ACADEMICS The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 students through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the University’s mission in Alaska. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a minimum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.

SEAWOLF ATHLETICS

Nicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as members of NCAA Division I in men’s ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, and women’s cross country. UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic and the Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournament. Since joining the NCAA ranks in 1977, UAA has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 137 Seawolves have earned All-America honors, and UAA has produced 14 individual national champions since 1991. The Seawolves are coming off perhaps the most successful year in program history in 2008-09, boasting a second straight NCAA Semifinals appearances for women’s basketball, plus the top NCAA finishes ever for skiing, men’s track & field, and both women’s and men’s cross country. UAA also captured league titles in women’s basketball and men’s cross country as well as its first-ever Mountain Pacific Sports Federation gymnastics crown. Seawolves student-athletes have enjoyed unprecedented success in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 12 of the last 15 years.

2010 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEASON PREVIEW

deally for the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics program, the 2010 season will simply be a continuation of the 2009 campaign. A year ago, the Seawolves started slow but caught fire at midseason to produce one of the best overall seasons – including the program’s first-ever conference title – in school history. With all of his athletes returning this winter, 26th-year head coach Paul Stoklos has designs on a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation repeat and the continued growth of a program that turned Division I just last decade. Seniors Lauren Agostino, Courtney Williams and Meagan Byrne are among the nine returning letterwinners for UAA, which will also benefit from the return of sophomore Kelsey Fullerton, who redshirted in 2009. Agostino is back for her final go-round, having already established herself firmly in the UAA record books. Last year’s MPSF vault champion, the Virginian set a school record on that apparatus with a season average of 9.780, while posting the 4th-best beam (9.595) and 6th-best floor (9.668) averages ever for a Seawolf. Along with junior Leah Wilson, Agostino headlined a UAA vault rotation that was the best in school history with a 48.046 average. After nearly leaving the sport a year ago, Wilson returned to UAA last January and made an instant impact, eventually qualifying as an individual all-arounder for the NCAA West Regionals. The Canadian broke the UAA records for all-around (38.415) and beam (9.735) averages, earned All-MPSF honors on three events, and twice was named MPSF Gymnast of the Week. Williams, meanwhile, gives the Seawolves another versatile, dependable athlete to place anywhere in the lineup. With 23 all-around appearances, the Texan is poised for her best year as a senior. As a junior in 2009, Williams scored no lower than 9.525 on vault, while in 2008 she was an All-MPSF all-around performer. Fellow senior Byrne is a solid competitor on both beam and floor, while providing great depth on vault. The Southern California native gives Stoklos a built-in team leader, too, as this will be her third season as the team co-captain – an honor she is sharing this year with Fullerton. With juniors Kristy Boswell and Maria Puricelli, the Seawolves have yet more proven performers in the lineup. As a sophomore, Boswell was an All-MPSF selection on both bars and beam, while also filling in three times on floor. The New Jersey

Leah Wilson native tallied 9.8s in three of her final bars routines of 2009, including one that earned the MPSF title on that apparatus. Puricelli was incredibly consistent a year ago, giving the Seawolves solid showing on vault, bars and floor. Early in the 2009 season, she also stepped into an allaround role six times, topping out with a pair of 37.425 efforts. In addition to Fullerton, Stoklos returns three more sophomores – Shakea Sanders, Kaelei Spoor and Jackie Thomas – who all made significant impacts as rookies. Before redshirting last year because of a shoulder injury, Fullerton led the Seawolves with a 9.650 average on floor and had the team’s second-best vault average (9.571) as a freshman in 2008. The Texan also tied for the MPSF floor title in her first season.

Sanders returns after recording the ninth-best vault (9.613) and 14th-best floor (9.602) averages in UAA history as a freshman. The Federal Way, Wash., native finished fourth on both vault and floor at MPSFs, and posted a team season-best 9.825 three times on floor. In many respects, Spoor was the team’s most consistent performer throughout her first season, posting the third-best average on beam (9.427, good for All-MPSF honors) and fourth-best average on floor (9.429). The New Yorker was a major part of UAA’s midseason turnaround, scoring 9.475 or better on every routine in the final seven meets. Thomas will fill a key role in the lineup as the team’s bars specialist. She also caught stride at midseason, posting 9.35 or better in six of the final seven meets.

he only gymnastics coach the University of Alaska Anchorage has ever known, Paul Stoklos keeps taking the Seawolves to new heights as he embarks on his 26th season in 2010. Over the past seven seasons, Stoklos has overseen UAA’s transition from Division II to Division I, and boosted the team’s talent to its highest level ever. The 20 best team scores in program history have all come since 2004, including six of the top 10 marks in the 2009 season alone. Last season, Stoklos’ squad won its first-ever conference title when it captured the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Colorado Springs, and produced a six-meet winning streak during the second half of the year. Meanwhile, sophomore Leah Wilson became the 10th Seawolf ever to qualify as an all-arounder for the NCAA West

