oming off perhaps the most successful campaign in program history, the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves may have even more thrills to offer their fans in 2016. The Seawolves return 13 gymnasts from last year’s team – including twotime NCAA Regional qualifier M’rcy Matsunami – along with four talented freshmen to compose the roster. “For the second year in a row, we have a veteran-laden roster and a great balance between our classes,” said UAA head coach Paul Stoklos, whose team broke 20 program records in 2015. “Our senior class is also comprised of some great leaders, which should help speed up the maturity of our younger gymnasts.” Matsunami will lead the way as the Nebraska native is coming off the best individual season in program history, setting or tying 11 individual UAA records and posting seven of the program’s top 12 all-around scores. After earning a league-high four MPSF Gymnast of the Week honors during the regular season, Matsunami finished her record campaign with the MPSF bars title and a trip to the NCAA West Regional all-around finals. Fellow All-MPSF all-around performer Simone Penker is also coming off a terrific season that saw her record the 8th-best all-around average in school history at 38.156. The Austrian also had UAA’s No. 2 bars average and 13th-best in program history at 9.568. Seniors Marie-Sophie Boggasch and Sariaye Jensen both return to give the Seawolves their most talented and experienced bars lineup ever, while either gymnast is capable on vault as well. UAA’s junior class represents the entire West Coast, with Californian Julia York, Oregonian Brice Mizell, Washingtonians Nicole Larkin and Kelsy Konkright, and homegrown talent Kallie Randolph. A two-time All-MPSF floor exercise performer, Randolph already owns two of the top six season averages in program history on her primary event, including a 9.753 mark last year. York is a solid three-event performer, having earned AllMPSF vault honors as a freshman in 2014 and sporting career-highs over 9.7 on beam and floor, too. Meanwhile, Larkin brings careerhighs of 9.775 on bars and 9.825 on floor to go with her leadership abilities, serving as team co-captain for the second year in a row.

Kallie Randolph Konkright owns excellent skills on both vault and floor, while Mizell is trying to regain the form of her freshman season when she competed on all four apparatus. The sophomores are composed of a threesome of talented beam competitors, led by Kendra Daniels. Another Oregon native, Daniels posted a seasonhigh 9.825 last year on beam to tie the fourth-best score in program history. Minnesota native and team co-captain Emily Ramberg also owns a careerhigh of 9.825 on beam, contributing on all four events throughout the 2015 sea-

Nevada native Morgan Ross showed glimpses brilliance in her exhibition routines last year and look to contribute to the regular lineup in 2016, especially on floor exercise. Four freshmen round out the roster, with Maryland native Kierra Abraham capable of a breakout season, according to Stoklos. North Carolinian Kaylin Mancari and former Florida club teammates Erica Man and Morgan Colee will also try to make an impact as rookies.

PAUL STOKLOS Head Coach  32nd Season

he only gymnastics coach the University of Alaska Anchorage has ever known, Paul Stoklos keeps taking the Seawolves to new heights as he embarks on his 32nd season in 2016. Under his leadership, the Seawolves posted a historic 2015 campaign that produced 20 program records, including highest overall average overall, highest beam average and highest single-meet score. Since overseeing UAA’s transition to the Division I level in the early 2000s, Stoklos has boosted the team’s talent to its highest level ever. The 20 best team scores in program history have all come since 2004, including 14 of the top 15 marks since 2009. In 2009, Stoklos’ squad won its first-ever conference title when it captured the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Colorado Springs, and in 2015 UAA came within THE STOKLOS FILE fractions of upsetting league power Sacramento Hometown: Brookfield, Wis. Since joining the MPSF in 2003, the Seawolves have averaged 5.7 all-academic honorees per season — well over half the eligible student-athletes. From the program’s inception in 1985 until becoming a full-fledged Division I program in 2004, Stoklos’ program produced three national champions, 12 All-Americans and 37 Academic All-Americans at the Division II level. Prior to coming to UAA, Stoklos served as a coach as an undergraduate and graduate assistant at the University of Arizona for seven years, helping bring a fledgling program from ground level to a national ranking in just four years. Stoklos was an excellent athlete in his own right, earning varsity letters in football, track and gymnastics in high school. He was a competitive skydiver at Arizona where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1981. An avid and experienced downhill and cross-country skier, Stoklos is a member of the Mt. Alyeska Ski Patrol during the winter months. He enjoys hiking, fishing, scuba diving, skydiving and is a rated private airplane pilot. Stoklos is also a longtime member of the Alaska Search and Rescue Dogs.

