W

ith five of the top six scorers returning from last year’s NCAA Tournament team, Alaska Anchorage head coach Ryan McCarthy has the luxury of a veteran squad as the Seawolves aim for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title and another playoff berth in 2014-15. Along with the core of the team, the other thing sure to stay consistent is the Seawolves’ up-tempo ‘Mayhem’ style of play. UAA led the nation with 14.3 steals per game and ranked 11th in scoring with 79.6 ppg in 2013-14, finishing 19-9 overall and tied for third in the GNAC at 12-6. Among the four starters back from that team include Preseason All-GNAC selections Alli Madison and Kiki Robertson. Madison – one of two active seniors on the roster – was UAA’s leading scorer at 12.4 points per game last year, along with averages of 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.7 steals. The Seattle product scored in double figures 19 times as junior, utilizing an aggressive midrange game that earned a team-high 129 trips to the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Robertson is a unanimous all-league preseason pick after garnering Second Team All-GNAC honors as a true freshman. The Honolulu native was the only rookie in Div. II to finish in the nation’s top 20 in both assists (5.0 apg) and steals (3.2 spg), while adding 10.3 points and 4.1 boards per contest. As the engine that drives UAA’s pressure defense, Robertson will aim to avoid the foul trouble that limited her to 23.5 minutes per game. The team’s third returning double-digit scorer is junior shooting guard Jessica Madison, who put up 10.9 ppg with teambests of 46 three-pointers made and .804 free-throw shooting. The Washingtonian also tallied 19 double-digit scoring efforts last year. Fellow junior guard Jenna Buchanan gives McCarthy another deadeye shooter, having ranked second in the GNAC with her .422 three-point percentage last year. From the tiny Yukon River community of Galena (pop. 470), Buchanan averaged 9.4 ppg and came on strong late in the campaign, tallying double figures in 9 of 18 league games. The team’s other senior – 6-foot forward KeKe Wright – will play an increased role from her first season at UAA, when she averaged 7.4 points and 5.8 rebounds in just 19.6 minutes per game off the bench, shooting a team-best .510 from the field. Sophomore forward Alysha Devine is UAA’s final non-redshirting returner, having averaged 3.9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 14.6 minutes per game as a true

LEFT: Sophomore guard Kiki Robertson dished 5.0 assists per game as a rookie and is a Preseason All-GNAC selecƟon in 2014-15. BELOW: One of seven Alaskans on the roster, junior guard Jenna Buchanan averaged 9.7 points per game and was the No. 2 threepoint shooter in the GNAC last year at 42 percent.

freshman. After earning 11 starting assignments, the former Wasilla High star will increase her leadership role in 2014-15 as team captain. Along with Wright, UAA now boasts three former JC All-Americans with the addition of newcomers Adriana Dent and Megan Mullings. A point guard originally from Southern California, Dent redshirted last season after transferring from the College of Southern Idaho, where she was MVP of the 2013 NJCAA Region 18 Tournament. Mullings makes her debut in green & gold after two seasons at South Mountain Community College in her native Arizona. The 6-footer was No. 46 overall and No. 11 among power forwards in the national JC recruiting rankings, with numbers of 20.7 ppg, 9.0 rpg and .579 field-goal shooting as a sophomore.

Three freshmen, including a pair of former Alaska prep stars, also hope to make an immediate impact. Dimond High School product Sierra Afoa should gain from her redshirt experience of a year ago as she adds another option for McCarthy at either forward position. True freshman forward Leah Bonner was an early signee with UAA last fall before earning Idaho’s Gatorade Player of the Year honors in her senior season. Another 6-foot forward, Bonner led Skyview High School to a 26-2 record and its first-ever state title, averaging 18.2 ppg, 9.7 rpg and 3.0 apg. Meanwhile, Jerica Nelson is coming off a state-title season with her Kodiak Bears, capturing USA Today Alaska Girls’ Player of the Year and Region III MVP honors as a senior. Her addition will give UAA three quality point guards, along with Robertson and Dent.

ne of the brightest coaching talents in the NCAA Div. II ranks, Anchorage native Ryan McCarthy begins his third year at the helm of the Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball program in 2014-15. In his first two seasons at UAA, McCarthy has led the Seawolves to a 36-19 overall record and an NCAA Tournament berth. In 2013-14, McCarthy’s squad finished 19-9 overall and tied for third in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with a 12-6 mark, making the NCAA playoffs for the first time under his leadership. Playing an exciting, up-tempo style, the Seawolves led the nation with 14.3 steals per game and were the highest-scoring team in the GNAC at nearly 80 points per contest. Despite a shortened roster, McCarthy’s first Seawolf squad rallied for a seven-game win streak to close the 2012-13 regular season and a third-place tie in the final GNAC standings at 11-7. In two seasons under McCarthy, the Seawolves have produced four all-conference honorees and the 2013 GNAC Freshman of the Year (Jessica Madison) among their individual awards, while teamwise UAA has posted victories over two NCAA Div. I teams, two NCAA Div. II nationally ranked teams, and perfect 4-0 marks against league rivals Seattle Pacific, Alaska Fairbanks and Western Oregon. Prior to UAA, McCarthy spent five seasons at GNAC rival Northwest Nazarene from 2007-12. At NNU, he served as an assistant, interim head coach and associate head coach, helping the Crusaders to two NCAA Tournament berths and a .633 winning percentage during that stretch. After helping NNU to a 56-27 record as assistant coach from 2007-10, McCarthy stepped up as acting head coach in 2010-11 and led the Crusaders to a 14-13 record and a bid to the inaugural GNAC Tournament. In 2011-12, McCarthy was named associate head coach and helped pilot NNU to an 18-10 season.

