2015-16 SEASON PREVIEW
2015-16 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES MEN’S BASKETBALL
2
W
ith only four returning letterwinners from last season and five total, the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team will be a new-look bunch in 2015-16. Coming off a 16-13 record and a thirdplace finish (12-6) in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, head coach Rusty Osborne will rely heavily on seven junior transfers as the Seawolves seek an 11th straight winning season and a return to the NCAA Tournament. Leading the way for the returners is senior guard Brian McGill, one of two Seawolves selected on the 2015-16 Preseason All-GNAC Team. The Oregon native was UAA’s secondleading scorer last season with 13.8 ppg, while ranking third in the GNAC and 29th nationally with 5.3 assists per game. McGill scored at least 20 points on eight occasions as a junior, posting impressive shooting numbers of 41.9 percent from three-point range and 79.4 percent at the charity stripe. UAA’s most experienced player is 5thyear senior forward Christian Leckband, who has suited up for 83 career appearances, including 28 starts. One of three former Alaska prep stars on the roster, the Nome product brings career averages of 5.9 ppg and 3.2 rpg, plus the ability to stretch defenses with his 38.5 percent accuracy from deep. Junior forward Travis Parrish was quietly one of UAA’s most efficient players in his first season after switching from football (at D-I Utah State) to the hardcourt. Parrish was one of four Seawolves to shoot .550 or better in 2014-15, connecting at a .585 clip after entering the starting lineup on Dec. 13. Also returning to the frontcourt is a pair of sophomore power forwards from the international ranks with Norwegian Sjur Berg and Aussie Jackson McTier. A 6-7, 225-pounder, Berg played big minutes last year, recording 4.7 ppg and ranking third on UAA’s all-time freshman list with 5.2 rpg. He also shot 58.6 percent from the field, which would have ranked fifth in the GNAC with the minimum number of attempts. At 6-7, 235, McTier has added 30 pounds to his frame since arriving two years ago. After playing limited minutes as a freshman and redshirting last year, the team’s top academic performer is eager to play a key on-court role. Another 2014-15 redshirt, freshman guard Damien Fulp will be among the eight players to make their Seawolf debuts. Like McTier, Osborne says Fulp has benefitted from added weight and strength, and he could make an impact at either backcourt position. Leading a highly accomplished group of transfers is Preseason All-GNAC selection Sekou ‘Suki’ Wiggs, who joins the Seawolves after two seasons at Division I program Idaho. A former top prep recruit from Seattle’s O’Dea High School, Wiggs averaged 10.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 61 career games with the Vandals, earning the WAC’s Sixth
Senior point guard Brian McGill is a Preseason All-GNAC honoree a er averaging 13.8 ppg and 5.3 apg last year.
Nome product Chris an Leckband is UAA’s most experienced player and second-leading returning scorer at 7.0 ppg.
A 6-7 forward from Norway, Sjur Berg was one of the GNAC’s top freshmen a year ago.
Man of the Year honors in 2013-14. As a sophomore last year, the 6-4 combo guard was his team’s third-leading scorer (11.5 ppg) and second-leading playmaker (2.7 apg), along with team-highs of 106 free throws made and 143 attempted. Meanwhile, five former junior college standouts join the fray, with combo guard Diante Mitchell (Western Nebraska CC) and swingmen Spencer Svejcar (Laramie County [Wyo.] CC) and Drew Peterson (San Diego Miramar Coll.) joining Wiggs in the backcourt, and California forwards Corey Hammell (Santa Rosa JC) and Tayler Thompson (Cuesta Coll.) boosting the frontcourt. Svejcar was an NJCAA All-Region IX First Team selection as a sophomore after averaging 16.0 ppg, 3.9 rpg and 2.5 apg, while shooting over 40 percent from long range. In his two years at WNCC, Mitchell averaged nearly 15 points and three assists per game, and he connected at impressive rates of .508
FG, .408 3FG and .860 FT in 2014-15. With a 3.86 overall GPA, Mitchell was also an NJCAA Academic All-American. Peterson, the final addition to UAA’s recruiting class, was a 2-time All-PCAC honoree at Miramar, where he averaged 12.8 ppg and 4.0 rpg last season. A versatile 6-6 forward, Hammell averaged a double-double (14.3 ppg/10.2 rpg) as a sophomore, scoring double figures in 20 of 22 games. Thompson was an All-Western States Conference performer at Cuesta last year, averaging 11.6 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 1.6 bpg and shooting 58 percent. Alongside Wiggs, the only other transfer from a 4-year school is Anchorage native Augustus Simmers (Anchorage Christian Schools), who joins UAA after splitting his first two campaigns between Palm Beach (Fla.) State College and Malone University, a fellow D-II program in Ohio. The 6-4 swingman put up 3.4 ppg, 2.9 rpg and shot .440 FG in 13.9 minutes per game at Malone a year ago.

