2015-16 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEASON PREVIEW
2015-16 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
2
C
oming off one of the most successful seasons in program history, the Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball team has reloaded for what is certain to be another memorable campaign in 2015-16. The defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference champions return seven letterwinners, including four starters, from a squad that went 29-2 overall and 17-1 in league play, earning the No. 1 ranking in NCAA Div. II for the final month of the regular season. Toss in a pair of Div. I senior transfers, three returning redshirts and a pair of talented true freshmen, and it’s no surprise the Seawolves are a near-unanimous choice atop this year’s GNAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. “With our new additions and the proven strength of our returning players, we’re in great position to achieve big things again,” said 4th-year leader Ryan McCarthy, the 2014-15 GNAC and NCAA Div. II West Region Coach of the Year. “But this is a new season, and we haven’t earned anything yet. In fact, it will be a new test because we’re the team entering the season with a target on our back.” Leading one of the most veteran lineups in recent memory, the Seawolves have the luxury of a pair of All-America candidates in senior forward Megan Mullings – the GNAC Preseason Player of the Year – and junior point guard Kiki Robertson. A 6-footer from Glendale, Ariz., Mullings burst on the scene last year with averages of 13.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game, while shooting a school-record 60.4 percent from the floor. The JC transfer was an All-West Region and unanimous First Team All-GNAC choice, along with the GNAC Newcomer of the Year, as she helped the Seawolves rank No. 8 in D-II with 79.8 points per game. Meanwhile, Robertson has been a multidimensional force for the Seawolves in her first two seasons, earning the 2014-15 GNAC Defensive Player of the Year award and twice capturing Second Team All-GNAC honors. In boosting UAA to an NCAA Div. II-leading 15.0 steals per game a year ago, the Honolulu native averaged 8.2 points, 6.0 assists and 3.3 steals. The GNAC Tournament MVP was the only player in Div. II to rank in the top 10 nationally in both steals and assists, finishing eighth in each category. Among the seven seniors on the roster, guard Jenna Buchanan is one of just two who have not had the luxury of a redshirt, lending further to the team’s experience. Buchanan was an honorable mention All-GNAC choice after finishing as UAA’s third-leading scorer (11.3 ppg), along with 4.5 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.2 spg and 41.6 percent three-point accuracy.
LEFT: Junior point guard Kiki Robertson ranked eighth naƟonally in both steals and assists last season, earning GNAC Defensive Player of the Year honors. BELOW: Honorable menƟon All-GNAC senior guard Jenna Buchanan enters her final season as a 41.6 percent three-point shooter.
Entering the season with 131 career treys, Buchanan could threaten UAA’s career record of 191, along with fellow senior guard Jessica Madison, who already stands fourth with 142. Madison, another 5-8 shooting guard, comes into her final season with 890 points, on pace to become the 13th 1,000-point scorer at UAA. Last season the Washington native was UAA’s fourth-leading scorer with 10.5 ppg. The two other seniors with experience in Green & Gold, guards Adriana Dent and Christina Davis have both shown the ability to impact games. A former JC All-American and a lockdown defender, Dent averaged 4.8 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.8 apg and 3.1 spg in 19 games before breaking her foot on Jan. 24. With a healthy Dent and the return of 2014-15 redshirt Davis – who played in all 28 games for UAA’s 2013-14 NCAA Tournament squad – it should be difficult to find a backcourt to match UAA’s overall depth. Adding further to that deep lineup is newcomer Keiahnna Engel, who transfers back to her hometown school after three seasons at Div. I Boise State, where she played in 87 career games, including 39 starts. The former two-time Alaska Player of the Year at Dimond High School, Engel is a candidate to step into the starting lineup and contribute major minutes. Meanwhile, 6-3 senior center Dominique Brooks will become the first transfer from a Big Ten program to play for UAA, coming north from Penn State. A skilled shot-blocker, Brooks was a major force on the Trinity Valley (Texas) CC teams that went a combined 72-1 and won consecutive NJCAA national titles in 2013 and 2014. The other half of the junior class, 6-foot forward Alysha Devine brings a gritty, nononsense style of play, averaging 5.3 ppg,
4.0 rpg and 1.0 spg last year. Devine is also one of the squad’s top leaders, entering her second straight year as a co-captain. The final returning letterwinner is sophomore forward Sierra Afoa, who excelled in her key reserve role last year with 3.5 ppg and 3.6 ppg. One of four Dimond High products on the team, Afoa saw action in all 31 games as a redshirt freshman, logging 13 minutes per contest. A pair of true freshmen – Dimond’s Rohyn Huss and California guard Yazmeen Goo – and two redshirt freshmen round out the roster. Back with a year of practice under their belts, former Alaska prep stars Tara Thompson and Hannah Wandersee will make their debuts in 2015-16. Thompson was a multi-sport star at Dimond and brings a dead-eye shooting touch to the lineup, while Wandersee, who scored 1,000 points in a decorated prep career at Kodiak, could be ready to contribute big minutes in the post with her 6-1 frame.

