2010-11 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEASON PREVIEW

A

fter four memorable seasons under head coach Tim Moser, the Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball program has firmly established itself as one of the best in NCAA Div. II. Although the Seawolves saw their twoyear reign as West Region champions come to an end last year, UAA still returned to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight time, won its fourth straight Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout, and posted an overall record of 24-5. Now it will be up to a handful of returnees and a dozen talented newcomers to continue the tradition of success in 2010-11. “A few of our upperclassmen have big-game experience, having played in the Shootout and deep into the NCAA Tournament, but it will take some time for the majority of our newcomers to become accustomed to that level of intensity,” said Moser, who is 108-20 at the Seawolf helm. “Still, with our nucleus and good leadership from our veterans, I’m confident this group can put forth the effort to be playoff contenders again.” Although the Seawolves do not return a first- or second-team All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference performer from last season, that doesn’t mean they are devoid of talent. Junior post Hanna Johansson was an honorable mention All-GNAC selection in 2009-10, and Moser expects her to be one of the best players in the league this time around. As a sophomore, the 6-2 Swede averaged 9.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, improving to 12.4 ppg and 6.0 rpg after the calendar changed to January. UAA’s career field-goal percentage leader (.549) paced the GNAC last year at 54.7 percent and also ranked fourth in steals (2.0 spg). Along with Johansson, UAA’s trio of seniors – Nikki Aden, Sarah Herrin and Kaitlin McBride – will provide a solid foundation. Aden, a 5-9 wing, is the team’s lone four-year senior and enters the season with the second-most career victories (83) in a Seawolf uniform. The Portland, Ore., native played a key reserve role on both of UAA’s Final 4 teams in 2007-08 and 2008-09, and last year she started all 29 games, averaging 9.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists and shooting a school-record 86.2 percent from the free-throw line. Herrin, a 5-8 guard from Nikiski, may be pound-for-pound one of the toughest players ever to don the Green & Gold. The former transfer from Alaska Fairbanks made her Seawolf debut last season, putting up

4.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and shooting 34.6 percent from long range while playing 14.0 minutes per contest. At point guard, McBride returns with valuable experience after starting the final 11 games last winter in place of the injured Kiki Taylor. In addition to her averages of 3.3 ppg and 2.1 rpg, the Bothell, Wash., native delivered a 1.64-to-1 assist-turnover ratio and showed off a smooth midrange jumper. Moser would have a fourth senior in Torle Nenbee, but the 5-9 wing suffered a knee injury in August and will take an injury redshirt season. A pair of Alaskans rounds out the returnees as redshirt sophomores Alysa Horn and Jordan Martin will look to increase their playing time. Horn, a 6-0 forward from Kodiak, has been impressive in preseason

drills, while Martin, from East Anchorage High School, brings 12 games of experience from last season. Six JC transfers and six freshmen make up the newcomers. A 6-footer, Kaylie Robison is a true presence in the middle who earned AllScenic West Athletic Conference honors at College of Eastern Utah with 16.9 points, 9.3 rebounds and a league-best 1.2 blocks per game. Tijera Mathews, who at 5-10 can play shooting guard or either forward position, was also a first-team all-league pick, averaging 11.8 ppg, 6.4 rpg and 2.1 assists per game at Antelope Valley College. At the wing position, Francesca De Angelis was the leading scorer in the Western

State Conference with 20.2 ppg for Santa Barbara CC in 2009-10, earning second-team all-state honors. Along with Matthews and De Angelis, Tanee’ Denson-Griffin is one of five newcomers from Southern California, where she put up balanced numbers in helping San Bernardino Valley to consecutive Foothill Conference titles. Sasha King and Siedah Wilson, meanwhile, will battle for playing time at point guard. An Oklahoma native, King comes to UAA after helping Hutchinson (Kan.) CC to 60 victories over the past two seasons, dishing 4.2 assists and making 1.7 steals per game last year. Wilson was a two-time AllFoothill League pick, teaming with Mathews to help Antelope Valley to a 25-6 record in 2009-10.