fter leading Alaska Anchorage to 10 straight winning seasons — including five NCAA Tourney appearances — Rusty Osborne has clearly established himself among the top coaches in both Division II basketball and school history. Under Osborne’s leadership, UAA has gone 197-103 (.657) over the past 10 years, including victories over nine Division I teams and 14 nationally ranked D-II teams. In 2011-12, Osborne piloted the Seawolves to a 23-7 record — the secondbest winning percentage (.767) in program history — and their second straight NCAA 2nd Round appearance. In fact, UAA is 6-3 in NCAA play in its last three appearances, with two of those losses coming to the eventual national runner-up. The 2011-12 campaign was Osborne’s third with 23 or more victories as UAA produced the Div. II Bulletin National Player of the Year and GNAC POY in senior center Taylor Rohde. During his head coaching tenure, Osborne’s squads have also produced three All-Americans, three CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-Americans, eight AllWest Region performers and 17 All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference first- or second-team honorees, while 16 Seawolves have gone on to play professionally. In 2007-08, Osborne earned the GNAC Coach of the Year award as UAA posted the best record in school history (29-6), won its first GNAC title, and advanced to

In six of the last eight campaigns, Osborne’s teams have finished in the top 10 of the NCAA Div. II national stats in either three-point or free-throw percentage, including 2008-09 when UAA was 2nd from the charity stripe and 7th from long range. Osborne’s teams have also gained a reputation for defense, leading the GNAC in points allowed in five of his 11 seasons. From 1991-2004, Osborne spent 13 seasons as an assistant with the Seawolves, including 11 years as Charlie Bruns’ chief assistant. The Houston, Texas, native joined the UAA staff after serving under former Seawolf coach Harry Larrabee three seasons (1988-91) at Div. I Southwest Texas State. The Seawolves have won 64 percent of their games with Osborne on the staff, claiming four conference titles and nine trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament. With the more victories (208) than any coach in Seawolf Basketball history, Osborne has led the Seawolves to 10 straight winning seasons, averaging 20 ‘W’s per campaign in that span.

Osborne and the Seawolves cut down their homecourt nets a er winning the 2008 NCAA Div. II West Regionals. As an assistant, he was responsible for the recruitment of five All-Americans, 12 AllWest Region players, 28 all-conference performers and five league Players of the Year. In addition, 17 of his players have gone on to the professional ranks in the United States and abroad. Before making the move to the collegiate ranks, Osborne worked for one year at the prep level as an assistant coach at Hyde Park Baptist in Austin, Texas, helping the team to a 36-8 finish and a state title. Osborne prepped at Alief-Elsik High in Houston, where he was a two-time alldistrict selection and senior captain. Collegiately, he lettered his freshman season at Mary Hardin-Baylor in Texas, and redshirted at Eastern New Mexico. Osborne graduated from the University of Texas in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in education and received his master’s degree in educational administration two years later from Southwest Texas. He and his wife Staci, an Anchorage native, are the parents of five children — sons Sagan, Austin and Kylan, and daughters J.J. and Kadyn.

