2011 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEASON PREVIEW

A

fter two straight NCAA Tournament berths and top-3 finishes in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team is hungry for more success in 2011. Luckily for fourth-year head coach Chris Green, three of his returning upperclassmen played major roles the past two seasons, including the team’s only seniors – outside hitters Jackie Matthisen and McKenzie Moss. Both Anchorage natives, Matthisen and Moss were the Seawolves’ kill leaders in each of the last two campaigns, while Matthisen nearly led the squad with 2.76 digs per set in 2010. As for Matthisen, the East Anchorage High product is looking to return to the form of her sophomore season, when she averaged 4.0 kills per set and earned First Team All-GNAC honors. Moss carries career averages of 2.78 kills and 2.41 digs per set into her fourth and final campaign. The Bartlett High grad was an honorable mention All-GNAC performer in 2010 as the Seawolves posted an 18-9 record (13-5 GNAC). Leading the junior class into battle will be do-everything standout Nikkie Viotto. The Eagle River High product has played in every set her first two years in Green & Gold, patrolling the back row as both libero and defensive specialist. This season, Viotto will continue to show her versatility as she joins the full rotation as an outside hitter. “We like the mixture of leadership and talent among our veterans,” said Green, who is trying to become the first Seawolf volleyball coach to lead the program to three straight NCAAs. “Jackie, McKenzie and Nikkie have all played at high levels on big stages throughout their careers, so we have confidence in that group.” Even better for the future, Green’s team features three sophomores – Robyn Burton, Quincy Haught and Siobhan Johansen – who proved their potential as freshmen, playing in 299 of 300 possible sets combined in 2010. Burton, a 5-11 middle blocker from Chugiak High, was Second Team AllGNAC after leading the league with 1.25 blocks per set. Her .297 attack percentage was also second-best ever for a Seawolf freshman. Yet another Alaskan, setter Johansen (Colony HS) led UAA and ranked ninth in the GNAC with 6.00 assists per set, splitting time in a ‘6-2’ offensive set. She returns along with Arizona native Haught, who took over primary libero responsibilities midway through the season.

ABOVE: Junior Nikkie VioƩo (9) and sophomore Quincy Haught (7) give UAA two experienced performers along the back row. Neither player has missed a set in her Seawolf career. BELOW LEFT: Senior outside hiƩer Jackie MaƩhisen could challenge for AllAmerica honors in 2011. The local product is a twoƟme All-Great Northwest AthleƟc Conference honoree and has led the Seawolves in kills the past two seasons.

Freshman defensive specialist Jordan Bush is also set to contribute in her first season after redshirting in 2010. A trio of junior college standouts will also be critical if the Seawolves are to challenge for the GNAC title. Right-side hitter Ariel Austin hails from Green’s former program, defending JC national champ Western Nebraska Community College, while middle blocker Miranda Doing (Pasadena CC) and setter Kimya Jafroudi (Orange

Coast College) come from volleyball-rich Southern California. Three true freshmen also join the roster as setter Franziska Pirkl (Munich, Germany), outside hitter Nora Anders (Werdohl, Germany) and middle blocker Alyssa Paisley (Murrieta Valley, Calif.) will look to crack the lineup. Junior right-side hitter Shelby Hollister and Kodiak native Maureen Sabado will both redshirt this season.

