2015 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEASON PREVIEW
2015 ALASKA ANCHORAGE GYMNASTICS

W
ith a sparkling new training and competition facility and the Seawolves’ most veteran squad in several seasons, Alaska Anchorage gymnastics fans have good reason for optimism entering the 2015 campaign and beyond. The Seawolves return 10 letterwinners and one redshirt from last year’s team -- including three former NCAA Regional qualifiers -- along with four talented freshmen to compose the roster. “We have been dependent on a heavy contribution from freshmen the last two years but now we have a proven bunch of returners who can put up quality scores and take the pressure off the young ones,” said UAA head coach Paul Stoklos, who has piloted the program through its 31-year existence. The team’s only senior and 4th-year competitor is co-captain Morgan Cook, who has 16 career all-arounds to her credit. The 2012 NCAA Regional qualifier put up a 38.025 average last year to lead the team. Meanwhile, five accomplished juniors will take the floor, including former NCAA qualifiers M’rcy Matsunami (2013) and Stefany Bryan (2014). Matsunami delivered a record-setting freshman campaign before struggling with injuries last season, but the Nebraskan is healthy again and poised to top her careerhigh of 38.750. Bryan, a Seattle native, was All-MPSF on bars and all-around last year and carries a career-high of 38.475. The Seawolves’ European duo of juniors Marie-Sophie Boggasch (Germany) and Simone Penker (Austria) is also back and stronger than ever, with Penker having competed for her national team at the 2014 World Championships in China in October. Boggasch brings career-highs of 9.875 on vault and 9.725 on bars. They will be joined by the newly wed Sariaye (Jensen) Fishburn, who is coming off a redhirt season and looks to push for time on floor and vault. After being baptized by fire as rookies, this year’s sophomore class is ready to make another giant leap, led by team co-captiain Nicole Larkin. A capable allarounder, the Kennewick, Wash., product is especially skilled on bars, averaging 9.537 in 2014. UAA should also get valuable contributions from fellow West Coast natives Kelsy Konkright (Yakima, Wash.), Brice Mizell (Mill City, Ore.), and Julia York (Mission Viejo, Calif.), who both excelled on vault and floor last year. York was

M’rcy Matsunami an All-MPSF performer on vault with a team-best 9.645 regional qualifying score. Kallie Randolph, the team’s only local product (Polaris K-12/Anchorage Gym. Assoc.), was a standout on floor exercise as a rookie, earning All-MPSF honors and ranking No. 5 all-time at UAA with a 9.682 average. The freshmen bring a wide variety of skills and are ready to contribute primarily as specialists. Stoklos says Oregon native Kendra Daniels is already one of the team’s top balance beam performers, while Canadian Madeleine Arbuckle
(Winnipeg, Maniotba) has shown good skills on vault and beam. Minnesotan Emily Ramberg will push for time on three events -- vault, beam and floor -- and Nevada native Morgan Ross will try to crack the lineup on vault and floor. Along with home meets against Winona State and Centenary, the Seawolves will open their new home at the Alaska Airlines Center by hosting the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships for the first time, Mar. 21.

PAUL STOKLOS Head Coach 31st Season
T
he only gymnastics coach the University of Alaska Anchorage has ever known, Paul Stoklos keeps taking the Seawolves to new heights as he embarks on his 31st season in 2015. Stoklos has overseen UAA’s transition from Division II to Division I over the past decade, boosting the team’s talent to its highest level ever. The 20 best team scores in program history have all come since 2004, including eight of the top nine marks since 2008. In 2009, Stoklos’ squad won its first-ever conference title when it captured the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Colorado Springs. Individually, Stoklos has qualified 14 Seawolf gymnasts to the NCAA West Regional all-around competition – including current squad members M’rcy Matsunami and Stefany Bryan – and THE STOKLOS FILE produced nine MPSF Hometown: Brookfield, Wis. event titlists. Educa on: B.S., General Studies, Stoklos’ gymnasts have Univ. of Arizona, 1981; also produced in the classM.S., Exercise Science, room, topping the MPSF Arizona, 1984 All-Academic Team in Head Coaching Achievements 2010 with 10 honorees (UAA, 1985-present) and finishing eighth in the Has coached... nation with a 3.58 overall 3 USAG Na onal Champions (5 tles) team GPA in 2013. 12 All-Americans (39 awards) From the program’s 13 NCAA West Regional Qualifiers inception in 1985 until 37 Div. II Academic All-Americans becoming a full-fledged 2004 MPSF Coach of the Year Division I program in 2005 MPSF Co-Coach of the Year 2004, Stoklos’ program 2009 MPSF Champions produced three national champions, 12 AllAmericans and 37 Academic All-Americans at the Division II level. Success in recent seasons has come from a continued refinement of the UAA program. At the end of each season, Stoklos and his squad make adjustments to the training process which allows them to improve both in the gym and in the classroom. Team performance is important to Stoklos, who wants his gymnasts to think of their routines in terms of an overall team effort. Topping his list of student-athlete priorities, however, is academics, evidenced by the fact that his team consistently produces All-American Scholar certificates. Prior to coming to UAA, Stoklos served as a coach as an undergraduate and graduate assistant at the University of Arizona for seven years. He helped bring a fledgling gymnastics program from ground level to a national ranking in just four years. Stoklos was an excellent athlete in his own right, earning varsity letters in football, track and gymnastics in high school. He was a competitive skydiver at Arizona where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1981. An avid and experienced downhill and cross-country skier, Stoklos is a member of the Mt. Alyeska Ski Patrol during the winter months. He enjoys hiking, fishing, scuba diving, skydiving and is a rated private airplane pilot. Stoklos is also a longtime member of the Alaska Search and Rescue Dogs.
TAMI MONETTE Assistant Coach 20th Season
I
n her 20th season as assistant coach for the Seawolves in 2015, Tami Monette has become an integral part of the program. Monette was voted the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Assistant Coach of the Year in 2009 for the third time, repeating the honor she shared in 2006 and won outright in 2005. Monette has an extensive background in gymnastics as a competitor, head coach, compulsory judge and club owner. She has served two stints as head coach for the Anchorage Gymnastics Association, from 1993-95 and from 1978-85. Monette currently serves as an age-group director at the state level. She is USA safety-certified and has served as a judge at levels five through seven. She has placed gymnasts on Region II teams to Nationals from 1985 through 1995.

he Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) was established in 1992 to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic and West Coast Conferences and other selected colleges and universities in the western United States, providing championship competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. In women’s gymnastics, the league expanded back to six institutions in 2014 as former members Sacramento State and San Jose State rejoined Air Force, Alaska Anchorage, UC Davis and Seattle Pacific. The MPSF was originally formed to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation, to contain the costs of competition, and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. It has also served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. In 2014-15, the Federation is celebrating its 23rd year of competition, and today the MPSF is more relevant than at any other time since its inception. This year the MPSF will again provide competition in 10 Olympic sports while serving 93 teams from 38 universities in nine western states. All MPSF teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in men’s and women’s water polo, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, women’s lacrosse, and men’s volleyball. MPSF team champions are eligible to compete in the NCAA Championships with men’s and women’s water polo, men’s volleyball, and women’s lacrosse champions earning automatic qualification. In 2013-14, MPSF teams won four NCAA team championship titles, extending the streak to 10 straight years achieving such a feat. USC men’s water polo, Stanford women’s water polo, and Oregon men’s and women’s indoor track & field brought the MPSF’s total to 76 NCAA titles since the first season of competition in 1992-93.

THE SEAWOLF
I
n the Seawolf, the University of Alaska Anchorage has one of the more unique mascots in collegiate sports. Originally nicknamed the Sourdoughs, UAA adopted the Seawolf moniker in 1977. The name Seawolf represents a mythical sea creature. According to the legend of the Seawolf, anyone fortunate enough to view it was subject to good luck. The exact nature or shape of the Seawolf, however, was left to the imagination and thus the creature has been depicted in many forms throughout the years. The Seawolf of today was introduced in 1985. Created by the Clark Mishler & Associates Company of Anchorage in cooperation with a University committee, it represents an adaptation of a more traditional Alaska totemic-like characterization of the mythical Seawolf.

KEITH HACKETT
ntering his second year as Director of Athletics at the University of Alaska Anchorage, Keith Hackett has positioned the Seawolves’ 13-sport NCAA program for unprecedented growth and success as a new era begins in 2014-15. Since arriving on Oct. 1, 2013, Hackett has overseen the planning and logistics for the department’s transition into the $109 million Alaska Airlines Center – a state-of-the-art sports, community and concert venue that will transform the UAA campus – along with expanded hockey facilities at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Under his leadership, the department has developed an official strategic plan that will guide the decision-making process and allow the department to maintain a focus on the mission of Seawolf Athletics. A university and administrative management executive with 37 years of higher education experience, Hackett values connecting with the Anchorage community, and building positive relationships with campus faculty, students, staff and U-Med District partners. In addition to reorganizing the internal management structure of the department, he has also entered into agreements with several national leaders in collegiate brand advancement, developing partnerships with Global Spectrum to manage the Alaska Airlines Center, Front Row Marketing to oversee corporate partnerships, and Paciolan for ticketing. Along with his behind-the-scenes contributions, UAA’s success in the competitive arena was also apparent in Hackett’s first year. In 201314, the Seawolves not only finished 16th of 315 institutions nationally in the NCAA Div. II Learfield Director’s Cup, but also produced 25 All-Americans, nine NCAA Championships team qualifications and four Great Northwest Athletic Conference team titles, while UAA studentathletes combined for a 3.18 overall grade-point average. Hackett came to UAA after working from 2004-13 as the senior associate AD for internal affairs at the University of Nevada, where he oversaw the football, track & field/cross country and baseball programs. In addition to his day-to-day responsibilities with specific teams, Hackett was involved with donor relations and major gifts, budget, human and physical resource management, and alumni and community relations at Nevada. As a key member of the Wolf Pack’s senior leadership team, he was responsible for oversight of all athletics department capital projects, development of the department’s first athletic facilities master plan, and event management for all home contests. Prior to his time in Reno, Hackett served as Executive Vice President for Special Projects and was Director of the St. Gregory’s University College for Working Adults in Tulsa, Okla. He also served as Executive Vice President and Provost at St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee, Okla., from 1997-2004, and as VP for Admissions and Enrollment Management/Dean of Admissions for Law, Graduate and Undergraduate Admissions at Oklahoma City University from 1992-97. He worked at OCU as Dean of Students from 1986-89. From 1989-92, Hackett was the Associate AD at Northern Illinois University, where he oversaw eight Division I sports, including football and men’s and women’s basketball. The native of Nanuet, N.Y., began his college coaching and teaching career at Baker University in Baldwin, Kan., where he was head baseball coach from 1978-83 and assistant football coach from 1977-83. From there, he went on to coach offensive line for the football program at Div. I Memphis from 1983-85. Hackett earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Tarkio (Mo.) College in 1976 and an M.S. in education from the University of Kansas in 1979. He and his wife Patricia have been married for 38 years and have two adult children, Katie and James.