Seawolf Holdings was approved in 2012, establishing a pathway toward the commercialization of UAA research. In February 2013, ZENSOR, LLC became the first startup company incorporated in Alaska based upon research by UAA faculty. A second startup incorporated in June 2013. Currently, UAA has 31 invention disclosures with 12 patents pending. Under Case’s leadership, UAA opened a new Health Sciences Building, the new Alaska Airlines Center, and received funding to complete a new Engineering and Industry Building, slated to open in 2015. Married to his wife Susan for 45 years, they have a daughter Donna, sonin-law Daniel, and three grandchildren. A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Case received a Master of Science degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
KEITH HACKETT
E
ntering his third year as Director of Athletics at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2015-16, Keith Hackett has positioned the Seawolves’ 13-sport NCAA program for unprecedented growth and success. Since arriving on Oct. 1, 2013, Hackett has overseen planning and logistics for the department’s transition into the $109 million Alaska Airlines Center – a state-of-the-art sports, community and concert venue that has transformed the UAA campus – along with a major expansion of the Seawolves’ hockey facilities at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Under his leadership, the department has developed a strategic plan that lists priorities, guiding the decision-making process and allowing the department to maintain focus on the Mission of Seawolf Athletics. A university and administrative management executive with 38 years of higher education experience, Hackett values connecting with the Anchorage community and building positive relationships with campus faculty, students, staff and U-Med District partners. In addition to reorganizing the internal management structure of the department, he has also entered into agreements with several national leaders in collegiate brand advancement. Hackett has developed partnerships with industry leader Spectra to manage the Alaska Airlines Center and UAA’s ticketing operations; Learfield Sports – the industry leader in media rights and sponsorships; and its newest partner, Basketball Travelers, to assist UAA in developing the GCI Great Alaska Shootout. Hackett has worked closely with corporate partners GCI and Alaska Airlines – and national TV partner CBS Sports Network – to bolster the vitality of UAA’s most visible event, the GCI Great Alaska Shootout. Other important areas that Hackett has targeted include external development, revenue generation, and enhancing the ‘Seawolf Fan Experience.’ Since Hackett’s arrival, over $3.2 million new dollars have been raised for facility projects and Student-Athlete support, total sales revenue has increased yearly by 36 percent, and significant enhancements have been made to the in-game fan experience and the level of service provided to season-ticket holders and Seawolf fans. Along with his behind-the-scenes contributions, UAA’s success in the competitive arena has also been apparent in Hackett’s first two years, with the Seawolf program finishing among the top 12 percent of all NCAA Div. II institutions in the Learfield Director’s Cup both times. All told during his tenure, the Seawolves’ D-II programs have qualified for NCAA postseason competition at a 90 percent rate, producing 42 All-Americans, four Academic All-Americans®, and seven Great Northwest Athletic Conference team titles. Even more impressively, UAA student-athletes have continued their tradition of academic excellence under Hackett’s leadership, combining for better than a 3.15 overall grade-point average in his of his two years at the helm. Hackett came to the Seawolves after working from 2004-13 as the senior associate AD for internal affairs at the University of Nevada, where he oversaw the football, track & field/cross country and baseball programs. Prior to his time in Reno, Hackett served as Executive VP for Special Projects and Director of the St. Gregory’s University College for Working Adults in Tulsa, Okla. He also served as Executive VP and Provost at St. Gregory’s from 1997-2004, and as VP for Admissions and Enrollment Management/Dean of Admissions for Law, Graduate and Undergraduate Admissions at Oklahoma City University from 1992-97. He worked at OCU as Dean of Students from 1986-89. From 1989-92, Hackett was the Associate AD at Northern Illinois University, where he oversaw eight Division I sports, including football and men’s and women’s basketball. The native of Nanuet, N.Y., began his college coaching and teaching career at Baker University in Baldwin, Kan., where he was head baseball coach from 1978-83 and assistant football coach from 1977-83. From there, he went on to coach offensive line for the football program at Div. I Memphis from 1983-85. Hackett earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Tarkio (Mo.) College in 1976 and an M.S. in education from the University of Kansas in 1979. He and his wife Patricia have been married for 39 years and have two adult children, Katie and James.