NCAA ViolaƟons Summary During the transi on between women’s basketball coaches in the summer of 2012, the University of Alaska Anchorage discovered two student athletes had been promised full scholarships when, in fact, they only received par al scholarships. Further research into this discrepancy revealed that unknown third par es accessed the student athletes’ account informa on and used that informa on to make anonymous cash payments to their accounts. As a result, students believing that they had no indebtedness to the university because of scholarships, did not no ce when they had no indebtedness due to these payments that violated NCAA regula ons. The current women’s basketball staff had no involvement in this ac vity. UAA self-reported this viola on upon

discovery and ac vely par cipated in the NCAA’s inves ga on into it. Ul mately, former women’s basketball coach Tim Moser admi ed to masterminding and execu ng the plan with the help of volunteer assistant coach Elisha Harris. The Penal es that UAA will serve are the following: I. Public Reprimand & Censure; II. Proba on from May 2014 – May 2016; III. $5,000 fine; IV. Vaca on of the 2011-12 regular season and conference tournaments in which ineligible studentathletes competed; V. Loss of 74% of a full scholarship for one academic year (this is being appealed); VI. Self-imposed external compliance audit in 2015.

KEITH HACKETT

ntering his second year as Director of Athletics at the University of Alaska Anchorage, Keith Hackett has positioned the Seawolves’ 13-sport NCAA program for unprecedented growth and success as a new era begins in 2014-15. Since arriving on Oct. 1, 2013, Hackett has overseen the planning and logistics for the department’s transition into the $109 million Alaska Airlines Center – a state-of-the-art sports, community and concert venue that will transform the UAA campus – along with expanded hockey facilities at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Under his leadership, the department has developed an official strategic plan that will guide the decision-making process and allow the department to maintain a focus on the mission of Seawolf Athletics. A university and administrative management executive with 37 years of higher education experience, Hackett values connecting with the Anchorage community, and building positive relationships with campus faculty, students, staff and U-Med District partners. In addition to reorganizing the internal management structure of the department, he has also entered into agreements with several national leaders in collegiate brand advancement, developing partnerships with Global Spectrum to manage the Alaska Airlines Center, Front Row Marketing to oversee corporate partnerships, and Paciolan for ticketing. Along with his behind-the-scenes contributions, UAA’s success in the competitive arena was also apparent in Hackett’s first year. In 201314, the Seawolves not only finished 16th of 315 institutions nationally in the NCAA Div. II Learfield Director’s Cup, but also produced 25 All-Americans, nine NCAA Championships team qualifications and four Great Northwest Athletic Conference team titles, while UAA studentathletes combined for a 3.18 overall grade-point average. Hackett came to UAA after working from 2004-13 as the senior associate AD for internal affairs at the University of Nevada, where he oversaw the football, track & field/cross country and baseball programs. In addition to his day-to-day responsibilities with specific teams, Hackett was involved with donor relations and major gifts, budget, human and physical resource management, and alumni and community relations at Nevada. As a key member of the Wolf Pack’s senior leadership team, he was responsible for oversight of all athletics department capital projects, development of the department’s first athletic facilities master plan, and event management for all home contests. Prior to his time in Reno, Hackett served as Executive Vice President for Special Projects and was Director of the St. Gregory’s University College for Working Adults in Tulsa, Okla. He also served as Executive Vice President and Provost at St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee, Okla., from 1997-2004, and as VP for Admissions and Enrollment Management/Dean of Admissions for Law, Graduate and Undergraduate Admissions at Oklahoma City University from 1992-97. He worked at OCU as Dean of Students from 1986-89. From 1989-92, Hackett was the Associate AD at Northern Illinois University, where he oversaw eight Division I sports, including football and men’s and women’s basketball. The native of Nanuet, N.Y., began his college coaching and teaching career at Baker University in Baldwin, Kan., where he was head baseball coach from 1978-83 and assistant football coach from 1977-83. From there, he went on to coach offensive line for the football program at Div. I Memphis from 1983-85. Hackett earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Tarkio (Mo.) College in 1976 and an M.S. in education from the University of Kansas in 1979. He and his wife Patricia have been married for 38 years and have two adult children, Katie and James.

Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than three million lakes. Alaska also boasts 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage, and an estimated 100,000 glaciers. The 49th State is home to Denali, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Also known as Mt. McKinley, the collosal mountain is located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, located 200 miles north of Anchorage, and can be seen from the city on clear days.