CHRIS GREEN Head Coach • 4th Season

I

n just three seasons at the helm of the Alaska Anchorage volleyball program, head coach Chris Green has led the Seawolves to one of the most remarkable turnarounds in collegiate volleyball, culminating with back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2009 and 2010. In the most recent campaign, Green’s Seawolves finished 18-9 — including a win over 2nd-ranked and eventual West Region champion Cal State San Bernardino — as they again made the NCAA Division II playoffs in perhaps the nation’s toughest region. UAA was nationally ranked for the second straight year and produced its third All-America award in as many seasons when senior Cortney Lundberg earned AVCA honorable mention honors. After being picked to finish seventh in the 2009 Great Northwest Athletic Conference preseason coaches’ poll, Green’s squad wound up winning the league by three full matches, boosted by a schoolrecord 13-match win streak. The Nebraska native earned both the GNAC and NCAA Div. II West Region coach-of-the-year awards as the Seawolves tied for the best winning percentage (.742) and posted the second-most victories in program history. In addition to Green’s individual honors, UAA also garnered the GNAC’s Player of the Year award from senior setter Calli Scott, plus first-team all-league accolades by sophomore outside hitter Jackie Matthisen. In 2008, Green took over a UAA club that had won just five matches the previous campaign, producing a solid 15-14 mark. The Seawolves captured the title of their own Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational and recorded their first win over a ranked team in almost a decade when they beat then-No. 8 Augustana. Under Green’s tutelage, outside hitter Rhea Cardwell became UAA’s first volleyball All-American, and Scott became the first Seawolf to earn GNAC Newcomer of the Year accolades. Coming off four straight national semifinals appearances and

the 2007 national title, Green made the jump from junior college to the NCAA Division II level in the spring of 2008. Before becoming the sixth coach UAA history, he spent the previous nine seasons (1999-07) as the head coach at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff, Neb. Green built a powerhouse program at WNCC, compiling a 453-55 record that culminated in the 2007 NJCAA Div. I national championship. The Cougars finished in the top 10 at the national tournament in all of Green’s seasons, including a current string of four straight ‘Final 4’ appearances. In the last three seasons, WNCC went 163-7 and finished national runner-up in 2006. Under Green’s tutelage, the Cougars earned a total of 10 first-team and six second-team All-America certificates and regularly placed players at NCAA Div. I and II programs. WNCC’s players also found success in the classroom, with the team maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average in all nine of his seasons. The Gering, Neb., native also coached seven years at the prep level, including a 4-year stint at Kauai High School in Lihue, Hawaii. Green earned a bachelor of science in mathematics from the University of Nebraska in 1991, and received his master’s degree from the University of Wyoming in 1995.

THE GNAC / SEAWOLF FACILITIES

S

tretching from Alaska to Oregon to Montana – and now to Canada – the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has quickly established itself as one of the most successful leagues in the NCAA Division II ranks. Founded in 2001 as a 10-team league, the GNAC returned in 2010-11 to its original membership number with the addition of Simon Fraser of Burnaby, British Columbia. Along with Montana State Billings, which joined the league in 2007, Simon Fraser joined original GNAC members Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Fairbanks, Central Washington, Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin’s, Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and Western Washington. In the last four years, the GNAC has produced one national team title (2009 SPU women’s soccer), three national runnerup finishes, three NCAA Final 4 basketball appearances (all by UAA’s men and women), and top-5 NCAA women’s cross country placings by both SPU and UAA in 2009. UAA sponsors seven of the GNAC’s 14 sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

SEAWOLF FACILITIES

T

he Seawolves host their home matches on campus in the 1,000-seat Wells Fargo Sports Complex. The gym, which has housed Seawolf volleyball, basketball and gymnastics since 1978, provides a comfortable atmosphere for both competitors and fans. Along with a refurbished playing surface in 2010, the gym recently received a facelift with the addition of new plastic bleachers to replace the former wooden seats. Seawolf volleyball players also make use of the WFSC’s other facilities — weight room, fitness center, 25-meter pool, jogging track and sauna — for training and recreation.

The home of Seawolf volleyball for three decades, the Wells Fargo Sports Complex has earned the reputa on as perhaps the loudest venue in the Great Northwest Athle c Conference, providing an in mida ng atmosphere for opponents.

