2010-11 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEASON PREVIEW
L
ed by a proven trio of seniors and four more battle-tested letterwinners, the 2010-11 Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team has a solid foundation for success in Rusty Osborne’s seventh season as head coach. Mix in eight newcomers and a pair of returning redshirts, and the Seawolves could be set with the ingredients to whip up a postseason berth for the first time since their 2008 Final 4 run. “I think we have an excellent mix with this group,” said seventh-year head coach Rusty Osborne, who has accumulated a 11067 mark on the Seawolf bench. “We not only have talent at every position, but we have great leadership from all three of our seniors. They will be able to help the new players learn the system and maximize our team’s potential.” Osborne’s system revolves around defense and three-point accuracy – two areas where the Seawolves have excelled in recent years. Last season UAA led the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in scoring defense for the fifth straight campaign, and the team has finished in the top 10 in NCAA Div. II in terms of three-point percentage for four of the last five years. Leading the way on both ends of the court will be senior wing Brandon Walker, a returning first-team All-GNAC pick last year after averaging 15.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. The 6-3, 200-pounder scored in double figures in 22 of UAA’s last 25 games, including nine outings with 20 points or more. Despite a midseason threepoint slump as a junior, Walker has still managed to shoot 38 percent from long range and nearly 50 percent overall for his career. Along with Walker, the only other Seawolf to start all 27 games last year was senior forward Casey Robinson. After sitting out 2008-09 because of a knee injury, Robinson returned in full force for his junior season, averaging 12.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and knocking down a team-high 66 threepointers. The all-league honorable mention selection was a defensive force too, easily leading the Seawolves in charges taken. UAA’s third senior, Drew Robinson (no relation to Casey), is eager to show what he can do with a full, healthy season. As a transfer from Salt Lake CC last year, the point guard was a steady presence in the non-conference portion of the schedule before missing nine games at midseason with a stress fracture. Luckily, Robinson seemed to hit his stride at season’s end, putting up 17 points in a win over Alaska Fairbanks and notching 12 points in the season finale victory over 9th-ranked Seattle Pacific. Osborne’s squad features a fourth returning starter in sophomore center Liam Gibcus. As a rookie, the 6-10, 245-pound Australian

averaged 3.9 points and 2.3 rebounds, while shooting the second-best field goal percentage (.512) for a freshman in Seawolf history. Also returning from last season is another pair of Aussies – guards Steve White and Bryce Arnott. White, a 6-0 junior, showed steady improvement throughout his second season, playing 13.4 minutes per game and shooting a steady 48 percent from the field. Arnott, meanwhile, appeared in all but one game, logging 12.5 minutes and averaging 2.3 points. Both will be in the mix for more minutes in the backcourt this year. UAA’s final returning letterwinner returns from the 2008-09 season and will not be eligible until late December, but it will be a huge addition to get Anchorage native Lonnie Ridgeway back into the fold. After
playing in 31 games on UAA’s Final 4 team in 2007-08, the 6-3, 200-pound guard broke out during his sophomore campaign for 9.6 ppg and 3.7 rpg, scoring double figures on 14 occasions. Also returning to the Green & Gold after spending two seasons away is junior guard Phillip Hearn. The former West Anchorage High star redshirted for UAA’s Final 4 squad before transferring briefly to fellow D-II program Christian Brothers. After attending UAA last year, Hearn is now back with the Seawolves, and he should bring an added weapon with a 6-6, 200-pound frame and a deadly jump shot. Another Alaskan, Nome’s Jesse