Head Coach RYAN McCARTHY
O
ne of the brightest coaching talents in the NCAA ranks, Ryan McCarthy begins his fourth year at the helm of the Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball program in 2015-16, having taken the Seawolves to unprecedented heights in the previous campaign. An Anchorage native, McCarthy led his hometown program to a 29-2 record in 2014-15, along with the Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular-season and postseason tournament titles, and a No. 1 national ranking for the final four weeks of the regular season. He was voted GNAC Coach of the Year and the NCAA Div. II West Region Coach of the Year as the Seawolves set 16 school records, including best winning percentage (.935) and fewest losses. Playing his program’s signature up-tempo ‘Mayhem’ style, McCarthy’s squad led NCAA Div. II in steals per game for the second straight season (15.0 spg), while also pacing the nation in margin of victory (+19.8). Last year’s Seawolves also earned top-10 national ranks in scoring offense, turnover margin, rebound margin and offensive rebounding, and produced the GNAC’s Newcomer of the Year (Megan Mullings) and Defensive Player of the Year (Kiki Robertson). Since taking the reins in 2012, McCarthy’s teams have improved both their overall (17, 19, 29) and GNAC (11, 12, 17) victory totals each year -- a figure that doesn’t even include last season’s 67-61 exhibition road win over Pacific-12 Conference foe Utah. In 2013-14, McCarthy’s Seawolves finished 19-9 overall and made the NCAA playoffs for the first time under his leadership. UAA led the nation with 14.3 steals per game and was the highest-scoring team in the GNAC at nearly 80 points per contest. Despite a shortened roster, McCarthy’s first Seawolf squad rallied for a seven-game win streak to close the 2012-13 regular season and a third-place tie in the final GNAC standings at 11-7.

In three seasons under McCarthy, the Seawolves have produced six 1st- or 2ndteam All-GNAC honorees, the 2013 GNAC Freshman of the Year and last year’s Newcomer and Defensive POYs among their individual awards. Team-wise, UAA has posted victories over three NCAA Div. I teams, four NCAA Div. II nationally ranked teams, and perfect 6-0 marks against league rivals Seattle Pacific, Alaska Fairbanks and Western Oregon. Prior to UAA, McCarthy spent five seasons at GNAC rival Northwest Nazarene from 2007-12. At NNU, he served as an assistant, interim head coach and associate head coach, helping the Crusaders to two NCAA Tournament berths and a .633 win-
ning percentage during that stretch. After helping NNU to a 56-27 record as assistant coach from 2007-10, McCarthy stepped up as acting head coach in 2010-11 and led the Crusaders to a 14-13 record and a bid to the inaugural GNAC Tournament. In 2011-12, McCarthy was named associate head coach and helped pilot NNU to an 18-10 season. McCarthy played professionally for Tus Bramsche in Bramsche, Germany, in 200607, where he led the league in three-pointers and free throw percentage. He spent 2006 with the Central Oregon Hotshots of the International Basketball League, averaging 16 points, four assists and four rebounds per game. A 4-year starter and 3-year captain for the Crusaders from 2002-06, McCarthy was NNU’s Orrin Hills Male Athlete of the Year for 2005-06. He ranks third in program history with 256 treys over his career, setting the then-GNAC single-season record with 102 three pointers in 2005-06. Overall he posted 1,161 career points for the Crusaders. McCarthy graduated from NNU in 2006 with a B.S. in social science education. He and his wife Jenny have two young children, Donovan and Aurora.

