2016-17 SEASON PREVIEW

2016-17 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES MEN’S BASKETBALL

2

T

here’s no denying that expectations are high for the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team in 2016-17. Coming off a 21-11 campaign and featuring seven experienced seniors, the Seawolves have been predicted to win the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in the preseason coaches’ poll, and have been picked as high as No. 3 in the NCAA Div. II preseason rankings by The Sporting News. Among UAA’s nine returning letterwinners are seven players who have logged at least 11 career starts, and three players who earned All-GNAC awards last season, including Third Team All-American senior guard Suki Wiggs. “It’s usually tough to keep a team focused when it’s getting a lot of attention in the preseason,” said head coach Rusty Osborne, who owns a program-record 229 victories in his 12 previous seasons. “But this group has the maturity, leadership and composure to stay focused on the things they can control – improving every day and becoming a cohesive unit.” In his first year after transferring from Div. I Idaho, Wiggs burst on the scene as the GNAC’s leading scorer and No. 11 in the nation with 24.1 points per game, earning GNAC Newcomer of the Year and First Team All-GNAC honors. The 6-4, 190-pounder also ranked third in the league with 7.3 rebounds and 1.6 steals per contest, and 10th with 3.3 assists per game, as he crushed the school records for free throws made (235) and made per game (7.6). Wiggs will be joined in the backcourt by fellow senior starters Spencer Svejcar and Diante Mitchell, who both appear healthy after battling through injuries last year. Despite being banged up, Svejcar managed to average 11.8 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 30 contests, garnering honorable mention All-GNAC status from his wing position. Meanwhile, Mitchell averaged 10.3 points and 2.8 assists, starting the first 21 games. The 6-1 point guard shot 50 percent from the floor and 46 percent from long range before being shut down in late January with foot and shoulder injuries. Palmer native and former Colony High star Damien Fulp, a 6-2, 180-pound combo guard, gained valuable playing experience as a true freshman late last season, while JC transfer Ashton Pomrehn – a sharp-shooting, 6-3 guard from Shasta (Calif.) College – will give the Seawolf backcourt even more versatility. Along with Svejcar, veterans Travis Parrish and Augustus Simmers are players who provide versatility on the wing with their size and strength. A former Div. I football player, the 6-4, 215-pound Parrish owns the most experience in a Seawolf uniform with 60 games, including 30 starts. Simmers, a 6-4, 220-pounder who starred locally at Anchorage Christian, will make his on-court UAA debut after redshirting last year as a transfer from fellow D-II program Malone. Up front, UAA has perhaps deepest and

most talented group of post players in the Osborne era. Senior power forward Corey Hammell led the league by a wide margin with 10.2 rebounds per game last year, earning Second Team All-GNAC honors. The 6-6, 225-pound Californian became just the sixth player in UAA history to average a double-double and ranked second nationally with 4.2 offensive rebounds per game. One of two true newcomers to the program along with Pomrehn, senior and Wasilla native Connor Devine returns to his home state after three seasons at Div. I mid-major power South Dakota State. The 6-10 center played in 77 games for the Jackrabbits, collecting 55

blocks and shooting 56 percent from the field. Sophomore power forward Sjur Berg returns to the lineup after missing most of the last year with an elbow injury and receiving a medical redshirt. The 6-7 power forward from Norway shot 58 percent from the floor as a true freshman in 2014-15, averaging 4.5 points and 5.3 rebounds. Two Australians – junior veteran Jackson McTier and redshirt freshman Curtis Ryan – add more international flavor to the lineup as well. UAA will also benefit from a pair of veterans in practice as senior guard Drew Peterson and junior forward Brian Pearson will redshirt this 2016-17 campaign, coach Osborne announced in the preseason.

