, the Huskies enter the 201112 slate under the guidance of seventhyear head coach Bob Motzko. Under his tutelage, SCSU has four showings at the WCHA Final Five, while advancing to the NCAA Tournament two seasons ago. Senior Jared Festler and junior Drew LeBlanc will lead a young team that features 10 freshmen and seven sophomores. LeBlanc topped the team with 13 goals and 39 points, while Festler contributed with 12-12–24 totals. The Huskies defense will be spearheaded by the return of sophomore Nick Jensen (5-18–23) and junior netminder Mike Lee. Lee suited up for SCSU in 30 games, producing a 12-14-4 record and a .910 save percentage.

Classic History

S

tarted as an eight-team tournament in January 1984, the Kendall Hockey Classic has grown into one of the premier preseason college hockey tournaments in the nation. Initially known as the First Interstate Classic, the tourney’s format would switch to the current four-team field in 1986. The Classic was discontinued in 1993 when the Seawolves joined the WCHA, but was reborn in 1999 when the WCHA reduced its league schedule to 28 games. From 1986-92 and 1999-2000, the tournament was known as the Nissan/Jeep or Johnson Nissan Classic. The tourney was named the Nye Frontier Classic from 2001-07. Kendall began its title sponsorship in 2008. Host Alaska Anchorage has won the Classic five times, claiming its third title in four years in 2006 after claiming back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2003. The Seawolves also posted tournament championships in 1990 and 1988. Seawolf players have hoisted the Classic’s Most Outstanding Player trophy on six occasions (Josh Lunden, 2007; Shea Hamilton, 2004; Dallas Steward, 2003; Mike Scott, 2001 and Seawolf Hall-of-Famer Paul Krake,1988 and 1990). UAA has an overall record of 20-14-8 in 19 Classic tournaments and has played for the championship nine times.

UAA’s Paul Krake is the only player in the 15-year history of the Nye Frontier Classic to earn multiple Most Outstanding Player Awards, claiming the honors in 1988 and 1990. The Seawolves won the Classic title in both of those seasons.

2011 KENDALL HOCKEY CLASSIC

UAA’s Mike Scott (1999-02) earned Most Outstanding Player honors in 2001, marking the first time in tournament history the MOP was awarded to a player on a nonchampionship team.

North Dakota goalie Jon Casey earned the very first Classic Most Outstanding Player Award after leading the Fighting Sioux to the inaugural tournament title over UAA in 1984. Casey would go on to have a successful NHL career, including helping lead the Minnesota North Stars to the 1991 Stanley Cup Finals. Former Colorado College standout Peter Sejna was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2002 Classic after leading the Tigers to the tournament title. Sejna went on to claim the Hobey Baker Memorial Award that same season.

CLASSIC ALL-TIME

The Classic and the Frozen Four

In 20 previous tournaments, eight teams that have played in the Classic have advanced to the Frozen Four that same season. The 2000-01 Classic field featured two teams that went on to the Frozen Four (Michigan and Michigan State). On two occasions the defending NCAA Champion participated in the Classic (Northern Michigan, 1991-92; Boston College, 2001-02). Year Team Classic Finish NCAA Finish 2010-11 North Dakota First Semifinals 2004-05 Minnesota Runner-up Semifinals 2000-01 Michigan First Semifinals 2000-01 Michigan State Runner-up Semifinals 1988-89 Minnesota Fourth Runner-up 1987-88 Maine First Semifinals 1986-87 Minnesota First Semifinals 1983-84 North Dakota First Semifinals Eighteen Classic teams all-time have qualified for the ensuing NCAA Tournament. On four occasions (1987-88, 1991-92, 2000-01 and 2002-03) half of the four-team field participated in the national tournament. 13 of 17 Classic tournaments have featured at least one NCAA qualifier.

Determining a Champion

All tied games will have a shootout immediately following the end of the overtime period. The games will be officially recorded as a tie. The shootout result will only count toward breaking potential ties to determine the Classic champion. Regular shootout rules apply, with each team getting five shots from five different players on the goaltender. If still tied, then a sudden-death shootout with take place. FORMULA FOR DETERMINING NYE FRONTIER CLASSIC CHAMPION

1. Win-Loss-Tie record If still tied, the following tie-breakers, in order, will be used: A. Win-Loss record inclusive of shootout results B. Head-to-head results C. Goal differential (GS-GA=GD) D. Fewest goals allowed E. Shootout differential (GS-GA=GD) If still tied, co-champions will be declared.

Alaska Anchorage’s Josh Lunden was selected to the All-Tournament team in 2008 and 2009 after claiming the Classic’s Most Outstanding Player award in 2007.

tom case

Chancellor – University of Alaska Anchorage

T

om Case assumed the chancellorship of the University of Alaska Anchorage in May 2011. A retired 3-star Air Force Lt. General, Case has spent more than 12 years in Alaska, including two Air Force tours of duty, five years as dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), and three years as president and chief operating officer of a state-owned, independently operated Aerospace corporation. The 1969 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy began his 33-year military career flying in Vietnam. Later, he served at the Pentagon, was selected as the first Air Force Chief of Staff Chair on the faculty of the National War College, and eventually went on to command two fighter wings, a numbered air force and Alaskan Command. He also served as deputy commander and chief of staff for the nation’s two largest geographic joint combatant commands. After retiring from the Air Force, Case returned to higher education as dean of CBPP at UAA. During his tenure, CBPP added several new certificate and degree programs, including a graduate certificate in Global Logistics, and played an instrumental role in the formation of CBPP’s Experimental Economics Laboratory.

Dr. Steve Cobb

Director of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage

In 11 seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic

department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways. Starting with the 2007-08 campaign, UAA has enjoyed four of the most memorable athletic seasons in school history, highlighted by three Final Four appearances for Seawolf basketball teams (women twice, men once), plus NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country (four times), skiing (four times), and men’s track & field (twice). In fact, with UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, ground soon will be broken on UAA’s planned $109 million Seawolf and Community Arena on campus. He has also overseen major upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of a new gym floor and bleachers at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex in 2010. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Hockey Classic and Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State. Dr. Cobb and his wife Sandra reside in East Anchorage.