TAMI MONETTE Assistant Coach  21st Season

n her 21st season as assistant coach for the Seawolves in 2016, Tami Monette has become an integral part of the program. Monette was voted the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Assistant Coach of the Year in 2009 for the third time, repeating the honor she shared in 2006 and won outright in 2005. Monette has an extensive background in gymnastics as a competitor, head coach, compulsory judge and club owner. She has served two stints as head coach for the Anchorage Gymnastics Association, from 1993-95 and from 1978-85. Monette currently serves as an age-group director at the state level. She is USA safety-certified and has served as a judge at levels five through seven. She has placed gymnasts on Region II teams to Nationals from 1985 through 1995.

ormer collegiate competitor Alyssa Straub returns to the Seawolf gymnastics staff for her second season as the graduate assistant coach in 2016. The former Rutgers University standout was instrumental in UAA’s school-record 48.270 average on balance beam in her first year, helping the squad to four of the top 10 scores in program history. Straub competed in more than 40 career meets in her four seasons at Rutgers and helped the Scarlet Knights to an NCAA Div. I Regional Championships berth as a senior in 2014. A Second Team All-East Atlantic Gymnastics League all-around honoree as a sophomore in 2012, she posted career-highs of 9.875 on vault, 9.7 on uneven bars, 9.875 on beam, 9.8 on floor and 38.825 all-around. Prior to college, the native of Nazareth, Pa., was a five-time Junior Olympic national qualifier, winning a national vault title in 2009, plus state and regional all-around titles in 2010. ead athletic trainer Chris Volk is in her 22nd season with the UAA Athletic Department. Volk cares for the treatment and prevention of injuries to Seawolf student-athletes, and manages the overall operation of the department’s Sport Medicine office. A 1979 graduate of the University of Dayton with a bachelor’s degree in biology, Volk also earned a master’s degree in biology from UD in 1986. She is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. She and her husband Rick are the parents of three children — Megan, Cody and Casey.

2016 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES GYMNASTICS he Seawolves enjoyed a banner season in 2015 with 20 school records, including highest overall average (192.605), highest balance beam average (48.270) and highest single-meet score (193.825). UAA swept all four of its regular-season home meets in its first season in the Alaska Airlines Center, while the Seawolves’ 4thplace finish at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships – hosted by UAA for the first time ever – marked the program’s best showing since 2009. Junior M’rcy Matsunami was among four All-MPSF honorees and qualified as an individual all-arounder for the NCAA Div. I West Regional meet. Matsunami also won the MPSF title on uneven bars and broke multiple school records.

2016 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES GYMNASTICS

he Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) was established in 1992 to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic and West Coast Conferences and other selected colleges and universities in the western United States, providing championship competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. In women’s gymnastics, the league expanded back to six institutions in 2014 as former members Sacramento State and San Jose State rejoined Air Force, Alaska Anchorage, UC Davis and Seattle Pacific. The MPSF was originally formed to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation, to contain the costs of competition, and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. It has also served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. In 2014-15, the Federation is celebrating its 23rd year of competition, and today the MPSF is more relevant than at any other time since its inception. This year the MPSF will again provide competition in 10 Olympic sports while serving 93 teams from 38 universities in nine western states. All MPSF teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in men’s and women’s water polo, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, women’s lacrosse, and men’s volleyball. MPSF team champions are eligible to compete in the NCAA Championships with men’s and women’s water polo, men’s volleyball, and women’s lacrosse champions earning automatic qualification. In 2014-15, MPSF teams won four NCAA team championships, extending the streak to 11 straight years achieving such a feat and bringing the league’s total to 80 NCAA titles since its inaugural season in 1992-93.

n the Seawolf, the University of Alaska Anchorage has one of the more unique mascots in collegiate sports. Originally nicknamed the Sourdoughs, UAA adopted the Seawolf moniker in 1977. The name Seawolf represents a mythical sea creature. According to the legend of the Seawolf, anyone fortunate enough to view it was subject to good luck. The exact nature or shape of the Seawolf, however, was left to the imagination and thus the creature has been depicted in many forms throughout the years. The Seawolf of today was introduced in 1985. Created by the Clark Mishler & Associates Company of Anchorage in cooperation with a University committee, it represents an adaptation of a more traditional Alaska totemic-like characterization of the mythical Seawolf.