NCAA Viola ons Summary During the transi on between women’s basketball coaches in the summer of 2012, the University of Alaska Anchorage discovered two student-athletes had been promised full scholarships when, in fact, they only received par al scholarships. Further research into this discrepancy revealed that unknown third par es accessed the student-athletes’ account informa on and used that informa on to make anonymous cash payments to their accounts. As a result, students believing that they had no indebtedness to the university because of scholarships, did not no ce when they had no indebtedness due to these payments that violated NCAA regula ons. The current women’s basketball staff had no involvement in this ac vity. UAA self-reported this viola on upon
discovery and ac vely par cipated in the NCAA’s inves ga on into it. Ul mately, the former women’s basketball coach admi ed to masterminding and execu ng the plan with the help of a volunteer assistant coach. The Penal es that UAA will serve are the following: I. Public Reprimand & Censure; II. Proba on from May 2014 – May 2016; III. $5,000 fine; IV. Vaca on of the 2011-12 regular season and conference tournaments in which ineligible studentathletes competed; V. Loss of 74% of a full scholarship for one academic year (this is being appealed); VI. Self-imposed external compliance audit in 2015.

2015-16 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES WOMEN’S BASKETBALL CHANCELLOR
TOM CASE
T
om Case, Lt. Gen. USAF (Ret.), became chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage in May 2011. Upon completing his Air Force career, he was appointed dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), where he served nearly six years before becoming president and chief operating officer of the state-owned, independently operated Alaska Aerospace
Corporation. Since returning to UAA as Chancellor, Case has focused on helping students succeed in their college goals. In 2011, UAA became one of only 11 universities nationwide to open a VetSuccess program on campus. UAA opened a Veteran’s Resource Center in 2013 to support its growing military and veteran student population. With support from Chancellor funds, UAA established the INNOVATE awards in 2011 to provide an incentive for innovative research. Seawolf Holdings was approved in 2012, establishing a pathway toward the commercialization of UAA research. In February 2013, ZENSOR, LLC became the first startup company incorporated in Alaska based upon research by UAA faculty. A second startup incorporated in June 2013. Currently, UAA has 31 invention disclosures with 12 patents pending. Under Case’s leadership, UAA opened a new Health Sciences Building, the new Alaska Airlines Center, and received funding to complete a new Engineering and Industry Building, slated to open in 2015. Married to his wife Susan for 45 years, they have a daughter Donna, sonin-law Daniel, and three grandchildren. A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Case received a Master of Science degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. He is a graduate of the National War College, the U.S. Army Command & General Staff College, the Air War College, and Emory University’s Advanced Management Program. He is an active member of the community, having served on the boards of the Alaska World Affairs Council and World Trade Center Alaska, and is immediate past president of Commonwealth North. He is an avid pilot and, of course, a great Seawolf fan.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
KEITH HACKETT
E
ntering his third year as Director of Athletics at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2015-16, Keith Hackett has positioned the Seawolves’ 13-sport NCAA program for unprecedented growth and success. Since arriving on Oct. 1, 2013, Hackett has overseen planning and logistics for the department’s transition into the $109 million Alaska Airlines Center – a state-of-the-art sports, community and concert venue that has transformed the UAA campus – along with a major expansion of the Seawolves’ hockey facilities at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Under his leadership, the department has developed a strategic plan that lists priorities, guiding the decision-making process and allowing the department to maintain focus on the Mission of Seawolf Athletics. A university and administrative management executive with 38 years of higher education experience, Hackett values connecting with the Anchorage community and building positive relationships with campus faculty, students, staff and U-Med District partners. In addition to reorganizing the internal management structure of the department, he has also entered into agreements with several national leaders in collegiate brand advancement. Hackett has developed partnerships with industry leader Spectra to manage the Alaska Airlines Center and UAA’s ticketing operations; Learfield Sports – the industry leader in media rights and sponsorships; and its newest partner, Basketball Travelers, to assist UAA in developing the GCI Great Alaska Shootout. Hackett has worked closely with corporate partners GCI and Alaska Airlines – and national TV partner CBS Sports Network – to bolster the vitality of UAA’s most visible event, the GCI Great Alaska Shootout. Other important areas that Hackett has targeted include external development, revenue generation, and enhancing the ‘Seawolf Fan Experience.’ Since Hackett’s arrival, over $3.2 million new dollars have been raised for facility projects and Student-Athlete support, total sales revenue has increased yearly by 36 percent, and significant enhancements have been made to the in-game fan experience and the level of service provided to season-ticket holders and Seawolf fans. Along with his behind-the-scenes contributions, UAA’s success in the competitive arena has also been apparent in Hackett’s first two years, with the Seawolf program finishing among the top 12 percent of all NCAA Div. II institutions in the Learfield Director’s Cup both times. All told during his tenure, the Seawolves’ D-II programs have qualified for NCAA postseason competition at a 90 percent rate, producing 42 All-Americans, four Academic All-Americans®, and seven Great Northwest Athletic Conference team titles. Even more impressively, UAA student-athletes have continued their tradition of academic excellence under Hackett’s leadership, combining for better than a 3.15 overall grade-point average in his of his two years at the helm. Hackett came to the Seawolves after working from 2004-13 as the senior associate AD for internal affairs at the University of Nevada, where he oversaw the football, track & field/cross country and baseball programs. Prior to his time in Reno, Hackett served as Executive VP for Special Projects and Director of the St. Gregory’s University College for Working Adults in Tulsa, Okla. He also served as Executive VP and Provost at St. Gregory’s from 1997-2004, and as VP for Admissions and Enrollment Management/Dean of Admissions for Law, Graduate and Undergraduate Admissions at Oklahoma City University from 1992-97. He worked at OCU as Dean of Students from 1986-89. From 1989-92, Hackett was the Associate AD at Northern Illinois University, where he oversaw eight Division I sports, including football and men’s and women’s basketball. The native of Nanuet, N.Y., began his college coaching and teaching career at Baker University in Baldwin, Kan., where he was head baseball coach from 1978-83 and assistant football coach from 1977-83. From there, he went on to coach offensive line for the football program at Div. I Memphis from 1983-85. Hackett earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Tarkio (Mo.) College in 1976 and an M.S. in education from the University of Kansas in 1979. He and his wife Patricia have been married for 39 years and have two adult children, Katie and James.
The Municipality of Anchorage A
laska’s most populous city is home to more than a few surprises. Aside from the human population of nearly 300,000, it is home to 1,500 moose and copious other wildlife. More than 50 glaciers stand in the nearby Chugach Mountains, one of the largest state parks in the nation. It’s the best mix of iconic Alaska and urban amenities. More than 135 miles of paved trails wind through the city, and salmon can be caught within the city limits. But Anchorage
also has a bustling downtown – complete with high-rises, nightlife and one of the nation’s fastest-growing culinary scenes. Anchorage is at the center of road, rail and air travel inside the state, making it a natural fit for visitors hoping to experience Alaska. Activities from the city range from bear viewing to glacier trekking, kayaking to gold panning. Pair adventure opportunities with Anchorage’s outstanding hotels, restaurants,
local breweries, and homegrown arts, and it’s a perfect place to explore no matter the season. Thanksgiving weekend is a special time for Anchorage. The GCI Great Alaska Shootout headlines a holiday weekend packed with events. The Town Square tree lighting, the Anchorage Museums craft fair and seasonal exhibits, and other big sporting events all combine to keep Anchorage jumping.

The State of Alaska A
laska is the largest state in the union — one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second largest state, Texas. Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than three million lakes. Alaska also boasts 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage, and an estimated 100,000 glaciers. The 49th State is home to Denali, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Also known as Mt. McKinley, the collosal mountain is located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, located 200 miles north of Anchorage, and can be seen from the city on clear days.

The University of Alaska Anchorage, academic home to more than 16,000 students, is an intersection for intellectual exploration, adventure and transformative experiences in and out of the classroom. With campuses throughout Southcentral Alaska, from the shores of majestic Prince William Sound to the verdant Matanuska and Susitna Valleys, UAA students experience a unique, hands-on education through academics, research, leadership opportunities and mentorship with our community partners in-state, across the country and globally. Surrounded by an environment that is both urban and wild, UAA is a gateway to innovative thinking, learning and exploration in a changing, modern world. UAA is rooted in the Alaska communities it serves and offers exciting pathways in 200 major areas of study, all at a great value.
UAA’s student-athletes, the beating heart of #SeawolfNation, compete in 13 NCAA collegiate sports. At the Division I level, UAA fields a men’s ice hockey team and a women’s gymnastics team. Competing in Division II are men’s and women’s basketball, cross country running, skiing and indoor and outdoor track & field teams, as well as our women’s volleyball team. True student-athletes, our Seawolves maintained a 3.17 GPA last year across all teams, while producing three conference titles, nine NCAA finishes, 18 All-Americans and placing 34th of 300 schools in the Learfield Sports Director’s Cup rankings. In September 2014, Seawolf Athletics cut the ribbon on its new home, the Alaska Airlines Center, a stateof-the-art 196,000-square-foot sporting event, training, sports medicine, special event and performance venue that is shared by the Anchorage community. The AAC is the new home for the GCI Great Alaska Shootout and has already played host to the NCAA Div. II Women’s Basketball West Regional Championships and the MPSF Gymnastics Championships.
