2011 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEASON PREVIEW

With 16 returners and 10 newcomers,

2

the 2011 edition of the Alaska Anchorage ski team has the depth and leadership to produce the program’s finest season in its 31 years of competition. Under 10th-year head coach Trond Flagstad, the Seawolves will set their sights on a podium finish at the NCAA Championships (March 9-12) – a feat that barely evaded them during the 2009 season when they posted a program-best fourth-place finish. “The NCAAs is on the East Coast (Stove, VT), which means sea-level racing for us,” said Flagstad. “This definitely gives us an advantage over the other teams in our region since we live and train at sea level. We need to qualify a full 12-person team and improve upon our 2009 result.” To achieve these goals, the Seawolves will look to 10 of the 16 returners – all of whom have NCAA experience – while five of the 10 have competed in two national meets. Leading the women’s Alpine team will be two-time NCAA participant and threetime All-America honoree Alex Parker. A junior from Calgary, Alberta, Parker has led the women’s squad for the past two seasons, racking up 10 top-three results. Parker will be joined by NCAA participants junior Sandra MacDonald and sophomores Petra Gantnerova and Kayla Hoog-Fry. The men’s Alpine team will be powered by the the 2010 NCAA slalom champion in sophomore Andreas Adde. A local of Osteras, Norway, Adde became just the eighth Seawolf skier to claim an individual title last season, while registering three victories during the regular season. In addition to Adde, senior Egil Ismar and junior Halfdan Falkum-Hansen have three NCAA meets under their belts combined. The junior duo of Jaime Bronga and Laura Rombach will don the Green & Gold for the women’s Nordic team. Both Seawolves have competed in two NCAAs, with Bronga earning her first All-America honor last season with an eighth-place result in the freestyle event. Combined, the two have dressed for 50 races. The lone Seawolf with NCAA experience on the men’s Nordic team is senior Max Treinen. Treinen, from Anchorage, was a member of the 2009 men’s Nordic team that placed all three scorers in the

Treinen just missed qualifying for the 2010 NCAAs, after sitting out the majority of the season due to an iron deficiency. Even with all the returning experience, the Seawolves will use 10 newcomers (8 men, 2 women) to fill the gaps and pick up any extra slack. “We definitely had a good team last year but now we have depth that will generate healthy competition for the spots on the NCAA team,” said Flagstad. “We only have one newcomer on the Alpine team but we expect Niko to be one of our top Alpine skiers on the men’s team, while half of the Nordic team is new with some very strong skiers coming in.” T he schedule will commence early with the Alaska Nordic Cup on Nov. 20-21 before the bulk of the season starts with the Alpine portion of the Utah Invite on

Jan. 8-9. UAA will also participate in the MSU Invite on Jan. 15-16, the Nordic races of the Utah Invite (Jan. 21-22), New Mexico Invite (Feb. 4-5) and the Denver Invite (Feb. 11-12). “The schedule is very favorable for us in many ways,” said Flagstad. “Logistically, our conference schedule is nice with several back-to-back meets, which means less travel.” Before competing at the NCAA Championships, the Seawolves will return to Utah on Feb. 25-26 for the RMISA Championships, which also acts as the NCAA West Regional. “We know that we are capable of winning meets, and if we take a full team to the NCAAs, anything is possible,” said Flagstad. “A lot can happen, but the focus is to go out and give 100 percent each time we race.”