Home of the Seawolves

A new era in Seawolf Athletics began in 2014 with the opening of the $110 million, 196,000-square foot Alaska Airlines Center on the UAA campus. The main arena, with a seating capacity of 5,000, will be the home of Seawolf basketball and volleyball, while the gymnastics team will compete in the 800-seat auxilary gym and utilize one of the top training facilities in the nation. The gymnastics team will also host the 2015 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in the main arena. With state-of-the-art scoreboards, video production and sound quality, the Alaska Airlines Center will be a first-class venue for spectators and competitors alike. Behind the scenes, UAA student-athletes from all 13 sports utilize the Center’s high-tech sports medicine and weight training facilities, which include a HydroWorx hydrotherapy pool with underwater treadmill and an AlterG anti-gravity treadmill. Also home to UAA Commencement, high school state tournaments, concerts and numerous community events.

TOM CASE

om Case, Lt. Gen. USAF (Ret.), became chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage in May 2011. Upon completing his Air Force career, he was appointed dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), where he served nearly six years before becoming president and chief operating officer of the state-owned, independently operated Alaska Aerospace

Corporation. Since returning to UAA as Chancellor, Case has focused on helping students succeed in their college goals. In 2011, UAA became one of only 11 universities nationwide to open a VetSuccess program on campus. UAA opened a Veteran’s Resource Center in 2013 to support its growing military and veteran student population. With support from Chancellor funds, UAA established the INNOVATE awards in 2011 to provide an incentive for innovative research. Seawolf Holdings was approved in 2012, establishing a pathway toward the commercialization of UAA research. In February 2013, ZENSOR, LLC became the first startup company incorporated in Alaska based upon research by UAA faculty. A second startup incorporated in June 2013. Currently, UAA has 31 invention disclosures with 12 patents pending. Under Case’s leadership, UAA opened a new Health Sciences Building, the new Alaska Airlines Center, and received funding to complete a new Engineering and Industry Building, slated to open in 2015. Married to his wife Susan for 45 years, they have a daughter Donna, sonin-law Daniel, and three grandchildren. A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Case received a Master of Science degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. He is a graduate of the National War College, the U.S. Army Command & General Staff College, the Air War College, and Emory University’s Advanced Management Program. He is an active member of the community, having served on the boards of the Alaska World Affairs Council and World Trade Center Alaska, and is immediate past president of Commonwealth North. He is an avid pilot and, of course, a great Seawolf fan.

