2012 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEASON PREVIEW

he Alaska Anchorage Seawolves will use a roster full of returning talent and promising newcomers to help them achieve their team goals in 2012. “We are a team built around getting athletes to national championships,” said 22ndyear head coach Michael Firess. “As such, our team goals center on a top-10 finish nationally for men and a top-20 finish for the women’s team. We feel that these are attainable this year.” The Seawolves return 22 letterwinners (12 men, 10 women) from last season, including eight of the nine that qualified for the 2011 NCAA Track & Field Championships in May. UAA will also add 20 newcomers (12 men, 8 women) to the roster. The returning Seawolves will feature AllAmericans in Susan Bick, Micah Chelimo, Alfred Kangogo, Ruth Keino and Shaun Ward. Combined, the five have seven AllAmerica honors between them. “We have multiple returning athletes that have qualified for the national championships, so expectations are high for many of our athletes to return to that level once again this season,” said Friess. Highlighting the freshman class is Cody Parker, a javelin thrower who is expected to make an immediate impact and compete at the national level. With a personal-best toss of 241 feet, one inch, the Comox, B.C., native should have a chance to break records and qualify for the NCAAs. “Cody will be an exciting addition to the roster,” said Friess. “He has the ability to be at the very top in the conference, region, and nation.” In addition to the fresh faces on the team, the Seawolves made some staffing changes, promoting Ryan McWilliams to assistant coach and adding Anthony Tomsich and former UAA standout Mary Pearce as graduate and student assistant coaches, respectively. “This is the best coaching staff I have had,” said Friess. “Ryan is really advancing our training and the recruitment of our sprint and multi-event athletes, while our grad as-

sistants (Pearce and Tomsich) are helping improve all aspects of the program.” The 2012 slate will feature five weekends in California and one in Oregon. The GNAC Championships will be held in Nampa, Idaho, and in Monmouth, Ore., in May, while the NCAA Div. II Track & Field Championships will take place on May 24-26 in Pueblo, Colo. “We have been excited for the season to begin for a long time now,” said Friess. “Our sprinters, jumpers, and throwers have been training hard for the past six months and are ready to compete.”

Head Coach 22nd Season

ne of the nation’s most respected track & field mentors, Michael Friess is in his 22nd season as head coach of the cross country and track & field programs at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2011-12. In seven seasons of full institutional sponsorship, the Seawolf track & field teams have quickly left their mark on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference under Friess, earning one individual NCAA title and two runner-up finishes, 21 All-America awards, 40 individual conference titles, 72 all-conference honorees, and nine league records. In less than a decade as a full-fledged program, Friess has piloted the track & field squads to success on a national level, qualifying 46 athletes for NCAAs since 2001. The Seawolves have been no stranger to the NCAA Championships All-Americans Coached: 16 under Friess’ guidance, having qualified a team for the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships 14 times overall, including sending both the men’s and women’s squads in 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. Friess has earned 12 conference coach-of-the-year accolades in cross country, including three straight women’s coach-of-the-year honors from 2003-05. In 2010 and 2011, Friess swept both the men’s and women’s GNAC Coach of the Year honors. In addition to conference honors, Friess earned his first West Region honor in the spring of 2009 for the men’s track & field team, before picking up his first women’s cross country honor in the fall of the same year. Friess went on to sweep the West Region in 2010 and 2011, claiming both the men’s and women’s Coach of the Year accolades. Athletes have excelled in the classroom as well under Friess, earning 139 academic all-conference accolades over the last 11 seasons and 45 all-academic honors since 2005-06. Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams have combined for 12 U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team recognitions since 2005, while both track & field teams have made the All-Academic Team each year since 2009. Friess graduated from Linfield (Ore.) College with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 1985 and was an NAIA All-American distance runner for the Wildcats. He earned a master’s degree in sport biomechanics from the University of Oregon in 1986. A graduate of Anchorage’s Dimond High, Friess remains active in the local running community as a competitor, coach and organizer. Some of the events Friess organizes include the Mayor’s Marathon & Half-Marathon and the Crow Pass Crossing. A USA Track & Field Level II coach, Friess is also a member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and is certified by ACSM as an exercise test technologist and exercise specialist. T.J. GarlATZ Assistant Coach 4th Season

