T
he Alaska Anchorage men’s and women’s track & field teams concluded their first season of indoor competition in stellar fashion. The Seawolves qualified 12 student-athletes to the NCAA Championships, where they amassed 10 All-America honors and an NCAA Champion in junior Micah Chelimo. Combined, 15 Seawolves received All-West Region honors, while Chelimo and head coach Michael Friess were recognized as the West Region’s Male and Coach of the Year, respectively. The UAA women’s team came away with the team title at the GNAC Championships – breaking Seattle Pacific’s three-year run – while the men’s squad took second. Overall, 15 Seawolves were All-Conference recipients, while the teams registered eight individual and relay titles. Chelimo and Friess were acknowledged on the GNAC front as well as Karolin Anders, who took home GNAC Female Freshman of the Year honors. OUTDOOR RECAP

the All-America javelin duo of Franz Burghagen and national champion Cody Parker. On the conference circuit, the Seawolf women captured their first-ever league championship as they became only the second GNAC school ever to sweep the cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field titles. Sprinter Grace Morgan, Anders and Keino both earned two league titles, while Cody Thomas captured UAA’s first decathlon crown on the men’s side. Parker was named the GNAC’s Outdoor Track & Field Male Athlete of the Year, while Burghagen was Male Newcomer of the Year, Anders was Female Freshman of the Year and 23rd-year head coach Michael Friess was the Women’s Team Coach of the Year. Academically, senior Alfred Kangogo and Keino were recognized among the West Region’s top scholar-athletes as they earned spots on the men’s and women’s Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District Track & Field/Cross Country teams. Additionally, the UAA running programs – cross country and track & field combined – finished as the second-best in Div. II. Combined, the women’s teams finished third in the USTFCCCA list, while the men’s team was fourth. The only team to finish better was Adams State with a first place on the men’s side and second place on the women’s side.
Micah Chelimo captured his third NCAA title overall with a win in the 5,000 meters at the Indoor Championships in February.
2014 ALASKA ANCHORAGE TRACK & FIELD ith members in five states and the province of British Columbia, and with a strong presence in or near the largest city of each, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has established itself as one of the top NCAA Division II athletic conferences in the nation during its 11-year history. Founded in 2001, GNAC teams have had a remarkable 71 NCAA Division II top 10 national team finishes in 14 of the 16 sports it sponsors. The 2012-13 academic year was another banner season for the league, highlighted by top-4 NCAA finishes for UAA’s men’s cross country team (3rd), Simon Fraser’s men’s soccer team, and Western Washington’s basketball squads. Along with later additions Montana State Billings (2007) and Simon Fraser (2010), the GNAC is comprised of charter mem-
bers Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Fairbanks, Central Washington, Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin’s, Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and Western Washington. In the last six years, the GNAC has produced two national team titles (2009 SPU women’s soccer, 2012 WWU men’s basketball), three national runner-up finishes, six NCAA Final 4 basketball appearances (including three by UAA), and top-5 NCAA cross country placings by both SPU and UAA (both men and women’s squads). UAA sponsors nine of the GNAC’s 14 sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.