fter leading Alaska Anchorage to 11 straight winning seasons — including five NCAA Tourney appearances — Rusty Osborne has clearly established himself among the top coaches in both Division II basketball and school history. Under Osborne’s leadership, UAA has gone 218-114 (.657) over the past 11 years, including victories over 10 Division I teams and 14 nationally ranked D-II teams. In 2011-12, Osborne piloted the Seawolves to a 23-7 record — the secondbest winning percentage (.767) in program history — and their second straight NCAA 2nd Round appearance. In fact, UAA is 6-3 in NCAA play in its last three appearances, with two of those losses coming to the eventual national runner-up. The 2011-12 campaign was Osborne’s third with 23 or more victories as UAA produced the Div. II Bulletin National Player of the Year and GNAC POY in senior center Taylor Rohde. During his head coaching tenure, Osborne’s squads have also produced four All-Americans, three CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-Americans, nine AllWest Region performers and 20 All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference first- or second-team honorees, while 17 Seawolves have gone on to play professionally. In 2007-08, Osborne earned the GNAC Coach of the Year award as UAA posted the best record in school history (29-6), won its first GNAC title, and advanced to

The Seawolves produced a pair of All-Americans -- including GNAC Player of the Year Luke Cooper -- and rose as high as No. 4 in the national poll, earning their first-ever No. 1 NCAA Tournament seed. In seven of the last nine campaigns, Osborne’s teams have finished in the top 10 of the NCAA Div. II national stats in either three-point or free-throw percentage, including 2008-09 when UAA was 2nd from the charity stripe and 7th from long range. Osborne’s teams have also gained a reputation for defense, leading the GNAC in points allowed in five of his 12 seasons. From 1991-2004, Osborne spent 13 seasons as an assistant with the Seawolves, including 11 years as Charlie Bruns’ chief assistant. The Houston, Texas, native joined the UAA staff after serving under former Seawolf coach Harry Larrabee three seasons (1988-91) at Div. I Southwest Texas State. The Seawolves have won 64 percent of their games with Osborne on the staff, claiming four conference titles and nine trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament. With the more victories (229) than any coach in Seawolf Basketball history, Osborne has led the Seawolves to 11 straight winning seasons, averaging 20 ‘W’s per campaign in that span.

Osborne and the Seawolves cut down their homecourt nets a er winning the 2008 NCAA Div. II West Regionals. As an assistant, he was responsible for the recruitment of five All-Americans, 12 AllWest Region players, 28 all-conference performers and five league Players of the Year. In addition, 17 of his players have gone on to the professional ranks in the United States and abroad. Before making the move to the collegiate ranks, Osborne worked for one year at the prep level as an assistant coach at Hyde Park Baptist in Austin, Texas, helping the team to a 36-8 finish and a state title. Osborne prepped at Alief-Elsik High in Houston, where he was a two-time alldistrict selection and senior captain. Collegiately, he lettered his freshman season at Mary Hardin-Baylor in Texas, and redshirted at Eastern New Mexico. Osborne graduated from the University of Texas in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in education and received his master’s degree in educational administration two years later from Southwest Texas. He and his wife Staci, an Anchorage native, are the parents of five children — sons Sagan, Austin and Kylan, and daughters J.J. and Kadyn.

UAA ADMINISTRATION

2016-17 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES MEN’S BASKETBALL CHANCELLOR

TOM CASE

T

om Case, Lt. Gen. USAF (Ret.), became chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage in May 2011. Upon completing his Air Force career, he was appointed dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), where he served nearly six years before becoming president and chief operating officer of the state-owned, independently operated Alaska Aerospace

Corporation. Since returning to UAA as Chancellor, Case has focused on helping students succeed in their college goals. In 2011, UAA became one of only 11 universities nationwide to open a VetSuccess program on campus. UAA opened a Veteran’s Resource Center in 2013 to support its growing military and veteran student population. With support from Chancellor funds, UAA established the INNOVATE awards in 2011 to provide an incentive for innovative research. Seawolf Holdings was approved in 2012, establishing a pathway toward the commercialization of UAA research. In February 2013, ZENSOR, LLC became the first startup company incorporated in Alaska based upon research by UAA faculty. A second startup incorporated in June 2013. Currently, UAA has 31 invention disclosures with 12 patents pending. Under Case’s leadership, UAA opened a new Health Sciences Building, the new Alaska Airlines Center, and received funding to complete a new Engineering and Industry Building, slated to open in 2015. Married to his wife Susan for 45 years, they have a daughter Donna, sonin-law Daniel, and three grandchildren. A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Case received a Master of Science degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. He is a graduate of the National War College, the U.S. Army Command & General Staff College, the Air War College, and Emory University’s Advanced Management Program. He is an active member of the community, having served on the boards of the Alaska World Affairs Council and World Trade Center Alaska, and is immediate past president of Commonwealth North. He is an avid pilot and, of course, a great Seawolf fan.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