overall with the University of Alaska Anchorage and his seventh as the head coach for the Seawolf ski program in 2011. UAA skiers have earned a combined 25 All-America accolades since Flagstad took over the reins of the program, and 52 overall since he joined the Seawolf coaching staff in 2001. Last season, Flagtad produced five All-Americans for a 7thplace team result and led UAA to a program-best 2nd-place finish at the RMISA / West Region Championships. Four Seawolves garnered All-RMISA honors, while 17 were named to the all-academic team. In 2009, Flagstad made UAA history by leading his team to a program-best fourth place at the NCAA Championships. UAA qualified a full team to the NCAAs, produced five All-Americans, six All-Conference honorees, one RMISA MVP, and landed a program-best 13 skiers on the All-Academic team. During his tenure UAA has also recorded a pair of sixth-place finishes at NCAAs and has earned a combined three individual National titles. Flagstad guided UAA to the unofficial title of the nation’s top Nordic squad in 2005, when the team recorded six top-10 finishes at Nationals, including two individual national titles. Mandy Kaempf’s sweep of the women’s classical and freestyle events at the 2005 NCAA Championships marked the first national title for the Seawolf Nordic program since 1997. Flagstad was an assistant with UAA’s Nordic team from 2001-03. The native of Ottestad, Norway, also coached cross-country running at UAA during the 2001-02 season. A World Cup competitor, he was a sponsored Nordic skier at a top Norwegian national level from 1985 to 2000. Flagstad lives in Anchorage with his wife Lindsey and sons, Vebjorn and Aksel.

of the Seawolves’ Alpine skiing program in 2011 is Sparky Anderson. In 2010, Anderson produced his second National Champion in Andreas Adde, who won the men’s slalom. UAA landed five skiers as All-Americans and finished 7th. Anderson also helped UAA to a program-best second-place finish at the RMISA / West Region Championships. During his second season, Anderson helped UAA to a program-best fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, producing five All-Americans and six All-Conference members. Anderson guided freshman standout Alex Parker to four individual titles and the RMISA Women’s Alpine MVP, while the UAA’s women’s Alpine team was the regional champion. In his first season back with UAA in 2008, Anderson helped guide the Seawolf Alpine squad to one of its most successful campaigns in recent history, qualifying a full squad of six skiers to NCAAs for the first time since 1999, while two racers earned AllAmerica honors. All told, the Seawolf downhillers combined for 25 individual top-10 results during the 2008 season. Anderson came as no stranger to UAA or collegiate ski racing, having coached the Seawolf Alpine squad in 2002, when UAA’s Aurore de Maulmont won the NCAA title in the giant slalom. Prior to coming to Alaska, he was the head ski coach at Brown University in Rhode Island from 1996-2000. Prior to rejoining the UAA coaching staff, Anderson worked as the program director for the Alyeska Ski Club in Girdwood for seven years. A 1991 graduate of the University of Nevada, Anderson earned four letters in skiing with the Wolf Pack, serving as team captain his senior season. After college, he moved to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, where he taught skiing for the Flori Woerndle Ski School. A year away from ski racing proved to be too much, and Anderson moved to Innsbruck, Austria, where he spent two years coaching a small FIS team at the Innsbruck International School. After leaving Europe, he moved to New England and spent two years coaching the Eastern Cup team at the Holderness School. Anderson grew up in Northern California and raced out of Bear Valley. He now resides in Girdwood with his wife Diana and daughter Kéa.

ment, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways. The 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 campaigns were three of the most memorable in school history, highlighted by three Final Four appearances for Seawolf basketball teams (women twice, men once), and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country, skiing (three times), and men’s track & field (twice). With UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, a planning phase is also under way for the construction of a new on-campus sports facility at UAA. He has also recently overseen several upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of a new gym floor and bleachers and the construction of the All-American/Academic All-American honors wall. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Hockey Classic and Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State. Dr. Cobb and his wife Sandra reside in East Anchorage.

ACADEMICS The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 students through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the University’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addiction Studies, the Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a minimum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.

SEAWOLF ATHLETICS

Nicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as

members of NCAA Division I in men’s ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, and women’s cross country. UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic and the Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournament. Since joining the NCAA ranks in 1977, UAA has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 150 Seawolves have earned All-America honors, and UAA has produced 15 individual national champions since 1991. The Seawolves are coming off perhaps the most successful year in program history in 2009-10, including a fourth straight NCAA appearance for women’s basketball. The women’s cross country team recorded its first-ever GNAC and West Region titles before finishing a program-best 5th place at the NCAAs, while the volleyball team completed the best season in school history with a 23-8 overall record and its first GNAC title and first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. Seawolves student-athletes have enjoyed unprecedented success in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 13 of the last 16 years.