T.J. Garlatz is in his fifth season as an as-

sistant coach with Alaska Anchorage’s cross country and track & field programs in 201112 In addition to his coaching duties with the Seawolves, Garlatz serves extensively as a recruiter for UAA. Last season, Garlatz helped UAA sweep both the men’s and women’s West Region and GNAC Championships in cross country, while producing four All-Americans and a pair of top-10 team finished at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. In the spring, Garlatz helped produce five All-Americans at the NCAA Track & Field Championships and the men’s fourth straight top-20 placing. In 2009-10, Garlatz helped the women’s cross country team to its first-ever GNAC and West Region titles, while producing a combined THE GARLATZ FILE three All-Americans at the NCAAs and a team-best 5th-place finish. During his first season with UAA in 2007-08, Garlatz helped guide the men’s cross country team to a thirdplace finish at the GNAC Championships and a fifth-place result at the NCAA West Regional. He also helped oversee both the men’s and women’s track squads to program-best finishes at the conference championship meet. Garlatz came to the Seawolves after serving as an assistant coach at Great Northwest Athletic Conference rival Western Washington for three seasons. While at WWU, Garlatz helped guide the Vikings to a conference title in men’s cross country (2006), two men’s indoor track & field conference championships (2005, 2006) and one GNAC title in men’s outdoor track & field (2005). Five athletes earned All-America honors and 27 earned all-conference recognition during Garlatz’s tenure at WWU, while six were named Academic All-Americans. A postgraduate athlete at WWU, Garlatz competed in both cross country and track & field for one season, helping lead the Vikings to the 2003 GNAC title in men’s cross country. He also earned an individual conference championship in the 10,000-meter run at the 2003 outdoor track & field championships. Prior to his coaching stint at WWU, Garlatz served as an assistant coach with the cross country and track & field program’s at Inglemoor High School (Kenmore, Wash.) from Sept. 1998 to June 2003. The former NCAA Division II Academic All-American earned a Bachelor’s of Arts in Mathematics from the University of Washington in 2002 and a Master’s of Science in Exercise Science from WWU in 2007. He and his wife Kristin were married in July 2010.

Ryan McWILLIAMS Assistant Coach 1st Season

yan McWilliams joins UAA as the Seawolves’ new assistant cross country and track & field coach in 2012. McWilliams, who works primarily with the sprinters and jumpers, has served as a graduate assistant for the Seawolves the past two seasons after a decorated career at Angelo State University from 2005-09. From Alpine, Texas, McWillams registered six top-10 finishes at the NCAAs as a student-athlete, including three All-America honors in the decathlon and two in the 110 hurdles. The Rams’ team captain ended his career with a runner-up finish in the decathlon, seventh in the 110 hurdles and fourth in the mile relay at the 2009 NCAA Div. II Championships. McWilliams graduated from ASU in 2009 with a major in kinesiology and exercise science and is currently working on a master’s in public health at UAA.

Graduate Assistant Coach 1st Season

nthony Tomsich joins the UAA staff in 2011-12 as a graduate assistant coach for the cross country and track & field teams. Tomsich is a former runner from GNAC foe Western Washinton University and grew up in Fairbanks, attending West Valley High. While with the Vikings, Tomsich was named the GNAC 2006-07 Male Athlete of the Year and earned All-America honors in the 1,500 meters at the NCAA Div. II Outdoor Championships in 2007. He also posted a career-best time of 3:48.72 – third-best in school history. Tomsich also won that event at the GNAC Championships in a league and meet record time of 3:50.25.

Volunteer Assistant Coach 3rd Season

ormer UAA cross country and track & field star David Kiplagat is in his third season as a volunteer track coach with UAA in 2012. A native of Kapsabet, Kenya, Kiplagat graduated from UAA in the spring of 2009 as the most decorated distance runner ever to suit up for the Green & Gold. In addition to his three All-America awards, Kiplagat was a fourtime All-Region honoree and a three-time All-Conference member. In 2006 he captured the individual GNAC cross country title and won the 1,500-meter race at the conference championships in track. Kiplagat returned the following season with a GNAC title in the 5,000 meters. Kiplagat earned a bachelor’s of Business Administration in Finance and Economics and is pursuing a master’s in public administration. He also received five Academic All-Conference accolades during his tenure as a Seawolf.

MARY PEARCE

Student Assistant Coach 1st Season

AA’s first-ever track & field All-American, Mary Pearce returns to the Green & Gold as an student assistant coach in 2012. A two-time All-American in the 400 meters, Pearce posted a career-high fourth-place finish at the 2007 NCAA Championships with a GNAC-record time of 53.56 seconds. The local Anchorage product earned three GNAC titles, winning the 400 meters in 2007 and 2006, plus the 200-meter dash in 2006. Before attending UAA, Pearce, ran track at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, for two seasons, placing 11th in the 800 meters at the 2004 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Pearce graduated from Dimond High School, where she claimed regional titles in the 200 meters and 400 meters all four years. She earned her B.S. in anthropology from UAA in 2007.

allas Baldwin enters her fourth season in 2011-12 as UAA’s assistant sports information director. Baldwin serves as the Seawolves’ hockey, cross country, skiing and track & field contact, while helping coordinate the GoSeawolves.com website. Baldwin also serves on the UAA Hall of Fame committee. Baldwin earned her bachelor’s degree in communications in 2007 from Worcester State College in Massachusetts. After graduation she completed her internship at Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo during the 2007-08 season.

