fter five seasons as the Seawolves’ head Alpine coach, Sparky Anderson enters his second season as the head coach of the entire Alaska Anchorage ski program in 2013. Prior to taking over head coaching duties in 2012, Anderson produced two national champions and seven downhill All-Americans throughout his five-year career from 2008-11 and 2002. Last season, Anderson helped the Seawolves to their fifth straight top-10 placing at the NCAAs, while finishing sixth overall at the RMISA/ West Region Championships. In 2010, Anderson produced his second national champion in Andreas Adde, who won the men’s slalom. UAA landed a combined five skiers as All-Americans and finished 7th at the national meet. Anderson also helped UAA to a program-best second-place finish at the RMISA/ West Region Championships. During his third season in 2009, Anderson helped UAA to a program-best fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships and helped THE ANDERSON FILE produce five All-Americans and six All-Conference members. Anderson came as no stranger to UAA or collegiate ski racing, having coached the Seawolf Alpine squad in 2002, when UAA’s Aurore de Maulmont won the NCAA title in the giant slalom. Prior to coming to Alaska, he was the head ski coach at Brown University in Rhode Island from 1996-2000. Prior to rejoining the UAA coaching staff, Anderson worked as the program director for the Alyeska Ski Club in Girdwood for seven years. A 1991 graduate of the University of Nevada, Anderson earned four letters in skiing with the Wolf Pack, serving as team captain his senior season. After college, he moved to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, where he taught skiing for the Flori Woerndle Ski School. A year away from ski racing proved to be too much, and Anderson moved to Innsbruck, Austria, where he spent two years coaching a small FIS team at the Innsbruck International School. After leaving Europe, he moved to New England and spent two years coaching the Eastern Cup team at the Holderness Anderson coached UAA’s Aurore de Maulmont School. when she won a NCAA title in 2002. In addition to his international experience, he holds USSA’s highest level of coach’s certification and currently serves as the Alaska Division’s USSA coaches education clinician. Over the years, he has been invited to coach at multiple national and regional events. Anderson grew up in Northern California and raced out of Bear Valley. He now resides in Girdwood with his wife Diana and daughter Kéa.

ANDREW KASTNING Head Nordic Coach 2nd Season

eading the Seawolves’ Nordic squad for his second season in 2013 will be Andrew Kastning. Last season, Kastning qualified a full six skiers to the NCAA Championships with senior Jaime Bronga taking home AllAmerica honors. Kastning also led the UAA women’s cross country ski team to six topthree individual results throughout the season, including RMISA MVP honors for Bronga. Kastning joins the UAA staff after an impressive two-year run as the assistant at Montana State. At MSU, he helped the Bobcats to a third-place finish on the Nordic side at the 2010 NCAA Championships, including five All-America performances. Prior to that, he served two seasons as an assistant at the University of Nevada from 2007-09, and worked with his hometown program, the Crested Butte Junior Nordic club team in Colorado, from 2004-06. Kastning also brings four years of collegiate experience as a competitor at the University of Vermont. He was a member of the best men’s Nordic team in the country in 2003 and served as team captain his senior season. He graduated with his bachelor’s degree from UVM in 2004.

ormer UAA standout Tor Christopherson returns to the UAA coaching staff as the program’s Nordic assistant in 2013. Christopherson raced for the Seawolves during the 2009-10 season during his first year of graduate schoolDuring the season, he qualified for the 2010 NCAA Championships in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Born and raised in Alaska, Christopherson will graduate this year with a master’s degree in Counselor Education.

2013 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SKIING Assistant Alpine Coach 4th Season

hree-time NCAA qualifier Julie-Pierre Leclerc will serve as the assistant Alpine coach for ther third season in 2013 after coaching in 2009 as the graduate assistant Alpine coach. Leclerc was a four-year letterwinner at UAA, posting the best women’s Alpine finishes for UAA during the 2003, 2004 and 2005 seasons. Leclerc made the RMISA All-Conference second team and the All-Academic Ski Team in 2004, as well as posting her best finish at nationals –14th in the slalom. Since graduating from UAA, Leclerc has spent the last three years working with the Alyeska Ski Club. She has also been a flight instructor for UAA’s aviation program during the past year. The native of Granby, Quebec, graduated from UAA in 2007 with a degree in aviation technology with emphases in professional piloting and aviation management. Leclerc and her husband Aaron Stiassny are the parents of two sons.