KEITH HACKETT

E

ntering his fourth year as Director of Athletics at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2016-17, Keith Hackett has positioned the Seawolves’ 13-sport NCAA program for unprecedented success. All told during his tenure, the Seawolves’ D-II programs have qualified for NCAA postseason competition at a 90 percent rate, producing 69 All-Americans, five Academic All-Americans®, 14 Great Northwest Athletic Conference team titles, plus NCAA top-3 finishes in men's cross country (2015) and women's basketball (2016 runner-up). Even more impressively, UAA student-athletes have continued their tradition of academic excellence under Hackett’s leadership, combining for better than a 3.15 overall grade-point average in each of his years at the helm. In the past three years, the Seawolves have also finished among the top programs in NCAA Div. II in the NACDA Learfield Directors’ Cup. In 201516, UAA finished No. 8 in the final standings out of 307 D-II schools nationally. Under Hackett’s leadership, the department has developed a strategic plan that lists the highest priorities for continued growth and development. These strategic priorities guide and direct many of the Seawolf Athletic Department’s decisions. Meanwhile, student-athlete success and the studentathlete experience are his highest priorities. Creating college graduates, honorable citizens and young people who are prepared to lead and succeed in life after they leave UAA are at the core of the department’s mission. A university and administrative management executive with 39 years of higher education experience, Hackett values connecting with the Anchorage community and building positive relationships with campus faculty, students, staff and U-Med District partners. In addition to reorganizing the internal management structure of the department, he has also entered into agreements with several national leaders in collegiate brand advancement. Hackett has developed partnerships with industry leader Spectra to manage the Alaska Airlines Center and UAA’s ticketing operations; Learfield Sports – the industry leader in media rights and sponsorships; and Basketball Travelers, which assists UAA in developing the GCI Great Alaska Shootout. Hackett has worked closely with corporate partners GCI and Alaska Airlines – and national TV partner CBS Sports Network – to bolster the vitality of UAA’s most visible event, the GCI Great Alaska Shootout. Other priorities that Hackett has targeted include external relations and development, revenue generation, and a significant focus on the ‘Seawolf Fan Experience.’ Since his arrival, over $4 million has been raised for facility projects and direct support to Seawolf sports teams. Hackett came to the Seawolves after working from 2004-13 as the senior associate AD for internal affairs at the University of Nevada, where he oversaw the football, track & field/cross country and baseball programs. Prior to his time in Reno, Hackett served as Executive VP for Special Projects and Director of the St. Gregory’s University College for Working Adults in Tulsa, Okla. He also served as Executive VP and Provost at St. Gregory’s from 1997-2004, and as VP for Admissions and Enrollment Management/Dean of Admissions for Law, Graduate and Undergraduate Admissions at Oklahoma City University from 1992-97. He worked at OCU as Dean of Students from 1986-89. From 1989-92, Hackett was the Associate AD at Northern Illinois University, where he oversaw eight Division I sports, including football and men’s and women’s basketball. The native of Nanuet, N.Y., began his college coaching and teaching career at Baker University in Baldwin, Kan., where he was head baseball coach from 1978-83 and assistant football coach from 1977-83. From there, he went on to coach offensive line for the football program at Div. I Memphis from 1983-85. Hackett earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Tarkio (Mo.) College in 1976 and an M.S. in education from the University of Kansas in 1979. He and his wife Patricia have been married for 40 years and have two adult children, Katie and James, and six grandsons.

Competing in Division II are men’s and women’s basketball, cross country running, skiing and indoor and outdoor track & field teams, as well as our women’s volleyball team. True student-athletes, our Seawolves maintained a 3.24 GPA last year across all teams, while producing seven conference titles, nine NCAA finishes, 28 All-Americans and placing No. 8 of 307 schools in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup rankings. In September 2014, Seawolf Athletics cut the ribbon on its new home, the Alaska Airlines Center, a state-of-the-art 196,000-square-foot sporting event, training, sports medicine, special event and performance venue that is shared by the Anchorage community. The AAC is the home for the GCI Great Alaska Shootout and has already played host to the NCAA Div. II West Regional Championships for women’s basketball and volleyball, and the MPSF Gymnastics Championships.