Blandford, will try to crack the backcourt lineup after redshirting last year. Among the newcomers, junior center Taylor Rohde comes to UAA as the program’s first-ever transfer from a “power” conference, having spent his first two seasons at Arizona State. The 2008 Arizona Gatorade and Phoenix Metro Player of the Year had a legendary career at Pinnacle High School, where he averaged 29.5 points and 12.0 rebounds as a senior and set at least 15 school records. Like Casey Robinson, the 6-9, 255pound Rohde also has a knack for defense, leading ASU in charges taken last year. Joining Rohde up front will be fellow junior transfers Matt Peterson (6-7, 265), Jeremy Jones (6-7, 190) and Chris Weitzel (6-7, 245). Peterson, from Whatcom (Wash.) stars last season. Weitzel, a teammate of Peterson’s at Mt. Hood, was a highly recruited football star coming out of high school and should provide a physical force in the paint for the Seawolves. At small forward, sophomore Chris Plooy returns to his hometown after one year at Green River (Wash.) CC, where he averaged 13.4 points and 6.0 rebounds. The 6-5, 200-pounder was a first-team all-state player as a senior at Dimond High, helping the Lynx to the 2009 Alaska 4A state title. In the backcourt, junior transfer Mario Gill also brings impressive credentials. At Eastern Arizona College, the 6-2, 180-pounder averaged double-figure scoring in both his freshman and sophomore seasons, while shooting nearly 40 percent from three-point range. He showed off his athleticism as well, averaging nearly six rebounds per game
from the off-guard position. As a prep star in Portland, Ore., Gill was the 2008 Portland Interscholastic League’s Player of the Year and a first-team all-state honoree at Wilson High School. A pair of true freshmen from Alaska will also don the Green & Gold in 2010-11 as Haines’ Kyle Fossman and Dimond’s Travis Thompson make their collegiate debuts. Fossman was the 2010 Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year last season, leading his team to its second Class 3A state title in three years with averages of 26.7 points, 6.6 assists, 5.6 rebounds and 3.0 steals. Thompson was the Alaska 4A Player of the Year, averaging 20 points, six assists and five rebounds per game before suffering a seasonending broken hand in the region playoffs. He also teamed with Plooy on Dimond’s 2009 state-title squad.

fter leading Alaska Anchorage to five straight winning seasons — including NCAA Tournaments in 2006, 2007 and 2008 — Rusty Osborne has clearly established himself among the top coaches in both Division II basketball and school history. Under Osborne’s leadership, UAA has gone 99-51 over the past five seasons, including victories over four Division I teams and 10 nationally ranked D-II teams. In 2007-08, Osborne earned the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Coach-ofthe-Year award as UAA posted the best record in school history (29-6), won its first GNAC title, and advanced to the Div. II Final Four for the first time in 20 years. The Seawolves produced a pair of AllAmericans as they rose as high as No. 4 in the national polls and earned their first-ever No. 1 NCAA Tournament seed. In the four of the last five campaigns, Osborne’s teams have finished in the top 10 of the NCAA Div. II national stats in both three-point and free-throw percent-

Since coming to UAA, Osborne has been involved in organizing Seawolf Outreach games in Barrow, Kotzebue, Kenai and Fort Richardson. He is also the director of the Sullivan Arena Jumpshot Basketball Camp and has put on many clinics in rural Alaska. Before moving to the collegiate ranks, Osborne worked for one year as an assistant at Hyde Park Baptist High School in Austin, Texas, helping the Panthers to a 36-8 finish and a state championship. Osborne prepped at Alief-Elsik High in Houston, where he was a two-time alldistrict selection. Collegiately, he lettered his freshman season at Mary Hardin-Baylor, and redshirted at Eastern New Mexico. THE GREAT NORTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
S
tretching from Alaska to Oregon to Montana – and now to Canada – the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has quickly established itself as one of the most successful leagues in the NCAA Division II ranks. Founded in 2001 as a 10-team league, the GNAC this year returns to its original membership number with the addition of Simon Fraser of Burnaby, British Columbia. Along with Montana State Billings, which joined the league in 2007, Simon Fraser joins original GNAC members Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Fairbanks, Central Washington, Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin’s, Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and Western Washington in 2010-11. In the last three years alone, the GNAC has produced one national team title (2009 SPU women’s soccer), three national runner-up finishes, three NCAA Final 4 basketball appearances (all by UAA’s men and women), and top-5 NCAA women’s cross country placings by both SPU and UAA in 2009. UAA sponsors seven of the GNAC’s 14 sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