At the end of each season, Stoklos and his squad make adjustments to the training process which allows them to improve both in the gym and in the classroom. Team performance is important to Stoklos, who wants his gymnasts to think of their routines in terms of an overall team effort. Topping his list of student-athlete priorities, however, is academics, evidenced by the fact that his team consistently produces All-American Scholar certificates. Prior to coming to UAA, Stoklos served as a coach as an undergraduate and graduate assistant at the University of Arizona for seven years. He helped bring a fledgling gymnastics program from ground level to a national ranking in just four years. Stoklos was an excellent athlete in his own right, earning varsity letters in football, track and gymnastics in high school. He was a competitive skydiver at Arizona where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1981. An avid and experienced downhill and cross-country skier, Stoklos is a member of the Mt. Alyeska Ski Patrol during the winter months. He enjoys hiking, fishing, scuba diving, skydiving and is a rated private airplane pilot. Stoklos is also a longtime member of the Alaska Search and Rescue Dogs.

TAMI MONETTE Assistant Coach l 15th Season

n her 15th season as assistant coach for the Seawolves in 2010, Tami Monette has become an integral part of the program. Monette was voted the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Assistant Coach of the Year in 2009 for the third time, repeating the honor she shared in 2006 and won outright in 2005. Monette has an extensive background in gymnastics as a competitor, head coach, compulsory judge and club owner. She has served two stints as head coach for the Anchorage Gymnastics Association, from 1993-95 and from 1978-85. Monette currently serves as an age-group director at the state level. She is USA safety-certified and has served as a judge at levels five through seven. She has placed gymnasts on Region II teams to Nationals from 1985 through 1995.

ormer UAA gymnast Melissa Jabaay returns to Coach Paul Stoklos’ staff in 2010 as a student assistant coach. An accomplished dancer and choreographer, she will concentrate on the finer points with the Seawolves on floor exercise. After competing for the Seawolves in 1999, the Birmingham, Ala., native has pursued a professional performing career, working as a dancer for three seasons in various productions at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Va., and later becoming the dance supervisor in charge of casting, hiring, teaching and choreography. Jabaay (formerly Morgan) has performed in Australia, New Zealand and Italy as an Alabama Dance Ambassador and danced professionally in the Miss Alabama and Miss America Homecoming Productions. She is currently pursuing a degree from UAA in theatre with a dance emphasis. Jabaay and her husband Aaron have a baby daughter, Cathryn Elizabeth.

CHRIS VOLK Head Athletic Trainer l 15th Season

ead athletic trainer Chris Volk is in her 15th season with the UAA Athletic Department. Volk cares for the treatment and prevention of injuries to Seawolf student-athletes, and manages the overall operation of the department’s Sport Medicine office. A 1979 graduate of the University of Dayton with a bachelor’s degree in biology, Volk also earned a master’s degree in biology from UD in 1986. She is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. She and her husband Rick are the parents of three children — Megan, Cody and Casey.

AA graduate Nate Sagan is in his 11th year overall and his 10th as the primary media contact for Seawolf gymnastics. After internships at the University of California Berkeley and the University of Oregon, Sagan returned to his alma mater in 1999 and assumed head SID duties three years later. In addition to serving as the media liaison for UAA’s 11 intercollegiate sports, he is also responsible for the department’s publications and the GoSeawolves. com website. The Kansas City, Mo., native earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism and public communication from UAA in 1997, and he is a 1991 graduate of East Anchorage High School. He and his wife Christine are the parents of two adorable daughters, Petula and Daphne.

he Seawolves were golden in their silver anniversary season, capping a midseason turnaround with the program’s first-ever league title when they captured the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships, Mar. 20 in Colorado Springs. After scoring no higher than 187.400 through Feb. 2 with an injury-riddled lineup, UAA recovered to break the 190 mark in the final seven meets, stringing together six straight dual victories and finishing 7-9. In their final home meet, the Seawolves registered a 193.000 against Kentucky for the second-best score in program history. Junior Lauren Ago stino (vault) and Kristy Boswell (bars) won MPSF individual titles, while sophomore Leah Wilson broke UAA’s season allaround average record (38.415) and became the 10th Seawolf ever to qualify for the Div. THE MPSF ∙ SEAWOLF FACILITIES ∙ SEAWOLF MASCOT

he Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) was established in 1992 to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic and West Coast Conferences and other selected colleges and universities in the western United States, providing championship competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. In women’s gymnastics, the league is comprised of four institutions -- the University of Alaska Anchorage, UC Davis, Seattle Pacific and the U.S. Air Force Academy. The MPSF was originally formed to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affilia-

tion, to contain the costs of competition, and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. It has also served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. In 2006-2007, the Federation celebrated its 15th year of competition, and today the MPSF is more relevant than at any other time since its inception. As a testament to its viability, the federation continues to successfully ride the ever-changing wave of college sports by fostering contraction and expansion to meet the dynamic needs of its member institutions and conferences. Since its inception, MPSF teams have won more than 50 NCAA team championships and numerous individual titles as well. In 2009-10, the MPSF will again provide competition in nine Olympic sports while serving over 1,500 student-athletes and approximately 75 head coaches from 32 universities in 12 western states. All MPSF teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in men’s soccer, men’s and women’s water polo, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s gymnastics, women’s lacrosse and men’s volleyball. All MPSF champions are eligible to compete in NCAA Championships with MPSF men’s soccer, men’s and women’s water polo, and men’s volleyball champions earning automatic qualification into NCAA championship events.