SEAWOLF ADMINISTRATION & STAFF

TOM CASE

UAA ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT STAFF

Chancellor – University of Alaska Anchorage

T

om Case assumed the chancellorship of the University of Alaska Anchorage in May 2011. A retired 3-star Air Force Lt. General, Case has spent more than 12 years in Alaska, including two Air Force tours of duty, five years as dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), and three years as president and chief operating officer of a state-owned, independently operated Aerospace corporation. The 1969 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy began his 33-year military career flying in Vietnam. Later, he served at the Pentagon, was selected as the first Air Force Chief of Staff Chair on the faculty of the National War College, and eventually went on to command two fighter wings, a numbered air force and Alaskan Command. He also served as deputy commander and chief of staff for the nation’s two largest geographic joint combatant commands. After retiring from the Air Force, Case returned to higher education as dean of CBPP at UAA. During his tenure, CBPP added several new certificate and degree programs, including a graduate certificate in Global Logistics, and played an instrumental role in the formation of CBPP’s Experimental Economics Laboratory.

DR. STEVE COBB

Director of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage

In 11 seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways. Starting with the 2007-08 campaign, UAA has enjoyed four of the most memorable athletic seasons in school history, highlighted by three Final Four appearances for Seawolf basketball teams (women twice, men once), plus NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country (four times), skiing (four times), and men’s track & field (twice). In fact, with UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, ground soon will be broken on UAA’s planned $109 million Seawolf and Community Arena on campus. He has also overseen major upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of a new gym floor and bleachers at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex in 2010. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Hockey Classic and Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). ACADEMICS

The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 students through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the University’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addiction Studies, the Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a minimum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.

SEAWOLF ATHLETICS

Nicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as members of NCAA Division I in men’s ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, and women’s cross country. UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic. Since joining the NCAA ranks in 1977, UAA has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 164 Seawolves have earned All-America honors, and UAA has produced 15 individual national champions since 1991. The 2010-11 campaign will go down as one of the most overall successful years in Seawolf Athletics history as 10 of 11 UAA teams advanced in postseason competition, including the secondever WCHA Final Five appearance for hockey. Both basketball and cross country squads, plus volleyball, skiing and track & field, made NCAA appearances. Seawolves student-athletes have enjoyed unprecedented success in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 14 of the last 17 years.

MUNICIPALITY OF

ANCHORAGE W

ith city boundaries that stretch to nearly the size of the state of Delaware, more than 275,000 people are lucky to call Anchorage home. On a global scale, Anchorage is located as far north as Helsinki, Finland, and as far west as Honolulu, Hawaii. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city (more than four times larger than the second-largest town), an international air crossroads, and the business and cultural center of the state. Almost 300 flights arrive daily at Anchorage International Airport. Anchorage is a recreational paradise as well, boasting more than 14,000 acres of parkland and nearly 300 miles of paved and wilderness biking, skiing and hiking trails. In addition, the city sports dozens of

lakes, softball, baseball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, and six scenic golf courses. Chugach State Park is located 15 minutes from downtown Anchorage. With 495,000 acres, Chugach is the third-largest state park in the United States and offers a variety of year-round recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, camping, cross country skiing and wildlife viewing. Due to the warming effects of the Pacific Ocean currents and protection from the Chugach Mountains, Anchorage is located in Alaska’s so-called banana belt. Anchorage’s climate resembles that of San Francisco in the summer (highs of 75 degrees) and a Rocky Mountain ski resort in the winter (lows of 20

laska is the largest state in the union — one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second largest state, Texas. Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes,, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than three million lakes. Alaska has 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage. The 49th State celebrated is home to Mt. McKinley, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Mt. McKinley, located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, is over 200 miles north of Anchorage and can be seen from the city on clear days. Denali National Park is over six million acres and features great wildlife viewing and colorful wilderness expanses.

degrees). Low humidity also contributes to Anchorage’s comfortable climate. The residents of the city share the Anchorage bowl with more than 1,000 Moose, which are often seen on UAA’s campus throughout the year. In addition, black bears, grizzlies, foxes, wolves, lynx, wolverines, Dall sheep and bald eagles are just some of the animals that make their homes here. Salmon fishing is more than a pastime to Anchorage residents. Red and King Salmon can be caught from the many rivers and creeks that run through the city.