KEITH HACKETT

ntering his third year as Director of Athletics at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2015-16, Keith Hackett has positioned the Seawolves’ 13-sport NCAA program for unprecedented growth and success. Since arriving on Oct. 1, 2013, Hackett has overseen planning and logistics for the department’s transition into the $109 million Alaska Airlines Center – a state-of-the-art sports, community and concert venue that has transformed the UAA campus – along with a major expansion of the Seawolves’ hockey facilities at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Under his leadership, the department has developed a strategic plan that lists priorities, guiding the decision-making process and allowing the department to maintain focus on the Mission of Seawolf Athletics. A university and administrative management executive with 38 years of higher education experience, Hackett values connecting with the Anchorage community and building positive relationships with campus faculty, students, staff and U-Med District partners. In addition to reorganizing the internal management structure of the department, he has also entered into agreements with several national leaders in collegiate brand advancement. Hackett has developed partnerships with industry leader Spectra to manage the Alaska Airlines Center and UAA’s ticketing operations; Learfield Sports – the industry leader in media rights and sponsorships; and its newest partner, Basketball Travelers, to assist UAA in developing the GCI Great Alaska Shootout. Hackett has worked closely with corporate partners GCI and Alaska Airlines – and national TV partner CBS Sports Network – to bolster the vitality of UAA’s most visible event, the GCI Great Alaska Shootout. Other important areas that Hackett has targeted include external development, revenue generation, and enhancing the ‘Seawolf Fan Experience.’ Since Hackett’s arrival, over $3.2 million new dollars have been raised for facility projects and Student-Athlete support, total sales revenue has increased yearly by 36 percent, and significant enhancements have been made to the in-game fan experience and the level of service provided to season-ticket holders and Seawolf fans. Along with his behind-the-scenes contributions, UAA’s success in the competitive arena has also been apparent in Hackett’s first two years, with the Seawolf program finishing among the top 12 percent of all NCAA Div. II institutions in the Learfield Director’s Cup both times. All told during his tenure, the Seawolves’ D-II programs have qualified for NCAA postseason competition at a 90 percent rate, producing 42 All-Americans, four Academic All-Americans®, and seven Great Northwest Athletic Conference team titles. Even more impressively, UAA student-athletes have continued their tradition of academic excellence under Hackett’s leadership, combining for better than a 3.15 overall grade-point average in his of his two years at the helm. Hackett came to the Seawolves after working from 2004-13 as the senior associate AD for internal affairs at the University of Nevada, where he oversaw the football, track & field/cross country and baseball programs. Prior to his time in Reno, Hackett served as Executive VP for Special Projects and Director of the St. Gregory’s University College for Working Adults in Tulsa, Okla. He also served as Executive VP and Provost at St. Gregory’s from 1997-2004, and as VP for Admissions and Enrollment Management/Dean of Admissions for Law, Graduate and Undergraduate Admissions at Oklahoma City University from 1992-97. He worked at OCU as Dean of Students from 1986-89. From 1989-92, Hackett was the Associate AD at Northern Illinois University, where he oversaw eight Division I sports, including football and men’s and women’s basketball. The native of Nanuet, N.Y., began his college coaching and teaching career at Baker University in Baldwin, Kan., where he was head baseball coach from 1978-83 and assistant football coach from 1977-83. From there, he went on to coach offensive line for the football program at Div. I Memphis from 1983-85. Hackett earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Tarkio (Mo.) College in 1976 and an M.S. in education from the University of Kansas in 1979. He and his wife Patricia have been married for 39 years and have two adult children, Katie and James.

laska’s most populous city is home to more than a few surprises. Aside from the human population of nearly 300,000, it is home to 1,500 moose and copious other wildlife. More than 50 glaciers stand in the nearby Chugach Mountains, one of the largest state parks in the nation. It’s the best mix of iconic Alaska and urban amenities. More than 135 miles of paved trails wind through the city, and salmon can be caught within the city limits. But Anchorage

also has a bustling downtown – complete with high-rises, nightlife and one of the nation’s fastest-growing culinary scenes. Anchorage is at the center of road, rail and air travel inside the state, making it a natural fit for visitors hoping to experience Alaska. Activities from the city range from bear viewing to glacier trekking, kayaking to gold panning. Pair adventure opportunities with Anchorage’s outstanding hotels, restaurants,

local breweries, and homegrown arts, and it’s a perfect place to explore no matter the season. Thanksgiving weekend is a special time for Anchorage. The GCI Great Alaska Shootout headlines a holiday weekend packed with events. The Town Square tree lighting, the Anchorage Museums craft fair and seasonal exhibits, and other big sporting events all combine to keep Anchorage jumping.

laska is the largest state in the union — one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second largest state, Texas. Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than three million lakes. Alaska also boasts 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage, and an estimated 100,000 glaciers. The 49th State is home to Denali, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Previously known as Mt. McKinley, the colossal mountain is located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, located 200 miles north of Anchorage, and can be seen from the city on clear days.

UAA’s student-athletes, the beating heart of #SeawolfNation, compete in 13 NCAA collegiate sports. At the Division I level, UAA fields a men’s ice hockey team and a women’s gymnastics team. Competing in Division II are men’s and women’s basketball, cross country running, skiing and indoor and outdoor track & field teams, as well as our women’s volleyball team. True student-athletes, our Seawolves maintained a 3.17 GPA last year across all teams, while producing three conference titles, nine NCAA finishes, 18 All-Americans and placing 34th of 300 schools in the Learfield Sports Director’s Cup rankings. In September 2014, Seawolf Athletics cut the ribbon on its new home, the Alaska Airlines Center, a stateof-the-art 196,000-square-foot sporting event, training, sports medicine, special event and performance venue that is shared by the Anchorage community. The AAC is the new home for the GCI Great Alaska Shootout and has already played host to the NCAA Div. II Women’s Basketball West Regional Championships and the MPSF Gymnastics Championships.