Head Coach TIM MOSER

I

n just four seasons as head coach at Alaska Anchorage, Tim Moser has left a lasting impression on the UAA faithful and elevated the Seawolf program among the elite in NCAA Division II women’s basketball. After guiding UAA to consecutive Final Four appearances in 2008 and 2009, Moser took his team back to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season. The 200910 Seawolves went 24-5 overall, including a win over Big East member Cincinnati, and captured the program’s fourth straight Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout title. In Moser’s tenure, only three other D-II women’s programs have posted as many victories as the Seawolves and only three have been ranked in the WBCA/ESPN Top 25 Coaches’ Poll for as many consecutive weeks (48). In fact, the Seawolves have dropped no lower than No. 18 in the last three years — the only club in D-II to make that claim. Two years ago, Moser’s squad won 31 games — a record for all UAA sports for the second straight year — and made it a ‘three-peat’ for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference’s Player-of-the-Year and Newcomer-of-the-Year awards, while Moser was voted the league’s Coach of the Year for the second time in three years. Moser also received the 2009 WBCA Div. II West Region Coach-of-the-Year honor as UAA captured a share of its first conference title in 20 years. During Moser’s tenure, the Seawolves are 65-3 at home, 10-4 in the NCAA Tournament and 8-0 against D-I opponents. As a D-II rookie coach in 2006-07, Moser was voted GNAC Coach of the Year after leading the Seawolves to the then-second-best record in program history (23-6), including the team’s first NCAA Tournament victory in seven seasons. UAA recorded the 8th-biggest turnaround in D-II from 2005-06 to ’06-07 as he took over a program that had averaged just 10.7 wins the previous six years. A former Seawolf player, Moser returned

He coached the OJC men exclusively the final two seasons, after leading the men and women simultaneously the previous six years. In six seasons with the Lady Rattlers, Moser compiled a 137-41 record and won five straight conference championships from 1998-02. With the men, he registered a 172-68 mark, winning four league titles. Moser’s student-athletes at OJC compiled an even more incredible record of success in the classroom, with the men ranking among the nation’s top five teams in terms of gradepoint average for five straight years, and the women holding a top-10 academic rank for six years in a row. During Moser’s 14 combined seasons as head coach, the Rattlers produced 15 Academic All-Americans, 52 Academic All-Region performers, and all but one player graduated.

Under Moser’s leadership, the Seawolves have won four straight Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootouts and posted a 10-4 record in NCAA Tournament play.

GREAT NORTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

S

tretching from Alaska to Oregon to Montana – and now to Canada – the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has quickly established itself as one of the most successful leagues in the NCAA Division II ranks. Founded in 2001 as a 10-team league, the GNAC this year returns to its original membership number with the addition of Simon Fraser of Burnaby, British Columbia. Along with Montana State Billings, which joined the league in 2007, Simon Fraser joins original GNAC members Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Fairbanks, Central Washington, Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin’s, Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and Western Washington in 2010-11. In the last three years alone, the GNAC has produced one national team title (2009 SPU women’s soccer), three national runner-up finishes, three NCAA Final 4 basketball appearances (all by UAA’s men and women), and top-5 NCAA women’s cross country placings by both SPU and UAA in 2009. UAA sponsors seven of the GNAC’s 14 sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

SEAWOLF FACILITIES

T

he Seawolves host their home matches on campus in the 1,000-seat Wells Fargo Sports Complex. The gym, which has housed Seawolf volleyball, basketball and gymnastics since 1978, provides a comfortable atmosphere for both competitors and fans. Along with a refurbished playing surface in 2010, the gym recently received a facelift with the addition of new plastic bleachers to replace the former wooden seats. Seawolf basketball players also make use of the WFSC’s other facilities — weight room, fitness center, 25-meter pool, jogging track and sauna — for training and recreation. At Thanksgiving, the Seawolves move

their home to the 8,700-seat Sullivan Arena in Midtown Anchorage, where they host the annual Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout.