Volk enters her 18th season with the UAA Athletic Department. in 2011-12. Volk cares for the treatment and prevention of injuries to Seawolf student-athletes, and manages the overall operation of the department’s Sport Medicine office. A 1979 graduate of the University of Dayton with a bachelor’s degree in biology, Volk also earned a master’s degree in biology from UD in 1986. 2011 SEASON REVIEW

he Seawolves wrapped up another successful season with five All-Americans at the NCAA Div. II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 2011. The Seawolf men finished tied for 19th in the team standings, marking four straight seasons in the top 20 at Nationals. Leading the Sewolf pack at the NCAAs was the West Region Male Track Athlete of the Year, Alfred Kangogo, who collected a podium finish with a 3rd-place showing in the 1,500 meters. Other All-America honors went to senior David Registe (4th, long jump), sophomores Ruth Keino (8th, 10,000 meters) and Micah Chelimo (6th, 3,000-meter steeplechase) and freshman Susan Bick (8th, 800 meters) At the GNAC Championships, Registe was named the Most Outstanding Male Performer after posting a meet record with 30 individual points and becoming the first athlete to win five titles (including two relays) in a single conference meet. Three other individuals – Chelimo (steeplechase & 5,000 meters), Shaun Ward (400-meter hurdles) and Keino (5,000 meters) – came away with GNAC titles, while both the men’s 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay teams brought home the gold. Throughout the season, the Seawolves combined for 19 school records (9 women, 10 men), while placing 13 athletes on the inaugural USTFCCCA Track & Field Div. II All-Region Team and 11 on the GNAC’s AllAcademic Team.

GREAT NORTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

tretching from Alaska to Oregon to Montana – and now to Canada – the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has quickly established itself as one of the most successful leagues in the NCAA Division II ranks. Founded in 2001 as a 10-team league, the GNAC returned to its original membership number with the 2010 addition of Simon Fraser of Burnaby, British Columbia. Along with Montana State Billings, which joined the league in 2007, the GNAC is also comprised of original members Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Fairbanks, Central Washington, Northwest Nazarene (Idaho), Saint Martin’s (Wash.), Seattle Pacific (Wash.), Western Oregon and

Western Washington. In the last five years alone, the GNAC has produced two national team titles (2009 SPU women’s soccer, 2012 WWU men’s basketball), three national runner-up finishes, four NCAA Final 4 basketball appearances (three by UAA’s men and women), and top-5 NCAA women’s cross country placings by both SPU and UAA in 2009. UAA sponsors seven of the GNAC’s 14 sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

Chancellor – University of Alaska Anchorage

om Case assumed the chancellorship of the University of Alaska Anchorage in May 2011. A retired 3-star Air Force Lt. General, Case has spent more than 12 years in Alaska, including two Air Force tours of duty, five years as dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), and three years as president and chief operating officer of a state-owned, independently operated Aerospace corporation. The 1969 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy began his 33-year military career flying in Vietnam. Later, he served at the Pentagon, was selected as the first Air Force Chief of Staff Chair on the faculty of the National War College, and eventually went on to command two fighter wings, a numbered air force and Alaskan Command. He also served as deputy commander and chief of staff for the nation’s two largest geographic joint combatant commands. After retiring from the Air Force, Case returned to higher education as dean of CBPP at UAA. During his tenure, CBPP added several new certificate and degree programs, including a graduate certificate in Global Logistics, and played an instrumental role in the formation of CBPP’s Experimental Economics Laboratory.

In 11 seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic

department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways. Starting with the 2007-08 campaign, UAA has enjoyed four of the most memorable athletic seasons in school history, highlighted by three Final Four appearances for Seawolf basketball teams (women twice, men once), plus NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country (four times), skiing (four times), and men’s track & field (twice). In fact, with UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, ground soon will be broken on UAA’s planned $109 million Seawolf and Community Arena on campus. He has also overseen major upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of a new gym floor and bleachers at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex in 2010. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Hockey Classic and Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State. Dr. Cobb and his wife Sandra reside in East Anchorage.

ACADEMICS The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 students through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the University’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addiction Studies, the Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a minimum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.

SEAWOLF ATHLETICS

Nicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as

members of NCAA Division I in men’s ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, and women’s cross country. UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic. Since joining the NCAA ranks in 1977, UAA has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 164 Seawolves have earned All-America honors, and UAA has produced 15 individual national champions since 1991. The 2010-11 campaign will go down as one of the most overall successful years in Seawolf Athletics history as 10 of 11 UAA teams advanced in postseason competition, including the secondever WCHA Final Five appearance for hockey. Both basketball and cross country squads, plus volleyball, skiing and track & field, made NCAA appearances. Seawolves student-athletes have enjoyed unprecedented success in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 14 of the last 17 years.