Seawolf FACILITIES

AA hosts its home meets on campus in the 1,250-seat Wells Fargo Sports Complex. The gym, which has housed Seawolf gymnastics, basketball and volleyball since 1978, provides a comfortable atmosphere for both competitors and fans. Seawolf gymnasts also make use of the WFSC’s other facilities — weight room, fitness center, 25-meter pool, jogging track and sauna — for training and recreation. The Seawolves train off-campus at the Anchorage Gymnastics Association facility in Midtown. UAA gymnastis have exclusive use of the AGA gym for practice. The facility offers 12 competition beams, four sets of uneven bars and two spring floors, as well as a loose foam pit for vaulting, tumbling and bars. The gym includes almost 23,000 square feet of training space.

THE SEAWOLF

n the Seawolf, the University of Alaska Anchorage has one of the more unique mascots in collegiate sports. Originally nicknamed the Sourdoughs, UAA adopted the Seawolf moniker in 1977. The name Seawolf represents a mythical sea creature. According to the legend of the Seawolf, anyone fortunate enough to view it was subject to good luck. The exact nature or shape of the Seawolf, however, was left to the imagination and thus the creature has been depicted in many forms throughout the years. The Seawolf of today was introduced in 1985. Created by the Clark Mishler & Associates Company of Anchorage in cooperation with a University committee, it represents an adaptation of a more traditional Alaska totemic-like characterization of the mythical Seawolf.

Fran Ulmer

Chancellor – University of Alaska Anchorage

As cancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage, Fran Ulmer brings to

the position 30 years of experience of public policy in Alaska. Previously, Ulmer was a fellow at the Institute of Politics at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Public Policy at the Institute of Social and Economic Research. In the early 1980s, Ulmer served as the Mayor of Juneau, then a member of the Alaska House of Representatives (1986-1994) and in 1994, she became the first female Lieutenant Governor of Alaska. In that year, she was appointed to the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission by President Bill Clinton and served on this international board for 11 years. She has participated in numerous panels, task forces, commissions and forums as a speaker, moderator and panelist to address the intersection of science, economics, politics and policy. Ulmer currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the National Parks Conservation Association, the Advisory Board of the Union of Concerned Scientists and the Alaska Nature Conservancy Board. She has a BA in political science and economics and a Law Degree from the University of Wisconsin.

Dr. Steve Cobb

Director of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage

In nine seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic

department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways. The 2007-08 and 2008-09 campaigns were two of the most memorable in school history, highlighted by three Final Four appearances for Seawolf basketball teams (women twice, men once), and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s skiing, and men’s track & field. With UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, a planning phase is also under way for the construction of a new on-campus sports facility at UAA. He has also recently overseen several upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of the new gym floor and the construction of the new All-American/Academic All-American honors wall. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Classic hockey and Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State. Dr. Cobb and his wife Sandra reside in East Anchorage.

ith city boudaries that stretch to nearly the size of the state of Delaware, more than 275,000 people are lucky to call Anchorage home. On a global scale, Anchorage is located as far north as Helsinki, Finland, and as far west as Honolulu, Hawaii. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city (more than four times larger than the second-largest town), an international air crossroads, and the business and cultural center of the state. Almost 300 flights arrive daily at Anchorage International Airport. Anchorage is a recreational paradise as well, boasting more than 14,000 acres of parkland and nearly 300 miles of paved and wilderness biking, skiing and hiking trails. In addition, the city sports dozens of

lakes, softball, baseball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, and six scenic golf courses. Chugach State Park is located 15 minutes from downtown Anchorage. With 495,000 acres, Chugach is the third-largest state park in the United States and offers a variety of year-round recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, camping, cross country skiing and wildlife viewing. Due to the warming effects of the Pacific Ocean currents and protection from the Chugach Mountains, Anchorage is located in Alaska’s so-called banana belt. Anchorage’s climate resembles that of San Francisco in the summer (highs of 75 degrees) and a Rocky Mountain ski resort in the winter (lows of 20

laska is the largest state in the union — one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second largest state, Texas. Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes,, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than three million lakes. Alaska has 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage. The 49th State celerated is home to Mt. McKinley, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Mt. McKinley, located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, is over 200 miles north of Anchorage and can be seen from the city on clear days. Denali National Park is over six million acres and features great wildlife viewing and colorful wilderness expanses.

Salmon fishing is more than a pastime to Anchorage residents. Red and King Salmon can be caught from the many rivers and creeks that run through the city.