SEAWOLF FACILITIES
T
he Seawolves host their home matches on campus in the 1,000-seat Wells Fargo Sports Complex. The gym, which has housed Seawolf volleyball, basketball and gymnastics since 1978, provides a comfortable atmosphere for both competitors and fans. Along with a refurbished playing surface in 2010, the gym recently received a facelift with the addition of new plastic bleachers to replace the former wooden seats. Seawolf basketball players also make use of the WFSC’s other facilities — weight room, fitness center, 25-meter pool, jogging track and sauna — for training and recreation. At Thanksgiving, the Seawolves move their home to the 8,700-

DR. STEVE COBB
Director of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage
In 10 years at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways. The 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 campaigns were three of the most memorable in school history, highlighted by three Final Four appearances for Seawolf basketball teams (women twice, men once), and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country, skiing (three times), and men’s track & field (twice). With UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, a planning phase is also under way for the construction of a new on-campus sports facility at UAA. He has also recently overseen several upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of a new gym floor and bleachers and the construction of the All-American/Academic All-American honors wall. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Hockey Classic and Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State. Dr. Cobb and his wife Sandra reside in East Anchorage.

MUNICIPALITY OF
ANCHORAGE W
ith city boundaries that stretch to nearly the size of the state of Delaware, more than 275,000 people are lucky to call Anchorage home. On a global scale, Anchorage is located as far north as Helsinki, Finland, and as far west as Honolulu, Hawaii. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city (more than four times larger than the second-largest town), an international air crossroads, and the business and cultural center of the state. Almost 300 flights arrive daily at Anchorage International Airport. Anchorage is a recreational paradise as well, boasting more than 14,000 acres of parkland and nearly 300 miles of paved and wilderness biking, skiing and hiking trails. In addition, the city sports dozens of
lakes, softball, baseball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, and six scenic golf courses. Chugach State Park is located 15 minutes from downtown Anchorage. With 495,000 acres, Chugach is the third-largest state park in the United States and offers a variety of year-round recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, camping, cross country skiing and wildlife viewing. Due to the warming effects of the Pacific Ocean currents and protection from the Chugach Mountains, Anchorage is located in Alaska’s so-called banana belt. Anchorage’s climate resembles that of San Francisco in the summer (highs of 75 degrees) and a Rocky Mountain ski resort in the winter (lows of 20

STATE OF
ALASKA A
laska is the largest state in the union — one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second largest state, Texas. Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes,, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than three million lakes. Alaska has 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage. The 49th State celebrated is home to Mt. McKinley, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Mt. McKinley, located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, is over 200 miles north of Anchorage and can be seen from the city on clear days. Denali National Park is over six million acres and features great wildlife viewing and colorful wilderness expanses.
degrees). Low humidity also contributes to Anchorage’s comfortable climate. The residents of the city share the Anchorage bowl with more than 1,000 Moose, which are often seen on UAA’s campus throughout the year. In addition, black bears, grizzlies, foxes, wolves, lynx, wolverines, Dall sheep and bald eagles are just some of the animals that make their homes here. Salmon fishing is more than a pastime to Anchorage residents. Red and King Salmon can be caught from the many rivers and creeks that run through the city.

ACADEMICS The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 students through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the University’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addiction Studies, the Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a minimum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.

SEAWOLF ATHLETICS
Nicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as members of NCAA Division I in men’s ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, and women’s cross country. UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic and the Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournament. Since joining the NCAA ranks in 1977, UAA has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 150 Seawolves have earned All-America honors, and UAA has produced 15 individual national champions since 1991. The Seawolves are coming off perhaps the most successful year in program history in 2009-10, including a fourth straight NCAA appearance for women’s basketball. The women’s cross country team recorded its first-ever GNAC and West Region titles before finishing a program-best 5th place at the NCAAs, while the volleyball team completed the best season in school history with a 23-8 overall record and its first GNAC title and first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. Seawolves student-athletes have enjoyed unprecedented success in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 13 of the last 16 years.