anielle Shannon joins the Alaska Anchorage staff for her first season as an assistant Alpine coach in 2013. Shannon comes to UAA following a collegiate career at Colby-Sawyer College, where she earned multiple All-America honors and was the 2009 NCAA giant slalom champion. Shannon attended Kennett High in New Hampshire where she was a three-sport athlete for the Eagles, participating in soccer, softball and ski.

he Seawolves concluded the 2012 slate after qualifying a full team – 12 participants – to the NCAA Skiing Championships for the first time since 2009. The Seawolves posted the secondbest team standing at Nationals, finishing fifth with 519 points. Throughout the four days, UAA received six All-America honors, including two by junior Andreas Adde. During the regular season, UAA posted two third-place team finishes, while claiming the Alaska Nordic Cup for the first time since 2006. Individually, senior Jaime Bronga led UAA with five podium finishes, earning the Anchorage native the RMISA women’s Nordic MVP. Along with Adde, Bronga claimed All-America honors as well as Sean Alexander, Alex Parker and Vanessa Berther. Additionally, Steffi Hiemer and Laura Rombach joined Bronga on the All-West Region team.

Nationally known as the strongest and most competitive conference in collegiate skiing, the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association is rich in tradition, history and success. The RMISA is the official association for college and university NCAA skiing teams in the Rocky Mountain region. The conference is comprised of nine NCAA Division I, one Division II and one Division III institutions from eight states. Making up the field is Alaska Anchorage, Colorado, Colorado Mountain College, Denver, Montana State, New Mexico, Utah and Westminster College and Wyoming. Since the introduction of the NCAA Skiing National Championship in 1954, schools from the RMISA have captured 51 of the 58 team titles and 286 of the 399 individual championships. 2012 RMISA Regular Season Team Standings

Chancellor – University of Alaska Anchorage

om Case assumed the chancellorship of the University of Alaska Anchorage in May 2011. A retired 3-star Air Force Lt. General, Case has spent more than 12 years in Alaska, including two Air Force tours of duty, five years as dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), and three years as president and chief operating officer of a state-owned, independently operated Aerospace corporation. The 1969 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy began his 33-year military career flying in Vietnam. Later, he served at the Pentagon, was selected as the first Air Force Chief of Staff Chair on the faculty of the National War College, and eventually went on to command two fighter wings, a numbered air force and Alaskan Command. He also served as deputy commander and chief of staff for the nation’s two largest geographic joint combatant commands. After retiring from the Air Force, Case returned to higher education as dean of CBPP at UAA. During his tenure, CBPP added several new certificate and degree programs, including a graduate certificate in Global Logistics, and played an instrumental role in the formation of CBPP’s Experimental Economics Laboratory. Married to his wife Susan for 42 years, Case has a daughter Donna, son-in-law Daniel and a granddaughter, Anna. His interests include leadership, education, communication, general aviation, community activities and outdoor sports.

Dr. Steve Cobb

Director of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage

In 12 seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways. Starting with the 2007-08 campaign, UAA has enjoyed five of the most memorable athletic seasons in school history, highlighted by four Elite Eight appearances for Seawolf basketball teams and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country (six times), skiing (five times), and men’s & women’s track & field (four times). In fact, with UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals. In the 2011-12 athletic campaign, the Seawolves placed a program-record 16th in NCAA Div. II standings in the Learfield Directors’ Cup, which measures nearly 300 D-II programs nationwide on overall athletic success. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, construction has also begun on UAA’s planned $109 million Seawolf and Community Arena on campus. He has also overseen major upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of a new gym floor and bleachers at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex in 2010. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Hockey Classic and SpringHill Suites Invitational volleyball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State. Dr. Cobb and his wife Sandra reside in East Anchorage.

ACADEMICS The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 students through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the University’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addiction Studies, the Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a minimum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.

SEAWOLF ATHLETICS

Nicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as

members of NCAA Division I in men’s ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, and men’s and women’s cross country. UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic. Since joining the NCAA ranks in 1977, UAA has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 181 Seawolves have earned All-America honors, and UAA has produced 16 individual national champions since 1991. In its 35th year of NCAA competition, UAA Athletics posted its most impressive performance yet in 2011-12. The Seawolves qualified teams or individuals from 10 of 11 sports for NCAA competition, including top-10 national team finishes by women’s basketball, both men’s and women’s cross country, skiing and men’s track & field. Seawolves student-athletes have enjoyed unprecedented success in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 15 of the last 18 years.