U

AA hosts one of college basketball’s most prestigious tournaments every Thanksgiving week when it brings three Division I squads north for the Carrs/ Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. For the 31st women’s tourney in 2010, the Seawolves will welcome Kent State, San Jose State and Washington. With six Shootout championships, Division II UAA has established an unprecedented level of success against its D-I competition, including a current string of four straight titles. SEAWOLF GIANT KILLERS

Beginning with a 74-52 victory over Nevada in 1980, the Seawolves have a strong tradition of success against the giants of NCAA Division I basketball. UAA has a total of 33 wins over 30 programs, including such powers as Clemson, Wake Forest and Santa Clara. After beating Cincinnati to win their fourth straight Shootout title, the Seawolves have a current eight-game win streak against D-I foes, including their largest-ever win over a D-I club in last year’s 89-47 thrashing of Coastal Carolina.

UAA’s Kiki Taylor prepares to make a critical steal from Syracuse’s Chandrea Jones late in UAA’s 58-57 victory in 2008.

DR. STEVE COBB

Director of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage

In 10 seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways. The 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 campaigns were three of the most memorable in school history, highlighted by three Final Four appearances for Seawolf basketball teams (women twice, men once), and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country, skiing (three times), and men’s track & field (twice). With UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, a planning phase is also under way for the construction of a new on-campus sports facility at UAA. He has also recently overseen several upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of a new gym floor and bleachers and the construction of the All-American/Academic All-American honors wall. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Hockey Classic and Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State. Dr. Cobb and his wife Sandra reside in East Anchorage.

ACADEMICS The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 students through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the University’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addiction Studies, the Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a minimum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.

SEAWOLF ATHLETICS

Nicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as members of NCAA Division I in men’s ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, and women’s cross country. UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic and the Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournament. Since joining the NCAA ranks in 1977, UAA has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 150 Seawolves have earned All-America honors, and UAA has produced 15 individual national champions since 1991. The Seawolves are coming off perhaps the most successful year in program history in 2009-10, including a fourth straight NCAA appearance for women’s basketball. The women’s cross country team recorded its first-ever GNAC and West Region titles before finishing a program-best 5th place at the NCAAs, while the volleyball team completed the best season in school history with a 23-8 overall record and its first GNAC title and first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. Seawolves student-athletes have enjoyed unprecedented success in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 13 of the last 16 years.

MUNICIPALITY OF

ANCHORAGE W

ith city boudaries that stretch to nearly the size of the state of Delaware, more than 275,000 people are lucky to call Anchorage home. On a global scale, Anchorage is located as far north as Helsinki, Finland, and as far west as Honolulu, Hawaii. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city (more than four times larger than the second-largest town), an international air crossroads, and the business and cultural center of the state. Almost 300 flights arrive daily at Anchorage International Airport. Anchorage is a recreational paradise as well, boasting more than 14,000 acres of parkland and nearly 300 miles of paved and wilderness biking, skiing and hiking trails. In addition, the city sports dozens of

lakes, softball, baseball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, and six scenic golf courses. Chugach State Park is located 15 minutes from downtown Anchorage. With 495,000 acres, Chugach is the third-largest state park in the United States and offers a variety of year-round recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, camping, cross country skiing and wildlife viewing. Due to the warming effects of the Pacific Ocean currents and protection from the Chugach Mountains, Anchorage is located in Alaska’s so-called banana belt. Anchorage’s climate resembles that of San Francisco in the summer (highs of 75 degrees) and a Rocky Mountain ski resort in the winter (lows of 20

laska is the largest state in the union — one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second largest state, Texas. Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than three million lakes. Alaska has 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage. The 49th State is home to Mt. McKinley, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Mt. degrees). Low humidity also contributes to Anchorage’s comfortable climate. The residents of the city share the Anchorage bowl with more than 1,000 Moose, which are often seen on UAA’s campus throughout the year. In addition, black bears, grizzlies, foxes, wolves, lynx, wolverines, Dall sheep and bald eagles are just some of the animals that make their homes here. Salmon fishing is more than a pastime to Anchorage residents. Red and King Salmon can be caught from the many rivers and creeks that run through the city.
